Commission hears vision for STC mall

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The contract buyers of Charlestowne Mall presented their plans Tuesday to revive the shopping center.

Much of what they told the St. Charles Plan Commission was similar to what they shared at the Planning and Development Committee last month.

This time, however, the presentation was part of a public hearing about their request to amend the existing PUD ordinance to allow for proposed improvements.

David Pyle, an executive vice president with The Krausz Companies, said they want to change some physical aspects of the mall to make it more attractive to tenants, such as adding restaurants and banks along Route 64, redoing the main entrance and making the cinemas more vis-

Now, he said, Charlestowne Mall is like a fortress.

“You don’t know what’s in there until you go in,” Pyle said.

The mall’s interior also will get a new look, he said, listing a fireplace and children’s play area as potential elements.

The goal is to make the mall a safe place for people to eat, shop and have fun.

“It’s a gathering place,” Pyle said.

Commission members expressed concerns about parking for the businesses along Route 64, traffic flow and walkability. Member Tim Kessler also wanted assurances that the exterior improvements would make the entire mall – not just sections of it – look new.

Pyle noted they don’t have

control over Kohl’s and Von Maur because the retailers own their buildings.

Despite their questions and concerns, commission members said they liked the plans.

“I really appreciate and like what you’re proposing here,” Brian Doyle said.

Resident Bill Page wanted to make sure the contract purchasers – known collectively as SC Main 3800 – felt the community’s support.

“We’re being thrown a lifeline, an economic engine we haven’t had in years,” he said, cautioning the commission from criticizing the color and weave of the metaphorical rope. “I assure you, the citizens, are fully supportive of an innovative plan like this. I hope it comes to fruition.”

The public hearing was continued to Oct. 22. The Plan Commission is expected to make a recommendation to the St. Charles City Council at that time.

Aldermen recommend approval of Houston Street design

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting voted 10-2 to recommend approval of the design of streetscape improvements for the street. As proposed, the improvements would not occur until 2015.

now go before the City Council. Aldermen had previously expressed concern with reducing the number of parking spaces from 41 to 29 as part of the proposed design. They also were concerned about the design of the proposed bike path.

City staff had asked Christopher B. Burke Engineering to redesign the layout, and the firm put together two alternatives to consider. There was a determination made that two spaces along the south

side of Houston Street near Water Street would have to be removed from both plans because of visibility issues, resulting in 39 total spaces.

Both designs incorporate diagonal parking on the north side of Houston Street.

The main difference between the two proposals is that the bike path and the sidewalk are “swapped,” according to Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening.

Staff preferred the plan

with the sidewalk adjacent to the parking from a safety perspective. That is the proposal aldermen also preferred.

“If the bike path is closer to the parking, people could step out between the cars directly into the bike path without seeing bike traffic,” Buening said.

The new design carries an additional cost, which would bring the project’s estimated cost to $2.9 million, up from $2.8 million, excluding a 10 percent contingency fee.

High hopes for local corn, soybean crops

‘A really good year’

jbilyk@shawmedia.com Phil Farrell has just started to see the amber waves come rolling into his grain storage facilities.

But so far, Farrell, grain division manager at agricultural services company Elburn Cooperative, said he likes what he is seeing and hearing from local farmers.

“They’re early returns, but in general, they’ve been good,” Farrell said. “Based on what we’ve seen, this could be a really good year from a production standpoint.”

Throughout western Kane County and elsewhere in more rural areas of northern Illinois, harvester combines began rolling through farm fields in mid-September, as farmers began the task of bringing in the millions of bushels of corn and soybeans they had planted about four to five months ago.

Most farmers have begun by raking in their soybean crops.

Chris Gould, who with his family farms acreage in both Kane and DeKalb counties near Maple Park, said he began rolling through his fields about two weeks ago.

On Monday, Gould said he has completed about 70 percent of his soybean harvest and about 20 percent of his corn.

“We’re getting a good start on it,” he said.

But even better, he and Farrell said the corn and soybeans that have been brought in from the fields so far appear to be of a fairly high quality and in fairly high abundance.

Gould said his soybeans have been “average to well above average,” while his corn has been “slightly above average to well above average.”

The yields he said have been better than those recorded in most years, and significantly better than the lackluster harvests brought in amid last year’s drought.

“It’s a nice change of pace,” Gould said.

Farrell said harvests so far this year have been “above expectations.”

He said local corn yields have ranged from about 160 bushels per acre to more than 200 bushels per acre, while soybean fields have yielded more than 60 bushels per acre.

Last year, growers in Kane County brought in 120 to 150 bushels of corn per acre, and about 45 bushels per acre of soybeans. If those trends hold, they would represent increases in yield of 33 percent to 50 percent versus 2012.

John Hawkins, spokesman for the Bloomington-based Illinois Farm Bureau, said those estimates also compare favorably to what has been seen statewide.

Amid the late summer dry spell, Hawkins said many farmers were “ratcheting down expectations.”

“But that turned out to be, pleasantly, not the case at all,” Hawkins said. “It’s a very good crop.”

Statewide harvest progress estimates are hard to come by, as the U.S. Agriculture Department has refused to release new reports on crops while funding from the federal government remains in question amid the stalemate over the shutdown of the federal government.

However, Hawkins “guesstimated” that the harvest in the state is about 20 percent complete, based on past harvests and the observations he has made himself and heard from others.

In its last crop progress report issued Sept. 30, the USDA estimated about 13 percent of corn and about 10 percent of soybeans had been harvested in Illinois as of Sept. 29.

Normally, by that date, 34 percent of corn and 15 percent of soybeans had been collected statewide, the USDA data showed.

Last year, 69 percent of corn and 20 percent of soybeans had been harvested by Sept. 29, the USDA said.

The main challenge facing farmers appears to be the water content remaining in their corn kernels because the corn in the fields has not yet dried down to the moisture levels sought by grain distributors.

So farmers are harvesting their soybeans first to give the corn in the fields more

time to dry naturally, reducing the need to pay to dry the corn using mechanical dryers while it is in storage later.

Because of the potentially huge corn harvest, prices for corn have slipped in recent weeks down to levels not seen since 2009. This week, corn for March 2014 delivery had fallen to around $4.50-$4.75 a bushel. At this time last year, March 2014 corn was trading for $6.60 a bushel.

Soybeans have proven more resilient, holding around $13 a bushel.

“I guess there’s not enough soybeans to go around in the world,” Gould said. “But there’s more than enough corn.”

Farrell and Gould said they expect the local harvest to continue through October and the first 2 to 3 weeks of November, as farmers wait for their corn to dry and dodge raindrops.

“Historically, we’re usually wrapped up by around Thanksgiving,” Farrell said.

“So, if we’re done before then, we’re ahead of the game.”

Kane County State’s Attorney focuses on domestic violence

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is blunt when describing what it’s like to prosecute domestic violence cases.

“Domestic violence is tricky,” he said Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

He noted every case has different factors that lead to physical violence, and it affects all types of people.

“Domestic violence is a serious issue that we all face,” McMahon said of its geographical scope.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Joe Kane County McMahon has seen results since it began a domestic violence diversion program three years ago, McMahon said.

The program targets firsttime offenders willing to take responsibility for their actions. Participants receive counseling two hours a week for 26 weeks.

“Diversion provides immediate access to counseling,” McMahon said, giving a timeframe of 60 to 90 days after the arrest.

Maureen Manning-Rosenfeld, director of client services at the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, said counselors are convincing the participants at a much earlier phase that they are participating in “self-defeating” behavior.

“The treatment works,” she said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser, who prosecutes domestic violence cases, said 207 people have successfully completed the diversion program, and 46 cases have resulted in a negative termination. She noted there are 281 active cases.

Changing behavior is important because it is often passed down by parents to their children, Mosser said.

In her eight years with the State’s Attorney’s Office, she said, she has already seen that cycle of learned behavior affect a family.

AILEEN RUBY WEBER Died: Oct. 5, 2013 BATAVIA – Aileen Ruby Weber, 76, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Ruby and Burl Humes.

Aileen was a homemaker while her children were young. She did foster care many years for 17 children, mostly babies. They were the love of her life. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Tuesday awarded the Nobel Prize in physics to British physicist Peter Higgs and Belgian physicist Francois Englert to recognize their work developing the theory of what is now known as the Higgs field, which gives elementary particles mass, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

“It is an honor that the Nobel Committee recognizes

Police: Two-car crash sends four to hospital

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com VIRGIL TOWNSHIP – Four people were hospitalized Monday following a two-car crash near the Fox Valley Wildlife Center, according to a report from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, a 17-year-old girl from Elburn was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus west on Route 38 in Virgil Township at about 6 p.m. As she was turning left at 45W061 Route 38, she reportedly hit

a 2001 Honda CR-V traveling east.

Both vehicles sustained front-end damage and were towed from the scene, according to the report.

The teen, the other driver – a 40-year-old man from St. Charles – and his two young passengers were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for evaluation, according to the report.

The man was in stable condition Tuesday, hospital spokesman Chris King said. He said the other driver wasn’t listed with the hospital.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The amount of affordable housing in Batavia has decreased since 2000, according to a study conducted by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

The results of the study were presented Monday to Batavia officials.

The study also included the cities of Geneva and St.

Charles as well as the village of North Aurora.

According to the study, about 75 percent of owner-occupied homes in Batavia were in the affordable category in 2000.

Affordable housing is defined as being less than 30 percent of a household’s income.

In 2011, that number dropped to about 65 percent, according to the study.

The study also projects

that Batavia will grow to a population of 26,045 by 2040, up from the city’s 2011 population of 25,828, which is the latest population count for Batavia.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the study will be useful in helping city officials plan for the future.

She also is a member of the Batavia MainStreet board.

During the conference, Batavia MainStreet was pre-

sented with three awards for Main Street achievements.

Batavia MainStreet and the city of Batavia were awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Downtown Revitalization in the categories of design, organization and economic restructuring.

The award for design was for the River Street streetscape project. The awarding committee noted the investment of the city to develop the street, invite the private sector to continue to develop and give the existing buildings a new “welcome mat.” Overall, the street concept, called a “Woonerf” (a shared space), has created an outdoor space for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians to share.

was for Batavia MainStreet’s “Celebrate Success” event for bringing together volunteers, partners, business and property owners to celebrate and acknowledge their hard work and dedication to the community.

The third award for economic restructuring was for the new Artisan Collective pop-up flash market. This market is designed to provide a retail presence downtown, as well as a much-needed venue for local artists, designers and artisans to show and sell their wares.

“We are so proud to be working with such an amazing community, with dedicated volunteers, that have a vision for their downtown,” Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Joi Cuartero said.

Five results of refusing to raise the U.S. debt ceiling BLOOMBERG NEWS The global economy is facing a bizarre man-made threat – radical legislators in the United States think forcing the government to renege on its obligations would be a good way to shock it into recognizing the error of its fiscally imprudent ways.

Lest anyone take this notion seriously, here’s what would happen if that threat were carried out.

To keep spending, the government needs Congress to pass a spending law. Republicans have already blocked this, resulting in a partial government shutdown.

Now they are threatening the separate and much more disruptive step of refusing to raise the federal debt ceiling, currently set at $16.7 trillion. Spending exceeds revenue, so without permission to borrow more, the government can’t pay its bills even if a law to allow spending goes through. If the debt ceiling stays in place, the Treasury will run short of cash soon after Oct. 17.

At that point: 1. Global markets will see the U.S. government as grossly and dangerously incompetent.

Refusing to raise the debt ceiling is fundamentally different from cutting the government’s funding.

It’s as if Congress were sending the Treasury two contradictory and legally binding orders – one that requires it to make hundreds of billions of dollars a month in payments, another that prevents it from borrowing the money it needs to do so.

2. Forced spending cuts will kill the economic recovery.

Over the course of a year, the Treasury borrows roughly $1 out of every $5 it spends, so hitting the debt ceiling would require it to cut outlays by about a fifth. Such a severe fiscal squeeze would crush a still tentative recovery.

3. The U.S. government might actually default on its debts.

Some in Congress apparently think that hitting the debt ceiling need not mean missing a payment on the $12 trillion in government bonds outstanding – an event that markets would call a default, which could trigger a financial catastrophe (see No. 4). The House of Representatives has passed legislation to authorize the Treasury to prioritize such payments.

Even if the Senate passed that measure, which it has refused to do so far, it might not be enough for technical and other reasons.

4. A default could trigger a global crash.

Treasury bonds are the foundation of the U.S. and global financial systems. Securities dealers in the U.S. hold some $1.9 trillion in Treasuries as collateral on loans to hedge funds, banks and other financial companies. Mutual funds, pension plans and corporations rely on interest payments from Treasuries to meet their obligations to investors, retirees and workers.

The slightest concern about the U.S. government’s ability or willingness to pay could prompt investors to demand a higher return on the bonds and dealers to toughen the terms on which they accept Treasuries as collateral. That would abruptly raise the cost of credit for everyone – or else freeze financial markets altogether.

5. The government’s fiscal problems will only get worse.

It’s true that U.S. finances are on a troubling long-term trajectory.

Heightened fears among investors will increase the government’s cost of borrowing. Even a rise of 1 percentage point would increase the government’s costs by $120 billion a year.

The longer-term fiscal problem is readily soluble. Threatening a sovereign default, with all the enormous risks it entails, is not part of the solution. Arguing otherwise carries irresponsibility into the realm of insanity.

The decision on funding the government will be made based on party lines, and the country will suffer one way or another.

Decisions will be made that have little bearing on solving the underlying problems. The federal government doesn’t solve problems; it creates them.

Most everyone in the federal government will be excluded from Obamacare, so they have no stake in it, while they tell us it’s affordable and good for us.

Apparently it’s not affordable and good for them, but funding the government is at stake.

Rather than solve a problem, our elected officials will vote, and the president will or won’t agree, based on party lines, rather than solve the issue.

We, the citizens of America, deserve a solution to the problems, not a fight for political power.

Officials tout District 302’s improvements

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland administrators touted District 302’s achievements, such as improved test scores and better communication tactics, during the second annual “State of the District” on Monday.

After a presentation that highlighted five key areas of the district – teaching and learning, support systems, human resources, finance and community relations – attendees were invited to talk one on one with administrators. Several administrators said they’ll continue to brand the district around its mission to “graduate all students college, ca-

reer and community ready.”

During the presentation, Erika Schlichter – director of educational services for grades 6-12 – and Sarah Mumm – director of educational services K-5 – outlined gains in the Prairie State Achievement Exam and the ACT. Juniors’ ACT scores in English, math, reading and science improved by 9, 4, 18 and 13 percent, respectively, compared with the previous year. The number of students who met or exceeded state standards for ACT scores varied widely, however.

According to district data, 75 percent of Kaneland students met or exceeded standards last year in English, while 41 percent met or

exceeded standards in science.

Sugar Grove resident Kristi Lockhart, a parent of a second-grader and fourth-grader in the district, said she liked the idea of having a State of the District meeting, but said a lot of Jeff Schuler the information was “too top-surface.”

She said she would like to have seen a more tangible comparison of the key areas discussed Monday.

“Frankly, I was shocked by the ACT scores,” she said. “... I’d like to know what it was before. I don’t think it’s fair to say, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s

so bad.’ I feel like a big part was missing.”

Mumm noted that the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes increased by 52 percent from last year.

Fran Eggleston, director of special services for the district, said looking forward, the district will continue to focus on implementing its bullying prevention plan and providing a social-emotional support structure for students.

Mumm added that district officials plan to start work this winter on a labor agreement for salary only as the current contract, which froze teacher salaries in the 2010-11 school year.

Schuler said the district has geared up its community relations efforts in the last year, rolling out a mobile application and developing new social media strategies through Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

Although the State of the District presentation is only in its second year, Cheryl Krauspe, the school board’s president, said she wished more people would have attended. Administrators said the presentation would be posted online later.

“I wish the place were packed [Monday],” she said.

“We want [the community] to know that we’re moving in the right direction.”

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County’s government moved closer to tying up the loose ends remaining on its 2014 spending plan.

But next year’s proposed county budget has its critics, including Kane County’s coroner, who believes the financial proposal will leave him shortchanged and unable to complete his office’s tasks without an additional infusion of cash.

Tuesday, the Kane County Board voted 22-2 to place on file for public review a final budget proposal for 2014.

The nearly quarter of a

billion dollar overall budget includes about $80.5 million to fund day-to-day operations in the county, which includes such items as the county’s courts, jail, sheriff’s police, transportation division, health department, building department and others.

That would mark a 5.6 percent increase in the county’s general fund over last year.

However, county officials including Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen noted the county is not asking for any more money from property taxpayers next year.

To achieve that goal, the county budget will reduce some property tax levies, dedicated to pensions and county

liability insurance, to boost spending elsewhere.

The county’s chief financial officer, Joe Onzick, reiterated Tuesday that, despite the changes, the county also will fully fund its employee pensions and other obligations.

Such budget-balancing maneuvers led some on the board to question whether the county could continue to balance the budget and hold the line on the tax levy again next year.

To that end, several board members including John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, chairman of the Kane County Board’s Finance Committee, urged the board to adopt a multiyear approach begin-

ning next year.

The budget, however, also was notable for something it did not include: funding for two new deputy coroners and to pay for an increased number of autopsies, as was requested by Kane County Coroner Rob Russell.

Russell had asked the county for $867,700 to fund his office next year, a 15 percent increase over this year. He had said the additional money was needed to hire the two new deputies to sharply curtail the need for overtime and on-call pay for after hours work.

Instead, at the recommendation of Lauzen and Onzick, the County Board signed off on funding of $817,800 for the

coroner, eliminating the two new positions and essentially giving Russell about $60,000 more to pay for the additional work.

Onzick and Lauzen called the recommendation a “reasonable compromise.”

Russell, however, said no such “compromise” existed because he never agreed to any such deal. He also said the amount would leave his office underfunded.

“This is neither reasonable nor a compromise,” he said.

The county budget will remain open to review and public comment for a month. The County Board is scheduled to vote on the budget at its next meeting Nov. 12.

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Despite a “glowing endorsement” from the head of the county’s health department, the Kane County Board opted to give itself another month to consider whether to sign off on the appointment of a political supporter of Kane County’s chief executive to be the head of Animal Control.

Tuesday, the Kane County Board postponed until November a vote on the appointment of Robert Sauceda as the county’s new animal control administrator.

The 13-11 vote to table came despite a strong push from Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and words of high praise for Sauceda from Barb Jeffers, executive director of the Kane County Health Department, which oversees Animal Control.

The appointment did not come as a surprise, as Lauzen had attempted to appoint Sauceda to the post at the beginning of the year. That idea encountered strong opposition from some on the board to the appointment of Sauceda, who had come with no prior experience in animal control or veterinary medicine.

Sauceda had backed

Lauzen’s run for Kane County Board chairman in 2012.

Lauzen instead seized on a compromise solution, appointing Sauceda in January to serve as billing manager in the financially plagued county department.

Since that time, Sauceda has performed well in the post, Jeffers and Lauzen said.

Jeffers noted that revenue in the department – which is self-funding and receives no tax money – increased 36 percent under Sauceda’s administration versus. 2012.

Last year, the department was without an administrator for the final six months of the year after the resignation of the last administrator, and the resulting financial turmoil forced the county to make animal control’s annual payment on the loan for the animal control facility.

Jeffers said Sauceda focused on increasing the collection of unpaid animal registration fees. She said he also increased adoptions of animals from Animal Control, and helped the department catch up on its record keeping.

As the county sought a new Animal Control administrator, Jeffers said Sauceda was one of three candidates interviewed for the job.

“And Rob Sauceda was the chosen one,” Jeffers said.

She said the County Board should give Sauceda “the opportunity to grow and expand” the Animal Control Department.

Some on the board, however, questioned how the appointment was being made.

These asked why Lauzen did not at least submit the appointment first to the County

“I can’t help but feel this wasn’t a completely just process,” said County Board member Myrna Molina, D-Aurora. “That this candidate had a leg up because he was already doing the job.”

To give more time to discuss the matter, Molina asked the board to delay the

vote for 30 days, to which the board narrowly agreed.

After the meeting, Lauzen chided the board for not immediately assenting to Jeffers’ recommendation, and said he was disappointed with the decision to postpone, calling it “a disservice to taxpayers.”

He also noted that he had opted to wait to bring the appointment to the board until minutes before it was to vote on the matter, because he wanted to avoid allowing “a couple of folks” on the board to “play politics” with the appointment.

Lauzen said he hoped the board will use the delay to see the good he said Sauceda has done for Animal Control.

“They certainly did not say no,” Lauzen said of the board. “They said they want to give it more thought.”

The fire extinguishing lesson is a big highlight in the training sessions for the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team. Rogers, 66, is among 16 in the class, learn-

ing skills such as fire extinguishing, search and rescue and medical operations. Elburn emergency officials will put on the classes periodically in an effort to train community members in critical skills, so residents could be prepared in an actual emergency.

Some members of the class might join the Elburn CERT, which provides assistance such as traffic control, when necessary.

Elburn Village Trustee Dave Gualdoni is a leader in the Elburn CERT community, and he helps organize the classes. Gualdoni said

the group began in 2009. He shows up for the sessions and provides encouragement for those who take them.

“It helps people help themselves,” he said.

Rogers would seem a natural fit for the class. His son-in-law, George Smith, is a firefighter in Crystal Lake and once was a paid on-call firefighter in Batavia and Geneva. Although participants were enjoying the fire extinguisher exercise, Rogers said he understood how important it was to learn such skills.

“This is a serious organization,” he said. Rogers said

that since he is retired, he has time to offer community service.

Another participant, Batavia resident Robin Buenrostro, 55, said her husband, Jim, is a firefighter in West Chicago. She said she enjoyed the classroom instruction, but she was excited to journey into the firehouse and get the training on the fire extinguisher.

“I like the hands-on stuff,” she said. “This is what I want to learn. … To me, this is the best thing.”

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – None on the Elburn Village Board had anything but praise Monday night for the volunteers who work with the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team, acknowledging the work they do – including directing traffic in emergencies and being poised to help when needed if a situation

were to escalate – is important.

But they couldn’t come to an agreement on how to define the group’s relationship with the village when faced with the issue of providing accident coverage.

Ultimately, trustees opted to keep things at “status quo,” providing $1,062 in insurance for the organization.

But Erin Willret, the village administrator, pushed for an

answer on the question: “Is it a function of the village?” Officials said they’d determine the answer in the next few weeks.

Among the questions: Is CERT a government entity?

Could there be an intergovernmental agreement? Perhaps there could be a memorandum of understanding? Is it an auxiliary police group?

Some trustees noted the importance of the services

the CERT group can perform.

Noting that many freight train cars pass through the village each day, Trustee Bill Grabarek said that having individuals with critical training would be valuable in the event something goes wrong.

But Village President Dave Anderson said that didn’t answer Willret’s question.

“Is CERT a function of the village?” Anderson said was

the question, “not [whether it is] valuable to the village. … As a board, that is the decision that has to be made.”

Trustee Dave Gualdoni, who is directly involved with the CERT group, said it has been a struggle to define the village’s relationship with the group. Trustees indicated they would like more information about how CERT groups are defined in other towns.

She said she was taking the class because it’s important to know what to do in an emergency. She said she could imagine how helpful it would be “if we all took this training.”

Reese said he does a lot of public education classes. He pointed out that this is National Fire Prevention Week, so the timing is ideal.

And he credited Gualdoni for helping make it happen, saying that the trustee “is very committed to this program.” Reese said those who go through it come out with a better understanding of what the fire department does.

“All we ask is that they get basic knowledge out of the class,” Reese said.

Also at the class was Laura Andersen, a Campton Hills village trustee. Andersen said she was “a graduate of this course and part of the CERT team in Elburn,” as well as an NRA instructor. She praised Gualdoni for pushing for the training for those outside of Elburn. And, as she watched participants take their turns at the fire, she noted that they now would know what to do if they had to put out a fire at home or at a neighbor’s house.

“They are empowered by the knowledge,” Andersen said.

Batavia Marching Band wins awards KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – The Batavia High School Marching Band won several awards Saturday at the Knight of Champions Competition in Mount Prospect.

The Batavia Marching Bulldogs were awarded third place in the Class AA Competition and also won caption awards for Best Percussion and Color Guard in their class. In addition, percussion and color guard each placed second out of all the bands competing.

Lions Club to install ADA-compliant equipment at Lions Park playground

“We’ll be out there at 8 a.m. Saturday, bright and early to get this started,” said Pam Hall, past president of the Elburn Lions. “It’s been a long time coming.”

The work also will include the installation of “sensory panels,” special playground equipment that includes built-in tactile elements to make the play area more inviting for children of all abilities.

“For some children, it may be difficult for them to, for example, get down in the sand and play,” Hall said. “This makes the playground a lot more fun for them.”

Hall said it had been her desire for some time, and her priority while Elburn Lions president, to lead the effort to bring the 25-year-old play-

ground equipment at the park into compliance with the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. “It’s something I wanted to do, and now we have the opportunity to see it through and follow through on this,” she said.

All the funds for the project were raised by the Elburn Lions and the club’s junior wing, the Leo Club.

All labor on the project also will be completed by volunteers, she said, with the guidance of representatives of the suppliers from whom the Elburn Lions purchased the new playground equipment.

North, East, Geneva advance

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Batavia senior boys golfer Jacob Piechota rated St. Andrews’ green difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10 after Tuesday’s IHSA Class 3A St. Charles East Regional.

Piechota assigned the highest possible score, a figure he guessed was four or five slots greater than when the same course hosted the Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament last week.

What’s that they say about familiarity breeding contempt?

While Tri-Cities athletes ultimately aced the test – champion St. Charles East (319), Geneva (321) and St. Charles North (326) advanced to next week’s sectionals, along with Piechota and two Bulldogs teammates – the ride proved considerably bumpier than golfers first thought.

“Today, you couldn’t put a ball above the hole,” Piechota said. “Unless you hit the cup or made it, you couldn’t have kept it within five feet. It was just going to roll on down.”

Saints junior Luke Molloy’s 5-over-par 76 edged teammate Kyle Jacobs and Geneva freshman Graham Lillibridge by two strokes for individual medalist honors.

Still beaming after watching the opening stages of a four-man playoff that determined the final two individual sectional spots, Molloy told of a tempered approach through his smile.

“I think it really helped to have a strong mind today because so many of the pin placements were too hard,” he said. “There were a lot of holes where you had to accept a bogey and move on, and I did that quite a few times.”

Rough starts were the norm rather than the exception.

East’s Brad Riva opened at 8-over after five holes en route to an 83. Piechota smoothed out an 8-over start after six holes to emerge with an 80.

Riva, for one, rallied behind a motivational speech from coach John Stock, whose volume still fell inside the boundaries of golf etiquette.

“He’s like, ‘I want to see the fire in your eyes,’ “ Riva said, “so I got that going, started getting more motivated, more energy, and it helped me turn it up.”

Balancing emotional pangs with course management was made slightly easier at St. Andrews, which hosted a sectional in 2012.

Third-place North relied on steady play from seniors Raghav Cherala (81), Santino Salamone (81), Matt Samuelson (82) and JT Grill (82) to advance to sectionals as a team for the fourth straight season.

“There were some tough situations on the greens today, and I know it’s the same for everybody, but still, when you’re a high school kid, it’s a regional, it’s a big deal,” North Stars coach Rob Prentiss said.

“And when you’re struggling on the greens, they don’t know everybody else is struggling,

Among the more difficult green-pin placement combos players cited was the par5 14th hole. Lillibridge was among those who were taken aback, despite scoring an eagle.

Facing a headwind on his third shot from about 113 yards out, Lillibridge clubbed up and decided on a knockdown 9-iron approach. The shot eventually provided

great salve for two successive bogeys.

“I knew I needed to stay below the hole because that pin placement was really tough,” Lillibridge said. “When I hit it, it was going right at [the hole], and I was like, ‘Oh, that should be good.’ And then I saw it fly past and kind of start coming back. It kind of kept creeping closer and closer, and then it just disappeared, and I was shocked.”

I like the ones on or around campus, like the grassy area. I like that type of soft grass. … It’s easier on your feet and legs.

How do you prepare when you face a long bus ride before the race?

I do some stretches on the bus. ... Yeah, right when we get to the course in our quiet time before

the race, we walk the course and make sure we know every turn. And I also just get very well warmed-up before the race.

Lillibridge matched his conference tournament score to lead runner-up Geneva, which handed East its lone loss of the UEC River duals season in winning the league title. Brett Hassels (80), Alex Schreiber (81) and Dan Cisco (82) were next for the Vikings.

Molloy shaved two strokes from last week’s 78, but Stock was equally encouraged with

Riva and Jake Bertke (82), who “did what seniors have to do” in scoring after not factoring into the team score last week.

Batavia’s Nick LaRocco (84) nearly made it four Bulldogs entrants, but was eliminated after the first playoff hole.

Batavia senior Nick Bleidorn, who shot an 83 to advance as an individual alongside teammates Nick Robinson (83) and Piechota, recovered after not scor-

ing at conference. Crediting a swing adjustment, he’s now Springbrook-bound and ready for whatever the course has to offer.

“We’re just going to have to take it and just hit shots straight, you know,” Bleidorn said. “If you don’t know the course all that well, you’ve just got to focus on hitting the ball where you’re aiming.”

Should the green happen to intervene after that, it’s just another adjustment.

Weber helped the Rockets to their first regional title in program history while also establishing a program best team score Tuesday in the IHSA Class 2A Aurora Central Catholic Regional at Phillips Park Golf Course.

Weber tied Matt Weber his own mark for best 18-hole total in program history, firing a 5-under-par 66 to set the pace in Central’s 295 team score. That was three strokes better than the previous program record, set earlier this season at Mill Creek in Geneva.

“I got word on the 16 tee box of how other guys’ rounds were shaping up, and thoughts were rushing through about breaking the school record and stuff,” Weber said. “It was a lot of fun coming in to make a few birdies and see all the guys there, and celebrate with them.”

Weber played at Phillips Park in an invitational last month, and shot a 72. The Indiana recruit and rural St. Charles resident was much sharper Tuesday, making six birdies and a bogey to go with 11 pars.

Weber said his drives were much more reliable this time.

“You can’t ask for any better weather than this,” Weber said. “Our first at least 13 holes we were playing with just no wind whatsoever. They were as close as you’re going to get here in the Midwest to perfect conditions.”

Rockets junior Austin Niesel carded a 72, while brothers Andrew Sherman (77), a junior, and Joe Sherman (80), a freshman, also helped the Rockets make program history.

Tuesday’s performance

solidified to veteran Rockets coach Deb Twenhafel that this is the best team she’s coached in her 26 years.

“I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep last night because I knew we were there,” Twenhafel said. “It was just if we could put it all together with four good scores, and the boys did that today.”

Aurora Central Catholic (298) and Kaneland (310) were the other two teams in the 10team regional to advance to Monday’s 2A Freeport Sectional.

Kaneland’s depth kept the Knights alive for another week. The Knights tied St. Edward for the third and final advancing spot, and moved on to sectionals instead of the Green Wave based on a fifth-score tiebreaker.

The Knights advanced to the IHSA state tournament as a team last year, and will have the opportunity to make it again via Monday’s Freeport Sectional.

“It means a lot to us,” Kaneland senior Matt Yonkovich said of the team advancement.

“It means we’ve got to practice hard this next week. We’ve got to shoot better as a team at sectionals to advance.”

Yonkovich paced Kaneland with a 4-under-par 67. That score, remarkably, was not enough to nab the individual title, but Yonkovich thinks his sparkling round “will stand out quite a bit” to prospective college recruiters.

“Matt’s a really good golfer,” Yonkovich said of Weber.

“It’s a little upsetting [not to win with 67], but he did good.”

Brody Kuhar (78), Jeremy Faletto (81) and Jesse Denton and Stephen Cannell (84 each) also came through for Kaneland. St. Ed’s fifth score was 91.

ACC posted four scores in the 70s – Sean Harreld (72), Daniel Miller (73), Justin Prince (74) and Mac Cowan (79).

Wheaton Academy (311 team score) had three players beat the individual qualifying cut of 82 – Grant Gosden (71), Zack Spear (75) and Bobby Teevans (80).

felt, and he didn’t. He didn’t at all.

The way it’s been explained to us is it’s just dumb luck as to how it all happened.”

Clint Hull said the family naturally is “haunted” by wondering if Hull’s aggressive recovery timetable was too swift but he emphasized that his son passed all the medical protocols to be cleared to play.

A Southern Illinois-Edwardsville recruit, Hull made his official visit to SIU-E over the weekend after the unbeaten Saints traveled to suburban St. Louis to participate in a weekend tournament.

Clint Hull said his son will have surgery as soon as possible in hopes of minimizing the disruption to his college career.

But he had his heart set on helping the Saints down the stretch, and the hurdles ahead will be mental and emotional as well as physical.

“The first time you go through it you don’t really know what to expect so there is a certain amount of ignorance is bliss part to it where you don’t know what’s ahead of you,” Clint Hull said. “ … I think the hardest part for

TC is he understands what this all means. He understands what surgery all means and the pain and the rehab and all that stuff.

That part makes it 100 percent more difficult.”

TC might not want to hear it quite yet, but there are plenty of examples of athletes going on to flourish after a pair of ACL tears, even locally.

Geneva girls basketball senior Sidney Santos suffered a pair of ACL tears in her first two years of high school before going on to earn a Division I scholarship at Oakland (Mich.).

“It’s a cruel thing, but he’ll bounce back,” Clint Hull said.

“He’ll be fine.”

Barry picks up another offer: St. Charles East football senior Brannon Barry picked up a scholarship offer from a second in-state, Missouri Valley Football Conference program.

STC East soccer roars to comeback win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys soccer team stormed back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Larkin, 4-2, on Tuesday in Upstate Eight Conference River play.

Tyler Robbins scored the goahead goal with 1:36 to play and Evan DiLeonardi added a late insurance goal for his second score of the half, providing the final margin. Taylor Ortiz scored the Saints’ first goal to trigger the comeback.

The win kept East (15-0-4, 4-0-1 UEC River) unbeaten and in first place ahead of Saturday’s conference finale against St. Charles North.

East coach Paul Jennison said the Saints balanced playing with great emotion and discipline in the second half.

“It was definitely great to turn that around in the second half,” Jennison said.

Geneva 3, Elgin 0: At Elgin, Beck Nebergall scored twice, including on a penalty kick, to snap a scoreless tie at intermission. Joe Mozden made nine saves to earn the shutout for Geneva (7-8, 2-4 UEC River).

By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Geneva girls tennis coach Maureen Weiler said she wants her girls to be playing their best at this time of the year. And that’s exactly what she’s getting.

Geneva continued its excellent stretch in conference play Tuesday, remaining undefeated with a 6-1 win at St. Charles North.

The Vikings started the day in dominant fashion, with the top two singles players, Kirby Einck and Grace Krueger, both winning, 6-0, 6-0. And when the fourth doubles team of Brianna Meister and Kaleigh Barnaba grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win in its match, Geneva needed just one more win to take the meet.

But things tightened up as the afternoon turned to evening, with a trio of doubles matches heading into twilight. Eventually, though, the Vikings won all three remaining doubles contests. The third doubles team of Liz Fallon and Maddie Cordaq won 6-4, 7-5. The second doubles team of Nicole Leskun and Shannon Foster won 7-6 (9-7), 7-5. And, in the darkness for yet another time this season, the No. 1 doubles team of Margo Hess and Emma Hazel won in three sets and a tiebreaker 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8).

“We started off a little bit rough in the first set, but we really pulled it together in the second set and we really just talked about what we need to do. And we really came through, we won, 6-1, which was awesome,” Hazel said. “Then the other girls definitely got a little more competitive in the third one, so it was much closer. But I think we held up under the pressure and we figured it out, and we came back and won the tiebreaker. So it felt really

good.

“Actually, we’ve had a lot of these matches where we went to three sets sand tiebreakers, so we’re almost kind of used to it. But this was definitely a pretty stressful one.”

The lone winner for North was No. 3 singles player Micaela Mascha, who scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Mascha said it’s another step forward for her in a season that’s gone much better than the last.

“I’ve kind of had a good season this season,” Mascha said, “way better than last year. So that’s definitely better. I’ve just been having a lot more fun, getting to know the girls and playing a lot better, too.”

The win keeps the Vikings’ conference record unblemished at 5-0 – they’re 15-4 overall – heading into today’s unfinished meet with St. Charles East, where the Vikings and Saints will need to finish up two matches from a dual meet that was suspended last week with East ahead, 3-2. The meeting with the Saints comes just a few days before the conference tournament this weekend, where Geneva has its sights set on a championship. And the way the Vikings are playing, it’s definitely a possibility.

“That’s how it should be. End of the season, you hope the girls are playing their best and being competitive all the way around,” Weiler said.

“This is just good tennis.

You look for the girls to be competitive, especially toward the end of the season.

“It’s going to be the usual battle coming down to it. It’s nice when it’s this close because everybody’s going to have to – the whole team is going to have to play good in order for whatever team it is that wins conference.”

Just when TC Hull was on the verge of a dramatic comeback, the gifted St. Charles East soccer forward is back to square one.

Hull is understandably devastated after re-tearing his right ACL on Sunday, just three days after his doctor and physical therapist cleared him to play after his April injury and June surgery.

The senior has not played in a match this fall but was targeting East’s senior night Thursday for a potential season debut, just two weeks before the postseason begins for the powerhouse Saints.

Hull is the reigning Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year, having scored 31 goals last season while helping boost East to conference, regional and sectional championships.

His father, Clint Hull, said the plan was to ease Hull back toward competing with some “small-sided” play, such as the 3-on-3 scrimmage he was playing in a neighbor’s yard Sunday evening at the time of the injury.

“It wasn’t slow but there were three guys over 40 all playing, so that should give some idea as to the speed,” Clint Hull said. “The whole concept was to let him get out there and feel [his knee], let him twist and turn and see if he had any concern about how he

NOTEWORTHY Knights’ Guyton reinvigorated Kaneland junior Tori Guyton faced long lulls between each of her competitive rounds this season. As an individual representing a school without a full girls team, she entered tournaments at a sporadically-scheduled pace.

Guyton’s mental game admittedly sputtered early, but re-adjusting to the nonteam format after playing the 2012 regular season alongside the Kaneland boys eventually provided a spark.

Entering today’s Class AA Burlington Central Regional at Sycamore Golf Club, Guyton feels about as collected as she has all season.

“Right before tryouts this year, I was freaking myself out and worried I was not going to be playing with the boys,” she said. “I went through a two-week slump and had about zero confi-

dence, but I’ve picked myself up and been practicing about as hard as I can.”

Guyton and classmate Julia VanGemert – both all-Northern Illinois Big 12 honorees last week – split practices between Hughes Creek in Elburn and Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, where Guyton’s father, John, is head pro.

Guyton, the NI Big 12 medalist, and VanGemert have been friends since seventh grade, a familiarity not unlike the underlying focus of most practice rounds.

“Just short game, short game, short game,” Guyton said.

Knights coach Mark Meyer, who splits attending Guyton and VanGemert’s tournaments with assistant Ken Neahring based on the boys’ schedule, calls the duo “a two-person team” that has made the best out of their situation.

“They hang a lot together.

They play a lot together.

They’re both talented golfers,” Meyer said.

Reinvigorated to compete and hopeful to advance to Monday’s Rockford Guilford Sectional and beyond, Guyton is primed to turn in her best finish to date.

The younger sister of former Kaneland standout Haley Guyton, now at Illinois State, Guyton was a sectional qualifier in 2012.

“It has been truly a blessing because I have improved so much from the beginning of the season to now than I have the last two years,” Guyton said.

Kurosky’s ‘quiet confidence’ Jenna Kurosky earned medalist honors at the Big Northern Conference girls meet Oct. 2, carding an 83 that marked her top round in four

conference meets at Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove.

The Burlington Central senior will aim to go considerably lower at today’s regionals. She knows the Sycamore Golf Club layout like the back roads that take her there from BC’s campus for practice rounds most days after school.

“It’s just a quiet confidence,” Kurosky said.

“They’re not concrete thoughts, they’re just in the back of my mind. I don’t really bring a lot of attention to it.”

She would rather credit an all-around game that shined throughout her round at Timber Pointe.

“My drives, they were definitely some of the best I had [last week], so that really helps,” Kurosky said. “My hybrids and irons were really good, so that helped a lot.”

Film ‘Jerusalem’ brings a new perspective on an ancient city

By JODY FEINBERG More Content Now Even if you’ve visited the Old City of Jerusalem, the IMAX film “Jerusalem” is likely to surprise you with its large format aerial views of holy sites and bustling quarters.

The filmmakers are among the few to receive permission to film in Jerusalem’s no-fly zone, an approval they received only after a year of effort.

“We worked hard to build up a rapport,” said director and filmmaker Daniel Ferguson, who filmed with a 15-perf 65mm camera mounted on a helicopter. “There was nothing that wasn’t complicated.”

The soaring vantage point reveals the density and the proximity of the city’s Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Armenian quarters, which are bounded by a 2.5mile wall and home to 40,000 people.

“I did not realize how close the areas were to each other, even though I lived there many years,” said Toby Liebowitz after viewing the film.

Over 5,000 years old, Jerusalem is a city unlike any other. It is the only place sacred to the three major monotheistic religions, whose members still gather and worship at its ancient sites.

In tackling a project that required 14 visits to Jerusalem over five years, Ferguson and his fellow film makers Taran Davies and George Duffield aimed to show audiences what unites, rather than divides, its residents.

Narrated by Benedict Cumberbach (from “Star Trek into Darkness” and PBS’s “Sherlock), the film focuses on three teenage girls – Muslim, Christian and Jewish – whose families have lived many generations in Jerusalem. Each feels profoundly connected to the city but go only to their own quarter and know little of each other. The film moves back and forth between the girls, which has the effect of bringing out both how much they have in common, despite their different experiences of the city.

And the film gives Jerusalem context within the geography and history of Israel, showing the Jordan River, Dead Sea, Masada, Mount of Olives and archaeological sites.

Still, the filmmakers know the limitations posed by a 45-minute IMAX film.

“I feel we have barely scratched the surface, but hopefully it will inspire people to think differently,” Ferguson said.

Along with the aerial views, the filmmakers also shot underground in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and inside archaeology digs.

And it offers a rare look into religious celebrations – Good Friday, Easter, Ramadan, and Passover – that fill the Old City with life. To set up the cranes, massive lighting

and other equipment, they had to secure permission from a multitude of governing, religious and military bodies.

Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the audience sees thousands of pilgrims holding candles during the Ceremony of Holy Fire, where worshipers hold torches and wait for the divine light to emerge from the tomb of Jesus. The narrow Old City streets are packed with Christians walking the Via Dolorosa and Muslims dancing after the Ramadan fast. Jews celebrate a Bar Mitzvah at the Western Wall, and Muslim men pray in the Al-Aqsa mosque.

“In other films you hear about conflict, but this was gentle and loving and hopeful,” Liebowitz said.

Dear Reader: “Superfood” isn’t a technical term; it’s shorthand for foods that can improve your health and prevent disease. I don’t much like the term, since it implies that some foods have magical powers that will keep you healthy regardless of what else you eat or do. But there are foods that do appear to confer more health benefits than others.

Together with Dr. Michelle Hauser, nutrition educator and clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School, I’ve compiled a list of 12 “superfoods.” Try to incorporate them into your diet: 1. Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids. These fats help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Try to eat salmon or another fatty fish twice a week.

2. Blueberries contain powerful antioxidants, which can help lower your risk of many diseases.

We single out blueberries, but eating a mixture of colorful berries is best.

3. Broccoli. Any cruciferous vegetable – Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage or kale – is a worthy dietary addition. These vegetables contain potent disease-fighting compounds.

6. Beans are an excellent source of folate, potassium, magnesium, iron, protein and fiber. If beans make you gassy, soak them before cooking, pour out the water they soaked in, and cook them in new water.

7. Walnuts. Nuts are loaded with healthy fat. As we’ve discussed before, not all fat in the diet is bad for us. Too much saturated fat and trans fat is bad for us, but polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are

generally good for us. Walnuts are also high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids and can quell inflammation. Other nuts also are healthy foods for the same reasons, but not quite as good as walnuts.

8. Oatmeal is high in fiber and can help lower cholesterol levels.

Choose steel-cut oatmeal, the least processed type.

9. Olive oil is high in healthy fats that reduce cholesterol, prevent blood from clotting too easily and may even control blood sugar.

10. All teas – black, white, green or oolong – are high in antioxidants. Drinking tea every day may help lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and dementia.

11. Quinoa (“keen-wa”) is a seed that’s used like a grain. It’s high in protein, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It’s also gluten-free.

12. Dark chocolate helps control cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Choose chocolate containing at least 70 percent cocoa.

When parents actively discuss the effects of illegal drugs and alcohol consumption with their children, the children are far more likely to stay away from them.

The results of a nationwide study of nearly 10,000 preteens, teens and parents by the nonprofit Partnership for a Drug-Free America, scream out at parents to play an active role in their children’s activities.

The study shows that, of the teens who said they learned nothing about the risks of drugs from their parents, 45 percent now smoke marijuana.

Drug use dropped to 33 percent among those who said they had learned “a little bit” about drug risks from their parents, and it went down to 26 percent among teens who had been properly warned about drugs.

Most parents surveyed thought they were doing an adequate job teaching about drug risks to their teens.

Almost all (98 percent) reported they had talked to their teens about drugs, but just 68 percent of the teens remembered any drug conversations, and only 27 percent found the discussions useful.

Researchers noted that the earlier a child learns about the negative effects of drugs and alcohol, the less chance he or she will get involved.

Open one diamond with three cards in the suit only with exactly 4-4-3-2 distribution.

South will lose two spades and one club, and might also concede a diamond. He has only nine top tricks: five hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. So, at first glance, it looks as though declarer needs the diamond finesse to win.

And many players would drive down that road, failing with this layout.

A better chauffeur first plays three rounds of clubs, giving the opponents the lead. If West takes the club trick, he is endplayed, forced either to lead a diamond into South’s tenace or to concede a ruff-and-sluff.

So let’s assume East overtakes West’s jack with his queen and shifts to a diamond. Declarer plays low. Here, West must put up his queen, so the contract is home. But if West could produce the 10, South still has the finesse of his jack available. He is home when East has either diamond honor.

Village adjusts workers’ health care benefits Facing a budget deficit as insurance costs rise, Elburn village officials on Monday night cut back on a benefit offered to village employees to make up the difference.

The village’s finance director, Doug Elder, told trustees at Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting that, because the Blue Cross premiums were to increase by 16.14 percent, the village would be $7,398 over budget without making an adjustment.

The village pays 100 percent of the premium for village employees and 50 percent of family members, and employees also receive money deposited into a “health savings account.”

The village has been depositing $1,500 into that account each year. To significantly diminish the budget deficit, Elder proposed cutting the village’s contribution to that account to $1,100 each year.

Other possible solutions included going to a higher deductible, paying less of the

Elder called the reduction in the “health savings account” to be the most workable.

“The only change would be reducing the village’s contribution to the HSA,” he said.

Village President Dave Anderson called that solution “fair and equitable.”

“We said when the program was established that there was no guarantee about the $1,500,” Anderson said.

Trustee Ken Anderson said that was a reasonable solution because the village already is generous in paying for full coverage.

“I don’t know too many employers that are paying 100 percent,” Ken Anderson said. “That’s the real world

now.”

Trash pickup exclusion A new Elburn resident’s quest to be excluded from services provided by Waste Management was granted at Monday’s meeting, but some village officials said there should be an effort to establish some sort of policy for the future.

Darren Stacy, who recently purchased a foreclosed home on Corrigan Street in the Blackberry Creek subdivision, balked at a past-due bill from Waste Management for $134.40. He said he never established service and had not had any trash to pick up. He said he’d be able to dispose of trash at his workplace and wouldn’t need Waste Management’s service.

Dave Anderson said it was the third time in the past few years that such a request had been made, and for Stacy’s request to be granted, village officials had to write a letter to Waste Management. Trustee Bill

Sugar Grove Pumpkin Farm open for business

Grove Pumpkin Farm, which is just east on Merrill, on the north side of the street.

Kaneville resident Ryan White, 26, and Sugar Grove resident John Nickels, 25, operate the stand, with pumpkins, gourds, broom corn and more available. It’s the fourth year White and Nickels have been running the stand.

“I just enjoy the aspect of agriculture, with pumpkins and produce,” White said. “We enjoy doing it. It’s better than going to work.”

White said the stand will be there through Halloween, from sunrise to sunset. He said there have been good crowds as “people are getting in the mood to put some decor out.”

Grabarek asked whether that could be a problem if such requests would be allowed for a greater number of residents.

Village Administrator Erin Willret said if that were to happen, it could become an issue with the contract with Waste Management.

Grabarek said he would want officials to create a policy for when building activity might grow in the village.

Trustee Ethan Hastert asked whether Willret could see how other municipalities handled such situations.

Dave Anderson said all three requests that had been made in recent years were unique. Trustees unanimously approved Stacy’s request.

“Motion carried,” Dave Anderson said. “We’ll write the letter.”

Education in Action Learning about the Daily 5

The students in Mrs. Yaggie’s Kindergarten class have been learning about the Daily 5 (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listening to Books, Word Work, Writing). The students will be rotating to different Daily 5 stations while Mrs. Yaggie is meeting with guided reading groups. Currently, the students are working on building their stamina and independence in these activities.

In mid-September, the Kindergarteners started practicing Read to Self. First, they had several conversations about being ready to learn, how to properly treat a book, and how to respect others while reading. The class created a chart of things they should be doing during Read to Self. Each day they would get out their reading binders which contain poems and books and find a spot to read. Some students are able to read, but other students are reading the pictures and/or word wall words that they have learned. Over the next several days, they would have a goal for how long to read. The class started by reading for 3 minutes. The time increased each day because the students were building their stamina!

Currently, they are able to read independently for 12 minutes with a goal of 20 minutes in reach!

Delia and Lucinda plan to sell Rainbow Loom bracelets at the John Stewart clothing, toy, and craft sale on October 4th and 5th. The girls will be making many of the bracelets themselves and are getting other John Stewart students involved. Delia and Lucinda have promoted their fund raiser at John Stewart and have asked other children to donate bracelets they have made to the sale. The goal of the fund raising efforts is to pay for 27 life-changing surgeries for kids in developing countries who need cleft lip/palate surgery.
