DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Ending a violent cycle Police, nonprofits work together to halt domestic abuse

CRYSTAL LAKE – Sometimes the call for help comes in the middle of a shouting match and sometimes it comes through from the silence on the other end. Huntley Police Sgt. Linda Hooten said officers can never be sure what to expect on domestic disturbance calls, but their response must be more than that of someone only looking to enforce the law. Hooten, who also serves on the Family Violence Coordinating Council, said officers often walk into a hostile environment during domestic disputes, even from the victim, who may not want to see a significant other in trouble. But, Hooten said, it is important that victims know there are options other than remaining in an environment where abuse could escalate from verbal to physical and even become fatal. “From the outside, you can always see a clear solution,” she said. “But sometimes it’s difficult for the victim on the inside to see the light at the end of that tunnel.” With October marking the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month,

More enter ’14 County Board races D-3 GOP primary could be 5-way race for 2 seats By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com The Republican primary ballot for McHenry County Board District 3 could end up being a five-way race for two open seats. Attorney Sarah Jansen, who spent four years as an assistant McHenry County state’s attorney, announced last week that she would run for office. Nunda Precinct Committeeman James Becker also pulled a petition. District 3 includes all of Nunda Township, southeastern McHenry and northeastern Algonquin townships, including all or parts of Crystal Lake, McHenry, Bull Valley, Prairie Grove, Holiday Hills and Lakemoor. “I want to ensure McHenry County remains a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. Given recent events in Washington, it is clear we need good leaders who can work together in all levels of government. I know I am the right person for the job,” Jansen said in a news release.

On the ballot n All 12 County Board incumbents up for election next year. n Voters in House District 65 will elect a new representative. n Also up for election next year are all statewide constitutional offices, the U.S. Senate seat held by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, and all seats in the U.S. and state houses of representatives.

LOCALLY SPEAKING

WASHINGTON – A rare flash of bipartisanship Saturday served as a cruel tease to those hoping Congress is moving toward reopening the government and averting an unprecedented default on the federal debt in less than two weeks. Only two days after House Speaker John Boehner raised hopes by telling colleagues he won’t let the nation go into default, key members of both parties conceded that no one has presented a plausible plan for

MARENGO

FUTURE UP IN THE AIR FOR POOL The Marengo Park District is contemplating closing its pool to help save a budget drowning in outstanding debt. If the pool does close, the residents’ nearest public pool options would be Woodstock or Huntley. A Park District Board committee plans to discuss the pool closure during a meeting Wednesday evening. The board would look to make a final decision on the pool by year’s end. For more, see page B1.
