Altrusa stages fashion fundraiser

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Fashion helped support a good cause Saturday as men and women gathered in Geneva for Altrusa International of Fox Valley’s annual Seasons of Fashion fundraiser.

Event organizers said they hoped to raise more than $6,000 at Saturday’s event at Eagle Brook Country Club. The funds help support numerous Fox Valley organizations, including Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, Mutual Ground in Aurora and Lifespring in Aurora, said Jan Roman, the fashion show chair.

“We’re a service organization whose primary mission is to serve and support groups that involve literacy,” she said, adding that the group’s secondary mission is to support organizations that help women and children.

“We give so much back to the community for our kind of smallish size,” said Jill Falls, president of Altrusa International of Fox Valley. The organization has about 30 active members.

Altrusa International of Fox Valley also raises money to fund two $1,000 Waubonsee Community College scholarships for women who are starting over with a new career.

Saturday’s fashion show featured 18 casual, work and dressy outfits from Dress Barn.

A silent auction and a raffle of about 30 gift baskets accompanied the show.

Jennifer Brundige of Schaumburg said she attended Saturday’s show for the second year in a row because she supports the group’s mission.

“Aside from being fun, they’re a really good cause,” she said. “I used to work with the Elgin Community Crisis Center, so I love that [Altrusa] supports Mutual Ground and the scholarships and everything.”

The group’s publicity chair, Lynn Radford, said she joined Altrusa after she retired be-

cause she was looking for a way to give back that didn’t require a lot of time, as she travels often. She said she likes that Altrusa benefits local organizations and makes a difference in her community.

She said it was through Altrusa that she learned about Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, where she is now a tutor.

She said volunteers can give back in smaller ways, such as spending an hour playing bingo at a nursing home.

Geneva’s curbside leaf collection will start

A number of items were auctioned Sunday during the Help Becky Bounce Back Blowout fundraiser to help pay the medical bills for Maple Park native and 2004 Kaneland High School graduate Becky Nelson, who was injured in a hit-and-run accident in July.

‘Bounce back’ event to help area native

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Maple Park native Becky Nelson is slowly emerging from a coma after being injured in a hit-and-run accident in July.

“She’s making progress,” said her mother, Peggy Nelson.

“She’s coherent and talking.

You just take one day at a time.”

Peggy Nelson said she was heartened to see the outpouring of support at Sunday’s “Help Becky Bounce Back Blowout.”

The event was held at the Kaneville Community Center, where Becky Nelson had been a preschool teacher for seven years.

“It’s just nice to see everybody come out and support her,” Peggy Nelson said.

The event was successful, as one of the organizers, Audry Buchanan, said at least $24,238 was raised.

Becky Nelson, a Maple Park native and a 2004 Kaneland High School graduate, was hit by a car July 1 while living on Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands.

“She was walking on the sidewalk while going into town to watch the fireworks,” Peggy Nelson said.

“It is astounding how many people came together to donate for the silent auction. ” Audry Buchanan Event organizer friend Tom Wells of Batavia, who was shocked when he heard about the accident. Wells said Becky Nelson always had an exuberant personality.

“Nothing came easy for her, so she was going to get the most out of life,” Wells said.

The benefit featured a number of activities, including a silent auction, kids’ games, a bake sale put on by Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake and live music by local band Dave’s Not Here.

Buchanan, an Elburn resident and a singer in Dave’s Not Here, had the idea of putting on a benefit for Nelson.

While she had never met Nelson, Buchanan herself was in a coma for weeks after a car crash when she was 14.

Sunday’s benefit turned out bigger than she ever imagined.

“It is astounding how many people came together to donate for the silent auction,” Buchanan said. “This is going to raise thousands of dollars.”

GENEVA – Geneva’s curbside leaf collection starts Monday and will be conducted by geographical zones.

Pickups are scheduled for Nov. 5, Nov. 15 and Nov. 27 for residences east of the Fox River. Collections are set for Monday, Nov. 7 and Nov. 19, for residences west of the river and north of Route 38, or north of Kaneville Road and north of Keslinger Road.

For homes west of the river and south of Route 38, or south of Kaneville Road and south of Keslinger Road, pickups are set for Oct. 31, Nov. 12 and Nov. 22.

Leaves should be placed on the parkway parallel to the street and about 12 inches behind the curb or edge of the pavement by 7 a.m.

Halloween concert set at Kaneland High School MAPLE PARK – A Halloween concert by the Fox Valley Concert Band is set for 3 p.m.

Saturday at the auditorium of Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

Patrons can expect to hear music of the season and have the opportunity to participate in a costume contest. The event is approximately 90 minutes in length and appropriate for all ages.

Ticket prices are $8 for students and senior citizens, $10 for adults, and $25 for the family ticket which admits all family members living in one household.

Preschoolers are free.

Special recruitment meetings planned CASA Kane County also will be holding special recruitment meetings that are geared toward men interested in volunteering. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from some of the male CASA/GAL volunteers on how they have made a difference in the life of an abused or neglected child.

Currently, only about 22 percent of CASA/GAL volunteers are men, but half of the organization’s caseload involves boys and young men in need of strong role models.

CASA/GAL volunteers must first complete background checks and 40 hours of training before being sworn in by the Kane County Juvenile Court judge.

All training is provided by CASA Kane County.

Poised for resurgence As construction eases, customer traffic, interest building for corridor

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Marwan Taib cannot wait for Halloween to arrive this year.

For almost a year and a half, Taib, owner of the Spotted Fox Ale House on East Main Street, just east of Kirk Road, has endured some frightening times as he has worked to keep his restaurant business afloat without the luxury of an easy way for his customers to drive to his establishment.

“Things have been picking up lately,” Taib said. “But it’s still not what I would call good.

“I’m really looking to Halloween and the Christmas holidays, to have people coming back here.”

At the end of this month, the Illinois Department of Transportation is expected to complete most of its nearly 18-month-long project to reconstruct and widen Route 64 from Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 in West Chicago.

That roadwork began in April 2012.

The impacts of the roadwork on many businesses along the stretch of highway have been dire, particularly for shops that rely on regular customer traffic.

Among those businesses that failed during the construction were the Wendy’s fast food restaurant near Dunham Road and the Odyssey Greek restaurant near East Main Street and Kirk Road. Both those restaurants closed in July, according to a report supplied by the city of St. Charles.

Taib opened his restaurant shortly before the roadwork began and said the traffic into his place was so strong, he thought he had “found a gold mine” in the location.

But after the roadwork began and Route 64 was converted to a maze of construction barricades, dusty work zones and bumper-to-bumper traf-

fic at many hours of the day, customers became harder to unearth, he said.

The slowdown was particularly noticeable among his clientele from West Chicago or from west of the Fox River.

“It was pretty brutal,” Taib said.

He said the slowdown caused a number of his employees to quit because there wasn’t enough work for them.

However, as the work has been gradually completed, the customer traffic has in-

creased.

And when the state finally clears away the last of the barricades and work zones from the highway east of St. Charles, Taib said he believes his customer traffic will “finally get back to where it used to be.”

“We endured the really bad days,” Taib said. “And now, hopefully, we get to enjoy the benefits the new road brings.”

Local commercial real estate professionals said they believe the “East Gate-

way” corridor, as the area around the intersection of Route 64 and Kirk Road has been dubbed by the city of St. Charles, may be primed for a resurgence.

Kevin O’Donnell, president of O’Donnell Commercial Real Estate in St. Charles, said he has heard numerous reports of increased interest in a variety of properties in that region.

“There’s no question that North Avenue (Route 64) hurt us,” O’Donnell said. “But

now that access is back there again, activity has picked up now as well.”

He said landlords in the area have gotten creative in recent years, offering various special deals, such as free rent for a number of months, to attract tenants without reducing rents drastically.

“They’re being more aggressive,” O’Donnell said.

Neil Johnson, managing director and broker at Sperry Van Ness Landmark Commercial Real Estate in Geneva, said that area still offers a large amount of vacant storefronts, with more than 100,000 square feet of vacant retail space within a mile of Charlestowne Mall.

But he said in recent weeks, “leasing volume has increased in almost every sector,” including retail and office.

“Some of that new activity is clearly showing up in the East Main Street area for retail and restaurant leases,” Johnson said.

Johnson and Rita Tungare, community development director at St. Charles City Hall, said they are hopeful the area will get a double boost in coming months, both from the completion of the Route 64 roadwork and the promise of renovations at Charlestowne Mall.

New ownership has presented St. Charles City Hall with plans to revitalize the mostly vacant shopping mall, and Tungare said they couldn’t arrive at a better time.

“We think these improvements have the potential to create positive energy and some catalytic effects in that area,” Tungare said.

She already said the city has witnessed an increase in the number of inquiries regarding zoning and permits for that area.

“With the Route 64 work completing and Charlestowne coming up, the timing has worked out pretty well,” Tungare said.

Hotel Baker admits to Aldermen hear liquor license violation modifications

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For the second consecutive week, Mayor Ray Rogina is pondering the penalty for a liquor license violation.

Monday, legal counsel for Hotel Baker told the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission that his client didn’t contest the allegation that a patron left the establishment with an open bottle of alcohol.

Attorney Joe Klein did, however, ask that mitigating factors be taken into consideration. Enforcing the liquor laws at Hotel Baker requires more vigilance than at other establishments because it has overnight guests, hosts such events as weddings and birthday parties and has a bar and restaurant, he said.

Owner Joe Salas said the person who took the alcohol outside was a guest of the hotel and ordered the drink near closing time. Usually, he said, the assumption is guests will take the alcohol to their rooms.

Hotel employees know not to let liquor leave the premises, Salas said, noting they are “disappointed” with themselves for this violation.

The liquor commission discussed the issue for about 10 minutes in closed session.

Rogina – who also acts as liquor commissioner – said in open session that he will take the discussion under advisement and issue an order to Hotel Baker in seven to 10 business days.

He commended Salas and Klein for attending the meeting and providing the mitigating factors while admitting the hotel was in violation.

Doing so, he said, “showed a degree of class.”

Last week, the liquor commission held a formal hearing for The Filling Station, which also was accused of letting a patron leave its premises with open alcohol.

Rogina found The Filling Station guilty and later ruled it would have its liquor license suspended for two hours next month.

ST. CHARLES – A five-story building along the Fox River is now planned for Phase III of the First Street Redevelopment project.

This additional floor, along with other modifications, were included so the project can better meet the financial obligations regarding the related tax increment financing district.

“We’ve got to meet the city’s needs for the financial end of the project, as well,” Bob Rasmussen of First Street LLC told the Government Operations Committee Monday night.

The city must use its general revenue stream to make up any gap between the incremental revenue generated by the TIF and the debt service payments, Finance Director Chris Minick said.

“Neither one closes the gap entirely,” he said, referring to options for either three or four buildings on the property.

plan features three buildings that, combined, would have 104 residential units, as well as retail space. A parking deck also would be constructed.

The site is bordered by the Fox River and Illinois, First and Main streets in downtown St. Charles.

The update was for information only, but the St. Charles City Council is expected to take action on an extension for the project next month.

Rasmussen said the hope is to break ground next summer.

In other news, the City Council on Monday directed staff to draft an ordinance regarding drive-up windows for package liquor sales despite the Lundeens withdrawing their request for a drive-thru window at their new West Main Street store.

The Lundeens, who recently brought the issue to the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission, have the option to make the request later, 3rd Ward Alderman Bill Turner said.

GUSTAVUS LEVANT HACKLEY JR. ‘LEE’ Born: Dec. 24, 1917; in Oak Park Died: Oct. 16, 2013 OAK PARK – Gustavus Levant Hackley Jr. “Lee” was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Oak Park, one of five children born to Adeline Bangs Hackley and Gustavus Levant Hackley Sr. He grew up in Oak Park, graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School and then attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He served during World War II as an Air Corps pilot, but very briefly, much to his dismay, as the war came to an end.

He then launched his career in advertising with publishers including the Chicago Herald American, Saturday Evening Post and Parade Magazine. Later, Lee developed a career as an inventor and marketer of products in the automotive and recreational vehicle industries. Following the war in 1949, he and his wife, Helen, lived in Batavia and then Geneva, where they raised their three children, Chuck, Tom and Nancy. His work then moved them onto Wayzata, Minn. (1960 to 1967), Bloomfield Hill, Mich.

(1967-1980) and back to Geneva, where he enjoyed his retirement. After Helen’s death, he married Kathleen O’Brien Wilson who also had been widowed.

Their spouses and children had been longtime friends, and the

marriage now blessed them as a double family.

Lee was a member and leader of the Geneva Golf Club, Wayzata Country Club and Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, where he served as unification president and was awarded the colors of the hunt for his meritorious service.

Uncle Lee was adored by a generation of his nieces and nephews for whom he was the “Leader of the Pack” during many summers spent at the family cottage in Stony Lake, Mich.

He served on the vestry of the Calvary Episcopal Church in Batavia, PTO boards, Cub Scout Pack leader and as one of Delnor Hospital’s major fundraisers.

He also enjoyed leading roles in many amateur productions by the Playmakers Theater in Geneva and the St. Dunstan’s Theater in Bloomfield Hills.

On the morning of Oct. 16, Lee’s long life of 95 years came to a close. He is survived by his wife, Kay, with whom he shared a happy and joyful second wind for the past 28 years; his children, Chuck (and Lori) Hackley of Geneva, Tom Hackley (and Emily Bettencourt) of Harbert, Mich., and Nancy (and Dennis) Mummert of Harbor Springs, Mich.; three grandchildren, Heidi (Friedler), and Chip and Ethan; and by eight great-grandchildren, Patty, Henry and Kate Friedler of New Orleans, Charlie, Clay and Tommy Hackley of Wilmette, and Lucy and Beck Kackley of Denver.

Evelyn Coker Kleber, 85, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in Coronado, Calif., from

complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Francis (Frank) T. Kleber, who passed away in 2011.

Evelyn was born Feb. 24, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C., and raised in Nashville, Tenn. A 1950 graduate of Vanderbilt University, she was named “Lady of the Bracelet,” the highest award given annually to a female undergraduate.

Evelyn and Frank were married in 1952 and raised four sons (Chris, Dale, Fred and Evan).

From 1970 to 1984, the family lived in St. Charles while Frank worked at FermiLab. Throughout her life, Evelyn displayed an enduring compassion for society’s disadvantaged, a firm commitment to social justice and a deep belief in gender equality. These values were manifested in Evelyn’s active involvement in a broad range of nonprofit organizations, including Tri-City Family Services, Operation Headstart and Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice.

She served as president of the Geneva-St. Charles League of Women Voters in 1975-76 and subsequently worked on the professional staff of the League’s Illinois State Office.

Evelyn played a key role in The Illinois Court Watching Project and obtained a master’s degree in criminal justice from Chicago State University in 1979.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a gunners mate 3rd class in World War II. After the war, he made his career as a lithographer, and was a devoted husband and father.

She was the devoted wife of the late John Mariotti Sr. for more than 67 years; dearest mother; lifelong encourager and advocate of Patricia (Bob) Anderson, Frances (Don) Molinari, John Jr. (Linda), Rano (Sue), Ralph (Mary Lou) Ken (Tracey) and Ann Noreen (Kevin) Fidati; sweet, loving and enthusiastic grandmother of 25; and great-grandmother of 25.

She was the loving sister of Phyllis (the late Frank) Costabilo; the late Louise (the late Bill) Dudkowski; the late Pat, Joseph (the late Rosemary) and Antoinette (the late Joe) Di Domenico; and sister-in-law of Mary Dresback.

John and Ann became acquainted growing up on Lexington Street, Chicago. They were married Sept. 17, 1944, and began a beautiful lifelong relationship that continued to grow in Hillside,

John and Ann were founders of Woodland Windows and Doors, Roselle, which still is operated by the Mariotti family.

Two lawsuits challenging Illinois’ ban on gay marriage are being allowed to proceed, which means that same-sex marriage in Illinois could come from the courts rather than from the Legislature.

New Jersey on Monday became the 14th state to allow same-sex marriage because of a successful court challenge of its ban.

Lawmakers in the 2011 lame-duck session approved civil unions for gay and straight couples.

• Gun control: Lawmakers could hear bills aimed at increasing penalties for gun crimes and at scaling back the new concealed-carry law.

One bill seeks to create a three-year mandatory sentence for unlawful aggravated use of a firearm. Several seek to ban carrying in any establishment where alcohol is served – the current law bans weapons only from establishments that make more than half of their sales from alcohol.

Lawmakers were forced to craft a concealed-carry bill earlier this year after a federal appeals court struck down Illinois’ total ban – all other states allow residents some form of carrying weapons in public.

Passage of either bill is problematic, given the ideological divide in Springfield over the Second Amendment.

Chicago Democratic lawmakers advocate strict gun control and downstate lawmakers from both parties support gun rights, meaning legislation that tilts too far one way or the other often does not have the votes to pass. For the umpteenth time, the General Assembly returns to session with the state’s worst-in-the-nation unfunded pension liability looming large.

The only change that has come from previous sessions has been the growth of the liability, mostly through inaction of state lawmakers. The unfunded liability of the five state-run pension systems stands at $100 billion or more than double that, depending on how one crunches the numbers.

Lawmakers have reconvened for the fall veto session, which totals six days – today through Thursday and Nov. 5 to 7.

Will pension reform come this session? Not likely, for several reasons.

Bills that take effect immediately need three-fifths supermajorities to pass in veto session: 11 more votes in the House and six more in the Senate. And with an election year looming, most lawmakers will be reticent to weigh in on hot-button topics that will alienate large swaths of voters.

Several issues are likely to come up, even if they do not result in legislation moving forward.

• Pension reform: A 10-member bipartisan panel of House and Senate members has been meeting since June to develop a pension reform plan that would survive the inevitable lawsuit by the state’s powerful public-sector unions, which point to the guarantee in the state Constitution that benefits “cannot be diminished or impaired.”

Although the group has not yet reached consensus, it has focused on a plan to reduce the automatic 3 percent compounded annual increase, limit the salary used to calculate the pension and delay the age at which retirees would become eligible to receive the

annual cost-of-living adjustment.

The committee itself was born because of an impasse between dueling versions of pension reform championed

by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. Such “conference committees” are a rarely used political tool to reach consensus when both houses come to loggerheads.

Madigan’s proposal saved far more money, but Cullerton said his version, unlike the House one, would survive a legal challenge.

Lawmakers adjourned the spring session May 30 without acting on pension reform.

Two of the three major bond rating agencies then further downgraded Illinois’ credit rating, which is now the worst among all 50 states.

Twenty percent of the state’s 2014 budget is going to pay retiree pensions. Almost all of the new revenue gained by the state’s historic 2011 income-tax increase – 67 percent on individuals and 46 percent on businesses – has been swallowed by the state’s pension obligations.

The perceived delay in coming up with pension reform prompted Gov. Pat Quinn in July to freeze lawmakers’ pay until they came up with a plan. A Cook County court overturned the freeze, and the Illinois Supreme Court agreed last week to hear Quinn’s appeal.

• Same-sex marriage: Like pension reform, the odds of lawmakers passing a bill legalizing same-sex marriage are slim.

A bill already has passed the Senate, and Quinn has promised to sign it. But it still likely does not have the votes to pass in the House, which is why openly gay sponsor Greg Harris, D-Chicago, did not call it during the spring session, back when it needed 60 votes to pass.

Study: N. Aurora’s affordable housing stock down since ’00

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The amount of affordable housing in North Aurora has decreased since 2000, according to a study conducted by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

The results of the study were presented Monday to North Aurora officials.

The study also included the cities of Geneva and St. Charles.

According to the study, about 75 percent of owner-occupied homes in North Aurora were in the afford-

able category in 2000.

Affordable housing is defined as being less than 30 percent of a household’s income.

In 2011, that number dropped to just under 70 percent, according to the study.

However, the gap widened even more for rental units.

In 2000, 61 percent of the rental units in the village were affordable, but that number dropped to 38 percent in 2011, according to the study. The study stated that demand is shifting to renting as opposed to owning a house, and that demand for rental housing in

North Aurora is expected to grow at all income levels, especially those under $50,000.

The study also projects that North Aurora’s population will grow to more than 21,000 by 2040, up from the village’s 2011 population of 16,040, which is the latest population count for North Aurora.

The housing study is supported by CMAP and the Regional Transportation Authority, along with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Illinois Housing Council.

Geneva accepts donation for sculptural bike rack

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva is on its way to installing a sculptural bike rack with the help of a donation from a local business, which the city accepted at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Tim Vetang, chair of the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission, presented the council with a sketch of the sculptural bike rack, which will cost about $6,000. Fox Valley Orthopedics in Geneva supported Geneva’s Sculptural Bicycle Rack Public Art Program with a $3,000 donation toward the rack.

Vetang said the commission received 13 sketches for the bike rack and settled on a colorful sketch submitted

by Weston Lambert, who is a

professor of glass practice at Tulane University.

“After much discussion, we’re pleased to choose a bike rack sculpture that we think will capture people’s imaginations,” Vetang said.

“It’s very bright colorful.”

A sketch of the rack showed three arches in solid blue, red and yellow. Vetang said it would be installed in front of the Geneva History Center and will hold about six bikes. The rest of the project will be funded through grants from the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission.

In other business, the city’s Committee of the Whole approved a change to Geneva Business Park’s planned use development to allow a craft distillery to open at 204 Dearborn Court.

Michael Orlando, who

owns Fox River Distilling, asked the city to consider adding an amendment to the Geneva Business Park’s planned unit development to allow craft distilleries there.

The city’s plan commission unanimously recommended the change Sept. 26, and the recommendation then went to the Committee of the Whole. If approved by the City Council, Orlando would be able to offer tours of the distillery during normal work hours or scheduled tours for private parties and events, according to meeting documents.

The facility, which would be at 204 Dearborn Court, also would offer a tasting area where people can sample products, and sell branded merchandise and distilled spirits.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Nonprofit will offer training session Nov. 6 Fox Valley Court Watch, a nonprofit organization, is offering a training session Nov. 6 for interested volunteers in Kane and Kendall counties.

The Fox Valley Court Watch program currently monitors the judicial process in domestic violence courts in Kane and Kendall county judicial centers. Court watch observers are volunteers from the community, trained in domestic violence and court procedure – they monitor, evaluate and advocate improving services for victims of domestic abuse.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age, have an email address, daily email access and commit to a minimum of one half-day session on a weekday per month for at least six months.

Volunteers are required to attend one court session to observe the group’s function in the courtroom before making a final commitment.

Training for both counties is being held in the St. Charles Police Department training room, Door 4, 211 N. Riverside St., St. Charles, beginning at 8 a.m., with a continental breakfast, and ending at 4 p.m.

GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 will provide a free screening to assess children’s development, to determine need and eligibility for services for those with qualifying disabilities.

The screening will be Nov. 15 at Friendship Station, 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva. Appointments are necessary, and students must be registered in advance. Proof of residency is required in order to register a child for an Early Childhood Screening.

State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 years must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs.

The school district must offer an annual screening of these children in order to determine need and eligibility for services. Eligible children must be preschool age and reside within the district.

The district will provide screening in vision and hearing, speech and language, cognitive and motor, and social and emotional.

This screening is optional. It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kindergarten readiness.

Online dating – a work in progress

By AMANDA HESS Slate LOS ANGELES – A new study from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, released Monday, found that 59 percent of American Internet users believe that “online dating is a good way to meet people,” a 14-point jump since 2005.

Among Americans who identify themselves as “single and looking,” 38 percent say they’ve used a dating site or app to try to meet a match.

But 21 percent of plugged-in Americans still think that “people who use online dating sites are desperate.”

Even 13 percent of people who date online consider themselves desperate. Although online dating has become normalized, it’s still seen as a little sad.

I’d submit that the framework of popular dating sites like Match. com and OkCupid only contribute to that notion. These sites still situate online dating as a meat market for semi-anonymous singles, and they’re disconnected from the rest of our online (and offline) identities.

Our online dating profiles are typically not linked to our other public profiles, like Facebook and Twitter.

And the sites’ matching strategies – which connect users based on questions they’ve answered about themselves – rely on a primitive idea of the interplay between digital technologies and human relationships.

They assume that we can just plug our metadata into a computer, run it through an algorithm, scroll through a list of prospects sorted by the mathematical possibility that we’ll get along and find someone. That’s just not how human relationships work – not on the Internet and not off.

We all know that the Internet can be a powerful tool for connecting people, so why do these sites still carry some stigma? Perhaps because

the best connections, online and off, are made more holistically in the context of our everyday lives.

This explains the success of Tinder, the hookup app that enables daters to assess photographs of other singletons in their general area.

Tinder requires users to login through Facebook, which means that the dudes and ladies you’re meeting through the app are representing themselves roughly similarly to how they’re doing so on more public forms of social media. It helps that, in order to message someone on Tinder, you both have to “choose” each other, so you’re not inundated with missives from the creepiest users.

Tinder also lowers the barrier between checking someone out online and actually meeting them in real life; it’s only showing you geographically optimal options. While some of the matching questions on places like OkCupid can tell you important things about a potential partner – does this person think abortion should be legal or believe that gay marriage should not? – they can’t predict whether users will actually have chemistry with each other, which is maybe not the most important aspect of a lasting connection, but is certainly a requirement to get things started.

Still, Tinder feels like a stop-gap solution wedged between online dating and the full integration of the Internet into our romantic lives.

As online dating becomes more normal, and less desperate, we will feel less incentivized to segregate our online romantic dealings from our digital business connections and social spaces. That will mean that people will meet online closer to the way that we have always fallen for coworkers or friends-of-friends in person. No algorithm required.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Healthy academic competition To the Editor: This letter is regarding the proposed change in valedictorian and salutatorian status at Kaneland High School. Frankly, it’s disturbing to me that there is even a division of the school board on this proposal. I agree wholeheartedly with board members Teresa Witt and Tony Valente that we should keep both statuses because it is a healthy academic competition for all students.

With so much emphasis on athletic competitions in all of the Fox Valley school districts – and specifically at Kaneland – why shouldn’t there be academic competitions for the two highest honors in high school? In all honesty,

every child has a chance to obtain these honors, so why wouldn’t we want to promote this type of competition? Why would the board want to strip this academic recognition away from the successful students in the years to come?

I know personally that my daughter, who is a freshman at Kaneland, is striving to become valedictorian of her class as well.

All of the top-ranking students have earned this recognition and definitely deserve to have it reflected on their college applications.

I believe in this school

district as I have had two children graduate from Kaneland and go on to be successful college graduates and adults. I have a current student at Kaneland who excels at all of her academics and literally enjoys going to school so much that she won’t stay home even when she’s not feeling well.

I also believe that the school board will make the right decision and not take away a recognition that is so dutifully earned by the most academically successful students.

I hope more parents respond to that article in the paper as we need to stand by our children who strive to be all that they can be academically.

Rougas waits, pounces for Warriors IHSA Boys Soccer Regionals Breakdown Best first-round matchup: Geneva vs. Neuqua Valley at 3A Geneva Regional, 6:30 p.m. today. The 10th seeded Vikings closed the regular season by nearly upsetting fifth-seeded Neuqua, squandering a second-half lead last week in a wild, 5-4 loss.

Best potential regional final: Wheaton Academy vs. Fenton at 2A Glenbard South Regional, 4:30 p.m Friday.

Warriors coach Jeff Brooke thinks this year’s team faces a trickier early path than last year’s 2A state semifinalist Warriors did, beginning with St. Francis tonight and then in a potential regional final with Fenton or host Glenbard South. “Last year we went to the city, and I think we caught a couple teams off guard just because they didn’t know our style and our play, and obviously we don’t have that advantage this year,” Brooke said. “But we’re excited to play good competition, and I think the guys are ready for it.”

Best area bet to win a regional final: Burlington Central in Class 2A Sycamore Regional. Central was dominant most of the season and projects to advance to face Kaneland on Friday in a 2A regional final. The Knights have been up-and-down, and the health of midfielder Tyler Siebert is a key question for Kaneland entering the postseason.

Potential dark horse: Marmion at 3A Metea Valley Regional. Marmion has proven resilient after the jarring loss of senior Flynn Collins to injury. The Cadets haven’t seen postseason success since bumping up to Class 3A but are a scrappy enough bunch to threaten UEC Valley and overall UEC champion Metea Valley in a regional semifinal tonight.

Final thought: St. Charles East coach Paul Jennison thought his team’s loss to Metea last week – the Saints’ lone defeat of the regular season – was a healthy wakeup call leading up to regionals. Playing crosstown rival St. Charles North in Wednesday’s 3A St. Charles East Regional semifinal adds even more incentive for the Saints to find a high gear from the get-go, especially since East eked out a 1-0 win against struggling North in the teams’ regular season meeting.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Keeping his adrenaline in check can be a challenge, but Wheaton Academy junior Grant Rougas said beginning matches on the sideline has its benefits.

“I like that role because I can see how the game is going before [coming in],” Rougas said. “I’m never really surprised. Sometimes teams come out with a lot of energy and will surprise you, but when you come in and sub in, you already know how the game is going, so you know what you need to do to make an impact.”

The Geneva resident’s knack for doing so is evident to Warriors coach Jeff Brooke, whose top-seeded team begins postseason play tonight against St. Francis in an IHSA Class 2A Glenbard South Regional semifinal.

Brooke called Rougas – who has scored 10 goals this season as a Warriors super-sub – “an incredible spark off the bench.”

“We thought he’d probably get quite a few assists by slotting balls across

the face, but he’s really surprised us with his finishing ability, out of the air and also just when the ball’s at his feet,” Brooke said.

Rougas rotates in with standouts such as Casey Zimmerman and Reid Culberson at a winger spot for the Warriors (17-3-1), who clinched the Suburban Christian Conference championship last week in a hotly contested win against Marmion.

Brooke said Rougas has been adept at combining with players such as Ty Seager and Sam Hardy on the attack.

“We have a lot of speed across the front, so we bring him in to kind of bring that variety and get the ball to his feet rather than trying to fly it to the corner flag,” Brooke said.

“So any time we’re looking for a change of tactics, he’s a great option.”

Rougas recognizes he’s not as blazing-quick as some of his teammates, so he compensates with extra offseason focus on skillwork. He said the “foundation” of his game was laid as a young player training

with the Strikers club program and drilling under longtime area soccer guru Bernie Kehoe, an assistant coach at St. Charles East.

“It’s different for defenders that are used to marking up real fast guys, [defending] someone that isn’t really making through-ball runs,” Rougas said. “Especially Ty, he gets the ball, and he beats anyone. I’d put Ty against anyone. He can beat them just with his speed.

“I have to play a little bit differently if I want to get by them. I have to use my skills.”

Rougas’ older brother, Mark, also played for Wheaton Academy, and now competes collegiately at Cornerstone University (Mich.), an NAIA program.

One of the highlights of Rougas’ season so far was netting a pair of goals against his hometown school, Geneva. The Warriors beat the Vikings, 3-0.

Rougas is familiar with several of Geneva’s players, including close friend Jason Lagger.

The playoff pressure is off ACC after the Chargers banked their sixth win at the Cadets’ expense, which is a nice position to be in with 8-0 Montini coming to town Friday night. The Broncos are fresh off a 49-0 trouncing of injury-plagued Aurora Christian on Saturday.

On the bubble Several area teams enter the final week of the regular season with the possibility of finishing at 5-4, which would put them in varying degrees of anxiety when the IHSA announces the 2013 playoff field Saturday night.

Aurora Christian (5-3), St. Charles East (5-3), St. Charles North (4-4), St. Francis (4-4) and Wheaton Academy (4-4) are the five area teams eyeing playoff points especially closely this week, although Aurora Christian is a major favorite Saturday to beat Guerin for a playoff-clinching sixth win, while Wheaton Academy is a big underdog against Marian Central, with a loss knocking the Warriors from the playoff picture.

Among the other three schools, St. Francis sits in strongest position to make the cut with 40 playoff points (which measures strength of schedule). The Spartans, though, will need to defeat a solid, 5-3 St. Edward team Friday to become playoff-eligible.

St. Charles East also appears to be in good shape for the playoffs even if the Saints were to be upset Friday at Larkin. East has 37 playoff points leading up to Week 9.

St. Charles North is the area team with most cause to sweat. The North Stars have 30 playoff points, among the lowest statewide total for teams that are on the playoff bubble. Before those calculations come into play, however, North must avoid last year’s scenario of a Week 9 loss to South Elgin, which dropped North to a 4-5 final record in 2012. North visits South Elgin on Saturday afternoon.

Other schools – such as Batavia and Geneva – aren’t monitoring playoff points as much as enrollment numbers. Geneva and Batavia are currently slotted among the largest schools in the 6A field, although either or both could be bumped up to 7A depending on which schools ultimately qualify for the playoffs.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron has praised the all-around play of his fullbacks this season, and Bulldogs running back Anthony Scaccia joined the chorus after Batavia’s rout of St. Charles East on Friday.

“Our fullbacks are doing a good job,” Scaccia said. “Kevin Green, Anthony Moneghini, are sealing the end or the outside linebacker. I just see a wideopen seam, and I just hit it as hard as I can.”

Through eight weeks, Scaccia has 998 rushing yards and 232 receiving yards. Green has rushed for 123 yards on only 14 carries this season, while Moneghini has chipped in 90 yards on 13 carries.

Don’t take for granted what the Battlin’ Bulldogs have done each of the past two weeks.

Batavia absolutely shredded both St. Charles North and St. Charles East in back-to-back weeks, both teams that are in playoff contention. By halftime, both of those games were over, practically speaking.

The Bulldogs are improving week to week, and

they were pretty doggone good to start with – just ask Glenbard North. That blowout over Geneva is looking better by the week, too.

Friday’s game against Elgin might not be that interesting for the Bulldogs, but everything after that sure will.

East swimming makes time for some laughter Not even the best comedians can deliver punch lines under water, so the St. Charles East girls swimming team takes advantage of downtime.

“We get breaks in between sets,” senior Stephanie Garvin said, “so that’s when we joke around. And when we’re at the wall.”

In a season that’s shaping up to be no laughing matter, the Saints find themselves about as giddy as a group of girls attending swim lessons with their best friends at the municipal pool.

All the better to push through training and the daily mental grind, the latter of

“It’s really hard and we’ve been doing a lot of yardage lately, but we just laugh a lot at practice and make jokes, so it’s fun,” Garvin said. “We have a good time.”

Saints coach Joe Cabel doesn’t mind, knowing veterans such as Izzie Bindseil, Shea Hoyt and Garvin know

when to shift the focus from yuks to yardage.

“No doubt about it, they’re a lighthearted group,” Cabel said. “I’m the heavy heart in the group. I get on them a little bit and they listen real hard and then they giggle a little bit after I get done, so I’m not sure just how much effect I’m having. But they’re doing a great job. They’re great kids.”

The Saints have been rolling lately, winning last week’s road dual against St. Charles North a few days after finishing as runners-up to three-time defending state champion New Trier at East’s college events meet.

While the Saints are highly unlikely to pull any gags when they climb into starting position during the state series, they see no harm in a few laughs along the way.

Can being goofy really have that long a shelf life?

“Yes, definitely,” Garvin said. “It really helps us stay focused, as well, if we joke around and have fun. It makes us more excited for practice.”

Just like he planned: Speaking of shelf lives, the preseason goal sheets athletes often concoct don’t always hold up to the old time capsule.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team turned the tables on Waubonsie Valley, defeating the Warriors, 28-26, 25-21, on Monday night.

Waubonsie was the lone team to beat East (27-6) at Glenbard East’s tournament over the weekend.

“We served aggressively,” East coach Jennie Kull said.

“When we were playing them on Saturday, we had game point twice, and we missed our serves. We were actually down most of [Game 1 Monday], and at the end of the match, we really served aggressively, and took them out of their game.”

Megan Schildmeyer had 14 kills, Anne Hughes made 20 digs and Carly Jimenez supplied 26 assists for East.

Kull is just a few days removed from hitting the 500win mark for her career at the Glenbard East tournament.

She coached the Saints to IHSA state titles in 2001 and 2008.

“I’m the kind of person that likes to live in the moment,” said Kull, drawing attention to a crucial conference match tonight against Geneva. “I’m so proud of those accomplishments, but I really do give this kind of thing to the players that have played for me and my assistant coaches. That’s what makes it possible. I’m just as good as my next match.

I’ve always been like that, and that’s always been my philosophy as coach.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE NORMAL – Mired in a duel with Rockford Boylan’s Danny Gorman for the individual title at the Class 2A boys golf state meet, Burlington Central senior Matt Weber admitted to blinking Saturday.

Heck, Weber was downright pensive as the biggest moments of his prep career kept refreshing themselves down the stretch at Weibring Golf Club.

“A lot of people influenced my life at Burlington and it was a great time,” Weber said. “I really wanted to embrace that on the last hole and really not dwell on whether I would win or not.”

Weber ultimately fell a stroke short of Gorman, shooting a two-day 143 to finish 1-over par as the state runner-up.

With Day 1 leader David Perkins of East Peoria struggling – bogeys on Nos. 7 to 9 effectively ended his day – Weber and Gorman, playing in the same group, soon knew they were vying for No. 1.

Weber drew to within a stroke on No. 17 by parring a par-3, and had the chance to tie when he hit his tee shot within about eight feet of the pin. The putt lipped out, and both players bogeyed the final hole.

His 72 helped the Rockets keep pace in their pursuit of the team title. Austin Niesel (81), Andrew Sherman (84) and Jacob Ledebuhr (86) rounded out the scoring for BC, which placed fourth as a team, 15 strokes behind champion Rockford Boylan.

“They’re going to have a pretty decent team next year,” Weber said. “They’re going to have three seniors and some youth, so that’s really huge.”

Speaking of experience, St. Charles North senior Raghav Cherala closed a decorated four-year career with a twoday 163 at the 3A meet held at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in adjacent Bloomington.

It was Cherla’s eighth hole of the day and easily his biggest roadblock, but North Stars coach Rob Prentiss beamed at the way Cherala persevered.

“I’m tremendously proud of Raghav no matter what he shot this weekend,” Prentiss said. “He is just a wonderful young man. He had a brutal break on his eighth hole and kept going on. No outward outburst of anger or anything. Just took it like a man and went on to the ninth tee.

Just real proud of how he handled himself.”

St. Francis finished eighth among 12 teams in 2A, led

by Jonathan Nocek (two-day 162), Dan Mochel (164), Connor Buckley (168) and John Stolte (169).

Kaneland senior Matt Yonkovich stormed onto the individual leaderboard with a 1-over 72 on Saturday, he finished at 8-over for the tournament and tied for fifth with Troy Triad’s Austin Buente.

“Today was the more typical day for him than [Friday] was,” Knights coach Mark Meyer said. “He struck the ball better today than he did before and he continued putting very well.”

A pair of Chronicle-area girls teams were part of the fields at the Class A and AA meets a little deeper downstate in the Decatur region.

North finished ninth among 12 teams with a twoday 667 at the Class AA meet at Hickory Point Golf Club.

Prospect won the tournament with a 612.

“We didn’t play that badly, and five, 10 years ago, what we shot today would have been good enough for third, fourth place,” North Stars coach Chris Patrick said.

In the program’s first team state appearance since 2005, freshman Kate Lillie closed with a 76 to lead the way. Lillie beat Carly Hudon (81 Saturday) by four strokes for the top overall score. Gianna Furrie (84) and Jessica Grill (91) rounded out North’s scoring on Day 2.

“Carly was consistent, Kate had a great round today and Gianna, obviously wanted to play better and she’s capable of doing better,” Patrick said. “But it was tough conditions. It was windy. It was a tough course in certain spots.

But I’m proud of these girls.

They accomplished a lot this year.”

Rosary coach Joe Hughes has trumpeted a similar refrain about the Royals, who made their team state debut in the Class A meet at Red Tail Run Golf Course. Rosary finished 10th behind senior Victoria Phipps, whose 85 Saturday gave her a two-day 166.

Jenna Streich (193), Annika Strolle (202) and Morgan Martinez (207) followed.

Phipps tied for 22nd individually.

In 1A boys play at Bloomington’s Prairie Vista Golf Course, Aurora Christian’s Brett Seward tied for 41st overall with a two-day 165.

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva didn’t crown any singles or doubles champions at Saturday’s St. Charles East Sectional girls tennis tournament, but the Vikings walked away with the team championship plaque anyway.

Geneva used second- and thirdplace finishes in singles and a fourth-place performance in doubles to edge Batavia, 23-21, for the team title.

Geneva junior Kirby Einck dropped a tough championship match to Sycamore sophomore Angelina Ye, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

“I play her so much and every time it’s so close and then she ends up winning,” Einck said. “Of course, she’s my toughest competitor. I really wanted that.”

Ye defeated Einck in the semifinals of last year’s sectional tournament at East and went on to win four of six matches in the state tournament, including another victory over Einck.

This time, Ye led just 3-2 in the third set before winning three straight games to close out the match.

“She stepped up her game,” Einck said. “I just wasn’t playing my A-game and didn’t bring it enough.”

As one of the top four finishers, Einck will advance to next week’s state tournament, hosted by Buffalo Grove High School and played at various courts in the region.

“I reached my goal,” Einck said.

“I did better than I did last year. I got second place. Overall, I’m happy with it. That [championship] match – unfortunately, I lost it, but I felt like I played well.”

Einck, who also went 4-2 in matches at last year’s state meet, will be joined in the singles competition this year by teammate Grace Krueger, who took third place with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Batavia’s Nora McClure.

“I thought I did pretty well,” Krueger said. “My goal was to make it to state and I accomplished that, so I’m happy.”

Krueger, a freshman, dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Ye in the semifinals.

“I’ve learned a lot from Kirby,” Krueger said. “I’ve learned how to just hit more aggressively with

Kirby because she’s such a hard hitter.”

McClure is one of five Bulldogs heading to state. The Bulldogs advanced both of their doubles teams, with Jenny Mizikar and Amelia Cogan finishing second and Brooke LeFevre and Sydnee Unterberg placing third.

Mizikar and Cogan dropped a contentious title match to the Bartlett duo of Jennifer Gates and Gabriella Gregorio, 7-5, 6-0.

An impartial line judge was dispatched to rule on disputed calls and harsh words were exchanged by players and spectators alike at the conclusion of the match.

Afterward, Mizikar and Cogan tried to wash away the bad taste from that match by reflecting on the positive aspects of the tournament.

“I believe that me and Jenny played phenomenally this weekend,” Cogan said. “We stayed together through winning and losing.

We played with grace and we never doubted each other for a second.”

Mizikar, a senior, said she’s looking forward to making her third trip to state with Cogan.

“I’m really excited,” she said.

“This is our third year together and our final year. We’re going to come out with a big bang. It’s going to be fun, especially with some other teammates going. I’m really excited about that.”

LeFevre and Unterberg reached the semifinals by knocking off the No. 2-seeded doubles team of Lexi Welton and Betsy Jones, 7-5, 6-3.

The Batavia pair then fell to Gates and Gregorio, 6-1, 6-2, before bouncing back with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Margo Hess and Emma Hazel of Geneva in the third-place match.

“We worked hard and we never doubted ourselves,” Unterberg said.

“We just kept fighting every point.

It felt so good to pull through.”

The duo qualified for state in their first year as partners.

“As a senior, it feels great because this is my first year going,” LeFevre said. “I’m really excited.

I hope we can do as good as we did here.”

Wheaton Academy and St. Charles East tied for fourth in the team standings with 14 points apiece, but failed to advance any players to state.

Also shut out of state competition was St. Charles North, which finished seventh in the 10-team field with six points.

No car wash can clean Bears’ mess after loss LAKE FOREST – You’ll have to forgive Jay Cutler if his timing was off Monday at Halas Hall.

As he stared at his cell phone, Cutler turned a corner in the practice facility and started to hobble toward the double doors that led to the Bears’ locker room. That’s when the veteran quarterback glanced up and spotted a group of reporters exiting the room.

Change of plans.

Cutler wheeled around – that is to say, he wheeled around as fast as someone with a muscle tear in his groin is able to wheel around, which is not fast at all – and took aim toward a video room that is off-limits to media members. He buried his head in the phone in his palm.

He limped with purpose, with passion, with the mindset

If only the Bears could escape their reality as easily as Cutler could escape snot-nosed journalists.

These are dark days for the Bears, and not because the sun is starting to set before 6 p.m. It’s because they will be without their most important player on offense, Cutler, for at least the next four weeks (emphasis: “at least”), and they will be without their most important player on defense, Lance Briggs, for an estimated six weeks.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys cross country team narrowly edged out Batavia, 43-44, to take first place in the River Division at the Upstate Eight Conference meet Saturday morning at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve.

Max Rowland led the way for the Saints with a time of 15:25.5, and was joined by teammates Mark Sciurba (15:26.0), Lucas Werner (15:44.1), Mike Skora (15:49.3) and Mike Gerkin (15:52.2).

St. Charles East coach Chris Bosworth was pleased to see Rowland establish some consistency in his past few races.

"He's been kind of inconsistent, but these last two meets, he's stepped up," Bosworth said. "We've gotten him on the right track now which is perfect."

Batavia's second-place finish was paced by junior Ryan Wieties' time of 15:30.3. Wieties was disappointed with how the team points added up, but he was proud of his team's ability

to stick together through the course.

Geneva senior Blaine Bartel finished first in the River Division, clocking in at 15:17.3 to spark the Vikings a fourthplace team finish.

"It felt great. I mean, today I stayed controlled for the first two miles but I picked it up with a half mile to go, so I felt pretty good," Bartel said. "It pumps me up a little bit more for regionals and sectionals."

The top five team scores in the River Division were rounded out by St. Charles North (69), Geneva (85) and Larkin (142).

On the girls side, Geneva won the River Division race with 34 points, finishing ahead of St. Charles East (66), St. Charles North (74), Batavia (87), and Streamwood (104).

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Our Victorian ancestors made many of the toys their children played with. Inexpensive printed fabrics were designed to be cut out and sewn into dolls, games or toys.

The fabric usually pictured all the parts of a colorful toy. There also were printed instructions explaining how to assemble the pieces and, if necessary, how to stuff it. We have seen stuffed Christmas stockings made from prints that featured Santa, evergreens and other Christmas decorations. There were many versions of “Pin the Tail on the Donkey.” A similar game made in about 1900, called “The Monkey Donation Party Game,” was made from a white fabric with a black printed monkey holding a stitchedon circular piece with the words “Please put a penny in the cap.”

During the first quarter of the 20th century, many manufactured fabrics could be made into advertising dolls. Printed fabric was inexpensive to make and to mail. An unusual printed toy of that period is a ball made of six colored oval pieces.

Each piece pictures a baby holding a finished ball. It was made in 1900 by Art Fabric Mills, and the fabric included printed instructions and the words and music of a lullaby. A collector recently paid $165 for a homemade ball in unfaded condition, but the uncut pattern sells for more - about $200 to $300. A flat piece of fabric can be framed and displayed on a wall. The assembled ball is less decorative. ** * Q: I recently acquired a vintage dining room table, one table leaf and five matching chairs. The wood is walnut, and the table is very ornate. We found a paper label on two of the chairs. It reads “Midwest Furniture & Chair Co.” I can’t find any information about the company.

A: Midwest Furniture & Chair Co. was in business in St. Joseph, Mo., in the 1920s. Your set would be worth more if you had a sixth chair. Sets by the same maker have sold recently for $450 and $675, but both had at least six chairs plus a sideboard or buffet. So your table and five chairs might sell for $200 or less. *** Q: I have a letter opener that reads “Pan-American Exposition, 1901” on the blade and a picture of the fair’s Electric Tower on the handle. The back has fruit and flower designs. It’s silver-colored, but I’m not sure if it’s sterling silver.

Does it have any value?

A: The Pan-American Exposition was held in Buffalo, N.Y., from May to November 1901. Many souvenir items were made picturing the buildings and other features of the fair. The Electric Tower pictured on your letter opener was the tallest structure at the fair and was often pictured. Most souvenir items are silver plate, not sterling silver. Your letter opener is probably worth about $25. Here’s a little history: President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while the president was shaking hands with visitors in the Temple of Music on the fairgrounds on Sept. 6, 1901. Tip: If you’re polishing a woodenhandled copper or silver teapot, be sure to cover the wood so it’s not stained by the metal polish.

Killinen, Prop.” in raised letters. The bottle was covered in dirt but is clear glass. The top is broken off, but it will still make a nice vase once the jagged part is cut off or ground down. I don’t think it has value, but I’d like to know how old it is and

Q: I have come across a “Grimm Cover,” which apparently is some sort of commode or potty or “thunder-mug” cover. It’s made of galvanized steel and is embossed “Grimm Cover, Patented July 19, 1804.” Have you ever seen another one?

A: You actually have a sap bucket cover, not a commode cover.

A patent for a “new and improved sap-spout and cover” was granted to G.H. Grimm in 1904 (not 1804).

His newly designed spout and cover made it possible to pour sap without removing the bucket from the hook that attached it to the tree. The covers were made in two sizes, 12 and 14 inches. It’s not clear how many years they were made, but they were still in Grimm’s catalog

‘Carrie’ enters familiar territory

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Three things crossed my mind during the end credits to the remake of Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s book “Carrie”: a memory of Gus Van Sant’s 1998 remake of “Psycho,” the phrase “What for?” and a strong belief that this version’s director, Kimberly Peirce, blew the ending.

“Psycho” was boasted of as being a frame-for-frame remake of the Hitchcock classic, and it actually was. And though this “Carrie” isn’t exactly a frame-for-framer, it’s close enough to tie right into that second thought: What for? Why remake a movie without adding anything new or improved? Both films took King’s book about a terribly shy loner of a girl, raised by a single mom who is so twisted by her religious beliefs she’s sure that everybody but her and her daughter is one, big collective devil.

Carrie (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her mom Margaret (Julianne Moore) are nice pieces of acting, but a lot of people saw the first film, and there will be comparisons. Moretz doesn’t appear to be quite as haunted as Sissy Spacek did the first time around, nor does Moore seem quite as seriously whacked as Piper Laurie. Both are damaged goods, but Mom almost revels in that fact, while Carrie – the object of ridicule and scorn in her senior year in high school, and likely for many years before – is desperate to be thought of as “normal.”

Normalcy, of course, shouldn’t involve Mom regularly shoving her into a cramped closet space to pray for her soul, but that’s the life the Bible-thumping Mom has handed to her. Mom also works as a seamstress, and has an affinity for sharp objects, to be used as weapons on others or to matter-of-factly abuse her own skin.

The film gets down to business quickly with a faithful recreation of the original’s infamous girls locker room shower scene which, since it takes place in a high school, gives new meaning to the term “first period.” It also swiftly sets up the relationships between innocent, naive Carrie and the students and faculty members

For those who don’t know the book and haven’t seen the first film, the only important bit to be revealed here is that she’s capable of telekinesis, and other manifestations of the ability to move objects with the mind. But don’t make her angry. You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.

The story is really a study of cruelty – of bullies and self-centered (or disturbed) individuals who would have others follow their way and only their way. Lord knows (oops, a religious reference) that teens have a tough enough time dealing with everyday life without these kinds of complications.

Carrie’s main foe (after her crazy mom) is Chris (Portia Doubleday), the school’s main mean girl, who has made a target of Carrie just because she’s kind of different. We also get a befuddled and wimpy school principal, a concerned gym teacher, another mean girl who turns good, and Carrie who, driven to extremes, soon discovers, researches and starts practicing her powers against those who would do her harm.

Our protagonist goes from being miserable to becoming happy to turning into one of those characters that makes a horror story a horror story.

A quick apology for saying that there’s nothing new about this version. The shower scene is caught on a smartphone and posted on the Web, and “Dancing with the Stars” gets a shout out. Other than that it’s familiar territory – less gothic and gaudy than De Palma’s and just a little more over the top in visual effects of mayhem.

The third thing that crossed my mind was the problem with the ending.

Suffice it to say, the original’s caught audiences off guard. We got something we weren’t expecting, resulting in a wonderful communal scream. This one sets up the same ending, then pulls the rug out from under us. The audience I saw it with reacted with a communal groan.

It stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore and Judy Greer. The film is rated R.

Emergency room is exciting place for right kind of doc Dear Doctor K: My son is in medical school and is thinking of specializing in emergency medicine. What are the qualities of a good emergency medicine doctor?

Dear Reader: When I was a medical student, I was attracted to work in the emergency department (ED). (EDs are also called emergency rooms, or ERs – as in the TV show.) It was really exciting. So many of the patients were very sick, but if you made the right diagnosis and gave the right treatment, you could save lives – every day.

Ultimately I decided to go in a different direction, but I understand your son’s interest in emergency medicine. I recommend that your son – and you – read an enlightening new book written by my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Michael VanRooyen with John Hanc: “Code Blue: The Making of an Emergency Physician.” In the book, Dr. VanRooyen, who is himself an emergency physician, reflects on the traits that characterize a top ED physician.

ED doctors must think fast and be able to make decisions quickly, but they also must be

A big part of what makes emergency medicine unique and compelling is the variety of patients and problems ED doctors care for. That’s another part of emergency medicine that appealed to me. You might see a person with terrible abdominal pain – then someone who suddenly can’t move his right arm and leg – and then a person who is seeing and talking to people who aren’t there. And all that is interspersed with people with bad colds, or twisted ankles, to give you a little breather.

You have to know just what to do, and fast, to handle a remarkably wide range of problems. Make the right decision, and you save a life. Make the wrong one, and the patient may get even sicker. And sometimes,

you have just minutes to make your decision – or nature will make it for you.

Emergency medicine is the purest form of rapid diagnosis. Emergency doctors don’t get a patient with a diagnosis; instead, they get a patient with symptoms. It’s up to the doctor to make the right call.

ED doctors must be fastpaced, but able to stop on a dime; able to grasp the big picture, but detail-oriented; well-trained but flexible; able to make a decision, and often to lead a team of health professionals to provide urgent care for a patient.

If this sounds like the skill set required of a commander in battle, that’s because it is. And if it also sounds like the role of a point guard on an NBA basketball team, that’s because it is.

That’s a lot to ask from any physician, and it’s why emergency medicine is not for everyone.

But it is exactly the right choice for the right kind of doctor.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and an only child. I really don’t like being the only child because my parents can really concentrate on the things I do wrong. I can’t blame anybody else if I do something wrong because there is only me.

When my girlfriend and I went shopping at the mall last week, we met these two guys who invited us to drink a little bit of beer and to make out – no sex, just heavy kissing. I had two beers and was a bit tipsy, but I knew everything that was happening, so I wasn’t really drunk. These guys had a car and dropped us off at my girlfriend’s house.

I called my mom and she picked me up.

On the way home, she detected the beer on my breath and I admitted what we had done. She became very angry.

When we got home she called my friend’s mom and told her about our beer-drinking experience. So, now I am restricted to my house for 30 days (except for school) and forbidden to see my friend anymore.

My friend, who has two older sisters and an older brother, was grounded for a week. As you can see, I got punished more severely because I’m an only child, and I don’t think this is fair.

I shouldn’t have consumed the beer, and I admit that it was a stupid thing to do, but to be restricted for a month and not allowed to see my best friend ever again is a bit much. My friend had nothing to do with my drinking. It was my choice. It was the same thing for her.

I didn’t encourage or force her to drink the beer. It was her choice.

That is why my friend was not told that she

I really am upset that my freedom has been taken away from me. I think I am being punished much more than my friend because I am an only child, and this isn’t fair. What can I do to get my parents to lighten up about discipline? – Nameless, Reno, Nev. Dear Nameless: Your status as an only child has nothing to do with the discipline you received. If you had siblings, your parents still would have meted out the same “sentence” to you.

My advice to you is to stop complaining and inventing excuses for your punishment. No matter what happened to your friend, you got what you deserved.

You showed a lack of maturity and violated the trust your parents placed in you. Now you need to restore their trust. Be pleasant and helpful around the house while you’re on restriction. Mom and Dad love you and just may relax the severity of the punishment if they believe you’re genuinely contrite.

When you’ve begun to repair your relationship with your mother, see if you can get her to meet with your friend’s mom and discuss the situation. She may eventually let you get back together with your friend, but this will only happen if you have a positive attitude and have learned from your mistake!

That assertion would not meet with universal agreement. However, at the bridge table, missing a chance to make a contract can be a bad mistake. Let’s see if you can produce the winning line in today’s deal.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the spade queen. How should declarer play?

South’s two-no-trump response showed a balanced 10-12 points with no four-card major.

(South might have made a limit raise in diamonds, especially if via a two-diamond inverted minor-suit raise, but we much prefer no-trump to a minor. Yes, I have noticed that five diamonds is laydown.)

First, a defensive point. East must either signal encouragement with his seven or, even better, throw the king onto the table. West would not have led the queen without the jack and nine.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, three hearts, one diamond and two clubs. But given that his spade ace will have evaporated by trick two, he cannot afford to lose the lead until he is home.

The natural instinct is to take the diamond finesse. But there is a second, admittedly unlikely, chance. Before gambling on the diamonds, cash dummy’s club ace and king. Here the queen drops and declarer has nine winners via one spade, three hearts, one diamond and four clubs. If the club queen does not appear, South crosses to his hand with a heart and runs the diamond 10.
