Chronicle welcomes high school columnists Thursday’s edition of the Kane County Chronicle featured a new columnist.

Kurt Zepeda, a St. Charles resident and senior at Marmion Academy in Aurora, is the author of the “Marmion’s Manly Man” column.

We’re excited to have Kurt writing for us about his high school experiences and other matters. If his first column is any indication, readers are in for a few good-natured laughs.

Kurt is one of two new high school writers replacing Geneva High School graduate Courtney Phelan, who wrote a weekly column for the Chronicle for nearly two years. (Hope college is going

8LOCAL BRIEFS Free holiday concert set Dec. 8 in Aurora AURORA – At 1 p.m. Dec. 8 the Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance and Director Gina Detienne will perform a concert of holiday songs and other classical favorites.

Admission to the concert is free. The concert will be at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 420 West Downer Place, Aurora.

The event will include holiday carols by the Youth Strings, and Vivaldi’s “Sinfonia in C” by the Academy Orchestra.

Antique store leases Erday’s building

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The building that housed the former Erday’s Men’s Clothing store, 10 N. Third St. in Geneva, was leased by America’s Treasures. It is expected to open in November.

Dagmar McGowan, America’s Treasures co-owner with her husband, Harold, said they lost their lease at their location, 34 S. Bennett St., Geneva, because the building was sold.

“Thank God Erday’s re-

tired so we have a place to go to,” McGowan said. “It’s really the only thing in Geneva big enough. Our store is 5,000 square feet, and Erday’s is 5,800 square feet and gave us a price we could afford.”

McGowan said the store has a sale of 10 percent to 50 percent off because they have to be out by Nov. 9.

“When we’ll open depends on how fast we can get a city move-in permit,” McGowan said.

America’s Treasures has been at its Bennett Street location for about 18 months.

Effort continues for disabled services referendum

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Show You Care Kane has formed a Community Leadership Team to encourage voters to approve a tax increase on the March 18, primary ballot to aid developmentally disabled Kane County residents.

Advocates have gathered more than 20,000 signatures to get the question on the spring ballot, and they said the effort now is seeking support.

Voters will be asked to support a 0.1 percent property tax levy increase for housing and other services

for developmentally disabled adults.

A Developmental Disabilities Services Board would administer the estimated $12 million in revenue the tax would raise to provide services.

John Knewitz of Burlington is one of 10 community leaders who will be available to speak to groups about the referendum.

Knewitz recently retired from St. Charles District 303, where he was director of special education.

Knewitz said schools serve students with disabilities, but not once they age out as adults at age 18 or 22.

ST. CHARLES – The parents who brought a lawsuit against St. Charles School District 303 over the reconfiguration of Davis and Richmond schools are appealing a judge’s refusal to undo the merger.

“We think the remedy’s incorrect,” Tim Dwyer, attorney for the parents, said Friday.

Dwyer said his clients want Davis and Richmond to return as they were before District 303 converted them in 2011 into K-2 and 3-5 schools, respectively.

Kane County Circuit Judge David R. Akemann rejected that request in a Sept. 18 ruling. Instead, he ordered District 303 to “perform its mandated functions” in crafting a school improvement plan for Richmond and Davis students under the guidelines of No Child Left Behind.

A group of parents alleged District 303 circumvented No Child Left Behind regulations when it reconfigured the schools.

Akemann ruled in favor of the parents following a bench trial that was held in July.

District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said Friday that the parents’ decision to appeal was not completely

unexpected.

“While we regret that the district must continue to spend its time and resources defending itself on a matter that has been decided by the courts not once, but twice, we are preparing to defend the [school] board’s decision on appeal,” he said.

“Of course,” he added, “we will also take appropriate steps to ensure that the Appellate Court understands the full perspective of the issues and implications of the plaintiffs’ request.”

Since the case began, District 303 has incurred $316,945.49 in legal fees through Aug. 31, according to the district. Of that amount, the district reported, about $75,684 has been covered by insurance.

District spokesman Jim Blaney said in an email that legal fees can be paid by the education fund and the tort fund.

The 2013-14 budget includes $160,000 in the education fund and $25,000 in the tort fund for attorney’s fees, he said.

District 303 is working to develop implementation plans to present to the court for approval, Schlomann said.

He noted the plans include increased parental participation in school planning and additional support to underperforming students.

Parents appeal judge’s order in schools merger

Batavia street work will begin Monday KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Several streets will be resurfaced starting Monday as part of the city’s 2013 street program.

The contractor will begin work with curb/sidewalk removal and replacement on Millview Drive and Wind Energy Pass. Other streets to be done include portions of Blaine Street, Church Street, Kingsland Drive, Laurel Street, Prairie Street, Raddant Road and Swanson Drive.

There also will be pavement patching at various locations in the city.

The work will generally include curb repairs, sidewalk repairs and a new asphalt overlay, according to a city of Batavia news release. The overall contract completion date is Nov. 15.

Orange parking passes have been provided to the residents who will not be able to park in their driveways because of the construction.

These residents will park overnight on the street in front of their home or on the adjacent side street during construction.

The parking passes detail the information regarding parking overnight.

There are no planned permanent road closures, but there will be times where roadways will be restricted to one lane, with flaggers directing traffic.

Northern water snakes, by contrast, can be found statewide and are particularly at home in the Fox River Valley. Our numerous rocky-banked streams and ponds offer a near-perfect habitat for basking; meanwhile food, even in nondrought years, is ample.

Fishermen sometimes slander this snake, protesting that it reduces fish populations. But this belief, too, is inaccurate. Healthy gamefish are too large, fast and strong for a water snake to capture.

Instead, this snake feasts on sick and weak individuals, a practice that actually improves the health of fish populations.

Water snakes have a few other habits that have not endeared them to the public: If harassed, they bite. Repeatedly. They release a strong musk. Effortlessly. They void feces. Copiously. And if disturbed just after a meal, they often regurgitate. And that’s just gross.

But if you leave them alone, they’ll return the favor.

Younger northern water snakes are identified by a unique set of markings. The brown bands at the snake’s neck become blotches along the back. Underneath, the snake’s belly is light colored and usually is flecked with red or brown half-moon shaped spots.

But just as humans change with age, so do snakes. Older individuals may darken considerably, to the point of appearing almost black ... like a cottonmouth ... but they’re not.

Sunday’s cool temperatures may send the snakes, and the humans who watch them, heading under cover.

But we could have another warm spell or two before winter sets in. Should you venture out along the Fox and

The water snakes are everywhere!

OK, maybe “everywhere” is an exaggeration. But “everywhere there’s water” isn’t.

Nerodia sipedon, the northern water snake, has been particularly prevalent this fall, with people up and down the Fox River (and its tributaries) reporting sightings of this medium-sized, blotchy-brown snake. I’ve been asked, by snake lovers and ophidiophobes alike, “What’s up with water snakes?”

It’s hard to say for sure, but several factors may have contributed to the species’ apparent increase in numbers.

It could be because of last year’s drought, which stranded lots of fish; that in turn made for an abundant supply of food for these piscivorous snakes. Or maybe, because of those plentiful pickings, the herons, egrets and other consumers ate more fish and fewer snakes.

Then again, our reptile friends simply might have been out, taking advantage of some late-season warmth before heading to their winter hibernacula, while people, doing the same thing, just happened to notice.

Whatever the reason, the snakes’ presence caused a bit of a stir. There’s something about dark, heavy-bodied snakes in or near water that really grabs people’s attention. Sipedon’s distinctive brown bands and blotches immediately distinguish it from another common snake, the garter, but also cause its fair share of trouble.

Many people, noting the snake’s thick body and aquatic nature, immediately assume it to be a venomous cottonmouth. Thankfully, the folks I talked to were relieved to hear our snakes are nonvenomous and let the issue drop. But I’ve heard about other people who, citing the old adage that “the only good snake is a dead snake,” quickly dispatch the unfortunate critter, usually with a shovel or rock to the head.

Now, the 31-year-old has his own produce stand, along with a 25-acre farm. Muetze and his wife, Brandi, have acquired the farm at 39W100 Main St., near Batavia, renaming it Poplar Acres.

He is the third generation to run the farm. His dad and grandfather started it as a hog farm.

The produce stand previously was located down the road, where Marklund’s facility in Mill Creek subdivision is now located. The couple acquired the property last winter, and this is Poplar Acres’ first season.

Poplar Acres operates a self-serve produce stand that is open 24 hours.

“We wanted to be a local family farm and be accessible to the community,” she said. “It’s been pretty successful.”

Poplar Acres’ Fall Fest began in September and runs through Nov. 3. The fest offers several attractions, including two corn mazes, miniature train rides, a farm animal birthing barn, a kids play area and a giant

slide.

Admission is $10 per person, and those ages 2 and under are admitted free.

The Muetzes live on the farm with their four young daughters. James Muetze said he has enjoyed introducing his family to the life that he grew up with.

That includes his wife, who admitted she didn’t think she ever would live on a farm.

“It keeps me on my toes,” Brandi Muetze said.

About 100 free-range chickens roam around the property.

“It’s relaxing to watch them do their thing, to roam around and be chickens,” she said.

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Harry E. Beresford, 73, of Valparaiso, Ind., passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the VNA Hospice Center.

He was born April 7, 1940, in Aurora, the son of Frank Robert and Elvyn (Tinder) Beresford. Harry was a retired Air Force and Marine Corps veteran and a security supervisor.

Surviving are his children, David Beresford of DeKalb, Steven Beresford of Valparaiso, Ind., and Kyla (David) Beresford-Studer of South Bend, Ind.; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Beverly Runkle of Aurora.

He is survived by his wife, Celine; seven children, Michael (Carol) Boscaccy, Martin Boscaccy, Celine (John) Fox, Blaise (Debbie) Boscaccy, Jerry Boscaccy, Mary Rose (James) Krater and Antonia (Larry) Kramer; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Before opening her practice in St. Charles, Adamaitis said she provided therapy part-time from her house and worked full-time as a social worker for Veterans Affairs in Chicago.

Her work as a cardiac rehabilitation exercise physiologist initially led her to counseling, she said, noting it’s her passion.

“I absolutely love it,” Adamaitis said. “You touch their lives, and at the same time they’re touching my life.”

The Cedar Avenue Business Center on the outskirts of downtown will fit that bill.

The available first-floor suite would be convenient for patients with physical disabilities, she said, and the site’s low foot traffic likely would make her clients feel more relaxed than a busy medical office would.

“I really fell in love with the building,” she said.

After some minor renovations and decorating – installing a wall to create more intimacy and furnishing the space with a sofa, chairs, curtains and a fireplace – Adamaitis opened PMA Counseling in July, she said.

Healing Field display to honor veterans

The problem, Deagle said, a health insurance broker and owner of Batavia-based Deagle Benefit Group, comes in the many other ways health insurance policies are changing next year.

“The premiums have not been as crazy as I’d feared,” Deagle said. “But while the prices might seem OK, there are other things to watch out for.”

The so-called health insurance marketplaces opened Tuesday, allowing Americans who will be required to purchase health insurance next year to explore their options

under the Affordable Care Act. The electronic marketplaces have opened to conflicting reviews, with government officials and ACA supporters cheering “high demand” and Obamacare critics lamenting glitches and low service levels.

Deagle, president of the Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters, said the “actual process has been slow” so far. To that end, he is advising clients to wait “a couple of weeks, until things die down.”

But unless someone wants to qualify for a subsidy or tax credit to offset their costs, they should avoid the government marketplaces and head to the private market, he said.

Deagle said the choice of plans is greater outside the government marketplaces.

However, no matter the plan,

Deagle said individuals and small employers should examine the plans carefully.

While premiums may appear reasonable, he said deductibles and out-of-pocket costs may have been increased sharply.

He noted that an individual plan he examined increased the maximum out-of-pocket cost from $5,200 a year to $12,700.

Additionally, Deagle said those purchasing insurance should look at other terms.

For instance, he noted that, to hold costs down, some insurers have trimmed the size of their provider networks.

Many who obtain health insurance through employers likely will see little change in their coverage.

The store ... removed the decoration, as not being in the right celebration for homecoming. Now, the coffee shop and its parent organization are in trouble with the group that painted the window.

What right does any group have in decorating a homecoming window and placing their advertising within the decoration?

Marcia Boyce, owner of Boyce Body Werks in Batavia, said her costs will rise by 32 percent next year, if she re-enrolls now. That followed a 33 percent increase earlier this year.

While she had intended to provide health insurance to her workers, she said now she may just follow the lead of many other employers, large and small, across the country, and offer her employees stipends to purchase individual coverage in the ACA marketplaces.

“It’s very discouraging,” Boyce said. “I wish I didn’t have to, but rates have increased so drastically, I’m just going to have to gamble and see what happens when my plan comes up for renewal in March.”

Whoever called about the “Have a nice day” item in last week’s Sound Off must have the same postal man that I do.

He never says anything. In addition to not speaking, which I can understand, he leaves the mail from the people behind me in my box. And he takes my mail somewhere else down the block.

It’s gotten to the point where I can’t put anything in my box because I don’t know where it’s going to be.

It might end up in someone else’s yard. I’ve complained; we’ve all complained; and we were told hang tight; he’s going to retire.

But this has been going on for years.

We’re all going to retire sometime, but there should be something that can be said about the postal service not doing what they should be doing.

It was about the only time the Vikings held their cards in a 35-21 victory. A consistenly effective offense outpaced the Saints’ late surge, helping Geneva (4-2, 3-1 UEC River) take sole possession of second place in the league standings.

“It was just really good communication this week,” Vikings junior center Joey Wagner said.

“We knew what we were supposed to do, and it was just a matter of execution, and I think we came out and we did that. We performed well, and it was a lot of teamwork.”

East backup quarterback

Mitch Dupuis’ fourth-down pass from the Geneva 9 fell incomplete with 3:53 to go, enabling the Vikings’ defense to exhale one last time.

Entering the game midway through the fourth quarter despite no apparent injury to starter Jimmy Mitchell – “I decline comment on my quarterback change,” Saints coach Mike Fields said – Dupuis kept the Saints (4-2, 2-1) afloat.

Still, pressure up front from a group including Geneva’s Billy Douds, Stephen Kemp and Matthew Loberg ultimately took its toll no matter which East player was under center.

We have big guys and we have speed,” Douds said. “We saw them running a lot on first down, and when they passed on second, third or fourth down, we pinned back our ears.”

Geneva gained 267 yards on 43 plays and possessed the ball for the majority of the first two quarters, but only had a 21-14 halftime lead to show for it.

As a capacity homecoming crowd thirsted for a three-possession edge in the waning minutes, the game hinged on one of the lone plays in which the Vikings didn’t execute.

With Geneva ahead, 21-7, and the ball on the Saints 19, the Vikings turned the ball over on downs when Daniel Santacaterina’s 5-yard pass to Miller was

four yards shy of the first down.

East took over on its own 14 with little time – 1:09 – and even less momentum.

East offensive coordinator Shaun Ratay, a former Geneva quarterback, didn’t shy away from the aerial attack. Gaudy gains to A.J. Washington (49 yards) and Mitch Munroe (46) bookended Loberg’s sack of Mitchell, quickly putting East at the Geneva 8.

A fourth-down pass interference call against Geneva gave the Saints one last chance to avoid stalling the drive, and they cashed in on a trick play as time expired on the half.

With Mitchell casually going in motion to the left, running back Ramon Lopez took a direct snap and flipped the ball back to Mitchell, who avoided the congestion and raced in for the touchdown.

The lateral – not the call itself – was improvised.

“Busted play. That’s just

a couple of kids being kids and just having some fun out there,” Fields said. “I will give Jimmy some credit; he told Ramon, ‘Hey, you know, if you get stopped, I’m going to trail you.’

But we certainly didn’t draw that up. Just one of those plays, and we’ll take it.”

With apologies to the halftime fireworks show, the Vikings arguably delivered the night’s most eye-popping sequence on their third straight scoring drive to open the game.

Facing a 3rd and 18 from his own 35, Santacaterina scrambled, eluded pressure from two Saints defenders, scrambled some more, and lofted a pass near midfield.

Pace Temple settled under the ball, secured it and juked his way for a 43-yard gain.

Santacaterina finished with 243 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Mitchell passed for 245 yards and one score.

Vikings make huge mid-season strides PREP ZONE Jay Schwab GENEVA – After starting the season 1-2 and with some challenging conference games left to go, Geneva football coach Rob Wicinski acknowledged he would have been OK with a 5-4 record and squeaking into the playoffs.

That was three weeks ago, but it sure feels a lot longer the way the Vikings are playing now. These days, Geneva looks like a team that not only can qualify for the playoffs, but win once they get there.

Friday’s 35-21 win against St. Charles East gave the Vikings their third straight win and offered another 48 minutes of evidence that back-to-back, lopsided home losses to Wheaton North and Batavia only toughened up the Vikings for the stretch run.

Let there be no doubt, Geneva is headed back to a customary playoff berth after a one-year blip last year. The Vikings (4-2, 3-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) have a realistic chance to finish the regular season on a six-game winning streak, with only UEC crossover foe Metea Valley standing as a legitimate obstacle in the final three weeks.

Offensively, the Vikings are flourishing, proving they can click through the air and on the ground, with improved line-play factoring in heavily on both accounts.

The offensive line’s emergence is all the more impressive considering the Vikings lost starting guard Quinn Einck to an ACL tear in the North game.

“We kind of challenged the line, if we’re going to make a run here, we need you guys now,” Wicinski said. “I

think we did see some of that.

I think they made strides, even since last week [against North].”

On a night when senior running back T.J. Miller rushed for four touchdowns, the Vikings’ three-headed receiving monster of Pace Temple, Kyle Brown and Michael Landi continued to make big plays all over the turf, too, capitalizing on quality QB play from Daniel Santacaterina. “[Defenses] definitely lock down on Kyle sometimes, and still can’t really stop him,” Landi said. “But they try to,

and that leaves the rest of us open, and when we’re open, I don’t think they really know what to do.”

The homecoming crowd at Burgess Field was treated to fireworks at halftime Friday night, but that must have seemed like a bore compared to what they witnessed in the opening half.

Geneva led 21-14 at the break after East (4-2, 2-1) scored on a memorable play to close the half. Running back Ramon Lopez took a direct snap, then seemed to be wrapped up by the Vikings’ defense before flipping the

ball just in time to quarterback Jimmy Mitchell, who scampered in for the 4-yard TD to give the Saints new life.

That play was one of only a handful that made Wicinski cringe on the night.

“I tell you, [the Vikings defenders] better get in the weight room because that kid should have been down,” Wicinski said. “But he stood up and he held there and then he pitched it away. We need to make that play.”

Earlier in the first half, both teams managed touchdowns on fourth-and-goal plays, and Temple made a terrific play on a deep floater, barely beating East safety Brannon Barry to the ball before scampering upfield for a big gain.

Making the theatrics all the more enjoyable, the game mattered greatly to both teams. East entered play hoping to remain unbeaten in UEC River play with a showdown against Batavia two weeks way, while Geneva was not even assured of a playoff bid if it lost to the Saints.

Instead, it looks like earning a home playoff game should be the team’s goal for the rest of October. And enjoying some success in November is beginning to look well within the VIkings’ capabilities.

As if two touchdowns in 21 seconds wasn’t good enough, the North Stars eventually scored a pair in 10 seconds.

Carson Schmitt returned an

interception 40 yards for a touchdown with 57 seconds left before halftime to make it 35-6 going into the break.

The North Stars scored again less than two minutes into the second half on a 22yard scramble by Didier.

“That was a pass play,” Didier said. “The pressure came and my instinct just told me to tuck it and go.”

Edlund scored his second touchdown from a yard out midway through the quarter and Tyler Bell returned another interception 67 yards for a

touchdown in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring.

“It was deflected by a linebacker and I just made a play on it and went for a touchdown,” Bell said.

Pomazak said Kurtz, recovering from a shoulder injury, could have played against the Sabres, but was held out of the game because he missed the first three practices of the week. He’s expected to be ready next week when the North Stars host Batavia. Miller suffered a concussion in last week’s Geneva game.

ST. CHARLES – Missing quarterback Erik Miller and leading rusher Evan Kurtz, St. Charles North didn’t miss a beat Friday night in a 55-6 pasting of Streamwood.

“We kind of looked at this week as an opportunity for guys to step up into a leadership role,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “My hats off to Nathan Didier, Nick Edlund and Dom Sidari, the sophomore. I really thought they took advantage of the opportunity.”

Filling in for Miller at quarterback, Didier connected on his first five pass attempts, including a pair of touchdowns to Dylan Hunter and Garrett Johnson.

“It really felt good,” Didier said. “We came out strong.

That’s been our weakness in a couple games, so it was good to have that confidence from everybody.”

With Edlund (15 carries, 121 yards) chewing up big chunks of yardage on the ground, the North Stars (3-3, 2-2 UEC River) drove 95 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening possession. The 10-play drive ended with Edlund plunging in from the 1.

It would take North just 21

seconds to score again. Quarterback Mason Polich fumbled on Streamwood’s first play from scrimmage and Jordan Bergren recovered for the North Stars at the Sabre 19.

On the next play, Didier hit Hunter over the middle. Hunter bobbled the ball momentarily, but latched onto it and then broke a tackle to reach the end zone.

StreamEvan Kurtz wood (0-6, 0-3) tried to make a game of it, putting together a 9-play, 54yard drive for a touchdown late in the first quarter to cut Erik Miller the North lead to 14-6. But Sidari began to make his presence felt in the second quarter, breaking off a pair of long runs over the left side to set up a 23-yard scoring strike from Didier to Johnson.

Sidari scored a touchdown with 1:07 left in the half from one yard out to extend the North lead to 28-6. Sidari gained 125 yards on 11 carries on the night.

David, Kaneland run over DeKalb

By LUKE SRODULSKI editorial@kcchronicle.com DeKALB – Even when his team was trying to run the clock, it seemed like Kaneland senior quarterback Drew David was running a hurry-up offense.

The high-powered Knight attack carried Kaneland (6-0, 2-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) to a 3512 victory at DeKalb (3-3, 0-2 NI Big 12 East) on Friday night. David Drew David led the way for the Knights with 397 total yards of offense and three touchdowns.

Junior running back Dre Brown led the Barbs with 130 yards on the ground.

“They’re undefeated for a reason,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said of Kaneland.

“They’re pretty big up front, which kind of hurt us a little bit, but I think the big thing for us was just not playing our game.”

Playing their game was a lot tougher against a team like Kaneland. The Knights’ spread offense seemed to catch the Barbs off guard, leading to touchdown passes of 31 and 58 yards from David early on.

Dre Brown broke free for an 89-yard score, giving the Barbs a bit of momentum.

But the comeback was effectively ended on a fumble recovered by Kaneland. The Knights drove down to score after the turnover, and David scored one more touchdown to seal the victory.

The win keeps Kaneland undefeated going into next week’s matchup against Yorkville, while DeKalb remains winless in conference.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BENSENVILLE – Marmion boys golf coach Doug Roberts grinned about the Cadets’ positioning after Friday’s opening round of the Suburban Christian Conference tournament at White Pines.

He actually had been all smiles since earlier in the week, when a team meeting about a vanilla approach to the 36-hole event finally registered with players.

Irons off the tee and conservative fairway play might not sound juicy, but so far, those things have kept Marmion (309) on the trail of leader St. Francis (305) entering today’s final round.

“The kids said, ‘It’s not a whole lot of fun playing boring golf,’ ” Roberts chuckled, “’but it works.’ “ Joe Fritz’s three-over-par 73 paced the Cadets, and is one stroke behind individual leader Jonathan Nocek of St. Francis.

Wheaton Academy’s Grant Gosden also fired a 73.

“This is a good test to see what we’re made of,” Warriors coach Scott Broman said. “This is our first day of a stretch of two days and 36 holes, and we hope in a couple weeks we’re doing the same thing in Bloomington for the state tournament.”

With an eye toward next week’s regionals, Roberts plans to replace three seniors with sophomores Caleb Vest and Jackson Clark and junior Eli Grabowski today.

BOYS SOCCER Gateway City Classic: St. Charles East 3, Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Christian 2: At O’Fallon, Mo., East extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to 16 matches behind two goals from Zach Manibog and another tally from Christian Memije.

East scored the middle three goals of the match after yielding a goal about 10 minutes in. Capital Christian created the final margin on a free kick with two minutes to play.

“Probably our best game of the season,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said.

“That was a quality team today that was a completely different style than what we’re used to. … After the frustration of [Thursday] night and not being able to finish [in a scoreless tie] against Streamwood, for them to come out and win balls and give that kind of effort was outstanding.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BURLINGTON – The Burlington Central football team kept its playoff hopes alive by beating Marengo 27-0 Friday night at Rocket Hill.

The Rockets also got their offense back on track in the Big Northern Conference East Division contest.

Central exploded for a season high of 429 yards of total offense. Casey Matthews and Reilly Marino accounted for 303 of those yards. The team averaged only 211 yards in its first five games of the season.

Matthews, who played at tailback most of the night, totaled 177 yards on 14 carries, including two touchdown runs of 49 and 71 yards.

Marino ran 17 times for 136 yards and scored a TD on a 37-yard run.

“We move the ball better,” said Central coach Rich Crabel. “Some of that has to do with the fact that we played a team that wasn’t a lot bigger than us up front. We faired a little bit better than we have in the past few games.”

Quarterback Parth Patel lateraled to Matthews, who threw a 26-yard strike to Kyle Coffland. Patel completed 9 of 16 pass attempts for 96 yards.

Matthews’ 71-yard run seven minutes into the fourth quarter scored the final touchdown.

“Our linemen block great on that play,” said Matthews. “I was really impressed with them.”

The Rockets need to win their next three games to remain eligible for the postseason. Central travels to conference rival Richmond-Burton next Friday.

Rock Falls (home) and North Boone (away) will be the Rockets’ last two regular-season opponents.

“We can still be 5-4 and our points will probably be a little better than they were last year,” Crabel said about the Rockets’ playoff prospects.

“Next week will be as big test with Richmond, they got some very talented kids.”

Hurricanes stop Spartans short of win

By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The bus ride north from Wheaaton took a bit longer than expected for St. Francis, which arrived to Marian Central eight minutes after the 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff.

Imagine how long the bus ride home must have felt.

The Spartans erased a 15-point second half deficit against Marian Central, only to let the Hurricanes march down the field for a James Butler fourth-quarter score that proved to be the difference in a 34-28 win at George Harding Field.

The Spartans (3-3, 1-3) were stopped one yard short on a fourthdown attempt in the final two minutes as the Hurricanes (5-1, 3-1) held on for the win in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division matchup.

“Our kids fought really hard,” Purnell said. “I’m really proud of that fact. They never gave up. But you can’t give up three 50-yard touchdown passes and expect to win a game.”

The coach’s math was off, but he had the right idea.

Marian quarterback Billy Bahl connected on touchdowns of 47 yards to Jordan Niemeyer, 33 yards to Brett Olson and 20 yards to Tom Klinger as he picked apart the St. Francis secondary.

But it was Bahl’s 49-yard pass to Olson on the decisive drive that set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Chris Daniels.

By night’s end, Bahl had completed 15 of 24 passes for 277 yards and three scores. Five receivers

caught passes for the Hurricanes, with Olson leading the team with four catches for 113 yards.

Marian coach Ed Brucker said he was proud of his players for bouncing back after their 22-7 lead slipped away.

“They showed a little mental toughness, which we need,” Brucker said. “Maybe that was good for us in the long run.”

Meanwhie, St. Francis leaned heavily on running back James Butler, who ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Butler also showed off his arm on a trick play, connecting with Matthew Hanson on a 70-yard halfback pass for a touchdown.

Yet a slow start in the first half – Butler had only nine rushing yards at the break – and a few defensive lapses ultimately cost the Spartans the game. Purnell said his team needed to improve its pass rush and coverage on defense and could not afford to sputter early on offense.

“If we get those things corrected,” Purnell said, “we’re going to be OK.”

With being the only fouryear varsity player on the team, how much leadership responsibility comes along with that?

A good amount. I’m actually captain of the varsity

team this year, so that’s a little different for me. I definitely have to set good examples for the other girls on the team, especially the younger ones, like the freshmen. I try to just be a good role model and help with the technical aspects of tennis but also the aspects of just being confident in how you play and just good sportsmanship, stuff like that.

What kinds of questions do some of the younger girls come to you with?

One of them actually asked me the other day how I get so much power on half of my shots. She’s a really cute, little freshman. I just told her that it honestly just comes with experience and playing a lot. Just little ques-

Well, I’ve played 2 singles – last time I played that [regularly] was my freshman year. So playing 2 for me is kind of second nature. … I usually have competition that’s similar to me at that spot. But then when I go to 1, it’s pretty nerve-racking because I play girls that are super talented. They’re just really good. I’ve won a few times at 1, so that’s really exciting to know you’re winning at a level such as that. And then I played third singles against East High School and I won, and that was different for me because I’ve never played third any of my years.

What parts of a tennis match do you find most pressure-packed?

I always get under the most pressure when it’s deuce, their advantage, and you have to serve it, second serve. That’s always super nerve-racking because that can just give the game away or end the set.

What do you want to get out of these last few weeks?

I just want to have fun with it because it is my last time but I also want to get a lot of good playing in because I personally want to play in college. So I think just having that competitive experience for the rest of the few weeks, for sectionals and conference, will be good for me.

Carey: Statistics don’t tell whole story about Kent St.

Northern Illinois’ coach thinks they can tell the truth as well, but in the case of Kent State, the stats don’t add up for him.

The Golden Flashes record is just 2-3. However, Carey feels Kent State’s mark isn’t indicative of this year’s team, a squad which has played at No. 10 LSU and Penn State, and has took on Bowling Green, arguably the favorite in the MAC East.

“You want to know how stats lie? Here’s how stats lie. So, you look at their stats and someone told me they’re averaging like 16 points [16.8 to be exact] a game and 150 or so yards rushing a game [The Flashes average 139],” Carey said. “Well, you look at last week versus Western Michigan, I think they ran for almost 300 yards [276], they scored 32 points, and I think they were outrageous on third down [9 of 16].

“They’re really good, and they’ve proven it. Yeah, I think [the record] is very misleading.”

One reason the Golden

Flashes’ record could be misleading is Kent State RB/ WR Dri Archer, who injured his ankle against Liberty in the opening week before returning last week. In the win over the Broncos, Archer ran for 73 yards on six carries, and caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Carey called Archer probably the fastest player he’s seen on film, and another challenge the senior brings is where he lines up. His No. 1 uniform will be in the backfield and out wide Saturday at Dix Stadium, where fans have been encouraged to wear gold as part of a “gold out.”

“I think we have to be pointing him out the whole time,” NIU linebacker Michael Santacaterina said.

“Every time he comes out we’re going to say ‘No. 1, No. 1’ and wherever he is lined up, whether it’s in the backfield or in the slot, it’s all about the scheme and how we’re going to defend it.”

Archer’s return could mean bad news for a Huskie defense that is giving up 169.3 rushing yards a game and is ranked 78th in the nation.

Kent State’s other main back, Trayion Durham, has 344 yards for a 4.0 yards a carry.

Wolfe, who entered play Friday with a 14-9 record, mostly at No. 1 or No. 2 singles, is in the late stages of her North Stars career, but hopes to play college tennis. When they finally caught a crayfish in the Fox River last Friday morning, the boys in one of my rotations cheered.

“I’m pumped,” Brendan said, as they worked together to gently place the crayfish into their specimen tray. “I’m motivated. All right guys, let’s go,” he added, as they ventured back into the river to search for more crayfish and “BMI” (benthic microinvertebrates).

Brendan wasn’t the only seventh-grader from Rotolo Middle School in Batavia who was hooked. Will was, too.

“This is intense. Now I want to do this on my own time,” he volunteered, as the boys decided where the net should be positioned in order for more organisms to be collected and studied.

His own time! Did you hear that? Will said he wants to do this wade-into-theriver-and-see-what-you-can-see-and-feel and-find thing on his own time.

And Brendan said that he was “motivated” by this experience.

This field trip to Glenwood Park, where Rotolo students got to study the river and its inhabitants, really inspired these kids. Seeing and sensing this excitement is why I will never tire of chaperoning. And this particular trip, of all of the school field trips for which I’ve been fortunate enough to tag along, is easily the one that yields the most “aha!” moments, in my humble opinion. Besides wading into the river to find and identify various critters, the students participated in four other activities that morning, too, including a water chemistry lab, leaf identification, a team-building exercise and a “trust walk.” There’s just something magical about standing knee-deep in the river with a bunch of kids as the warm sun peeks through the trees and

I’m lucky I got to go on this trip at all.

You may recall that a few years ago, when it was Noah’s turn to go on this particular field trip with Ms. Buckley (one of my kids’ favorite, truly-stokedabout-science-and-kids teachers), that

I was given strict instructions to stay home. Yes, Noah wanted to be a free agent that day. I totally get it. But this time was different.

“You can go if you want,” Holly casually volunteered a few weeks ago as she emptied the contents of her school backpack onto the kitchen island and came up with the green permission slip.

“I can?” I asked. I clapped my hands like a kid in a candy store.

And then I edited the permission slip. “‘I’ have Holly’s permission to chaperone,” I wrote, after I crossed off a few words. Because, as you know if you’ve ever parented a middle-schooler, that’s

how it is. And how it should be.

Then I borrowed a pair of rubber knee boots from my friend Lucy. She thought that perhaps the left one had a slight leak. She was right. But that didn’t dampen my enthusiasm.

“There’s nothing here,” one of the boys said, as he searched through a clump of river weeds that had drifted into our net.

“Nothing?” I replied, as I picked up a leech and then raked my hand through more river weeds. I couldn’t help but be reminded of that Dr. Seuss classic, the one about the young elephant with the huge heart with room for even the tiniest of creatures. I couldn’t remember the title, but Mikey came up with it. “‘Horton Hears a Who!’” he said.

Yes, that’s it. What a beautiful story.

Josh, a boy in one of my last groups, found a cool fossil on one of the rocks he found scattered along the shoreline.

I’ve never seen such a big smile. I suspect this doesn’t apply to him, but some of these kids had never been encouraged to do such a thing. For many, it was their first time near, let alone in, a river. For some, it was a big step. I’ll never tire of watching a reluctant or anxious child’s face light up after being quietly encouraged to try something new.

As Dr. Seuss posited, in another one of his famous books of the same title, “Oh, the places you’ll go!” Who knows the places these kids will go, simply because they got a chance to get their feet wet? I get chills just thinking about it. The possibilities are endless.

Learning to Grow: Curb appeal vs. curb clutter

One of my favorite fall activities is taking a hike around my neighborhood. I like to see, and enjoy, my neighbors’ landscapes. This is a good time to get ideas for refreshing one’s own garden.

Perhaps you need to update your landscape, add a new garden bed, plant a tree or remove overgrown plants and shrubs.

Realtors emphasize curb appeal when we get ready to sell our homes. We really need to be aware of our curb appeal long before we plan to exit the neighborhood. Each season we should take the time to view our home from our neighbors’ yards. How do things look? Are there unsightly weeds? Do your bushes need to be pruned? Are the branches of your trees infringing on your neighbor’s property?

Ben Affleck comes up aces in ‘Runner Runner’

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now Screenwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien came up aces with “Rounders,” the 1998 Matt Damon poker film that folded at the box office but came up a winner on DVD. With “Runner Runner,” the writing duo takes another turn at the table, dealing out a gambling-themed pic starring Damon’s best bud, Ben Affleck, as an online gaming mogul. And while Affleck is terrific in a cookie-cutter role, the rest of the film isn’t so good.

He’s Ivan Block, the sexy, shady hustler of the high-stakes online gaming site Midnight Black. It runs out of Costa Rica, a paradise where every day is filled with beautiful women, lavish parties and luxury yachts with names like “The House.” Get it? As in “the house” always wins. Where have I heard that before?

Affleck is so charismatic, though, you’re willing to tag along until it becomes clear Koppelman and Levien

are just shuffling a deck of cliches. They also do a lot of double-dealing, stealing liberally from their “Rounders” script, with Justin Timberlake taking over the Damon role (unconvincingly) as the naive babe in the woods. He’s Richie Furst, a financial whiz kid determined to take down the arrogant Block.

When we first meet Riche, he’s struggling to pay his Princeton tuition, so he turns to online poker. After he’s defrauded out of $17,000, Richie flies to Costa Rica to infiltrate Ivan’s inner circle.

In the turn of a card, Richie lands a meeting with the well-insulated gaming kingpin (there’d be no movie otherwise) and gets more than he bargained for.

He becomes Ivan’s right-hand man. Seduced by a seven-figure salary, Richie goes all-in. Double-crosses, jealousy and an FBI racketeering investigation ensue.

Also added to the ante are the pat love triangle between Richie, Ivan and Rebecca (Gemma Arterton), not to mention an emotionally manipulative

subplot involving Richie’s degenerate gambler father (John Heard).

With a such a weak story, director Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) gives “Runner Runner” (the title comes from a rare Texas Hold’ em hand) a very technical (read: boring) peak into the $30 billion a year online-gambling industry.

If you’re not already clued into this world, then all the jargon – “He was folding while I was trapping” – will likely be confusing. When that gets too much, Furman relies on filling his scenes with eye candy – cars, clothes, women and relying on pulsating electronic dance music to make the movie appear hip, if nothing else.

The stakes in online gambling are certainly high, but the movie is really no big deal.

• “Runner Runner” is rated R for language and some sexual content. The cast includes Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Gemma Arterton. Grade: C+

Juicing is not all it’s cracked up to be Dear Doctor K: Are the benefits of juicing as great as I’ve heard?

Dear Reader: Juicing – extracting the juice from fresh fruits and vegetables – appears to be the latest trend for anyone looking to detoxify, lose weight or just get healthy. But does research support the claims that juicing can reverse chronic disease, jumpstart weight loss and “detox” the body?

First, let’s discuss “extreme juicing.” To cut to the chase, I don’t know of any evidence that justifies a juice cleanse or a fast in which a person drinks only juice for several days to months. Particularly if you do it for more than a few days, you could be getting insufficient amounts of protein and other nutrients.

Now let’s talk about juice. A juicing machine removes the pulp of fresh fruit and vegetables and extracts the juice. Fresh juice has been shown to have advantages over commercially packaged juice – even those that claim to be “all natural” or have no added sugars. So, if you’re going to juice, it’s best to prepare juice at home, from fresh fruits and vegetables.

You can safely store fresh juice up to 24 hours in an airtight container in the refrigerator, but it’s best to drink the juice immedi-

Fruit and vegetable juices certainly have some possible health benefits. For example: • Kale juice may improve cholesterol levels.

• Tomato juice contains plenty of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may lower cancer risk.

• Citrus-based juices and carrot juice may reduce heart disease risk.

But juicing removes the skin and insoluble fiber from fruits and vegetables. Consider this: • The vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content of a whole fruit, like an apple, is decreased significantly when you peel the skin.

• Insoluble fiber can promote bowel regularity, lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugars and promote a sense of fullness. But insoluble fiber is lost in the juicing process.

• Drinking too much juice may cause weight gain.

• Excessive juice intake can be dangerous for people with diabe-

tes because juice is a concentrated source of calories, primarily sugar.

A few words about detoxifying: What “toxins” are supposedly being removed from your body? How is juicing supposed to remove them? What’s the evidence that it works? None of the websites advocating juicing that I’ve visited answer these questions.

Suppose a person has lead poisoning. I can’t imagine how that toxin, or any other heavy metal, would be removed from the body by juicing. Or when advocates talk about “detoxifying,” do they mean that the treatment washes “bad bacteria” out of the gut? There surely can be bad gut bacteria, but what’s the evidence that juicing eliminates them?

I have nothing against drinking freshly prepared juice from vegetables or fruits as part of a healthy diet. However, I think it would be better for your health to eat lots of fruits and vegetables every day – unjuiced.

to live with her father Dr. Wallace: My parents just went through a very bitter divorce. My parents hate each other. I’m 15, and this total and final separation really tore me apart. I love both of my parents, but I am especially fond of my dad. We are closer than close.

Dear Abby: I’m a single mother.

My two sons are practically grown and out of the house. I haven’t dated much over the years, but there was one man I did bond with and cared very much for at one point.

When you have a long, strong suit that is not completely solid, do not immediately assume it must be trumps. Maybe partner has some length that makes a different suit a better choice.

In this deal, North immediately imagines that six or seven hearts will be right, depending on whether partner has the club ace or not. And some players would open four no-trump to find that out immediately. Here, North would end in seven hearts.

But what opening lead defeats that contract?

A more circumspect North opens two clubs and rebids two hearts over South’s two-diamond negative reply. Then, when South rebids two spades, which guarantees at least a five-card suit and some values, North sees that spades look better than hearts. He launches into Blackwood before bidding seven spades.

West leads the club king against the spade grand slam.

South wins with his ace and, believing that there are no problems, plays a spade to dummy’s queen. When East discards a club (not a diamond!), South has to rethink. How should he continue?

South must get back to his hand to finesse West out of the spade jack. Declarer cashes dummy’s heart ace, ruffs a heart in his hand, leads a spade to dummy’s 10, draws West’s last two trumps, and claims.

Note that a club lead defeats seven hearts, removing the key entry to the South hand. Yes, that would be unlucky, but remember also that a 4-1 heart break, which would defeat that grand slam but might not stop seven spades, has a 28 percent probability.
