Giving less than 100 percent Senate Bill 100 viewed as an easy out to isolated behavioral issues By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — Legislation is being considered that would alter how school districts in the area are allowed to handle student suspensions and expulsions, and area administrators are considering maneuvers to their approach concerning Senate Bill 100. The bill mandates school staff to further validate their reasoning when it comes to suspending or expelling a student, with

greater documentation and explanation as to why the action is deemed necessary. Princeton Elementary School Superintendent Tim Smith feels the bill to be another situation where the legislation only speaks to a small percentage of school districts around the state, yet is being blanketed across all of Illinois. “In my opinion, it’s a policy that’s not well thought out,” Smith said, noting tactics which apply to inner-city circumstances are being pushed on small town districts as if all

demographics and standards of behavior are the same across the entire state. “Now they have these restrictions on suspensions and expulsions, which just puts more burden on the school districts to prove the legitimacy of the action.” Smith said without a doubt suspensions are at times necessary and constructive, not only for the student in question but for the entire academic population, because it sends the message disruptive behavior is not going to be tolerated. Yet if a certified

letter sent home to the parents — as the bill would likely require — is not returned to the school in a timely manner, necessary discipline might not be capitalized upon as it should be. “It could be three or four days (before a parent returns the certified letter), which is contrary to what most psychologists have said for years — the consequence needs to be immediate,” Smith said.

Motocross riders practice their maneuvers on the Sunset Ridge MX track in Walnut. Sunset Ridge co-owner Jan Pistole said all riders are respectfully placed with others of similar experience and skill set, and all riders are mandated to wear the proper safety gear.

A day of prayer

Approximately 30 people gathered with local clerics in Princeton’s Soldiers and Sailors Park on Thursday to take part in the National Day of Prayer. President Harry S. Truman was the first of the modern era to formalize the day when he signed a proclamation in 1952. It is now held annually on the first Thursday in May.

WALNUT — Anyone who can balance a moving motorcycle and crank a throttle can leave the dirt track to see what the earth looks like from many meters above the ground, but Jan Pistole wants everyone to find their footing back on solid ground — feeling nothing but safety and satisfaction. With May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness month, Pistole — co-owner of Sunset Ridge MX track in Walnut — expanded on beginning its 17th season at Sunset Ridge and the importance of everyone keeping their bodies intact while having a blast on the motocross track. “Our motto has been, ‘A safe, fun family atmosphere’ from Day 1, and we work feverishly every year to maintain that motto,” Pistole said, adding her profession as a critical care nurse makes her somewhat of a safety

geek. “We make sure everyone is doing what they’re supposed to be doing and following the rules.” The Sunset Ridge staff purchased their own ambulance from the state of Illinois in 2005, and they have their own emergency medical technicians (EMT) on site. “We utilize several local EMTs and paramedics, and they told me they get their best trauma experience at Sunset Ridge,” Pistole said, noting out of 6,000 participants in 2015, only 24 riders experienced injuries. “That’s less than a 1 percent injury rate, and we hold to that standard every single year.” Pistole said children start riding at 3 or 4 years old, and Sunset Ridge has a particular area for beginner riders. When they show improvement in skill and understanding of their vehicle, the riders move up the ladder to the main motocross track.

A trifecta of expertise

SV Outdoors Expo offers participants a chance to showcase their outdoor skills By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

SPRING VALLEY — Some can float an arrow through the atmosphere with pinpoint accuracy, reaching their mark regardless of distance, while others bob a few times and pull a trophy out of the waterways. Rare few can settle breathless and take

aim, sending a bullet through the bottle from 1,000 yards away … but an individual who can do all three with composure would be highly respected indeed. During the upcoming Spring Valley Outdoors Expo this summer, the first annual triathlon competition will be introduced to outdoor enthusiasts young and old alike on Saturday, June 25, in downtown Spring Valley.

“Our Spring Valley Outdoors Expo planning committee had been bouncing off various ideas on how to improve the attendance at the event and make it more pleasurable for the attendees,” said Debb Ladgenski, Spring Valley’s economic development coordinator. “Since the focus of the expo is to promote a healthy lifestyle through involvement with outdoor related activities, as well as support the many businesses in

Spring Valley that encompass this lifestyle, we chose an activity that included outdoor sports connected to this.” Men and women — age 17 and older — are invited to compete in the triathlon, with a separate youth competition — age 10 to 16 — available as well. The triathlon will involve shooting, casting and archery competitions.
