‘This is the IRS calling!’ Don’t fall prey to this latest scam By Donna Barker dbarker@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — With tax season in full swing, Bureau County residents are urged to not fall prey to the latest
phone scam dealing with alleged communication from the Internal Revenue Service. According to J. Russell George, the treasury inspector general for U.S. Tax
Administration, more than 20,000 taxpayers have been targeted in recent weeks by this “IRS phone scam” with a total or more than $1 million lost by thousands of victims. In describing this latest scam, George said fake
IRS agents call taxpayers saying the taxpayer owes taxes and needs to make immediate payment using a prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. Those who refuse are threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license,
George said. Complaints about this scam started last August but have escalated during filing season, with people targeted in nearly every state, George said. “This is the largest scam of its kind that we have
ever seen,” George said. “The increasing number of people receiving these unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS is alarming.”

Two administrators at BV? Thompson tells why By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com
MANLIUS — Area residents within the Bureau Valley School District have questioned the board’s decision to hire an assistant superintendent for next school year. In February, Gavin Sronce was hired to the fill the new position, effective July 1. Interim Superintendent Dennis Thompson reported in a recent meeting he had with the Community Strategic Planning Committee and gave a rationale explanation behind the board’s decision to hire Sronce. “The board of education was impressed with both (Stephen) Endress and (Gavin) Sronce during the interview process and therefore sees the additional cost for an assistant superintendent as an investment in Bureau Valley,” he explained. “Both of these gentlemen have (the) capacity and knowledge to do this work.” Endress was hired as the district’s superintendent beginning next year. On Monday, Thompson confirmed it was never a plan to hire an assistant superintendent when the board began their search this winter. He said the board is used to having two interim superintendents, he and Jim Whitmore, and he hoped it was on their minds that having two people filling the position provided better service and coverage of different areas.

Enrollment deadline drawing near Do you have health coverage? By Goldie Currie gcurrie@bcrnews.com
March 31 marks the last day for individuals to enroll in health insurance. Counselors at the Bureau and Putnam County Health Department are busy in their last push to reach individuals needing assistance before the Affordable Healthcare Act enrollment deadline.
Dan Eiten of the health department reported local enrollment has been strong since November and has been steadily increasing. “In the last two weeks, things have really picked up, and we expect this final week to be very busy. But we have great staff, and I’m confident we will be ably to accommodate anyone needing help,” he said. “We’ve had weekly targets that we have consistently met or exceed, so we are very pleased with that.”
Under the Affordable Healthcare Act, thousands of Illinoisans who were previously unable to get insurance can now get covered. All plans included in the Marketplace cover recommended preventive services free of charge, include a cap on out-of-pocket costs, have no lifetime or yearly dollar limit on coverage, and will not reject anyone on the basis of pre-existing condition.
