Sun, art lures hundreds to Art in Your Eye

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Chris and Holly Miller didn’t wake up Sunday morning intending to bring their three young children to Batavia’s riverfront to admire the booths full of paintings, photographs, sculptures, carvings and more.

But by the time the Batavia family had finished their lunch at a nearby restaurant, the opportunity to soak in some natural and human-made beauty proved too strong a draw to pass up.

“This is a first for us, coming here,” Chris Miller said.

“But it’s a great chance to get out and take in some sunshine and a little culture, at the same time.”

Sunday, the Millers were among hundreds who stopped in at the Batavia Riverwalk for the city’s annual Art in Your Eye festival.

Organizers moved the event this year to mid-September to try a different scheduling option to escape the heat, humidity and stormy conditions typical of August, when

Hundreds of people visited Batavia’s Riverwalk on Sunday for the second day of the annual Art in Your Eye Festival. Festgoers took in artwork from dozens of artists from throughout the Chicago area. the event had been held in years past.

However, as in years past, the event again boasted dozens of artists from Kane County, the Chicago area and beyond, who turned out to exhibit and sell their works.

Inside Batavia City Hall, local artists displayed art works in a juried competition.

But the big draw, amid sunny fall weather conditions

over the festival’s two-day run proved to be the tented outdoor exhibits in the festival’s outdoor art fair.

Artists exhibited art produced using a range of techniques and media.

Batavia resident Ezra Siegel exhibited several of his abstract and myth-based paintings, drawing a steady stream of visitors and selling a few works.

This weekend marked the first time Siegel has exhibited in Batavia, as the Chicago native and world-traveled artist has typically missed Art in Your Eye in years past because of schedule conflicts.

He noted this year, thanks to the new date, he was able to attend and add his works to the collections on display He said he hopes events like Art in Your Eye can help Bat-

avia gain prominence within the regional artistic communities.

“There is a younger generation moving into this area, people who are fairly worldly, and sophisticated,” Siegel said. “I’m hoping Batavia gets put on the map for its community of artists, this fair and [local art studio] Water Street.”

The opportunity to peruse the artistic displays proved to be an attractive option for many Sunday, including Don and Kathy Adams of Aurora.

The couple said they enjoy visiting outdoor art shows, but had not been to Batavia’s before.

“We’re really enjoying this one so far,” Kathy Adams said.

“It seems larger, more spacious, and a lot less hectic.”

And Laura Shepp of Naperville and Rick Nolte of Bloomingdale stopped in at Art in Your Eye as they rode their bicycles north on the Fox River Trail from North Aurora.

“We just kind of ended up here,” Shepp said. “But we’re going to stay and check it out.

“It’s a beautiful day. Why not?”

No on Cetron purchase: ‘A huge, difficult decision’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When the Geneva Library Board voted unanimously Saturday not to proceed with a planned purchase of the 2.28 acre Ceron property, the decision ended a three-year effort to buy the site for a new library.

The board voted in July 2010 to buy the property at 7 Richards St. for $2 million.

That action followed library officials’ 10-year effort to buy the former Sixth Street School site for a new library building with parking.

The previous county board had approved the sale, but never followed through. The Kane County Regional Education Office currently is housed there.

Board president Esther Steel said voting no on the Cetron property was difficult.

“It was huge for the entire board,” Steel said. “This was a huge, difficult decision,

but the one thing about our board, they are all passionate about doing the right thing for the library district.”

Library trustee Robert Shiffler echoed Steel’s sentiments.

“I’m disappointed,” Shiffler said. “But I think we made the right decision. We have to take a look at what alternatives we have and start the process all over again.”

The effort to find a location and build a larger facility while remaining in the city’s downtown has been a longterm plan of library officials, as the current building at 127 James St. is not big enough to serve the district’s 31,000 residents, Steel said.

“We’re not really providing services in our building that we should be,” Steel said.

“We are really falling down at this point on things we should be doing for our community.

It’s really frustrating.”

If the Cetron purchase had gone through, voter support

for a referendum to build a new facility would have been required, she said.

Trustees voted 6-0 not to proceed with the Cetron purchase following a 90-minute closed special meeting Saturday. Trustee Travis Ketterman was out of town and not available to attend, Steel said.

The library hired Aires Consulting of Batavia for a site assessment of environmental conditions that began in April. If clean-up was deemed to be too expensive, library trustees could stop the sale – which they did.

Steel said attorneys advised library officials they could not release the environmental report, nor provide specifics as to what was found at the Cetron site. The building had been used in the manufacture of light bulbs in the past, but was vacant and in foreclosure for the past several years.

But Steel said other issues also led to the decision to

back out of the sale.

“There were a lot of factors, actually, a lot of dynamics going on,” Steel said.

“Location was a factor. There are possible other, potentially better locations that all tie into it.”

As to whether library officials would pursue the former Sixth Street School site again, Steel said the board would be looking at several options, but could not speak publicly about them yet.

“We might even reconsider looking at our own building,” Steel said. “There are a lot of options on the table, and we have virtually a new board. ... This board needs an opportunity to sit down and look at all our options. I think we owe it to them to be able to work through this process.”

Other options discussed in the past included if the city were to move to a new building, the library could expand into the city hall space.

But Steel said in order to

make that option work, the 101-year-old city hall building would have to be torn down.

“That is something we are going to be discussing – what we would have to do to that block to make it work for the library,” Steel said. “We were trying to hold off on focus groups until we had a location, and now we don’t [have a location]. We are reviewing everything we should do. It does not cost us any money to host a few focus groups.”

Steel said the Cetron decision would be up for discussion at its regular meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, though part of the meeting will be in closed session as trustees discuss other locations for a new library building.

The library board canceled a special meeting today to discuss a recent court decision on an annexation dispute with the Batavia Library District. Steel said discussion on that decision might be added to Thursday’s agenda.

Descendents flock to Garfield Farm for event

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Until Saturday, Judy Painter Thompson had never been to Garfield Farm Museum, which is on land her ancestors first settled in 1835.

She was grateful to finally have the opportunity.

“It’s an awesome experience as a genealogist,” said Thompson, of California. “I got to walk on the same land as my ancestors.”

The land that houses Garfield Farm Museum was first settled July 8, 1835, by Sam and Margret Culbertson of Crawford County, Pa. Timothy and Harriet Garfield of Belmont, Vt., bought the couple’s 440 acre claim in June 1841 for $650.

Thompson is the great-great-granddaughter of Sam and Margret Culbertson.

She was one of more than a dozen descendants of the Culbertsons who gathered for a family reunion Saturday at Garfield Farm Museum.

As part of the reunion, Mary Ellen Brue of Wisconsin, a great-great-granddaughter of the couple, and other descendants learned about artifacts, including nails and pottery found near the original log

house built in 1836 by the Culbertsons and later expanded and turned into a tavern by the Garfield family.

“It’s exciting, knowing they were the first people to settle the land,” Brue said.

Garfield Farm Museum operations director Bill Wolcott in 2010 started doing research on the Culbertsons and contacted Brue and Thompson.

“We didn’t know much about the family,” Wolcott said.

Helping piece everything together was a day book that Sam Culbertson carried with him on his trek from Pennsylvania to Illinois.

Wolcott flew out to Arizona earlier this year to pick up the day book from Wes Price, one

of Culbertson’s relatives. He donated the book to the museum.

“It helped put the pieces together,” he said. “It’s amazing it has survived all these years.”

Wendell Harley, the greatgreat-grandson of Timothy Garfield, also was part of the reunion. Harley, who lives near Elburn, is the superintendent of the Garfield Cemetery next to Garfield Farm.

Harley said the reunion was an opportunity for him to learn about the Culbertson family, as well. And he is grateful the museum is helping preserve his family’s history.

“There is so much history here that could have been lost,” he said.

Reunion pays tribute to local settler family

BATAVIA – Batavia resident Karyn Bergsieker liked what she saw Saturday as she walked around the new Art Van Furniture store on Randall Road in Batavia.

“It’s wonderful so far,” Bergsieker said. “Good prices and good variety.”

Bergsieker was among those in attendance at Saturday’s grand opening of the store at 165 Randall Road in Batavia, which formerly housed Wickes Furniture.

Wickes went out of business in 2008.

Her daughter, Courtney Bergsieker, is a member of the Batavia High School dance team, which performed at the grand opening. The store has been open since Sept. 14.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke welcomed the Michigan-based furniture

and mattress retailer to the community. Art Van Furniture also recently opened stores in Orland Park and Hobart, Ind. “Batavia is really looking forward to some very positive synergy from you,” Schielke said, in addressing store officials.

Store manager Gerri Knapp said the store wants to provide “furniture at a reasonable price point, but of a great quality.” The retailer in April announced its plans to open a store in Batavia.

“Batavia is a market that we wanted to be in,” Art Van Furniture CEO Kim Yost said.

He said the building’s size made it ideal for a store.

“It’s 40,000 square feet, which is a good size,” Yost said. “We can’t open a store smaller than 40,000 square feet. It also has great visibility and parking.”

Veteran runner breaks through at Fox Valley

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jeff Kelly started running marathons 20 years ago, counting numerous respectable finishes among the 30-plus races he’s completed.

He had never won a marathon, and at age 39, those ambitions were beginning to flicker.

On Sunday, the Urbana man added a landmark moment to his accomplished running career, winning the fourth annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon in 2:40.01.

“I get real emotional, and it pops up at weird points,” said Kelly, who finished fourth at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati in 2003. “It hits me, and I tear up, and then that goes away, and I’m happy. I do get emotional, but then I go back to ‘I’ve got to keep working.’

“It’s very exciting to me. It means a lot to get a win because I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to run hard. I’m almost 40, so this is a huge thing for me.”

Kelly’s winning time was less than two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Mark Wehrman, 27, of Chicago.

Kelly works at Carle Heart & Vascular Institute in Urbana, helping administer heart tests. He was joined for the late portion of the race by one of his running-group teammates from the Champaign area, Brandon Smith.

“To actually win and get some glory for all your hard work is pretty incredible for the amount of time that he puts into it and the passion he has for it,” Smith said. “I know it was very emo-

tional for him. He won’t even justify it in words how much it means to him.

He’s probably going to train like twice as hard now.”

Kelly has run big-city marathons such as Boston and Chicago but prefers smaller races like Fox Valley, saying “the bigger they get, the more work it is.” It was his first appearance at the Fox Valley race, which begins and ends in downtown St. Charles and snakes along the Fox River through Geneva, Batavia, North Aurora and Aurora.

“It’s fairly fast,” Kelly said of the river trail-intensive course. “At the end there were some hair-pin turns that hit you when you’re hurting. Overall, it’s great. I kind of felt like I was on a long run most of the day because there was nobody really except the [half-marathoners] that I could see.”

Wehrman was happy with his second-place performance and the Boston Marathon qualification that came with it, though he was unsure whether it would apply to the 2014 or 2015 Boston race.

“My goal was time, I wasn’t necessarily concerned about place, but it’s fun to finish in the top three, at any time,” Wehrman said. “And of course having a time to back it up feels really good, too.”

The women’s marathon crown went to Lindsey Kong, 25, of Madison, Wis. A graduate student at the University of Wisconsin studying physical therapy, Kong also is a former runner for the Badgers cross country and track teams.

While thrilled to win the race, Kong badly wanted to beat the 3-hour mark.

Her time of 3:01.23 still was a women’s course record.

“I feel silly complaining, but when you’re so close …” said Kong, who only had run one marathon before Sunday.

It was a classic, sun-splashed fall morning, especially ideal for dense clusters of spectators compared to past years.

“The biggest change I’m seeing now, and it’s partly weather-related, is spectators,” said Craig Bixler, co-race organizer along with fellow St. Charles resident Dave Sheble. “I’ve heard from the runners there was not a blank space out there on the course, and in past years, we had pockets of spectators, and then areas where there’s no one out watching, and they’re running along kind of in solitude.”

The total field of registered runners for the three races – as has been the case all four years, race day included a 20-mile run and a half-marathon – was about 4,500 as the event continued its incremental growth. The final mile of the affiliated, summer-long “Kids Marathon” took place Saturday.

Sheble said there were about 1,000 race-day volunteers Sunday tending to various components of the event.

Heather Ruiz, of Niles, experienced the day from both perspectives of runner and spectator.

Ruiz, part of the North Shore Distance Running Club, ran the half-marathon, then settled into a grassy area along the banks of the Fox River just before the final turn to cheer on clubmates and other runners.

Time to give the Marmion football team some love.

Anyone who knows high school football out this way knows going up to Woodstock and beating Marian Central is a big-time achievement.

The Cadets are 4-0 and appear to be a bona fide contender in the Suburban Christian, although St. Francis can tell Marmion all about how tough Montini’s going to be to deal with.

Sly thought the Spartans might give the Broncos more of a tussle, but no shame in losing to Montini.

We’ll see how St. Francis bounces back next week against Aurora Christian.

Around the Tri-Cities, kind of a ho-hum night. East was the only team that had a chance to make a statement, and it didn’t turn out so hot for the Saints down in Neuqua.

Oh well. You start 3-0, and you earn a little cushion.

Geneva desperately needed to beat Larkin and managed to do so in a wild one in Elgin. The days of the Vikings being able to check a game off against a team like Larkin as an easy W might be finished, but the Vikes still are in the thick of playoff contention, with a big one coming against North.

North did what it was supposed to against Elgin, and after two OT losses, a running clock win had to be refreshing for the Stars.

Same with the Knights over lowly Streator. Losing Balluff is a heartbreaker, but there aren’t going to be any teams in the NI Big 12 who pity Kaneland, you can book that.

As for unbeatens, we’re down to Marmion, Kaneland and Aurora Christian. And when it came to Week 4, it was the Cadets who put the biggest exclamation mark on that sparkling record.

A little help: Jeff Kelly, winner of the men’s marathon, and Lindsey Kong, winner of the women’s marathon, had something in common Sunday – moral support on the course from a close acquaintance.

In Kong’s case, her boyfriend, Gabriel Stanek, ran the entire race with her. Kong said Stanek could have beaten 3 hours on his own; she came in at 3:01.23.

“He encouraged me when I wanted to give up, so that was very helpful,” Kong said.

Two of Kong’s sisters also participated in Sunday’s festivities, including women’s half-marathon second-place finisher, Amy Kong.

Kelly, meanwhile, said his friend, Brandon Smith – who, like Kelly, is part of the “CU Racing Team” in the Champaign-Urbana area – ran about seven miles with him late in the race.

Bulldogs give Sabres, future foes plenty to think about

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com STREAMWOOD – The Batavia football team aimed to win a game Saturday, and perhaps send a message to future opponents while they were at it.

Both objectives seemingly were accomplished Saturday as Batavia clubbed Streamwood, 56-14, at Millennium Field in Upstate Eight Conference River play.

“If teams come to scout us, we want to give them something to be concerned about,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “So if somebody was here today from our league, we would hope that they’d

see a product that was executed well and was diverse offensively, defensively can bring pressure and cause you concern if you make a mistake.”

The Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0 UEC River) played short-handed because of injury, especially on the defensive side, but still enacted the running clock for the entire second half after building a 49-7 halftime bulge.

Bulldogs senior running back Anthony Scaccia scored four touchdowns in the second quarter, two on rushes, two on receptions. Scaccia (14 rushes for 129 yards, three receptions for 53 yards) did all of his work in the first half.

Playing on turf for the second straight week, Scaccia’s knack for leaving defenders in the wake of his sharp cuts and spins was again evident.

“Especially on my screens, I think I had Max Heidgen and a couple other guys just lay out kids, so it was easy for me to just make cuts off of that and score,” Scaccia said.

Bulldogs senior quarterback Micah Coffey completed his last 12 passes of the afternoon after misfiring on his first two. Coffey threw touchdowns passes to Jordan Zwart, Rourke Mullins, Scaccia and Blake Crowder, with the 4-yard toss to Crowder coming with 12 seconds to go in the first half.

ST. CHARLES – Paul Thomas discovered the Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon not through word-of-mouth or an online marathon search engine.

The Batavian stumbled on the race during a morning run last September, and on Sunday, his muscle memory more than held up.

Thomas earned the title of top Tri-Cities men’s marathon finisher after traversing the familiar course in 3:05:12, a personal record in his third career marathon.

“It kind of snuck up on me at the end,” Thomas said, “but it was a good day and a nice time.”

A 33-year-old ironworker, Thomas lives near the marathon’s seven-mile marker on the Fox River Trail, which doubles as his training course on

most mornings.

Although a friend was in the 2012 Fox Valley field, Thomas said he didn’t know a marathon was going on until the opening stages of his run.

He followed along the marathon course for about half of a 17-mile workout.

“It was supposed to be a long, slow run, and then with people out there cheering and whatnot, it turned into a race pace,” Thomas said.

Sporting a puzzled look and no bib number, Thomas still blended in.

“The only time I caught any flak was when I was going to veer from the course,” he said.

“I’m like, ‘I’m not in the race.’ ” Thomas found himself very much involved Sunday in a tune-up for next month’s Chicago Marathon. His wife, Tina, will be part of the field, too.

“She doesn’t like to run with anybody, though,” Thomas said.

I do not think it is healthy to lie to children.

I am thankful and appreciate that I have these skills.

The Argyle Sweater

Dear Abby: My granddaughter was murdered by her boyfriend. They had an 18-month-old daughter, “Bella.” All three were living together when he shot her, but we don’t know what room Bella was in when it happened.

Another family member (I’ll call her Lucy) took Bella into her home, and Bella calls her Mom. Lucy has been taking Bella to the prison to visit her father, but has told her he is her uncle.

I told Lucy I thought it would be better to wait until Bella is old enough to understand, THEN tell her what happened and let her decide whether she wants to visit her father.

Bella went into the closet one day and came out holding a T-shirt with her mother’s picture on it, asking, “Who is this?” Lucy’s only response was, “You know you aren’t allowed in my closet. Take that back!”

She never answered the question.

I have a framed photo of Bella’s mother on my wall.

The last time Bella was here, I noticed her looking out of the corner of her eye and scowling at the picture.

I was the only one who noticed.

Bella is now 4, and I can’t accept that Lucy thinks it’s OK to lie to her. I feel it should be Bella’s decision whether to visit her dad.

Am I wrong?

How should this be handled so Bella isn’t traumatized any more than need be?

Because of these incidents, I’m almost convinced she should have some kind of counseling, but perhaps she’s too young.

This deal would put some declarers into the hospital, metaphorically speaking. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond two. East wins with his ace and returns the diamond eight. After ruffing, how should declarer proceed?

South’s three-heart rebid would usually advertise 14-16 high-card points, but this hand has seven clear-cut playing tricks, making it easily strong enough for the jump. Do not be locked into high-card points; always think about winners.

North had a borderline raise, but we love to try for a game bonus, especially when vulnerable.

South has four potential losers: one spade, one diamond and two clubs. He has only nine immediate winners: one spade, seven hearts and one club. Declarer must get two club tricks.

Some players would go that far, draw trumps, cross to dummy with a spade, and play a club to their queen. But when the finesse lost, they would go down one and complain about being unlucky.

However, that was only a 50 percent line. There was a 63 percenter available. Along with East’s having the club king, South should also try to find East with the club jack and 10.

Declarer should cash his heart ace, play a heart to dummy’s king, then lead a club to his nine.

Here, it pulls out the king, ending South’s problem. But if West could have won the trick with the 10 or jack, declarer would have returned to dummy with a spade and played a club to his queen, losing nothing over finessing the queen on the first round.
