Kewanee prison will remain open Facility to be converted to adult prisoner use By Lyle Ganther lganther@bcrnews.com

KEWANEE — Legislators and local leaders applauded a decision on Friday, May 20, to convert the Illinois Youth Center at Kewanee to adult prisoner use. State Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson), State Sen. Chuck Weaver (R-Peoria), State Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Rock Island), and State Rep. Mike Smiddy (D-Port Byron) were joined by employees, county officials, city and

economic leaders at a press conference. “Sen. Weaver and I are pleased to announce we have a letter of commitment from Gov. (Bruce) Rauner that IDOC will re-utilize IYC-Kewanee as a correctional facility. This announcement only became a reality with the combined legislative and Kewanee area community effort. This is good for the community, good for jobs, and good for the taxpayers,” said Moffitt. “I want to thank

Gov. Rauner for making this commitment.” “We look forward to helping ensure the Illinois Department of Corrections realize its goals to help rehabilitate our state’s inmate population and provide the justice that our courts seek. I know the addition of the Kewanee Youth Center into IDOC’s inventory will be an asset,” Weaver said. “I want to thank the governor’s office and the Department of Corrections for a continuing commitment

to Kewanee, Henry County and criminal justice reform.” Anderson added, “I am pleased with the announcement and commitment that the governor has given. Although Kewanee is not in my district, a large number of the employees reside in the 36th Senate District. The facility will aide the department’s mission serving justice for Illinois’ citizens.” Smiddy also added, “This has been a strong bipartisan effort to ensure this facility continued

to stay open and offer economic viability to Henry County.” The Illinois Youth Center-Kewanee is the newest facility for Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice and was one of the most modern for IDOC, with it opening in 2001. The Illinois Department of Corrections currently has more than 45,000 inmates in custody, while only maintaining actual bed space for about 31,000.

Local chef to appear on new Food Network show Wise Guys’ Chef Jeff is in a ‘Dinner Rush’ By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — It’s safe to say cooking is in his blood, and in a few weeks, TV viewers across the country will be able to see for themselves. Chef Jeff Patton, 56, the executive chef and kitchen manager at Wise Guys in Princeton, was chosen to appear on a new program on the Food Network called Dinner Rush. “I belong to The American Culinary Federation (ACF) and when they contacted me last November and asked if I would be interested in participating in a cooking competition show, I jumped at the chance,” said Patton. “It was sponsored by the Augusta, Ga., chapter of ACF. We

taped the show over an eight-day period in February just outside Atlanta. It’s a farm-to-table show called Dinner Rush that is set to air June 5.” Because of confidentiality clauses he had to sign in order to appear on the show, Patton is unable to speak about the show in-depth regarding how he did in the competition, who won and other particulars. He was able to say the same company that produces the popular Food Network show, “Chopped,” also produced “Dinner Rush.” “It was an honor to have been chosen, and it was a blast,” Patton said. “I met a lot of talented chefs and made a few new friends along the way.”

LAMOILLE — LaMoille is looking to step out into furthering its math program. At the LaMoille Community Unit School District meeting on Thursday, May 19, the board looked at a new math program it could use. The program is called Digits. Representatives from LaMoille traveled to Minooka to see the program used in its natural habitat. “We have partnerships with many school districts throughout Illinois,” Superintendent Ricardo Espinoza explained. “Through that process, we are able to share information, get information, receive instruction, at no extra cost.” Those who watched the program in use were impressed. “It’s very interactive. It’s very engaging,” said Tara Robinson, a Title 1 math specialist at LaMoille. “When we were in Minooka, the students were engaged the
