Rutland Township passes on chance to fund bus service

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Rutland Township officials seemingly have reached the consensus that senior citizens and disabled Rutland Township residents in Sun City, Huntley, likely won’t have a bus service come Nov. 30.

But Rutland officials differ on whether the end of a bus service for those with mobility issues is the best decision for their constituents.

On Oct. 8, the Rutland board passed on the opportunity to fund a bus system for residents, with the board’s four trustees wanting more information on potential options.

“Basically nothing happened at the meeting,” Rutland Township Supervisor

Margaret Sanders said. “They want it on the next agenda and want more information. I’m a little disgusted at the whole thing.”

Grafton Township Supervisor Jim Kearns had earlier informed Rutland officials that his township would stop serving Rutland residents in Sun City by Nov. 30, unless Rutland decided to contribute $24,000 toward the $80,000 that Grafton spends annually to operate its bus system.

Nearly 57 percent of the more than 4,100 seniors and disabled residents who use Grafton’s bus service are Rutland Sun City residents.

Grafton has been trying to conserve costs as it rebounds from near bankruptcy earlier this year.

Sanders presented the

board Oct. 8 with the idea of joining Kane County’s “Ride in Kane” program, which provides on-call buses to senior citizens and disabled residents throughout the county.

Kearns also presented the board with a counteroffer. He would raise fares to Rutland residents from $1 to $4 per ride and ask Rutland Township to pay $1,200 a month, or $14,400 total for the year.

The fare increase and Rutland’s contribution still would bring $24,000 total to Grafton’s coffers, Kearns said.

But the board’s four trustees balked at both options, preferring more time to review the matter. The board will meet Nov. 12 to discuss the issue, but Sanders said she doubted Rutland could get a system in place by Nov. 30.

Agritourism attractions rise in McHenry County

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com Once October starts, Vernon Stade can anticipate the many families waiting for hayrides to go pumpkin picking or the numerous kids wanting to use the Happy Harvester, a John Deere combine turned slide.

Like clockwork, thousands usually descend on his Stade’s Farm and Market, near Johnsburg, during a typical October weekend to take advantage of comfortably cool weather and the changing fall scenery.

They come to pick berries, get lost in a corn maze, see pumpkins hurl out of a cannon, hang out with the rabbits and goats at the petting zoo or experience the more than two-dozen “farmtractions” that populate the 600acre farm owned by Stade.

“It’s unique entertainment,” Stade said. “You can’t

get this kind of thing anywhere else. It’s everything rural, healthy and wholesome.

Where else are you going to find a corn maze or a combine with a slide through it?”

The fall entertainment didn’t exist on the farm until the late 1990s, when Stade made the decision to use his farm for agritourism, a business idea that is growing among many rural areas throughout Illinois.

Farms that use agritourism are offering attractions, homegrown produce and agricultural services to the public.

In McHenry County, 32 farms, orchards and markets in rural areas such as Harvard, Marengo and Woodstock gear their business toward family-oriented agritourism.

All have seen a consistent increase in visitors each year, including urban travelers from Chicago and Milwaukee looking to experience a day in

the country, according to the McHenry County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Due to the rural nature of McHenry County, agritourism is our largest attraction,” Executive Director Jaki Berggren said. “With abundant agritourism attractions in every corner of the county, it’s easy to plan a day apple picking, playing in a corn maze or finding the perfect pumpkin or Christmas tree.”

As the rise in popularity for agritourism has grown, many of the farms and orchards in McHenry County have expanded their attractions.

At Stade’s Farm and Market, agritourism now makes up 50 percent of the farm’s business. The other half belongs to Stade’s decades-long commercial farm operation that produces corn and soybeans.

She still is committed to the idea of providing a bus service to all Rutland residents but is lost on ideas that would satisfy Rutland trustees.

“I’m open to any suggestions that the community has to offer,” Sanders said.

A part of the concern over creating Rutland’s own bus service is that it ultimately will lead to property-tax increases, said Rutland Township Trustee Charleen Carlsen, who campaigned on keeping property taxes flat for residents.

Carlsen has rejected the notion that Rutland has enough reserves to pay for a service, arguing that the reserve fund can’t sustain the service in future years. The other issue,

8NEWS BRIEF New ramps at Huntley I-90 interchange open HUNTLEY – The majority of the new ramps constructed at the Route 47-Interstate 90 interchange in Huntley opened to traffic Oct. 11, a sign that the $61 million project is near completion.

The Illinois Tollway Authority announced that motorists traveling along I-90 would be able to use four of the new ramps. The two additional ramps leading motorists west toward Rockford still are under construction.

Drivers traveling west on I-90 from Chicago will use two new ramps, exiting north and southbound to Route 47. Drivers traveling north and south along the new Route 47 bridge will use two new eastbound ramps to access I-90.

Huntley officials also met with the Tollway on Tuesday about the interchange update. Construction on the full interchange should be completed by early November, village officials said.

No tolls will be collected at the interchange until all ramps are open to traffic.

ALGONQUIN – Small businesses across the country are competing for a chance to win a 30-second advertisement in this year’s Super Bowl, including more than a dozen McHenry County businesses.

The Intuit Small Business Big Game campaign has attracted plenty of attention from business owners and other groups looking for free exposure during one of the most-watched sporting events.

Among the hundreds of Illinois businesses that have made it to the second round of the contest are 13 local businesses, including an Algonquin bakery, a Woodstock power washing service and a Crystal Lake construction company.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for a small business to be seen by millions of eyes,” said Susan Dobbe, president of Crystal Lake-based Dobbe Marketing & PR. “It would be an amazing jumping off point for any small business because Super Bowl ads aren’t just seen by potential customers, but also by consultants, accounts and other professionals that may be able to help you sell your widget to a whole new set of customers.”

However, Dobbe warned that Super Bowl-level exposure might prove overwhelming for small businesses not ready to deal with an influx of new customers. The attention could crash websites, jam phone lines and frustrate business owners.

“It could knock you down if you’re not prepared,” she said.

However, even companies that don’t win may end up benefiting from the experience by thinking outside the box and using the videos and other materials they produce for the Intuit contest to find new customers and exposure elsewhere, Dobbe said.

In the third round, which starts later this month, Intuit employees will review the top 20 semifinalists and narrow them to four finalists. In the fourth round, starting just before the Super Bowl, voting will be opened up worldwide.

The business with the most votes will win the free, professionally produced Super Bowl advertisement.

Here’s a list of local businesses that have made it two the competition’s second round.

• Kando Bakery, in Algonquin, described itself as a “not just for profit” company with a mission to provide work experience for young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities making and selling gourmet granola bars.

• Oscar Mike, in Marengo, is a veteran-owned active lifestyle apparel company founded by former U.S. Marine Noah Currier, a 31-year-old who was paralyzed from the neck down after being in a car accident three days after returning from combat in Iraq. The busi-

ness employs 11 people, eight of whom are veterans. It has previously sought investment through crowd-funding websites such as Kickstarter.com.

• Schwartz Performance, in Woodstock, is a custom-car maker started by Jeff Schwartz in 2004 after he lost his manufacturing manager job. While trying to find a similar job, he modified and built custom cars for years. Eventually, he rented a small shop and started reconstructing old cars with modern components. Schwartz Performance, www.schwartzperformance.com, builds cars that use modern chassis and offer the ride of a luxury car with the handling of a sports car. The company makes the largest line of “bolt in” muscle car chassis with more than 20 models, and its customer base spans 25 countries.

• Zenroommate.com, in Huntley, a hip, social, roommate-matching website started by Crystal Gluszek and Val Petkov. The site just recently launched. Together, the pair bring a combined 30 years of real estate industry experience to the roommate-match-

ing enterprise.

• Grateful Shed Antler Chews, in Algonquin, was started in 1999 and sells antler chews for dogs. The company’s products are available in all 50 U.S. states and 14 other countries, according to its website, antlerchews.com.

• Limitless Innovations Inc., a corporate entity of McHenry-based Metalmaster Roofmaster, launched its first product, the CableHub, in January 2013. The CableHub is an desktop cable organizer that can be personalized.

• VIVI Ginsberg Smith Studios, in Harvard, makes ceramic sculpture and pottery.

It was founded in 2012.

• Characters of Character, in Johnsburg, is a nonprofit organization that uses characters such as Behavior Bear, Doer Duck, Friendship Frog, Healthy Hippo, Manners Monkey, Respectful Rabbit, Responsible Rabbit, Self-Esteem Elephant and Warm-Hearted Walrus to teach civic values to children.

• Chicago Johnny’s, in McHenry, makes giardiniera, a specialty condiment. Josh

Downey started the business using a $600 loan from his brother. His products can be found in 14 local shops and are sold throughout the country on the company’s website, www.chicagojohnnys.com.

• SweepSheet, in Algonquin, publishes a newsletter and website that teaches people how to enter and win corporate sweepstakes. The company’s bi-weekly sweepstakes newsletter provides listings of current promotions. Its website, www.sweepsheet.com, is updated daily with new sweeps.

SweepSheet editor Patti Osterheld started the business as a hobby and turned it into a successful business with 15,000 subscribers.

• JH Power Cleaning Services, in Woodstock, is a residential and commercial power cleaning service that specializes in pressure washing. Owner Josh Harrison started the business earlier this year. Winning the grand prize and seeing his business featured in a Super Bowl commercial would be a “great experience,” but Harrison said his business could benefit more from some of the contest’s cash prizes, which he would use to upgrade his equipment. “I was on unemployment for a year, so didn’t have a lot of money to begin with,” he wrote on the contest’s website.

“I put all my money into this business and have bought all of my equipment on Craigslist so it’s used and it seems like it is always breaking down and falling apart.”

• Simply Appetizers Inc., in Algonquin, makes mild, medium and hot salsas. The company launched a line of tortilla chips last month, said owner Joanne Shields, who said she hopes that the contest will bring more exposure to her business.

• Lausch Construction, in Crystal Lake, is a family construction business that specializes in new construction, spec homes, additions, design and remodeling. It even makes hand-crafted guitars, according to its website, www.lauschconstruction.com.

New owners restore 113-year-old Union tavern

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com UNION – The new owners of Clasen’s Tavern hope to breathe new life into the more than 100-year-old establishment.

When husband and wife team Jim Hennig and Alison Briginshaw took over the tavern in May, they wanted to keep the spirit of the Clasen family – who owned the bar for 91 years – alive.

Right away, they understood the tradition the bar had as a village mainstay. When Hennig briefly took down the exterior sign to have it refinished, he caused a local “uproar.”

“Everybody was so afraid we were changing the name,” he said, laughing. “It’s been 113 years, we’re not changing it.”

In fact, Hennig has gone to great lengths to maintain the atmosphere of the original Clasen family-owned bar.

The space at 17628 Depot St., originally was a general store, but in 1900 William Clasen turned it into a tavern.

“He wanted to play accordion and do a little partying,” Hennig said.

Hennig wanted to bring the music back. So a pool table soon gave way to a restored baby grand piano, circa 1898.

Now, on some weekend nights, local and regional players take to the keys.

not in Union or Marengo,” Hennig said. “You can go play pool anywhere.”

The Clasen’s had the tavern in their family for generations. With input from family members still in the area, Clasen’s Tavern is now decorated with some black and white photographs of patrons past and the family that started it all.

“They’re looking at us, and we’re looking at them,” Briginshaw said of the photos.

Above all, Clasen’s has a rich tradition of being a friendly atmosphere.

In fact, this interview took many pauses as Hennig and Briginshaw stopped to greet their guests, typically by first name.

“When piano players come out they have to be able to play [the theme song to ‘Cheers’] because that’s the kind of bar this is,” Hennig said.

But nothing is more signature to Clasen’s history than a piece of decor that’s hung on the wall since the beginning. A large stuffed moose head that’s sure to have witnessed a lot, but tells no one.

The moose head is said to have been a gift from Union’s undertaker to William Clasen when he opened the bar in 1900.

For 113 years it was a moose without a name, until Hennig and Briginshaw had a naming contest on their opening night. Patrons chose to call him Stanley in a nod to the Blackhawks 2013 championship season.

With a business rooted in history, there’s bound to be spirits of patrons past, and Briginshaw says she can feel them.

“Things just fell into place. Silly things like the stove lit up for the first time in 20 years,” she said. “It’s like the old spirits of Clasen’s came back and are wishing us well.”

“What we do as senior citizens, hopefully, is form a support system. We have neighbors, we have friends, we have family. If I can’t do it, I’ll call to ask,” Carlsen said. “People tend to feel they are entitled, that they can’t do anything for themselves. They want things in front of their door, and I disagree with that.”

Asked whether Rutland Sun City riders would have a bus service by Nov. 30, Carlsen replied: “Speaking for only myself, no.”

The news disheartened Dianne Hansen, a 75-year-old Rutland Sun City resident who has used the Grafton Township bus for the past three years.

Hansen physically can’t drive and uses a walker to get around. She said she uses the bus for doctor visits, grocery shopping and even to make haircut appointments.

“It’s my life saver,” she said.

• AGRITOURISM Continued from page 2 Royal Oak Farms in Harvard is projecting 48,000 to 50,000 visitors this year, after seeing 31,200 visitors pick from the farm’s apple orchard and experience hayrides and other fall activities.

The Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove entertained 52,000 people last year, and the farm is expecting a 10 percent increase over that total for 2013.

All Seasons Orchard in Woodstock has made a conscientious effort to expand its 150acre apple orchard to involve numerous family-fun activities, manager Eddie Hong said.

Since 2010, the orchard has added a corn maze, pumpkin patch, petting zoo and pig races to capitalize on growing demand for the orchard, which opened to the public roughly 15 years ago for apple picking.

“Agritourism brings nostalgia to people that fall is here,” Hong said. “It has gained more popularity. Our fall season has grown every year with added attractions.”

Board OKs Huntley Aldi

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO HUNTLEY – An Elgin developer hopes to break ground later this fall on an expansion to the Regency Square strip mall in Huntley, after village board members approved final designs Oct. 10.

The project adds an Aldi grocery store and a Brunch Cafe to the Regency Square commercial outlet along Route 47, near Kreutzer Road. Interstate Partners, the project’s developer, have said that both retailers will better serve Huntley, which has a need for more dining options.

The Aldi store will complement the larger grocers in town like Jewel and Walmart, said Interstate Partners President Mark Ebacher.

“We think that the Brunch Cafe, combined with Aldi, provides an increased anchor to the overall Regency development and provides alternative options to the community,” Ebacher said. “Overall, we think it’s a great project.”

Interstate Partners’ newest project also provides added options within Regency Square, after the developer constructed a Jimmy John’s, Starbucks and Rookie’s restaurant last year.

But the board’s endorsement of the project did not come without debate. Trustee John Piwko reiterated his issues with the all-brick design of the Aldi store, before casting the lone “no” vote on the project.

Interstate Partners tried to address Piwko concerns earlier this year by changing building evaluations, brick patterns and colors. The developer stuck to the design this week, even after Piwko repeated his concerns in a committee meeting last week.

“I’m really disappointed that the architects couldn’t find anything to appease any of the suggestions that we had set forth,” Piwko said.

The board approved the project, 4-1. Trustee Niko Kanakaris was absent.

In other business, board members kick-started the annual budget planning process by examining recent revenue and debt numbers.

UniCarriers Americas gets new leadership

And Anthony Salgado has manufacturing growth – and more of the well-paying jobs that come with it – on his mind.

Salgado, 43, took over Oct. 1 as president of UniCarriers Americas, the Marengo plant responsible for building forklifts for the company’s Western Hemisphere market and its network of 300 dealerships throughout the Americas. He takes over for Akiri Shiki, who was appointed chief operating officer for parent UniCarriers Corp., based in Tokyo.

UniCarriers assumed the name earlier this year with a merger of forklift manufacturers Nissan Forklift and TCM.

“I’m very pleased. I’ve been given this opportunity, and I take it very seriously,” Salgado Anthony said.

S a l g a d o Salgado graduated in 1988 from McHenry West High School, and was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering. He spent six years in the Navy, and worked for GE before and just after returning to McHenry County.

He started with UniCarriers – then Nissan Forklift – in 2001 as senior manager of quality. Salgado’s responsibilities increased over the years to include manufacturing engineering, warranty support and after-market service, and in 2008 he was promoted to vice president of manufacturing.

In a statement, Shiki called Salgado’s appointment “a clear indication of our confidence in his leadership,” and that the team with Salgado at the helm is “in the best position to truly understand and serve the Americas market.”

“As we continue to focus on successfully growing and expanding our core business as a material handling solutions provider, Mr. Salgado has my full support, as well as that of the board of directors, and I expect that the UniCarriers Americas business will continue to be the benchmark within our global organization,” Shiki said.

years. Salgado has his eyes on the market in Brazil – the nation has the largest economy in Latin America, the second-largest in the Western Hemisphere behind the U.S., and the sixth-largest economy in the world by nominal GDP. UniCarriers Corp. employs 4,500 people worldwide and made $1.9 billion last year.

Salgado said the company’s strategy is to become one the top global manufacturers of forklifts over the next eight years. And that growth, he added, will mean growth, revenue and jobs locally.

“I’m very pleased to be a part of this organization, and all we’ve accomplished, and all we’re giving back to our employees and our community,” Salgado said.

Salgado lives in Richmond with his wife and three children.
