“It’saplayground.It’sso muchmore,”saidAndiCooper,alandscapearchitectand Hammerschmidtparentwho hasledtheLearn+PlayGardensproject.
OnSaturday,students,parentsandcommunitymembers gatheredtocelebratethecompletionoftheproject’ssecond phasewithaplaygroundribboncutting.
Coopersaidtheplanto enrichtheplaygroundbeganthreeyearsago.Thefirst phase,theEdibleGardens, wascompletedlastyear.Each gradeplantsvegetablesor herbsintheirownraisedbeds.
“Wesaidweknowweneed anewplayground,butwhat elsecanwedowithinthelandscapetomakeitabetter,more excitingplace?”Coopersaid.

Sincetheprojectaimstobe greenandsustainable,theold playgroundequipmentwas donatedtoKidsAroundthe World,aRockford-basedorganizationthatprovidesplaygroundsinothercountries. ThegroupwillreusetheformerHammerschmidtequipmentforanewplayground.
TheLearn+PlayGardens
havebeenfundedthrough acommunity-wideeffort,includingschoolfundraisers andDuPageCountygrants, alongwiththesupportofthe LombardParkDistrictandvillage.Coopersaidtheproject startedwithanabout$500,000 vision,butit’scomedownto lessthanhalfofthat.
Duringthephase-tworibboncutting,studentshelped spreadmulcharoundthenew equipmentasjustaportionof hundredsofvolunteerhours thathavegoneintotheproject.
“Wewantthekidsandthe neighborstotakeownershipof thisspaceandreallytakecare ofit,”Coopersaid,addingthat sincetheprojectbegan,she hasn’tseenanyvandalismor graffitiinthegardens.
Thethirdandfinalphaseis alreadyfunded,andCooperanticipatesitwillbecompletedin 2015.Phasethreeincorporates greeninfrastructuretechnologieslikeraingardensandpermeableconcretedesignedto easesomeofthefloodingissues aroundtheschool.

Burton’sroleas acompetitivetennisplayercontributed to her confusion;her coachescautionedherabout gaining weight.As ayoung teenshebegan to severely restrictherdiet,butthatdidn’thave the desiredeffect.
Shetriedanotherapproachafter watching amovie about agirlwithbulimia,aneatingdisorderthat involvesbingeeating followedbypurging —usually by vomitingorusinglaxatives.“Hiding mycondition throughouthighschool wasextremelydraining,” recallsBurton. At collegeinBoston,Burton felt isolatedanddepressed,andher condition worsened. Shespent fourmonthsintreatment forhereating disorderand relatedseriousmedicalissues.
Whenshe returned to herparents’homeinDowners Grove,she struggledwiththelackof structureand follow-upcare. Amonthlater, she went to Linden Oaks, apartof Edward-ElmhurstHealthcare, and begananintensiveoutpatientprogram forpeople witheatingdisorders.“Ilovedtheprogramandthe people,” says Burton.“I wasable to build ahealthy support systeminthisarea.”Shesays thatbuilding self-esteemisalso key to recovery.“Manywomen strugglewithbodyimage.BecauseI’mopenabout my struggles,theycan relateto me,” she states.

Whennoonewasather brother’shome,Samsbrought hertoahotelthathadnovacanciesandthentotheMaywood PoliceDepartment,wherehe andthewomanenteredhis personalvehicleanddrovetoa VillaParkhotel,wheretheyengagedinsexualacts,according todocuments.
Samstestifiedthetwohad flirtedandtalkedin asexualmannerthroughouttheir encounter,butthewomandeniedthis,sayingshehadfallen asleepinthecarandagainin thehotelwhilethesexualacts occurred,documentsstate.
Inhisdecision,Bakalissaid hefoundittroublingthatshe didnotseekhelpduringorimmediatelyaftertheincidentand founditdifficulttobelieveshe wouldhavefallenasleepafter findingshewasallegedlybeing assaulted.

Therewere19.6millionmilitaryveterans intheUnitedStatesasof2013,according totheCensusBureau.Ofthose,9.3million were65yearsandolder,and1.6million wereyoungerthan35.In2013,therewere3.6 millionveteranswithaservice-connected disability,whichisonethatwasaresultof adiseaseorinjuryincurredoraggravated duringactivemilitaryservice.
Theyservedbecausetheybelievedin somethingbiggerthanthemselves:Theybelievedintheircountry.Theysacrificedfor thebenefitofothers.Theyunderstoodthat acountrythatcherishesfreedomasanideal requiressomegiveuptheirfreedomforthe benefitofothers.

“WhenIstartedtalking aboutthis,IwastoldbypeoplethatIwasembarrassing DuPageCountybytalking aboutthefactthatwehave adrugproblem,”Jorgensen said,explaininghowhewas shockedbythenumberof drugoverdoseshesawinthe countyafterbeingelected coronerin2012.
In2012,therewere38heroin-relateddeathsinDuPage County.Thatnumbergrewto 46in2013.

Hisdad,MannyAgular, broughtAlextotheMonday presentationeventhough Mannyrealizedanevening infrontoftheTVmaysound moreappealingtoateen.

Jorgensensaidtheheroin-relateddeathsrangedin agefrom15to64in2013.While thedeathspredominantlyincludedmales,thereappears tobefewothertrends,Jorgensensaid.
