Photo restorer opening gallery

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A photographer by trade, Patrick McGleam became interested in restoring old photographs after being given an old personal computer in the early 1990s.

“I had an affinity for playing with Photoshop,” said McGleam, 58, of St. Charles. “It was like being in a darkroom [but] without all the chemicals and smells and stuff.”

McGleam found that he liked being able to manipulate photographs, and people started giving him old photos to restore or retouch.

And so a new business opportunity was born for McGleam. He opened McGleam Studios and worked out of his home for the past 15 years. But on Aug. 1, he relocated to the Berry House, 227 S. Third St., Geneva.

“I decided I needed the exposure,” McGleam said of moving to Geneva’s downtown. “I’m hoping to become the guy people come to in the western suburbs.”

He said he plans to have an open house soon to show his gallery of before and after photos he has retouched or restored.

“I scan it, or, if it’s too large, I rephotograph Patrick it, and then I do McGleam Photoshop and print it out to a real print,” McGleam said. “Almost everything I get is either oneof-a-kind or 100 years old, and that’s no exaggeration.”

Some photos he’s restored are of famous people, such as one of Harold Washington and Desmond Tutu at an interfaith prayer breakfast with a rab-

bi speaking at the podium, he said.

Washington, the first African-American mayor of Chicago, served from 1983 until his death in 1987. Tutu, now retired, was the first black South African Archbishop of Cape Town and primate of the Anglican Church of South Africa, according to www.tutu. org.

Another photo he restored was valuable only to the family and brought tears to both McGleam and his customer, he said.

“Most valuable photos don’t look like much at all,” McGleam said. “I had a snapshot of a middle-aged man from the 1970s sitting at a picnic table at a forest preserve with a woman standing next to him.”

McGleam cautioned the man that the process to restore the old cracked and folded

photo was “not inexpensive.”

“He said, ‘This was the last time my family was together.

My mother died, and my dad put all of us up for adoption,’” McGleam said. “He found his sister 30 years later, and she pulled this picture out of a trunk.”

By the time McGleam finished fixing the photo’s cracks caused by folding, he found images of the man’s two sisters sitting on their dad’s lap, another little boy and the customer himself could be seen standing in the background between two trees.

“We were both in tears when I handed him the picture,” McGleam said. “To him, it was priceless.”

The wolf man

Elburn man handles many animals

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Al Butler’s experience with handling animals started when he was just 4 years old.

It started with kittens, but he has expanded to a broad range of animals, including dogs, parrots, horses and even wolves.

The Elburn resident is so passionate about wolves that, for the past two years, he’s been working to create a habitat and residential program to help educate the public about the importance of preserving the few species of wolves left in the world. There used to be 53 different species of wolves, but that number has diminished to 12.

Butler has 36 years of experience in behavioral science and said he prefers to work with animals that most people would consider challenging.

Although they’re similar animals, working with wolves is a little different than working with dogs, he said.

“The domestic animals have a different side. They don’t fear us like a wolf would instinctively,” he said.

For about eight years, Butler has worked with Denise Kinsey of Naperville, helping to train a high content-blood wolf dog named S’uk’a.

Kinsey, who is the director of public relations of the East Coast for Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Lucerne Valley, Calif., said there’s a big difference between wolf dogs and actual wolves in that purebred wolves are not trainable.

She said S’uk’a is the “ambassador for Wolf Mountain,” often making appearances at schools and festivals to educate people about wolves.

“A wolf dog is a domesticated animal. It has never been in the wild,” she said.

“People breed them. The organization I work for is 100 percent against the breeding of wolf dogs.”

“He’s awesome,” she said.

“Otherwise, he wouldn’t be working with us.”

Butler said he used S’uk’a’s help in the past to help get rid of a coyote that was being baited by some people who were feeding it. The coyote had gotten a little too comfortable around people, so Butler said he walked some property lines with S’uk’a, who marked her territory,

keeping the coyotes at bay.

Butler said training pet shop animals to sit and stay bores him, which is why he prefers working with “anything that doesn’t fit in a box.”

“Those are the ones that I really excel at,” he said. “I like trying to figure out how to communicate with them.”

Kinsey said it’s particularly important to expose people to wolves because so many species have been lost, especially in recent years. She said three breeds have disappeared since 2009 because of hunting. She said wolves are important for keeping the ecosystem intact, and their disappearance means there likely will be an overabundance of caribou, deer, rabbits and other types of wildlife.

Butler also is an ordained pastor who ministers to youth and runs a pet-sitting busi-

ness. He said those are ways he can use his skills as an animal behaviorist to help people, too.

“It’s just building a bond,” he said of working with both animals and people. “[That’s the key] with anything no matter what you do.”

For now, Butler is working on raising $500,000 to open his own sanctuary in Elburn, which would require 20 acres of land.

“I truly enjoy what I do,” he said. “I wouldn’t know what else to do if I wasn’t doing this.”

Kane mulls health insurance alternatives to offset increase

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County could pay 9 percent more to provide county workers with health insurance next year, thanks in no small part to the Affordable Care Act. But Kane’s insurance consultants say the county could save hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next few years, if not in 2014, if it changes how it insures its workers.

Representatives of Libertyville-based employee benefits consulting firm Global Benefits Group on Tuesday presented the Kane County Board with a breakdown of what the county should expect to pay in 2014 to insure its more than 1,200 employees.

Global president Laurence Marx told the board that the county should expect to pay about $15.5 million next year, or about $1.3 million more for employee health insurance benefits through Blue Cross/ Blue Shield.

Marx said the increase was driven by several factors, including more claims. In 2013, he said, the county government will pay $13 million in claims, or about 4.3 percent more than last year when compared to premiums.

The increase ends a string of years in which Kane County government paid less in claims than the year before.

But Marx said market-driven increases accounted for only about 60 percent of the $1.3 million increase. The remaining 40 percent of the increase can be ascribed to fees and other charges associated with the federal Affordable Care Act. With that in mind, Marx said the county could consider transitioning the county’s insurance coverage model from fully insured through Blue Cross to a self-insurance model, in which Blue Cross administers the plan, but the county government pays the claims.

Marx said such a model could save the county significant money, if the Kane board is willing to assume a certain level of risk.

Based on past claims activity, Global estimated the county could pay about $14.9 million in 2014, a savings of $600,000 vs. what the county had negotiated with Blue Cross for full insurance.

Should claims spike, however, the county could pay up to $16.6 million next year, or about $1.1 million more, Global estimated.

But Marx said switching to self-insurance would carry a long-term payoff.

He estimated the county would have saved a total of $1.75 million over the last four years if it had been self-insured.

Additionally, he noted, if the county switches to self insurance, the county would be exempt from a 3 percent to 4.5 percent tax levied on fully insured health plans by the federal government under Obamacare.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the presentation on switching the county’s health insurance model was more than just idle talk.

He said the County Board will need to decide next month whether it wants to take that step, as the county’s budget will need to be completed in October and approved in early November.

Park plan shelved as officials look at alternatives

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Township officials haven’t yet pronounced their hopes for a new large park dead.

But Sugar Grove Township’s leaders say they have shelved the project, and may explore a range of alternatives that could include whether the township wants to be in the park development business at all.

Later this fall, Sugar Grove Township officials will gather to begin discussing the township government’s wants and needs for the next five years.

And Township Supervisor

Tom Rowe said it is not yet clear how the plan to build a park, which could include lighted ballfields and other amenities, would fit into that strategic plan.

The township began discussing plans to build such a park last year, when former township supervisor Dan Nagle and others first floated the idea to buy about 30 acres on the Prairie Glen, just south of the Sugar Grove Public Library and near village hall and the fire protection district’s station at the end of Municipal Drive.

As originally proposed, the park could have included the ballfields, a band shell, stor-

age facility, restrooms and concessions. The park also would have been used for additional parking for the annual Corn Boil festival.

In the months since, however, leadership at the township has changed, as voters selected a new supervisor and board of trustees. Those new elected officials have proven cooler to the idea.

At the same time, Rowe said the township has run into problems finding other taxing bodies with which to partner to purchase the land and develop the park.

He said the township could proceed with the plan, if it could partner with the Sugar

Police Chief James Keegan; Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon; and Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda will participate.

Tickets are $80 a person, and all proceeds benefit Renz Addiction Counseling Center’s youth prevention education programs.

Grove Road District. But the support of the road district depends on its ability to build a new road maintenance facility on the park site, too.

And Sugar Grove village officials will not allow that to happen, said Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels.

The proposed maintenance facility would be built too close to a residential neighborhood, Michels said.

“We have industrial parks and other spaces we’d rather see the road district move into,” he said.

Michels also said developing such a park is not high on the village’s priorities list, as

he said the Sugar Grove Park District already has committed to a number of other parks within the village.

Given the village’s position on the matter, Rowe said the township has pulled back its plans to be re-evaluated.

“It’s just really not an ideal site for us any longer,” Rowe said. “Without the road district a part of this, we will have lost our one and only financial partner.

“And this isn’t a project we want to do by ourselves.”

He said the township will produce its five-year plan either later this fall or over the winter.

GENEVA – Laurence “Larry” Dabrowski, of the Geneva area, passed away suddenly Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at age 54.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thaddeus Dabrowski and Rosalie Greenlee; and sister, Theresa Dabrowski.

He is survived by his longtime partner, Vickie Hartley, who feels a great loss at his early passing. He also is survived by four daughters, Nicole Tormey, Tara Steffan, Amber and Christina Dabrowski; and nine grandchildren. His grandchildren include Kayla, Rachael, John and Dylan Tormey, Jacob and Alyssa Darnell, Aubrey Steffan, and Aiden and Joseph Rudofski. He was very special to Melody, Steve, John and Katie Hartley. He had special grandchildren, Ian and Cody Newman, and Meaghan and John Hartley Jr., who will miss him.

Larry had been employed at Wal-Mart for more than five years, where he will be greatly missed.

Per his wishes, his body was donated for scientific research to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

ST. CHARLES – Thomas Lee Matthews, 71, of St. Charles, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, after a long illness.

Tom was born in 1942 in Berwyn, to Frederick George Matthews and Helen Elizabeth Anderle Matthews, and always was proud of his English and Czech heritage. He graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in 1959 and studied mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he graduated with honors in 1965, and became a lifelong fan of the Illini football team.

After college, Tom worked for Western Electric/Lucent Technologies for 44 years. While working there, he was “set up” on a blind date with another Western Electric employee, Kathy Kahler Matthews, whom he married in 1968. He was the proud father of daughter Sarah Elizabeth; and baby granddaughter Cirenya Nicole, was the apple of his eye.

Tom was an avid golf player and a charter member of the Pine Hollow Athletic Club. He also loved to fish and attend art exhibits. He was a passionate and curious reader, especially on the subject of local history. Tom also enjoyed unusual clocks and trees, as well as antique fire trucks and maps. He was also a lifelong music lover: a long-time bass in the choir of St. Patrick Church in St. Charles and for the last 15 years, a devoted volunteer for the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Tom is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughter, Sarah Jacobs (Trent); granddaughter, Cirenya Jacobs; brothers, Fred and Mike

(Sue); sister, Pat Calvert; as well as many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Parade units will begin staging at 5 p.m. in the student lot at Batavia High School off West Wilson Street. The parade will start at 5:30 p.m. and will go east on Wilson Street to Lincoln Street, turn right onto southbound Lincoln to Main Street and turn right

onto westbound Main Street, ending in the Batavia High School parking lot at Main Street and Millview Drive.

D-101 approves budget

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101’s budget for 2013-14 shows a $365,470 surplus.

Batavia school board members Tuesday voted to approve the budget, which shows revenues of $81.1 million and expenses of almost $81 million.

There were no public comments made about the budget before board approval.

The district is set to collect $57 million in property

taxes, an almost 6 percent increase from last year.

Most of that increase stems from property that was in a tax increment financing district in Aurora that included Chicago Premium Outlets Mall, said Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance.

That district expired in 2012.

A TIF district allows the amount of tax revenue a taxing district receives from the area to be frozen at current levels.

A TIF district can be in place for up to 23 years.

Monn said the TIF district is conservatively estimated to bring in more than $4.2 million in new operating revenue during 2014, with $2.1 million being applicable to the 2013-14 budget.

Other major revenue changes in the 2013-14 budget include an increase of $106,000 in general state aid, an increase of $1 million in the transportation reimbursement and a $253,000 drop in federal revenues because of the sequester.

About $51 million in salaries and benefits are included in the tentative budget.

ST. CHARLES – Work on a parking lot serving several businesses along Randall Road in St. Charles has been interrupted because of a union protest.

Laborers’ Local 582 has spent about a month protesting the construction on the parking lot that serves such businesses as La Huerta Supermarket, Colonial Cafe and Mr. Samurai Steak and Sushi just north of the intersection with Prairie Street.

Tuesday, two inflatable rats were set up along Randall Road, and union representatives held a sign alleging the project’s general contractor, VFS Concrete, pays substandard wages and benefits. The picketers declined to comment, indicating their sign outlined their position.

Vito Scavelli of VFS Concrete Inc., a nonunion company, said the union is trying to make a nuisance out of the job site.

“We’re trying to improve the shopping center,” he said.

Describing the union’s tactics as “strong-arm,” Scavelli said the union has put pressure on his asphalt supplier, which stopped delivering supplies this week.

Scavelli said he has yet to make arrangements with another supplier.

“I’m playing the waiting game,” he said.

A phone call seeking comment from Laborers’ Local 582 was not returned by late Tuesday afternoon.

Although parts of it remain under construction, the parking lot is open to motorists.

Phil Brasse – asset manager for the property owner, Angel Associates – said work was hoped to be finished by Sept.

1 on the more than 200-space parking lot. The construction is about two-thirds complete, he said.

“We’d just like to get it done,” Brasse said.

LASTING EFFECTS Childhood obesity can cause a host of problems – from health to emotional Mary Westerholm knows the advice she gives to children and adults with weight issues sometimes is a hard sell.

But Westerholm, a physician with Cadence Health, said she talks to them from a place of understanding because she struggled with her weight as an adolescent.

While Westerholm has been at a healthy weight for 10 years, she has to deliberately eat healthy every day.

“It was always an off-andon battle for me. In college, I learned how to exercise and eat right,” she said. “I think for an overweight adolescent, while they know they’re overweight, it’s really embarrassing and difficult to talk about.”

She sees the problem of childhood obesity getting worse.

“Part of the problem is

Eighty percent of people who are obese as kids tend to stay obese. If you even begin becoming overweight and obese as a child, it’s so hard to change that going into adulthood. I think this is only going to get worse as the generations go on.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity in the United States has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

In 2010, more than onethird of children and adolescents were considered overweight or obese.

fat is considered overweight or obese. Doctors take several factors into consideration – including weight, age, height and gender – to determine whether a child fits one of those categories.

One consequence of the increasing number of overweight children is that more kids are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition that affects the way one’s body metabolizes sugar, or glucose, which is the body’s main source of fuel.

“We used to talk about diabetes as adult onset diabetes and juvenile diabetes, but now Type 2 diabetes is so prevalent among kids that we don’t call it adult onset diabetes anymore,” said Elissa Bassler, CEO of the Illinois

Public Health Institute. “It’s just Type 2 diabetes.”

Childhood obesity can cause a host of other problems in addition to diabetes.

“We just know that kids very often experience not just one problem associated with being overweight, but multiple problems,” said Beverly Henry, an associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. “We don’t even know how many things can go wrong when you have diabetes for, in essence, twice as long as we have seen it with adults.”

“Everything that we think about with chronic diseases for adults – heart disease, diabetes, things like that – may occur even earlier with these kids,” Henry said.

Many school vending machines in county dispensing healthier foods

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Many students in Kane County looking to satisfy their hunger by getting a candy bar at their school’s vending machine are out of luck.

Since October 2006, state law has banned any foods that have more than 35 percent of their calories from fat from elementary and middle school vending machines.

School districts in Kane County also are trying to limit student access to vending machines. There are no vending machines in elementary schools in Batavia School District 101, said Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance.

And the vending machines at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia are on a timer to restrict access during the school day. After the school day has ended, students have access only to beverages and foods that

meet the nutritional guidelines established by the government.

“They are healthier types of snacks and not any pop,” Monn said.

At St. Charles School District 303, vending machines are in the teachers’ lounges at the elementary and middle schools, said Seth Chapman, the district’s assistant superintendent of business services/chief financial officer.

“I think childhood obesity is an issue we have to be focused on,” Chapman said.

“I think the state and federal government are doing what they can. We want to make sure we are providing the right things for the students and are complying with state and federal programs.”

Chapman said he doesn’t know yet how the United States Agriculture Department’s new “Smart Snacks in School” standards will affect the district.

The new rules, an-

nounced in June, require the U. S. Agriculture Department to establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools, beyond the federally supported meals programs.

School districts will have a year to comply with the new rules, which mandate several requirements. Any food sold in a school must be a “whole grain-rich” grain product; or have as the first ingredient a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy product or a protein food; or be a combination food that contains at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable; or contain 10 percent of the daily value of one of the nutrients – calcium, potassium, vitamin D or dietary fiber – of public health concern in the 2010 dietary guidelines for Americans.

The rules also will apply only to foods sold on campus during the school day. Food sold at after-school events will not be subject to the new rules.

Westerholm said it’s important to get parents involved in their child’s weight struggles and notes she gives most of her advice to parents.

“If you think about it, kids that are 8 and 9 years old, they are not the ones going to the grocery store and doing the shopping,” she said. “I try to put most of the responsibility on the parents, especially when I am dealing with younger children.”

And it’s never too early to make sure your child has a healthy diet.

“We see trends for child obesity starting even in infancy,” Westerholm said. “I really try to take a preventative approach from the get-go, and developing healthy eating patterns early on. It’s so much easier to prevent this issue than to treat it.”

Westerholm noted that changes made for the health benefit of children should be made by adults, too, as kids follow the example of their parents.

“Parents that eat healthy and are active and exercise, those are patterns that they will see and will follow,” she said.

Westerholm reviews with her patients what they eat daily, and uses that as a springboard to guide them through easy changes they can make. Small things like cutting juice – which has many calories and sugar with little nutritional benefits – are places to start, she said. Other small changes, she said, include switching from whole to fat-free milk and getting rid of sodas. Westerholm also will tell parents about the importance of portion control, getting rid of snacks and incorporating more vegetables into meals.

Success is directly tied to how much effort families put forth in getting healthy.

“It really takes a motivated family,” she said. “The biggest key to people who have success is motivation.”

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY Obesity can cause immediate health problems, as well as a number of serious chronic health conditions. Some are more obvious, such as asthma or skin infections, while others

Obesity also can contribute to respiratory problems such as asthma, she said, and if that’s not controlled well, a child often is less likely to be physically active.

And overweight or obese children tend to miss more school, she said.

Along with physical problems, childhood obesity can affect their self-esteem, and they are more likely to be subjected to bullying, Henry said.

“Just think back to those grade school years, all those body shape changes with puberty,” Henry said. “When kids are overweight, they mature earlier, but their psychological development is not going to mature earlier.

So, now the physical body changes are happening before the brain can kind of reason that this is just a part of growing up.”

Licensed clinical professional counselor Joanna Robbins helps overweight teens with their self-esteem issues.

She is a lifestyle coach with the ProActive Kids program at the St. Charles Park District’s Pottawatomie Community Center, which is funded through Cadence Health.

“They doubt their physical abilities and think they’re not pretty or good-looking,” Robbins said.

Robbins’ advice to parents of overweight or obese children would be to actively participate in their child’s fitness program.

“Don’t make it the kids’ problem,” she said. “Make it a family affair. If they’re doing push-ups and sit-ups, get down on the ground and do them with them.”

And parents also can help in boosting their child’s self-esteem by reminding their children what they are good at.

“Society seems to put a lot of weight on our appearance and our physical looks,” she said. “If their kids are doing well academically and socially, parents still need to kind of reinforce those and that their looks are not the only defining

The board voted in open session after a closed meeting late Monday.

School officials would not return messages seeking comment, but referred questions to attorney James Petrunga-

ro. Petrungaro said the settlement still is in the process and is intended to resolve the lawsuits between the board and Pennington.

“Once it is settled, both cases will be withdrawn,” Petrungaro said. “It has not been completely finalized.”

Petrungaro said he expected the settlement agreement to be completed in the next week.

Neither Pennington nor her attorney returned messages seeking comment.

The district sued Pennington in 2011, seeking more than $100,000 in damages from her on behalf of two of its assistant superintendents as well as the district.

The lawsuit charged that Pennington tape-recorded meetings despite being told not to.

In February, Kane County Circuit Court Judge David Akemann dismissed the district’s case, saying the state’s eavesdropping law is unconstitutional. Akemann’s rul-

ing did not allow the district to file another charge on the same claim.

Pennington sued the district in federal court, alleging age and gender discrimination as they tried to intimidate her from pursuing discrimination complaints. Her complaint sought $75,000 in damages, according to court records Pennington was principal at Heartland Elementary School for the 2008-09 school year. She was reassigned as coordinator of special projects

for the district for the 2009-10 school year, then terminated in June 2010, according to the lawsuit.

Petrungaro said her claims were “patently false.”

In 2011, a federal judge ruled in favor of the district’s motion to dismiss her lawsuit, but gave Pennington leave to file an amended complaint. As the case continued, court records show both sides had agreed to a settlement “in principle.” A status hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18.

Sandy Gould believes her son, Jason, would have been thrilled that a fundraiser in his honor, Jason’s Hogfan Party, is in its fifth year supporting leukemia and lymphoma research.

“This is exactly what he would be doing,” she said.

Jason Gould, who grew up in Elburn, died in 2006 at age 36 after developing a viral complication from a bone marrow transplant he needed to survive a second bout of leukemia.

He was arranging a fundraiser for survivors when he died, his mother said.

Since 2009, the nonprofit organization created in his name – Friends of Jason Gould – has hosted Jason’s Hogfan Party as a way to raise money for medical research. About $100,000 has been raised so far, Sandy Gould said.

This year, the event is set for 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. Charles Moose Lodge on Route 38, just west of Randall Road in St. Charles.

The cost is $25 for adults, $10 for children 7 to 17 and free for ages 6 and younger.

Three area students named as National Merit semifinalists KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Three St. Charles School District 303 students have been named as National Merit semifinalists, according to a district news release.

The semifinalists are Hannah Larry and Alexander Park of St. Charles East High School and Caroline Blassick of St. Charles North High School. They are among 16,000 students selected for the honor nationwide.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955.

The next phase of the National Merit Scholarship Program happens in February, when the finalists are notified.

Water tower painting to run through October GENEVA – Painting on the city of Geneva’s Kirk Road water tower was scheduled to start this week, and it is to be completed in late October.

The water tower at 2093 S. Kirk Road, Geneva, will be emptied before being painted, which could produce rusty water for nearby property owners.

Anyone experiencing rusty water should call the city’s water department at 630-2321551 so crews can flush the water main.

There should be no other disruptions to the water service as part of the painting project.

Does ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ mean the end of Hollywood?

By CHARLES YU Bloomberg News There’s a good chance you’ve heard that “Grand Theft Auto V,” the latest installment of the storied video game franchise, took in over $1 billion in its first week. That’s more than any movie released this year, with the exception of “Iron Man 3” (which happens to be the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time).

At this rate, “GTA V” could be a nontrivial contributor to the U.S. gross domestic product. It’s a cultural event. Even Apple should be impressed.

It’s not a stretch to think that the people who didn’t go to the movies this summer might have said, “You know what, I’m skipping a few and using the cash for a different

kind of blockbuster.”

In that case, the most interesting number to keep in mind may be 100 – the approximate number of hours of gameplay that “GTA V” reportedly offers. For those diligent and conscientious enough to explore all the side quests, excursions and games-withinthe-game, it provides weeks of entertainment.

That makes the $60 retail price a bargain – 100 hours of gameplay at $0.60 an hour.

Compare that with the price of admission to a movie, even a two-and-a-half hour megaproduction. The other advantage for video games – driving the usage cost down even further – is that buyers get to keep the game.

So, could the multiple box office disappointments last summer reflect the beginning of a shift that goes well be-

yond blockbuster fatigue?

There’s little reason to think that movies and video games couldn’t continue to co-exist. But if audiences are becoming overly familiar with Hollywood’s version of the three-act-structure and if games continue to grow as a form of narrative entertainment, it’s tantalizing to think that the next few years or decades might bring some more serious attempts at experimentation and cross-pollination.

It’s already been tried.

Most of the results, however, have been marketing masquerading as “interactive storytelling.”

That’s where a game such as “GTA V” breaks through.

It’s tempting to think of it as an open-ended movie – it’s written and directed by storytellers skilled in the cinemat-

ic form and produced by an expert group of visual designers. In that sense it feels like a big movie production.

Open world games have come a long way in a short time, but as impressive as they are, they’re still operated on rails – theme-park rides rather than free-driving cars. “GTA V” points the way to games with a narrated openness in which players wouldn’t be presented with options so much as they would have tools to model their experience. Giving players the ability to create their own stories within the connected world of a larger story creates a natural, social evolution within the system.

If anyone is going to invent a new form of entertainment from this model, she’s probably 15 years old right now, unbound by the

conventions and assumptions of received forms. She’s growing up in a world in which a significant number of her interactions with other people are online (for better or worse). She makes calls on her computer and surfs the Web on her television. She makes no distinction between screens, small or large.

Maybe she’ll be the first auteur of this new kind of entertainment – an environment with infinite horizons.

She may imagine a platform where players are both the creator and the narrator, able to write the game as they play through it. Perhaps she’ll create the first Great American Possibility Space.

To the Editor: A nation’s behavior is similar to that of a person. The seven deadly sins (pride, greed, gluttony, sloth, lust, envy and wrath) apply to an individual as well as his country.

It appears our tendency to enter warfare is usually due to our inability to avoid most of the deadly sins, particularly pride.

President Eisenhower warned us to avoid the perils of embracing the military-industrial complex of our nation. Weapons of war are coveted by the military, and industry gladly produces them.

Our finer instincts should tell us to beware of Syria.

New equestrian center hosts open house show

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com VIRGIL TOWNSHIP – The Monte Cristo Equestrian Center will host a grand opening celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The sprawling 375-acre center at 45W050 Beith Road in Virgil Township, near Maple Park, just opened two months ago and plans a blockbuster horse show, owner Enrique Martinez said.

“We are going to have a horse show performance of musicians and horses dancing and playing live music,” Martinez said. “We will have a petting zoo and jousting

demonstration.”

The cost to attend is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 15.

The equestrian center was vacant for years before Martinez obtained it and began restoration. He said his equestrian center shares 190 acres with nearby Promise Equestrian Center of mostly pasture and crops such as hay, Martinez said.

“We have a theater with horses every month. We have training, boarding and lessons,” Martinez said. “We will have therapy horses for children with disabilities and a … wounded warrior program to rehabilitate soldiers.”

Rupert Isaacson, horse trainer and author of “The Horse Boy Method,” will do a presentation on the healing power of horses.

He also will offer a twoday workshop at the center, six hours each day, Sunday and Monday. The cost is $700 per participant or $375 for attending without riding a horse. The cost includes refreshments and lunch.

Isaacson developed a way to work with special-needs individuals – the Horse Boy Method – based on his own experience with his son who has autism.

Among the horses to be featured are Friesian horses originally from Holland.

“These horses are not like any other horse,” Martinez said. “They are drop-dead gorgeous.”

Martinez is a first-generation immigrant whose father was born in Mexico but raised in California, and both his grandfathers were from Spain.

“They migrated to Mexico during the Franco war during World War II,” said Martinez, referring to the Spanish Civil War and dictator Francisco Franco. “They escaped. The Mexican gov-

ernment gave them asylum.”

It was the family business all their lives, he said, including breeding, competitions, training and shows.

Martinez said the family moved to Illinois two years ago intending to open an equestrian center and school and share the equine cultures of other nations. The family now lives in Pingree Grove, he said.

“We used to do training and shows for national television in Mexico, but it became too hard to live there,” Martinez said. “The situation was out of everybody’s hands there, very dangerous. We shut everything down and canceled all our contracts.”

‘Just kind of ’ winners

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva right-side hitter Ally Barrett began many of her answers with the aw-shucks opener “I just kind of …” after Tuesday’s match against St. Charles North.

Like outside hitter Grace Loberg, Barrett is a freshman, a fact the Vikings’ full-throat student section proudly points out whenever the opportunity arises.

Barrett shrugged about extending her 6-foot-2 frame to “just kind of” stand up to North’s attack. Ditto for the way she “just kind of” elevated to slam an errant North Stars pass to the ground for the final point.

With that, Geneva capped a 25-22, 17-25, 26-24 victory that firmly placed the team in the thick of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division race. No “just kind of” about that one.

“Afterward, everyone just ran onto the court and everyone was screaming,” Barrett said. “It was a great thing.”

Geneva (14-5, 2-1 UEC River) avoided a repeat of last week against Batavia, when the Vikings won the first game but lost the match in three.

North (15-3, 2-1), which suddenly finds itself on a three-match losing streak after a stellar start, did not lead until grabbing an 11-10 advantage in Game 2.

North Stars coach Lindsey Hawkins neglected to pass on what she viewed as the difference.

“Just ball control. We had a lot of mishandling balls and communication errors, which is unlike us,” Hawkins said. “And I just think we didn’t come out as fired up as they could have and should have been. We put ourselves in that situation, and they took advantage of it and really got the momentum going.”

Still, the North Stars were in position to remain unbeaten in league play, leading as late as 19-18 in

After Claire Anderson and Sophia DuVall’s block of Loberg drew North to within 24-23 and a would-be block of Krage went out of bounds, the Vikings called timeout.

A team that has just three seniors – including Courtney Caruso (18 assists) and hobbled middle Taylor Marmitt (foot) – erupted shortly after its young guns starred again.

Friends and teammates since fourth grade, Loberg and Barrett collected the final two kills of the night.

“I feel like me and Grace are really holding our own,” Barrett said.

Vikings coach KC Johnsen still calls this group “terribly young,” but knows that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Citing the crowd and,

Jess Wicinski bested last week’s sprawling effort against Batavia with 49 digs, Megan Cameron dished 14 assists and Hannah Lanasa had seven kills.

All three are juniors, and eager to watch Barrett, Loberg and company grow.

“It helps us a little bit, I guess, because we’re getting

used to each other and we’ll be the same team next year,” Lanasa said. “We’re only losing a couple seniors, so we’re hoping it’ll help us next year, too.”

Of course, she adds, it’s still September, and the Vikings have eyes on big accomplishments in 2013, too.

On Tuesday, they just kind of jumped into the conference mix. It’s a fun place to start.

ST. CHARLES – Tuesday was senior day for the St. Charles North girls golf team at Pottawatomie Golf Course, so naturally, a pair of freshman led the North Stars to a 171-192 victory against crosstown rival St. Charles East.

Gianna Furrie fired a 1-over-par 38 and classmate Katie Lillie carded a 43 for North (11-1 overall, 9-1 UEC River).

“I was playing really well altogether,” Furrie said.

“I was making a lot of putts and my drives w e r e r e a l l y Gianna Furrie good.”

Beginning her round on the par-5 third hole, Furrie started fast with a birdie.

“I hit my first shot and Darby Crane it kind of went just over the fairway a little bit into the rough,” she said.

“Then I hit my second shot to like nine feet [of the pin].

Then [my putt for an eagle] lipped out.”

Carly Hudon and Gabrielle Spinazze each added a 45 to North’s winning total.

“I felt like the scores were a little bit higher than what we’ve been averaging this year,” North coach Chris Patrick said. “Gianna shot a 38.

She’s been pretty steady all year long. My seniors were a little bit higher today. I don’t know if it was just the excite-

ment of senior day and their last match at Pottawatomie.”

Senior Darby Crane posted the lowest score for the Saints (3-9, 3-7) with a 42.

“I thought it was pretty good,” Crane said of her round. “I felt comfortable with it. It’s been better than I’ve been playing this past week because I changed my swing and then I changed it back, so I’ve just been in the transition process, trying to get back to my regular swing.”

Crane is one of two Saints seniors.

“I think our team’s doing pretty good, considering how young we are,” she said.

“We’re progressing. We’ve progressed a lot since the beginning of the season.”

With a 49, Reagan Stanton was the only other Saint to break 50.

East coach Rod Osborne noted that 12 of the 14 players on the varsity roster are either freshmen or sophomores.

“We’re still young,” he said. “We have pretty good basic swings, but we need to work on the short game a lot – on how to get it on the green sooner and take less putts. … These kids have had very little, if any, tournament experience in the past and started playing last summer or the summer before, most of them. So it’s going to take awhile, but they’re great kids who seem to be excited about learning and getting better.”

The two teams will see each other again Saturday in the Naperville North Invitational at Naperbrook Golf Course.

Just all week in practice, we had been working on the types of routes they were running. Going into the game, we were prepared for them to pass a lot and were prepared for a lot of what they threw at us, and being in position worked out for us. … We just had worked a lot of them passing out of a very spread, trips-looking field.

The St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week snagged two interceptions and a touchdown catch, and will look to be equally effective when the 4-0 Cadets host four-time defending 5A state champion Montini this week. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley recently caught up with Sevenich. An edited transcript of the conversation follows:

GIRLS TENNIS: ST. CHARLES EAST 4, BATAVIA 3

There’s a little bit of a similarity. Montini likes to run trips, too. From what I’ve been watching and seeing on film and just from the past few years we’ve played them, they’ve passed a lot, so we’ll have to be ready Friday night for another big passing attack.

The team was upbeat before the season. How has this start boosted morale?

Now that we’re 4-0, everyone’s really excited about where we’re looking to be. ... Especially with Montini being our homecoming week, it’s upped the morale even more. We have the chance to beat them at our home field. This is the first time the seniors have been able to play them at our home field, and everyone is excited to have the chance to take down the top dog at our home field.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be?

I’d either go to two of my captains, Zach Siwiec or Joe Talbot. Both of them are good guys and real friendly. They’re both really smart, too.

BATAVIA – St. Charles East edged Batavia, 4-3, in a pivotal Upstate Eight Conference girls tennis dual Tuesday behind a tight win from Jamie Youngberg and Emily Russell at No. 3 doubles.

With the dual tied at 3-all, all eyes were on Youngberg and Russell’s match against Caroline Lantz and Julianne Robinson of Batavia. The Saints’ duo rallied to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win, as East exhaled.

“I knew it was going to be either 3-4 or 4-3,” Saints coach Sena Drawer said.

“We decided with the girls on the bus that we needed to win at least one of the singles matches. We had to win three doubles matches. Once [Youngberg and Russell] got that second set, you could see that momentum swing.

It was fun to watch. Once they got a little more determined, they were like, ‘We’re doing this.’ ” For Youngberg and Russell, the less they knew down the stretch, the better.

“We had no idea it was for the team win. I’m really glad they didn’t tell us,” Russell said. “When we found out at the end, it made it all worth it. It made us so glad that we could help our team out.”

Added Youngberg: “That was nerve-racking, but really fun at the same time. It’s always fun to play with a purpose. We both didn’t know this was the deciding match.”

St. Charles East improved to 7-1 (4-0 UEC River). Batavia, the threetime defending conference champion, fell to 3-3 and 1-2.

For the Bulldogs, the meet was too similar to the Geneva dual meet last week, where it came down to what happened at No. 2 doubles.

“I’m not happy with the way it turned out. I think we’re a better team than that,” Batavia coach Brad Nelson said. “The way we’ve lost is what I don’t like. It’s a repeat of Geneva. We lose two deciding matches when we have the lead late and give up the lead. Too many mistakes.”

At No. 1 singles, Nora McClure of Batavia defeated Sarah Church of East, 6-2, 6-2.

“I knew it was going to be a long one with long points. Today, I was just trying to be as consistent as possible and get every ball back that I could,” McClure said.

At second singles, East’s Jaci Spoerl beat Annie Maren of Batavia, 6-2, 6-1.

Megan Garvin of Batavia won third singles

against Erin Sullivan, 6-2, 6-1.

At first doubles, Batavia’s Jenny Mizikar and Amelia Cogan defeated Haydyn Jones and Kelsie Roberton, 6-2, 6-0. Mizikar earned her 113th career win, and has her sights set on friend Hannah Potter, the program’s all-time victories leader with a record of 115-30.

“I believe I can do it either way, so I want to extend it even more. One match at a time,” Mizikar said.

East’s second doubles team of Alexa Huskisson and Carly Huskisson beat Sydnee Unterberg and Brook LeFevre of Batavia, 6-2, 6-3.

“We were really excited to win because we knew Batavia was going to be a tough match so we just tried to do our best,” Carly Huskisson said.

At fourth doubles, Katie Downing and Kelly Rinker of East defeated Dana Krella and Ashlyn Turner of Batavia, 6-2, 6-4.

Each result set up the drama on the No. 3 doubles court.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” Drawer said. “This is a huge win for us. Every one of them got out there. They knew we had a mission. They have really wanted this.

They want to really win conference this year.”

Medalist Luke Hoss (39) and Joe Fritz (41) paced the Cadets. Lately, Marmion’s fourth or fifth scorer Hoss emerged with a big day to boost the Cadets at St. Charles Country Club.

Grant Gosden (41) and Zack Spear (42) led the Warriors.

“Playing at St. Charles Country Club, it’s an excellent venue,” Wheaton Academy coach Scott Broman said. “We had a wonderful time playing out there. We learned a lot from this match, and we’re just going to move on from there.”

But on Tuesday against Kaneland, Nore didn’t see the same spark out of his team as Sycamore let a six-point lead slip away late in the first game and then couldn’t recover in the second game of a 25-23, 2514 loss to the Knights.

“We were pretty much in control the entire time and they made a little bit of a push and for whatever reason, unlike we did this past Thursday ... there was something missing tonight,” Nore said.

Sycamore jumped out to an early lead as the Spartans played clean and took advan-

tage of some service and hitting errors from Kaneland.

A kill from Mattie Hayes off the set from Kendra Larson put the Spartans (5-6, 1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) up 15-9 and Mallory Wolf followed with an ace to extend Sycamore’s lead to seven. “[Nore] would rather have us be aggressive in our serving than miss it in the net,” senior Emily Young said of Sycamore’s serving. “Rather have it float way over to the back wall just so we’re being aggressive.”

Down 19-13, Kaneland rallied to win 12 of the final 16 points and sealed a win in game one off a kill from Ellie Dunn.

“I think we waited to be motivated,” Kaneland coach Kerri McCastland. “I think all aspects of the team game, serves, defense, hitting, I think it all kind of came on.”

Kaneland (8-8, 2-1) continued its stellar play into the second game. The Knights’ defense picked up and Kaneland won five consecutive points to take a 17-8 lead before closing the match out in two games.

Hayes led the Spartans with five kills while Young had four kills and also recorded an ace.

Dunn had six kills and three blocks for the Knights.

Riley Hannula also finished with six kills.

The Spartans travel to Morris on Thursday looking to get back to .500 in the conference while Kaneland hosts Rochelle. “[Kaneland] played extremely well. They had a really rough start then they started getting a few kills and they hung there and they kept fighting,” Nore said. “They pretty much dominated us in the second game.”

GIRLS TENNIS Kaneland 4, Morris 1: At Maple Park, Kaneland swept doubles play to improve to 7-2 in duals. Mallory Dugan and Kaylee Shoaff were 6-2, 6-1 winners in the No. 3 slot.

GIRLS SWIMMING St. Charles North 97, Wheaton Co-op 89: At St. Charles, North’s Kristen Kowaleski was part of two winning relay swims – 1:55:59 in the 200-yard medley relay and 1:42:54 in the 200 freestyle relay – in addition to having a strong individual night. Kowaleski’s other victories included a time of 25.59 in the 50 freestyle.

Heading in the right direction With just more than a week to go until the Oct. 2 Northern Illinois Big 12 meet at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club in La Salle, Kaneland has happily welcomed a reinforcement bent on helping the Knights to their fourth straight conference title.

Freshman Jake Hed, promoted to the varsity earlier this month, has fit right in among veterans such as Brody Kuhar and Matt Yonkovich. His latest breakthrough: shooting a 2-under-par 34 to share medalist honors with Kuhar in the Knights’ victory Thursday against Jacobs.

“Obviously, any time a freshman gets bumped up, he’ll take a little flak. but it’s all in good fun,” Knights coach Mark Meyer said. “For the most part, they’ve really been helping him out and being a good teammate to him.”

Kaneland hopes Hed’s learning curve remains on an accelerated course next week. Two of the Knights’ scorers from the 2012 conference meet at Senica’s Oak Ridge graduated.

“Only two of our varsity guys played there last year, but … I think it’s a fair course and it’s a course our guys can play well, and there’s some good scoring opportunities and some holes where you’ve got to be smart,” Meyer said.

“Having played it for the last few years in conference, I think they’ve got some confidence going to that course.”

The same goes for Hed, regardless of whether he’s seen the layout or not.

“That was an important round for us,” Prentiss said.

“The other three that counted are kind of our big three.

Anthony really came through for us.”

North, 3-1 in Upstate Eight River play through Tuesday, still is not abandoning its focus on duals, though. There still are several key ones as

the Oct. 2 conference meet at St. Andrews approaches, beginning with today’s quad against St. Charles East, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley.

“We’re coming down to the wire, getting ready for the conference tournament with some big matches,” Prentiss said “It’s a big week in the River Division.”

The Bears improved to 3-0 this weekend with a win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shaw Media’s Hub Arkush and Tom Musick discuss:

Musick: Hub, more than 12 million of us watched the Bears-Steelers game from our couches and beanbag chairs and exercise balls and wherever else people sit. But you were down on the sidelines at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field for the game. What’s that experience like? Do you ever worry that you might be stampeded?

Arkush: Gee Tom, funny you should ask. Apparently both Laura Oakman and Pam Oliver of Fox have had some close calls recently, but I’ve found if you’re paying attention it’s actually a pretty safe place to be. To be clear, both Pam and Laura are pros who are good at what they do, and stuff happens, but it’s pretty hard to get in harm’s way when you’re watching what’s going on, on the field.

Of course as more NFL teams continue to put more and more sponsors and fans on the field in search of the almighty greenbacks, there are bigger traffic jams down there all the time.

Musick: You just gave me an idea to open up a nightclub and call it The Sideline.

Everybody would want to be there. I’m picturing a long, narrow building with the bar

on the opposite side of the white line. Anyway, I know Roger Goodell might try to taze you if you spill off-therecord beans, but what’s one thing you have learned as a sideline reporter that everyday, TV-watching football fans might not know?

Arkush: I’m sure this will shock our audience, but there are some gentlemen down there with horribly foul mouths who, for reasons I’ll never understand, are constantly yelling at people on the other side of the field to go do things that are clearly anatomically impossible. What’s up with that?

Also, many players and coaches spend more time surfing the stands – for whatever it is they may be looking for – than they do watching the game, a number of coaches are really funny when they get mad, and placekickers and punters are some of the most polite people in the world.

From a football perspective, there is a lot more coaching and a lot less motivating than you’d expect. Coaches’ conversations with players are mainly about the photos being taken during the game and adjusting the X’s and O’s rather than trying to get guys to win one for the Gipper.

Musick: Hmm, I bet most players are busy scanning the stands to look for, um, their moms. Yeah, that’s it. Their moms. So, from your point

Head coaches such as the Bears’ Marc Trestman are so focused on the field that they rarely spend time talking to players on the sideline. of view on the sidelines, does it seem as if some teams are more organized and better prepared than others? I ask this because the Bears are playing the Detroit Lions this weekend. The Bears strike me as a pretty disciplined group.

The Lions, not so much.

Arkush: Actually, Tom, most NFL sidelines are organized and run putty much the same way. Players tend to sit or stand together in units when they come off the field.

Most of the starters will sit or head for the water or stationery bike when they come off and not really watch the game.

In today’s stadiums, you see a lot more guys watching on the jumbotrons from the bench, but after they’ve been off for a while, if the other unit is still out there, they’ll get up and watch the game live.

Reserves are always up on the sideline watching with the coaches when their unit is on the field, either hoping to get sent in or ready if they’re needed.

Head coaches rarely talk to players. That’s left to position coaches, with the boss usually laser-focused on the field.

Other than the fact that Marc Trestman rarely chang-

es facial expressions more than once a quarter, while Jim Schwartz is as animated as they come and liable to go off like a Roman candle at any moment, you won’t see a lot of differences in the two sidelines this Sunday.

As for the guys looking for their moms in the stands, ah huh. Mom and any of the local talent that may be in the immediate vicinity.

Musick: Yes, exactly. Do you think the Lions would mind if we sent some pizzas to their sideline this weekend? I think Nate Burleson could use a get-well-soon gift.

Huskies ‘excited’ to play at Northwestern in ’14

By DAILY CHRONICLE STAFF sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois will face Northwestern for the first time since 2005 when the teams play in Evanston on Sept. 6, 2014, officials from both schools announced Tuesday morning.

NIU athletic director Sean Frazier was thrilled to add the Wildcats to NIU’s schedule.

“I am extremely excited to add Northwestern, a high-quality opponent, to our 2014 foot-

ball non-conference schedule,” Frazier said in a news release.

“Declining attendance at college football games is a national trend and scheduling has been identified as a prime factor in the decline. I am continually evaluating our future football schedules, and the addition of this game is just the first announcement regarding concerted efforts to improve our football schedule, connect with our alumni base in the Chicago region, increase ex-

posure for NIU and promote the NIU Huskies as a national brand.”

Northwestern has an NIU connection in athletic director Jim Phillips, who was NIU’s AD from 2004 to 2008.The Wildcats are 6-0-1 all-time against the Huskies, and all the games have been in Evanston.

In the team’s last meeting back in 2005, NIU scored with six seconds left, only to lose 3837 when quarterback Phil Horvath’s two-point conversion

pass fell incomplete. On Sept.

29, 1990, Northwestern broke a 14-game losing streak with a 24-7 win over the Huskies.

NIU coach Rod Carey said the game is good for everyone involved.

“Really excited and glad that they got that worked out.

We’re excited about the game,” Carey said during Tuesday’s news conference at the Yordon Center. “I think it’s going to be great for our fans, for their fans, for the Chicagoland area.

I just think that it’s a game that is a real positive all the way around for us.”

NIU is offering a deal on tickets for the NIU-Northwestern game. Anyone who orders season tickets for the 2014 season between “early 2014 when season ticket renewals are mailed to April 30, 2014,” the school said in a release, will have the right to request game tickets. After that, NIU’s allotment will be sold on a firstcome, first-served basis.

‘Rush’ delivers expected visceral jolts with surprising endearment

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post The last time director Ron Howard and screenwriter Peter Morgan worked together, it was on “Frost/Nixon,” a crafty and illuminating cat-and-mouse psychological thriller that pitted interviewer David Frost against still-roaring lion in winter Richard Nixon.

With “Rush,” the filmmakers are in harness again, and again their fascination lies with two strong-willed men of diametrically opposed temperaments.

Ostensibly about the rivalry between Formula One race car drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), which reached its zenith in the explosively dramatic 1976 season, “Rush” is also an old-fashioned morality tale, an iteration of the Ant and the Grasshopper with fast cars, spectacular smash-ups, fierce competition and the kind of cutthroat, grudgingly respectful one-upsmanship of which so many classic male-bonding myths are made.

Beginning in 1976, when Hunt and Lauda played their own cat-and-mouse game through a series of Grand Prix races, “Rush” flashes back six years earlier, when Hunt – a handsome blond playboy – first meets Lauda, a serious-minded Austrian with an unfortunate overbite and zero sense of humor. Both sons of prosperous bourgeois families, their similarities end there, with Hunt largely driving on instinct and adrenaline and Lauda taking a far more technical, analytical approach. Portrayed as a hot-headed, undisciplined risk-taker on the track and a legendary swordsman in bed, Hunt was like a shaggy 007 of the car-racing world; at one point, someone actually introduces him as “Hunt, James Hunt.”

While Hunt lives it up, dining on oysters and Champagne at races and capitalizing on the “aphrodisiacal effects of being close to death,” as he puts it at one point, Lauda keeps his head down, his humanity finally peeking through when he takes his future wife (and two awe-struck fans) on a breakneck joyride through the Italian country-

Morgan’s script can be faulted for telling rather than showing too often, as the men deliver a few too many pat speeches in which they spell out What Our Rivalry Means. But Howard directs “Rush” with speed and jangly, jarring verve, bringing the races themselves to white-knuckled life and allowing the men’s stories to play out with only slightly predictable reversals, upsets and, inevitably, those hard lessons learned.

The most harrowing of those sequences happens during the German Grand Prix in 1976, when Lauda is horribly burned, at which point the film slows down to show his excruciating recovery in literally painstaking detail.

The episode not only tempers Lauda’s resolve, but leaves him even less handsome than Britain’s perennial Golden Boy, who, even when he’s bingeing on alcohol and pot, seems destined for a life free of ordinary consequences.

As much escapist fun as “Rush” is as an adrenaline-juiced car-race movie, it’s most interesting as a rare depiction of male vanity, how physical attractiveness informs self-worth and potency, and the role beauty – so often the sole purview of women on screen – plays in men’s relationships and personal insecurities.

It’s not surprising that Lauda earns the audience’s allegiance as the plain-look-

ing, hard-working underdog of the pair; the twist is how much sympathy Hunt earns as the pretty one, who keeps his anxieties hidden beneath glib bonhomie and quiet bouts of pre-race nausea.

That viewers care at all about men who are joyless, bossy and arrogant on one hand and vain, shallow and arrogant on the other can be directly attributed to Bruhl and Hemsworth, each of whom imbues his character with enough personal charm to keep the audience invested as their cars keep going round and round.

Howard, cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle and editor Daniel P. Hanley deserve credit as well, for creating a crisp, well-told account that succeeds as a workaday biopic, glamorous period piece and portrayal of sports culture that seems quaintly scruffy seen from an era taken over by steroids, TV-ready narratives and endorsement deals.

Considering the subject matter, “Rush” delivers the expected visceral jolts; what’s surprising is how endearing it is, even when its two protagonists are behaving like little more than boys with very fast toys.

• “Rush” received three stars. The film runs 123 minutes and is rated R for sexual content, nudity, profanity, some disturbing images and brief drug use.

Out of control sister using drugs needs help Dear Abby: I’m 21, and my 16-year-old sister is out of control.

She told me she smokes marijuana, drinks alcohol, abuses painkillers and recently mentioned she does coke.

Abby, she is beautiful, and I don’t want to see her do this to herself. She’s living with me about an hour away from my parents because Dad is an alcoholic and he abuses our mother. I brought my sister here to get her away from all that because I know what it was like growing up there.

I’m having trouble giving her advice to stay away from those things because I did them, and I feel like a hypocrite. My parents can’t get through to her, either.

Chronic stress causes cells to age prematurely Dear Doctor K: For years I’ve heard that chronic stress is bad for your health, but recently I heard something that made me take this seriously: Stress causes our cells to age faster. Is this really true?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you’re talking about research showing that stress affects the telomeres.

These structures are a part of every cell in our body. And if that’s what you’re asking about, it really is true. In fact, it’s part of a discovery so important that it was honored with the Nobel Prize.

The telomeres are the ends of the chromosomes, the structures inside each cell that contain the genes. Over time, the telomeres get shorter. When they get short enough, the cell dies.

What does this have to do with stress? Chronic stress leads to shorter telomeres. The first study that showed this was published in 2004. The senior author, professor Elizabeth Blackburn of the University of California-San Francisco, was one of the scientists awarded the Nobel Prize. The study included mothers caring for chronically ill children. The women under the greatest stress had the shortest telomeres. It was as if their cells were 10 years older

Since that study, many other studies of people of all ages, in different kinds of stressful situations, have come to the same conclusion: Chronic stress leads to shorter telomeres – to cells that are “older” and closer to the end of their lives.

Most of these studies have been done in older adults, but some have been done in younger adults. For example, young pregnant women exposed to major stress during their pregnancies (such as from the illness or death of a parent) have shorter telomeres than young pregnant women with relatively stress-free pregnancies.

This even is true in children.

Children exposed to lots of violence appear to develop shorter telomeres. Chronic stress in childhood, like physical abuse, can lead to shorter telomeres that remain short into middle age.

Professor Blackburn puts it this way: “Telomeres powerfully

quantify life’s insults.”

What does having “older” cells have to do with health? A growing number of studies show that people with shorter telomeres are much more likely to develop certain types of cancers, heart disease and dementia. In fact, some experts are predicting that we will soon be routinely measuring the length of a person’s telomeres as part of assessing his or her health.

Could stress-reduction techniques slow cellular aging? In a review article published last year in the scientific journal Nature, professor Blackburn says the answer probably is “yes.” She describes preliminary studies of stress reduction combined with increased physical activity and dietary changes. It appears from these studies that the telomere shortening may be slowed.

The story of telomeres and cell aging is a prime example of how scientists interested in how our cells work can make unexpected discoveries about what makes us sick – and how to prevent it.

Teen gets annoyed by younger brothers Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and have two younger brothers, ages 7 and 9. These two boys are brats and do everything possible to upset me.

They get their kicks out of making me angry.

They spy on me, lie about me, laugh at me, steal from me, squeal to my parents about me, read my diary and pester my friends, who despise them.

Why are little brothers always brats? My grandmother thinks these two little devils are cute little angels.

Dear Nameless: Younger brothers aren’t always brats, and siblings anywhere in the birth order are capable of filling that role. What can you do about it? Screaming at these “little angels” won’t do the trick, and punishing them is, at best, a temporary solution.

Your brothers pester you because they enjoy seeing you get upset and angry. Your best recourse is to refuse to play your part. Don’t become overwrought by their little games!

I realize this will be difficult, but believe me, if you ignore them, they will soon realize that pestering you is a waste of time. My guess is that it will take about a week.

When they get it into their heads that you won’t be the “goat” any more, they’ll have to find someone else to bother. Let’s hope it’s not Grandmother. But maybe it might be better Grandmother than you. Grandmothers know how to successfully take care of little brats.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a ninth-grader, and I really enjoy being in

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace high school. I go to all the athletic events, but I don’t attend the school dances after home football games because our church does not condone dancing of any kind. One of my good friends attends some of the dances and has asked me to join him. I told him that I’m not allowed to dance.

He then said that he doesn’t dance either; instead, he hangs around talking to kids about the game and school stuff.

I’d really like to go to one to see what it is all about, but I know my parents would say no. If the gathering was called an after-game hangout, I probably would be allowed to attend. Any help would be nice! – Albert, Phoenix, Ariz.

Dear Albert: I agree that very few students actually dance at after-game campus “dances.” Your friend was right. These dances turn out to be supervised “gab sessions.”

Have your parents ask for permission to observe one of these events for a few minutes so they can evaluate whether or not it’s proper for you to attend. This should not cause a problem. Most principals will allow parents to have a peek at school functions.

In today’s deal, South did not draw the logical conclusion from the auction. Look at his hand. He dealt and opened one spade, West overcalled one no-trump (strong), and North responded three diamonds. After East passed, what should South have done?

West’s choice of overcall would not have appealed to everyone. It described the hand strength, but hid her five-card major.

North’s three-diamond response described her hand well – a good long suit and nothing else.

(With a strong hand, she would have doubled for penalty.) South had no extra values and no good fit for diamonds, so he should have passed, reaching a contract that could have been made.

Three no-trump, though, had no chance. West, thinking that her partner had no points, led the heart two, which was theoretically fourth-highest. She purposely falsecarded.

South, thinking West had the spade ace and queen, won with his heart jack, played a diamond to dummy’s jack, and led a club to his queen. West won and continued with the heart nine.

South won and played another diamond, but West took her ace and cashed her three heart tricks.

East discouraged in spades, and South also pitched two spades.

Then West accurately exited with a club, leaving South stuck in his hand. The contract went down four.

The Rachel’s Challenge program will be presented throughout the day Tuesday at the school, 1601 Esker Drive in Sugar Grove. There will be two presentations for students during the school day – at 7:30 a.m. for sixthand seventh-graders and at 9 a.m. for eighth-graders.

At 6 p.m., there will be a presentation for the Kaneland community.

Students are encouraged to attend with their parents.

Rachel’s Challenge is named for Rachel Joy Scott, who died in 1999 in the Columbine High School shootings. According to www.rachelschallenge.org, it is based on the writings and life of Scott, 17, who was the first student killed at the shootings. The program was

Bryan Zwemke, the middle school principal, said the program is supportive of the school’s goals – kindness, ownership, respect and trust, a concept known as KORT. “We have wanted to focus on social-emotional learning, and we thought that this program would meet the needs of that,” Zwemke said. “It focuses on respect and centers around five challenges.”

The challenges: • Dream big and believe in yourself.

• Be kind to others.

• Practice positive gossip.

• Show appreciation.

• Be the answer.

In a letter to Harter par-

ents, Zwemke encouraged parents to attend the community session with their children.

“Our goal is that at the end of this assembly, students have a renewed hope that their life matters and they have a purpose,” Zwemke wrote in the letter.

“They appreciate the importance of being kind to others for the positive impact it has on both the recipient and on themselves. Participants understand that words have the power to hurt and the power to heal and are inspired to use their words in a positive way.”

Zwemke said officials visited other schools that have had the program presented and “they felt this was a good impact for their students.”

The program has support from P.E.A.K. For Kids, which stands for promoting enrichment and kindness. It is the organization that hosts

the Kindness Campaign in the Kaneland community.

Its founder, Renee Dee, said Rachel’s Challenge is “going to be a great complement to all of the other programs the school and other organizations are doing in the community. ... It will complement all of the efforts of the Kindness Campaign.”

That effort will be boosted next month, as Oct. 13 to 19 will be KiK Week, which stands for “kindness in Kaneland,” she said.

Dee said is important to spread a message to youths that being kind is an option.

“We’re trying to make it cool to be nice,” she said.

Education in Action International Dot Day On Monday, two 1st grade classes at McDole Elementary celebrated International Dot Day. International Dot Day is based around a book by Peter Reynolds called The Dot. It is designed to help you recognize your mark on the world. The goal is to get classes around the world to collaborate, create, connect and celebrate. The McDole 1st graders did exactly that. They spent their day collaborating and creating together using iPads to find dots around McDole and create artwork that is inspired by Peter Reynolds. Each class connected with parents and the community by posting an article on each of the class blogs. These blog posts highlight the students activities. We will also be using this activity as a way to practice commenting appropriately and productively on another person’s blog. We have partnered with a 1st grade class in Texas for this part of the celebrations. We were thrilled with our school and parent response to Dot Day and can’t wait to do it again next year!

At Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary School in Elburn, Illinois, Mr. Bob Barth’s 3rd grade class is learning about different communities and cultures from the social studies curriculum. One of the books read in this unit is Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say which is about a Japanese grandfather’s journey to California and back to Japan. Mr. Barth and Mrs. Henigan, the ESL teacher at Blackberry Creek, are providing mini lessons about the Japanese culture. Mrs. Henigan has contacted Mr. Nakane from the Chicago Futabakai Japanese School in Arlington Heights, Illinois about possible future cultural connections between both schools. A Japanese display was donated to Blackberry Creek by Laura McPhee, Eriko Kojima, Nehru Arunasalam, Masumi Nehru. Masumi Nehru attends the Chicago Futabakai Japanese School in Arlington Heights. We are excited about the learning the students in 3rd grade are doing and eager for the potential partnership to form between the two schools.
