BV moves forward with new junior high Board hires architectural firm, decides to send out surveys By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com
MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley School Board moved forward with its plan to build a new junior high school that will attach to the existing high school building on the Manlius campus. Stephen Nelson and Christopher Anderson, representatives of the Larson
& Darby Group of Rockford, attended a special meeting of the Bureau Valley School Board Tuesday, July 14. The pair gave a PowerPoint presentation to the board, showing four different floor plans/ scenarios — all of varying square footage and prices. After the presentation, the board eventually agreed in a 6-1 vote to hire the Rockford firm for architectural services for a price that will range from $350,000 to $470,000. Board member
Kent Siltman cast the lone no vote. Of the four different options presented to the board, three were basically similar — differing only in the square footage (approximately 25,000 to 35,000 square feet), the cost to build the structure ($5 million to $7 million) and the number of classrooms (six to 12). All three of these options for the new junior high school included a commons area, a gymnasium, locker rooms, restrooms and a food service area. With these options, the junior high students would share the main entrance with the high school students, however, any other co-mingling of the students would be at a minimum.

The fourth option presented (35,000 square feet) included a separate entrance for the junior high students, nine classrooms and the other features presented in the first three options. The board spent considerable time reviewing the schematic designs Some of the concerns that surfaced about the options included: • An adequate septic system; • Ample parking lots; • A separate library for the junior high students; • The size of the new gymnasium and

PRINCETON — Bureau County has a new administrator. On Tuesday, July 14, the Bureau County Board approved to hire Sue McLaughlin of Normal. The board wasn’t all in favor of the hire, however. After a closed session, the board conducted a voice vote to approve an employment agreement for McLaughlin. While the majority of board members voted yes, there were several who voted no for the agreement. The vote to hire McLaughlin was split 17-9, with board members Joe Bassetti, Tom Dobrich, Deb Feeney, Mary Jane Marini, Mike Maynard, Jane Piccatto, Micah Robinson, James Thompson and John Baracani voting no. The board anticipates McLaughlin to start sometime in August. Partnering with Marshall County Public Health Also on Tuesday, July 14, board member Loretta Volker, chairman of the health department committee, announced ongoing negotiations have been taking place over the last six months between Bureau and Marshall counties regarding public health services. Volker said Marshall County’s public health has been covered by Peoria County for a number of years, however, Peoria County recently decided to withdraw its services. “We have been negotiating with them on whether or not Bureau-Putnam County can pick up their services and extend services,” she said. “And we have found a way to do that.” Volker said a contract has been written up, and it’s anticipated Marshall County will accept the agreement. The contract will allow all Marshall County employees to remain working in their positions, however, they will move to a 35-hour work week which is the same

No regrets for this egret Bureau County Republican correspondent photographer Trudy Heinz was in the right place at the right time, when she discovered this lone egret at Lake Wildwood in Varna. The bird was enjoying some time in the overflow near the dam that runs into the creek. An egret is a heron with mainly white plumage, having long plumes in the breeding season.
SHEFFIELD — If you’re looking for a family event that provides fun for everyone, you might want to venture to Sheffield for the fifth annual Music on Main event, set for Saturday, July 18. Sponsored by Sheffield Pride, the featured attraction of the annual event is the music, which is set to begin at 6 p.m., where the Lizzi Neal Band takes the stage until 8 p.m. Lizzi Neal Band specializes in rhythm and blues music, and bluesy rock and roll. Following that band, event-goers can enjoy Forgotten Highways, a country band which has opened for many big names in country music. Forgotten Highways plays until midnight. A beer tent, wine and cocktails will be available, and plenty of local food vendors will be offering a wide array of snacks and eats. The gates for the music, which is held on Sheffield’s Main Street, open at 5 p.m. The gate charge is $6, and children 12 and under are free. “It’s going to be a fun-filled evening with kids’ events ... two great bands, and good food and drinks,” said Justin Yepsen, who is spearheading the event this year. While the music is obviously the crux of the Music on Main event, there will be plenty of other activities to get the entire family involved. At 2 p.m. (registration begins at 1:30 p.m.), Sheffield’s Cornerstone Community Wellness Center will sponsor a Wet and Wacky Race for children — adults are encouraged to get involved too. The event begins on Main Street; participants then head to Veterans School Park where they’ll find an obstacle course of water features and pools of Jell-O. At 3 p.m., children can participate in
