Road work ahead! About $450,000 in state dollars coming for road repairs By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

The county of Bureau, its townships and municipalities will get a total of about $450,000 as its

portion of a $100 million Illinois Jobs Now! construction program for needed infrastructure/ road repairs. Gov. Pat Quinn made the announcement on

Monday, saying the $100 million from the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program will go to repair municipal and township infrastructure throughout the state. The funding will help communities combat potholes and make other critical infrastructure repairs follow-

ing the historic winter weather Illinois faced, Quinn said. “The extreme and historic winter has left many roads in rough shape,” Quinn said. “This investment will help local communities repair the damage done by Mother Nature and improve the

quality of life for residents and businesses.” The county of Bureau is slated to receive $98,735. Townships are set to receive a total of $245,399. Municipalities in Bureau County will get a total of $113,497. The repair projects will be selected and managed

locally with the Illinois Department of Transportation providing oversight, Quinn said. This new funding is the last of a series of annual transportation investments distributed through the Illinois Jobs Now! program since 2010.

Council: How many do we buy? Princeton looks at replacing several police vehicles By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — The Princeton City Council is debating the practicality of buying eight new vehicles, including two pick-ups, for the Princeton Police Department. At Monday’s meeting, the council had a first reading of the proposed 2014-15 fiscal year budget, which shows a purchase of four cars, two SUVs and two Dodge four-wheel drive pick-up trucks for the police department from Prescott Brothers in Princeton. The new vehicles would replace seven cars and one SUV, which would be used as trade-ins. Originally, the proposed budget had called for a purchase of nine vehicles, but the number has been scaled back to eight. The vehicles to be replaced include a 2000 model, two 2005 models, a 2007, a 2009, with the rest being 2011 models. Commissioner Joel Quiram said he’s concerned about the appearance of the city buying eight vehicles in one year, rather than just replacing three or four a year. Spending that much money in one year when there are other needs, like streets, is a concern. He also questioned the need for pick-up trucks.

Winnie Murphey: A ‘gracious matriarch’ Longtime Princeton business owner dies By Terri Simon tsimon@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — As owner of Hoffman’s Patterns of the Past, Winnie Murphey was surrounded by pretty things. And perhaps all those lovely pieces of china and other charming items in her store were a reflection of her — as those who knew Murphey

describe her as someone with a beautiful heart. Longtime Princeton business owner Winnie Murphey died April 4. She was 90 years old. Marjorie Johnson of Princeton knew Murphey for many years. Not only were they neighbors and friends, but Johnson said their children went to school together too.

“Winnie and Allen together made that beautiful store, and they were known all over the world. Winnie was a very sharp businesswoman, and she kept that store in A-1 condition,” Johnson said. “I don’t know how many years she was in business on Main Street, but one of my favorite memories was going in there at Christmas time. It was always
