or me, homecoming season began last Friday, with the St. Charles North High School parade through downtown St. Charles. It was nice

of the North Stars to throw a parade for my birthday.

All of the pomp and circumstance of the parade was present with the band kicking it off

as it headed east down Illinois Street, with almost everyone marching and lining the streets wearing their best blue, black and white.

Toward the end of the parade, I looked up to find a large group of students getting a bird’s-eye view.

Sugar Grove man charged in Aurora shooting

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com A Sugar Grove man has been charged after police received to a call of shots fired Tuesday night at a home in Aurora.

Gabriel M. Carpenter, 27, of the 0-100 block of Heaton Court, Sugar Grove, was charged with one felony count of not having a Firearm Owner Identification card.

At 10:54 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a home in the 400 block of Blackhawk Street in Aurora to a report of shots fired, Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

He said the incident stemmed from an apparent

fight at the home. No one was injured in the shooting.

“At some point during the fight, Carpenter apparently produced a handgun, which discharged during the scuffle,” Ferrelli said.

Police recovered a gun from a neighboring yard,

and a gun magazine and holster also were found in Carpenter’s vehicle. Police also found a spent shell casing in the street.

Both Carpenter and a 26-year-old Oklahoma woman suffered injuries in the fight, but refused medical attention.

‘IT’S WHY THEY TRUST ME’ Italian immigrant auto body shop owner specializes in repair of expensive cars

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – When Pasquale Roppo starts his day, he never knows what will drive through the doors of his shop – or, as is more likely the case, what will get towed into his service bays.

But while Roppo, owner of the Geneva Body Shop and Geneva Repair Shop, will perform work on any kind of car, he still loves when he can turn his attention to something with a few more horses under the hood than your typical suburban commuter ride.

“Will I test drive them? Of course,” said Roppo, a sly grin creasing his face. “It’s one of the best parts of the job.

“And I have customers who trust me, and want me to test drive it.”

Since 2010, Roppo has owned and operated the auto body shop on North Raddant Road, just north of Wilson Street, in Batavia.

Earlier this year, he expanded the business, opening the auto repair business to go with it.

But Roppo’s roots in auto repair go far deeper than the front office.

From his youth, Roppo has done little other than repair cars.

But not just any cars. Growing up in Bari, Italy, Roppo cut his teeth on some of the finest automobiles in the world, learning the intricacies and details that separate cars from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and other European makes from others.

However, when Roppo immigrated to the U.S. in 2003, he found himself having to work his way up from the bottom.

Eventually, Roppo said he got his chance to begin working on the cars, as well as the floors.

“I was able to grab a spray gun, and show what I can do,” he said.

And throughout the years, he worked his way through the ranks, eventually using his savings and his savvy to purchase the Geneva Body Shop in 2010.

“I started with me and a painter,” Roppo said.

In the years since, Roppo has grown the business, add-

ing more employees and opening an automotive repair business in his building.

But the growth has been fueled in no small part by the ability of Roppo and his team to resurrect and restore high-performance automobiles that cost a lot of money.

Walking through the garage of his shop, Roppo points to several cars, telling the stories that explain how the rather expensive cars came to be in his shop.

overhead on a hydraulic lift, awaiting work.

As Roppo tells it, one day, he got a call from someone representing a New York TV personality, who said the luxury vehicle had been involved in a crash in Illinois. After some bad experiences at other body shops in the Chicago area, the owner eventually heard of Roppo’s shop.

“He called me, said he had done some research, and said, ‘We want you to be the guy to

save this car,’ ” Roppo said. “It meant a lot.”

Elsewhere in the garage, he points to a Lamborghini under a dropcloth – or what was left of the car.

He said the car had been raced, and crashed, destroying the back end. To restore the car, Roppo had to special order parts from Italy. Most had arrived, but he still was waiting on others.

Other cars in the shop included a Ferrari, as well as an assortment of classic American muscle cars being restored.

In all, Roppo estimated about 20 percent to 25 percent of his business comes from owners of these “exotic” automobiles, whose owners come from the Tri-Cities, as well as elsewhere in the Chicago area.

“It’s a regular, constant flow,” he said.

But another large and growing portion of his business comes from customizations, particularly custom paint.

He boasted that some automakers “hate” him because he has the ability to “match any color,” even those for which the automaker will not provide a paint code.

“We can put anything, any color, any tint, on any car, and make it look like it was born that way,” he said.

Board mulls options for library’s future

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Following the Geneva Library Board’s decision last weekend not to proceed with the purchase of the Cetron property, 7 Richards St., for the site of a new library, the board Thursday pondered what to do about the library’s future.

Board president Esther Steel said she asked Library Director Matt Teske to put a presentation together on services the library should or could be doing, but are not because of space issues.

“We had a good discussion among department heads and started working,” Teske said. “Some things might be limited by the building. We are in the process now of coming up with ideas and will have a presentation for you at the October board meeting.”

fler said he would like to see what the basics are of providing library services – room for books, room for staff and circulation.

“What do we really need in a library once we have that and prioritize it,” Shiffler said. “Is there a way to make this building work?”

But trustee Susan Shivers said she wanted to know what Teske’s vision was for the library and ideas of what he could do with a new building.

“When I was on school board, it wasn’t, ‘Gee we need a new school building.’

The superintendent gave us 500 reasons why we needed a new school and 500 things he could do with a new building,” Shivers said. “Ultimately, a library architect might want to take a look after we get the director’s vision. He is the director. He is supposed to direct. It’s up to him.”

Trustee Patricia Lord said she favored getting a library services survey back in play.

“We’ve been holding off on surveys. Let’s get the darn survey done,” Lord said. “Our customers need to weigh in … It is about what our patrons want.”

Steel said she could see forums to get library patrons’ views of what they want to see in services. But Shivers countered that the board did not need a wish list, but a vision.

“Susan is absolutely right,” Steel said.

In the past, surveyed patrons said their top complaint was no parking.

“I know a college student who won’t come here to study because it’s too noisy and no parking,” Steel said.

“There is nowhere to sit quietly to study. She is a Geneva resident and a Geneva grad and the number one reason

she does not come here is it’s too much [of a] pain in the butt to find parking.”

Resident Margaret Johnston, who also is a retired library employee, said parking is essential.

“Any other library you go to, they have parking,” Johnston told the board.

Shiffler suggested that one way to ensure the library stays downtown would be to tear it down and build a new one.

“A new building versus the current place – maybe there are things we can do in this place … or tear the building down and start over,” Shiffler said. “This would satisfy some people who like the location, but disfavored by those who like the building.”

The board also met in closed session to review other properties that might be suitable for a new library location.

“We drove this thing to its owner, and you should have seen the people staring,” Roppo said.

Roppo said he has built his business to appeal to such big-ticket car owners specifically because he said he brings the skills and equipment needed to fix any car.

“A flaw or blemish that might not even raise an eyebrow from a typical car owner, will make the owner of one of these babies go crazy,” Roppo said. “I know that; I respect that.

“It’s why they trust me.”

New director welcomed at park district reception

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Members of the St. Charles Park District on Thursday said they couldn’t be happier that Holly Cabel is the organization’s new director.

“She’s passionate about all the aspects of the park district and how it contributes to the quality of life of the community,” marketing manager Erika Young said.

“We’re lucky to have her as a leader.”

She replaced Ray Ochromowicz, who retired from the district Aug. 31.

The park district held a welcome reception for Cabel on Thursday afternoon at the Baker Community Center in downtown St. Charles.

We’re lucky to have her as a leader.”

Erika Young Marketing manager Cabel – who has worked at the park district full-time for 17 years and served as the superintendent of recreation for the last eight – said her first weeks as director have been busy.

“Days go zooming by,” she said, greeting someone with a hug. “It’s been great.”

Linda Jones – instructor of the upcoming early childhood program “It’s All About Purple, Girls!” – has known Cabel for about two decades, she said, noting Cabel was her

direct supervisor for many years.

“I’m doing backflips,” Jones said, describing Cabel as competent, pleasant, kind and efficient. “I couldn’t be happier.”

Although Community Center supervisor Lara Piner is relatively new to the park district, she said she felt comfortable asking Cabel questions.

“She’s very approachable,” she said.

Candy Boulay, Cabel’s administrative assistant, and Recreation Supervisor Krista Mulready echoed the excitement others had about Cabel’s promotion.

“She does a very good job of motivating us by leading by example,” said Mulready, calling her new position “well deserved.”

Cabel and her husband have three sons, ages 12, 9 and 2.

They live in St. Charles and visit several parks on a weekly basis, she said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office issued a binding opinion that Geneva School District 304 violated the requirements of the Open Meetings Act when the school board took final action on a matter without sufficiently informing the public of the nature of the action.

The Public Access counselor issued the opinion Tuesday.

It stems from a June 24 meeting in which an employee identified only as “Employee A” was recommended for termination after a 90-minute closed session.

The attorney general agreed with the complaint filed by the Kane County Chronicle, asserting the dis-

trict must name the person whose employment is recommended for termination in a public meeting.

The district withheld the employee’s name in favor of her privacy rights, officials said.

“We felt that the privacy interest of individual employee outweighed the public’s right to know in this instance,” school district attorney Rick Petesch said.

“But the attorney general disagreed. It’s simple as that.”

The attorney general directed the board to take “immediate and appropriate action to comply with the opinion by reconsidering its June 24 final action” with a recital of the action being taken, including naming the employee to be recommended for termination.

The Chronicle had challenged the district’s explanation in its complaint to the attorney general, stating the district did not have the right to withhold names of public employees recommended for termination when taking action at a public meeting.

The attorney general’s analysis agreed, stating, “Because the employee whose t e r m i n a t i o n w a s r e c o mmended was identified only as ‘Employee A’ the public was deprived of any meaningful information concerning the practical effect of the board’s decision.”

fice also found that although the public would know the general nature of the issue being voted on, “the public could not determine whether the board was dismissing a support staff, a teacher, a principal or the superintendent of the district.

“By declining to identify the subject of the dismissal by name, the board did not fully comply with the requirements of … the Open Meetings Act that it ‘inform the public of the business being conducted,’ ” according to the binding opinion.

While the attorney general’s decision found the district’s reason to conceal the employee’s identity “ ‘to save embarrassment,’ the legislature has clearly opted for the overriding policy of accountability. It is not our prerogative, or the board’s, to reject the importance of that public interest, or to exempt school boards from the express application of the act.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A 21-year-old Carpentersville man accused of making false bomb threats against Kane County court facilities was being held Thursday on $100,000 bail, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Akiel W. Davis, of the 100 block of Adobe Circle, has been charged with three counts of disorderly conduct.

Two counts are Class 3 felonies, and one count is a Class 4 felony.

According to the charging documents and law enforcement authorities, he reportedly called 911 the morning of Sept. 4 and falsely stated that four bombs were concealed

at the Kane County Judicial Center.

He also reportedly called the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office and stated many people in Kane County would die.

The threats prompted the evacuation of the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township, Kane Akiel W. County Branch Davis Court in St. Charles and Elgin Branch Court in Elgin.

According to court records, Davis was expected in court Sept. 4 for a status hearing on a burglary charge. Records indicate he failed to appear.

Family plans fundraiser for Misericordia home

nweskerna@shawmedia.com A longtime Geneva family is helping to host a fundraiser for the Misericordia Heart of Mercy home in Chicago, where former Geneva resident Andrew Althoff, 30, has lived for the past four years.

Althoff’s sister, Amy Drake, said many residents’ families host fundraisers for Misericordia – a residential community for people with mild to profound developmental disabilities. Drake said Misericordia is a nonprofit organization that’s run mainly by volunteers. Residents who are able also help in various jobs, such as recycling, and working at the campus bakery and greenhouse.

“Misericordia is kind of unlike most places,” Drake said. “They just have everything there. They have a restaurant on their campus.

It’s staffed by volunteers and also staffed by people who are high-functioning enough to work there.”

The fundraiser, Mis at the Zoo, is a family-friendly event at Brookfield Zoo scheduled for Oct. 6. Admission, which is $50 a adult and $25 a child, includes passes to special exhibits, such as a dolphin show and “Dinosaurs Alive!”

The day will include a raffle, the “Hungry as a Bear Picnic Lunch,” a DJ and cash bar, games and activities for all ages, entrance to the zoo and parking. Raffle prizes include Notre Dame tickets, Chicago Bears tickets and American Girl packages. The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and tickets can be bought at www.misatthezoo.com.

Drake said her parents have lived in Geneva for about 25 years, and Althoff attended Geneva schools. She said he often could be seen riding his bike and had many friends in the Geneva Police Department.

She said in his time at Misericordia, Althoff has thrived and has worked several jobs on campus.

“Drew has really liked it there,” she said. “I think he’s really comfortable there.”

BATAVIA – Those who participate in Sunday’s Batavia MainStreet House Walk will see an eclectic mix of homes.

The seventh annual walk will benefit the Batavia MainStreet organization and its efforts to revitalize downtown Batavia.

The walk raises between $8,000 and $10,000 a year for the nonprofit organization, said Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet.

This year’s theme is “Making a House Your Home.” The walk will include a variety of homes, including a rebuilt home on Elm Street.

“It is a new rebuild, but they wanted it to look like the homes around them,” Cuartero said.

New this year, the walk also will feature a tour of Simonetti Studios at 30 Shumway Ave. in downtown Batavia, which is in the historical Old City Hall building.

“We wanted to try and highlight some of the historic buildings in Batavia,” Cuartero said.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Caring about the future To the Editor: I am 87 years old and proud of it. As proud as I am of my age, I am even prouder of the shape I’m in. I still go to a fitness center every day and work out.

While there, I also actively participate in political discussions with a group of friends about the many issues that confront our country today. You see, I’m mentally – as well as physically – fit.

So, what is the reason for what might appear as nothing more than an old man bragging about himself? Simple! I care about the future of my country.

I look about me and see an epidemic of obesity.

I look about me and see a country drowning in political apathy.

I look about me and see mindless video games substituted for intellectual pursuits.

Can any nation endure under such conditions?

Please listen to your elders. Reject the easy way.

Embrace the difficult. Maybe some day you too can make the proud boast – I’m 87!

Local artists igniting Art on Fire program in Geneva Next time your dog wants to salute a Geneva fire hydrant with a hind leg, the mutt might reconsider.

After all, it doesn’t want to be arrested for defacing public art.

Batavia grows windmills like overgrown cornstalks; St. Charles positions red foxes over the Fox River like sentries. Soon Geneva will have fire hydrants.

Or, rather, thanks to Art on Fire, fire hydrants so cool you’ll buy a dog just so you have an excuse to gaze at them.

Lately, you might have passed someone kneeling by a hydrant, cleaning it with a steel brush or spray painting it white, blue or fuchsia, their background color before starting their modern day Sistine Chapel – or Viking.

Who’s responsible for

these artistic renditions? For me, a writer who loves wordplay, the answer couldn’t be better: Burns. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns.

“I had the idea for a while,” Burns told me. “Like most good ideas, it’s not really mine, but a variation of similar programs held in other communities. What’s the saying ... ‘Imitation is the greatest form of flattery?’ Owing to some persistence and research on my part, the idea took off – dare I say, I created a spark?”

Yes, the mayor ignited the imaginations of the 52 artists currently transforming boring, red eyesores that only a full-bladdered dog could love into local Mona Lisas. Limited only by the contest’s encouragement that the design suggest a nearby building or event, or reflect

Why do I, whose stick figures resemble bricks, know about this? In August, my son, Jay, and my wife, Tia, picked up applications, colored-penciled a fire hydrant outline and submitted their drawings.

After the city accepted their designs, they took their acceptance letters to Geneva’s Ace Hardware, picked up their pints of paint, donned old clothes and set out to put art on fire.

Tia’s hydrant, on Third Street, sandwiched between The Paper Merchant and The Little Traveler, sports a mother owl and owlets, reminiscent of the great horned owls occasionally whoo-whooing in a nearby nest.

“The hydrant’s not exactly the same shape as the application’s outline,” said Tia, brushing clean the old, chipping, red paint one hot Sunday afternoon. “I’ll have to work on my drawing before I begin painting.”

Maybe that’s what art and writing have in common: the process is not so much inspired spontaneity – although that helps – but close attention to revision and detail.

Now nearly finished painting the hydrant, Tia tells me, “People stop all the time to talk. They say what a great

idea this is, and that’s why they come to Geneva. There’s always something going on.”

And guess what! These metal canvases will be available for “adoption;” so step it up, dog owners. One or more hydrants can be your pet’s brother or sister, onto which they can release their frustration.

Sure beats a pointed cuspids choke hold.

SUGAR GROVE – The death of a 25-year-old Sugar Grove man found Thursday morning at the Bliss Woods Forest Preserve was an apparent suicide attempt, an official from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County said.

Laurie Metanchuk, the forest preserve’s director of community affairs, said the man was found with a gunshot wound to the head, and a gun was found next to him at Bliss Woods, which is at 5S660 Bliss Road in Sugar Grove Township.

She said the incident is being treated as an “apparent suicide attempt.”

She said the man was taken to a DuPage County hospital, and that his name was not being released. She said she later learned the man had died.

ST. CHARLES – When it came to celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary Wednesday, Emir Abinion wanted to go big.

So while they celebrated at a local restaurant, he surprised his wife, Patricia Abinion, with a two-sided mobile billboard.

The banners on the truck, which are about 15 feet by 20 feet, displayed their wedding photos and a note that said, “Happy 25th” and “I look forward to another 25 more.”

“My wife isn’t too keen on surprises,” he said. “But I thought I would do something special.”

The Abinions, who live in St. Charles, went out for dinner at La ZaZa’s Trattoria in St. Charles on Wednesday – the day of their anniversary – to celebrate.

That’s when Emir Abinion decided to surprise his wife with the billboard, and he said the restaurant staff was able to seat them near a window so they could catch a clear glimpse.

Emir Abinion said his wife had “a little bit of disbelief in her eyes” when she saw the billboard.

Sean Staats, 16, and Mikayla Anne Dick, 15, ran away about 8 p.m. Monday because their parents did not approve of their relationship, Dick’s mother, Jennifer, said. The couple dated previously and recently reconciled. Both left home with minimal cash and personal items, police said.

About 2 a.m. Tuesday, Staats sent his father a text message to say they were together and weren’t planning to return home because their parents didn’t support their relationship.

After their case was publicized Wednesday, police received two reports that teens matching their description

KANEVILLE – An event, the Bounce Back Benefit for Becky Nelson is set from 1 to 5 p.m.

Oct. 20 at the Kaneville Community Center, 2S101 Harter Road, Kaneville.

The event will help raise money for Becky Nelson’s medical expenses. She is a 2004 Kaneland graduate who was struck by a car July 1, and she suffered a traumatic brain injury and broken pelvis.

BURLINGTON – A special-education teacher for Central School District 301 was dismissed this week after an investigation showed she had an inappropriate relationship with a student, Superintendent Todd Stirn said.

Shari Piazza, 28, of Campton Hills was in her fourth year with the district, he said. She worked at Central High School.

She had been on administrative leave since Sept. 4 – two weeks into the school year – while the district investigated the allegation of the inappropriate relationship, Stirn said, describing that practice as standard.

“The district’s No. 1 priority is the safety and well-being of the students,” he said.

The district confirmed that Piazza had an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old student she worked with during the second semester of the 2012-13

year, Stirn said.

The Board of Education took action on his recommendation to dismiss her with cause at its regular meeting Monday, he said.

“The board upheld my recommendation in a 6-0 vote with one member absent,” Stirn said.

Piazza’s dismissal was immediate, he said.

BATAVIA – An Aurora woman has been charged with taking thousands of dollars from the Batavia company where she worked.

Serhonda Burnett, 35, of the 1600 Shamrock Court, Aurora, has been charged with theft by deception between $10,000 and $100,000, misappropriation of financial institution property and use of a credit or debit card with intent to defraud.

She had worked at PMI Energy, a trucking company at 1890 Suncast Lane in Batavia.

Charges were authorized Sept. 3, and Burnett was arrested Sept. 18. She posted a $7,500 bond and has an Oct. 15 court date.

According to court records, the allegations took place between Dec. 27, 2012, and June 27, 2013.

The charges include knowingly embezzling $32,069 from PMI Energy, funds that entrusted to the custody or care of First Community Financial Bank.

Burnett also is being charged with misuse of an American Express card having a total value of more than $150.

Minniti makes voice, presence felt

yan Minniti is known to raise his voice around Batavia football practice or in the locker room as teammates and coaches alike sometimes are shouted over by the fiery defensive tackle.

Fellow senior Anthony Thielk said the Bulldogs don’t mind the occasional sharp-tongued comments, knowing they come from the heart.

Minniti, one of the team’s captains, has earned his soap box, Thielk figures.

“He’s like the hardest-working, blue-collar kid you could find around here,” Thielk said. “He’s just old school. He works his butt off every day.”

Minniti has been among the most disruptive forces defensively for Batavia (3-1), which takes on West Chicago tonight in the Bulldogs’ homecoming game.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron said opponents have made dealing with the 5-foot11, 230-pound Minniti a focus of their gameplans this season, with minimal success.

“We can’t block him in practice, and I know other teams can’t block him, either,” Piron said. “He’s too quick off the ball. He’s too powerful. He can do too many things to you.”

Minniti had an especially dominant outing last week at Streamwood, helping compensate for the absence of fellow defensive line stalwart James Millette, who is out with an injury.

Minniti had a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery in the first half, during which he applied consistent pressure to Streamwood quarterback Mason Polich.

Batavia has hit a soft spot of its schedule, facing a winless opponent tonight for the second straight week.

Considering that, it might be Minniti’s leadership that has been more important than his play this week as he reinforces the coaching staff’s message.

“The coaches have been telling us we need to have our toughest practices to

stay at the level we need to be to beat St. Charles North, St. Charles East, teams like that,” Minniti said, referencing upcoming opponents.

“Carry it into the playoffs, so we still have a very high level of practice.”

The Bulldogs have regrouped nicely since a Week 2 home loss to Richards accounted for the program’s first regular-season varsity setback since the 2010 season.

“Obviously [Richards] was a big disappointment, but after that loss, it was a big motivation for the rest of the season,” Minniti said. “We’re going to keep on trucking.”

While four-time defending 5A state champion Montini’s street credibility is never in question, the Cadets’ raised many eyebrows across the Suburban Christian Conference with last week’s 2810 win at perennial power Marian Central.

Given time to operate, Montini quarterback Alex Wills is the total package, Broncos coach Chris Andriano said. Wills’ season credentials include a five-touchdown pass performance at East St. Louis in Week 2.

“He’s got what I would call a classic, throwing motion,” Andriano said. “He throws over the top with very nice follow-through. He’s a pocket-type kid. He’s got very good feet and he’s got zip on the ball. He can zip it in there if he needs to, and he has very good touch. Right now, he’s [clicking] at every phase of the game.”

Knowing what the Cadets are up against, Marmion coach Dan Thorpe thinks D-linemen such as Joe Talbot and Nick Ferraro need to find their way beyond a formidable Montini O-line semi-regularly to disrupt Montini’s polished, pass-game timing.

“We’ve got to get some sacks,” Thorpe said. “We’ve got to get some QB hurries.

We’ve got to be able to stop the run, when they do run the ball. … Any time you play somebody with speed, you’ve got to tackle in the open field.”

X-factor The playing surface at Marmion’s Fichtel Field – grass – could be the great equalizer for the Cadets.

“They are a different team playing on grass compared to playing on turf,” Thorpe said of Montini. “If you go back and look at the scores over the last four, five years, they’ve been in close ballgames on grass fields.”

Best-case scenario for the Broncos One of the bigger, more physical defenses Montini has fielded over the years overwhelms the Cadets’ offense.

Montini’s imposing ‘D’ is highlighted by defensive end Dylan Thompson, an Ohio State recruit, and Oak Park-River Forest transfer Nile Sykes, a major addition this season.

Andriano said teams have been creative in their blocking schemes and pre-snap motion to try to minimize Thompson’s impact at the line of scrimmage.

“There are a lot of smart guys out there, a lot of smart coaches,” Andriano said.

“We would probably try to do some of those very same things.”

Best-case scenario for the Cadets This time, Marmion finds a fourth-quarter solution for Montini.

Although Montini has won the past three meetings, the Cadets have given the Broncos a scare each time. Montini won, 30-22, last year, 13-6 in 2011 and 27-21 in overtime in 2010.

“We’ve been right there, so hopefully the percentages fall in our favor (tonight),” Thorpe said.

As far as late-game stamina goes, Thorpe likes his team’s depth at several positions, including running back, where hobbled standout Jordan Glasgow continues to share the workload at less than 100 percent in a rotation that includes fullback Lucas Warren and two-way performer Mike Montalbano.

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Montini 27, Marmion 17 Like usual, Montini has stood up to a cutthroat schedule, already owning wins over elite programs such as Maine South, East St. Louis and last week’s 30-7 drubbing of St. Francis.

The Cadets figure to give Montini a serious test on what promises to be an energized homecoming at Fichtel Field, but the Broncos are fully accustomed to taking quality teams’ best shots. This year’s Montini team appears to be stouter than usual defensively, so the Broncos’ “Drive for Five” is a realistic possibility.

PREP FOOTBALL WEEK 5 PREVIEW CAPSULES St. Charles North (2-2, 1-1 Upstate Eight Conference River) at Geneva (2-2, 1-1 UEC River), 7:30 p.m. today Last week: St. Charles North beat Elgin, 49-0; Geneva beat Larkin, 41-34.

The skinny: Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said his team has “issues” despite last week’s win at Larkin, and many of them are self-inflicted – turnovers, penalties, missed assignments. He said it’s been too long since the Vikings have played a clean game, which they might need in tonight’s crucial battle with North.

“We don’t walk around with all-staters or all-area players left and right, so our guys have to be on every, single play,” Wicinski said. “You let up at all one play,

and you see the result.” Wicinski said the Vikings don’t match up well with North’s hulking offensive line, and North Stars running back Evan Kurtz is enjoying a breakthrough season behind his blockers. North QB Erik Miller’s athleticism is another potential game-changer. “When he takes off and runs, that’s when I really noticed we could have some real problems,” Wicinski said. The North Stars’ defense is coming off its second shutout of the season but will have to contend with a Geneva offense that is developing momentum in its running game to go with ample success through the air.

Extra point: Geneva is 0-2 at home and St. Charles North is 0-2 on the road, so something’s got to give.

West Chicago (0-4, 0-2 UEC Valley) at Batavia (3-1, 2-0 UEC River), 7:30 p.m. today Last week: Batavia beat Streamwood, 56-14; West Chicago lost to Waubonsie Valley, 56-7.

The skinny: Considering West Chicago’s 3-5-3 defense and its occasional double-wing look offensively, with some spread, read option sprinkled in, the four days of practice leading up to game night might prove more valuable, long term, to Batavia than tonight’s homecoming game.

“It’s nice we get all that stuff we get to work on this week in practice,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said.

The skinny: East appears well positioned to bounce back from its first loss of the season in tonight’s homecoming matchup with winless Elgin. The Saints will look to shore up their kick coverage after Neuqua’s Mikey Dudek shredded the Saints on a pair of returns early in last week’s game. Saints H-back Phil Hopper is a growing force in the passing game, fresh off a 10-grab night at Neuqua, while junior running back Ramon Lopez could become a focal point of the offense with featured back Erik Anderson banged up from last week’s game.

Extra point: The Saints’ defense, which has allowed 21 points or more to each of their first four opponents, should be able to extract some confidence from this one.

The skinny: Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly and Co. are enthused about beginning division play tonight against Rochelle. “This is where it gets fun,” Fedderly said. “It’s going to be competitive. It’s going to be some good competition, so we’re excited about it.” The Hubs (averaging 53 points a game) have been dynamite offensively and are more multifaceted offensively than in years’ past out of their traditional, Wing-T sets. “They’ve got some really good athletes,” Fedderly said. “They’ve got a bunch of seniors in their skill positions that are very good athletes. They can throw it and do something after the catch, and they can run the ball.” Not only has Kaneland had to deal with the recent loss of star running back Jesse Balluff (ACL tear), but standout left tackle Joe Komel could miss his second straight game with a foot injury. Fedderly said Alex Snyder is Komel’s replacement at left tackle while Sam Bower fills in at Snyder’s right guard spot.

Extra point: Although this is Rochelle’s last year in the NI Big 12 East before switching to the West, Fedderly said Kaneland will face Rochelle in conference crossover matchups in 2014 and 2015.

Burlington Central (1-3, 1-1 Big Northern Conference East) at Genoa-Kingston (2-2, 2-0 BNC East), 7 p.m. today Last week: Burlington Central lost to Harvard, 17-13; Genoa-Kingston beat Rockford Christian, 42-21.

The skinny: Central is progressing after a rocky start to the season, though a heartbreaking loss to Harvard last week leaves the Rockets in difficult position. “When you’re 1-3, your attitudes change just a little bit,” Central coach Rich Crabel said.

“We’ve been working on that to keep our attitudes in a good place. We’ve had a good week of practice. Kids are taking care of the things we need to take care of.”

Extra point: Crabel said the Rockets are still looking for some leadership on their brand new offensive line. The unit’s lone senior, Michael Kielhack, has a low-key personality.

Aurora Christian (4-0, 2-0 SCC Blue) at St. Francis (3-1, 1-1 SCC Blue), 7 p.m. today Last week: Aurora Christian beat Wheaton Academy, 5214; St. Francis lost to Montini, 30-7.

The skinny: Aurora Christian has run roughshod on opponents so far this season but steps up in class considerably this week against St. Francis.

The Spartans are attempting to regroup from a disappointing showing against Montini in tonight’s matchup featuring two teams with high-end lineplay. Eagles coach Don Beebe recently called St. Francis running back James Butler one of the best backs in the state.

Extra point: This will be St. Francis’ first Friday night home game at its new stadium after two days of bad weather delayed the Spartans’ opening-week home game against Riverside-Brookfield to a Sunday.

St. Charles man ‘accepts the pain’ at marathon Joe Gongaware of St. Charles finished Sunday’s Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon in 4 hours, 27 minutes, 31 seconds.

For the 49-year old sales engineering manager, his time wasn’t necessarily of the essence. After running half-marathons in years past – including 2011 and 2012 at Fox Valley – the key words above are “finished” and “marathon” as Gongaware took his first career crack at 26.2 miles.

“You just have to make the personal commitment. It’s a lot of long, hard training during the summer. Saturday mornings for long runs and a few nights a week for short to medium runs,” Gongaware said. “I don’t like to use the term ‘bucket list,’ but it was just something that I would like to personally conquer.”

Gongaware went for his final training run Sept. 19, a three-mile workout in which he “felt like I was melting out there” in the warm, muggy

weather that preceded Sunday’s all but ideal conditions.

A St. Charles resident since 1991, Gongaware took up running only three years ago for the sport’s health benefits. The marathon was always the proverbial carrot that “puts you in a different category as far as running goes.”

Along the way, he encountered another threshold, too.

“The first about 19½ or 20 miles, I felt great, and then, like everybody says, the race starts at mile 20 because oh, man did my body say, ‘Enough is enough,’ ” Gongaware said. “To be pressing on for basically another 10K run, that’s really when you’ve got to dig deep and accept the pain.”

Does that mean another marathon is on Gongaware’s horizon?

“I’ll probably do another one,” he said, “but certainly not this year.”

The Bulldogs (5-3 overall, 4-2 UEC River) got a big round from Jacob Piechota to help keep those title hopes alive. Piechota fired an evenpar 36 to finish with the day’s low score.

“I didn’t play as well as

I should, but I’m still happy that I could help my team bring out the victory,” Piechota said. “My driver was working real well. I was putting real well … but my wedge about 50 yards and in was very below average.”

Despite the pitching problems, Piechota salvaged pars on seven of the holes and finished his round with a birdie on the 480-yard, par-5 third hole.

“Off the tee, I snap hooked my driver into the trees and

then I hit a great 6-iron [to within] about 20 feet [of the pin],” Piechota said. “I had an eagle putt and put that to about a couple inches and tapped in for birdie.”

Blake Lawrence shot a 38 for the Bulldogs, Matt Patton added a 40, and Nick Robinson carded a 41.

“Jacob’s playing really well,” DeBruycker said. “We got some scoring from the bottom of our lineup today, which is a good sign.”

A hopeful portent for the North Stars (7-5, 3-3) heading into postseason play was the return to form of No. 1 Raghav Cherala, who posted a 37.

“For some reason, he hasn’t been sharp,” North coach Rob Prentiss said. “He hasn’t been far off, but he hasn’t been at the level Raghav got us used to with the prior three years. So, hopefully, this is a good sign for him going into October.”

NORTH AURORA – In the Upstate Eight Conference River Division version of “Survivor,” the Batavia boys golf team gained immunity for another week Thursday with a 155-162 victory over St. Charles North at Fox Valley Golf Club.

Both teams came into the day with a pair of conference losses, leaving them hanging on for dear life in a conference race that will be decided during Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament at St. Andrews in West Chicago.

Geneva (6-0) and St. Charles East (5-1) finished atop the division in the dual meet standings.

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys soccer team left no doubt in anyone’s mind Thursday afternoon it was going to advance to the championship match of its own tournament.

The Saints only allowed two shots on goal in the opening 40 minutes and scored two goals within the first 20 minutes of play on their way to a 4-1 win against Marmion in the final round of pool play.

The win put the Saints into the title match of the St. Charles East Tournament against Upstate Eight rival Streamwood at noon Saturday.

Streamwood defeated Glen-

bard North, 1-0, to advance to the tournament final.

“I think our center-mids and our center-back really distributed the ball well up front to our forwards tonight,” Saints senior midfielder Andrew Shone said. “I think we really moved the ball well tonight. The last couple of games we have been trying to start out each game strong and get an early lead. We did that well tonight.”

The Saints took a 1-0 lead just less than two minutes into the match when senior forward Daniel DiLeonardi sent a right-footed shot past Cadets goalkeeper Matthew Fletcher (six saves) from about 6 yards out for the early lead.

The Saints’ lead grew to 2-0

with 20:10 left in the half when Shone took a through-ball pass and from about 12 yards out sent a right-footed shot past Fletcher, into the Marmion net.

“Being aggressive on offense when we have the ball was key for us tonight,” Shone said. “We were communicating well on offense tonight and making runs towards the net looking for that chance to score.”

Those chances to score would come again in the second half, but not before a scary moment. The match was stopped for a little more than 15 minutes with 21:45 left in regulation time when East senior goalkeeper Mike Novotny collided with Marmion senior Flynn Collins at the top of the

Saints’ penalty area.

Both players were down for a period of time, leaving Novotny hobbling off the field with an injured leg and Collins being taken away in an ambulance to Delnor Community Hospital. Cadets coach Ricky Del Toro said Thursday night Collins’ jaw was broken in two places and he is out for the season.

Collins had 15 goals this season for Marmion, including a pair of hat tricks.

“It is a huge loss for us,” Del Toro said. “We weren’t sure if it was knee-to-face or shin-toface, but it was a collision on the ground going for a loose ball.”

Once play resumed, the Saints (10-0-2) upped their

lead to 3-0 with 18:42 remaining when sophomore midfielder Evan DiLeonardi put the ball into the Marmion net from point-blank range.

Shone scored his second of the nightat the 18:01 mark for the 4-0 advantage.

The Cadets spoiled the shutout bid by the Saints when Marmion forward Landon Meyer scored with 8:45 remaining to make it 4-1. Still, it was an anticlimactic end to a much-anticipated matchup.

“I think once that collision happened in the second half, it kind of took the luster and fun out of the game,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “The safety of the kids is paramount in this game. I hope their player will be OK soon.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WEST CHICAGO – The St. Francis girls volleyball team steamrolled Wheaton Academy on Thursday in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover, 25-20, 25-9.

“Things were just pretty smooth,” said St. Francis coach Peg Kopec, whose team improved to 16-1 overall. “Our serving was pretty aggressive, I thought.”

Molly Haggerty finished with 11 kills, Kamryn Malloy had eight kills and Sam Dubiel supplied 16 digs for the Spartans, who, with the win, claimed the “Wheaton Cup.” The Warriors were led by 14 assists from Sarah McClain.

Kaneland 2, Rochelle 0 (2520, 25-18): At Maple Park, Jenny Lubic had 22 assists and Ellie Dunn had 12 kills, five digs and four service points as

It came in their only loss to the Lions in the teams’ past 10 meetings.

After committing eight false starts in the preseason, the Bears have a clean sheet with zero false starts through three games. They are one of four teams (Panther, Colts, Steelers) without the 5-yard pre-snap penalty. Through three games in 2012, the Bears had six false starts.

This is clearly a different unit up front, and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler can go into Detroit on Sunday with a more comfortable mentality.

“I don’t know what [offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer] does in their meetings, but those guys are focused,” Cutler said Thursday. “You’ve got three really good veterans on the left side and then the two young guys, they just don’t want to mess up. They don’t want to be the ones that set us back five or 10 [yards] – and they’re conscious of that.”

“As many pre-snap penalties in training camp and OTAs, they’ve done a great job of locking in and being focused and knowing whenever we’re going to change up the snap count, knowing whenever we’re going to have a couple of plays, and they’ve got to listen up,” Trestman said.

“They’ve been really good.”

Keeping an eye on Suh: The Bears’ offense is well aware of the challenges Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh can cause.

“A lot of people have tried [to slow Suh]. It’s not easy,” Trestman said.

Suh has only eight tackles this season, but Pro Football Focus has credited him with 17 quarterback hurries.

Injury update: Charles Tillman (knee/groin) missed Thursday’s practice, along with Sherrick McManis (quad). Cornerback Zack Bowman (knee) practiced in full.

“We feel really part of the team,” Barrett said. “From the start, when we came in, we were kind of nervous about being able to fit in, but the girls were really welcoming.”

The assimilation process goes much easier when you’re as skilled as Barrett and Loberg. The former remains a consistently solid force at the net. The latter boasts 38 kills in her past two Upstate Eight Conference River Division matches.

Former classmates and teammates at Geneva Middle School North who also have shared a club team, Barrett and Loberg look forward to being each other’s sounding boards for the rest of the season and years to come.

“We’ve done, like, everything together for club and everything and we know each other really well,” Barrett said. “And it was great for each other to be there and support each other.”

NEIGHBORS Learning comes in many forms When I read that a local elementary school had cancelled a field trip to Springfield I began to frame this column in my mind.

The explanation, as I understood it, went along the lines that the experience was no longer a good fit with current learning outcomes. No, I am not familiar enough with the issues to have a rebuttal.

What I have are reflections on my long ago field trips and a report on lessons learned.

The time frame is the decade of the 1950s to the early ’60s. Keep in mind, the world then went from a time of prosperity and satisfaction to an explosive time of questioning and change. Reaching out to a wider world was essential.

We, the class of ’56, entered the ’50s decade while still enrolled at the late, great Evan Shelby School. The most memorable event took place in the classroom but was hardly in a lesson plan.

Ernie Pike ran into the fifthgrade classroom and wailed: “Mrs. DeWitz! I swallowed my pencil.”

This calm and intolerantof-humor teacher was not impressed. Ernie stressed the significant element,“But it was an indelible pencil!”

Lesson learned: In life, squeak your wheel to gain attention.

I missed most of the ’49-’50 academic year (the time it took to recover from polio – October to spring). John Albright, a wonderful teacher, made lots of home visits and encouraged me to get back to school by the time of “the trip.”

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry So, there I was on the train to Springfield along with my school buddies, feeling adventurous and – in my case – feeling fortunate to be able to try out my walking shoes.

The stop at New Salem offered a chance to ponder Abraham Lincoln’s journey from a log cabin to the White House.

A stop at his tomb brought to mind what might have been.

Later that sentiment was to be repeated all too often.

Lesson learned: Not all politicians wind up in jail, and it’s OK to be proud of Illinois.

The high school trip to New York and Washington brought out predictable encounters – with historic sites, well-known celebrities (doing the Twist at Chubbie Checker’s and the wonder of the Rockettes on stage at Radio City Music Hall).

Some of us were disappointed that our New Yorker hotel room was facing an inner courtyard and had no view. Soon, however, the room was a premium viewing point for the sad and gruesome remains of a suicide victim.

Lesson learned: There is more to a big city than the bright lights.

While at the University of Wisconsin there were a number of off-campus experiences.

pun State Prison. The highlight came when browsing through the laundry area. Our guide pointed to an ordinary-looking inmate stationed at a huge washing machine. He waved to us as we were being informed that we had been acknowledged by Ed Gein, well-known killer and the inspiration for Hannibal Lector.

Lesson learned: Not all prisoners are politicians. At least one was into making lamp shades, not money.

Another university sanctioned road trip went from Madison to Pasadena for the 1960 Rose Bowl. The train was nicknamed “The Schlitz train” to acknowledge the donor of the complimentary liquid refreshment. “High glee” does not fully describe the mood and the anticipation.

The Badgers lost to Washington. On board and pulling out of the station, a rumor quickly spread that there was no beer. The deep depression was lifted when the train pulled into a siding at Barstow, and the beer was loaded to the cheers of the previously tearful Badger fans.

Lesson learned: In life, you win some and you lose some.

There’s another character-building game at Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.

Wish I could do that road trip!

Streamlined energy defines Volkswagen Jetta In 2012, Volkswagen redesigned the Jetta to keep up with the competition in the midsize sedan market.

Better materials, such as a soft-touch dashboard, replaced plastics on the interior. On the exterior, a wider stance and a creased beltline running from headlamps to taillights gave it a slightly more sporty look than prior models. The changes continue into the 2014 models.

Powerplants remained essentially the same with slight differences.

For customer appreciation, VW also put one of the simplest to operate sound systems into the Jetta to oversee the multiple possibilities available. An example is in order.

There is a button that reads BAND and when pressed the options include AM, FM or XM satellite radio. If a radio band is pushed, that band appears on a 7-inch information-navigation screen. A dial then helps the seeker search for the particular radio station desired.

No punching a touchscreen or moving a knob in various directions (BMW take note), but a simple turning of a dial. Once the dial is turned to the chosen station, push it in and, presto, it begins to play.

Volume also is controlled by a dial and not pushing a thumb or finger on various arrows on the touch screens of competitors. This combination of push buttons and control dials is probably the simplest to understand in the midsize sedan market.

Powerplants include 2-liter, 115-horsepower and 1.8-liter turbocharged 170 horsepower gasoline engines and a 140-horsepower turbo diesel mated either to five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. Engines are four cylinders. Prices range from $16,720 for a base S mod-

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper el to $28,495 for a GLI Autobahn. In between are 12 other Jetta variations, including the $18,895 SE, $23,195 TDI diesel and $25,590 SEL. The SEL was tested recently and was typical of a Jetta with good leg room front and rear, a 15.5 cubic foot trunk, which is huge for a midsize sedan, streamlined looks and a zippy economical powerplant.

The SEL has the dual overhead cam 1.8-liter four-cylinder mated to the six-speed automatic transmission. There seemed to be a little roughness in decelerations. During the test week, the 3,070-pound sedan averaged 28.7 miles per gallon in mixed city, country

and interstate driving with two adults aboard. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the SEL automatic at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined.

Acceleration was quick in the tested turbo and, unofficially, the race from 0 to 60 miles per hour took less than 7 seconds. Regular fuel is recommended for the 14.5-gallon tank.

This is a very quiet, solid and comfortable sedan, whether sitting in the front or the rear seats. To some extent, the aerodynamic curvature of the roof makes entry and exit a stooping exercise for taller people (in excess of 6 feet in height). For a midsize sedan, leg room in front and the rear is generous. Officially, measurements are 41.2 and 38.1 inches, front and rear, respectively.

Performance comfort is enhanced by a multilink rear suspension with sport-tuned spring and damper settings.

Coil springs, telescopic dampers and antiroll bars are components of the rear and front strut suspension system.

During hard cornering exercises, there was little inside wheel spin. The ride is on the hard side.

A new honeycomb grill, front spoiler, front fog lamps, bright brake calipers and dual exhaust tips are exterior trim elements.

SEL has 17-inch alloys as standard wheels (P225 radial tires). Brakes are discs, vented with 11.3-inch rotors in front and solid with 10.7-inch rotors in the rear. On dry pavement from 60 miles per hour, the brakes brought the car to a stop on a straight line in less than 130 feet, which

is better than average for a midsize sedan.

The eight-speaker Fender audio system serves AM-FM-satellite radio, compact disc player, MP3 playback, auxiliary inputs and iPod connection. The SEL has a touchscreen navigation system , Bluetooth and CarNet telematics.

Power includes front seats, heated exterior mirrors, door locks and express windows.

The SEL has a rearview camera, heated windshield washer nozzles, air conditioning, cruise control and intermittent wipers.

On the safety side, stability and traction controls are standard on all Jetta models, as well as front driver and passenger front and side airbags, curtains for both rows, headrests complementing seat belts, a four-wheel antilock braking system, brake assist and electronic brake distribution. In the Jetta, stability control electronics detect skidding and helps prevent it from breaking out of control.

The SEL benefits from the recent Jetta redesign so that today the car is 2.9 inches longer at 182.2 inches. This isn’t a whole lot, but it does allow for more leg room and trunk space. There is a pass-through from the 15.5-cubic foot, lighted trunk to the split and fold rear seats.

Horizontal lines help define the GLI exterior. Horizontal blades in the grille and in the lower intake are designed to make the car look wider than it is. Pronounced wheel arches add visual width and weight to the car.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24hour roadside assistance, and scheduled maintenance is free for two years or 24,000 miles.

Powertrain coverage is five years or 60,000 miles.

Family loyalty dies on the vine in ‘You Will Be My Son’

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Although it’s set in modern-day France, the plot of the engrossing drama “You Will Be My Son” feels vaguely like it was ripped from the stone tablet headlines of ancient Rome. Like an emperor dismayed over his unremarkable offspring, aging vintner Paul de Marseul (Niels Arestrup) sets out to replace his heir apparent.

Paul is a repugnant character. He’s a bully to his son, Martin (Lorant Deutsch), and says creepy things to his daughter-in-law, Alice (Anne Marivin).

He’s also one of those insipid people who can report on each scintilla of flavor in a glass of wine, while belittling those who don’t have his super-sensory skills for detecting notes of peony.

After studying viticulture, Martin has returned with Alice to his father’s estate and vineyard, hoping to pick up the skills he hasn’t learned in the classroom. Since Paul is a widower and Martin is his only son, it seems as if the offspring is destined to eventually run

the storied vineyard, which has been in the Marseul family for generations.

There’s only one problem: Paul detests every aspect of Martin, including his bitten fingernails, his habit of jogging, his stutter and his inefficiency at fathering a son of his own. When Paul’s friend and the skilled head harvester of his vineyard, Francois (Patrick Chesnais), is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Martin is determined to take over and prove himself. His attempts, predictably, turn out below par. And right on cue, Francois’ son, Philippe (Nicolas Bridet), shows up. He happens to be the head winemaker for the Coppola Winery in California.

Where Martin is milquetoast and seemingly on the verge of tears at all times, Philippe is dashing and assured.

More importantly, where Martin couldn’t detect a floral finish if his head was in a rosebush, Philippe can wax poetic about how licorice and hints of strawberry commingle. Paul immediately makes known his preference for the newcomer, to the chagrin of both Martin and the dying Francois.

It would be easy to make a movie pitting Paul, the deadbeat dad, against Martin, the long-suffering descendant who deserves his multimillion-dollar inheritance. But director Gilles Legrand, who co-wrote the script, opts for a more difficult and satisfying approach. Paul is unabashedly cruel, but Martin acts insufferably childish. Worse, anyone with an ounce of self-respect probably would have deserted Paul long ago, but Martin sticks around even though soul-crushing abuse is all but guaranteed.

That being said, “You Will Be My Son” is not a subtle movie. Some of the characterizations and music feel heavy-handed, and one major plot point late in the film feels inauthentic. The justice might taste sweet, but it doesn’t have the exquisite complexity of a nice glass of cabernet sauvignon.

• “You Will Be My Son” received twoand-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains a sexual situation and language. The film is in French with subtitles. It runs 102 minutes.

Woman questions boyfriend’s support of job change Dear Abby: I am the mother of a 4-year-old daughter and pregnant with my second child.

My boyfriend and I live in a nice house and have a comfortable lifestyle. We each pay our own bills, and I pay half the mortgage that is in his name.

I am extremely unhappy at my job. The job itself isn’t the problem; it’s the management team and its effect on office morale.

They treat us employees like dirt, thus everyone is always fighting with each other. I try to stay out of it, but I am unhappy to the core there. I want to find another job after my maternity leave, but I’m afraid my soon-to-be-fiance won’t be willing to pick up the slack financially while I’m temporarily unemployed.

Repair of hemorrhoids can be done in doctor’s office Dear Doctor K: I’ve suffered with bleeding hemorrhoids for many years and lifestyle changes haven’t helped. My doctor suggested surgery. Is this risky?

Dear Reader: Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus. Many people have both internal and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the anus, but can sometimes push out through the opening of the anus. External hemorrhoids are located at the rim of the anus.

Both types can cause bleeding, itching and discomfort.

The lifestyle changes you’ve probably tried include increasing your fiber intake, taking warm sitz baths, drinking plenty of water and applying ice packs or petroleum jelly to your anal area.

You’re also likely to have tried over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams, ointments and suppositories.

If none of these have worked, it might indeed be time to consider surgical repair. My Harvard Medical School colleague, Dr. William Kormos, recently talked about surgical treatments for hemorrhoids in the Harvard Men’s Health Watch. Here is what he discussed: Some procedures can be done in a doctor’s office, but only on internal hemorrhoids. One such

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff procedure is really “low tech”: rubber band ligation (RBL). In RBL, the doctor places a small band around an internal hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply.

Ligation can cause minor pain.

Another office-based technique is infrared photocoagulation (IPC). IPC uses infrared light to heat and scar the hemorrhoid.

IPC causes less pain than RBL, but it may be less effective for severe hemorrhoids.

The final office-based treatment is sclerotherapy. The doctor injects an irritating chemical solution into the hemorrhoid or surrounding area. This solution triggers a reaction that causes the hemorrhoid to shrink. (I’ve put an illustration of these three office-based procedures on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

When office-based treatments don’t work, hemorrhoids may have to be surgically removed in an operating room. This is called hemorrhoidectomy. The surgery is effective for both internal and external hemorrhoids. However, there often is pain following the surgery, which can be controlled

by medication. Sometimes there is some bleeding following the operation, but this is usually a minor problem. On unusual occasions, the pain as the surgery heals can cause temporary difficulty in urinating.

A final surgical option is hemorrhoid stapling. In this procedure, a special device staples and removes hemorrhoid tissue. Used only for internal hemorrhoids, stapling is less painful than hemorrhoidectomy and appears to be almost as effective.

We don’t really know why hemorrhoids develop. The veins that turn into hemorrhoids are the blood vessels through which blood returns from the anus and nearby area to the heart. When the flow of blood is partially blocked, the veins swell up. Conditions that cause such blockage are numerous: pregnancy, tumors in the pelvis (such as large fibroid tumors of the uterus), chronic constipation or just prolonged sitting. That last one is another good reason for people with desk jobs to get up several times an hour and walk around.

Parents tell daughter to babysit rather than ask Dr. Wallace: My parents were divorced several years ago.

They thought it best that I live with my father. I love my father very, very much. He is a super dad. I really don’t know where my mother is and haven’t heard from her in over a year.

About 10 months ago, my father started dating a lady who works with him. It turned serious, so serious that I now have a stepmother. She is a nice lady, and I like her, and I like her two children, ages 2 and 4.

They are well-behaved children.

My problem is that whenever my dad and stepmother want to go out on weekends, I’m stuck as their babysitter. I’m not asked if I could watch the children. I’m told, “You are going to watch the children.” That means that I can’t go out with my friends or my boyfriend the nights my stepmother and my dad decide they’re going out. It’s no big deal, but I’m also not paid for caring for the children.

I think a babysitter should be called in on the nights I have something planned.

There are many good babysitters in our neighborhood, but my stepmother says she’s “not comfortable leaving the children with a stranger.”

That is often true, but there can still be matters out of your control. Take today’s deal, for example. Look at only the North-South hands.

In which contract would you choose to play?

When the deal was originally played, the bidding went as shown. North-South were using two-over-one game-forcing. On the third round, South broke a golden rule of Blackwood by using the convention with two fast losers in both unbid suits, with no guarantee that partner had a first- or second-round control in those suits. South should have bid four spades. Then, North probably would have passed, although with controls in both hearts and clubs, there would have been a good case for his using Blackwood.

Six diamonds and six spades are both excellent contracts, apparently losing only one club trick. However, at the table, against six diamonds, West led the club jack. East won with her king and realized that, unless West had a slow trump trick like jack-fourth, there was only one way to defeat the slam – shift to a spade. West happily ruffed and South unhappily wrote minus 100 on her scoresheet.

Then North pointed out that six spades was making.

Against that slam, East’s best lead is a low club! If North carelessly plays low from the board, West wins and gives his partner a diamond ruff.
