ARRINGTON – Rebecca Everly didn’t really know what to expect after her first cesarean section. She had planned on a vaginal delivery with her daughter, Penelope, but the baby was sideways and an emergency C-section was performed.

“It’s a long recovery,” Everly said. “I was hoping six to eight weeks to recover. Then I was at six weeks, going, ‘Come on. I can do it. I’m young. I’m athletic. I can recover faster.’ Twelve weeks later, I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m still not 100 percent.’ ” That’s why she would have preferred to go with a vaginal birth with her next child, a son.

“I think it’s best for the baby, and I think it’s an easier recovery as a mom,” Everly said. But with the due date just 15 months after the birth of Penelope, her doctor recommended another C-section. Many moms-to-be don’t know about the risks involved with cesarean sections, said Dr. David Crandall, an obste-

trician at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. “[When medically appropriate], I encourage them to do a vaginal delivery because then we don’t have go through a surgical procedure,” he said. “The recovery is easier, you get to go home sooner, and there are inherent risks to any surgery.”

C-sections

Total births include C-sections, VBACs and vaginal births for women with no history of C-sections.

VBAC stands for vaginal birth after cesarean section (the woman had a C-section with an earlier child but a vaginal birth for subsequent children).

Doctors and hospitals nationwide have tried to reduce the number of C-sections through improved perinatal care and educating patients.

HUNTLEY – The ongoing lawsuit over Centegra Health System’s $233 million Huntley hospital has delayed the much-anticipated October groundbreaking until this winter, giving Centegra’s competitors a short-term victory in their battle to halt the project. But the victory might not last long. Centegra will head back to Will County Circuit Court on Nov. 12 to hear Judge Bobbi Petrungaro’s final decision on the lawsuit initiated by competitors Mercy Health System, Advocate Health Care and Sherman Health. Centegra Chief Executive Mike Eesley and General Counsel Aaron Shepley both expressed confidence that the Huntley hospital project would withstand the legal challenge. With a final court date now known, Centegra pushed back its Oct. 23 groundbreaking to late December or early January as a precaution – months after the lawsuit would be put to rest, Eesley said.

Libya demands U.S. explain raid The ASSOCIATED PRESS A suspected Libyan al-Qaida figure nabbed by U.S. special forces in a dramatic operation in Tripoli was living freely in his homeland for the past two years, after a trajectory that took him to Sudan, Afghanistan and Iran, where he had been detained for years, his family said Sunday. The Libyan government bristled at the raid, asking Washington to explain the “kidnapping.” The swift Delta Force operation in the streets of the Libyan capital that seized the militant known as Abu Anas al-Libi was one of two
