EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey It was a cool, dark night. A crisp moon hung in the sky.

And I was ready for some good, old-fashioned terror.

That was the scene Wednesday when I arrived at the Kane County Scaregrounds media preview event.

I met up with Lisa Glavan, promotions coordinator for the Kane County Chronicle, and Jamie Blair, marketing coordinator for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership.

We were all pretty excited to go through the haunted house. Lisa, in particular, was anxious about whether there would be any clowns.

She just can’t stand clowns. I, on the other hand, was ready and pumped for anything the Scaregrounds would throw at us. I get a big kick out of scary stuff, including haunted houses, movies and true-crime stories.

So, before we knew it, we were crossing the threshold into creepy, frightful new territory. Before going too far, we put on 3-D glasses that were provided, so we would be as prepared as possible to take in the horrors that awaited us.

I must say, the inclusion of 3-D in the haunted house made for a wild experience.

The orangey-red paint on the walls really popped, and it was a little disorienting getting through all of the haunted house rooms because the 3-D distorted my vision. Overall, just a really neat effect.

Anyway, what came next for Lisa, Jamie and me was a lot of apprehensive walking, haphazard sprinting, riotous laughing and punctual screaming.

And, last but not least, an entire room full of clowns.

We ran out of that haunted house with our hearts thumping. And I was actually sweating. It was so much fun.

I thought all of the actors did a fantastic job.

“Every year they add new stuff ... and it gets scarier and scarier.”

“You get in there, and you just do it,” said 14-yearold Geneva resident Krissy Miklos of playing a butcher’s victim at the Scaregrounds.

“It’s fun,” she said. “People are really nice.”

she likes seeing how different people react throughout the Scaregrounds experience.

She was in the clown room during the media preview.

“Clowns bring out some people’s fears,” she said.

And, boy, was she right.

Recapping what it was like to go through the haunted house, Lisa noted what was scariest for her.

“The scariest part was everything,” she said, “especially the clowns. I think that it was terrifying.”

Also helping put on the haunted house are director Lori Holm and sound and lighting wiz Bob Kresz.

Both said the Scaregrounds experience has been fun.

“I’ve really taken to the people,” Lori said, noting that she was “thrilled” to be back at the haunted house again for a second year.

“This is my time of year.”

Blue jays have space to stash When you think of nuts – the kind that grow on trees – it’s hard to not think of squirrels.

They are, after all, the most highly touted nut-gatherers in these parts, collecting the trees’ bounty almost as quickly as it falls. In fact, squirrels even will chew off acorn-laden branches to make the harvest easier.

These tendencies are so well known, they’ve been spun off into a common verb.

Have you ever “squirreled away” a little something for a rainy day?

But working just as diligently as squirrels, particularly around oaks, is another animal that’s just as nuts about nuts: the blue jay, Cyanocitta cristata.

If you have a birdfeeder in your yard, you might already have witnessed these birds’ amazing hoarding skills. Digging their bills into the seeds, then tipping their heads back, blue jays at a full feeder look to be stuffing themselves silly.

It’s true, squirrels visit feeders, too, and help themselves to generous quantities of sunflower seeds and corn.

But squirrels are like shoppers in the express lane at Jewel – they get only a few items at a time. Blue jays, in contrast, are like customers at Sam’s Club. They stock up, taking the bird equivalent of a cartload of groceries all in one trip, then stash, or cache, them for use at a later date.

The secret to their hoarding success lies in their ability to put their munchies where their mouth is. Or, to be more accurate, right below where their mouth is.

Blue jays are one of several species of birds gifted with a

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto little anatomical accessory called a gular pouch. This sac, which opens underneath the bird’s tongue, reaches down into the throat and upper esophagus. So equipped, a blue jay can haul away as many as five acorns (three in the pouch, one in the mouth, one at the tip of the bill), a feat that quintuples the efforts of the average squirrel.

It’s not hard to understand, then, how blue jays can be significant dispersers of seeds like acorns. A squirrel may be able to haul one acorn 50 yards, but a blue jay can fly a whole pouchful a mile or more away from the mother oak – which is great news for the tree. Contrary to popular belief, and thanks to blue jays, the acorn can fall far from the tree ... and help perpetuate the species.

While distance is important, so, too, is quantity. Scientists studying blue jay caching behavior observed that 50 jays transported somewhere in the neighborhood of 150,000 acorns in just 28 days – a lot of food, even by Sam’s Club standards. Although the purpose of this behavior, as far as the jay is concerned, is to ensure an adequate food supply for the winter, they usually don’t retrieve every piece they stash. Those seeds that are left in the ground often germinate and grow, creating new trees in new areas. So proficient are their forestry skills, blue jays are credited with helping regenerate oaks and other nut trees after the

Next time you see a blue jay, take a closer look – especially at its throat. Does it appear distended? That’s the gular pouch. Once you’ve seen one, you’ll find they’re easy to pick out.

You’ll likely notice plenty of jays hard at work this fall.

We are in the midst of a mast year, which means trees have produced prodigious quantities of fruit. Acorns are everywhere!

Many will get taken away, and most of these will get eaten. But some will be forgotten.

If conditions are right, they will germinate next spring and grow into oak seedlings.

With more good fortune the seedlings will survive to become saplings, then mature, mighty oaks – all from acorns that were squirreled, er, bluejayed, away.

The film is about the more than 23 million Americans who live in long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions.

Hearts of Hope, along with Ron Onesti of the Arcada, will promote the movie.

Hearts of Hope is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about alcohol and drug abuse, and offering support and advocacy for those addicted and their families.

As to the topic of “The Anonymous People,” Onesti said he has been affected in the past six months, with three friends dying from heroin overdoses.

“I was unaware of their involvement,” Onesti said.

“They were 20 to 35 years old.

I had no idea if they dabbled, or it could have been first time for all three.”

NORTH AURORA – Pedal & Spoke bicycle shop at 157 S. Lincolnway will receive a $6,837 tax increment financing facade grant for parking lot improvements.

Village trustees approved the grant Monday. Pedal & Spoke owner Mike Brackett requested a 50 percent match for the project, estimated to cost $13,675. The project includes the removal and replacement of asphalt, striping and certain landscape features.

The tax increment financing grant program provides financial assistance to commercial property owners to make building, landscaping and signage improvements within the TIF district.

The program offers reimbursement up to 50 percent of

the cost of improving storefronts, building facades or landscaping up to $20,000 and up to $10,000 for sign improvements that bring nonconforming signs into compliance with the village’s sign ordinance.

In addition, $2,500 has been earmarked by the village and an easement has been obtained to install a sidewalk adjacent to Lincolnway.

“Staff believes the sidewalk installation should be deferred until the underlying water main has been replaced and a comprehensive sidewalk plan has been established that would address the continuation of sidewalk to the north and south of the property,” North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth said in a memo to Village President Dale Berman and village trustees.

According to the latest data released by home foreclosure tracking company RealtyTrac, the number of homes in some stage of the foreclosure process in the Tri-Cities and six surrounding ZIP codes increased 124 percent in September from August.

ACDS is a nonprofit organization that provides free dental care to children in the Fox Valley. Since 1954, services have been available to children in kindergarten through 12th grade who do not have access to dental insurance.

RealtyTrac’s data indicated that 202 homes were in foreclosure in September in the

local nine-ZIP code region, which includes the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, and Elburn, Sugar Grove, South Elgin, North Au-

rora, Maple Park and much of Campton Hills.

A year earlier, the region suffered 200 foreclosures.

However, a month earlier, 90 homes were going through foreclosure in and around the Tri-Cities.

In the three primary ZIP codes in the Tri-Cities, foreclosure activity also remained virtually unchanged from a year ago. In the St. Charles 60174, Geneva 60134, and Batavia 60510 ZIP codes, combined, 83 homes were in foreclosure in September, compared to 84 in September 2012.

In August 2013, the Tri-Cities suffered 42 foreclosures.

The increases marked an

end to months of decline in foreclosure activity within the region. From January to August, foreclosures had decreased each month compared to the same period in 2012, often by more than 50 percent.

That had mirrored a national trend in which foreclosure activity nationwide has declined each month for 36 months.

In September, foreclosures declined 27 percent nationally again. However, in Illinois, while foreclosure defaults declined statewide, the number of properties actually being repossessed by lenders surged by 44 percent in the third quarter of the year, RealtyTrac said.

Evelyn was a 1934 graduate of West Chicago High School and attended Moser Business College in Chicago. She was united in marriage to Earl Marschinke on May 18, 1940.

Evelyn worked from 1935 to 1947 at W.L. Stensgoard & Association as a secretary. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Chicago since 1931, where she was a life deacon and secretary from 1963 to 1969. She also worked as a clerk for the city of West Chicago from 1969 until her retirement in July 1985.

Evelyn was the Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of Illinois Grand Representatives Association, International Grand Representatives Association, West Chicago Historical Society, Central DuPage Hospital Auxiliary, Fox Valley Chapter Batavia O.E.S. Lodge #265, Wayne Township Seniors, and served on the Senior Council for the West Chicago Park District. Evelyn enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, Bible study, reading, and especially volunteering for Central DuPage Hospital,

Meals on Wheels and Rotary Club.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Paul (Sandy) Marschinke of St. Charles; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Marschinke of Wayne; grandsons, Dan (Karmah) of San Francisco, Calif., Chris of Elburn and Curtis of Wayne; relatives and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl, in 1962; and son, Wayne, in 2007.

The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Norris-Walen-Segert Funeral Home, 132 Fremont St. (one block north of Washington Street and Main Street), West Chicago. An Eastern Star and funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the funeral home. The Rev. Tim Mitchell will officiate. Interment is at Glen Oak Cemetery in West Chicago.

Police: Man posed as STC East student

ST. CHARLES – Police are continuing their investigation into a Naperville man accused of posing as a St. Charles East High School student on Facebook.

Eric Hakala, 37, of the 1100 block of Iroquois Avenue, Naperville, has been accused of attempting to meet underage girls through the Internet for sexual encounters.

He is charged with indecent solicitation, grooming, having harmful material and possession of child pornography, and remains in DuPage County jail on a $1 million bond.

According to Naperville police, Hakala posed as a 15-year-old East student named “Mike Evans” on Facebook. Hakala used this fake account to have explicit conversations and exchange photos with other Facebook users in the St. Charles and Batavia area, police said.

“Batavia police were contacted, and they have identified several local teenage victims,” according to a news release from the Naperville Police Department.

The Naperville Police Department, together with the Batavia and Oswego police

departments and the U.S. Marshals Service, conducted a seven-month investigation into Hakala’s alleged activities.

“We’re trying to identify additional victims,” said Naperville Police Sgt. Lou Cammiso, the department’s public information officer.

Hakala’s attorney, Vince Solano, said he hasn’t seen the charges against his client.

“We will see how it shakes out and see what kind of evidence they have,” Solano said Friday. “It is an unfortunate arrest.”

Naperville police are asking parents in the Batavia, St. Charles and Oswego area to sit with their children and go over their Facebook friends and the cellphone application KIK for the “Mike Evans” account in their friends and/or contact list.

Parents should report the activity to the Naperville Police Department High Technology Crimes Unit at 630305-5384 or the Batavia Police Department Investigations Unit at 630-454-2500.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A failure to compromise To the Editor: That the U.S. Congress is dysfunctional and incapable of accomplishing much of anything today should be intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer. We appear to be two divided countries still masquerading as one semi-united body. It is as though two distinct cultures and value systems are colliding, the result being that a war is being fought with neither side willing to make peace. The media, of course, remind us of this state of affairs daily and tends to enhance the sense of dread that so many of us feel.

In lieu of the bitterness and hatred that seem so prevalent today, why can’t Congress relearn the art of compromise? Why can’t business and government be viewed not as adversaries, but as allies working together to make this country worthy of its reputation (albeit a declining one) as the greatest democracy in the world? Neither private enterprise alone nor government alone can solve all the problems facing the country. But by working together, much can be accomplished.

As long as Democrats and Republicans continue pointing fingers at each other, the longer the chaos will continue. Congress should not be viewed separately as Democrats and Republicans, but collectively as one body, and evaluated in the same way. Maybe if members of Congress could get together, the rest of the country could do likewise. If members of Congress got along with each other, the American people might better understand and appreciate their own differences. Extremists in and outside of Congress are largely responsible for the darkness, fear and uncertainty that so many feel today.

Ideology and extremism have been terribly detrimental to the country. Put simply, extremism is a losing proposition. It is long overdue for members of Congress to acknowledge the disastrous effects of extremism, and to clearly demonstrate, by action, that their reason for existence is public service, not self-service. Our patience is wearing thin!

Persistent push for Animal Control administrator is not smooth It seems likely that Robert Sauceda will become the next administrator of Kane County Animal Control.

After all, he has some heavy hitters backing him.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen supports Sauceda and has since the beginning of the year, when he initially tried to appoint Sauceda to the post.

Instead, because of differing viewpoints among County Board members at that time, Lauzen appointed Sauceda to billing manager of Animal Control, a role in which Sauceda has seen success – not bad at all for a person whose prior experience included work as an insurance agent and sales manager.

Then there’s Barb Jeffers, executive director of the

Kane County Health Department, which has oversight of Animal Control.

Jeffers supports Sauceda in his administrator quest.

And she believes the County Board should give him a chance to head the department.

And maybe the County Board should.

But it’s hard to blame any members of the board who might have reservations about the appointment.

That’s because, as has been reported, Sauceda supported Lauzen in his run for the chairman position. And Lauzen ran for that position on an anti-cronyism platform.

Not to mention the fact that Sauceda did not have much – if any – experience directly related to Animal Control to begin with.

And then there’s the most recent matter of Lauzen bringing the administrator issue in front of the County Board during the waning minutes of its meeting Tuesday.

Lauzen said he wanted to steer clear of a few members of the board “playing politics” with the appointment.

But doesn’t that – in and of itself – sound like playing politics?

The matter had not even gone through the Public Health Committee. Granted, state law does not require such an appointment to go through committee, but – given the history of the issue – that might have gone a long way toward mollifying uneasy board members.

appointment of Sauceda until November.

Lauzen chastised the board for not taking the recommendation of Jeffers, questioning how it could be that they would not take the counsel of a department leader.

And that is a good point.

Department heads often know what they oversee better than anyone else.

But, we ask, how should that philosophy apply to the situation in the Kane County Coroner’s Office, where Coroner Rob Russell has requested an increase in funding for his department?

In that case – and at the same Tuesday meeting – Lauzen and the county’s chief financial officer opted in the tentative 2014 budget to give Russell less than he asked

for, calling it a “reasonable compromise.”

Russell said he never agreed to such a deal and that the tentative budget figure would leave his department underfunded. He had said the extra money would go toward hiring two new deputies to reduce the need for overtime and on-call pay for after hours work.

It’s important for Lauzen to keep a close eye on county spending. Open communication on that issue might lead to a more satisfying middle ground for all parties.

At the end of the day, it seems certain that Kane County will soon get a new Animal Control director. And Sauceda could very well be the right man for the job.

But the road to get there hasn’t been pretty.

is doing, the best way to shut the government down and make them all understand that there is something to talk about is that we, the people, practice some civil disobedience and withhold our taxes.

If we withhold our taxes, the government would really shut down, and they would feel the pain because there would be no money. I don’t really care if we don’t fund a good portion of the money because the majority of what the government does now is take our money to give to somebody else. It’s enforced charity, instead of taking care of our own business. Why don’t we, the citizens, the taxpayers, defund the government. Withhold your taxes.

Time for the real Republicans

The only time the servants of the people recognize the American citizens is when they look down to see who they are stepping on to get up on the next rung of the ladder. That is from the library board to the president of the USA. Not one of them will answer an email or a letter from the citizens.

Randy Hultgren, our U.S. representative, is one of the minority of extremists in the House holding our country hostage to get what they couldn’t get through due process. There is nothing conservative about his conduct, and it does not serve the people of his district.

It is time for real Republicans to make their voices heard, and ask Randy to serve the people instead of the tea party caucus.

It’s always a battle between us and them, and I think there should be more civility in the conversation and more statesmanship, more respect of the other side. The attitude and demeanors seem to be so disparaging and disrespectful and rude. I understand why it must be so difficult to sit down and deal with each other.

There could be more leadership at the top.

How you create wealth The debate in the country about the size of government and taxes is misinformed and is being driven by ideological rhetoric. We have a system that creates the possibility to accumulate wealth. Our system, or civil society, allows this because we have infrastructure, like roads, bridges, water and sewers, institutions, like public education and a judicial system, and public safety and security, like police, fire protection and the military. All of these things are necessary in order to produce wealth. These things are paid for by public investment, in other words, taxes. I have lived in the third world, where these things are lacking because there is very little tax revenue.

Therefore, it is very difficult for people to create wealth.

If our approach to solving our economic problems continues to be reducing government and cutting spending, we will be less effective in our ability to produce wealth. Cutting is a

Who at Batavia High School finds pleasure in firing longtime, loyal workers? Where is the school board?

Yes, everything does come down to money. The churches cry that they need more money.

The schools cry that they need more money. So, the person says it’s a little more expensive, so let him pay for it. Let the parents who have kids in these schools pay for more. We never had any kids, so we’re paying for that? I can’t see it. I can see why people are moving out of St. Charles. In the five years I’ve been here, I’m on my third different neighbor. They come and go. So, parents with high school students, pay up a little more, if it’s only money.

Greed It’s just plain and simple greed with no respect. Houses are selling? No, they’re not. House values are up? No, they’re not.

The new tax levy is out. Schools need more money. They spiked all the retiring teachers’ pay.

And, in the same paper, there are [16] pages of tax delinquent properties. The American family is being taxed to death. Plain and simple greed.

Hardee’s was here, a long time ago There’s an article in the Chronicle on Oct. 9 about the Hardee’s moving to Burger King.

It says that it would be the first Hardee’s restaurant in Kane

County and one of the first in the Chicago area. I disagree.

There was a Hardee’s on Route 38 in St. Charles in the 1980s.

I used to get my lunch there every day. I know that there were Hardee’s around here. I am looking forward to it. Their food is good.

A home for the park district?

Why doesn’t Batavia use the expansive former Siemens property at the southwest corner of McKee and Van Nortwick as a new location for a Batavia Park District facility. There is so much empty land there. The Batavia Park District could have a venue with a large indoor pool, possibly used by the high school, several athletic courts, and rooms for various types of classes and meetings. Parking would be plentiful. And it is in a residential area in the middle of town, which would encourage all residents to use it, coming from both the east and the west side. Anybody have any ideas about this?

Not money well spent I’m reading the Chronicle of Tuesday, Oct. 8, regarding Batavia’s Wilson Street headed toward the home stretch. It says that the city engineer, and this is not a quote, the lights will be timed to provide better traffic flow for the 20,000 cars that use Wilson Street every day. The following is a quote, “The computerized system will adjust itself as the day goes on,” he said. “It won’t eliminate traffic congestion, but will help manage it.” I wish he’d explain how it is going to manage traffic congestion. Will it be stop and go, or sit in traffic and wait? How is it going to manage it better? This whole thing with the downtown reconstruction is a debacle. Putting in bumpouts and everything has only further narrowed the lanes of traffic going through downtown Batavia, taking out an extra lane in front of McDonald’s and the businesses there. And it seems to me that money spent on this project could have been better spent on other projects.

Thankfully, the Affordable [Care Act], aka Obamacare, went into effect. ... As with many laws, it is not perfect.

However, millions of Americans will quickly find out that its benefits far outweigh any of its shortcomings, which are likely to be corrected in the near future if given a fair chance.

Insurance companies, many in the medical profession, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and our congressmen will continue to voice their opposition to protect their interests. It is time for them to change their mindset and start supporting the rest of us. This is a good law, along the lines of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

For them to tell you how many children you can have? Good luck in finding a good affordable act insurance premium. You’re going to pay. And I’m wondering, for the people who never had health insurance, do you honestly believe that they will pay these prices? I doubt it.

BALES OF FUN Scarecrow Fest offers weekend of activities

T. CHARLES – Elevenyear-old Robbie Dzierzanowski spent much of Friday along the Fox River, helping Scarecrow Fest attendees make their very own scarecrows.

“It’s tiring. It’s warm. It makes you really thirsty,” the Boy Scout said.

But, he added, “It’s fun because you get to help people.”

Members of Boy Scout Troop 60 will continue to help

families build scarecrows today and Sunday in two downtown St. Charles locations: along First Street near the river and along the river walk near the Municipal Center.

The festival also features a carnival, a petting zoo, live entertainment and, among other elements, scarecrow displays.

Scarecrow Fest is produced by the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau. Ravenswood Event Center provided operational support.

ship with Windy Acres Farm that brought pumpkin carving to the event Friday.

Of Ravenswood, Egolf said, “They really understand the need for uniqueness.”

Her four children, along with two others, worked together to make a scarecrow on Friday after enjoying the rides.

“This was a break for us,” said Smith, snapping pictures of the kids and their finished product.

BATAVIA – Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke doesn’t know whether he will dress as The Mayor of Munchkinland for Halloween, “The Simpsons” Mayor Joe Quimby or Sir Topham Hatt, from the television show “Thomas & Friends.”

Those who participate in the Batavia Arts Council’s Halloween Hooligans fundraiser can vote to determine what costumes Schielke and other dignitaries should wear for Halloween.

Funds raised go toward providing scholarships and offering grants to artists and for art projects.

Schielke said he doesn’t have a preference on what costume he wears.

“I’m here to do my part to help Batavia and its philan-

thropic institutions,” he said.

The fire station will replace Station No. 3 on Gilbert Street in South Elgin, which was always intended to be a temporary facility, fire district officials said. The new station also will be named Station No. 3.

It is located on the former Wise-Hamlin Plastics factory property at Carl Lee Road and Route 25 – a location Fire Chief Greg Benson described as “strategic.” He said it is equidistant from Stearns and Red Gate roads, giving the district good access to the west side.

“It’s a great spot,” Board of Trustees President Jim Gaffney said.

He and Benson also said the new station is in an area once served by the Fox River Estates Fire Department.

“We’re basically bringing a fire station back to where it started,” Gaffney said.

Bill Miceli, a former firefighter with the Fox River Estates Fire Department, at-

tended the ceremony wearing his shirt from the old fire department. The 79-year-old said he never thought a fire station would return to the area.

“It’s a miracle,” he said.

Pam Turriff, a nearby resident, said the community is looking forward to the addition.

“We’re thrilled to have them in the neighborhood,” she said. “We look forward to working together.”

The fire district is repurposing an existing structure for its apparatus bay and is building living quarters at the site, Benson said. The facility will have a room accessible to the community, he said, adding space also will be available to members of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to be finished by Feb. 1, Gaffney said.

He said the project will cost about $2.2 million, which includes acquisition of the property.

The fire district also has bought property at Crane and Bolcum roads in St. Charles Township for Station No. 2.

Gaffney said the district is about five to seven years away from pursing that.

Batavia blasts St. Charles North

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North drove into the red zone in the final minute of the first half Friday against Batavia, desperate for a touchdown to keep contact with the Bulldogs.

Instead, Bulldogs senior Michael Moffatt made the play of the night, ripping the ball from North receiver Jon Merriweather and racing 95 yards upfield for a touchdown just a few feet from his exultant teammates on the sideline with 8 seconds to go before halftime.

“I heard Anthony Thielk coming down my side, and I slowed down a little bit because I knew he was going to make a big block for me, which he did,” Moffatt said after Batavia’s 44-7 Upstate Eight Conference River road win. “He laid that kid out, which set up a free path to the end zone, which was huge for us.”

Moffatt’s interception return yielded a 25-0 Bulldogs lead at halftime, and made a comeback difficult to fathom for a ground game-oriented North offense.

It punctuated a first half in which Batavia’s patented offensive versatility was on full display. Quarterback Micah Coffey completed passes to six different receivers and running back Anthony Scaccia was up to his usual tricks, scoring two rushing touchdowns to go with 81 first-half rushing yards.

The win keeps Batavia (6-1, 4-0 UEC River) alone in first place while the North Stars (3-4, 2-3 UEC River) suffered a potentially crippling loss to their postseason hopes under first-year coach Rob Pomazak.

Aside from the interception, Moffatt was at the heart of another huge momentum-swinger in the opening half.

On fourth-and-16 from the North 35 in the first quarter, Moffatt was credited with a 34-yard reception from Coffey down to the North Stars’ 1. The ball popped out, but officials ruled Moffatt

North’s defense then held for three straight plays before Scaccia scored from the 2 on a fourth-down sweep.

The two-point try failed, but Batavia led, 12-0, late in the first quarter.

“They made the call that they saw,” Pomazak said of Moffatt’s catch. “I might have saw things differently.”

“I definitely knew I had possession of it,” Moffatt said. “I pulled it down and had it against my chest for a while, and then when it popped out is when I reached out and tried to score. … It was fourth down and I knew I had to pull that in for my team because at that point we were only up six, so that was huge for us.”

Given the way the game unfolded, one controversial call quickly became a footnote.

“They took advantage of us on the seams, and we worked on that all week,” Pomazak said. “Offensively we couldn’t really get much going. You fall in the hole, turn the ball over, short field

position, their defense is putting up points at half. It’s killer. You can’t do it. You’re not going to win very many games.”

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron forecast his defense would be a force now that several key players are back healthy, and that proved to be the case Friday.

The Bulldogs’ defense allowed no points; North’s Nick Drawant scored on an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring North within 38-7 after Kat Stutesman’s PAT. North standout running back Evan Kurtz was contained to 71 yards on 15 rushes.

“It was great,” Batavia linebacker Jake Hlava said of the Bulldogs’ defensive showing. “You could defi-

nitely tell all sides – D-line, linebackers, secondary, all together it was just a really great unit.”

Thielk gave Batavia its second pick-6 interception of the night late in the third quarter, picking off backup North QB Nathan Didier, who relieved starter Erik Miller earlier in the quarter.

The downside of the night for Batavia was a knee injury to junior offensive guard Mitch Krusz. Krusz was on crutches after the game, and Piron expressed concern about the prognosis.

“We’re deep [on the offensive line], that’s one of the strengths of our team, but Mitchell is our best player on the O-line, I think,” Piron said. “I think he’s an all-conference football player. It’s tough to have a kid like that go down like that.”

Saints rally, playoff eligible

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East surged to five touchdowns in a 9:22 span Friday, securing a win against Streamwood and playoff eligibility.

So what if the Saints erupted in the third quarter, 24 minutes after their initial expectation?

Trailing the winless Sabres at halftime, East recovered for a 42-27 victory by effectively stealing Streamwood’s strategy to open the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game: Capitalize on mistakes and always be confident.

“Deep down, we knew that we were going to pull it out,” Saints senior linebacker Jon Finn said. “Yeah, it doesn’t look good when they’re scoring on us like that, and sometimes you get down, but we just stuck together as a team and the seniors really got fired up.”

Missing several regulars to injury, East (5-2, 3-1 UEC River) scored 35 unanswered third-quarter points to subdue Streamwood (0-7, 0-4) and its upstart bid.

A series of penalties and turnovers helped the Sabres stick around, but the Saints started the long exhaling process after grabbing a 42-14 lead after three quarters.

Mitch Munroe started the burst by returning the second half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

ergy after that,” Munroe said.

“We all were like, ‘Hey, we can’t play like we did in the first half. We have to play well.’ ” The Saints grabbed their first lead on a 5-yard scoring pass from Jimmy Mitchell 2:35 later and didn’t look back, swelling their advantage behind a Streamwood fumble and a blocked punt.

Per IHSA online archives, East has surrendered seven or fewer points eight times and won all 14 meetings against Streamwood since 1996. The schools did not play from 2001 to 2004.

Friday’s game returned to familiar tracks much later than the Saints and their senior night crowd anticipated. Mistakes marred a first half after which East trailed, 14-7, as the opening kickoff rolled out of bounds and the Saints defense was called for encroachment before one second even ticked off the clock.

Mitchell threw two interceptions in his first four pass attempts and was relieved for classmate Mitch Dupuis for a series in the second quarter. Dupuis later shuttled into the game in short yardage situations. Mitchell passed for three touchdowns while Dupuis ran for two.

Regardless of who was under center, East sputtered at the start except for its lone scoring drive, a two-play push that culminated with Mitchell’s 66-yard pass to Brannon Barry. Barry snagged a short pass and raced up the left sideline after making a quick series of moves.

It seemingly was supposed to be that effortless the whole night. Streamwood was coming off a 55-6 loss at St. Charles North, its fourth defeat of at least 42 points this season.

East visits conference-leading Batavia next week knowing any extended lull isn’t advised.

“Sloppy is an understatement,” Saints coach Mike Fields said. “Obviously, we’ll take it and we’re happy with the win, but we’ve got to play a heck of a lot better. We’ve got the Bulldogs next week, and I don’t know if we were thinking past them or no school today. I could come up with all the excuses in the world, all I know is we came out flat in the first half, and Streamwood came out, they had heart and passion.

We didn’t. So we need to fix a lot of things, and we will.”

That was the last time St. Francis would score on the

night. Marmion junior Jordan Glasgow found the end zone on a 1-yard run with 9:21 left in the third quarter that made it 20-14 St. Francis.

After forcing a St. Francis punt, Marmion went 60 yards in 11 plays as quarterback Brock Krueger found Eberth on a 5-yard touchdown grab.

The Cadets missed an opportunity to take the lead as the extra point was blocked, leaving the score tied at 20.

Marmion stripped the ball from Butler on St. Francis’ next possession, taking over at the Spartans’ 40-yard line with 5:08 to go.

Five plays later, Krueger plowed in for a 1-yard TD run.

Again, Marmion missed the extra point, making it 26-20.

With no timeouts, St. Francis took to the air on its final possession. Facing a fourth-and 21, Prociuk’s pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage to seal the Marmion win.

The game took a scary turn early in the third quarter as St. Francis defensive back Steven Fassnacht was carted off the field and taken to a hospital after a jarring hit from Marmion running back Josh Meyers.

As of press time, there was no word on Fassnacht’s condition.

AURORA – Coming into Friday night’s critical matchup with Marmion, the St. Francis football team had hopes of getting back into strong playoff position with a victory against the Cadets.

For a half, the Spartans looked like they were on their way.

A strong second half from Marmion’s defense and a pair of Cadets scores – one rushing and one passing – allowed Marmion to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit and clinch a playoff spot with a 26-20, comeback win.

Marmion (6-1, 4-1 Suburban Christian Conference Blue), fresh off a convincing road win over Aurora Christian, got down early against a St. Francis squad reeling from three consecutive defeats.

Playing for their playoff lives, the Spartans (3-4, 1-4) got a pair of first half rushing touchdowns from James Butler – including a 63-yard burst – that helped the Spartans open up a 20-7 halftime lead.

Butler, who is playing in his lone season for St. Francis after transferring from Bartlett, added a 1-yard plunge early in the second quarter that put the Spartans up, 14-0.

Marmion looked like it had seized back momentum after Tyler Eberth picked off St. Francis quarterback Zach Prociuk and returned the ball 95 yards for a touchdown to cut the Spartans’ lead to 14-7.

Geneva romps to 42-point first half in win

The Vikings were unstoppable in the first half of their 42-20 victory over the host Maroons, making the second half moot.

Geneva (5-2, 4-1 UEC River) scored touchdowns on its first six possessions of the game to take a 42-0 halftime lead.

“We keep getting better,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “It’s mental for these guys it seems like. If they keep believing and finish the season the right way, good things can happen.”

Junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina scored the first two touchdowns with his feet and threw for three more.

“We were in a groove,”

Santacaterina said. “We took what they gave us. The line did real well, gave us time, made some nice blocks. Ben Baker stepped in for Loudon [Vollbrecht], who was hurt.

He did a nice job.”

Pace Temple, Max Woodworth and Kyle Brown all caught touchdown passes for the Vikings.

The Vikings rolled Daniel Santacaterina up 352 yards of offense in the opening half. Santacaterina, who did not play in the second half because of the lopsided score, passed for 131 yards and ran for 69.

Liam Burns rushed for 99 yards in the first two quarters on nine carries and T.J. Miller picked up 49 yards on four first-half attempts.

“The run game was doing what it needed to do, as always,” Santacaterina said.

half. Stephen Kemp and Billy Douds recovered fumbles for the Vikings, and Joe Boenzi intercepted Elgin quarterback Ryan Sitter.

A fumble by the Vikings on their own 5-yard line at the start of the third quarter finally gave Elgin an opportunity to get on the board on a 2-yard run by Sitter.

Sitter, who threw for 170 yards, added a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.

Northern Illinois senior women’s golfer Jenny Niemiec played an abbreviated summer tournament schedule after her mother, Sue, died from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, in June. The former St. Charles East multisport standout has coped in part through golf, a frequent activity with her older brother, Chris, and father, Ed. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Niemiec tells Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about her life the past few months and her long-lasting connection with her alma mater. The following is an edited transcript:

How did the fall golf season go?

We actually had our last tournament this past week.

We start our offseason in two weeks, so we’re just practicing now. … [It was] not as good as I would have hoped.

Still trying to figure some stuff out, but the spring is the most important season, so hopefully I get everything figured out by then.

What was your summer tournament situation before that?

The Illinois [Women’s] Open for me went really well.

I shot 78-72-79, I made the cut, so it was really good, especially because I didn’t play in that many tournaments this summer just because of family circumstances. But just to get back out there and play that well kind of gave me a boost in confidence before I went back to school.

You mentioned family circumstances. How has everyone been handling your mom’s passing?

How often do you and Chris talk golf?

Talk about transferring to Northern [from South Carolina in the 2011-12 school year].

BC eliminated from postseason RICHMOND – The Burlington Central football team was eliminated from playoff contention with a 14-13 overtime loss at Big Northern Conference East rival Richmond-Burton on Friday.

With the game tied, 7-all, in the closing minutes of regulation, BC (2-5, 2-3 BNC East) missed a 30-yard field goal with 1:29 to play.

My dad and my brother both caddied for me at the Illinois Open. My brother did the first day, my dad did the second, and then my brother did the last day again.

the decision that I wanted to come back home and be closer to my mom. I figured why not play golf while I’m here. I didn’t know anybody, really, on the team, just a few girls from when I was growing up who I might have had a tournament against them.

She was on the golf team when I was at East. She actually transferred from Arizona State [to support Niemiec], and she’s my best friend, so we actually ended up living together. So I have her here, which is really nice just to have somebody you’re close with.

Is Rich Harvest Farms [NIU’s home course in Sugar Grove] everything people say?

everything about Rich Harvest is unbelievable. [Owner and NIU alum Jerry Rich] has done so much for our program. It’s so cool to actually call that your home course and be able to play it whenever you want.

When’s the last time you took grounders at shortstop or swung a bat?

I play catch from time to time, but honestly, probably two, three years. I miss softball a lot. … I actually went to two of the [East postseason games last season]. I still keep in contact with coach [Kelly] Barnett. Horan now. I talk to her at least one or two times every couple months, so it’s nice. And they did awesome [as Class 4A state runners-up in 2013]. … I still keep in touch with my golf coach, Rod Osborne. A lot of the teachers, when I go to games once in awhile to watch one of my friend’s sisters or something. I don’t know, i was really close with a lot of people just because I was involved in sports there, so it was always nice, because I feel like St. Charles East was like a family.

Knights pull away from Foxes

Kaneland (7-0, 3-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) did not open the game with the efficiency that has characterized its offense this season. Quarterback Drew David threw an interception on the Knights’ first drive and struggled to establish the typically fastpaced, no-huddle offense for much of the first half.

The Knights’ defense, led by linebackers Gary Koehring and Cole Carlson and defensive back Isaac Swithers, erased any memory of the team’s slow start, picking off Yorkville quarterback Cameron Van Boekel three times and not allowing the Foxes (43, 1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) to sustain any long drives.

Carlson was impressed with the defense’s effort as a whole and praised its ability to play two solid halves of football.

“They were a good team and they beat Morris and whatever, but everybody, everybody played hard tonight,” Carlson said. “When the offense was down, the defense picked them up, and vice versa.”

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly admitted that the win was not completely cohesive, but he was very happy with the defensive effort.

“The defense played great the whole game, I thought,” Fedderly said. “We obviously had some miscues and didn’t execute the way we wanted to.

We weren’t really happy with how we played overall in the first half. They played a good first half. We went in and just said we gotta shore up things on our side.”

“I remember getting recruited and seeing a lot of fans at places and being like.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois is one of only four Football Bowl Subdivision teams to have played only one home game this season.

The Huskies have played in two Big Ten venues, had a long trip to Idaho and a short flight to Ohio for the Mid-American Conference opener at Kent State.

Playing at Huskie Stadium might almost seem weird at this point. There won’t be any packing, charter buses or airports.

No. 23 Northern Illinois is expecting a packed house today at Huskie Stadium when the Huskies take on 1-5 Akron, which is winless in MAC play.

The school officially announced today’s game as a sellout, which would mark the second straight game the place has been full. The official attendance for the home opener against Eastern Illinois was 23,595.

“I’m really excited about it, I really am,” Northern Illi-

nois football coach Rod Carey said. “I know with the atmosphere we had in that first game, I know our players are so excited to be here because we have a home-field advantage and we’re going to need that on Saturday.”

A win this afternoon would be NIU’s 23rd consecutive victory at Huskie Stadium, which would be a MAC record.

The win over EIU was the only victory during the streak that was played in front of a sellout crowd, as NIU’s last sellout was against Maryland in 2003.

NIU defensive end Jason Meehan called the crowd a 12th man.

“They share the same emotion with you. When you’re doing well, they’re up and they’re pumping you up to do well,” he said. “When the other team’s up, they kind of make it tougher for them to play. It helps us a lot.”

Geneva JV volleyball wins Batavia tourney

Joanna Conner of Decatur, formerly of Geneva, was among six people in 2013 induction class for the Millikin University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Conner was inducted during the Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner during Millikin’s homecoming weekend on Oct. 4.

Conner, a Class of 2006 grad, was inducted for her outstanding career in women’s basketball for the Big Blue. Conner was a starter on Millikin’s 2004-05 national championship team, averaging 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds a game that year.

After scoring 13 points and nine rebounds in the semifinal and 14 points with 15 rebounds and six assists in the championship game, Conner was named the Final Four Most Valuable Player.

Conner ranks as Millikin’s fourth all-time leading rebounder with 796 boards to her credit, and is MU’s No. 14 all-time scorer with 1,132 points.

Conner earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary education/physical education K-12 at Millikin.

She returned to Millikin in 2011 as assistant women’s basketball coach and strength and conditioning coach.

Friend loses battle with cancer; memory lives on Saying I lost one of my best friends last week. Laura Crawford, beloved teacher, children’s book author, daughter, sister, aunt and funny, feisty friend to so many, died last week after a five-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Only 46, she wasn’t ready to die.

“I don’t have time for this. It’s not supposed to be this way,” she volunteered a few weeks before she passed, when we discussed the possibility of her death. “I’ve got more books to write, more kids to teach. What time is it?”

She asked, as she glanced at the clock on the wall of her hospital room. “Right now I’d be telling little Johnny (name changed) to … ” she reflected, her voice trailing off.

A reading specialist and literacy coach at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School, Laura wasn’t well enough to return to her classroom this fall. But oh, how she wanted to. Teachers are a special breed, but this one didn’t stop working with “her kids” when the bell rang.

At her wake, her dad, Jim Crawford, recalled a story about a child Laura tutored over the summer, whose mother’s checks she quietly refused to cash. That doesn’t surprise me at all. An educator for 20 years, she’s the kind of teacher that students came back to thank many years later when they graduated from high school. Sometimes Laura and her former students even met for lunch. She didn’t stop loving and teaching them just because they left her classroom.

But the kids she most adored were the children of her dear sisters, Linda Fogg and Maureen Walrath. Laura was like a second mom to Madilynn, Lauren and Brooke Walrath; and Jack and Riley Fogg. They were the light of her life and she talked about them constantly. When Maddie played soccer (she played on my daughter’s team, which her dad, George, helped to coach) Laura

and I got to watch a few games together. These days Maddie is a rising star on the cross-country team at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia and Lauren plays soccer.

Laura was so proud of their efforts.

I happened to be at the hospital one afternoon when the girls arrived to tell their aunt about their latest endeavors. Lauren was looking forward to another soccer game that weekend and Maddie shared that she had just done well at a cross country meet.

“And what do you do?” Laura asked, turning her attention to me. Realizing that she was momentarily confused, I played along.

“Oh, well, I don’t run, Laura.

Bad things happen when I run,” I said, laughing, but Laura knew that.

When she was well, we walked. Along the Fox River on the bike path, and, later, when that became too taxing, around my neighborhood. We walked and we talked. About everything.

She was thoughtful, generous and strong. Boy, was she strong. Writing teachers often say, “Write what you know,” and she did.

A longtime member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and a network representative for the Geneva network – which I joined when we met eight years ago – she’d already published seven nonfiction picture books, including “Benjamin Franklin from A to

Z,” “Postcards from Chicago” and “In Arctic Waters” – my daughter’s favorite.

She’d also written manuscripts about strong women with pivotal roles in our country’s early years. Laura knew all about strength. In fact, she never did give up her fight against cancer.

Miss Maddie must come by her endurance quite naturally, as her devoted aunt, who wanted so badly to stay and watch her and the others grow up, fought to outrun cancer right up until the very moment it took her.

An inspiring cheerleader to the end, Laura never gave up working on her own and others’ “book stuff,” either.

For example, when I described how much I enjoyed swimming with the sea turtles during my family’s recent trip to Hawaii, she said, “There’s a book there.”

“You’re amazing, Laura. Here you are, stuck in this bed, and you’re still lighting a fire under me!”

“I see books everywhere,” she whispered.

“You’ll be happy to know that Holly and I were just at the library and picked up a pile of books about sea turtles,” I said.

She smiled.

She loved research. She’d also be happy to know that I also already returned those books, and before their due date, too.

(I’m pretty sure “Wanted” posters bearing our names are hanging in libraries throughout the county.)

I also mentioned our award-winning writer friend Lori’s latest manuscript.

“You know how some of her stories are about animals?” I asked. “So yeah, there’s a farm and these turkeys, and, you

know, something about acorns.

Acorn pie. Yeah, that’s it,” I added, shaking my head. I’d just read the dang thing the night before but for the life of me, weary and worried, I just couldn’t conjure it.

“Well, just take my word for it,” I said, exasperated, “It’s AWESOME.” Laura smiled.

“Cute,” she said, closing her eyes against the fatigue. “We could get together here [in the hospital] and [critique],” she immediately suggested, no doubt wanting to help poor Lori with her apparently messed-up book.

We never did get to do that.

The night she died, I called Southwest to change a flight I’d had planned so I wouldn’t miss her funeral. Someone named “Laura” took the call and didn’t charge me for changing the flight.

Several hours after the funeral, when everyone finally stood up to get off the plane, I realized that out of the hundreds of seats available, I’d picked the one directly behind a guy wearing a jersey bearing the name “Crawford.”

Laura’s still with us, I think, and will live on in her books and in our memories. In an effort to keep them alive for her nieces and nephew, Laura’s family is compiling a book of notes written by those who will never forget her.

Since some of Laura’s books were written in postcard format, the Geneva Public Library is helping with this effort by making postcards available at the Youth Services desk through Oct. 18, which will be forwarded to the family. People can also send feedback about her books or recollections of Laura, a.k.a. “Miss Crawford,” to linda.crawford@ comcast.net.

goodbye is for the birds LEARNING TO GROW Suzanne Thorne Shortened daylight hours and cooler temperatures signal that winter is on its way.

This also means that some of our feathered friends will start their annual migration to warmer climates, and it’s time to say goodbye.

While I love all the birds that I’ve observed in my garden this season, I am particularly sad to see the hummingbirds leave the area.

This was my first year to closely observe them at a feeder, and they have been delightful.

I placed a feeder where their antics could be easily watched from the family-room window and backyard deck. The most common species in our area is the ruby-throated hummingbird – Archilochus colubris.

I learned they are carnivores and depend on soft-bodied insects and spiders as their primary food source. The sugar water I was providing in the feeder only fueled their insect-catching activities. I made sure to keep the feeder clean and the sugar water replenished every few days using the recommended ratio of 4:1 water to white granulated sugar. This blend approximates the amount of sucrose available in flowers favored by hummingbirds.

As cooler temperatures and shorter days trigger their instinct to migrate south to their winter home in Central America I am seeing fewer and fewer birds at the feeder.

Hummingbirds leave the area when they have fattened up enough to survive the journey. Some will skirt the Gulf of Mexico and follow the coastline; others will cross the Gulf for the 18-22 hour flight across water.

Late August and early September is the peak of the migration. By mid-September the few hummingbirds seen at our feeders are not the same individuals we’ve seen throughout the summer.

These birds are the latest migrants on their way south from areas further north.

So, don’t take down your feeder until freezing becomes a problem. Migrating birds remember food sources and will stop again.

Even though we say goodbye for now, we can always look forward to the hummingbirds return next spring.

I am going to get more feeders to space around my yard to avoid territorial disputes, and I am going to plant flowers that the hummingbirds favor: bright geraniums, trumpet vine and salvia, to name a few.

I will then be prepared to welcome my little friends again in April and May.

‘A.C.O.D’ is quirky divorce comedy

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now Divorce is typically more nasty than funny, but that doesn’t stop first-time director Stu Zicherman from crafting a comedy about the lingering effects of his parents’ divorce on a seemingly well-adjusted grown man in “A.C.O.D.” – Adult Children of Divorce.

Pulling double duty, Zicherman, a child of divorce himself, co-wrote the film with Needham’s Ben Karlin (“The Daily Show”), and the duo benefit from a richly entertaining ensemble headed

by Adam Scott.

He’s joined by a murderer’s row of comedic actors, including Jane Lynch (“Glee”), Amy Poehler (Scott’s co-star on “Parks and Recreation”), Clark Duke (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), Catherine O’Hara (“Home Alone”) and Richard Jenkins, an Oscar-nominee for “The Visitor.”

After a title card informs that one in two marriages will fail, the film flashes back to the ninth birthday of Scott’s

Carter. While he’s blowing out candles, his parents (Jenkins and O’Hara) are at each other’s throats, launching colorful insult after insult. A close-up of the boy’s dejected face is all Zicherman needs to put the ball in play. Fast forward 20 years, and his parents can’t stand to be in the same room, let alone set their differences aside to plan their youngest son’s (Duke) wedding.

Enter Carter, who has been the family peacemaker, fixer and go-between since childhood, learning to effectively juggle both parents as a survival skill.

In fact, Mom and Dad’s split didn’t hinder him from becoming a successful restaurateur or scoring an amazing girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, with not much to do.) Carter is stable and unaffected – just ask him.

As the wedding planning heats up, Carter begins to unravel (naturally), and he seeks refuge on the couch of his former childhood therapist Dr. Judith (Lynch). Only he discovers she’s not really a shrink, but a researcher who used Carter as a subject in her

best-selling book – in its 14th printing – about children of divorce.

Dysfunctional family cliches ensue, culminating in Carter’s predictable third-act meltdown. The likability of Scott and his castmates keep the flimsy story intact, despite Zicherman and Karlin’s best efforts to demoralize them with underwritten roles.

That includes Jessica Alba’s Michelle, another of the subjects in Dr. Judith’s books, and Carter’s step-parents played by Ken Howard, all but forgotten in the scrum, and Poehler, who sees a terrific opportunity to play against type squandered by the filmmakers. Like the rest of the cast, she should sue for abandonment.

“A.C.O.D.” has its funny moments, but with a cast of this caliber, you expect more hilarity than you get.

College-bound teen fears leaving baby blanket Dear Abby: I am 19, and because of some traumatic events in my past, I’m afraid of the dark and sleep with my baby blanket. I went to counseling about it, but eventually stopped because it didn’t help.

I haven’t had any real problems as a result of the issue because I live at home and my boyfriend has been supportive in accommodating my needs when I stay with him. Plus, I don’t need my blanket when I’m with him.

My concern is about the upcoming semester. I will have to move to the main campus of my university in order to continue my education. This means I’ll be living in a shared dorm.

While I have reached the point where I can go without my blanket for a few nights, any longer and it starts to get to me.

I don’t want to have problems when I move to the main campus because I’m already going to stand out for moving in the middle of the year, but I don’t know how to

Dear Abby: My vegetarian, won’t-harm-a-fly husband owns two handguns. They were bought before I met him. He knows I don’t approve. I have always felt strongly about not raising children in a home where guns are kept. His argument for having them is that he distrusts our government. He claims the guns will protect our

family if there is ever an uprising or a riot.

While I support his desire to protect our family, I’m frightened by the much more immediate possibility of an accident happening, or the children finding them and harming themselves or someone else.

I have tried to talk him into either getting rid of the guns or storing them elsewhere. Every time I raise the subject, it turns into an argument and he insists he won’t get rid of them. If not, then perhaps you should consider raising your children with a man who isn’t already married to his guns.

Researchers look for ways to slow ravages of ALS Dear Doctor K: Former Massachusetts governor Paul Cellucci recently died from complications of ALS. Can you tell me more about this disease?

Dear Reader: ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

You may know it as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who suffered from it.

There are many different kinds of brain cells. Some do our thinking, some move our muscles (when the ones that think tell them to), and other brain cells do other things (such as see and hear). ALS primarily causes a slow degeneration of the nerve cells that control muscle movements. As a result, people with ALS gradually lose the ability to control their muscles.

In people with ALS, the capacity to think and remember things is affected only in fairly subtle ways, and may not be affected at all. ALS does not usually cause dementia.

ALS generally strikes patients between the ages of 50 and 70. We don’t know what causes ALS. As a result, there is no way to prevent it. Some cases appear to be inherited.

The weakness and wasting (atrophy) of the muscles involves the arms and legs, the breathing muscles, and the muscles of the throat and tongue.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The weakness worsens over time. Eventually, people with ALS are trapped in their bodies, but completely alert. They understand what’s going on around them, including people speaking to them. But when the disease progresses to the point where it withers the muscles of their throat and tongue, they cannot answer.

As the disease progresses, a person may experience: • Muscle twitching, cramps, stiffness, and muscles that tire easily; • Slowed speech that becomes progressively harder to understand; • Difficulty breathing and swallowing; choking; • Weight loss because of muscle breakdown and poor nutrition caused by problems swallowing; • Changes in the way the person walks. Eventually, loss of the ability to walk.

There is no cure for ALS. People with the disease live an average of three to five years after symptoms begin. (The famous British physicist Stephen Hawking has a disease similar

to ALS and has lived with it for 50 years. But apparently he does not have ALS.) Riluzole (Rilutek) is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ALS. It can prolong survival in some people. Medications may help to manage symptoms of ALS; pain medications and muscle relaxants may help with painful muscle tightness.

Mechanical devices can make self-care easier for people with ALS. Examples include dressing aids and special utensils for eating. A cane or walker may help patients who have difficulty walking.

Patients can consider using a mechanical respirator if they become unable to breathe on their own. Artificial ventilation can help some patients survive for years, but many patients choose not to be kept alive under these conditions.

Researchers are making progress in understanding the causes of ALS and in finding treatments that help. Hopefully, the pace of new discovery will speed up and a cure will be found for this terrible disease.

Girl offends date with comment about tattoo Dr. Wallace: I met this guy at my cousin’s house. He is my cousin’s best friend. He asked me out and I said yes, so the following weekend we went to the movies.

He was nice, but sort of weird. He invited me to go to a beach party the following Saturday and, again, I said yes.

That was the first time I saw his tattoos. On one leg, he had a “busty” nude woman. His tattoo made him look stupid in my eyes, but all of his macho friends thought it was cool.

That night when he took me home, I told him that his nude woman tattoo looked stupid. This made him angry and he swore at me, hopped into his car, and then sped away.

My cousin said that this guy is really mad at me and that I needed to take a course in proper etiquette. Having a nude woman tattooed on his leg proved to me that he was stupid and that’s what I told him.

Do I need a course in etiquette or was I just being honest? – Nameless, Naples, Fla. Dear Nameless: You were being honest, but you were also being rude. At the very least, you might have gotten the message across by using another adjective rather than “stupid.”

Forget this guy as a possible future boyfriend.

The two of you were not meant for each other.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 years old and have been taking piano lessons ever since I was 4. I do enjoy playing and even taking my lessons. I hope someday I can earn a living playing the piano. A concert pianist would be a great goal.

My parents are very proud of my playing.

They were both born in Korea, where music is very important in

Dear Nameless: Your parents are very proud of your musical talent and naturally want you to share it with their friends and acquaintances. But they also need to consider your feelings about the matter. It would be disastrous if the forced performances wound up making you dislike playing the piano. There are times when you should just be a normal 14-yearold boy, not a musical prodigy.

Show my answer to Mom and Dad and see if something can be worked out where you perform occasionally and then for only a short time. You should always end your home performance with the guests clamoring for more!

At the bridge table, surprisingly often one defender can steer his partner in the right direction. The problem is that some defenders prefer to backseat drive, ignoring their partners’ signals and heading down their own side roads – and letting defeatable contracts make.

In this example deal, how should the defenders play to beat four hearts?

After East opened one diamond, that South hand was strong enough for a takeout double followed by a heart bid.

But South reasonably decided that his short spades made an initial double dangerous. (Yes, it was unlikely to backfire, but one heart would be the majority expert choice these days.) Then, when North raised hearts, South had an easy jump to game.

First, West must lead the diamond four, his partner’s bid suit. East wins with his queen and cashes the diamond ace.

West discards the club two, denying interest in that suit.

East takes the diamond king, West pitching the spade three to say that he does not have the spade ace.

What should East do now?

If West does not want a blacksuit shift, there is only one play left – lead another diamond. And as you can see, this is the only way to defeat the contract because it promotes West’s heart queen as a trick.
