Expanding history in Manlius Second floor of First State Bank Building now holds more items from the past By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

MANLIUS — The Manlius Historical Society recently expanded its memorabilia exhibition to the upper level of the former First State Bank of Manlius building. Since 2012, it’s been a mission to update the upper level of the building to provide more room to display Manlius history. Pat Andersen-Glafka, a trustee of the historical society, explained it was quite the task, but it was well worth the time. In order to restore the upstairs, volunteers ripped up old rubber back carpet, sanded hardwood floors, applied four coats of stain to the floors, painted walls, put in a new rod ceiling and the list goes on ... The upstairs of the building was originally used as apartments. Trustees continue to arrange

memorabilia in the upper level of the building but have also decided to display enlarged photos of the village and the people of Manlius from the early 1900s. The selected photos are hung on the walls throughout the upper level and showcase what life was like in Manlius at the turn of the century. Glafka said her son, Mark Glafka of Chicago, was the mastermind behind the photo display. Many of the photos were taken from the village’s centennial history book. Glafka explained it gives viewers a different perspective seeing them blown up and hung on the wall versus just in a small book. To help fund the cost of the project, the historical society offers residents an opportunity to pay $75 for a particular photo they may enjoy most, and then a plaque with their name will be placed on the photo.

Meals on wheels rolls into Sheffield Mobile food pantry helps out 71 patrons By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

SHEFFIELD — The River Bend Foodbank rolled into Sheffield Saturday, Aug. 15, and hosted a mini mobile food pantry to those served by the Western Bureau County Food Pantry. About 50 volunteers from the western Bureau County area and of the First Lutheran Church of Princeton came together to lend a hand in unloading the food, setting up the aisles and assisting patrons receiving food. Because of all the helping hands available, the tasks involved in setting up were completed as quickly and smoothly as possible. The mini mobile food pantry was open from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in West Park and served 71 individuals. Mary Lanham, co-director of the Western Bureau County

Food Pantry, was on site helping patrons sign-up to receive food. She was beyond thrilled to see all the volunteers and said she was thankful for the River Bend Foodbank’s willingness to serve a rural community like Sheffield. “I think it’s an absolutely great program,” she said. “It serves two purposes. It allows people to get an extra bunch of food for the summer, and it gives the foodbank a presence in the community.” She explained the mobile food pantry was in Princeton earlier this year, and it was mentioned the River Bend Foodbank should host a mobile food pantry on the western side of the county. Lanham said that’s when she received a call from the foodbank asking if she might be interested in having the mobile food bank in town. Lanham said her response was “of course,” but she did worry about being able to get the needed 30 volunteers to help out.
