Lindsay gears up with appearance in Sugar Grove

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Supporters gathered Monday in Sugar Grove to help Yorkville businessman Will Lindsay gear up for his run on the Republican ticket for Illinois secretary of state.

Lindsay said if elected, he hopes to bring the Department of Motor Vehicles into the 21st century, create a program that rewards good drivers and make it easier for people to renew their licenses. He also said he would like to see the secretary of state’s office play a bigger role as a business advocate.

“We just have to get the state back on track,” he said.

“The secretary of state’s office is underutilized.”

He said providing online forms, such as those required for renewing a license, is one way to speed up processes at the Department of Motor Vehicles. He said if those forms are available, people can fill them out ahead of time and help people save some time.

He said it can be easier for small business owners to do their annual business services filings, such as a limited

He said the state doesn’t send out a reminder for those filings, but charges late fees that continue to climb if they go unpaid. Lindsay said he’d rather require businesses to file every three years, instead.

Lindsay said he also would like to reinstate an old program that issued “good driving citations” to people with clean driving records. For example, if drivers get such a citation for five consecutive

years, they could be exempt from paying for their registration.

In what he called “a celebration of our elderly,” Lindsay said he wants drivers ages 65 and older to no longer have to pay for DMV services, such as license or ID renewals.

Kevin Geary, who is a Sugar Grove trustee and treasurer for Lindsay’s campaign, said he’s not worried about Lindsay challenging current officeholder, Democrat Jesse White, who is running for his

fifth term. “… No one person should be running for office,” he said. “We created a slogan, ‘Where there’s a Will, there’s a way.’ ” Supporter Ben Marcum of Bristol said he supports term limits and thinks White’s term should be up. He said he thinks Lindsay would be a good fit for the office.

“I really liked his enthusiasm for the job and about the job,” he said. “Jesse White has been there way too long.”

Reaching a greater audience Waterline Writers giving many a chance to share their work

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As an attentive audience looked on in the art gallery at Water Street Studios in Batavia, Norlyn Dimmit took to the podium to present his views of democracy.

“We need to collaborate for the common good,” Dimmit said. Since February 2012, writers like Dimmit have been sharing their work every month as part of a group called Waterline Writers.

Dimmit said he was pleased to be given that opportunity.

“It gave me the chance to talk to a new audience,” he said.

Waterline Writers is the brainchild of Batavia residents Anne Veague and Kevin Moriarity, who are writers themselves. As of September, 81 writers have read at the events at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., Batavia.

“Writers don’t normally get a chance to read their work,” Veague said. “It is a place to share their work.”

The theme of Waterline Writers’ most recent reading was “Writing Matters,” a different format than most of the group’s sessions, which primarily will focus on nonfiction writing.

“It was more about the message than creative writing,” Veague said. “Normally, we are just looking for the best in fiction.”

Veague is in charge of curating the readings, which involves finding the best pieces and arranging them so each piece builds on the others. Each session features between six or seven writers, and each is given about eight minutes each.

“It just seems to work,” Veague said. “That’s the attention span most people have.”

As the executive director of Teen Writers and Artists Project, a nonprofit organization that mentors teens in the arts,

she is trying to instill the love of the written word and the arts in young people.

“We have had as many as 85 people at a session,” he said. “Most of the audience is comprised of writers. It is more of a writers community.”

Waterline Writers has featured writers as young as 15 and as old as 80. Those participating in the readings have read everything from essays to screenplays.

“I think our strength is our variety,” Moriarity said.

Readings are at 7 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month, and Waterline Writers’ next session is set for Oct. 20. They are taped by public access station BATV, giving writers a bigger audience than the one they are speaking in front of at Water Street Studios.

Moriarity hopes that Waterline Writers will grow to be an even bigger part of the literary world in the Chicago area.

“We’re trying to reach out more in the writing community,” he said.

officials said.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 4:44 p.m. and put the blaze out an hour later, officials said.

The cause is under investigation, officials said.

Batavia business rolling with handmade garden spinners

“For the last few years I have been making them and selling them at our garage sales,” Saloga said. “I couldn’t make them fast enough.”

Saloga and his wife, Julie, recently opened a store, Windmill City Spinners & More Decor, which sells the garden spinners as well as other decor. The store is at 13 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, behind the historic Gammon house.

In opening the store, the couple is following in the footsteps of Bill Saloga’s parents, Vickie and Marc Roth, longtime owners of Cottage Garden Farm, a gift and home decor shop in Waupaca, Wis. Saloga and his dad have developed an aerodynamic and bearing technology coupled with a balancing procedure that allows the garden spinner to work with wind speeds as low as 2 miles per hour.

Aldermen will discuss the issue at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting.

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers, 100 N. Island Ave.,

Batavia.

Aldermen in May voted, 7-6, to send the issue back to committee for further discussion.

They have been considering removing tattoo parlors and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district.

The proposed change would not affect the two tattoo parlors currently in the downtown, which would be grandfathered in as a non-

John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager, said a third water tower is needed for several reasons, including storage needs.

It also can be used as backup when others are down for maintenance and painting, he said.

Construction on the Red Gate Water Tower is expected to begin next summer and should be completed by spring 2015, he said.

The city originally planned to build a 1 million-gallon water tower based on information from the 10 Year Water Study done in 2007, Lamb said.

However, he said, Engineering Enterprises Inc. – the company hired to do design and construction engineering for the project – recommended a capacity of 1.5 million gallons because of more recent data.

This would make the Red Gate Water Tower the largest in St. Charles, as the others can hold 300,000 gallons and 1 million gallons, Lamb said.

The 1 million-gallon tank was to cost $1.8 million, but now with the additional 500,000 gallons, the cost will be $3.625 million, according to city documents.

Lamb said the additional costs will be included in the budget for fiscal 2014-15.

“Hopefully, it will come in at a lower cost when we go out to bid,” Lamb said. “We’ve been fortunate to have that happen with other projects.”

Annually, the cost to the average residential user is estimated at $12.77, about $6 more than the cost for the smaller tower, according to documents.

Documents indicate the city and Engineering Enterprises Inc. are applying for an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency low-interest loan at a rate of 1.93 percent to finance the project.

Set for Oct. 11 to 13, the festival will have five categories of scarecrows displayed in Lincoln Park, which is along Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets.

been added on First Street between Main and Illinois streets; near the St. Charles Municipal Center at Main Street and Riverside Avenue; and along the riverwalk that borders the east bank.

• Longtime participant Ted Eynik will share stories of the 20 elaborate, moving displays he created during the festival’s history.

“Due to circumstances beyond his control, Ted was not able to enter a scarecrow in this year’s contest,” vis-

itors bureau Executive Director Amy Egolf said in the release.

“But, he has become a tradition of our festival, and we know attendees who attended past fests specifically to see his creations will be eager to meet him and see examples of the techniques and elements he used to bring so much enjoyment to so many festival goers.”

Free shuttles will be available to those parked in Lot H at Charlestowne Mall and at Illinois and Seventh streets.

Scarecrow Fest is produced by the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau and Ravenswood Event Services.

She was the director of religious education at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Maple Park for 17 years and a faithful member of the church.

Teri loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and many special friends.

Pumpkins for a Cure brings out fun

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Queen Meadowyn was getting her face on in the parking lot of the old Kane County Courthouse in Geneva on Saturday.

The queen – also known as Juliet Devries of Waukegan – was holding still while The Ruby Ruse was painting her face before adjusting her wings for the big Pumpkins for a Cure Festival.

Ruby, Ame Morghan of Chicago, already had her wings on.

The two were among many volunteers at the ninth annual event, a fundraiser for the Zellmer Childhood Disease Foundation to support education and research related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of chronic childhood diseases.

“It’s a good cause,” Morghan said.

Carla Henault, an event coordinator and Isaiah Horton, a volunteer and researcher, both with the Kovler Diabetes Center, said they were happy to be part of the effort to raise money for research.

Horton said he was part of a research group looking into the beta cells of genetically engineered mice and their secretion of insulin, in the effort to find better, more effective treatments.

The festive atmosphere filled the downtown area with other related attractions, such as glucose testing, face-painting, a petting zoo, juggler and raptors.

Nowak said Coultrap was noted for his devotion to continuing professional development.

“Even then, our mission was to develop lifelong learners, and this is actively modeled by every member of our professional staff,” Nowak said. “He retired in 1950, and from that time until his death in 1963, Mr. Coultrap and his wife, Anna, lived at 207 Logan Ave., across the street from the old Geneva High School.”

The school named for him was dedicated 55 years ago to the day that the administration center took on his name – Coultrap Junior High – on Sept. 28, 1958, according to the district’s history. It became a middle school in 1968 and was converted to an elementary school in 1994.

It was closed as an attendance center in 2009. The Coultrap facility was torn down this year, as it was deemed too expensive to maintain. It was the only school in the district to be named after a person rather than a geographic location, officials said.

Paul Coultrap reflected on how his grandfather’s nature served him as the school district’s leader.

“I was five [years old] when my grandfather died, so I have limited memories of him,” Paul Coultrap said. “The most vivid memory I have involved a can

of apricots. My grandmother was in the hospital, and my parents were visiting. I was too young to go to the hospital and stayed with my grandfather at their house in Geneva.”

Coultrap said he cut his finger with the can opener.

“I still have the scar,” Coultrap said. “Being a kind, caring, compassionate man, he demonstrated all of those qualities as he mended my finger.

Harry Coultrap served as superintendent of Geneva schools for 38 years. Caring, kind and compassionate are the perfect words to describe a man who put his fingerprint on a school system he would lead for almost four decades.”

Coultrap said under his grandfather’s leadership, kindergarten classes began, a manual arts department was formed and home economics and music classes became part of the curriculum.

“I often wonder what he would think of Geneva schools today,” Coultrap said. “I think he would be truly proud of them. ... I think most of all, he would be proud of what a great school system Geneva has become.”

As the Coultraps opened the time capsule, they removed items such as the district’s records of buying the land to build the school, a copy of the Geneva Republican, a yearbook and some coins. Superintendent Kent Mutchler said the items would be put on display at the administration center.

GENEVA – Harry Coultrap, Geneva School District 304’s first superintendent, was honored and remembered Saturday in a ceremony in front of the newly renamed administration center – the Coultrap Educational Services Center – at 227 S. Fourth St., Geneva.

About 50 people attended the ceremony, which included opening a time capsule from the original Coultrap school’s 1923 cornerstone when the 90-year-old building was torn down earlier this year. Some of the bricks from that building were used to build the sign and the walkway to it, officials said.

Coultrap’s grandchildren, Paul and Martha Coultrap, thanked the district for creating a permanent reminder of their grandfather’s contribution to the Geneva community.

Coultrap served as superintendent from 1912 to 1950. He died in 1963.

“It was over 100 years ago that my grandparents first settled in Geneva,” Paul Coultrap said. “Harry Coultrap had a huge impact on the community of Geneva. After having been gone 50 years, his legacy continues within this community.”

Martha Coultrap said she was honored by those who came to the ceremony.

“When my grandfather was wooed by Geneva – they were in Elgin – and Grandma packed a lunch and they came down,” Martha Coultrap said. “He had his interview, and they went over and sat on the courthouse steps and ate their lunch and looked at each other and said, ‘This is a nice community.’ If they had been here today, they would just be so amazed and would say, ‘This is a nice community.’”

School board member Kelly Nowak recounted Coultrap’s legacy in the district and the community.

“I really think that it is our community [that] was probably more honored by his service,” Nowak said. “He did so much for the students in this commu-

Batavia homes on display during House Walk

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Charming curbside appeal, historical homes and clever renovations drew crowds to Batavia on Sunday for the annual MainStreet House Walk, which offered seven stops.

Those who toured a brick colonial-style home in the 300 block of North Lincoln Street, learned that it was built in 1936 by architect Franklin G. Elwood, a Batavia resident who was a teacher and supervisory architect at Mooseheart and also designed the Sugar Grove Community House in Sugar Grove, which was built in 1929. The current residents are the fifth owners of the home, which features an updated kitchen, basement and sun room.

“I always walk around and wonder what’s inside,” Jessica McGrail said.

“It’s become a yearly tradition,” Bill McGrail said.

The couple’s Batavia home was built in the early 1900s, much like a colonial home

they had toured on Sunday.

They said they enjoy doing renovations and picking up ideas along the house walk.

“We’re big into remodeling,” Bill McGrail said. “We’re constantly doing something.”

Other stops on the tour included a stone cottage built in

the 200 block of North Lincoln Street in 1940; a newly built craftsman-style home in the 400 block of Elm Street; and an updated early 1900s white clapboard home in the 400 block of Union Avenue.

The seventh annual walk benefitted the Batavia MainStreet organization and its efforts to revitalize the downtown.

Docent Helen Thelin said the stone cottage home, which was featured as the first stop on the tour, originally was built by the Prindel family as their retirement home.

“Since then, as other people moved in, they’ve enlarged it without changing the charming curbside appeal,” she said.

As people waited in line to tour the home, Thelin told them that every room in the home has some type of item from present-day Batavia. She also told them that the home’s sun room overlooked a myobi maple tree in the home’s front yard, which she said is believed to be the second-oldest

in the Chicago area.

Another home on the tour – the white clapboard from the early 1900s – originally was a servants’ quarters that used to part of a larger home but was moved in 1944. The home was purchased in 1886 by Dr. Richard Patterson, who was a doctor at Bellevue Place during the time Mary Todd Lincoln had stayed there, said one docent. The original home was built in 1863.

Cathy Dremel of Batavia said she has toured homes during the house walk in previous years and said she often gets from home to home on her bike.

“I just love to see the history of some of these homes. It’s interesting that they’ve done updates but really retain the original flavor,” she said.

She added that, like the McGrails, she likes getting a peak inside.

“I’m not a decorator, but I like to see what people do,” she said. “It’s like art. I can’t do it, but I like to look at it.”

A fix for the minimum wage THE WASHINGTON POST What is to be done with the federal minimum wage – stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009, with no raise in sight?

One approach is just that.

Stay with the status quo, on the theory that a higher minimum wage is a job-killer. As House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has put it, “When you raise the price of employment, guess what happens? You get less of it.”

Backers of a higher minimum acknowledge the potential for job losses but argue that it is minor and more than offset by the benefits of a raise to low-income workers and society at large.

In the absence of congressional action, they are pushing for increases at the state and local level (19 states and the District of Columbia already have minimum wages above the federal level). On Wednesday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that will raise the minimum to $10 by 2016.

The U.S. economy needs a national policy, not a patchwork of state and local laws.

It’s time for a grand bargain on the federal minimum wage, one that recognizes that both sides in this seemingly endless debate have a point. A decent society can afford neither to price entry-level workers out of jobs nor to leave them completely without leverage in the labor market.

The first step in reforming the federal minimum wage is to index it to inflation, thus eliminating the need for an act of Congress – and a rehearsal of the shopworn arguments – before

every increase. Since there is a national consensus in favor of some minimum wage, if not its precise level, let’s take the politics out of maintaining its purchasing power.

Both business and workers would benefit from stability and certainty; a federal minimum that kept up with inflation also might discourage state and local governments from acting separately.

The second step is an increase, to make up for some of the purchasing power that has been lost in recent years.

House Democrats want $10.10, which is a return to 1968’s all-time high in real terms; President Obama has suggested $9, the 1981 level.

Given GOP opposition, neither is politically feasible.

We propose $8 an hour.

This is an easier sell politically – especially since it would be the final boost before inflation-indexing takes over.

The final element of our grand bargain is to augment the earned-income tax credit, a cash supplement to wages that works like a negative income tax. With a strong history of bipartisan support, the credit pays more than $5,300 a year to a family with two children.

It rewards work effort, lifts millions out of poverty and has offset much of the minimum wage’s recent stagnation.

In short, our plan shores up low-income wage-earners, removes a perennial irritant from the political system and does no undue harm to work incentives.

The secretary of state and the Russian foreign minister have negotiated an agreement wherein Syria is required to disclose the location of all its supplies of chemical weapons.

Subsequently, these ghastly weapons are to be turned over to international authorities and destroyed.

Russia’s motives are unclear, but I believe it thought that if we carried out a strike it would swing the balance in favor of the rebels. While we are at odds with Russia on many issues, we do seem to

isolationists. John McCain has denounced the agreement. He wants to go into a disastrous ground war totally ignoring the makeup of some of the rebels – some of whom are known to be members of al-Qaida.

Others have said the president lucked out. Perhaps he did, but – more importantly – the country and the world lucked out.

The fact is if the president and the secretary of state had not made a credible threat of military strikes and moved aircraft carriers into position, Russia would never have acted.

Stars flatten record book St. Charles North sets program mark, wins title

JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com WEST CHICAGO – The St. Charles North girls golf team’s arrival at Monday’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament was delayed when their bus suffered a flat tire, but there was nothing flat about the North Stars’ play on the St Andrews Golf & Country Club course No. 1.

A 314 team total – a school record for an 18-hole tournament – gave North an easy victory in the conference meet, and the conference championship.

Because of the flat tire, the North Stars didn’t arrive at the course until about 20 minutes before the meet started, but North coach Chris Patrick thought that actually might have helped his team.

“They didn’t have all the pressure of thinking about what was ahead of them,”

he said. “It might have been good for them just to get their minds off things.”

Freshman Kate Lillie and senior Carly Hudon each finished with 6-over-par rounds of 77 for North, putting them in a tie for fourth in the individual standings behind Waubonsie Valley junior Bing Singhsumalee, who shot a sizzling 33 on the front nine on her way to a 1-under-par 70.

“I thought I played pretty well,” Lillie said. “I hit the majority of the fairways, which helped me a lot with the approach shots, which on the front nine I hit eight of the nine greens, which was a really big bonus because I’ve never done that before.”

Lillie birdied the 284-yard first hole thanks to a long tee shot, and sank a 20-foot putt on the par-4 sixth hole for another birdie.

“I felt like I stayed in the zone for the whole entire

round,” she said. “I really concentrated on what I was doing and just made sure I was taking it one shot at a time.”

Hudon picked up a birdie on the par-5 10th hole even after hitting her drive into the trees.

“It went very well,” she said of her round. “Everything seemed to work. I stayed calm. … My drives really worked today. I think I got some 280-yard drives.”

Senior Jessica Grill added a 79 for the North Stars and freshman Gianna Furrie carded an 81.

Waubonsie Valley placed second in the meet with a team score of 327, followed by Metea Valley at 353.

Geneva placed fourth with a score of 366. Sophomore Kari Kirl and junior Mary Clare Novak each shot 89s for the Vikings.

“It was pretty tough,” Kirl said of the course. “The back

nine was harder, but the front nine I pulled through and finished out with a 44.”

Novak thought she could have finished with a score a bit lower.

“I had some putts that were off by like an inch, which is a bummer,” she said. “I did better than I thought I was going to. My score came out a lot better, so I did pretty well.”

Nicole Hassels shot a 91 for Geneva and Allie Henrie added a 97.

Batavia finished seventh in the team standings with a 380 total, led by sophomore Rebecca Hasemann’s 85, a personal best.

“I’m very proud of that today,” Hasemann said. “My dad was encouraging me throughout the entire thing. He was my motivation. It was just fun for him to be there, and he was making me shoot better.”

We’ve gotten used to Kaneland and Morris playing for all the NI Big 12 marbles the past few years, but it’s looking like Kaneland fans might want to set their Game of the Year watch a little bit earlier this season.

Morris isn’t as dangerous as usual this year, as the Yorkville Foxes made clear Friday when they took down the Redskins for the irst time since 1962. Bet that went over well in Morris.

Looks like Sycamore, like Kaneland, 5-0, is going

to be the Knights’ biggest threat the rest of the way.

The Knights and Spartans are due to meet Oct. 18 in Sycamore, and Sly can only imagine the atmosphere for that one if the teams can stay spotless between now and then.

That won’t be easy, especially for Sycamore, which has to travel to Morris and Rochelle the next two weeks.

Geneva thoroughly dominated St. Charles North during the first half of Friday’s 35-28 Vikings win, with Vikings defensive end Billy Douds supplying the exclamation point.

Douds delivered a powerful jolt to St. Charles North quarterback Erik Miller in the first quarter, jarring the ball loose deep in North territory and setting up the Vikings’ second touchdown. “[Geneva defensive end Matt Loberg] came around the edge, we got a push up the middle, and I got around [North offensive lineman Chase Gianacakos],” Douds said. “And Chase is a great player, we battled it out all winter long. I just got around, and sandwiched [Miller].”

Douds is highly familiar with Gianacakos – the North Stars’ 288-pound, Michigan State-bound left tackle – from offseason workouts.

“We went to Don Beebe’s academy together,” Douds said. “We were going up against each other 10, 15 times a night, every Wednesday night. We got some good reps in.”

Douds, 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, acknowledged dealing with Gianacakos’ brawn caught up with him as the game unfolded. After a poor start, North scored 21 unanswered points to make a game of it.

“He really wore me down in the third quarter,” Douds said. “He was pushing me back on their run plays, but I knew if I got a good jump on him, I’d get his hands off me, and get around him.”

Douds leads the Vikings with 2½ sacks this season and is fourth on the Vikings’ defense with 25 tackles.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said Douds has improved at setting an edge for the Vikings’ defense.

“Billy has gotten better week to week to week,” Wicinski said. “We’ve really been working hard on keeping his contain. The first week against Oswego, and against [Wheaton North] and Batavia, he was inside a lot, people were breaking down our defense. We told Billy this is it, man,

East wins in 3 KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team regrouped from a Game 1 loss Monday to knock off Downers Grove South, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18.

Anne Hughes had 23 digs and four aces while fellow junior Megan Schildmeyer contributed 12 kills and 13 digs for the Saints ( 1 5 - 4 ) , w h o Carly Jimenez played with a short-handed lineup. Carly Jimenez had 25 assists.

Sydney Urban (five kills, five blocks) and Dana Voltolina (five kills, block) were among the Saints’ other main contributors.

Aurora Central Catholic 2, Guerin 0 (25-6, 25-14): At River Grove, Andrea Bieritz had 12 assists and four service aces to pace ACC (8-17) to the Suburban Christian Conference crossover win.

BOYS SOCCER Batavia 3, Wheaton Warrenville South 0: At Batavia, the host Bulldogs dominated on senior night, getting scores from Kevin Collins, Adam Heinz and Jeff Lorden.

The Bulldogs (9-2-2) pulled away after leading 1-0 at halftime. Goalkeepers Nick Foster and John Faraone combined on the shutout.

Burlington Central 8, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Sean Fitzgerald scored five goals as Central (13-1, 8-0 Big Northern East) routed Marengo to win its 11th straight match. Matt O’Connor and Paolo Sespene each had a goal and two assists for the Rockets.

Wheaton Academy 3, Wheaton North 0: At Wheaton, Wheaton Academy (10-2-1) prevailed behind goals from Jacob Fernandes, Ty Seager and Grant Rougas.

BOYS GOLF South Elgin triangular: Marmion (158) defeated second-place Batavia (160) and host South Elgin in the triangular meet at Bartlett Hills. The Cadets’ Luke Hoss shot a 1-under-par 35 while teammates Ricky Angsten (40), Joe Fritz (41) and Jackson Clark (42) also chipped in.

“My approach shots wouldn’t reach the green, so I’d have to chip on almost every hole,” she said. “And then I’d still two-putt. I was playing bogey golf today.”

“I feel very good [going into regional play],” Hudon said. “I feel like I got control of my game, finally. We found one little flaw [in my swing] the other week and I think it’s really coming around now.”

Singhsumalee won Player of the Year honors in the conference after winning a one-hole playoff with Neuqua Valley sophomore Jessica Yuen.

If Girardi decides to return to the Yankees or join a broadcast booth – he has three children and has spoken about how a TV job could help him be home more often – then the Cubs likely will turn to another candidate with managerial experience.

Perhaps Mike Scioscia would come to the North Side if he parts ways with the gigantic mess that is the Los Angeles Angels of Suburban Los Angeles. Ron Gardenhire signed a two-year deal to stay with the Minnesota Twins, so cross his name off of the list.

There must be at least a few other qualified candidates.

Hey, does anybody have Lou Piniella’s cellphone number?

(Better question: Does Sweet Lou have a cellphone?)

It’s fun to speculate on the Cubs’ next hire (well, maybe not fun for Sveum), but all of this commotion serves a valuable purpose for the Cubs’ front-office fraternity. We’re focusing on available managers instead of scrutinizing Epstein, who is on Day 707 of building a better tomorrow.

We’re evaluating Sveum instead of grading the moves of general manager Jed Hoyer and scouting director Jason McLeod, whose top prospect (Javier Baez) actually was drafted by former general manager Jim Hendry.

Maybe Sveum would have turned out to be a great manager, or maybe he would have proved to be a dud. We never will know, at least not at Clark and Addison, because he never had a chance to manage a legitimate major league team.

Maybe Girardi or someone else can help to turn things around. Until then, Epstein is left with a team filled with questions and an official statement filled with words.

CHICAGO – Here in the City of Long Winters, baseball is finished until 2014.

Oh, well. At least we have word games.

The Cubs fired manager Dale Sveum on Monday after two miserable seasons on the North Side. Sveum was given a Triple-A ball club and produced Triple-A results, losing 101 games in his first season and 96 games this year.

Yet wins and losses were not the reason why Sveum was dumped with one year remaining on his deal, as Cubs wizard Theo Epstein told reporters at Wrigley Field. Instead, Sveum was canned because the team needed “a dynamic new voice,” perhaps so dynamic that it could sing along during the seventh-inning stretch.

Anyway, Epstein issued a five-paragraph, 589-word opus regarding his decision. Most of us are too busy to fuss with such word counts, so I went ahead and selected a handful of my favorite words that Epstein included in his statement.

Painful.

Patient.

Winning.

Soon.

Tomorrow.

Context, schmontext. Who needs the other 584 words when you’ve got those five?

They tell the story of the modern-day Cubs, 105 years and counting without a title.

On the surface, the Cubs’ decision to fire Sveum seems cold and misguided. He wasn’t the one who plopped down $52 million for 18-game loser Edwin Jackson, a 30-year-old journeyman. He wasn’t the one who hyped up young players such as Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro.

Now, Sveum won’t be the one trying to make chicken salad out of lineup cards.

Which person will accept that job?

Most of the chatter has focused on Yankees manager Joe Girardi, a Peoria native and Northwestern alum who has a 642-492 career record and a 2009 World Series title on his managerial resumé. A series of bad contracts is catching up to the Yankees, who missed the playoffs for the first time in five years, and it’s possible Girardi would like a fresh start with a franchise that likely is willing to meet his price.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Expectations have risen so high for the St. Charles East boys soccer team that even a tournament championship isn’t a cause for celebration – at least not how the Saints won this one.

East played Streamwood to a scoreless tie Saturday at Norris Stadium in the championship game of the Saints’ home tournament. The Saints, though, were named tournament champions based on superior victory margins during pool play.

Still, suffice it to say East’s players didn’t drain their energy for Saturday night’s homecoming dance much in the tournament’s aftermath.

“I think you just have to look at the reaction to it to know what we feel this was,” East coach Paul Jennison said.

“We feel as though it was a game dropped rather than a tournament won. … We have high expectations.”

The unbeaten Saints – either 10-0-2 or 10-0-3, depending on the still undetermined handling of a match against Waubonsie Valley that was suspended – encountered a Streamwood team that played soundly in its own end and

The Saints had a first-half goal disallowed because of an off-sides call but produced far fewer high-end chances than they usually do. East junior forward Zach Manibog said the Sabres (10-2-2) compare favorably to some of the quality opponents the Saints have encountered.

“They’re definitely up there,” Manibog said. “They’re really good.”

With the second-half wind advantage, the Sabres nearly handed the Saints their first defeat as Streamwood’s Brian Benitez had two prime chances about 20 seconds apart, the first stopped by Saints goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto, the second ricocheting off the crossbar. That sequence came

with about 5 minutes to go in the match.

Streamwood coach Matt Polovin was proud of the Sabres’ showing.

“To hold them to zeros, and to have a couple good chances for us to win, that’s phenomenal for these guys,” Polovin said.

Streamwood is due back at Norris Stadium on Thursday for the teams’ Upstate Eight

Conference River match.

“To be honest, I think it’s going to be more difficult for them than us because they’re coming back into our place,” Jennison said. “They’ve already put in a fantastic performance, and I’m sure Matt was extremely happy with the way they defended, but at the same time, I felt we still had the lion’s share of possession and I thought we did have the majority of the game at our disposal, so therefore I think going forward our lads will be recharged and ready to try and get one back for having a draw here.”

Before then, East will take part in today’s Tri-Cities doubleheader. The Saints will take on host Geneva in the nightcap, and Jennison looks forward to seeing whether the Burgess Field turf will help rekindle the Saints’ offense.

“The bounce is true and the ball moves quickly, and that’s the way we play,” Jennison said. “I think unfortunately [at East’s field], the first couple weeks our field was beautiful, but now, a couple of football games later, a bit of sunshine, it’s going to catch up. The quicker we get out there and get back out to a flat-top surface, I think it’s going to suit our game to no end.”

Chargers hold their own in massive invitational

By JAKE POWERS jpowers@shawmedia.com AURORA – Aurora Central Catholic had a successful showing on its home course during the Charger Nation Cross Country Classic by finishing second in the boys competition and fourth on the girls side Saturday morning.

The meet, held at Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora, featured 34 teams, including a handful of teams from out of state. The meet was split into two divisions based on an enrollment cutoff of about 800, Aurora Central Catholic coach Troy Kerber said.

“This is our first year of

going divisional because the meet’s grown so much that in order to properly facilitate a clean start, we had to go to divisions this year,” Kerber said.

In the Blue Division on the boys side, which consisted of schools with a smaller enrollment, Rockford Christian (51) led the way, with ACC (73), St. Francis (77), Rock Falls (109), and Westmont (166) rounding out the top five.

ACC senior Javier Montelongo finished in third place overall with a time of 15:47.9.

He attributed his familiarity with the course at Oakhurst to his success.

“It feels like it’s familiar

so that usually helps,” Montelongo said. “It was pretty much the same old. I’m used to running on the course because I run here five days a week.”

Kerber was impressed with Montelongo’s effort and with the cohesive effort that the team brought to the meet.

“So far their best team race 1 through 5 all year,” Kerber said. “We wanted to narrow the split gaps. But Javier’s been racing well all year. He’s had to shift his mind from being more of a midfront runner to more of a front-pack runner and he’s starting to get there and believe in himself.”

In the boys Gold Division, Batavia scored a 101 to finish in third place behind Trinity (63) and Linn-Marr (81), and ahead of Normal University High (140) and Oswego East (150). St. Charles East placed six with a score of 162.

Batavia senior Mitch Zabka finished with a time of 15:08.6 to earn fifth place.

“This course is so flat and it puts the right mindset in your head,” Zabka said.

“There’s not a lot of uphills, it’s a lot of downhill, a lot of flat. And I just love running through the woods. I just felt really good today.”

Batavia coach Mike DiDomenico called his team’s per-

formance the best he’s seen out of them this season.

In the girls Blue Division race, St. Francis took first with a score of 63, Westmont finished second with 72, Rock Falls came in third with 102, ACC finished in fourth with 103 and Timothy Christian rounded out the top five with a score of 108.

ACC’s Karina Liz came in sixth place overall with a time of 19:06.1 despite having to run with an IT band injury.

The girls Gold Division was led by Linn-Marr (70), followed by St. Ignatius (82), Normal University High (87), Metea Valley (104) and West Chicago (134).

Ball State is now 2-0 in MAC play after its 31-24 win Saturday over Toledo, while the Rockets fall to 1-1, but still aren’t out of the division race.

“I thought it was a really hard-fought football game,” Toledo coach Matt Campbell said. “Their kids made a few more plays to win the game.”

After throwing for 335 yards Saturday, Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning is one of two quarterbacks in FBS to throw for 300 or more yards in every game.

NIU football coach Rod Carey has never been someone to talk about national rankings.

After NIU’s 55-24 win at Purdue on Saturday, the Huskies earned the No. 23 spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll, and came in just outside The Associated Press Top 25, finishing 26th with 104 votes.

However, Carey isn’t going to worry about this stuff now. “[Rankings] don’t mean a whole lot, really until the end of the year,” he said. “It must mean people respect us, and that’s great. Really happy with that.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Old toys are very different from those made today. Toymakers of long ago did not try to encourage creativity. A toy was made to resemble a known part of life - a house, car or pet - or perhaps a fantasy - a rocketship or robot. Or they were puzzles meant to teach the alphabet or arithmetic, or character dolls from stories that told of good behavior or gave lessons from the Bible. In the late19th century, a group of cast-iron bell-ringer toys became popular.

These were pull toys with a platform and four wheels. The figures on the platform moved when the toy’s wheels turned. The “Trick Elephant Bell Ringer,” with its name in raised letters on the side, was made by the Gong Bell Manufacturing Co. of East Hampton, Conn. When the toy was pulled, the wheels moved and the elephant turned and hit the bell.

The elephant stands on a pierced and painted platform, suggesting that he is a circus performer. The painted iron toy, about 5 inches high and 8 inches long, sold for $1,230 at a Skinner auction in Boston. *** Q: My wife bought what our family refers to as “our dog chair” at a garage sale for $9. It was in a great deal of disrepair and we had it professionally redone. It’s made of walnut, upholstered in leather, and has carved dog’s heads at the end of each arm. The dogs’ faces and collars are slightly different from one another. We were told that one is a female and the other male. I’m not sure if that makes sense. What can you tell me about this chair?

A: Chairs with arms that end in animal heads were popular in Victorian times and later. Dog heads are the ones most often found. Your chair is unusual because the heads are slightly different, but whether or not they represent a male and female dog is something only the maker would know. It’s not possible to give an accurate value for your chair since the maker and age are unknown, but you can be sure that your wife got a good value for $9 and an interesting conversation piece after it was refurbished.

A: Louis Marx and Co. was founded in New York City in 1919 and closed in 1978. In the early 1950s, it was the largest toy company in the world. The value of your unopened dollhouse set depends on the house’s design and size. It could sell for $200 to $350. (A furnished house that has been played with would sell for only about $25 to $50.) *** Q: I have a perfect set of dishes, marked “Monarch China, Made in Occupied Japan, Montana Rose.”

Q: My grandfather gave me a beautiful little cup about 50 years ago, when I was a little girl. I don’t remember ever hearing any history about it. It’s made of some type of metal and stands about 8 inches high. Filmmakers explore cruel reality of markets

For the past 20 years, my assignment at The Washington Post has been to explain and interpret arcane and complicated economic developments to general readers in ways that are interesting, relevant and credible. It’s left me with deep admiration for those who do it well — a list that now includes two young documentarians, Jim Bruce and Jacob Kornbluth.

Neither Bruce (“Money for Nothing”) nor Kornbluth (“Inequality for All”) has much of an economics background.

Bruce worked on films such as the horror flick “Freddy vs. Jason.” Kornbluth wrote and directed several indie dramas and stage productions in Los Angeles.

You get the sense that both originally came to their projects with an ideological agenda. Bruce, from the right, to expose the dangers of the Federal Reserve’s easy-money policies; Kornbluth, from the left, to show how the hollowing out of the middle class is undermining our economy and our democracy. Yet despite their ideological motives, both have produced subtle, sophisticated and compelling economic arguments that are well grounded in fact and solid analysis.

The theme of “Money for Nothing” is that it’s not free markets that are to blame for the recent economic crisis but instead the well-meaning but excessive manipulation of those markets by a Federal Reserve that clings arrogantly to the conceit that it can successfully micromanage the ups and downs of the economic cycle.

In Bruce’s telling, it was the Fed’s easy-money policies that created the stock market bubble of the 1990s and the real estate bubble of the past decade.

And when those bubbles burst and the economy teetered, it was the Fed that compounded its mistakes by riding to the rescue with yet more easy money to bail out the banks, the financial markets and an ailing economy.

This dangerous addiction to easy money was confirmed a few weeks ago when the Fed announced that it would continue to pump an additional $85 billion into the financial system each month rather than proceed with plans to finally begin reducing the extraordinary monetary stimulus begun five years before. On cue, the stock market rallied to new highs. As narrator Liev Schreiber

The chief villain of Bruce’s tale is former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan, whose undue faith in the self-correcting nature of free markets was exceeded only by his excessive faith in his own ability to manipulate them. Ben Bernanke, the current chairman and Greenspan’s successor, also is portrayed in a harsh light, not only for embracing Greenspan’s cavalier attitude toward bubbles but also for his willingness, in the name of economic stability, to print gobs of money to prop up financial markets once the bubble burst — and then deny that’s what he’s doing.

What makes “Inequality for All” a more entertaining and affecting film is that it features real-world characters who allow it to be more human.

You can’t help but empathize with the young Hispanic couple who have fallen out of the middle class and now live on an economic cushion of a full tank of gas, a pantry full of canned goods and $25 in the checking account. You share the quiet anger of the once-comfortable Mormon couple whose conservative beliefs give way to union activism when faced with the reality of declining wages and record corporate profits. You revel in the honesty of the wealthy Seattle business owner who can’t figure out why he even needs the $10 million he made last year and acknowledges he’s no more of a “jobcre-

ator,” to use the familiar Republican construction, than the customers who buy his pillows.

The strength of “Inequality for All” is that it doesn’t demonize rich people. Reich sees the growing gap between haves and have-nots as the result of long-term forces such as globalization and technology acting on a free-market system.

His pitch, however, is that the large and growing gap between the rich and everyone else is neither desirable nor inevitable but can be reversed by tweaking the rules by which markets operate and refashioning the political, social and legal contexts in which capitalism exists.

And that, ultimately, is what links these two illuminating documentaries — their shared vision of a more sustainable and widely shared prosperity based not on easy money or squeezing workers wages but on the things that have always generated long-term economic growth: investment in education, basic research, the latest technology and modern public infrastructure.

Bruce is not some gold bug who insists on doing away with the Federal Reserve, just as Kornbluth is not a closet socialist hankering for government to micromanage the economy and massively redistribute wealth. What they give voice to in both films is a deep frustration with an economy that is not delivering and a political system that seems incapable of doing anything about it.

Help your doctor find the time to treat you right Dear Doctor K: I like my doctor and I trust his judgment, but I don’t feel he really listens to me or explains things. What can I do, besides look for another doctor?

Dear Reader: Like every doctor, I am a patient as well as a doctor.

I think I can see things from both perspectives. Let me respond first as a patient.

If you like and trust your doctor, I’d recommend that you put him to the test before looking for another. At your next visit, gently but firmly make certain things clear: Suppose he says something you don’t understand. Tell him you’re sorry, but you don’t understand. Ask him to explain it again.

Suppose he recommends a particular diagnostic test or treatment. If you’re concerned about the risk, the cost or something else, tell him that, and explain why. If he mentions risks, be sure he tells you how likely the risks are. (Don’t expect a precise answer, but ask for a rough estimate: one in 10, one in 100, one in 1,000?)

Suppose, after hearing the answer, you don’t like the doctor’s recommended test or treatment.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Then ask him if there are any other options that you both should consider.

Suppose you’re dealing with a potentially serious illness, or a test or treatment that has serious risks – a diagnosis of cancer, or a major operation, for example. If you’re not sure you agree with the option your doctor has suggested, you can always seek a second opinion. This is not something to do lightly: At least initially, you won’t have the same level of trust for another physician, since you won’t know him or her as well as you know your doctor.

Suppose, despite your gentle prodding, it becomes clear your doctor just isn’t interested in having you involved in making decisions about your medical care. It happens. In that case, I’d start looking for another doctor.

Now let me respond as a doctor. One of the hardest things for us is finding the time to do everything we need to do during

a patient visit, given the time we have. That includes time for listening and explaining. You can help your doctor by making your time with him as efficient as possible.

If you have a chronic illness, remember the questions your doctor asks you at most visits. Be ready to answer the same questions at this visit. For example, if you have diabetes, think about whether you have symptoms that could indicate heart problems, such as chest pain or feeling as though you might pass out.

If you tend to forget what the doctor said at the visit, consider bringing someone with you – a spouse, adult child or friend.

That person can help make sure certain questions get asked. He or she can also take notes while you speak with your doctor. The time you spend with your doctor is precious to both of you. Come prepared to make the most of your visit.

Dr. Wallace: My parents are getting a divorce, and my dad has already left our house. I’m 13, and I feel like it is my fault that they are splitting up.

I always played one against the other, and if my mom wouldn’t let me do something, I always went to my dad and he would almost always say yes. Then the two of them would always get into a huge argument about it, and I would feel bad, but I don’t know why I kept doing it.

I’ve tried to talk to both of them about this and apologize for doing it and promised not to do it again, but they said it wasn’t my fault and not to think that way. But they are still going to get a divorce.

You are probably not aware of many other more serious problems in their marriage that have caused this divorce. Your parents are incompatible, and that is the reason for their split. Most children play one parent against the other from time to time if their parents let them get away with it. And when they get away with it, this is also a signal that the parents have lost control and are not even united in their rule setting for their child. So, please stop blaming yourself.

A family split-up is devastating for everyone, but it has an extremely traumatic effect on the children. I understand how difficult things are right now for everyone and offer my deepest sympathy. Now is the time for you both

Dear Abby: I am writing in response to “Anonymous in Wisconsin,” the cancer survivor whose husband has lost interest in her after her double mastectomy. I am OUTRAGED by his insensitivity and lack of love. She deserves better.

I am a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with breast cancer seven months after I was married.

Prior to my decision to have a radical mastectomy, I offered my husband the chance to leave. The prospect of children, which we had discussed and was important to us, was uncertain because of my subsequent chemotherapy. He said, “You would not leave me. We will adopt.”

On our first wedding anniversary I was bald, and he treated me to a beautiful, romantic getaway.

He was supportive from day one.

Fifteen years later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer again. I had another radical mastectomy followed by chemo and reconstruction. Abby, my husband again made me feel beautiful even when I didn’t. However, declarer usually faces various dangers. In today’s deal, he must work to keep a particular opponent off the lead.

South cruises into four spades. West, who overcalled in clubs, leads the diamond king.

In the modern style, North responded three spades, showing a weak hand with four-card spade support. With a game-invitational hand, North would have cuebid three clubs. This is a good idea because it allows responder to bid both constructively and obstructively.

Declarer starts with nine top tricks (six spades, two hearts and one diamond) and hopes to establish dummy’s heart suit.

But he is in danger of losing four tricks: one heart, one diamond and two clubs. However, he risks losing those two clubs only if East gains lead.

South must duck at the first trick – avoidance play number one. East’s careful play of the diamond jack indicates that he also has the 10, a potential entry card.

Then, after taking the second trick with his diamond ace, declarer draws trumps ending on the board and leads a low heart to his 10 -- avoidance play number two. West wins with his queen, but cannot do better than cash the club ace to stop an overtrick.

Note that if South takes the first trick or plays off three rounds of hearts, East gets on lead to push a club through South’s king.
