CASA volunteers honored as ‘superheroes’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – CASA Kane County relies on its 250 volunteers to help ensure that the children they serve will have a bright future.

CASA volunteers were thanked for the work they do Thursday during CASA Kane County’s third annual Super Heroes Breakfast at Piper’s Banquets in Aurora.

A Court Appointed Special Advocate is a trained volunteer who is appointed by the court to represent the best interests of an abused or neglected child.

“The CASA volunteers are our superheroes,” Executive Director Gloria Bunce told the audience of about 350 people, which included CASA volunteers. “Every child needs and deserves that hope for the future.”

St. Charles police warn of scam KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is warning residents not to share personal information to people purporting to be from Microsoft, according to a news release.

Residents reportedly told police that men and women claiming to represent Microsoft have called them several times during the last week.

Speaking with strong foreign accents, the callers attempted to help fix a problem with the residents’ home computers and laptops, police said.

Police said this is a com-

mon scam, and that the offenders are trying to gain the residents’ trust.

Police recommend residents hang up if they receive such a call because these outcomes might occur: • Malicious software can be installed on your computer that can be used to gather personal information.

• The scammers can take control of your computer remotely, allowing them to change privacy settings and leaving your computer vulnerable.

• Scammers might ask for credit card information to bill you for phony services.

• You could be directed

to fraudulent websites that might ask for your credit card or other personal information.

Microsoft and similar companies do not make unsolicited phone calls, police said.

If you believe you are a victim of a scam and might have shared personal information – such as your Social Security number or credit card information – call your credit card companies and the three credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax.

You might be required to file a police report, which can be done at the St. Charles Police Department in downtown St. Charles.

“When you take that child by the hand and help them find their place in life, you are making a difference, you are giving a child an opportunity and access to success,” Rowell said.

She spoke about the foster care system and how one of her foster mothers, Agatha Armstead, got her involved in ballet at a young age.

“She knew that I needed some kind of dance lesson,” Rowell said. “She taught me classical ballet out of a book.”

Man pleads guilty in burglary spree

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – One of four people charged in several residential burglaries that occurred in August on the city’s far southeast side received 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to possession of a stolen credit or debit card.

Gregory Jordan Jr., 26, of Batavia, was charged with

two felony counts of unlawful use of a credit card.

In addition to receiving probation, Jordan also spent 45 days in jail and was fined $1,318, accordi n g t o K a n e Gregory County court Jordan Jr. records.

Jordan pleaded guilty Sept. 27.

The burglaries occurred between Aug. 5 and Aug. 14.

The arrests are related to three residential burglaries that occurred in the 900 to 1200 blocks of Woodland Hills Road and in the 1600 block of Wagner Road in Batavia.

Small electronics, such as smartphones, were taken.

Batavia Police Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza previously had said it appeared burglars entered through an open ga-

rage in one case and possibly through some unlocked windows in the other two cases.

Mazza had said homeowners were home during the burglaries in all three cases and had no idea someone was in their house until they noticed items missing.

Curtis A. Hobbs, 23, of Aurora, who was charged with two felony counts of unlawful use of a credit card, faces a court hearing Thursday. Ter-

rell Jones-Bradley, 21, of Batavia, who was charged with two counts of residential burglary, one count of attempted residential burglary and two counts of unlawful use of a credit card, has a court hearing Oct. 23.

In addition, Sharonda Y. Moore, 22, of Batavia, charged with one count of possession of stolen property, has a court hearing Oct. 25.

A new trend has developed among patrons of the St. Charles Public Library in recent years, and it has nothing to do with books.

It’s about TV. “They tell us they’ve canceled their cable,” said Heidi Krueger, reference and information services manager.

Albeit small, it’s a trend happening nationwide. According to the Nielsen Company, more than 95 percent of Americans continue to get their information and entertainment from traditional cable or satellite options, but the “Zero-TV” group is growing.

This year, there were more than 5 million Zero-TV households in the United States, up from about 2 million in 2007, Nielsen reported.

Of the Zero-TV households, Nielsen found, two-thirds get their content from such devices as computers, the Internet, smartphones and tablets.

“The television itself isn’t obsolete, however, as more than 75 percent of these homes still have at least one TV set, which they use to watch DVDs, play games or surf the ‘Net,’” Nielsen reported.

ST. CHARLES – For St. Charles East High School, broadcasting school events used to involve the school making a recording of the event and giving it to a local cable outlet to run a few times a month, said Bill Stepien, the school’s Learning Resource Center director.

But now, he said, East works with the company High School Cube to broadcast such events as football games and graduations live over the Internet.

Anyone with Internet access from a computer, smartphone or tablet can watch the live feed, which immediately is archived, Stepien said.

At football games, he has seen people use High School Cube to watch replays of the contest on their phones, he said.

“It’s kind of neat,” Stepien said, noting players can use it to compile a highlight reel.

St. Charles East also uses High School Cube for student presentations, Stepien said.

He noted one teacher who uses the service invites his college professors to comment on the students’ work.

“It’s really an interesting outreach tool,” he said.

She noted there are tradeoffs for cutting cable that some aren’t willing to give up.

“While subscriptions to some of the nontraditional video providers like Netflix have seen impressive subscriber gains, consumers, overall, still rely on the cable subscrip-

tion for the big live events and for a wide range of channels they can’t receive on one of the alternative subscription plans,” she said.

Mediacom, which serves portions of western Kane County, has launched TV Everywhere, a service that lets its customers watch programming on their computer, tablet and smartphone. CNN, TBS, Cartoon Network and TNT are among the channels that can be accessed on the go.

“When the cord cutter word started to emerge, I was interested,” said Greg Scott, author of the Cord Cutter Guide. “At the same time, my wife and I thought cable was high, and we didn’t really watch many of the channels.”

Getting cable-provided content without cable can take some planning, Scott said, naming sports and some reality shows as challenges. But, he said, there are ways to access that content – sometimes at a cost – and he details those options on his website.

Popular cord cutter devices include Roku, Apple TV and Google Chromecast, Scott said. He noted that Aereo – a service that lets users watch live TV online – is coming to Chicago.

In St. Charles, residents of the St. Charles Public Library district can access a Roku device for free. The library recently added four of the streaming player devices to its catalog for checkout – and they almost always are checked out or on hold, Krueger said.

With the library’s Roku devices, she said, users can access Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

While more than 95 percent of Americans continue to get their information and entertainment from traditional cable or satellite options, the Nielsen Company this year explored how the rest of Americans – the “Zero-TV homes” – get their entertainment.

It found that 67 percent of Zero-TV homes get content on these other devices: • 37 percent – Computer • 16 percent – Internet • 8 percent – Smartphones • 6 percent – Tablets “They can watch whatever they want, unlimited,” she said.

St. Charles library card holders also can access movies and TV shows at www. hoopladigital.com, the new digital brand of Midwest Tape, a longtime content provider for libraries.

“Viewing habits have really changed,” said Jeff Jankowski, owner and founder of hoopla digital. “Libraries want to stay relevant to the needs of their customers.”

Within the first 25 days of the St. Charles library’s partnership with hoopla, 282 people were signed up with the service, and 257 items had been checked out, Krueger said. About two-thirds were movies, and the rest were TV shows, she said.

As for Scott, he said he has gone back and forth without cable. He is now without it, he said.

He said golf and food shows can be difficult programming to get without cable.

“Some things I miss,” he said.

ST. CHARLES – Judie died peacefully at home under wonderful hospice care. She was born in Warren, Pa., raised in Sheffield, Pa., and had resided in Illinois since 1956. For the past 25 years, Judie resided in St. Charles.

Of her many interests in life, she was an avid golfer, bridge player, wife, mother, grandmother and was blessed with family and friends who loved her very much!

She especially liked watching her grandkids grow up.

“It typically grows in flood plains and river bottoms and makes for a very hardy street

tree,” Womack said. “A lot of urban environments mimic the habitat of the flood plain – heavy clay or very dry or very wet.”

Ironwood grows slowly and the tree lilac is small, making them easier to grow in urban settings with overhead wires, he said.

Womack said he hoped more residents would participate in the city’s 50-50 program for parkway tree plantings.

“Trees in the parkway are so important for our city,” Womack said. “They ameliorate urban heat islands – the

Gaffeys considering Kane County diversion program

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The former superintendent of the Illinois Juvenile Prison Schools and his wife are seeking participation in Kane County’s diversion program on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and criminal damage to a glass patio door.

Kye D. Gaffey, 41, and his wife, Jennifer, 42, of Sterling, were charged Aug. 15 in an incident at a house on Southgate Course in St. Charles in which Jennifer’s former husband lives, as well as a 6-yearold boy. She and her former husband share custody of the boy.

Assistant Kane County State’s Attorney Daniel Weiler said the Gaffeys will see whether they are qualified for the diversion program.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s website, the diversion program allows nonviolent, first-time offenders to accept responsibility for their criminal activity and keep convictions off their record.

Speaking generally about the diversion program, but not about his client, Kye Gaffey, attorney Donald Zuelke said the couple would likely qualify to participate in the diversion program.

“It requires that they admit responsibility, accept responsibility, do community service and pay costs and fines,” Zuelke said. “It’s for when you do something that is ill-advised and out -of-character for a law-abiding person.”

Offenders must sign an agreement and provide a videotaped statement admitting to the elements of the charges and their involvement in them, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s website.

Participants also might be required to complete commu-

nity service hours, get counseling, write a letter of apology to the victim and pay full restitution and program fees, according to the website.

Upon successful completion, the state’s attorney will dismiss the charges. If other offenses are committed, however, the offender is terminated from the program and the original case returns to court, according to the website.

Kye Gaffey was terminated from his $110,244 position as superintendent of the state’s prison school system. Gaffey had worked in that position from 2000 to 2005 and had returned in 2011, records show.

St. Charles police said the Gaffeys were charged after a neighbor reported them inside the house while the family was away on vacation.

In earlier comments, Gaffey denied that he and his wife went inside the house, but said they were looking in the windows to document the boy’s living conditions.

The Gaffeys’ next court appearance is scheduled Dec. 4 at branch court, 350 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

County could post Mill Creek speed limits

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Drivers may not actually travel more slowly when moving around Mill Creek’s neighborhoods.

But the speed limit likely will be posted on all of that community’s streets soon.

Next week, the Kane County Board is scheduled to vote on a proposal to post speed limits of 25 mph on all streets in Mill Creek.

Mill Creek, Kane County’s largest unincorporated community, lies west of the boundaries of the city of

Geneva, and is governed by the county through the Mill Creek Special Service Area board.

The county also provides police protection in the community that lies roughly between Keslinger Road and Fabyan Parkway in Blackberry and Geneva townships.

Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, who represents Mill Creek on the County Board and who serves as chairman of the County Board’s Transportation Committee, said the speed limit reductions in Mill Creek are designed to stan-

dardize speeds in the community’s more than 100 streets.

The measure also is designed to clear up any misperceptions or legal ambiguities surrounding speed limits in Mill Creek.

Presently, Frasz said, most streets in Mill Creek have no posted speed limits.

That means that, in theory, someone who is ticketed for speeding in Mill Creek could challenge the ticket based on the lack of posted speed limits on what is essentially a county road.

A car chase that began when a driver struck a White House security barrier ended across downtown Washington, when police shot and killed the driver on a street near the U.S. Capitol, police said.

The woman driving the car was unarmed, law enforcement sources said.

All the shots in the incident, which began at 2:14 p.m., were fired by police trying to stop her.

Police fired at the car in at least two locations, as the car drove across Washington, and around the Capitol area.

Law enforcement officials said the car was registered to Miriam Carey, 34, of Stamford, Conn.

The officials said they believe Carey was driving the car.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said that there was a 1-year-old child in the car.

The child was said to be in good condition.

Two officers were injured during the incident, including a Capitol Police officer and a Secret Service officer. Both were not seriously harmed.

“The security perimeters worked,” D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said Thursday evening. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

The chase and the shootings triggered a brief lockdown in the Capitol, which was full of lawmakers and staff focused on the ongoing government shutdown. Officers ran through the ornate hallways carrying semiautomatic weapons for a tense half hour as employees were told to “shelter in place.” But no one in the Capitol complex was hurt, and the House resumed its business before 4 p.m.

“We have no information that this is related to terrorism, or is anything other than an isolated incident,” Dine said. He gave no information about the driver’s identity, or a possible motive.

The chase apparently stretched across downtown Washington. It started at the security barriers outside one icon, and ended at the barriers outside another.

Police said shots were first fired at the car at Garfield Circle SW, a traffic circle on the southwest side of the Capitol.

Shots were fired again at Maryland Avenue and Second Street SE. The car crashed, and then police fired again, Lanier said. Officers from both the Capitol Police and the Secret Service both fired, Lanier said, but it was unclear how many officers had fired shots, or how many rounds had been fired in total.

At the beginning of it all, Oregon residents B.J. and Susan Campbell saw a black sedan driven by a woman heading west on Pennsylvania, into a security checkpoint at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The driver went about 20 yards, B.J. Campbell said, before rapidly turning the car around at the concrete security barriers.

“The Secret Service guy was just having a cow,” B.J. Campbell said. “Yelling at her and banging on the car.”

The Secret Service officers pulled a black metal gate into her path and she slowed to try to go around it. Then the agent moved the gate in front of her again.

At that point “she just gunned it,” B.J. Campbell said. “She ran the barricade down and the guy; knocked him up onto her hood. He rolled off into the street, and she tore off down Pennsylvania Avenue.” The whole encounter lasted about 20 seconds, he said.

A look at one’s infantry days with author Tom Clancy

By BRAD TAYLOR Bloomberg News I returned from a run Wednesday morning to learn that author Tom Clancy, the signpost of my entry into the U.S. Army, had died.

Everyone has a sight, a sound, a smell that reminds him of a specific time in life – a vision of a first car, a song from high school, a whiff of perfume from college. For me, Clancy signifies the start of my military life. I first began reading him after I was recycled in Ranger School in 1987. Waiting on the next class, there wasn’t much to do besides push-ups and getting yelled at, so we read.

To this day, any mention of “The Hunt for Red October” or “Red Storm Rising” brings

back memories of sawdust, sweat, hot barracks and noisy fans.

I ended up as a second lieutenant, assigned to the 7th Infantry Division – newly minted as a “light” division, so we had no vehicles. We walked everywhere with our rucksacks on our backs and were proud of it. I had finished Clancy’s earliest novels by then and loved them. But they were all written about a world I could only imagine.

Yes, I was in the military, but I knew as much about submarines as I did about flying the space shuttle.

And then, Clancy entered my world. The writer visited my post to research a novel. We already knew he was famous for his “insider knowledge” and his ability

to accurately describe secret things. Now, he was turning his eye onto us.

The novel he was researching, “Clear and Present Danger,” was released in 1989 and became the best-selling novel of the decade – with the help of the 7th Infantry Division.

“Clear and Present Danger” wasn’t about submarines or fighter wings. It was about light-fighters – grunts humping the jungles of Colombia hunting drug lords.

One of its main characters was Domingo “Ding” Chavez, a noncommissioned officer in the 7th Infantry Division.

Of course, Clancy made some mistakes in his portrayal. It would have been impossible not to. But he got more right than wrong.

The Cold War was winding down, and Clancy was talking about a new threat: drugs. At this time, our division was rotating through Operation Blue Spoon in Panama, the utilitarian military name that preceded Operation Just Cause. Clancy appeared to be prophetic – we were light-fighters, embroiled with Manual Noriega in the war on drugs.

My infantry days are long gone, but I still grow wistful when I crack open that book.

I learned to write by reading, and Clancy was one of my primary instructors. He taught me how to craft prose, how to research. He taught me the importance, even in fiction, of a dedication to accuracy.

My next book is about the war on drugs – in Mexico,

not Colombia, but featuring a Clancy-esque technical “clear and present danger.” I had fantasized about mailing a copy to Clancy, thanking him for his writing and letting him know how he’d touched a young grunt way back when.

I don’t know if I would have had the gumption to do so, but I’m sorry not to have had the chance.

Vikings follow Schiller’s lead Linebackers learn from former standout, who was on NFL practice squad

Former Geneva standout Pat Schiller, who most recently played on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad, talks on the sideline Sept. 13 before Geneva’s game against Batavia. players with some of the advanced concepts he’s learned in recent years.

“I’ve been away from the high school level for quite a while, and playing five years of Division I college football and a year and a half with the NFL, you kind of forget keeping the main thing, the main thing,” Schiller said. “When you go back and teach [high school players], you have to realize what’s important, starting with just the fundamental things.”

Schiller said he’s been careful to reinforce messages from the Geneva coaches, most of whom are holdovers from his playing days, including head coach Rob Wicinski.

Naturally, several of the Vikings’ coaches have been eager to learn from Schiller, too.

“I learn stuff from them just like they learn stuff from me,” Schiller said. “I’m not sitting here saying they don’t know anything. It’s always good to hear another voice, an outside voice who has heard a bunch of different philosophies. It’s good. It helps keep everyone fresh and on their toes.”

Wicinski said Schiller’s presence has been appreciated, no matter the duration.

“I think just the mentality of the position, how you’ve got to approach it, I’ve seen a difference just in the short

time he was here,” Wicinski said.

Coincidentally or not, the Vikings are receiving quality play at linebacker, especially from senior Joe Boenzi (35 tackles, second on team) and Shodeen (32 tackles).

Boenzi played fullback for the Vikings as a junior, but Wicinski said moving him to linebacker this season was in the long-term plans.

Boenzi said he much prefers being in attack mode on defense based on his wiring.

“I’ve always had that little anger inside of me, so it’s just great to bring it out,” Boenzi said.

Shodeen, meanwhile, was not an opening-night starter

ENEVA – So far this fall, the NFL’s loss has been the Geneva football team’s gain.

The Atlanta Falcons cut former Geneva and Northern Illinois linebacker Pat Schiller at the end of the preseason, and Schiller has filled some of his newfound free time by helping mentor the Vikings’ linebackers in recent weeks, both at practices and during games. “[Geneva assistant coach Nick Herrera] knew what he was talking about, but then when Schiller came, it was a whole ’nother level of stuff he could teach because he obviously was a professional, so he knew some stuff that a traditional [coach] wouldn’t know,” Geneva junior linebacker Wyatt Shodeen said.

“So it was really helpful.”

The Vikings (3-2, 2-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) hope some of Schiller’s teachings continue paying dividends in tonight’s homecoming clash against St. Charles East (4-1, 2-0 UEC River) at Burgess Field.

Schiller, who spent last season with the Falcons’ practice squad, is fresh off a tryout with the Houston Texans. His playing aspirations make his status with the Vikings week-to-week.

He said a conversation with Geneva trainer Bill Durand shortly after he was released

by Atlanta started the ball rolling, and he joined the team in time for Geneva’s Week 3 game against Batavia.

Schiller said he’s had to “pump the brakes” to make sure he doesn’t overwhelm

for the Vikings, but has developed into one of the team’s most pleasant surprises. He grabbed a starting spot when sophomore Stephen Kemp was moved from linebacker to defensive tackle after the Vikings’ win at Oswego.

“It went 10 times better than I hoped,” Shodeen said.

“I just wanted to get on the field and play some football, and it turned out great.”

The Vikings’ defense still isn’t what it was in the Schiller days, but that’s a high bar to reach. Schiller, who recently has tried out for the Carolina Panthers in addition to the Texans, trains regularly at ProForce in Batavia, but those workouts are less painful than tuning in to NFL football on Sundays. Especially the Falcons.

“It’s so hard to watch the Falcons play, I’m not going to lie to you,” Schiller said. “It took me a while before I could even do it. All those guys, you’ve got a year and a half invested into a team. When you’re part of a team, you’re part of a brotherhood.”

Schiller’s ties run especially deep in tonight’s game considering he has remained close over the years with former Geneva assistant coach Mike Fields, who now coaches the Saints. Schiller said he’d be happy to help Fields and the Saints down the line if the opportunity comes along.

Fields said Schiller’s willingness to help his alma mater reflects well on Wicinski.

“That says a lot about the program we had back then,” Fields said. “Hopefully, I’ve been able to steal a little bit of that magic and bring it over to East.”

The Bulldogs will make their second Saturday afternoon trek in a three-week span as Batavia visits Larkin, with the game to be played on Elgin High’s campus.

The Bulldogs hope the trip goes as smoothly as their visit to another U-46 conference rival, Streamwood, on Sept. 21, a running-clock victory for the Bulldogs.

Considering Batavia’s opener against Glenbard North was pushed back a day by lightning, this will be the Bulldogs’ third Saturday game through six weeks.

REMEMBER WHEN …

Geneva’s playoff hopes were extinguished by Week 6 last season as Geneva lost at St. Charles East, 34-27, sending the Vikings to a 1-5 record. East’s Mitch Munroe, then a junior, had a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and an interception return for a TD in the game.

It marked the first East win over Geneva since former Vikings assistant Mike Fields took over the Saints’ program in 2009.

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK Marmion at Aurora Christian. The stakes are high for both teams, as Aurora Christian looks to keep pace with Montini atop the Suburban Christian Conference Blue standings while Marmion is eager to bounce back from its lone loss of the season.

It’s a game that could end up spelling the difference between a road or home first-round playoff game for the Cadets come pairings time.

ST. CHARLES EAST (4-1, 2-0 UPSTATE EIGHT CONFERENCE RIVER) AT GENEVA (3-2, 2-1 UEC RIVER) 7:30 p.m. today The buzz in the stands There seemingly are never-ending ties between Geneva and St. Charles East.

By now, the storyline of former Geneva assistant Mike Fields coaching against his mentor, Rob Wicinski, is dated, but former Vikings QB Shaun Ratay is in his first year directing East’s offense, earning praise from his old coach for his early results.

“He’s got just enough squirrelliness in him to keep you on your toes as a defensive coordinator, and he’s been very, very disciplined with his run game,” Wicinski said. “Nobody’s stopped him. Nobody so far has stopped East with their offense.

“It looks like it’s been a pretty good move for Fields to step aside there a little bit,” he added mischievously.

Marquee matchup – Quarterback East’s Jimmy Mitchell and Geneva’s Daniel Santacaterina don’t play head-to-head, but both have taken major steps forward in their second seasons as varsity QBs after Santacaterina’s first season was shortened by injury.

Through five weeks, Mitchell has thrown for 1,213 yards and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions, while Santacaterina has thrown for 1,212 yards with 13 TDs and eight interceptions. That’s right – the QBs are one yard apart.

X-factor Tighter discipline continues to be a point of emphasis for Geneva, and could be the difference in what projects as a close game.

Wicinski said this year’s team “easily” is among the most penalty-plagued teams he’s coached.

“We’ve had some really emotional games, too, so the tempers get high, but you’ve just got to keep your head focused regardless of what team you’re playing,” Vikings linebacker Wyatt Shodeen said.

Wicinski also is dissatisfied with his team’s number of giveaways.

“We’re about two turnovers per game right now, and it’s just way too many,” Wicinski said.

Best-case scenario for Saints East doesn’t have to rely too heavily on do-it-all seniors Brannon Barry and Mitch Munroe.

Both players are capable of hurting the Vikings in all three phases, but if the Saints’ complementary players are clicking, it would keep the speedy duo fresher for crunch time.

“Mitch Munroe played every single down in the Neuqua Valley game and Brannon, he’s playing almost every single down as well,” Fields said. “To put both of them out there like that, it’s tough, it takes its toll, but it’s high school football. Those guys know that, they understand that. I’d love to have 22 starters out there, but as coaches we’re going to do what we think is best to help our team as a whole.”

Another of East’s impact players, running back Erik Anderson, is still not healed from a shoulder injury that sidelined him in last week’s rout of Elgin.

Anderson, however, is expected to play tonight, and also assumes kicking duties with Pat Frio out with an injury.

Best-case scenario for Vikings Lengthen the periods of momentum, minimize the downturns.

Wicinski joked he was only going to send Fields game film from the second half against St. Charles North – when the Vikings nearly squandered a huge lead – but running hot and cold is a real concern for the Vikings.

Wicinski said he thinks this could end up being among his better Vikings teams, but that only can become reality if the Vikings sustain quality play for longer stretches, particularly in the second half.

The Vikings’ defensive line is one unit that could become dominant, with senior end Billy Douds looking especially dangerous. Sophomore defensive tackle Stephen Kemp leads the Vikings with 37 tackles, a “real big surprise” to Wicinski.

“Having a kid this active, I don’t think we expected that out of a sophomore,” Wicinski said.

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Geneva 30, St. Charles East 24 Maybe it’s the lights-out, first-half performance against St. Charles North talking, but the Vikings have the look of a team that’s primed for a late-season roll.

Mitchell and the Saints’ passing game has been up to the task all season, but a lot could be asked of them if Anderson is physically limited, and the Vikings seem to have the aerial firepower to match the Saints.

Look for the game to boil down to special teams. If the Vikings can tighten the ship there compared to last year’s meeting – especially when it comes to kick coverage – it could be a joyous homecoming at Burgess Field.

The skinny: The bad news for North is quarterback Erik Miller and defensive back Jonathan Elliott (concussions from Geneva game) and standout running back Evan Kurtz (shoulder injury) are expected to

be sidelined. But the North Stars’ timing could be much worse as North should be able to prevail against the winless Sabres minus some key parts, with an eye toward getting healthier for a Week 7 showdown against Batavia. In Miller’s absence, North turns to junior Nathan Didier, who has Miller’s endorsement as a quality, dual-threat QB. Tailbacks Nick Edlund and Chris Page might be in line for more carries, but North also promoted promising back Dom Sidari from the sophomore team. Without Kurtz

and Miller, it would be a nice game for North’s defense to lead the way. That unit played much better in the second half against Geneva after a first-half performance that left coach Rob Pomazak highly upset.

Extra point: Both of North’s victories have come in running clock romps while the North Stars’ three losses were each by seven points or less.

out to try and limit teams’ bigplay percentages and big-play numbers,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “We think our team pursuit is always something that improves throughout the year.

That’s something we’ve got to be on top of.” The Bulldogs expect to welcome back several regulars who have missed the past two weeks with injuries, including linebackers Anthony Thielk and Donovan Kilker and defensive end James Millette.

Extra point: Piron said he likes the Bulldogs’ depth enough that he doesn’t anticipate much more two-way play late in the season – as is often the case for the program although he said Thielk could see more time in the offensive backfield, Millette more work in double tight end sets and receiver Rourke Mullins might play more defensive back in the season’s late stages.

The skinny: Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe was elated with the way the Eagles’ defense thwarted St. Francis running back James Butler and Co. last week. He said defensive lineman Jonah Walker was “impossible to

block,” and also gave especially high marks to cornerback Legend Smith’s pass defense and open-field tackling and linebacker Trevor Hills. Beebe sees a more varied challenge in the Cadets. “They’ve got an awesome defense, they’ve got a really good quarterback and they’ve got five, six running backs that can all run the football,” Beebe said. “That’s harder to concentrate on than one guy like we did last week.” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe knows Aurora Christian isn’t exactly a madeto-order opponent for an offense that is looking to regroup from struggles against Montini.

“They’re big, they’re strong and they fly around,” Thorpe said of the Eagles. “Their schemes were traditional [against St. Francis] but the difficult part is they’re so well coached that if you do move the ball on their traditional defense, they’re [able to] give you a variety of looks that will confuse you.”

Extra point: Thorpe said the Cadets are banged up from dealing with the powerhouse Broncos. Powerful running back Lucas Warren is likely to be sidelined tonight.

The Spartans are determined to re-establish running back James Butler after a rare off week against Aurora Christian but also must gird themselves for a Hurricanes passing attack that saw quarterback Billy Bahl throw for 328 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s stomping of IC Catholic Prep.

Extra point: Four St. Francis defenders have notched interceptions on the season – Justin Berry, Jack Ahern, Joe Connelly and Ryan Benton.

The skinny: Kaneland’s remarkable run of regular season success (33 wins and counting) continued without injured standout left tackle Joe Komel the past two weeks, but Knights coach Tom Fedderly is nonetheless relieved that Komel is cleared to play this week. “If you can get a 6-4, 280 pound kid, that always makes me feel better,” Fedderly said. Fedderly likes his defense’s overall depth and the way it has tackled throughout the season. Tackling precision could be especially critical against the always athletic Barbs. “What causes a problem to defend is they have a running quarterback and weapons along with him,” Fedderly said. “ … They like to spread you out with their athletes and if you miss a tackle, it can lead to seven points.” Running back Eriq Torrey ran for 138 yards in the Barbs’ win at Streator.

Extra point: Tonight is only Kaneland’s second road game, the other being a 48-7 romp Sept. 13 against Sterling. The Knights play three of their last four regular season games away from Maple Park.

SCN soccer player looking for more chances QUICK READ Kevin Druley High schools don’t deal in lengthy fall breaks, but St. Charles North sophomore Marissa Bosco’s upcoming trip to the West Coast doesn’t qualify as one, anyway.

Marissa will be missing school but not stimulation as she competes in a U.S. Soccer U15 Girls National Team camp at U.S. Soccer’s national training center in Carson, Calif., from Saturday to Oct. 12.

A midfielder for the Oak Brook-based Eclipse Select club, Marissa hopes to keep shining on the heels of an earlier camp invite in Dallas in May. “It’s very demanding physically and mentally. There’s two-a-days and there’s all these scrimmages that college coaches come out to,” Marissa said. “It’s just to give you an opportunity in front of national coaches with all these camps leading up to the World Cup and everything.”

Thoughts of ascending to an elite level in a sport she first embraced as a 5-year-old Tri-Cities Soccer Assocation player is heady stuff for Marissa, so she works to keep herself grounded.

“I feel like I’ve always been on very talented teams, so a lot of players are very

talented that I play with, so they make me better and we all have the potential,” Marissa said.

The younger sister of standout Marmion wrestler Anthony Bosco, Marissa starred on the club scene this past season, helping Eclipse Select’s U15 program to summer national titles in the Elite Club National League and US Youth Soccer.

The waiting game: St. Charles East grabbed a 3-2 lead against Geneva before Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls tennis dual was suspended because of darkness.

A win in either of the two remaining matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles – both are in the third set and will resume Wednesday – would put the host Saints in solid footing for their first conference crown. East is 4-0 in UEC River duals, one win better than Geneva.

“We have a strong team.

It’s practically a senior team, so we all come out and do our best and everything, and I think it’s a good year because we work together well,” said Saints senior Alexa Huskisson, who teamed with her twin sister, Carly, for a victory at No. 2 doubles.

East’s other victories against Geneva were in doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of seniors Haydyn Jones and Kelsie Roberton is tied with

Santacaterina played through the injury for nearly two months after first reporting discomfort during a match on June 29 at Seattle.

The 25-year-old started 14 matches in 2013, collecting three goals and one assist.

Santacaterina is expected to return to full playing condition in six months, according to a team release.

The 2014 NWSL season opens in April.

Vikings top North Stars for their first conference win

What gave was the North Stars, as the Vikings came to town and cruised to a 3-0 victory to spoil North’s senior night.

The win moved the Vi-

kings to 6-8 overall, 1-4 in the UEC River, while the North Stars fell to 2-9-2 and 0-2-1.

“We had a lot of close games, but we haven’t been able to finish,” said Grant Bracken, who scored the Vikings’ first goal 10 minutes into the match. “This win, with four games left, puts us in a good position heading into the playoffs.

“The first goal was very important. Coach [Ryan Estabrook] said we might only get a half in because of the weather, so I went out there as hard

as I could to bring our team some energy.”

Igor Honore made it 2-0 with a goal midway through the second half, and Beck Nebergall put the game away when he found the back of the net with 14:45 left in the match.

“That was very frustrating, and I’m sure more frus-

trating for the guys out on [the] field,” North coach Eric Willson said. “We had a significant amount of the play and a significant amount of the possessions.

“What they did very well is defend a lot of the balls we served up and did not give us a lot of clean looks. When they got opportunities, they capitalized on them. That is how you win soccer games.

A 45-minute rain delay about six holes into the tournament couldn’t slow the Indiana-bound Weber.

“It was a good round,” Weber said. “I hit the ball really well today. It was probably the best I’ve played in a few weeks or so. My game is going pretty good, but it could have been a lot better today.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East’s boys soccer team remains unbeaten, but a frustratingly similar result still has the Saints slightly on edge.

East played Streamwood to a scoreless tie for the second time in five days Thursday. Saints coach Paul Jennison found the Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest flowed in much the same manner as Saturday’s championship match of East’s home tournament.

East (11-0-4, 3-0-1 UEC River) dominated the run of play but was unable to convert.

“Controlled it, had numerous chances,” Jennison said.

“Their keeper played a great game, and unfortunately we couldn’t break the deadlock.”

In off-field news Thursday, Saints senior forward T.C. Hull (torn right ACL) was cleared to play for the first time since suffering his injury during club play in April.

“He’s cleared to play,” Jennison said, “but obviously that would be a gradual thing we’ll be monitoring the next couple weeks. … There’s always a possibility [Hull will return], but I’m certainly not going to get too ahead of myself.”

DeKalb 2, Kaneland 1: At Maple Park, Kaneland’s adjustments from an earlier loss to DeKalb worked for the first half when the Knights took an early 1-0 lead, but DeKalb shifted into a different gear in the second half.

Cat goes on prowl for luxury sedan buyers Maybe it is the cabinet lighting on the front door panels that illuminate the window, locking and exterior mirror controls.

Or it might be the headlamps that dim and return to bright automatically at night.

Also it could be the deep leather power heated front seats.

Then again, it is possible the barometer of quality is the handy way the 2014 all-wheel-drive car’s suspension system reacts on rough roads.

These persuasive attributes are a few among many why the 2014 Jaguar XJL should be taken seriously when it comes to buying a luxury four-door, five-passenger luxury sedan.

The panel lighting on the front doors means no more fumbling around in the dark when the driver wants to adjust a rearview mirror. The automatic headlamps means the driver cannot forget to dim the lights for an oncoming car in the opposite lane. Heated front seats are obvious comforts in winter.

They also are heated in the rear of this $83,700 car. Headlights are high intensity xenon and smart as they are adaptive and move, up to a degree, with the car through curves at night. LED bulbs are utilized in the large rear taillamps.

Power is a hallmark of the Jaguar and this year’s V6 engine produces it. The XJ can have a V6 or V8, 3- or 5-liter, 340 to 510 horsepower engine. Supercharged and Sport XJs have the bigger and more powerful engines. Portfolio models include the V6s. The tested XJL has been tested by the factory in racing from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds. The supercharged and “supersport” V8s (470 and 510 horsepower) are capable of doing it in less than 5 seconds.

The formerly difficult J-shifter has been replaced by a knob on the center console. The knob is the shifter and it can be moved to five settings, which are park, drive, sport, neutral and reverse.

The Jaguar XJ is a four-door, five-passenger luxury sedan with several available engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The tested sedan was a 3-liter, 340-horsepower V6 in the all-wheel-drive Portfolio model of the XJL. An XJL is the 124.3-inch long wheelbase model of the XJ as opposed to the standard 119.4-inch wheelbase.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper from $73,200 to $90,000. The long wheelbase XJL Portfolio with AWD, which was the test car, comes in at a suggested retail price of $83,700 or $2,500 more than the rear-wheel-drive model.

As one would expect, the XJL is loaded with luxury features.

Controls to sound and climate functions are easy to reach and operate. Instrumentation is sensible and easy to see, especially an information window that displays temperature, time and travel information.

Dressed in simple but elegant garb, there is nicely stitched leather on the seats and at the top of the dashboard. Interior trim includes metal and burled hardwood.

Seats front and rear are commodious and comfortable.

Legroom is good in front and in the rear bench seat, which includes individual reading lights, armrests and cupholders. At 15.2 cubic feet, the carpeted and lighted trunk is deep and square.

A 320-watt, Meridian 14-speaker sound system serves AM-FM and Sirius satellite radio, compact disc player (storage for six), MP3 playback, auxiliary audio input jack, Bluetooth and iPod or iPhone.

The sound system includes HD or high definition radio digital sound technology, which promises crystal-clear, static-free reception. Radio stations in the Chicago area with HD digital sound number more than 60 and include WFMT 98.7 FM (classical), WBBM 780 AM (news), WLS 890 AM (talk) and WSCR 670 AM (sports).

tings for three for positioning of steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors and front bucket driver’s seat. Other power features include windows, door locks, sunroof and keyless entry. The front sunroof opens and tilts.

The rear sunroof is fixed.

During the test week, the 4,153-pound XJL averaged 22.2 miles per gallon in mixed interstate and country driving.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the car at 24 mpg highway, 16 mpg city and 19 mpg combined. Premium fuel is recommended for the 21.7-gallon tank. Acceleration was instant and quiet in passing situations on the interstate. Braking the performance tires (safe up to speeds of 121 mph) mounted on four 19-inch wheels is the responsibility of 12-inch disc brakes. A minispare is stored under the trunk floor.

Steering is extremely agile, and this 206.8-inch long cat can turn a circle in 42.3 feet. Continuous electronic damping for the suspension system kept the sedan on an even keel in tight turns or sudden stops. For the feel of a stick transmission, there are paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

The XJL comes with smart start, which means the vehicle starts and stops by pushing a button on the center console.

The key fob simply has to be nearby, such as in a purse or pocket.

Safety features include an antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, seatbelts with head restraints and pretensioners front and rear, airbags in front, on sides (front) and overhead (both seating rows), dusk sensing headlights and high pressure washers for the self-leveling headlamps.

Instead of a leaping cat poised on the hood of the car, a jaguar’s face is embedded in the upper mesh grille in front. There is a lower grille flanked by foglights.

In the rear, the short decklid is graced with the shiny alloy profile of a leaping jaguar along with Jaguar and XJL badging.

The long wheelbase XJ (124.3 inches) is five inches more than the standard (119.4 inches) wheelbase. The extra five inches translates into five more inches of leg room in the cabin.

It is really felt in the rear seat, which is as comfortable, as far as stretching out is concerned, as it is sitting in the front seat.

During the test week guests preferred sitting in the rear.

It had the ample legroom as well as its own armrests, reading lights and climate vents and controls.

The traditional dual oval alloy exhaust tips are huge and protrude unobtrusively from the rear fascia.

‘Parkland’ is a sober-minded reenactment of the assassination of John F. Kennedy

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Seen through one lens, “Parkland,” Peter Landesman’s sober-minded, scrupulously faithful reenactment of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the three days that followed that event, was inevitable.

In an era of compulsive repackaging of the past – from nostalgic jukebox musicals to near-immediate retellings like “Zero Dark Thirty” – and during the assassination’s 50th anniversary year, it’s natural that the cardinal trauma of the baby boomer generation would provide fodder for yet another feature film.

But considering Hollywood’s penchant for hype and editorializing, “Parkland” is anything but inevitable. Serious, careful, assiduously uninflected, Landesman’s often fascinating tick-tock stands as the anti-“JFK,” Oliver Stone’s fever dream of a grand unified conspiracy theory. Rather than lead viewers down rabbit holes populated by babushka ladies and umbrella men, “Parkland” simply focuses on the known facts, without speculation and with stylistic embellishment.

A film of modest ambition and workmanlike pacing, it breaks no new ground, either in form or content. Then again, that may be the point.

“Parkland” begins with familiar newsreel footage of Kennedy’s visit to Texas on Nov. 22, 1963, when he joshingly accepted a cowboy hat in Fort Worth before decamping for Dallas. As the president and first lady make their way to the motorcade, a young emergency medicine resident named Jim Carrico

(Zac Efron) blearily prepares for another day at Parkland Hospital; an FBI agent named James Hosty (Ron Livingston) glances at one of the “Wanted for Treason” flyers that have appeared around Dallas in anticipation of Kennedy’s arrival; and a garment executive named Abraham Zapruder (Paul Giamatti) excitedly grabs his new Super-8 camera and heads to Dealey Plaza to secure a prime spot for filming.

We know what happens next. And Landesman – a former journalist making his directing debut here – dwells with graphic, at times morbid fascination on the fruitless attempts of Carrico and his team to save the president’s life, reminding viewers of the copious amount of blood in the ER and tweaking the sound mix to accentuate every squishy footstep.

Working with cinematographer Barry Ackroyd – whose shaky-cam technique has brought docudrama verisimilitude to the work of

Paul Greengrass and Kathryn Bigelow – Landesman effectively conveys the chaos and panic of what momentarily felt like a coup.

Those sequences are excruciating to watch, but once “Parkland” leaves the hospital to catch up with the unlikely individuals who intersected with the assassination, the film becomes a gripping, even mesmerizing exploration of events for which there was no frame of reference – experiential, mythical or otherwise.

Working from Vincent Bugliosi’s book “Four Days in November,” Landesman doesn’t shy away from the bizarre coincidences and confrontations that converged around the JFK assassination, from Hosty’s previous communications with Lee Harvey Oswald and the outrageous demands of Oswald’s termagant of a mother (a hysterically strident Jacki Weaver, in the film’s only off-key performance) to the Dallas medical examiner coming to unseemly blows to keep the body in Dallas.

Methodically and with generally unfailing good restraint, Landesman re-creates the grief surrounding the crime and the confusion of Oswald’s capture and subsequent murder. He steadfastly avoids putting any spin on the ball, even when Hosty obeys orders to destroy the Dallas FBI’s Oswald file, thus igniting untold conflagrations of conspiracy theories.

“Parkland” captures the sadness, solemnity and surreal weirdness of it all.

But it also honors the dignity of those accidental participants whose lives would be forever marked by the JFK assassination. When Zapruder negotiates with “Life” magazine to publish stills from what amounts to an inadvertent snuff film, he insists that the most graphic frames be excised.

Improbably, the most affecting figure in “Parkland” is Oswald’s brother, Robert, played by James Badge Dale in a quietly galvanizing portrayal of a man whose fundamental decency informs every simple act and word left unsaid.

Blessed with the kind of ageless face that transcends trend and time period, Dale is revelatory in a film that, while perhaps not conventionally entertaining, successfully acquits its mission – to tell us that this happened, and what it might have felt like to be a numb, grieving, reluctant witness.

• “Parkland” received two-and-a-half stars out of four and is rated PG-13 for bloody sequences of ER trauma procedures, some violent images and language and smoking throughout. The film runs 93 minutes.

Parents weighed down by kids’ homework No child is illegitimate Dear Abby: My kids attend a private school that has made it a goal to be a “blue ribbon” school.

To that end, teachers pile on so much homework that many of our parents send our kids to bed after three hours and finish it ourselves. Our kids are completely overwhelmed with senseless piles of busywork.

This summer, our children had to read four substantial books and complete hefty vocabulary packets and math packets that required most of us parents to hire tutors. Our children are stressed, anxious and depressed.

We have never indulged them with a lot of video game or TV time. I have considered pulling my kids out of this school, but the public schools around here are awful.

He didn’t attend his prom. He quit school and goes to night school instead. I’ll never see him in a cap and gown, holding his diploma. On top of that, he told me six months ago that he’s bisexual and that he has a boyfriend in the U.K. I’m having a hard time with all of this.

I taught my son to love and respect everyone, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. Now I’m afraid I won’t have any grandchildren. Even more

upsetting, he wants to move to the U.K. to be with his 26-year-old boyfriend.

I feel so cheated – no prom, no graduation, no grandchildren!

How do I accept him being him? – Cheated In Connecticut Dear Cheated: OK, so reality isn’t in sync with your fantasy about how your son would turn out. But why are you dwelling on the negative?

Your son is completing his high school education, and with his GED could very well go on to college or a technical school.

While he didn’t attend his prom, he has found a meaningful relationship. He may eventually give you the grandchildren you long for – other same-sex couples have done it.

So, look on the bright side.

If you count your blessings, encourage him and accept the man he loves, you could have a life of adventure and international travel, a warm relationship with both of them and gain a son.

Eliminating food additives may help kids with ADHD Dear Doctor K: My son has ADHD. Should I eliminate all foods that contain artificial food coloring from his diet?

Dear Reader: I’ve asked my pediatric colleagues here at Harvard Medical School for their thoughts about your question. They reminded me that some parents, advocacy groups and scientists have long worried about a link between artificial food colorings and hyperactivity in children.

In March 2011, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel reviewed evidence on this topic.

The FDA concluded that artificial food colorings do not appear to contribute to hyperactivity, distractibility and other behavior problems in most children.

On the other hand, the FDA allowed that certain children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be uniquely vulnerable, not just to food colorings, but to any number of food additives. ADHD symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity or impulsive behavior.

If you’re worried about artificial colorings in your son’s food, consider the following: • Avoid a radical approach.

For most children with ADHD,

Try not to let your concern over food additives distract you from established guidelines for healthy eating.

• Try eliminating some foods.

Experiment a bit. Remove the major sources of artificial colors and additives from your son’s diet to see if his symptoms improve.

Those sources include candy, junk food, brightly colored cereals, fruit drinks and sodas.

The symptoms to focus on in determining whether your son’s ADHD is improving with these changes are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Inattention in kids (and adults) with ADHD is reflected in different behaviors. After you eliminate artificial colors and food additives, does your son seem less forgetful? Less easily distracted?

Does he complete tasks you’ve asked him to do more often? Is he getting better grades at school?

Improvement in hyperactivity usually is easier to spot. Is your

son less fidgety – does he stay seated in one place more often, instead of being restless? Is he more likely to complete a one-person game on the computer?

As for impulsivity, is your son more able to wait his turn? Does the teacher say he is less likely to interrupt her and other students when they are talking? Is he less likely to say bad things or hit other kids when he gets mad at them?

If he has been experimenting with alcohol, tobacco or drugs, has this behavior quieted down?

ADHD can damage a child’s development. It can make it harder to develop friendships or to do well in school. It can lead to behaviors, such as experimenting with drugs, that can damage the child physically and emotionally.

Reducing or eliminating foods with a lot of artificial coloring or additives may not make a difference for the average kid with ADHD. But your son may be one of the kids who are helped by such a dietary change, so give it a try.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and live with my parents. They have been very good to me, and I love them very much.

Last week, I received the shock of my life. I asked my mother for my birth certificate because I needed it for a part-time job. My mother made a copy for me, and I noticed she had a funny maiden name. I said she was probably happy to change her name when she got married.

Then I asked her when they got married and if she had any wedding pictures. After a long silence, my dad looked at my mom and said, “This is as good a time as any because she needs to know.” Then my dad said, “We were never married.”

I couldn’t believe it.

If they were not married when I was born, that meant that I was illegitimate. I started crying and so did my mom. They told me that they had always loved each other, and they loved me and considered us all a family and that it does not change anything.

After thinking it all over, I guess it really doesn’t bother me, but now I’m wondering if this will hurt me in any way later in life? – Nameless, Las Vegas, Nev. Dear Nameless: The cruel idea that any child could be “illegitimate” is, thankfully, as outmoded as many other old prejudices.

The purpose of a birth certificate is to verify date of birth and the place a child was born, not to establish “legitimacy.”

Believe me, you will be judged in life on your character, not what is written on your birth certificate. Mom and Dad created the problem by not being upfront with you. They chose to live in a com-

Girls tend to have facial blemishes earlier than the boys, starting at about age 14, bur boys generally have more severe and longer-lasting skin problems. One theory has it that girls – who are more self-conscious about appearance – appear to suffer less from skin problems because they seek treatment sooner and more often than guys do.

But teens who have social issues because of a complexion problem can receive help.

Medical science has produced products that reduce and eliminate facial blemishes. A visit to a dermatologist is recommended.

A hard contract to play correctly has an obvious-looking line that doesn’t work, and an alternative approach that can also be tried – which actually does succeed. This deal, as if you could not guess, is an example. South is in three no-trump.

What should declarer do?

That South hand, with all of those aces and kings and the five-card suit, is easily worth at least 24 points. North used Stayman, then signed off in three no-trump when South denied a four-card major. Yes, five diamonds would have made, but do not go past three no-trump unless you are either sure that game cannot make or contemplating a slam in your minor.

South starts with eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, three diamonds and one club.

And many players, taking one look at that gorgeous diamond suit in the dummy, would win the first trick, cash the diamond ace, play another diamond ... and go down one.

Is there a way to win nine tricks even if diamonds do not break 3-2? Yes, the hearts might be 3-3. South, after taking the first trick, should lead his low heart (or cash his top hearts and, when both opponents follow suit, play a third round).

The defenders take the heart trick and lead another spade, but South wins, cashes his top hearts and the diamond ace, plays another diamond, and here claims nine tricks.
