‘Chicago Fire’ films crash in Union

BY JAMI KUNZER jkunzer@shawmedia.com UNION – Just beyond the gates of the Illinois Railway Museum, crews from the NBC hit drama “Chicago Fire” prepared to tackle one of the series’ biggest accident scenes yet.

A train derailed and crashed into a warehouse, crumpling several cars and rolling a tanker.

And yes, there was fire.

Using about 150 extras recruited from the area, crews began filming Friday. Filming was expected to continue through Thursday at the museum, 7000 Olson Road, Union.

Union might be a distance from Chicago, and its farm fields and country roads much less urban, but it served as an ideal setting for the scene, those involved said.

“This is one of the most amazing resources,” said Bob Hudgins, location manager for the “Chicago Fire” filming.

“It’s a rare entity.”

With its capacity and equipment, the museum and its campus have the ability to serve as a locale for basically any time period, he said.

When film crews are looking for trains to use, they often call upon Union, Museum Director Nick Kallas said.

Those involved said the

scene was likely one of the most elaborate to be filmed for television in that amount of time.

The scene is scheduled to air as part of this season’s seventh episode of “Chicago Fire,” which is based on the firefighters and drama surrounding the fictitious Chicago Firehouse 51.

Dressed in their fire and paramedic gear, the stars of the show chatted and awaited their scenes while the extras were led as a group to their staging area. Many tried to catch a glimpse of their favorite characters from the series.

“He’s looking good,” Kara Repsys of Crystal Lake said as she glanced over at Taylor Kinney, who plays “Lt. Kelly Severide” in the series. Kinney had sat down and propped himself against a tree to relax.

All of the series’ regulars were nearby.

A fan of the show, Repsys brought her 7-year-old daughter, Lizzy, to be an extra. Lizzy became a passenger on the train.

“It’s been my dream to be on TV,” she said. “I like the camera.”

Her mother brought along homework for Lizzy to work on in between filming, having to temporarily pull her out of second grade at South Elementary School in Crystal Lake.

“I think as a parent you want to fulfill your child’s dream,” she said. “She talks about wanting to be on the Disney Channel. At 7 years old, this is something she’ll always remember. ... It’s neat this is in our backyard.”

Others came for similar reasons, to experience something unique that they might never get to experience again.

Some were “walking wounded,” while others were without makeup.

Fans of the show Peg and Steve Wienckowski of Cary said they thought, “Why not?” when the casting call came out. Their children grown and Steve self-employed while Peg works part time, they took time off from work to participate.

“We just have our dog with her ankles crossed waiting for us at home,” Peg Wienckowski said. “This is something different, kind of cool.”

“Chicago Fire” crews had arrived earlier in the week to prepare the setting.

They added a makeshift front to one of the museum’s storage buildings, which provided the “Industrial park” feel they were looking to create. A car of the train was embedded in the front of the building, while others were skidded through a muddy, grassy field.

Modified only slightly, the

train involved was a former Northwestern commuter train built in 1954 and in service until the early 1990s.

“These particular cars, people used to ride to work in every day,” Kallas said. “They’re trying to get that same effect, people riding to work and an accident occurs.”

He believed the scene was trying to somewhat re-create the 2008 train collision in Chatsworth, Calif., in which a commuter train collided with a freight train. That collision resulted in 25 deaths, but Kallas didn’t think the “Chicago Fire” scene involved fatalities.

He welcomed the film crews, just as he has done in the past with seven or eight other projects, including 1992’s “A League of Their Own” and most recently “Transformers 4.” Crews for “Transformers 4,” expected to be released next year, were on set at the museum for two days a couple of weeks ago. The museum also served as the setting for parts of the pilot for the new ABC series “Betrayal.”

“I think the really good thing is the publicity and notoriety it brings to the county,” Kallas said.

“While McHenry County is known as a great tourist attraction … we’re also a cultural community. We’re a part of that scene.”

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – The Marengo Park District is contemplating closing its pool to help save a budget drowning in outstanding debt, a result, officials said, of a 2003 expansion gone financially awry.

The pool has operated at an annual $30,000 deficit dating to 2002, Business Director Heather Shepard said. It also needs about $60,000 in repairs to replace an antiquated filtration system being run by 14 filters designed for residential pools.

Shepard said the district does not have room in its budget to pay for the repairs, although officials are pursuing a grant to cover the expense.

The pool represents one of the last remaining amenities for the park district, which has reduced its staff and shuttered its daycare operation in recent years because of past financial problems.

“Where we are at financially, how do you justify keeping the pool open?”

Shepard said.

If the pool does close, Marengo residents would be left without a public swimming option this coming summer. Residents’ nearest options would be Woodstock or Huntley.

A Park District Board committee plans to discuss the pool closure during a meeting Oct. 2. The board would look to make a final decision on the pool by year’s end, Shepard said.

Despite ending last year with an $11,700 surplus, the district has been hamstrung by nearly $1.96 million in outstanding debt tied to a 2003 expansion of its Indian Oaks facility.

Voters at the time rejected a referendum that would have financed the expansion.

But district board members proceeded anyway.

They issued bonds that were structured to escalate each year based on the assumption that Marengo and the district’s tax base would grow.

The assumption failed, since Marengo and the district have seen a decline in population growth over the past five years, Shepard said.

In the past four years alone, the district’s tax revenues have dropped from $600,000 to $493,000 annually, she said.

The combination of escalating debt and declining revenue has put the district in a precarious position. Board members last year did manage to restructure $1.15 million in debt to level the district’s annual payments, the bulk of which are set to be retired in 2020.

The district already has

cut staff to three full-time employees and nine parttime employees. Demand for fitness and recreation programs has increased, but the added revenue falls short of covering the district’s debt obligations, Shepard said.

The $11,700 surplus in the district’s $694,000 operating budget was an improvement from past years, when the district would struggle to pay employees and bills on time, Shepard said.

“The financial picture is looking better than where we were two years ago,” she said. “My biggest concern is how to make our bond payment every year without borrowing. … Until that bond is paid in full, I think we are going to struggle.”

The district’s last remaining cost-cutting idea is the pool, since it continues to lose money, but board members still are debating whether to proceed, board President Scott McCann said.

On Wednesday, members

will begin a more detailed look at the pool’s operating expenses and start discussions on a “plan of action,” he said.

Members also may look to the Marengo Park District Foundation for a fundraising campaign that would target donors to help cover the pool’s expenses.

“The verdict is still out,” McCann said.

Officials also have entertained the idea of a referendum that would ask voters in the areas surrounding Marengo to contribute property-tax dollars to the park district. But officials are unsure whether the referendum would have a chance at the polls.

The board has discussed the issue, but members have not begun identifying specific election dates to pose a potential referendum question, Shepard said.

“I just don’t know how realistic it is for people to vote to raise their taxes,” she said.

Man dies after being Centegra delays Huntley start run over in Huntley

and SHAWN SHINNEMAN sshinneman@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – A man died in the morning Oct. 1 after being run over by a skid steer in the McHenry County Conservation District’s Pleasant Valley Conservation Area, according to the Marengo Fire Protection District.

Marco O. Aguilar, 59, of the 1400 block of North Green Meadows Boulevard in Streamwood, was working inside a maintenance building when he was struck by a vehicle being used to prep and grade the floor, according to a news release from McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski.

Conservation police and emergency crews were called to 14308 Hemmingsen Road in Huntley about 10 a.m. for a report of a man who was injured, according to a news release.

Crews arrived and found a man unresponsive and seriously injured at the south storage shop.

An outside contractor was installing a concrete floor when a work-related accident involving two employees occurred, the fire department news release stated.

Aguilar was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:48 a.m. An autopsy revealed that he suffered multiple injuries to the head, chest, abdomen and bones, according to the coroner.

The man was run over by a skid steer, which is similar to a Bobcat, Fire Chief Bob Bradbury said.

The two men involved had worked together for more than 25 years, he said.

An investigation by the McHenry County Conservation Police, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is ongoing.

HUNTLEY – The ongoing lawsuit over Centegra Health System’s $233 million Huntley hospital has delayed the much-anticipated October groundbreaking until this winter, giving Centegra’s competitors a short-term victory in their battle to halt the project.

But the victory might not last long. Centegra will head back to Will County on Nov. 12 to hear Judge Bobbi Petrungaro’s final decision on the lawsuit initiated by competitors Mercy Health System, Advocate Health Care and Sherman Health.

Centegra Chief Executive Mike Eesley and General Counsel Aaron Shepley both expressed confidence that the Huntley hospital project would withstand the legal challenge.

With a final court date now known, Centegra pushed back its Oct. 23 groundbreaking to late December or early January as a precaution – months after the lawsuit would be put to rest, Eesley said.

“We didn’t want to put the groundbreaking in front of anybody when we were unable to literally break ground,” Eesley said.

Throughout this year, Centegra has unveiled design plans for its 128-bed acute care hospital, as they made their way through the majority of Huntley’s planning process.

Centegra officials have maintained that the ongoing lawsuit with the health system’s competitors would not deter them from constructing the multimillion-dollar hospital.

Eesley told the Northwest Herald that the groundbreaking delay is not a sign that Centegra is feeling uneasy about the project.

“Absolutely not. We have known all along that [the lawsuit] is more of a nuisance for us. It’s an issue of our competing health systems trying to slow us down,” Eesley said.

“We all anticipated that this would be a moot issue at the end of the day. But we also have to time it accordingly,” he said. “There is no use exciting the community about breaking ground when we

know there are going to be further delays.”

The groundbreaking would be a symbolic next step for Centegra, which has tried since 2010 to construct its third McHenry County hospital within the growing area of Huntley.

Centegra withstood two rejections from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board before the state panel on health care reversed course and approved the project in July 2012.

Centegra’s competitors filed suit seeking an appeal of the decision.

Late last month, the health and facilities board answered Petrungaro’s request for further explanation on its reversal. The state board detailed how Centegra met the majority of the board’s criteria for approval.

Shepley said the board’s response overwhelmingly expressed the benefits of a hospital in Huntley. Administrative bodies such as the health facilities board often have “broad discretion” on decisions regarding community hospitals, he said.

Huntley close to adding grocery store, restaurant

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Residents are close to having another grocer and dining option, after Huntley Village Board members Oct. 3 generally supported the latest design that would expand Regency Square.

Elgin-based developer Interstate Partners has been working through the village’s planning process all year on an expansion to the Regency Square strip mall along Route 47 that would add an Aldi grocery store and a Brunch Cafe outlet.

But Trustee John Piwko still had issues with the allbrick design of the proposed Aldi store, even after Interstate Partners changed exterior elevations and columns to spruce up the building’s look.

Piwko expressed similar concerns this summer.

Interstate Partners said it will work with Aldi and vil-

lage staff on changing the design before the board meets Oct. 17 to give the proposed commercial development final approval.

“We think Aldi and Brunch Cafe are answering two components of unmet demand for Huntley itself and for residents who live further to the west and south,” said Interstate Partners President Mark Ebacher.

The developer will locate its newest commercial development on two lots directly south from the Jimmy John’s, Little Caesars, Starbucks and Rookie’s restaurant in Regency Square. Interstate Partners added all four stores to the strip mall last year.

Brunch Cafe and a second, undetermined tenant would be in a 6,560-square-foot building. Outdoor patio space would be created on the north end of the building to allow for outdoor dining at the breakfast and lunch cafe.

Brunch Cafe already operates in McHenry, Fox River Grove and Roselle. Aldi would occupy an adjacent 17,014-square-foot brick building. Interstate Partners hopes to start construction later this fall.

In other business, trustees gave tentative support for Huntley Community Radio’s plan to build a low-power FM transmission antenna on top of a water tower within Huntley’s Wing Pointe subdivision.

The station, launched online late last year by Sun City residents, has been preparing a request with the Federal Communication Commission for a license to broadcast on residents’ FM dials.

The tentative agreement on an antenna with the village allows the radio station to proceed with its broadcast license application.

The FCC’s filing window for low-power FM stations lasts from Oct. 15 to 29.

Plastic dumpster lids that contain the poignant smell of rotting trash and keeps rodents and bugs at bay were flimsy, breaking often at the hinge, the company heard from customers.

Impact Plastics consequently developed the Double Impact “Wedge” Lid, a long piece of plastic that has a 20 percent thicker hinge line than its predecessor. It accomplished what the Huntley company wanted – a longer-lasting, durable product.

But the wedge lid’s release on Sept. 12 was merely the culmination of a two-year process involving trial and error, innovation, a new facility and a specialty oven that Lemajeur said couldn’t be achieved without a committed investment to research and development.

“We won’t slow down on R&D,” Lemajeur said. “I totally understand why people would, but we are a different type of company. We are trying to be innovators.”

Impact Plastics primarily needed the technology to make the thicker lid. The industrial ovens available on the market wouldn’t heat the plastic properly, since the new lid would be thinner on one end and much thicker near the hinge, Lemajeur said.

The inadequate heating would often warp the plastic.

Impact Plastics in turn developed plans and partnered with a Carol Stream company to design and test a specialty oven capable of heating the plastic at different temperatures.

cated its operation from Elgin to a bigger facility in Huntley.

“We innovate it and make it better,” Lemajeur said.

“That’s what we do on every single product we touch.”

Impact Plastics’ commitment to research and development comes as more companies throughout the Chicago region diminish their investment to research and development.

The seven-county Chicago region lost nearly half of its pri-

vate research and development jobs in the past decade, as investment declined, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning reported earlier this year.

The region consistently ranked as the country’s second-largest research hub, next to New York, from 1970 to 2000, as the region’s research and development spending tripled.

But throughout the past decade the region’s research and development output dropped by nearly $2 billion to a total of $4.1 billion, CMAP found.

The findings did not sur-

prise Lemajeur, who said that companies shedding costs typically first look at research.

“The easiest thing to cut is R&D. You could make a ‘me, too’ product or compete on price,” he said. “For me, that is not the future. There is always someone who can go cheaper.

For me, the future is value.”

Pam Cumpata, president of the McHenry County Economic Development Corp., sees a similar dedication to innovation with area companies like Sage Products, Covidien and Duraflex.

As the economy recovers, companies in the area are starting to feel more confident about research and development, Cumpata said.

“Research and development is not important, it’s critical,” she said. “It’s all about how we improve a product, improve a process, and make things better. If we are not innovating, then business stops.”
