Going with the flow City officials, project workers break ground on Spring Valley’s new wastewater treatment plant By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

SPRING VALLEY — With gold-plated shovels in hand, individuals involved in the project broke ground Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the site of the new wastewater treatment plant in Spring Valley. The plant was designed by Chamlin & Associates Inc., Peru, and Don Bixby, engineer at Chamlin & Associates Inc., said the project schematics were awesome to cre-

ate. “I never dreamed we’d design another wastewater treatment plant from the ground up,” Bixby said, explaining work is always needed on existing facilities, but it’s a rarity to lay the first brick. “It’s been a lot of fun working on this project.” Bixby said the opportunity for proper evaluation has been available with the project, and he’s shown the Spring Valley area to personnel involved with the new plant, so they have a deeper understanding of the com-

munity standards and geographical expectations surrounding the plant. Focused on efficiency and structural integrity, Bixby has studied similar projects around the country as a reference for the upcoming task. “I’m confident we’ll do a good job, as it’s always an accomplishment to see the water come out crystal clear,” Bixby said. River City Construction LLC of East Peoria were contracted for the $11,250,000 project, and project manager Bradley Klisares said the new plant is what they specialize in. “It’s right up our alley,” Klisares said, adding demoli-

Each student will have a Chromebook By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley Board has moved forward with its technology plan to supply all high school students and teachers with Google Chromebooks this year. During a special meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14, the board agreed to purchase Chromebooks for all high school students. At the last regular board meeting, the board had approved the purchase of 35 Chromebooks for all high school teachers. The district will be getting 330 students Chromebooks. The total cost for the computers total around $68,000, and the cost to bring the high school building technology system up to par on the ability to support all the computers will be about $29,000. While it looks to be an expensive purchase, board member Don DeWaele said this will not be a huge expense for the district, as many community businesses and organizations have stepped up to offer donations toward the technology upgrade. DeWaele confirmed the district had collected about $40,000 in donations for the Chromebooks, and said there could be more community donations coming soon. Board President Dr. Rick Cernovich brought up policy about the Chromebooks, which high school Principal Eric Lawson confirmed he had been given a copy of Sherrard High School’s technology policy guide, and they are using it as a guideline to work on Bureau Valley’s future
