‘Flying cigars’ on wing in region GOOD NATURED Pam Otto If the answer is “flying cigars,” what do you suppose the question might be?

If you said something involving George Burns, Groucho Marx and an airplane, you’re gifted (or burdened) with the same weird sense of humor I have ... but you’d be incorrect.

A more suitable response, at least here, in a nature column, might be, “What is a fantastically appropriate nickname for those little sooty gray birds, the chimney swifts?”

Maybe it’s my love for an occasional Macanudo, or maybe it’s the remarkable aspects of their life cycle, but I just can’t help but love chimney swifts. Each spring these neotropical migrants make their way from South America to the eastern United States and southern Canada, with a flip trip in fall, flying as many as 4,000 miles each way on wings that measure a scant 12 inches across.

In our area from May through September, Chaetura pelagica spends its days flying around catching insects and its nights clinging to sheltered, vertical surfaces.

You won’t see swifts perched in trees with other birds.

Their short, weak legs and tiny, clawed feet won’t allow it. Nonetheless, chimney swifts are well adapted to their ecological niche – even though the setting for that niche has changed dramatically over the last 200 years.

Before European settlement, North American chimney swifts made their homes inside caves and hollow trees. But with the settlers came brick and mortar – and chimneys – and voila, a behavior shift was born. Today, chimney swifts are nearly 100 percent dependent on humans for nesting habitat – a predicament they share with another summer visitor, the purple martin. (You may recall hearing, purple martins in the eastern U.S. nest exclusively in martin houses erected by humans.)

A blurry swirl of “flying cigars,” also known as chimney swifts, can be seen circling the stone chimney at the Swanson Pool building at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles. Although swifts are relatively easy to find around the Tri-Cities, the loss of old brick chimneys – this bird’s habitat – has caused them to be listed as a common bird in steep decline by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Because of this similarity, and the way both martins and swifts devour insects, you’d be inclined to think the two species are related. But actually, the swifts’ closest relatives are hummingbirds.

The resemblance may not be obvious, but if you can picture a hummingbird in flight, you can start to understand the relationship. Both birds share a similar skeletal structure that causes their wings to beat stiffly, shallowly – and rapidly.

In flight, hummingbirds look like miniature helicopters, darting and hovering, then occasionally resting on a convenient perch or twig.

Chimney swifts, however, have a flight pattern that may be best described as erratic. It’s not that they lack direction, heavens no. To the contrary, their constant swerving and diving is directly related to the insect prey they capture, and consume, on the wing.

Thanks to this lasting stretch of warm weather and cool, but not frosty, evenings, chimney swifts can still be seen in our area, even though we are almost into October.

But because their swooping after insects can take them far from their chimney roosts, their daytime locations can be unpredictable.

At dusk, though, if you’re lucky, you can see swifts by the hundreds swirling down into their chimneys for the night. The trick is finding the right sort of structure. Their preferred “habitat” is an area of older buildings that feature brick chimneys that are neither lined nor capped.

The Tri-Cities still have a few of these structures remaining. (There’s also a neat project underway to create chimney swift “towers,” but that’s another story for another time.)

What I was most surprised to learn though, just the other day, was that there are swifts roosting in the chimney of a place that I drive by almost daily: the Swanson Pool building at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles. Alert reader Bruce Rowland noted that there are hundreds of swifts roosting there, in the chimney near the concession stand at the south end of the building.

Bruce emailed on Sunday and I went to check out the spectacle Monday. It began just before 7 p.m. and was over around 7:10. If you’d like to see for yourself, remember to adjust for our ever-shrinking amount of daylight and aim to arrive around 6:45.

‘The best time of the year’ STC East homecoming parade route stirs feelings with attendees, participants

T. CHARLES – Talking over music from a nearby float, 18-year-old Shawn Hendle expressed her enthusiasm Friday for the St. Charles East High School homecoming parade, which was about to begin.

“Everyone’s really stoked for it,” the high school senior said. “It’s like the best time of the year, honestly.”

But the location of the St. Charles East’s homecoming parade disappointed some.

For the third consecutive year, participants marched down Illinois Street, not the traditional route of Main Street.

The parade route, which was the same as last week’s homecoming parade for St. Charles North High School, changed in 2011 because of construction on East Main Street.

Hendle experienced the parade on Main Street as an underclassman. Illinois Street is a nice setting, she said, but Main Street – whose storefront windows are painted by students for homecoming week – offers a better atmosphere.

“The seniors are kind of bummed,” she said.

Watching the parade from the Illinois Street bridge, alumna and freshman parent Joan Devor said she understands why the route was changed. She expects the parade will return to Main Street next year since the road construction will be finished, she said.

Reasons to hold the parade on Main Street include tradition and the prominence of the roadway, she said.

“It’s our main street in town,” Devor said.

St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin said Friday it is too early to say whether the parade will return to Main Street next year.

through the city’s special events process, he said. A committee weighs the pros

and cons of the requests, he said, and makes a recommendation to the St. Charles

City Council.

“We try to take all things into consideration,” Lamkin said, listing detour routes and costs as factors.

From the police department’s perspective, he said, the new route has worked out well in terms of managing the crowds and traffic.

Sophomore Keith Dwyer – this year’s Mr. Orange and Black – said he is OK with

having the parade on Illinois Street.

“It’s safer to have it on Illinois than Main Street,” the 15-year-old said.

As a mother of two East graduates and a current sophomore, Jennifer Cataldo said she has attended the homecoming parade for eight years. She said the location didn’t bother her.

“It’s fun wherever it is,” Cataldo said.

She said her daughter – who marched in the parade with the band – doesn’t seem to care about the location, either.

“She was excited to be a part of it,” Cataldo said.

• Someone living in the 1000 block of Schonback Court reported to police on Thursday, Sept. 19, about receiving a call from a man claiming he was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent out of Washington, D.C. The man claimed the person had purchased Xanax over the Internet through the Dominican Republic, which is illegal.

According to reports, the man said a warrant would be issued for the person’s arrest. When asked for the IP address of the order, the man hung up. Batavia police called the number from the caller ID and spoke to the man, who informed police he did not have a warrant for the victim and hung up. Officials from the Washington, D.C., DEA office advised Batavia police they were aware of the suspect and are tracking him.

“To be that bright and be seen when the sun is up, it would have had to have been a meter wide or bigger … and weigh in the thousands of pounds.”

The meteor that fell would be an asteroid, a comet or a piece of a comet that comes into Earth’s atmosphere and falls at speeds of 25,000 to 160,000 miles per hour.

A comet is a giant dirty ice ball Hankey said.

When a meteor is large enough to pass through Earth’s atmosphere and hit the ground, it is called a meteorite.

A fireball, which is what happened Thursday, is a meteor that burns brighter than any planet or star, Hankey said.

“It ablates – like when the space shuttle comes in and the tiles get ripped off because of heat and friction,” Hankey said. “There is so much pressure ... it shatters, 50 percent to 80 percent of it is gone just to melting. All that energy is released through explosion, and then it’s a fireball moving through the sky – boom – and it’s gone.”

The fireball that hit Russia on Feb. 15 was larger, estimated to be 15 to 17 meters in size, Hankey said. Though it injured 1,000 people when it landed, it was big enough to have taken out a whole city, he said.

Marcinek was gratified to learn that hundreds of people saw the same thing.

“I took a dime and held it at arm’s length,” Marcinek said.

“It was the diameter of a dime.

To me, it was big.”

MOOSEHEART – The Junior League of Kane and DuPage Counties is hosting its third annual Readers on the Run 5K and Kids Fun Run fundraiser Sunday at Mooseheart Child City and School, which is near Batavia.

BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Three minutes after 6 a.m. Thursday, Ronald Marcinek was standing outside his house and saw a huge fireball flash through the morning sky.

“The sky was still dark at that time, but dawn was starting to break,” Marcinek said.

“I just caught it out of the corner of my eye. It fell south of Elburn, north of Sugar Grove and east of Route 47. I saw it for maybe three seconds, but boy – that thing was big.”

Marcinek, 71, who lives in the Winden Oaks subdivision near Elburn, said it was so large, he could see flames coming off the back end. He said he stayed outside a long time to see whether it landed somewhere nearby and started a fire.

“It went right behind the tall trees, and then it was gone,” Marcinek said. “I did not hear an impact.”

The fireball was a meteorite that traveled east to west in central Indiana, said Mike Hankey, amateur astronomer and operations manager of the American Meteor Society.

He said the society received more than 700 reports of the fireball sighting. The website, www.amsmeteors.org, lists reports from Ohio, Kentucky,

Yorkville businessman to launch campaign for secretary of state KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – A Yorkville businessman will host an event Monday night in Sugar Grove, in which he will launch his campaign to pursue the Republican nomination to become Illinois secretary of state.

Will Lindsay, 40, will appear at the event at 6 p.m.

Monday at the Sugar Grove Community House, 141 Main St., Sugar Grove. An event billed as a “FUNdraiser” will take place until 8 p.m.

Lindsay will be seeking the position currently held

by Democrat Jesse White, who will be aiming for his fifth term. The event will be hosted by Sugar Grove Trustee Kevin Geary, who is the campaign treasurer.

“It’s time to bring a fresh voice and a conservative perspective to the secretary of state’s office in Illinois,” Lindsay was quoted as saying in a news release issued Friday. “If elected, I will not only bring the [Department of Motor Vehicles] into the 21st century, but I will also make it easier for entrepreneurs like myself to create small businesses.”

According to the release,

Lindsay is an entrepreneur who has been involved in industries, such as telecom, real estate sports and management and has been a consultant for large and small businesses.

The family recently lived in Geneva before moving to Yorkville.

In the release, Lindsay praised White but said it is time for a change.

“While Secretary White may have done a good job in the past, it is time to bring a fresh voice with a business knowledge to the secretary of state’s office,” Lindsay said in the release.

This past week, I kept trying to make a connection between hot, dry weather and sphinx moths, which need plants for feeding, and soft ground in which they can pupate.

Coming up dry, literally, I sent an email to Sam W.

Heads, Ph.D., curator of orthoptera and fossil insects at the Illinois Natural History Survey in Champaign.

In two easy sentences, Sam gave a very reasonable explanation for what we’ve been seeing.

“Hyles lineata is known to go through these population explosions every once in a while, sometimes to the extent of becoming a minor agricultural pest. As I understand it, these booms in numbers tend to follow periods of rain that encourage the growth of larval food plants.”

So there you have it. The sphinx moths we’ve been seeing lately, the ones that look like odd little hummingbirds hovering in front of flowers, owe their boom not to last year’s drought, but to the rains we experienced earlier this year. Thank you, Dr. Heads!

GENEVA – Mark Raymond Hamilton of Geneva, former longtime resident of Batavia, passed away at his home on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at the age of 49 from duodenal cancer.

He was born on June 7, 1964, in Hazel Crest, the son of Carol Townsend and Stewart Hamilton.

Mark was united in marriage to Julie Cook from Batavia on Oct. 21, 1989. He was a pilot at United Airlines for 17 years based out of O’Hare Airport.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Julie; son Max; father, Stewart, and stepmother, Leigh; two sisters, Sue (Mike) Tait and Pam (Scott) Blomquist; a stepsister, Lindsay (Aaron) Locke; and his many nieces and nephews, Joey, Zach, Elisa, Thomas, Noah, Madeline, Ragen and Lucy.

She was united in marriage to Carl F. Witschonke on Oct. 6, 1945, in Wauwatosa, Wis. In 1953, Ruth and her husband, Carl, moved to Batavia. Ruth was always active in the community serving as church organist at Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years, doing volunteer work at Delnor Hospital, volunteering with the Batavia Historical Society and many others. She was also employed by the Batavia library for a number of years.

She is survived by her two sons, Carl F. (Carolyn) Witschonke of Annandale, Va., and Ross (Patricia) Witschonke of Cape Haze, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Shawna) Witschonke, Katherine (Duane) McKenna, Cary Ann (Frank) Germann, Laurie (Greg) Opaczewski, Lynn, Paul and Phillip Peterson; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; a daughter, Christine Peterson; and a brother, Earl Rossman.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road, Batavia, where she will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Ronald W. Weidler will officiate.

Interment will be at West Batavia Cemetery in Batavia.

Barbara Lebin, 69, of the 0-99 block of Bedford Lane, Geneva, was driving a 2009 Toyota Venza and failed to stop for a fully marked police car with lights on about 7:45 a.m. Sept. 17 in the curb lane of the 1200 block of West State Street, Geneva, according to reports.

When Lebin struck the police car, a 2013 Ford Taurus with 19,000 miles, it pushed the vehicle into a 2004 Suzuki ZL-7 that the officer had

pulled over, according to reports. Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said in an email that the patrol car was totaled.

Nash said once police have a cost, they will take a request to replace the patrol car to the Geneva City Council.

Patrolman Christopher Reading, 26, drove himself to Dreyer Medical Clinic on Fabyan Parkway for treatment, according to the report. Nash said the officer is fine.

BATAVIA – Hundreds of people are expected to participate Saturday in the seventh annual Hike for Hospice 5K Run/Walk to raise money for Fox Valley Hospice and remember a loved one who has died.

The hike is a 5K loop that begins and ends at the Peg Bond Center at the Batavia Riverwalk, at Island Avenue and Houston Street. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk will begin at 10 a.m.

Last year’s walk raised about $20,000 for the nonprofit, volunteer-driven Fox Valley Hospice, said Kathy Melone, director of development for Fox Valley Hospice. Most teams or walkers are walking in memory of a loved one, she said.

“It’s a way for people to come together to celebrate the life of someone they might have recently lost,” she said.

St. Charles location will reopen Oct. 29

ra is closed again.

The restaurant reopened in June with a new owner after being closed for about a year. But it recently closed again after the new partnership fell apart, said Wendi Rose, president of Chicago Tastee Freez.

“Unfortunately, those things do happen,” she said.

“The store is closed until

things get reorganized.”

One of the partners has stepped forward and will take over the store, Rose said.

Plans are to reopen the store by March, she said.

In the meantime, Tastee Freez will make improvements at the site, including installing new signs and lights, Rose said.

Please encourage adults to take some of these courses.

Combating childhood obesity epidemic an important mission We want what’s best for our children, which is why we all should be paying attention to the childhood obesity epidemic in our country.

More importantly, we all should be acting to reverse this troubling trend.

In 1980, U.S. children ages 6 to 11 and 12 to 19 held obesity rates of 7 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

By 2010, obesity rates in both age groups had increased to 18 percent, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. A third of American children are considered to be overweight or obese.

Causes for the problem vary, but commonly include

societal change, such as children spending more time in front of TVs, computers and gaming systems. And the food we eat – inexpensive fast food and soda, filled with empty calories and sold in large quantities – fits better into our on-the-go lifestyles than taking time to cook a healthy meal.

It would seem to be a problem with a simple solution – eat better and increase physical activity, and children should be healthier.

But the problem is behavioral, not logical. And it’s anything but simple.

In addition to the risk of increased health problems, such as diabetes or asthma, overweight children are

more susceptible to bullying from their peers.

Their unhealthy habits likely will continue into adulthood. There could be long-term mental health issues.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness month, which is why the Kane County Chronicle presented a three-day series this week on the epidemic.

It was heartening to learn about the numerous local agencies and organizations that have realized the need to act and educate children and adults about childhood obesity and its risks.

programs that incorporate additional physical activity into their students’ days.

Vending machines – if available at all in schools – offer healthier fare than candy bars and soda.

Both Cadence Health and Presence Mercy Medical Center offer programs to help children who have been diagnosed with being overweight lead healthier lives.

In 2008, Kane County kicked off its “Making Kane County Fit for Kids” initiative, which has the goal of reversing childhood obesity in Kane County by 2020.

Since then, the county has provided more than $430,000 to community organizations to implement local changes

to increase healthy eating and increase active living.

Obesity is a disease best treated by preventing it from happening. The efforts done so far locally are encouraging – but they are just the start.

Communities must embrace the need to reverse this epidemic. The consequence of not doing so may best be summed up by this observation in a 2005 study in The New England Journal of Medicine: this generation of children could end up living shorter lives than their parents.

We want what’s best for our children. When it comes to their general health, we need to start showing it.

Hard work and dedication To the person waiting for a thank you. Most of the organizations for pet rescue are run by volunteers. Many of these volunteers have full-time jobs and are spending much of their off time taking care of foster animals, transporting, training, cleaning up and adopting out animals. The person donating items should volunteer to send thank you cards for the organization. It should be thanks enough to know that you are helping out these poor animals. Or better yet, send a thank you to the

organizations or a volunteer you know for all their hard work and dedication.

What bad taste I’m calling in response to the illustration in the Sept. 20 Chronicle that stated, “Navy yard slaughter notch up another for gun rights ...” What bad taste. I would like to know how this insane act could be of any advantage to gun rights.

Main Street tradition Let’s move the homecoming parades in St. Charles back to Main Street, so that the students and parents can enjoy the windows that were painted, and we can get back to creating school spirit for the homecoming weekend.

I’m calling in response to the Sound Off ad that said they were waiting for a thank you from the Anderson Animal Shelter after dropping off a donation. First of all, as a volunteer at the shelter, I can tell you that when you do drop something off, if you stop at the front desk, they will give you a receipt for your donation.

All donations are appreciated, as we have a tremendous amount of animals coming through our facility every year. But it also costs money to send thank yous and receipts in the mail, and money is very tight. So, for anyone who does drop off at Anderson, stop at the front desk and get a receipt for your donation.

Many Americans believe that it is solely protection from tyrants and despots. That is the fear that is being used by those who think it is acceptable, albeit unfortunate, that Americans are being gunned down. We must start to understand that the greater need for protection that Lock, Mill and our founding fathers wrote about, was protection from each other. The other fundamental misunderstanding is about freedom. Too many Americans believe we have freedom to, rather than freedom from.

Our social contract was created to give us freedom from hard, so that we could have life, liberty and pursue happiness. Does the misinterpreted freedom to bear arms trump our children’s freedom from the fear of being murdered?

JP Jewelers in STC celebrates 20 years

nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jim Petterec Sr. was 16 when he started working in the jewelry industry. Now, he’s celebrating 20 years in business at his own store, JP Jewelers in St. Charles.

“I’ve been doing this for 45 years,” he said. “As a 16-yearold, I thought it would be really cool to have my own store.

When the time was right, it found me.”

In the last 20 years, the shop has steadily made its way toward its current location at 151 S. First St., St. Charles. Petterec said he originally opened in Bloomingdale and then moved to Bartlett before ending up in St. Charles in 2009.

“It was a natural progression,” he said. “I always wanted to come here. ... The river is charming and enchanting, and there are all types of mom-and-pop shops serving the community. It’s fun.”

Petterec said when he first opened the store in Bloomingdale in 1993, he remembers filling jewelry cases with gem books just to take up space as he built up his inventory.

Petterec, a certified diamontologist and gemologist, said he has always been interested in gems, but it’s the personal relationships he built while working in the jewelry industry that inspired him to open his own business.

“I enjoy working with people. It’s a happy business,” he said.

To celebrate 20 years, Petterec is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. On Oct. 19, he said Pesto the Clown – the same clown that appeared at their original ribbon-cutting in Bloomingdale – will be doing balloon art and magic from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store. A hot dog cart will be available.

BIG START HOLDS UP Vikings pop early, cling to victory over North Stars

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva coach Rob Wicinski entered the season saying he had a talented but inexperienced team, forecasting the Vikings could have a strong season if some of their youngsters started to “pop.”

To St. Charles North, the sound of Geneva’s first-half ambush Friday must have sounded like a bag of microwave popcorn left in too long. The Vikings popped, punctured and pierced the North Stars early before holding on for dear life in a 35-28 Upstate Eight Conference River win at Burgess Field.

“I’d say we popped a little bit,” Wicinski said. “That was the game we’ve kind of been looking for.

“We’ve just been so inconsistent, and it kind of showed again in the second half. That ugly head popped up again, but first half, I’ll take it, and we’ll just build off of that.”

It was a scintillating opening half for Geneva junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and his receiving corps. Santacaterina threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns in the first half while running for the Vikings’ other score as Geneva led 35-14 by the break.

Two of those first half TDs went to senior Kyle Brown, including a circus, 23-yard TD catch late in the first quarter.

After Pace Temple took the snap on a fake extra point and ran in for a two-point conversion, it was 21-0 Vikings.

Brown overcame plenty of contact to make the crowd-pleasing grab.

“He was definitely on my hip the whole time,” Brown said of his defender. “I turned around and I was kind of expecting more of a jump ball but it was just a little lower. Somehow, I don’t know, I was able to snag it.”

Miller required medical attention in the aftermath of the hit but remained in for the duration.

“I was very surprised,” Douds said of Miller toughing it out. “I was a little hurt myself. I did something to my neck. But he’s a tough kid, and he came back in.”

Geneva led, 28-0, before North (2-3, 1-2 UEC River) finally answered on the first of two Evan Kurtz TD runs. Kurtz’s second TD run in the second

quarter came from 72 yards out on the first play of a North drive to help draw the North Stars within 35-14 before the break.

North’s defense regrouped dramatically in the second half to keep Geneva (3-2, 2-1 UEC River) from icing the game.

“We knew that the pass was killing us so we had to give our corners some protection,” North coach Rob Pomazak said of his team’s adjustments.

“So that’s what we did, and it looked like it paid off, it’s just 35 points in the first half is hard to come back from, no matter who you are.”

North’s first completion of the night was a 38-yard touch-

down pass from Miller to Jon Merriweather early in the third quarter as the visitors got within 35-21 after Kat Stutesman’s PAT. North’s momentum was temporarily disrupted when Kurtz fumbled on first-andgoal from Geneva’s 7 late in the third quarter, and the Vikings’ James Carroll recovered.

But the North Stars kept hope alive when, on fourthand-19 from the Geneva 21, Miller lofted a TD pass to tight end Garrett Johnson, and the extra point gave North 21 unanswered points while making it a one-score game with 4:30 to play.

Geneva went three-and-out on the ensuing drive but the North Stars weren’t able to move within striking distance in the final minutes.

Kurtz (23 carries, 196 rushing yards) was sidelined in the late stages with what Pomazak

called “a stinger.”

Wicinski drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for chirping at officials during North’s last scoring drive, but his mood did a 180 after the game, especially when informed that his daughter Lauren’s college volleyball team, Michigan State, upended No. 1 Penn State on Friday night.

“That is awesome!” Wicinski said. “That’s better than this game.”

Santacaterina finished 13 for 23 passing for 272 yards with four TD passes and two interceptions while also running for 32 yards, including a fourthdown conversion in the Vikings’ own territory in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

He hooked up with three receivers on the night – Brown (five catches, 111 yards, two TDs), Temple (six catches, 126 yards, TD) and Michael Landi (two catches, 35 yards, TD).

While the Hubs showed the overflow Peterson Field crowd a few variations on what they’re used to seeing, the Knights’ familiar bravado ultimately prevailed.

Facing the reality of a rare halftime deficit as time wound down on the second quarter, the Knights lined up for a second down play from their own 34 with seven seconds to play. Moments earlier, a holding call negated a go-ahead scoring pass from Drew David to Nauert, but even with a timeout remaining and booming kicker Matt Rodriguez practicing on the sideline, the Knights still eyed the end zone.

They got there as time expired on the half, with Pruett slipping behind the Rochelle secondary and snagging David’s arching pass down the right sideline.

“With the weapons that we have and with Drew, there’s always a chance, so we’re going to go for it,” Fedderly said.

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland quarterback Drew David romped into the Rochelle secondary when he wasn’t finding open receivers there.

Defensive lineman Justin Diddell crashed into Hubs ball-carriers with no sight of a hole.

The second half of the Knights’ 49-20 victory against Rochelle on Friday sure made the first half look misleading.

With its stranglehold on the Northern Illinois Big 12 East seemingly in peril in the conference opener, Kaneland responded with a second-half shutout while revving up its offense to boot.

“We actually woke up,” Diddell said. “We came out in the second half with our head on straight. We were just ready to hit somebody.”

Kaneland stretched its regular-season winning streak to 33 games, a run that includes four victories against Rochelle by an average of just under 27 points.

David connected with John Pruett for a go-ahead touchdown of 34 yards just before halftime.

In the fourth quarter, David found Pruett for a 37-yard score while rushing for a 57yard TD that accounted for the final margin with Matt Rodriguez’s point-after.

The Knights (5-0, 1-0 NI Big 12 East) led just 21-20 at halftime.

“I think we can throw it when we have to, and I think we can run it when we have to,” Knights coach Tom Fedderly said. “I try to keep it balanced and just take what the defense gives us.”

For Rochelle (4-1, 0-1), closing the gap hinged on a handful of factors, namely the offense’s ability to keep the Knights’ vaunted spread attack off the field.

Veteran Hubs coach Kevin Crandall, long a disciple of time-honored, Wing-T football, added a handful of other formations entering the season to maximize the talents of quarterback Angel Burciaga, running back Evan White and fullback Marquez Felix.

Montini hands Marmion first loss Broncos won last four 5A state titles

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – If the Marmion football team was going to defeat four-time defending IHSA Class 5A state champion Montini on Friday night at Fichtel Field, the Cadets were going to have to avoid costly turnovers.

They weren’t able to do that.

A pair of Marmion fumbles less than a minute apart late in the second quarter handed the Broncos 10 points, allowing them to take a 20-3 halftime lead en route to a 27-3 victory in a battle between two unbeaten teams.

Marmion coach Dan Thorpe obviously wasn’t pleased with the turnovers, but he was more concerned about his team’s inability to come back from adversity.

“We’ve got to be able to suck it up and respond to that,” he said. “The second half, yeah, I think we did defensively, but offensively we weren’t physical at all. We didn’t respond to their physicality.”

The Cadets actually outgained Montini, 144-134, in the first half, but came away with only three points.

“At first, no matter how deep we were in our own territory, we would push up until about our 45 to their 45yard line, and then we would j u s t s t a l l , ” Brock Krueger Marmion junior running back Jordan Glasgow said. “That’s on the whole team as an offense.”

Glasgow gained 74 yards on 16 carries, but blamed himself for not making the right reads on some running plays.

A 17-yard burst up the middle by Glasgow and a 13yard scamper by quarterback Brock Krueger set up Marmion’s only score, a 24-yard field goal by Riley DeMoss that tied the game late in the first quar-

The Cadets (4-1, 2-1 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) trailed just 10-3 and had driven from their own 14 to near midfield when Krueger was sacked and coughed up the football.

Edgar Ruano scooped up the loose ball and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.

On the second play of Marmion’s ensuing possession, Glasgow lost a fumble, which led to another field goal by Montini’s Mason WeissenJordanGlasgow hoffer.

“I feel that [my fumble], which was very late in the second quarter, that did flatten us,” said Glasgow, who has played through ankle woes in recent weeks. “It’s frankly unacceptable for that to happen.”

The Cadets were unable to find the end zone in the fourth quarter, even after Nick Ferraro gave them good field position by blocking a punt.

Batavia defenders were usually in the area when the Wildcats threw the ball, forcing West Chicago quarterback Jordan Lelito to throw two interceptions to Michael Moffatt.

Moffatt said the Batavia coaching staff has challenged the Bulldogs’ defense of late, pushing them to step up their effort.

Batavia responded, permitting only a late fourth-quarter touchdown when all of its starters were out of the game.

“Last week, I let up a deep ball, so coach talked to me

about it and that I needed to wake up in games like this that are less intense,” Moffatt said. “Before the game, coach talked to us and said our defense wasn’t playoff ready and that we needed to show that that wasn’t true.”

Batavia forced the running clock on its first offensive play of the second half as Blake Crowder went straight through the middle of the line, going untouched for an 83-yard touchdown that put Batavia up, 41-0.

With Coffey taking the entire second half off, backup quarterback Evan Acosta took advantage, finishing 3 for 4 passing for 38 yards while scoring a 1-yard touchdown run to account for Batavia’s final score that made it 48-0.

Like Coffey, Scaccia played only the first half but was dominant, carrying the ball eight times for 108 yards and a score.

STC East has no trouble with Elgin Mitchell throws for 258 yards, 5 TDs in win

After a tough loss at the hands of Neuqua Valley last week, the Saints (4-1, 2-0 UEC River) appeared to be back on track on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball against an outmatched and winless Elgin team.

The Saints’ offense was paced by quarterback Jimmy Mitchell, who repeatedly exploited the edge of the Elgin defense.

Mitchell methodically picked apart the secondary, going 10 for 17 passing with 258 yards and five touchdowns.

East coach Mike Fields was happy to bounce back with the win, but he still wants to see improvement out of his team before its conference matchup against Geneva next Friday.

“We challenge our guys every week to get better week to week,” Fields said.

“We’ll look at the film and see where we’re at. We’ve got to do it for four quarters.”

The Saints played without starting running back Erik Anderson, who was hurt in the game against Neuqua Valley.

“He’s doing OK, I think he’ll be back next week,” Fields said about Anderson. “This week off I think helped him.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia football team had a chance to get healthy Friday night.

The Bulldogs sat a number of injured starters and ran roughshod over West Chicago, stuffing the stat sheet in a 48-7 win.

Just as it did in a win against Streamwood last week, Batavia rested regulars and won easily, scoring on five of its six first-half possessions in the easy victory against the winless Wildcats.

First-quarter touchdown runs from Anthony Scaccia (49 yards), Micah Coffey (7) and offensive lineman-turned-fullback Mitchell Krusz (5) provided an early cushion as Batavia (4-1) limited West Chicago (0-5) to just 38 yards of total offense in the first half.

“The main thing is we wanted to come out fast and play great football in the first half,” Piron said.

“These kids had a great work of practice and were Anthony obviously the Scaccia superior football team. I’m really pleased with how Micah leads us, how explosive Scaccia is and how dominant our offensive line was.”

Coffey finished the first half strong, completing 12 of 19 passes for 173 yards, 36 coming on a touchdown pass to Jordan Zwart that gave the Bulldogs a 35-0 lead.

Aurora Christian finds a new ‘Legend’

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Legend Smith just gave opposing coaches something else to fear when they face Aurora Christian’s football team.

After waiting in the wings for the last four weeks, the Eagles senior running back did a lion’s share of the offensive work in a 24-14 win over St. Francis on Friday night.

“We kept him quiet for four weeks,” said Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe, whose team is known more for its aerial attack. “I’m just really proud of the way Leg-

end Smith ran the ball. He ran hard. He’s a great running back and he proved that tonight.”

It didn’t take long for Smith to make his presence felt. On the first play of the game, he rushed for 15 yards.

Seven plays later he broke off a 32-yard scoring run that put Aurora Christian (5-0 overall, 3-0 Suburban Christian Blue) ahead 7-0 just 3:23 into the game.

“When I was running through that hole, at first I didn’t expect it to be there but my line was just doing what they needed to do,” Smith said. “They worked together,

After a three-and-out for St. Francis (3-2, 1-2), the Eagles struck quickly on Brandon Walgren’s 63-yard option pass to Noah Roberts, making it 14-0 with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

Smith said the fast start gave the Eagles confidence

and momentum for the rest of the game. Beebe said a fast start was necessary on a night in which the Spartans had a dedication ceremony for their new Kuhn Memorial Stadium, and a night in which the Eagles faced their first real test of the season. Coming into the game, they had outscored their overmatched opponents, 233-21.

“We knew we were coming into a hornet’s nets,” Beebe said. “We knew they were going to come out with everything they had. They were going to play physical, they were going to play fast and I said, ‘Guys, this game isn’t going to be like the first four. We

have to start fast and take the momentum out of them right away.’ And boy, did we do that in spades.”

With Smith rushing for 188 yards, the Eagles piled up 402 yards of offense. St. Francis was limited to 181 total yards with standout running back James Butler limited to 44, including a 1-yard touchdown that made it a 14-7 game with 4:12 left in the first half.

“They had a great defense,” Butler said. “They had a great scheme that confused our linemen and our backs a little bit. I have to give it up to their defense. They played a really good game tonight.”

Chargers falls short Burlington Central blanked on road against St. Edward

By TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – After the St. Edward football team fumbled a punt late in the third quarter, Aurora Central Catholic put itself in great field position to make a comeback.

Chargers quarterback Matt Schaefer ran five yards for a touchdown as time expired in the third to cut the deficit to six. However, ACC didn’t score any more afterward, and the Chargers fell, 35-21, Friday in the Suburban Christian Conference crossover.

The Green Wave were led by Davontae Elam’s 178 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Chargers could never stop the St. Edward running game.

ACC’s top player was Schaefer, who finished the game with 75 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

The Chargers started the scoring in the first quarter with a four-play, 68-yard drive that was capped by a Schaefer 2-yard touchdown run. St. Edward immediately answered two and a half minutes later when Tighe Koehring broke for a 47-yard run and score.

Green Wave tied the score again at the end of the first quarter with an Elam touchdown run to make the score 14-14.

St. Edward scored the only points of the second quarter after a 74-yard drive that took 12 plays. Michael Castoro ran into the end zone from 24 yards out and the Green Wave led, 21-14, at halftime.

To start the second half, the Green Wave (3-2) took nearly seven minutes off the clock on a 12-play, 72-yard drive that ended when Joe Mullen found Nick Duffy for a 25-yard touchdown completion.

After the Chargers’ final score at the end of the third, St. Edward scored two more times to put the game away.

ACC coach Brian Casey brought in Kyle Reilly at quarterback down the stretch in the fourth quarter to make big throws downfield. Reilly completed five passes for 70 yards.

Julian Rios was another big contributor for the Chargers as he ran for 56 yards.

GENOA – Burlington Central squandered an opportunity to win a pivotal Big Northern Conference East football game Friday.

A win could’ve drawn the Rockets even with Genoa-Kingston in the conference standings, but they couldn’t match the energy of the home team in a 43-0 loss to the Cogs.

“Usually, we’d tell our kids that when we have that type of crowd, we need to raise to their level,” Rockets coach Rich Crabel said. “We didn’t raise to their level.”

The win was G-K’s first over Central (1-4, 1-2 BNC East) since 2010.

Lopez added 105 yards and three scores on the ground.

After an early score gave them momentum, the Cogs recovered a fumble, and McNeal hit senior Tyeler L’Huillier for a 20-yard touchdown strike on the very next play.

“We came out here jacked,” McNeal said. “When you give this team adrenaline like that, we ride with it.”

With the lead in hand, the Cogs went to their ground game, which wore down the Rockets.

G-K used eight different rushers on the night and

racked up 246 yards on the ground.

G-K kept pouring it on into the second half. Lopez and Beach each scored, and the defense continued to shut down Central. When time ran out, the party was just getting started for the Cogs, who were swarmed by their orange-clad student section.

While it’s still very early, this win leaves the Cogs optimistic about the rest of the season.

After a rocky start, they now have won three straight games, and this confidence-building win could be a springboard to many more.

“Confidence is sky high,” McNeal said. “This is the first time we’ve had a winning record since 2010. Everybody’s really pumped up about that, and I think this win is going to give us a good shot of making the playoffs this year.”

Preseason morale was high around the team. How has that held up into late September?

I ran cross country a few years and a couple pounds ago, and coaches always talked about muscle memory when we returned to courses. Do you buy that theory?

I would say so. When we ran at Detweiller [Park in Peoria earlier this month], it was my second time running it, but a course like LeRoy Oakes, we go there so much that you do feel like the mus-

cle memory is there. … You get to know the turns, the type of course it is.

Me and Chris, we were in a couple classes together in middle school and both actually started cross country our eighth-grade year and ended up being our No. 1 and 2 guys in middle school. Then we went into high school and pretty much have the same varsity history. … We have been 1-2 throughout this season. We’ve had our meets where I’ve beaten him, he’s beaten me. We have our own friendly competition, really.

And that plays to runners’ favor, right, since Detweiller hosts the state meet?

What makes ‘Coach D’ [Batavia coach Mike DiDomenico] so effective?

It’s an easy course to get used to and I feel I’ve definitely gotten used to it. I’ve heard from just about everybody that a lot of people like it because it’s fast and very flat, not a lot of hills.

He is a great coach and he’s actually put together a great practice schedule. I think this season’s practice schedule is probably one of the best he’s put together because it’s a wide variety of workouts. …

He’s very knowledgeable and he’s always making sure we’re safe out there. He never wants us crossing over major roads out there and makes sure we get back all right.

What are some of the team’s workout run routes?

On normal runs, we’ll just run around Batavia. Sometimes we’ll go to Geneva, or even parts of St. Charles. ...

Across the street from the school, there’s a nice park [Engstrom Park] where we’ll go for intervals. It’s a nice big field to do workouts around.

Does it feel pretty different when you’re out and about driving the same streets you usually run?

I would say so. I guess I don’t really think about it that much, but then it’s weird to think about running that long distance. It’s so much shorter when you’re driving.

A video of Thursday’s soccer collision between Marmion’s Flynn Collins and St. Charles East’s Mike Novotny was posted to YouTube, giving Novotny a persistent case of online rubber-necking.

The Saints senior goalkeeper’s physical ailments from the collision figure to linger long after his curiosity is quenched.

“I watched the video so many times, and I don’t even know what happened,” Novotny said. “I still can’t even see what happened … what part of him hit my shin, what part of him hit my ankle, but it looks like my knee hit his head. I keep looking back at it because it’s just one of those tackles where you can hear it in the video. It was crazy.”

Novotny learned at a doctor’s appointment Friday that he has a partial ligament tear in his left ankle to go with a deep bone bruise on his left shin. He is expected to miss at least two weeks, beginning with today’s championship match of the St. Charles East Tournament against Streamwood.

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab Novotny said he’s “pretty down” about his outlook, but he realizes it’s much worse for Collins. As the Kane County Chronicle reported Friday, Collins – arguably Marmion’s top player – will miss the rest of his senior season after suffering a broken jaw in two places. Novotny said he dug up a phone number for Collins, of Batavia, and text messaged his well-wishes Thursday night.

The collision unfolded after a pass from one of the Saints’ defenders back to Novotny rolled slowly enough that the speedy Collins was tempted to make a play on the ball. He darted in to try to beat Novotny to it midway through the second half of East’s eventual 4-1 win.

“I think it was just a 50-50 tackle,” Novotny said. “It’s a part of the game. You’ve got to go in hard, and if you don’t go in hard, you’re going to end

up really bad. We both went in hard and were just trying to win the ball. There’s really nothing else we can do; it was really unlucky on both of our parts.”

An Eastern Illinois recruit, Novotny will be a substantial loss for the unbeaten Saints, though East is much better situated to deal with it than most teams would. Another quality keeper, Chris Lucatorto, has shared time with Novotny each of the past two seasons.

Novotny hopes to be back in time for the postseason, which begins Oct. 22.

His more immediate worry is tonight’s homecoming dance. Novotny, newly on crutches and wearing a protective boot, has a date, and he doesn’t want to miss out.

“I have no idea what I’m going to do,” Novotny said.

“It’s going to be interesting. I have to think about it [Friday night].”

I still think we’re feeling good. We’re still trying to figure out who our top seven

are going to be by the time we make it to regionals and sectionals and hopefully make it down to state. We’re feeling pretty good about this season. ... We definitely have a lot of experience and last year we had a disappointment when it came to sectionals. When this year came, we were ready. We know we’ll have some good competition, and we hope we’ll be ready to get through it all.

Batavia senior boys cross country runner Mitch Zabka wants to compete after high school, but that doesn’t mean he’s rushing to get past this season. Veteran Bulldogs coach Mike DiDomenico has touted the team’s potential and depth from the beginning of workouts, and Zabka always sensed the same.

Speaking with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chitchat, Zabka addressed the season so far and explored his history with longtime running-mate, Chris Orlow.

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Sean Evans was on the Ross-Ade Stadium sidelines in 2009, witnessing firsthand one of the gutsiest calls anyone in attendance will ever see.

Evans, then a true freshman cornerback who would end up taking a redshirt year, watched as former coach Jerry Kill called a fake punt from NIU’s own 16-yard line.

It paid off, as running back Justin Anderson took a direct snap and ran 11 yards for a first down. The call helped the Huskies run out the clock and hang on for a 28-21 win over Purdue.

“We had belief. That’s one thing that we pride ourselves on. We believe in the system, we believe in the journey and never do we flinch. That was a prime example then,” Evans said. “Nobody in the stadium knew what was going on, but we did. We had faith and when it worked, that just added to the spark. That just kept us going and really got things rolling.

That was probably one of the most exciting moments of my career here.”

Evans was one of four current Huskies to travel to West Lafayette four years ago, with the others being quarterback Jordan Lynch, offensive tackle Matt Krempel and defensive tackle Anthony Wells.

It was the first “boneyard victory” for the group. The team puts a large dog bone up in the locker room after each win over a BCS school.

NIU would add wins over

BCS schools in 2010 (Minnesota) and 2012 (Kansas). This season started with another one of those boneyard victories, with the Huskies getting a win at Iowa Week 1. NIU is looking to become the first Mid-American Conference team to beat two Big Ten teams in the same regular season. Bowling Green defeated Purdue in the 2003 regular season before defeating Northwestern in the Motor City Bowl.

The Boilermakers have struggled so far this year, particularly on offense. Purdue averages only 15.2 points per game and 246 yards a contest.

The Boilermakers offensive coordinator John Shoop was the Bears’ much-maligned coordinator from 2001 to 03.

Purdue has been in every one of its games at halftime, and NIU coach Rod Carey thinks the Boilermakers are better than their 1-3 record shows.

Purdue has played two Top 25 teams, and only lost to No. 22 Notre Dame by seven points.

The CASA Kane County Fox Valley Kids Marathon, held Sept. 21 in downtown St. Charles, saw 500 registered children. The race was open to children ages 5 to 13. Instead of running all 26.2 miles at once, the kids were given 16 weeks over the summer to run or walk 25 miles, one mile at a time. On Saturday, they completed the final 1.2 miles and claimed their marathon medal. “The health and heart of children is everything we focus our efforts on at CASA Kane County,” said Gloria Bunce, Executive Director at CASA Kane County.

Kale, a fall favorite While fall is truly my favorite season, it is always sad to see summer come to an end.

The beginning of fall means enjoying the last tomatoes from the vine and relishing the harvest of fall veggies like Swiss chard, beets, squash and kale. It is the time we all begin “nesting” for the winter and looking for our favorite comfort food recipes, like soup.

Last weekend, I harvested a bunch of veggies from the garden and made a delicious soup. I started off by sautéing onions and garlic; then added a couple of spicy Italian sausages with the casings removed. When the sausage was cooked, I added a quart of chicken broth, 4 tomatoes diced, 1/2 of a red pepper, and 3 potatoes. When the potatoes were nearly cooked, I sliced a golden zucchini that had gotten a bit oversized – just a bit, not huge.

I just removed the seeds from the center and diced the rest – the yellow skin added more color to

Kale is a super food. It is very high in Vitamin K, A, and C. Like most of its fellow cruciferous vegetables, kale has been studied more extensively in relationship to cancer than any other health condition. This research focus makes perfect sense. Kale’s nutrient richness stands out in three particular areas: antioxidant nutrients, anti-inflammatory nutrients, and anti-cancer nutrients.

Some people find kale to taste a bit bitter.

In that case, soup or in smoothies is a great place to disguise kale but still receive all of the nutritional benefits. Another way to enjoy kale is in a popular

I’ve been coveting a smoothie maker and this is one of the ways that to justify the expense – by taking some of my favorite veggies and fruits that are in my freezer and whipping them up into a delicious drink over the winter.

A final thought, if your garden is producing more than you can use, be sure and think of your local food pantries. Most are willing to accept fresh veggies and the patrons are appreciative.

Life is good for a few minutes between moments TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose It’s all about the candy, for the kids. Even the big ones.

My neighbor, she wanted the box of Dots that was tossed to the ground at her daughter’s feet.

The dads, not to be outdone, wanted candy, too, so Holly and her buddy shared their homecoming parade loot.

But this year, the parade was about more than the candy, for me.

This time, Noah got to ride on a float alongside his Batavia High School soccer teammates.

Last year he missed his first shot at riding on a float, as his freshman team had a game, but this year he was ready. I’m not sure who looked forward to it more, him or me.

Usually, he’s one of the kids scrambling for goodies as they fall. But this time, he was one of the ones tossing them.

He and his teammates tossed candy and miniature soccer balls to the kids who lined the parade route.

My heart swelled even more as I gazed west up Wilson Street, as the sun peeked through the still-leafy trees.

Spirits were high; the air was mild; and, while it’s been a challenging several weeks for one reason or another (aren’t they always?), for these few simple minutes, life was

More Content Now When Lorrie Thomson began writing her debut novel “Equilibrium,” she never imagined how drastically her perspective would change before the story’s conclusion.

“Equilibrium” is about a family coping with the aftermath of a husband/ father’s struggle with bipolar disorder, and the ultimate tragedy brought on by suicide. It is the story of the impact mental illness can have on a family, both in life and death. Though poignant, “Equilibrium” avoids the trap of maudlin, telling the story through the eyes of a mother and daughter who have come to accept that life must be lived, only to see a new challenge surface that threatens their fragile stability. And it is that new challenge, the inherited bipolar trait in the son and brother, that rekindles all the fears and doubts and threatens to destroy what the family has rebuilt.

Thomson devoted hour upon hour to researching her topic. But the full impact of what she was writing hit Lorrie’s heart when her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Though “Equilibrium” remained a fiction novel, the complex family dynamics became truth.

“Equilibrium” is filled with drama. There is romance, love, dashed dreams, fear and a boatload of emotion and conflict. But, always, there is hope.

As stated, the story is told through the mother and daughter’s viewpoints.

I liked that we could see how each handled the circumstances affecting their lives, and no matter how different they thought each other to be, in the end, their commonality far outweighed their perceived differences.

Though technically a literary work, I would recommend “Equilibrium” to romance and young adult readers as well. There is definite attraction between major characters, and those relationships bring their own issues to an already struggling family.

A former Bostonian, author Lorrie now resides in New Hampshire with her husband and children where she

from the local high school has been overwhelming. I’m excited about the enthusiasm from both adult and high school book clubs. I can’t wait to sit down and discuss their reactions to the story. After hanging out alone with my characters, I’m looking forward to hearing the thoughts of many, many book clubs.

DK: A follow-up question: What kind of pressure do those reviews put on you for your next book due out in 2014?

LT: Comparison is inevitable. That said, just like a parent with more than one child, I feel every novel I write is special in its own way. I hope the reviewers feel that way, too!

DA Kentner: How did your son’s diagnosis impact “Equilibrium”?

Lorrie Thomson: I completed the first draft of “Equilibrium” before my son showed any symptoms of his disorder.

After having experienced real-life trauma, and re-reading that draft, I was surprised by how accurately I’d portrayed the family’s reactions. In subsequent drafts, I’ve peppered in some from-real-life emotional responses. And the scene in which Laura and Troy visit the father’s/husband’s grave? That was written fairly recently, and helped me unravel a question I’ve been asking myself for years. How can you tell the difference between a loved one’s personality and his mental illness?

DK: I find it interesting that a number of prerelease reviewers have recommended your book as a “must read” for discussion groups and book clubs. You pounded the “I want to be published’ roads for 10 years before finding a literary agent who believed in your work. So, how does it feel seeing

DK: Undoubtedly, some readers will be people who have suffered through the circumstances your characters struggle with.

What comfort do you believe your book can provide them?

LT: I believe there’s comfort in following the story of others who’ve weathered trauma, persevered, and ultimately thrived. There’s comfort in knowing we’re not alone. We all deserve real-life happy endings, even if those happy endings are different from what we imagined at the beginning of our journeys.

DK: Your next book also deals with life after a loss. What is it about that subject that compels you to write?

LT: When searching for a story spark, I look to my own fears. And then, through my characters, figure out how to stand up to them. So many people have lost loved ones, and I admire their resilience. Even though “Equilibrium” and “What’s Left Behind” deal with loss, the story perspectives are very different.

BTW, the 2015 book will deal with a different type of fear.

DK: Any parting thoughts for potential readers?

LT: I hope readers come away from “Equilibrium” with the feeling of having connected with the Klein family, the warm fuzzy feeling of, yes, I’ve felt that, too. I’ve been heard and validated.

Blood pressure reading at ankle can explain leg pain Dear Doctor K: I had some pain in my leg while exercising, and now my doctor wants to do an ankle-brachial index test. How is it done? And what will it tell him?

Dear Reader: Atherosclerosis stiffens and clogs our arteries. It attacks the coronary arteries that provide blood to the heart muscle and causes heart attacks. It also attacks the arteries of the brain, causing strokes.

Atherosclerosis also often affects the peripheral arteries of the legs. When we exercise our leg muscles, they can reach the point where we’re asking them to work harder than their blood supply allows. When that happens, they scream in pain.

The leg pain caused by atherosclerosis is usually felt in the calf, though sometimes it is felt in the thigh. Typically, the pain starts only after a person has been exercising his or her legs for a while. That’s when the muscles suddenly are being asked to work harder than they can, because of their reduced blood supply.

When a person stops exercising, pain caused by atherosclerosis typically goes away over the next minute or two.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Of course, many different conditions can cause leg pain when we exercise. In particular, injuries to leg muscles or to the hip, knee, ankle or foot can cause exercise pain. Just from your symptoms alone, it can be hard to be sure what is causing leg pain when you exercise.

A key test for problems in peripheral arteries is the ankle-brachial index, or ABI. An ABI compares blood pressure readings from the ankle and the brachial artery, which is the major blood vessel in the upper arm. The test is done using a blood pressure cuff and an ultrasound probe.

Normally, blood pressure is similar whether it is measured in the legs or in the arms. If blood pressure is lower in the legs, it usually means that fatty buildup inside the leg arteries is interfering with circulation.

The doctor will calculate your ABI by taking the highest pressure recorded at your ankle

and dividing it by the highest pressure recorded at your arm.

The normal range is between 0.90 and 1.30. A result under 0.90 means that blood is having a hard time getting to the legs and feet.

The lower the number, the higher the chances of leg pain while exercising or of limb-threatening low blood flow.

On the other end, an ABI above 1.30 is usually a sign of stiff, calcium-encrusted arteries. These often occur in people with diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

The ABI also offers information about your general cardiovascular health. An ABI result under 0.90, for example, also indicates an increased risk of heart attack, stroke or dying of heart disease. That’s because people with severe atherosclerosis of the arteries of the leg usually also have atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart and brain. I hope your test goes well and that the result is reassuring.

Dr. Wallace: I have a very disturbing problem regarding our 19-yearold daughter. Crystal has been suffering from severe depression for nearly nine months. Her boyfriend and his friend had been drinking, and he was speeding when the car he was driving missed a curve and smashed into a tree. Her boyfriend was killed instantly, and his friend died in the hospital a few days later. Neither boy was wearing a seatbelt.

Our daughter has been unable to function normally ever since the accident. She has received psychiatric therapy, but it hasn’t helped her. Crystal is a very bright girl, and she was attending a community college at the time of the accident. She became extremely emotional after she got this shocking news and quit attending classes.

My husband and I are very concerned about her failure to cope with her life. There are times when she tells us that she is finding it very difficult to go on living. We are doing everything we can to help her return to the happy young woman she once was.

I remember that, some time ago, you printed a letter from a young girl who wrote about her failed “suicide” after she jumped off a bridge. It was a very touching letter and I wonder if you could please print it again because I would like for Crystal to read it. – Mother, Sacramento, Calif.

My depression led me to an 80-foot-high bridge near San Francisco, and my loneliness told me to jump. Once I was airborne, I realized I didn’t want to die. Fortunately, God allowed me to live.

The jump broke all the bones in my ankles and crushed both heels.

My hip was broken in three places, and I also broke my back. My hospital stay lasted over three months. All of this happened because I thought, “What difference does it make? Nobody cares about me.”

I am once again walking but with a noticeable limp. I can’t stand too long, and I can’t bend my back at all. Besides many scars over my feet and legs, my rib cage is lower, and I’m one and a half inches shorter now than I was before I took the plunge.

I learned the hard way that people really did love me. My body will never be the same, but my spirit is at an all-time high. My mind is at ease and my future is bright.

In the last two days, we have looked at deals in which a lot of errors were made. Let’s end the week with one where the bidding was sane and the defense excellent.

After three passes, North opened because her hand satisfied the Rule of 15. If high-card points plus spade length equal at least 15, open; otherwise, pass out the deal.

South, who would have responded two hearts anyway, was even happier here because he was a passed hand; North wasn’t going to assume that his partner had a lot of points.

West contested with two spades (a makable contract), and North competed to three hearts with four-card support, despite her minimum count and flat hand. South passed, knowing that if game was good, North would have bid it.

West led the diamond ace.

Then she did very well, shifting to the spade 10, denying the jack. That made it easy for East to win with his king and return the diamond jack. West won with her king and led another diamond, which declarer ruffed.

South drew two rounds of trumps ending on the board and called for the spade nine.

East went in with his ace, but what did he do next?

Some players would have shifted fatally to a club. But East worked out declarer’s distribution. South was known to have started with two spades, five hearts, two diamonds and, therefore, four clubs. East could not gain by leading a club, so he returned a spade and waited for his club queen to defeat the contract.
