A budget balancing act Celebrating the arts at PES

By Zita Henneberry zhenneberry@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — The Princeton Elementary School District has been

left at a loss in both finances and staff. Princeton Elementary Superintendent Tim Smith presented an amended budget to the school board. He said the amended budget will sit for 30 days for review before its final approval. Smith said the main differences in this budget and the original was the

removal of the $2 million in bonds the board was not forced to pursue and the cut in money which will be received from the county. He explained every year the district will receive a certificate of extension from the county courthouse indicating the amount of money the district will receive from the

taxpayers. This amount is usually extraordinarily accurate, he said. However, he added, the last two years it has not been. Adjustments made to local entities and their property taxes have led to a loss of revenue for the district. In all the funds, the budget adjustment has impacted the district by more than $100,000, said

Smith. The good news is the district may be able to make up some money in the unrestricted funds, but it wouldn’t be much. Smith said money lost in the budget’s unrestricted funds totaled $32,708. Smith explained the loss of money from the county at this point has left the school with a loss of gener-

al state aid as well. Where under usual circumstances money lost from the county would be made up by general state aid, in this circumstance, it will not be. Since the state is working off an inflated number, the general state aid is lower than it should be, he added.

Year 169 No. 62

Enjoy a relaxing day of art, food, fun and more By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Local artists and art enthusiasts will come together for a fun, relaxing day at Art in the Park to be held on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Soldiers and Sailors Park. This will be the second year for the new event,

which is spearheaded by Gina Nelson of Princeton. She explained this event used to be led by local artist Bart Kassabaum a while back, until it ceased. Nelson decided to pick it up again to give local artists an opportunity to display and sell their handmade items. “There hasn’t been any event like this on the south end of Princeton,

and the park is a beautiful place. I loved it when I used to take my stuff to it when Bart was doing the event. It was always a very relaxing and cool event,” she said. Nelson said last year’s event was very well attended, and she hopes the community will once again come out and show support for their local artists. “It is always nice to have activity in your town — even if it’s small activity,” she said. There will be a variety of

art mediums to view and purchase. Anything from pottery, jewelry, painting,
