Cause of death determined in Dewey case Results of autopsy not being released at this time By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
HENNEPIN — Illinois State Police investigator Lt. Jeff Padilla confirmed Thursday an autopsy was conducted on Deborah Dewey, and the cause of the death has been determined. Details of that autopsy are still
being withheld from the public due to the ongoing investigation. Padilla said the cause of death has not even been released to Dewey’s family. “They have an understanding of why we are not able to do so at this time,” he said. Padilla said ISP continues to go over evidence related to Dew-
ey’s homicide death investigation. Key players in the investigation held a meeting Sept. 28 to discuss the case in detail and figure out what still needs to be completed to ensure no stones are left unturned in this case, he said. Those present at the meeting included Putnam County State’s
Attorney Christina Mennie, state police investigators and crime scene personnel, a representative from LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office and Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle. “We’re still working. This is still a very much active investigation for us,” Padilla said, adding there are now eight full-time

PRINCETON — Princeton High School’s head custodian has resigned, which appears to have solved one of the biggest issues the Princeton Booster Club had with the district’s administration. Sam Pickard’s resignation was approved at Wednesday’s PHS Board meeting, before a 90-minute closed session between the board and members of the Princeton Tigers Athletic Booster Club. Afterward, Kelley Fisher, the club’s vice president and public relations officer, said one of the club’s biggest problems was solved immediately when the head custodian turned in his resignation, and that, after tense discussions about communication and other issues, both sides agreed to move forward and work together. The club will not disband, Fisher added. Neither side would discuss the specifics of the problem with Pickard.

Dremann will not seek a second term in the circuit clerk office Dawn Reglin running unopposed for position By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Bureau County Circuit Clerk Mary Romanelli-Dremann has announced she will not seek re-election after running one term. Dremann won the seat of circuit clerk in the November 2012 general election, when she beat out her opponent Dawn Reglin, a deputy clerk in the circuit clerk’s
office, by a small margin. “My decision to not seek re-election was an easy one. My husband recently turned 70, and I will be 62 in October. I enjoy the idea that I am deciding, not the voters, when I am ready to leave office. I tell everyone that I believe in term limits, (even) my own,” Dremann said. Dremann is leaving office with two regrets. First, that she didn’t run for the position earlier in life, and sec-

ond, that her efforts to raise the salaries of the clerks at Bureau County Courthouse have been ignored by the Dawn Reglin county board. Dremann stands with firm belief the clerks are “seriously underpaid.” At the July county board meeting, she addressed the board with the issue, however since then, the topic has not been discussed publicly by board members. “I hope the board will take
a good look at salaries in other counties and the responsibilities and duties of our clerks when negotiations begin at Mary Dremann the conclusion of the current union contract on Nov. 30,” she said. Under Dremann’s rule, the office of circuit clerk has seen many upgrades — from computers and desks to case management software and online court records. “We’ve improved our
third-party collection of unpaid fines, fees and court costs. Our probate records from 1837 to 1930 have been digitally photographed by Family Search at no cost to the county, and we now have external hard drives containing those images,” Dremann said. As Dremann prepares to leave office, her former opponent, Reglin, is ready to move up and head the post. With no opponents, Reglin said she is looking forward to becoming the next Bureau County Circuit Clerk.
“I can make the transition of the office as smooth as possible, since I have been a deputy clerk in this office since 2005, and I am very familiar with day-to-day operations and requirements of this office,” she said. Reglin said there will be even more changes coming to the office, however, the mandated e-filings system, which was mandated by the Supreme Court, will be one of the most significant transitions.
