55 applications in first few days By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) now being offered through the Tri-County Opportunities Council is taking a burden off of folks needing assis-
tance with their utility bills. Vanessa Hoffeditz, community service coordinator for Tri-County Opportunities Council, confirmed since the federally funded program became available last Friday, there has been a tremendous response from individuals. So far, the Princeton office has
received 55 applications for the program. Hoffeditz explained the state funding for the utility assistance program was taken away July 1, due to the state budget impasse. Fortunately, a bill was passed within the last month to allow federal funds for programs to fil-
ter through the state despite the budget impasse. “I don’t know what these people would have done without the program at all,” Hoffeditz said. Many of the individuals who benefited from the state-funded program had to cut back in other areas, such as food and medi-
cations, in order to pay for their utility bills. Hoffeditz confirmed some folks were even forced to be disconnected from services and have remained without utility services since July. These folks are now

Benefit planned for 4-year-old boy Robert Longmire has cerebral palsy and West syndrome By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
BUDA — A benefit will to help out the family of a 4-year-old Buda boy who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and the rare seizure disorder, West syndrome, will be Saturday, Oct. 10. Robert Longmire was diagnosed with the seizure disorder at 6 months old. His mother, Jen, said she first noticed something wasn’t right when Robert would be laying in his crib and suddenly jolt awake as
if he had been startled. She said it was difficult to understand what was happening at first because it wasn’t a normal sign of a seizure. When Jen took her son to Peoria to see a specialist, they told her the type of seizures Robert was experiencing were rare. She said doctors confirmed they had only seen three cases of West syndrome prior to Robert’s. While doctors said patients usually outgrow the seizures around age 3, Robert continues to experience the symptoms. Doctor’s recently recommended Robert undergo extensive dental work to help ease the pain of his seizures.

Farm-to-Table dinner highlights local growers By Dave Cook dcook@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — No one traveled very far for the Farm-to-Table dinner, including the ingredients. The entire meal was sourced from local growers in celebration of their contributions to area farmers’ markets, healthy eating and the success of the first year of the From the Ground Up farmers’ market loyalty program sponsored by the Bureau and Putnam County Health Department. Continuing the theme of locality, the four-course gourmet meal, which was served Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Bureau County Metro Center, was masterfully crafted by Chef Monika Sudakov from Sheffield’s Chestnut Street Inn. Chef Monika, already well
known for her fondness of cooking with locally sourced ingredients, volunteered her time to help showcase the bounty of area growers. “What a great night. We celebrated the season in royal style, with delicious, local, farm fresh food prepared by Chef Monika in the company of the growers themselves. Every course was a treat for taste and health,” said the health department’s Joy Kauffman. Those who completed their loyalty program punch cards were entered into a drawing with the prize of tickets to the dinner. Those lucky enough to have their names drawn dined alongside the growers from area markets and other ticket holders. In the
