Helping and housing the homeless ... Illinois Valley PADS to open Sept. 1 By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

PERU — Illinois Valley PADS (Public Action to Deliver) is preparing to open its doors at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1. Those who are experiencing homelessness in LaSalle, Bureau or Putnam counties will now have a

place to seek shelter. The locations in Peru and Ottawa serve men, women and families. The Ottawa shelter has 50 beds with three designated rooms for families. The Peru shelter has 24 beds. Looking back on last year, there were 237 individuals served, which included 14 families and 18 children using the shelters from Sept. 1, 2014, to May 31. The shelter also provided 15,951 meals, while beds were used 6,987 times. This year, Carol Alcorn, Illinois Valley PADS executive director, anticipates seeing an increase in home-

lessness due to loss of preventative services. Alcorn said she is already getting calls from individuals, who are losing their housing and have no place to go as local agency resources that help with rent and utility assistance are closing, due to lack of funding. “The state of Illinois is working through a period of adjustment that is closing or reducing some of the local resources,” Alcorn said. “There are going to be more people who lose their housing because of those issues.”

SV boil order lifted By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

SPRING VALLEY — The boil order affecting the city of Spring Valley has been lifted, and the water is fit to drink and cook with, said Mayor Walt Marini. Marini said the boil order, in affect since Tuesday, Aug. 18, was lifted the morning of Saturday, Aug. 22 after consecutive samples taken from Well No. 11 were deemed suitable by the EPA for consumption and culinary use. The EPA tested the water quality in Well No. 11 toward the end of last week after Well No. 10 had malfunctioned. They normally require two consecutive samples taken prior to the reverse osmosis chamber of the well to come back clean, and the two samples must be spaced at least 24 hours apart. In this instance, the EPA allowed water samples to be used after reverse osmosis occurred, and they only spaced the samples 18 hours apart. Marini indicated six areas around Spring Valley were tested along with Well No. 11 to assure the water quality was consistent. Well No. 10 was being utilized by the city, while Well No. 11 was being rehabbed; but the boil order was placed for the safety of residents after pieces of brass were found in the pre-filter samples of Well No. 10. Marini said well maintenance and repair is tedious work that cannot be rushed due to the intricate nature of a properly functioning well. As they had when the boil order was placed, city officials went door to door Saturday with flyers indicating the boil order had been removed, Marini said. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews. com.

Ride on, my child ...

Motorcyclists raise money for research at St. Jude Children’s Hospital By E ric E ngel eengel@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — The bikers say it’s unlike any other ride they’ve taken. It’s a parade, a celebration of life where the streets are filled with tears of joy and overwhelming adulation for city blocks as the motorcyclists roll down the center alley. Stretching down the sidelines are doctors, nurses

and citizens, clapping for the champions of philanthropy. Even the children themselves, starry-eyed and full of life, wave from their windows with smiles meant to melt the heart. The riders say when they roll toward the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the building itself seems to sway a welcoming wave of applause. In 2007, Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy, along with Brad Wiebler and his wife, Angie, wanted to

expand upon the charity and humanitarian efforts of the St. Jude Run. They fueled their passion for helping children with their love for riding motorcycles, and “St. Jude Rides — Peoria to Memphis” was born. “It’s hard to put into words what this ride means,” Steve Wiebler said, serving along with Lora Schaer as Princeton’s ride coordinators. “The welcoming committee of doctors, patients and families is unbelievable. Even kids in their rooms come to the window
