Fundraiser roars through Kane County Motorcycle enthusiasts ride during annual Toy and Food Run for ABATE

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – John Bloch knows that many nonprofit groups organize fundraising drives in and around the Tri-Cities.

But each year few, if any, other drives are quite as loud and boisterous as the one Bloch’s group has organized and run for more than a quarter-century.

“We’ve been doing this for 27 years,” said Bloch, of North Aurora. “It’s a good thing we’ve got going.

“So we’re not going to stop now.”

Sunday, Bloch was among dozens of volunteers helping to organize the DuKane ABATE chapter’s annual Toy and Food Run. DuKane ABATE President Judy Kaenel estimated the event drew almost 2,000 participants.

Most of them rode more than 1,000 motorcycles on a roaring parade route that began at Knucklehead’s Tavern in Elburn and ended at the Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Route 25, south of Batavia’s downtown.

Participants were required to pay an entry fee and to donate a toy and nonperishable food items. The donations were to be distributed to a number of local charities and governmental agencies, including area food pantries, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul, Lutheran Social Services and Aunt Martha’s Youth Service Center in Aurora, among others.

ABATE is a political action group organized to lobby for the interests of motorcyclists.

On the grounds of the VFW, the motorcyclists were treated to a festival atmosphere, with live entertainment, food, beverages and a vendor area, in which select purveyors of motorcycle-related merchandise as well as several nonprofit organizations could seek to drum up support.

Among those in the vendor area were representatives of the Special Olympics and the Sheridan Veterans Memorial organization, a group that has worked since 2007 to raise tens of thousands of dollars to build a monument plaza to honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The memorial is located in

the village of Sheridan in LaSalle County.

Chuck Bergeron, who also serves as Sheridan’s police chief and chief fundraiser for the memorial group, said events such as the Toy and Food Run provide a key source of support for his group, as bikers, he said, are generous toward veteran-related causes.

“Many bikers are veterans themselves, and those that aren’t wanted to be,” Bergeron said. “These kinds of gatherings for us are great. We’re always well received.”

Others jockeying for support from the assembled bikers included such political figures as local state legislators, candidates for Kane County sheriff, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, and candidates for Illinois governor – state Sen. Kirk Dillard and state

He said Sunday’s ride marked his second year participating in the event. He volunteered this year to set up the festival grounds on Saturday.

“People see motorcycles, and they think riders have a bad name,” Markham said.

“But most of the time, you see a large group riding on a weekend, it’s usually a group raising money for someone.”

Bloch, who served as DuKane ABATE’s president last year, said the event is the largest such charitable run staged by his group each year.

“We hope this will pay off,” he said. “And it sounds like it already did.”

Filling Station guilty of liquor license violation Mayor will submit written ruling within seven to 10 days

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Acting in his capacity as liquor commissioner, Mayor Ray Rogina on Monday found The Filling Station guilty of allowing patrons to leave its premises with alcohol Aug. 16.

The finding came after an hourlong, informal hearing in the St. Charles City Council Chambers that included testimony from a city police officer, Filling Station owner Peter Milligan and the employee involved in the incident.

Milligan asked for the hearing during the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission’s meeting last month.

It was the commission’s first hearing on a liquor license violation. In addition to allowing the prosecutor and Milligan – who represented himself – call and cross-ex-

Testimony indicated that a man and a woman left the Filling Station near closing time Aug. 16 with glasses of alcohol concealed on their bodies. A police officer discovered the beverages while he tried to stop the couple for an unrelated reason.

Waitress Lauren Jankowski, who was charged that night to ensure customers didn’t leave with alcohol, admitted she took her eyes off the pair as she worked to dismantle a patio umbrella.

“I took my eyes off them for maybe 10 seconds,” she said, noting the pair abruptly left as she performed that task.

Milligan said in his closing statements that he didn’t argue with the alleged violation.

“I don’t dispute that they walked out with that alcohol,” Milligan said. “I’m not disputing that.”

Comparing the case to shoplifting, Milligan asked the commission whether it was reasonable to fine him for customers leaving the premises with concealed alcohol.

“You can’t search everybody,” he said. “It’s not reasonable.”

The commission discussed the issue in executive session, after which Rogina returned with the guilty finding. He did not announce a penalty but said he would submit a written ruling to Milligan within seven to 10 days.

Housing market studied in St. Charles

A public workshop is set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 20 as part of St. Charles’ participation in a subregional housing plan with Geneva, Batavia and North Aurora.

The plan will be prepared as part of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Homes for a Changing Region project at no cost to the municipalities.

The Homes for a Changing Region project is done in partnership with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Local Technical Assistance program with support from the Metropolitan Planning Council.

Data shared with St. Charles’ Planning and Development Committee and Housing Commission on Monday indicated a potential housing shortfall by 2040.

Demand for rental and owner-occupied housing is projected to increase at all income levels. However, the city’s current capacity to build new housing is limited to 1,659 units, including 959 multi-family housing units, 205 townhouse and 495 single-family homes.

First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato questioned the value of the estimates given the changes in the economy.

Drew Williams-Clark of CMAP said the forecast assumed the economy is going to trend upward with peaks and valleys, just has it has in past decades.

“This is an estimate of potential demand,” Williams-Clark said.

Addressing 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis’ question about infrastructure for the baby boomer generation, Williams-Clark spoke about the importance of versatile housing. He noted elements senior citizens demand, such as less landscaping and walkability, are elements appealing to Millennials.

Kaneville Center to host Bounce Back Benefit KANEVILLE – An event, the Bounce Back Benefit for Becky Nelson is set from 1 to 5 p.m.

Geneva library withholds Cetron report

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Earlier this year, Aires Consulting of Batavia examined the earth and groundwater at the Cetron property at Hamilton and Richards streets to evaluate it for environmental contamination, records show.

But its final report to the Geneva Public Library is being withheld from public view, as library officials refused to release Aires’ environmental studies or its final report. The library paid more than $21,000 for the environmental studies and a final report, records show.

The library had planned on buying the 2.25-acre property as a site for a new building for $2 million, but backed out of the sale last month after the completion of Aires’ environmental assessment.

At the time, board president Esther Steel had said attorneys told officials not to say what the environmental study revealed about what was found on the property.

In a written response in part denying the FOIA re-

quest, Teske cited exemptions for preliminary drafts and notes and for trade secrets and commercial or financial information.

The Chronicle filed a request for review from Illinois Attorney General Public Access Counselors.

Esther Seitz, an attorney who represents Illinois media on open meetings and public records issues, said the library district “should not be entering into secret contracts.”

“An agreement that is expending tax dollars is a

record that needs to be released,” Seitz said. “There is a specific provision in the Freedom of Information Act that states records relating to funds expended need to be released.”

Seitz said the exemption officials cited for preliminary deliberations do not pertain to a final report that led to a final action of the public body.

“They are trying to protect facts … and that is not what that exemption is designed to do,” Seitz said.

“What was found there [on the Cetron property] is not a policy still being deliberated. What was found in there was a fact, and facts are not protected [from release].

Facts should be known and disseminated.”

According to the heavily redacted records, Aires Consulting of Batavia submitted

proposals in April and August to do site assessments of the Cetron property.

One level of assessment, according to its proposal, “is an intrusive investigation which collects soil or groundwater samples to investigate environmental concerns uncovered during the completion.”

Another level of assessment involves “examination of physical evidence for potential environmental impairment,” documents show.

As part of the open records request, the library also disclosed that it paid attorneys nearly $38,000 “to date” in legal fees pertaining to the Cetron property.

Teske and attorney Roger Ritzman said they had no comment on the Chronicle’s challenge to the FOIA denial.

8OBITUARIES MERRILL B. COLBY Born: March 22, 1945 Died: Oct. 10, 2013 STOUGHTON, Wis. – Merrill B. Colby, 68, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013. He was born March 22, 1945, the son of Verdette and Adella Mae Colby.

Merrill excelled as a master carpenter building homes in northern Illinois. He was active in the NAHB and served as president of the Home Builders of Greater Fox Valley.

He brought his skills to Stoughton, Wis., for the past 15 years building and remodeling in the Lake Kegonsa area.

Merrill was an avid boater, enjoyed football, and had a passion for cooking and entertaining.

He is survived by four children, Deana, Merrill II, Brad and Daniel; and three grandchildren, Hayden, Morgan and Kieran.

Shirley was born on Oct. 6, 1928, to Paul and Ruth Mueller in Baltimore, Md. She grew up in St. Charles until her sophomore year then moved to Geneva, where she met Ray Schuett.

They dated until their marriage on June 12, 1948; they had two

children, Lorie Christine and Scott Raymond.

Shirley worked for Geneva Kitchens/Industries and as a programmer for County DUI education and training courses. Shirley and Ray retired in 1992 to Horseshoe Bend, Ark., where they enjoyed boating with family and friends.

Shirley also belonged to the Quilting Club and the Horseshoe Bend Garden Club.

Shirley and Raymond were married for 64 years and are survived by daughter, Lorie Anderson of Minden, Iowa, and son, Scott (Pam) Schuett of Springfield; her grandchildren, Chad (Jessica) Anderson of Harlan, Iowa, Jaime Anderson of St. Paul, Minn., Jennifer Joy (Bob) Schuett Lily of St. Louis, Mo.; stepgrandchildren, Michael La Plant of Carollton, Texas, and Chrissy La Plant of Justin, Texas; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Daniel and Christian of Harlan, Iowa, and Caleb of Justin, Texas; her sister, Betty Schneebeli of Willard, Wis.; brothers, Bob Mueller of Batavia and Ralph Mueller and Bud Mueller of Quincy.

Tim Druffel, concealed-carry firearm instructor from St. Charles of other states must hold an Illinois concealed-carry permit to legally conceal and carry in Illinois.

However, before anyone can apply for such a permit, would-be concealed carriers need to complete 16 hours of training under the tutelage of an instructor registered with the state police, using state-approved curriculum.

Under the law, the training will be divided into two eight-

hour courses. The courses will include firearms safety training, basic marksmanship instruction and other classroom exercises related to the various state and federal laws governing firearms carry and transportation.

Additionally, applicants must complete at least four hours of training on a firearms range, firing a minimum of 30 rounds at varying distances ranging from 5 to 10

years from a silhouette target.

Applicants must demonstrate a proscribed degree of accuracy to pass the course and apply for a concealed-carry permit.

The law allows those who are serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and those who have completed firearms training certified by the state police, such as the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Hunter Safety

Tim Druffel doesn’t fire weapons for a living anymore.

But he did once. And now the former U.S. Marine Corps marksman believes he has identified a new business opportunity to target, as he joins the growing ranks of concealed-carry firearms instructors in Kane County and throughout Illinois.

“Concealed-carry permits are new here to Illinois,” said Druffel, of St. Charles. “So I see a very big swell of demand right out of the gate for people trying to get the hours of training they need to get their permits.

“And I don’t think there will be enough instructors to keep up with the demand – at least not initially.”

Since late August, the Illinois State Police has processed and approved more than 1,000 requests from people in Illinois and other states seeking to become certified concealed-carry firearm instructors in Illinois.

According to the Illinois State Police website, 1,039 instructors have been registered by the agency, and more are being added daily.

Locally, 42 instructors have been certified in Kane County, including 10 in the Tri-Cities.

An additional six instructors have been certified in South Elgin, eight in Elgin and nine in Aurora, with others scattered throughout the rest of Kane County.

More than 1.5 million Illinois residents currently hold valid Firearms Owner Identification cards, giving them the legal right to own firearms in the state. How many of those who will seek to obtain permits to conceal and carry firearms remains to be seen.

The state police estimated about 400,000 people will seek such permits, applications for which the agency expects to begin processing in January.

The permits will carry an application fee of $150 for instate applicants, and $300 for those outside Illinois. The law requires that even residents

According to the ISP website, instructors must be over the age of 21, be qualified to obtain a concealed-carry permit themselves, be a high school graduate and hold a valid firearms instructor certification recognized by the state police.

Druffel, for instance, brings to the table experience as a Marine Corps marksmanship instructor, and years as a competitive shooter.

“I have the qualifications, the background and I can do a competent job at training anyone to handle firearms safely,” Druffel said.

Likewise Hunter Gilmore of St. Charles, said he brings with him more than 25 years of experience as a police officer in DuPage County and Wisconsin, and now works as private investigator and a security consultant at Argonne National Laboratory.

Gilmore said he already has been teaching firearms safety courses in Kane and DuPage counties, and sees the concealed-carry instruction classes as a natural extension of that work.

Gilmore said he knew when his name popped up on the ISP’s list of certified instructors, because his phone began ringing quickly with inquiries from people interested in undergoing the training to obtain their concealed-carry permits.

“People are really interested in this,” Gilmore said.

“They find the information on the state police site, and they want to get moving.”

Gilmore and Druffel said the classes will range from 5 to 30 people and could be taught at a variety of locations, although some instruction will need to take place at a firearms range.

“There’s a lot more to carrying a firearm than just putting it in a holster,” Gilmore said. “A lot of implications that people just don’t think about, but they need to learn.”

Scarecrow Fest’s creator visits St. Charles event Up to 150,000 people come to festival, currently in its 28th year

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Among the thousands of visitors to Scarecrow Fest on Saturday was one woman with a unique connection to the annual event: Jean Becker.

Becker, of Florida, is the former Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director who created Scarecrow Fest, which is now in its 28th year.

“I think it’s incredible that it has the staying power that it has,” she said.

The downtown St. Charles festival has attracted up to 150,000 people in recent years and has received recognition from the American Bus Association and, among other organizations, NBC’s “Today” show.

The festival started with 12 scarecrows, doughnuts and cider, Becker said. She noted its purpose was to attract people to St. Charles and showcase the city.

Amy Egolf, the bureau’s current executive director, has made similar statements about the festival’s purpose, describing it as a marketing

tool for the community.

“The value the fest brings to our community in terms of exposure is next to incalculable,” Egolf has said.

This year’s Scarecrow Fest, which ends Sunday, features a carnival, a petting zoo, live entertainment, children’s activities and scarecrow displays.

While many local groups, businesses and individuals create the scarecrow displays, some out-of-town residents, such as the Kiouressis family, make a special trip to participate.

Formerly of North Aurora, the Kiouressis family lives in Kenosha, Wis., and has twice traveled to St. Charles for the event, Stephanie Kiouressis said Saturday near the family’s “Despicable Me” mechanical display.

The family of five spent many nights in front of the TV preparing for the event, which involved hot gluing more than 5,000 corn kernels, she said.

“It’s a fun thing to do,” Kiouressis said. “We really missed it last year when we didn’t come.”

Becker, meanwhile, hadn’t been to Scarecrow Fest in about 10 years, she said.

But it worked, down to the last detail.

ST. CHARLES – Michele Bauer didn’t have an inkling that her boyfriend, Mark Adrian, was up to something when he took the microphone at the main stage in Lincoln Park during Scarecrow Fest on Saturday. That type of behavior isn’t, as she explained, out of character for him.

She thought he was just going to say they have attended the festival for nine years, she said, but he kept talking.

With the help of two Steel Beam Theatre actors portraying the festival’s mascots Chuck and Char, he asked her to marry him.

She said yes and seemed to be at a loss for words.

“I had no idea,” the Algonquin resident said. “None.”

The proposal, however, had been in the works since summer, said Adrian, a Schaumburg resident. He said he wanted to pop the question during Scarecrow Fest because that’s where they had their first date nine years ago.

Geneva will be flushing fire hydrants for 4 weeks GENEVA – The city of Geneva will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the community for a four-week period, which

started Monday, as part of an ongoing maintenance program.

Hydrants will be flushed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents are urged to limit their water use if possible and refrain from laundering their clothes during this time period to avoid staining from rusty water. Hardware store may be heading to Sugar Grove

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said he regularly hears from residents who would like to see a hardware store in the village.

Ace Hardware wants to open a store by spring at the northwest corner of Galena Boulevard and Capitol Drive near the Jewel shopping center.

Village trustees are set to review the plans today.

“This has been something people have been asking for,” Michels said. “From what I’ve seen of the renderings, the building looks nice. It seems like it is a great fit for the village.”

The store would be in the Sugar Grove Center.

“I’m really excited with what all is going on in the village. We’re also trying to bring a hotel to the village, which is something that would generate traffic for the village’s restaurants and shops.”

He noted that village trustees have approved plans for a new location for American Heartland Bank at Wheeler Road and Route 47.

There are plans to build a 60-unit senior apartment complex just west of the Walgreens store.

“I’m really excited with what all is going on in the village,” Michels said. “We’re also trying to bring a hotel to the village, which is something that would generate traffic for the village’s restaurants and shops.”

“We have been targeting our industrial areas for further enhancements and aesthetic improvements; we feel that this would be a step backward in those efforts,” he said.

Reid-McConnell debt-limit talks clouded by past stumbles

By LAURA LITVAN and KATHLEEN HUNTER Bloomberg News WASHINGTON – The drive to avert a U.S. default hinges on talks between two top Senate leaders who have a mixed record of brokering eleventh-hour agreements and find themselves increasingly at partisan loggerheads.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., continued talks Monday on a deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling before Thursday. Reid

said the two are “closer” to an agreement, though they haven’t reached one yet.

The two lawmakers negotiated a last-minute end to 2011’s debt-limit fight and helped revive the 2008 financial bailout after the House rejected it.

At times, however, others had to step in to complete the deal. McConnell worked with Vice President Biden to close a 2012 agreement that preserved most of the George W. Bush-era tax cuts. During a fight this year over presidential appointments, McConnell said Reid might well “be remembered as the worst

The latest round of talks is complicated by Republicans’ goal of winning the Senate majority in 2014. Democrats now control the chamber with

54 seats, including two independents who caucus with the party.

Reid must seek a deal that satisfies his rank and file, while also protecting the interests of incumbent senators on the ballot from Republican-leaning states including Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina.

Another complication is McConnell’s re-election contest next year. He has a tea party-backed Republican primary challenger, and a local tea party group last week pulled its support for the minority leader.

BATAVIA – Aldermen on Tuesday will continue their discussion on whether to allow a company to install a digital LED billboard on cityowned property along Kirk Road in Batavia.

Lamar Advertising Company wants to install an off-premises billboard in front of a city water storage tank along North Kirk Road. The city’s zoning code currently prohibits off-site billboards.

In July, aldermen directed staff to do more research into the idea. Aldermen will discuss the proposal again at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said he is opposed to changing the zoning code to allow the proposed billboard.

He said the sign could be distracting to motorists.

Burden of cyberdefense THE WASHINGTON POST For the past couple of years, Gen. Keith Alexander, the head of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, has been outspoken in warning that private-sector computer networks, upon which the U.S. economy depends, are vulnerable to intrusion. Gen. Alexander stated repeatedly that such attacks should be met with stronger defenses that would require the sophisticated tools of the government. He argued this case before Congress, which considered legislation that would have eased the way for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector. The legislation made sense, but Congress failed to reach agreement on a bill in the last session.

Now, a new factor has intervened that seems to have further darkened the prospects for legislation: the disclosure by Edward

Snowden, the former government contractor, of wide-ranging telephone and Internet surveillance of Americans by the NSA under Gen. Alexander’s leadership. The revelations of broad NSA surveillance have raised fresh doubts in corporate executive suites about closer collaboration.

The House passed cybersecurity legislation in April, but its chances in the Senate appear to have evaporated. As Congress was balking, President Obama stepped in in February with an executive order that included some modest steps to help companies deal with cyberthreats. But his order does not go as far as what’s needed.

Now, the political ground has shifted, and the U.S. government is not going to come to the rescue any time soon of companies under siege by cyber burglars and bullies. The debate must shift to how data networks can be secured by the companies and organizations that own them.

“I played pretty good,” Cherala said. “I felt I played pretty solid. I missed a few birdie opportunities and a few par putts, but, 76, I’m pretty happy with that.”

Although he didn’t know it at the time, Cherala guaranteed himself a trip to The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington by chipping in from the edge of the green for a birdie on his final hole of the day, the 421-yard, par-4 No. 9.

Cherala hit his approach shot harder than he wanted, overshooting the green. But as almost all of the rest of the North Stars watched, he struck a very precise chip shot that curved to

APERVILLE – St. Charles North senior Raghav Cherala started this golf season as the area’s most heralded player, but spent much of the season feeling a bit disappointed in his play. Monday, however, was a day of disappointment for every Tri-Cities boys golfer except Cherala.

Cherala, a two-time Upstate Eight Conference River Division Player of the Year, was the only local golfer to qualify for this weekend’s Class 3A State meet after shooting a 4-over-par

the left and into the cup.

“I was walking up here and I was like ‘Oh, [no]. This is a tough up-anddown,’ ” Cherala said. “It was on a downhill. So I just picked out a spot, hit it, and it went in. It was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done because I had my entire team right there cheering.”

At the time, the North Stars were hoping that shot might help them qualify for state as a team, but their total of 322 was only good for a seventh-place finish in the 12-team field. After shooting a 41 on the back nine, Samuelson bounced back with a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine.

“The front nine’s a little bit easier on this course, but I also played better and got a couple more putts to fall,” Samuelson said. “The last seven holes I parred out, so I was really happy with that. There’s no set cut for state, but you’ve got to break 80 if you want to get in pretty much, especially in this Sectional. It’s the hardest in the state.”

As if girls golfers didn’t face enough pressure playing through Monday’s AA Rockford Guilford Sectional, checking the Ingersoll Golf Course leaderboard presented further obstacles.

The 76 beside St. Charles North freshman Gianna Furrie’s name and the 335 attached to her team weren’t going away.

It was just a matter of how they stood up as more scores and spectators appeared.

Small print and tension were ultimately no match for the North Stars, who finished third to claim the final qualifying spot at the state meet set for Friday and Saturday at Decatur’s Hickory Point Golf Course. The North Stars edged Barrington (336) and Waubonsie Valley (338) by a combined four strokes.

“It was really nerve-racking, because I knew that I would have made it as an individual if my team hadn’t,” Furrie said, “but thinking of the whole team together, it was really, really nerve-racking.”

Furrie’s 4-over-par score ranked fourth individually.

Classmate Kate Lillie shook off an inconsistent early driver to shoot an 80, while seniors Jessica Grill (88) and Carly Hudon (91) were next.

North Stars coach Chris Patrick again lauded the sustained stability of his youngest players, but also was Gianna Furrie quick to credit Hudon’s coolenough head.

The Sycamore transfer, back in the state field for the first time since her freshman Kate Lillie season, refused to let frustration completely snowball.

Considering North’s margin of victory, that was crucial.

“It was a Jessica Gril rough day,” Hudon said. “We all have those, so it’s just great that I get a second chance. The team held me up and we can now just focus on state and not have to worry about today.”

Athletes from North and St. Charles East entered play with confidence at Ingersoll after competing there Sept. 21 during the Guilford Invitational. The North Stars (339) and Saints (390) finished third and 10th, respectively, in the 20-team event.

For golfers unfamiliar with the straightforward municipal layout, being at ease was made

easier upon entering the pro shop. The homey Gilbey’s Place restaurant attached to the shop served such comfort food as fried egg sandwiches and root beer floats. Among the items offered in the end-of-season 30 percent off golf apparel sale was a wooden wall plaque featuring a heart and the message “Good Morning. Let The Stress Begin.”

A plodding pace of play frustrated the North Stars and Saints at regionals. On Monday, the prevailing notion that sectional rounds speed up given an increasingly skilled field largely remained on par, with only a 45-minute frost delay affecting the start of the round.

The wait to learn of the day’s individual cut also went smoothly. Cashing in her postround meal ticket at Gilbey’s, Saints senior Darby Crane knew without spying the scoreboard that her 92 was a few strokes off; she was correct, as 84 proved the target number.

Kaneland junior Tori Guyton and Burlington Central senior Jenna Kurosky flirted with qualifying after shooting separate 86s. Battling trouble off the tee – she estimated her drives averaged 200 yards, 20 below her average – Kurosky worked to compensate as she again led the Rockets, who registered a 400.

“I felt confident, it’s just that my long game was letting me down a little bit,” said Kurosky,

who was four strokes better than younger sister Josie. “I just wasn’t hitting it as well as I have been throughout the season, so that was a little disappointing.”

Geneva’s Kari Kirl (91) and Mary Clare Novak (95) also competed but did not advance.

Kaneland’s Julia VanGemert carded a 100.

Others missing the cut were East freshmen Kacie Gaffney (95), Reagan Stanton (101) and sophomore Mary Ellen Combs (105), but Crane sees an encouraging future from the program she leaves after a solid career.

“They’ve really taken care of each other, and I think they’re working together, which is nice to see,” Crane said. “One of the girls came out and watched us today that didn’t qualify [Rosemarie Bundy], so there was more of a team aspect this year than we’ve had before.”

North, meanwhile, has sensed something special since the season began thanks to the poise of Haines Middle School products Furrie and Lillie. Furrie, the younger sister of former North Stars standout Ariana, never could see her sister’s state rounds, as she usually had conflicts with her Tri-Cities Soccer Association Premier team.

“Not really sure what to expect,” Furrie said, “but I’m excited.”

She isn’t the only North Star in that club.

Piechota was left to ponder what might have been if he had finished his round stronger.

“Up until the 18th hole, I felt really good about my round,” he said. “My second shot, approach shot, duffed it 30 yards short. Probably the worst shot I’ve hit this season.”

He was unable to save par on the hole, leaving him at 77, instead of 76 or better.

King and McCadam’s efforts helped East to a fifthplace finish with a team total of 317.

“I hit a lot of greens, so I put

myself in a good opportunity to shoot a low score,” King said.

“I just couldn’t get a lot of putts to fall.”

His thoughts were echoed

by McCadam.

“I had 15 pars,” McCadam noted. “I couldn’t get a birdie putt to fall. I obviously wanted that, but I was hitting it well today – hitting greens and two-putting.”

Kyle Jacobs added an 80 for the Saints and Jake Bertke and Brad Riva both came in at 83.

It was a tough day for Geneva. The Vikings finished ninth with a team score of 329. Alex Schreiber shot an 81, Graham

Lillibridge carded an 82, and Nate Desens and Matt Fisher both finished at 83.

“We didn’t play very well,” Geneva coach Bill Koehn said.

“I think there were a lot of nerves out there today.”

The meet marked the end of Koehn’s three-decade tenure as Geneva’s coach.

“I’ve got a lot of friends here and it’s been an interesting day, but time for a change,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the next step – where I’m going to go and what I want to do. I don’t know. Don’t be surprised if I come back in here someplace down the line.”

While Cabel (East) and Rooney (North) are set to wear gray polos with the Breaststroke 4 Hope insignia, their swimmers will be outfitted with pink T-shirts and white caps, also with the cause’s logo.

Breaststroke 4 Hope, in its infant stages after a September 2012 launch, offers pink swimsuits, caps, goggles, bags and T-shirts.

In the same vein, Whildin said Thursday marks the first time the apparel will be used in

a high school meet. He viewed it as a good opportunity to help frequent business partners – Cabel and Rooney also are active in the St. Charles Swim Team club scene – while benefiting breast cancer research.

Online discount coupons for Breaststroke 4 Hope merchandise will be distributed at the meet.

“We’re going to see how it goes,” Whildin said. “It’s something, I think, that has been overlooked in the past in swimming, and I think we can do more of it. Not just with St. Charles, but I think this is a good starting block to see if it takes off and be a good fundraiser for the awareness program.”

Whildin competed for four years at Missouri, and was a Tigers team captain during his junior season. He enjoyed a successful career as an assistant coach after that, moving

on from the Stanford women’s program to the Wisconsin men.

Stanford never finished lower than fifth at nationals during Whildin’s six seasons there.

Now based in Madison, Wis., Whildin switched to “the business side” of swimming in 2012 to spend more time with his family. He has kept his alma mater close at hand, as well, and presented Cabel, his high school coach, to the state swimming and diving coaches assocation Hall of Fame in March.

Both Cabel and Rooney hope Thursday’s event can bring equal luster.

“We wanted to make it more about the community rather than East versus North,” Rooney said.

Burlington Central boys golf makes it to 2A state field KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE FREEPORT – The Burlington Central boys golf team finished in second place Monday at the IHSA Class 2A Freeport Sectional, qualifying for this weekend’s IHSA Boys Golf State Meet at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.

Central’s team score of 317 at Park Hills in Freeport marked the Rockets’ second state berth as a program.

“That must be our lucky course because when we got out in [2008], it was the same course,” Central coach Deb Twenhafel said. “I think that’s our lucky course, I guess, especially for the boys.”

Senior Matt Weber led the Rockets with a 74 despite battling a fever. Austin Niesel (80), Andrew Sherman (81) and Joe Sherman (82) rounded out the team score for the Rockets, who had hoped to win the sectional.

Rockford Boylan prevailed at 310.

“I told the boys, you might not be completely happy with some of your scores, but it’s a new day again,” Twenhafel said.

“We start a new day on Friday.”

Kaneland senior Matt Yonkovich, who was part of the Knights’ team state qualifica-

tion last year, made it as an individual this season, shooting a 78.

Bulldogs’ defense hitting stride The postgame question posed was whether Friday’s 44-7 thrashing of St. Charles North constituted Batavia’s best performance of the season.

Michael Moffatt, a standout receiver/ cornerback for the Bulldogs, would only take part of the bait, saying it was the Bulldogs’ strongest outing defensively, not necessarily overall.

The Bulldogs’ defense allowed no points to the North Stars, who had averaged 44 points a game during their previous three contests.

“Our players fly to the football,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “There’s always 11 guys at the ball, they’re always playing downhill, they’re always checking their keys, they’re always doing a very good job.

“Very, very pleased. Very happy for that defense, [defensive coordinator Matt Holm] and all the work that he puts in, the time with those kids. I know they have a great relationship over there on that side of the ball. That was a really great defensive effort.”

The win puts Batavia on the doorstep of a three-peat in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0 UEC River) can clinch at least a share of the conference title with a win Friday against St. Charles East (5-2, 3-1 UEC River) at Bulldog Stadium. Geneva (4-1 UEC River) is the other team still clinging to title possibilities.

“We’ve got to come out just as strong against St. Charles East,” Moffatt said.

“They’re a very good team, a lot of talent, so we’ve got to continue making improvements and keep playing playoff football.”

North’s cause wasn’t helped Friday when one of its nonconference opponents, Elk Grove, dropped a 43-42 thriller against Hersey. “[At 5-4], points-wise, we’ll be on the low end of the points, but I’ll take my chances,” first-year North coach Rob Pomazak said. “We’ve got to do our job. Larkin is not a pushover. They’re a very good football team, and I’ve seen them play. We’ve got to go 2-0 the rest of the way and then let the football gods decide if we’re worthy to play in the playoffs or not. So the goal still stays there.”

Not forgotten Kaneland senior running back Jesse Balluff has been out since tearing his ACL in Week 3 at Sterling.

Balluff, one of the Knights’ elite players and popular with his teammates, has been around the team part-time since the injury, Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. Fedderly hopes Balluff’s presence is even more consistent as Kaneland nears the playoffs.

“We want him around here all the time,” Fedderly said. “He’s been doing so much rehab that he hasn’t been around a whole lot. But we’re hoping as we go along here that he’ll be here for practices more and that kind of stuff.

He’s always like a coach on the field on the sidelines during the games.”

Batavia took two of the three titles in doubles. Jenny Mizikar and Amelia Cogan teamed up to claim the No. 1 doubles championship with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over East’s Haydyn Jones and Kelsie Roberton.

“I believe that we played

very well together,” Cogan said. “We communicated really well. We were just on this weekend. We played a great tournament.”

Mizikar said she believes the win will give the duo confidence heading into the sectional tournament.

“It definitely helped that we beat them because they’re in our sectional,” she said. “I feel we have a really good chance of doing really well in sectionals.

Hopefully, we get a good draw and can go pretty far and hopefully win it.”

Mizikar is a senior and Cogan a junior, but the Bulldogs will be losing both players at the end of the school year, since Cogan is moving to Boise, Idaho, as her father moves for his job.

Batavia also captured the title at No. 3 doubles with Holley Smorczewski and Julianne Robinson combining to down East’s Jamie Youngberg and Emmy Russell.

GENEVA – Saturday was a great day for the Geneva and Batavia girls tennis teams in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championships, but not quite good enough to overcome the points lead St. Charles East had coming into the tournament.

The Saints used their unbeaten regular season duals record to finish with 67 points, two more than the Bulldogs and three more than the Vikings.

St. Charles North finished a distant fourth with 45 points.

The Saints picked up their only tournament championship at No. 2 doubles, with Alexa and Carly Huskisson teaming up to beat Batavia’s Brook Lefevre and Sydnee Unterberg.

Geneva swept to victories in all three singles finals Saturday. At No. 1 singles, Kirby Einck cruised past Dahlia Ke-

onavongsa of Elgin, 6-1, 6-0.

“I felt like I played my game and I was dominant,” Einck said. “I picked my spots and I hit them right. I just knew when to hit what and I was playing smart. I think it was a really good weekend.”

Einck, a junior, is hoping to continue her strong play at next weekend’s St. Charles East Sectional.

“I think it’s been a great season,” she said. “It’s been my best by far. I’ve only lost twice.

I feel good going into sectionals.”

Einck defeated Nora McClure of Batavia, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the finals. McClure bounced back to claim third place by defeating Steph Sakyi of Streamwood, 6-0, 6-0, and Sarah Church of East, 6-2, 6-1.

But the host North Stars couldn’t keep Cooper Macek from stealing the show.

Macek scored one of the best goals of the boys soccer season on a diving header with 14:08 left in the first half and that was all the Saints needed to clinch a 1-0 win and the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship.

St. Charles East (17-0-4, 5-01 UEC River) will attempt to win the overall UEC title for the second straight year when it travels to Valley Division champion Metea Valley at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Macek’s goal, which was his first of the season, came off a corner kick from Jordan Moore. Running from right to left across the crease, Macek met Moore’s serve head-on near the left post and redirected it past North goalie Billy Larsen, who had no chance on the play.

“It was a great goal,” Macek said. “A diving header against North to win conference, you only dream about stuff like that.”

Macek, a senior defender, had tallied only once before in his varsity career, but East coach Paul Jennison may have had a premonition Macek would score.

“We joked before the game that he was going to get a goal and fantastically he did,” Jennison said. “It was a beautiful corner by Jordan and a great header by Coops. He managed to get himself on the end of it and if you attack the ball, good things will happen, so very proud of him for that.”

Diving headers aren’t something players generally practice because you never know when such an effort will be required, but Macek was prepared.

“Every so often we do [practice it], but playing in the back, headers is what you do every day,” Macek said. “It’s second-nature, so I can’t be afraid of heading the ball.”

Macek also teamed with Kyle McLean, Jacob Sterling, Brandon Villanueva and Kev-

“It was great to see one of the seniors finishing up his high school career here,” Jennison said. “Last time he’s going to play against a local rival on their turf. He had his best game in a Saints shirt today, no doubt about it. He was absolutely fantastic.”

The Saints also dominated up front, unleashing 17 shots and taking 13 corner kicks.

Usually that results in more than one goal, but this time it was left to a defender to dent the net.

“I think it just shows the nature of this team that anybody can score,” Macek said. “We’re not a team of one superstar, one go-to guy. Anybody on this team can step up and score on any given day and I think that really bodes well for our team.”

While pleased with his team’s effort, North coach Eric Willson is getting tired of close losses.

“I think we defended well but we certainly struggled on the offensive end,” Willson said.

“We’ve got to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com AURORA – Fatigued from a three-game semifinal loss to eventual Mizuno Cup champion Plainfield North, St. Charles East girls volleyball players glanced a few feet over and found sudden replenishment Saturday.

Geneva also had lost its gold bracket semifinal, creating a scintillating third-place match that offered a prelude to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division showdown between the Saints and

Vikings in 10 days.

East’s 19-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory came amid lapses from both sides. Players and coaches foresee a heightened atmosphere next time around, although it hardly was lacking on the Great Lakes Center SportCourt.

“We respect Geneva. They are a good team. They have a lot of great young players and stuff,” Saints senior setter Carly Jimenez said. “But we knew that we could compete with them. We took a tough loss, so we just really came into it thinking that we

want to beat them. We want to place as high as we can in the tournament, so that’s what we did.”

Both East (21-5) and Geneva (20-7) have one conference loss, no different from Tri-Cities counterparts St. Charles North and Batavia. It’s possible the Oct. 22 Saints-Vikings match will decide the league champion.

Regardless, the Saints expect a key cog back in the lineup then, as senior middle Mikaela Mosquera is expected to return from a head injury by the end of next week.

BEARS ANALYSIS

Week 6 was a bonus week for the Bears and their fans.

First, there was another win.

Then, a rare Sunday to sit back and catch up on what’s going on around the league.

There were some very entertaining games to watch, particularly the close look we got at the Packers in their 19-17 win over the Ravens and the instant classic between the Patriots and Saints.

I also discovered a surprising trend around the league that got me to thinking about one of the differences between the Bears and other contenders.

What do the Patriots’ Kenbrell Thompkins, New Orleans’ Kenny Stills and Khiry Robinson, Detroit’s Kris Durham and Joseph Fauria and Baltimore’s Tandon Doss all have in common?

They are all second-level prospects and role players who were being targeted and making huge plays at critical moments in games their contending teams were fighting to win.

Thompkins is a 25-year-old undrafted rookie free agent out of Cincinnati while the Saints’ Stills was their fifthround pick out of Oklahoma this year and Robinson is an undrafted rookie free agent out of West Texas A&M. Take Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte away from Jay Cutler, or just limit a few of them, and the Bears offense stalls. Take primary targets away from other contending teams and they use other weapons to beat you.

This is neither a criticism nor an indictment of Phil Emery and his scouting department. I believe, absolutely, you wait at least two years to analyze rookies and none of Emery’s have been here that long, and none of the other players I’ve mentioned were significant free-agent acquisitions.

There is cause to believe Emery picks Jeffery, Kyle Long and Jordan Mills will be the best Bears draft choices since Matt Forte six drafts ago.

It is an indictment of the empty cupboards Emery and Trestman inherited when they arrived, and some evidence of the talent deficit they face when matching up with the best teams in the league.

It is something only time will heal.

No bug spray, no packaged topsoil or plant food, not even a good selection of pots was available. In 1829 Dr. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward of London invented the “Wardian case.” His ferns were dying in London’s smoke-filled air.

Then he noticed that some of the sealed test tubes he was using to germinate seeds also held other seedlings starting to grow. So he created a large glassed-in enclosure to grow his ferns. The Wardian case, named after the doctor, soon became popular not only with botanists, but also with the general public. They were featured in many homes. At first, ferns were the most popular plant to grow in the cases, but scientists and explorers also used them to bring new plants from other continents. It is said that tea and rubber plants made the ocean trip to new countries in the cases, were planted and started new agricultural industries. The Wardian cases used in homes were made of glass and iron. Some sat on a matching table or stand, and some were made to look like small houses. It was the first terrarium - a closed space to let plants grow - and the condensed moisture kept them from drying out. Vintage Wardian cases are not easy to find, but they’re available.

Copies were made, too, and they’re still being made. A case made by the well-known American firm of J.W. Fiske, a Victorian maker of iron furniture and garden fountains, sold last fall for $5,795 at Neal Auction Co. in New Orleans.

A: Jefferson Woodworking Co. was in business in Louisville, Ky., in the late 1910s into at least the early 1920s. It did not make your table. It made table extension rails for various furniture manufacturers.

Still, your set is close to 100 years old and could sell for more than $500 if it’s in excellent condition. *** Q: My Mary Gregory pitcher is titled “A Clear Day for Flying.” But it’s missing some of the painted artwork that should be on the piece.

It has the boy flying a kite, but it’s missing the sky and ground art as well as the artist’s signature.

A: Your pitcher isn’t old. It was made in 2008 by the Fenton Art Glass Co. of Williamstown, W.Va. Fenton was one of several U.S. glassmakers that produced “Mary Gregory” glassware beginning in the late 1950s. Everyone used to think that old Mary Gregory glass was named for an employee at the Sandwich Glass factory in Massachusetts, but researchers have discovered that the style white paintings of children on clear or colored glass - actually originated in Bohemia in the late 1800s. The style continues to be popular, and Fenton made 1,250 limited-edition pitchers like yours in 2008. We have seen the pitcher for sale at prices ranging from $100 to $125.

If the paint on yours has simply worn off, it would sell for less. If it’s an early prototype by Sue Jackson, the Fenton artist who designed the limited editions, it might sell for a little more than a limited edition. ***

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on Julian Assange in ‘Fifth Estate’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Though he’s not instantly recognizable with his hair bleached blond-white in “The Fifth Estate” (which opens Friday), it’s clear that’s Benedict Cumberbatch playing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from the moment he speaks a line of dialogue.

The rich, deep, melodious baritone voice gives him away. Moviegoers have been hearing it a lot in recent years: in “Atonement,” “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and “Star Trek into Darkness,” and TV viewers have been enjoying his modern take on a certain deductive detective in the British series “Sherlock.”

But Cumberbatch, 37, started on the stage, getting great notices for roles in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Hedda Gabler” and, just last year, a production of “Frankenstein” in which he regularly switched between playing Victor Frankenstein and the creature.

Cumberbatch recently spoke about his career and taking on the part of Assange at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ed Symkus: It’s been reported that you tried to meet with Julian Assange before starting, but he didn’t want anything to do with the film and refused. How did you approach the part?

Benedict Cumberbatch: I didn’t want to impersonate him, I wanted to interpret him. There’s an acreage of footage online. A lot of it is formal, of him in presentational mode, of him arguing or being interviewed or talking about particular issues to do with WikiLeaks.

But the film investigates the man in the more private mode of friendship and the working relationship with [his WikiLeaks associate] Daniel Berg, as well as stories of him off camera and very much out of the public eye. I guess that was the harder part.

ES: The film portrays him as being passionate about his work but doesn’t show him in a very flattering light. Any guesses on what he’ll think of the film and your portrayal?

BC: I really don’t want to venture what his reaction’s going to be. I’m not a betting man, but I imagine he won’t

But I’m not a mind reader, even though I tried to get into his mind to a certain degree for a certain period of his life.

I think that we show a man and his idea, and the integrity and sacrifice that he had to pursue to see that through.

I think we show the achievement of WikiLeaks between 2007 and 2010 – electoral reform in Nigeria, the exposure of corruption in the banking systems of Iceland and parts of Western Europe, Tibetan suppression by the Chinese.

And then the massive dump of [American military] information in 2010.

I think there’s a lot to celebrate about his achievements, and the perspective it shows on what he managed to do and how he managed to do it.

ES: Assange is still holed up in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London. How do you think the situation will be resolved?

BC: I don’t know. I’m not a legal expert; I’m an actor. I wouldn’t like to venture what might or should happen.

It’s very complicated, and it has to do with dealings and goings-on behind closed doors.

I don’t have access to any kind of information or perspective that would shine a light on some sort of certain truth about that. What I’d like to see is

the man able to carry on doing his work as the founder of WikiLeaks. Beyond that, due process has to take place in whatever way, shape or form that happens.

ES: Could you speak about making the transition from theater to screen acting?

BC: I genuinely believe that they feed off each other. You can take theatrical moments into cinematic moments, and vice versa. I don’t know if having a theater background changed my approach to film acting in any particular way, but I was really lucky to begin in theater.

You have the wonderful, amazing discovery period of a rehearsal time, which is a luxury in the film world. But most directors on most [film] projects, including this one, do try to carve that out, so you can experience a preparation and a level of experimentation and failing and getting up again and failing, before you’re in front of a camera.

ES: What draws you to a role?

BC: As much as it’s your choice as an actor, variety is a prerogative. That’s kind of my guiding principle when I do get the opportunity to choose – to keep myself guessing, to challenge myself to do things I haven’t done before, and hopefully an audience hasn’t seen before. I’ve been very lucky.

I want to study abroad during college to enhance my experience of the world. Also, because neither of us has ever moved beyond our childhood homes, I think we should both have more exposure about the world beyond.

I will always be committed to Tom but I feel that by prematurely locking ourselves in, we’re setting ourselves up for failure. What should declarer do?

South’s negative double showed exactly four spades. His second-round jump to three notrump was a tad precipitate. He should have made a game-forcing two-heart cue-bid. Then, perhaps, North-South would have reached five clubs, which would have been bulletproof with this layout.

(Even four spades can be made!)

South starts with eight top tricks: four spades, one heart (given trick one), two diamonds and one club. Obviously, numerous more winners are available from the clubs. And if East has the courtesy to hold the king for his overcall, South might take all 13 tricks. However, note what happens if declarer makes the natural-looking play of winning the first trick, playing a spade to dummy’s king, and running the club 10 (or playing low to his jack). West produces the club king, then leads his second heart.

East takes four tricks in that suit for down one.

To make his contract, South must duck (lose) the first trick!

Yes, West may lead his second heart and East can win with his ace, but dummy’s 10 is still a stopper. And East has no entry card.
