t’s been rivalry time around the Tri-Cities area for the past week or so, with Geneva taking on Batavia and St. Charles East taking on St. Charles North in football, volleyball and tennis.

Bright Beginnings offering ‘children’s day out’ program

GENEVA – A new “children’s day out” program has been launched at Faith Baptist Church Mill Creek, providing a faith-based foundation for toddlers and children.

Batavia resident Kim Jacobsen, director of Bright Beginnings, said the program officially started Sept. 3, and Jacobsen said she has been working since July to create the curriculum.

“We have classrooms that are waiting for people to come in,” she said. “The objective is to provide a social foundation in a Christian environment.”

The motto for the new day care center is “rooted in faith, growing in knowledge, reaching in love.” The program runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and serves children between the ages of 15 months through 5 years old. Families do not need to be members of the church to attend. Jacobsen said many “day out” programs run only two

hours, but Bright Beginnings offers a four-hour day that includes lunch.

That block of time allows parents to get errands done without a tight two-hour deadline.

“It does end up being a blessing for the parents, as well as the kids,” Jacobsen said.

She said her favorite part about directing the program are the connections she makes with families. Jacobsen, who has been working with children for 25 years, said she ran a similar children’s day out program at Knox Presbyterian Church of Naperville before starting the program in Geneva.

The curriculum at Bright Beginnings helps prepare children for kindergarten through working with colors, letters, shapes and numbers, and refining listening and motor skills, Jacobsen said.

She said once the program is running, she wants to offer parents and children a free trial day to see whether the

“Art on Fire” was initiated by the city with assistance from its Cultural Arts Commission to have individuals “adopt” and paint fire hydrants to display creative artwork throughout Geneva.

Jacobsen said she looks forward to seeing the program grow.

“It’s been so much fun,” she said. “This has been a dream of mind and I’ve been working toward this my whole career.

Judge David R. Akemann Akemann’s Sept. 18 order serves as a clarification of his original ruling in the case, which was issued Sept. 3.

The case had been brought in 2011 by a group of 17 parents of Davis Elementary students, who alleged that District 303 had acted contrary to the Illinois School Code when it converted Davis to a school for students in kindergarten to second grade, and Richmond into a campus for students in the third to fifth grades.

The parents argued that under the NCLB, the district should have created a school improvement plan specifically to bolster academic performance of the students at Richmond, which included a significant number of Hispanic students, rather than simply merge the student populations of the two schools.

Richmond had failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress standards for four consecutive years, which, under the NCLB, obliged the district to craft a plan to address that performance.

The courts ruled in favor of the parents on that question, ordering District 303 to develop the required academic improvement plan within six months. The plan is to include the ability of par-

ents with students at Richmond-Davis to send their children to other elementary schools within District 303, the judge said.

The judge said the plan “must be developed in collaboration with and the input of parents of students attending school in, and the staff serving in, the Davis and Richmond buildings.”

But when the parents then asked the court to break up the new Richmond-Davis grade center alignment, Akemann said the courts would not take that step.

District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said the district was pleased the judge had refrained from ordering the dissolution of the Richmond-Davis alignment.

He said the decision will “allow for stability” at the schools.

Schlomann said the district intends to begin the work next week of drafting a school improvement plan to submit to the judge for review. He said the plan would specifically address academic shortcomings among the school’s two primary “subgroups,” including its Hispanic students and students from lower-income households.

He said administrators also will discuss how best to involve parents and staff in the creation of those improvement plans. Some possibilities include large group meetings, surveys or committees that included parents from the two “primary subgroups.”

Timothy Dwyer, a lawyer for the parents, said he welcomed the judge’s requirement that the new improvement plans include both choice and input from parents and staff at the schools.

“It was really important that the parents be involved in any kind of educational plan,” Dwyer said. “That was clearly something that did not happen in 2011.”

He said he had yet to discuss the decision with the parents, so he did not know if the parents might appeal.

Road work expected to end by November

Church to launch tutoring program

Roadway construction involving a road closure on a portion of Burlington Road, from Dittman Road to Route 47, has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.

Anticipated work includes removal and replacement of an existing box culvert, which will require a full road closure of Burlington Road for approximately 60 days.

Traffic will be directed around the closure using a posted detour route, utilizing Dittman Road, Plato Road and Route 47.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route and should expect increased travel times during construction.

ST. CHARLES – A Kane County judge has refused to undo the decision by St. Charles School District 303 to effectively merge Richmond and Davis elementary schools.

Kane County Circuit Judge David R. Akemann issued his ruling in the matter Wednesday, rejecting a request from parents of students who formerly attended St. Charles’ Davis Elementary School to step in and redraw attendance zone boundaries within District 303.

Akemann reiterated his findings that District 303 had skirted the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act in combining the two schools.

He said the court would “require that the district perform its mandated functions” in crafting a school improvement plan for the students of Richmond-Davis Elementary School, under the guidelines of the NCLB, as he said the district should have done for the former Richmond Elementary School years earlier.

However, he said the court would not go beyond that and order Richmond-Davis to again be divided into two separate schools.

Akemann said such an order would represent “an inappropriate remedy” that would “replace the quasi-legislative authority of the district” to draw its own attendance zone boundaries for its elementary schools.

He said “boundary decisions are and remain the prerogative of the school district.”

“In other words, it is not the reconfiguration that the school district did that, considered in isolation, was contrary to the mandates of the NCLB,” Akemann wrote.

“Rather, it was the district failure to provide the corrective action mandates that this court now orders, [that] ran contrary to the NCLB from which the state cannot provide a waiver.”

A festival of art

Batavia event to present variety of creative activities this weekend

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – During this weekend’s ninth annual Art in Your Eye Fine Art Festival, festivalgoers will be able not only to view all types of art, but make their own art as well.

“Children will have the chance to paint umbrellas that will be put together as a sculpture,” festival coordinator Rebecca Allen said.

“That’s among the hands-on activities that kids can participate in.”

The festival will show off the talents of local and national artists from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday at the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and Island Avenue in downtown Batavia.

The free festival is sponsored by the city of Batavia, the Batavia Library and the Batavia Park District. The Kane County Chronicle also is a sponsor.

The festival is usually held in August, but organizers moved it to September this year in hopes of better weather.

The indoor juried City Hall Exhibit provides a venue for 50 local artists to do their work. As part of the exhibit, the Student Legacy Exhibit will feature the artwork of area high school and college level art students.

The day promises to be full of things to see and do. Water Street Studios artist Greta Bell’s traveling art project, R/Evolving Circus, will be on display. The project gathers stories of treasured objects and displays paintings of them on a collapsible, bicycle powered carousel.

Bell will assemble her carousel from 10 a.m. to noon each day, with readings at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Another new event this year is the slam poetry/spoken word showcase presented by the Teen Writers and Artists Project. CLEVELAND – Carol Joy Heckman was born in Cleveland, to A.A. and Carol Joy (King) Heckman.

At the age of 2, the family moved to St. Paul, Minn. Growing up in St. Paul, she excelled in academics and with the school newspaper. She graduated in the top of her 1948 Central High class.

After high school, she attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She continued to excel at academics and expanded her skills in journalism. While she was at Vassar, she was admitted into the Phi Betta Kappa honor society. She graduated with distinction in May 1952.

Carol Joy married her high school sweetheart, George E. Morrison III, on Nov. 28, 1952. Together, they traveled the U.S. and pacific while George advanced in the Army. Throughout their travels, Carol Joy kept up her love of journalism by writing for the Army post newspaper or rewriting the words of popular tunes for local entertainment. Her other hobbies included camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters canoe area, knitting and all types of reading.

In 1966, Carol and George left the military and began new careers. Carol became a librarian for the Ottawa Public library in Ottawa, and George became a safety engineer for Marbon Chemicals. Carol helped countless students research their papers and learn more about the world around them. In 1977, she earned her master’s degree in library science from Northern Illinois University. In 1978, Carol and George moved to St. Charles and Carol became a reference librarian for the DuPage Library System. She retired from the library system in June 1996.

Three area Special Olympians place in sports festival

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com Three local athletes were recognized at the state level for their golf skills during the 2013 Special Olympics Illinois Outdoor Sports Festival held in Decatur over the weekend.

Athletes participated in golf and softball during the event, which drew more than 600 Special Olympians from throughout the state for the two-day tournament.

Thomas Hollman of Geneva took third place in the Golf Individual Skills competition; Anthony R. Englin of Batavia was in second place in the Golf 9-Hole competition; and Adam K. Baglayan of South Elgin took third place in the Golf 5-Hole competition.

Some Special Olympians from Illinois qualified for the national championship games, which will take place summer 2014 in New Jersey, said Amy Kaylor, manager of sports and competition for this area’s Special Olympics Illinois branch.

In the golf competition, judges focused on skills and performance in a traditional golf game.

Some athletes participated in a unified competition,

which pairs Special Olympians with a nondisabled athlete and combines their scores. Softball games test general skills, T-ball and performance in a traditional softball game.

“Our guys are really busy,” Kaylor said of the area’s athletes. “Right now, they’re finishing up the volleyball season, and in the meantime, basketball season is right around the corner.”

She said Special Olympians also are preparing for winter games, such as downhill skiing and snow-shoeing.

In addition to upcoming sports seasons, Special Olympics Illinois is hosting the Pumpkin Pedal, a fundraiser for the organization Oct. 6.

Kaylor said bike riders don’t have to race to be a part of the event, which starts goes from 7:30 to 10 a.m., with lunch provided after. Bikers can choose from a 10-, 20- or 28-mile course along the Great Western Trail, starting at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve off of Dean Street in St. Charles. A 40-mile and 65-mile ride also will be available.

The case was moved to McHenry County Circuit Court after a Kane County judge told Geneva library trustees she was friends with another judge who happens to be the father of Batavia Library Board President Douglas Sullivan.

Regarding the first affirmative defense filed by Geneva Public Library District, the judge ruled in favor of the Geneva Public Library Dis-

trict and against the Batavia Public Library District.

At the same time, Sullivan ruled that Batavia Library District’s original annexation was invalid because of improper caption on the agenda, which is considered a violation of the Open Meetings Act; and an erroneous legal description that created a lack of contiguity for more than 100 acres of the 1,600 acres sought to be annexed.

Both the Batavia Library District and the Geneva Library District party have 30 days to appeal the order.

GENEVA – A liquor control hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today on charges that EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva, allowed liquor to be served after 2 a.m. for a party late last month that included celebrity guests.

The hearing will be at the City Council chambers, 22 S. First St., and is open to the public.

The city alleged that EvenFlow was open from 2 a.m. to 5:45 a.m. Aug. 25, and “sold, furnished, gave away, or permitted the consumption of alcoholic liquors” on its premises, in violation of its liquor license.

If EvenFlow is convicted on the charges, it would mark the establishment’s third liquor code violation, and its second for serving alcohol after 2 a.m.

Mayor Kevin Burns, in his capacity as liquor commissioner, said he would not comment on the possibility that EvenFlow could lose its liquor license.

“A hearing is scheduled,” Burns said in a text message.

“It is inappropriate for me to comment prior to presenta-

tion of information by both the defendants and the prosecutors.”

The charges stem from local ordinance tickets for public intoxication that were issued to Hollywood celebrities in town Aug. 25 for a charity event hosted by TV personality Jenny McCarthy at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles.

The celebrities moved to EvenFlow for a private after-party.

Those ticketed at 5:45 a.m. outside EvenFlow for public intoxication included reality TV and soap opera star Kelly Monaco; celebrity dance instructor Sergey Onik; movie and TV actor Heath Freeman; McCarthy’s sister, Joanne McCarthy; and two Geneva residents.

EvenFlow owners maintained they did not violate the city’s liquor ordinance, saying last call was at 1:50 a.m. that morning and that those cited for public intoxication were still drunk from drinks served before 2 a.m.

A message left at the venue seeking further comment was not returned.

According to the police report, those cited said they drank alcohol until moments before stepping outside, shortly before 5:45 a.m.

ST. CHARLES – Kye D. Gaffey, the former superintendent of Illinois Prison Schools, and his wife, Jennifer, 42, are to appear in Kane County Branch Court next month on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and criminal damage to property.

The couple filed court papers Thursday, setting a new court date for Oct. 3.

The Gaffeys, of Sterling, were charged Aug. 15 in connection with an incident at her ex-husband’s house in St. Charles. According to police reports, a neighbor reported

GENEVA – A Geneva man was charged with felony unlawful restraint after he reportedly blocked his estranged wife from leaving their house, according to police reports.

Jeffrey L. Modjeski, 32, of the 1000 block of Westfield Course, also was charged Sept. 1 with four counts of misdemeanor domestic battery.

The felony carries a penalty of one to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000.

The misdemeanors carry a penalty of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

Modjeski posted $350 bond or 10 percent of $3,500 bail.

He is to appear in court Oct. 16.

According to police reports, Modjeski’s wife came to their house to take custody of their children and get some of her personal things in their bedroom.

Modjeski allegedly blocked her from leaving the bedroom, then when she got past him Jeffrey L. anyway, he Modjeski allegedly blocked her path in the hallway with his body and by extending his arms.

She fell down a stairway in an effort to get away from him, according to reports.

She picked up a crying child and tried to get away from him and fell, both hitting their heads and elbows, according to reports.

No easy way out THE WASHINGTON POST Americans may never agree on who or what caused the financial crisis that began five years ago with the collapse of Lehman Brothers. But at least one consequence of the crisis is indisputable – the assumption of massive economic power by the Federal Reserve.

Anyone who doubts it need simply observe market behavior after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke announced Wednesday that the central bank will continue buying securities at the rate of $85 billion a month – contrary to expectations that it would begin to “taper” those purchases, which already have swollen the Fed’s balance sheet to roughly four times its pre-crisis size. Bulls went wild, believing that the Fed’s easy-money policies, which help prop up the price of stocks and other assets, may continue at least through the end of Bernanke’s term early next year.

This much Fed power is not in the long-term interest of the U.S. economy, nor that of the world. We say this not because the Fed’s policies under Bernanke have been wrong. To the contrary, taking interest rates to zero was aggressive but appropriate in the face of an epic recession. Early in the crisis, the growth in the Fed’s balance sheet resulted from the extension of emergency credits – a classic case of the central bank acting as a panic-stopping “lender of last resort.” The Fed’s subsequent effort to push down longterm interest rates, and thus stimulate economic activity, by purchasing more than $1 trillion each in Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities with freshly created money is less precedented and therefore more controversial – but also plausible, given the economy’s intractable weakness.

Yet the Fed’s huge role represents more responsibility for the economy than a single technocratic institution should bear for too long. Among the chairman’s innovations has been an attempt to fine-tune market expectations through more open communication of Fed intentions. Precision, though, can be elusive. In June, Bernanke candidly announced that the bond-buying “taper” might start by year’s end – inadvertently triggering a rise in interest rates that hurt the U.S. housing recovery and clobbered emerging markets. Bernanke’s decision not to taper is at least, in part, an attempt to undo that.

At a news conference Wednesday, he implicitly chided market mavens for betting too heavily on a taper. “We can’t let market expectations dictate our policy actions,” he said. Maybe not, but when the world’s most powerful central bank intervenes so heavily in markets, traders are going to try to profit from its chairman’s every utterance. Yet judging by the forecasts the Fed released Wednesday, the U.S. economy is in for several more years of subpar growth – and, therefore, no swift unwinding of the unconventional policies.

Bernanke seems to recognize the status quo is unhealthy, yet, as the Fed noted, it’s hard for the central bank to retreat as long as “fiscal policy is restraining economic growth” – that is, as long as Congress won’t do its part. The list of that body’s failings is long, from the indiscriminate sequester to the lack of a longterm budget-and-tax “grand bargain” to the current manufactured crisis over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling. Unless and until partisan gridlock ends, the Fed dominates, with all the benefits and risks that entails.

they all are. I have personally buried myself deeply in debt in providing the medical care that each one needed because of irresponsible people who dump them.

To those people who feel that they have a right to trap their neighbors’ cats, they should familiarize themselves with anti-cruelty laws, many of which felines are protected under. And maybe these laws and code enforcements should go after these kinds of people, instead of the people who have a heart of compassion for these animals.

Bounce-back year for Riccobene, Spartans

HEATON – If only St. Francis lineman Keegan Riccobene could promote himself as well as he can block.

Sizing up his college football prospects, the senior played it low-key.

“Obviously, I’m supposed to shoot for the stars when it comes to a dream like that, but hopefully as a walk-on player, maybe, I mean a slim chance of a scholarship, but if it happens, it happens,” Riccobene said. “Anything could happen. We still have [six] weeks, and hopefully we make it to the playoffs.”

The Spartans are looking very much like a playoff team, and Riccobene’s muscle is no small part of the equation.

The St. Charles resident has been a key component of a high-caliber offensive line for the Spartans, who put their 3-0 mark on the line tonight against fellow unbeaten and four-time defending 5A state champion Montini.

Riccobene, St. Francis’ right tackle, also has seen substantial time at nose tackle in the early going, but Spartans coach Greg Purnell sounds inclined to have Riccobene focus on his offensive responsibilities as the schedule stiffens in the coming weeks.

“I think as an offensive tackle, it’s been more conducive for him, and the last few games have been pretty warm, and he’s a big man, you know,” Purnell said. “He’s 6-3, close to 300 pounds, so it helps him maybe to just to go one way, but we’ll be using him on defense, also.”

St. Francis appears headed for a major bounce-back season after missing the playoffs in 2012, and it’s similarly been a night-and-day experience for Riccobene on a personal level.

Riccobene’s junior season was marred by a concussion he suffered in practice that caused him anguish on and off the field.

“I was heartbroken,” Riccobene said. “It was really upsetting. I lost a lot of time.

I got back and I worked as hard as I could and did what I could. I got playing time toward the last three games but I missed about three games. It was pretty harsh.”

Starting this season alongside fellow St. Charles resident John Vargyas – a guard – on the Spartans’ O-line, Riccobene and Co. have helped Bartlett transfer James Butler make headlines

as one of the state’s top running backs in the early going.

Butler has already rushed for 547 yards and nine touchdowns in comfortable wins against Riverside-Brookfield, Plainfield South and Chicago Christian.

Riccobene, who attended Elgin Academy before switching to St. Francis for high school, was attracted to St. Francis largely because of the Spartans’ football prowess, although Purnell’s program is in some ways difficult to recognize this season.

Not only is St. Francis playing home games in its gleaming new stadium, but the Spartans have abandoned

their Wing-T offense – a long-time Purnell trademark – in favor of opening up the offense. That’s required a steep learning curve for the Spartans’ linemen.

“As a Wing-T offense, every single lineman had a single assignment,” Riccobene said. “It was do this, and you’ll be set. In the spread, when we have our zone blocking scheme, it’s been different. We work as a whole, entire unit. We move as one group where we take a certain step and we move in a certain path. I’ve actually liked it a lot. … I like how we move as an entire line instead of as just one singular block.”

Making the change wasn’t easy for the venerable Purnell, who has ceded control of the offense to new offensive coordinator Jesse Pierce.

“Even though I’ve been a die-hard, Wing-T’er all my life, I felt the change would be good for St. Francis,” Purnell said. “I felt it would be good for the skill kids we have and I also felt that it would be good for St. Francis down the road.

“All young kids want to throw the ball a little bit more now, they want to play a little bit more wide-open offense, so consequently we also feel this will help attract young football players to Francis as well.”

It’s a shame the trek from Aurora to Woodstock is such a haul for Marmion-backers because this matchup of 3-0 teams is worth seeing.

The Cadets had success against Marian during the T.J. Lally era but have struggled with the perenially potent Hurricanes the past couple years.

COACHING SPOTLIGHT It’ll be interesting to see how the four Tri-Cities teams bounce back emotionally after last week’s rivalry games, especially St. Charles North, which is coming off its second overtime heartbreaker in a three-week span.

Of the four, St. Charles East by far has the toughest test this week in 2-1 Neuqua Valley.

Saints coach Mike Fields said the team hasn’t had any difficulty transitioning from the overtime win over North.

“They’ve been a pretty resilient bunch,” Fields said. “They want to get better week to week.”

PLAYOFF WATCH After falling to IC Catholic Prep last week and with late-season games against Marmion and Montini on the schedule, Aurora Central Catholic can ill-afford to stumble against teams it should beat, such as tonight’s Suburban Christian Conference Gold opponent, Chicago Christian.

Neuqua Valley wide receiver Mikey Dudek vs. St. Charles East’s DBs. This one shaped up as a major challenge for the Saints even at full strength, but with one of East’s top cornerbacks, Geno Rogers, sidelined with injury, the Saints’ secondary will be strained all the more.

Fields said Mitch Munroe will see more extended time at cornerback and likely will do his part to bottle up Dudek, an Illinois recruit. The blazing-fast Dudek was recruited by the Illini despite only standing about 5-foot-10.

“We believe in Mitch a lot,” Fields said.

“He’s a returning all-conference kid, so we know he’s capable of playing well out there, and we have Scott [Robak] on the other side. Hopefully, we can contain him.

We’re not going to shut him down because he’s a heck of a ballplayer.”

Look for standout Saints safety Brannon Barry to provide his corners plenty of support on Dudek patrol.

East’s defense is going to give up substantial yardage to a Neuqua team that has scored 34 points or more in each of its three games against a quality schedule (wins against Naperville North and South Elgin, and a Week 2 loss to Naperville Central), but the key is buckling down late in drives, as the Saints did in last week’s overtime win against St. Charles North.

“Everyone wants to talk about offense,” Fields said. “The defense had that bendnot-break mentality [against St. Charles North], and that’s exactly what they did.”

East also will try to take advantage of a Neuqua team that is talented but has had it share of mental lapses.

“What I’m concerned about is our team right now,” Neuqua coach Bill Ellinghaus said. “We need to put four quarters together. We’ve had some good quarters, we’ve had a good half but we have not played four quarters. That’s what concerns me most.”

“I think it’s going to be a great football game, I really do,” Ellinghaus said. “I’d be shocked if anyone thought it would be a lopsided game one way or another.”

It could be done, but a formidable pool of Wildcats playmakers – wide receiver Ryan Kuhl and running back TJ Scruggs are solid complements to Dudek – might be enough to hand East a setback in this quality matchup.

The skinny: Life without Jesse Balluff arrives for Kaneland after the Knights’ star running back suffered a worrisome knee injury last week against Sterling. Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said MRI results were not known as of early Thursday afternoon but Balluff is certainly out tonight. One of the area’s elite running backs and a threeyear varsity performer, Balluff is a major loss, but Fedderly remains optimistic about the Knights’ running game behind the team’s brawny offensive line. Fullback Nate Dyer likely will assume a larger load, while safety Isaac Swithers projects to see considerable time at tailback. “He was a load last year on the sophomore team,” Fedderly said of Swithers. “He’s a really good player.” Also reassuring, the Knights’ offense continued to click last week at Sterling after Balluff’s early injury. Tonight’s opponent is probably a good one in a week that has not be easy on the Knights’ psyche; Streator has struggled offensively, scoring a season-high 14 points in its opening, 22-14 loss against East Peoria.

The skinny: It’s not often that Marmion coach Dan Thorpe has prepared for an opponent that rolled up 81 points the week before, but Marian destroyed Guerin that thoroughly last week. “We haven’t even said the word ‘81,’ Thorpe said.

“We’re just playing the Marian that we know and respect and admire, and we’re excited for the opportunity.” Marmion’s defensive line will be considerably out-bulked, but that’s partially by design. “The old days of big [defensive tackles] and all that, those days are gone right now in high school football,” Thorpe said. “One, you don’t have them, and two, with everyone running the spread offense, we noticed in playoff games, the teams that had success in the state championships have a lot of kids 175 to 205 [pounds] starting and playing defense, and we’ve gone that way.

We’ve gone for speed versus bulk.” Thorpe said Joe Talbot, Jimmy Rogers and Nick Ferraro are some of his D-linemen who fit that mold.

The kids are picking it up. We’ve been improving every week, but we’re going up against a very good football team, also.” Purnell is impressed with the size and physicality of Montini’s defense, and the Broncos have an elite quarterback in Alex Wills, who threw for five touchdowns in Montini’s impressive, Week 2 win at East St. Louis.

The skinny: As if interim Wheaton Academy coach Brad Thornton didn’t have a massive enough challenge at hand, Warriors starting QB Nathan Lopez is out with a bone contusion, meaning it will be up to sophomores David Thrasher and Steven Sellers to run the show against an Eagles defense that has allowed seven points, total, through three weeks. “[Injuries] are something that every single team deals with at some point or another,” Thornton said. “Unfortunately, it happened at this point to that guy, but you’ve got to go forward with what you have, and we’re excited about those two guys progressing.”

Extra point: Thornton and his staff are searching for fight from his players on each snap, something that he said occasionally was not the case during last week’s Montini bloodbath.

Racing reality surely tastes bittersweet for Ludke these days. By earning his second straight Late Model points title Saturday night, the 25-year-old St. Charles resident, by rule, also made himself ineligible to race in that class in 2014.

“It’s really surreal, you know,” Ludke said. “For one, I never thought that I’d become a champion racing.

And then to be forced out of a class in racing for winning consecutive championships is weird, man. I don’t even know how to comprehend what is happening right now.”

Ludke edged friend Jordan Jackowiak of DeKalb, 235-226, once all the tabulating was done after the final full show of the track’s 50th anniversary season.

Ludke entered the night with a one-point edge, but

“We went in there one point ahead, and by the time we got to the feature we were one down,” said Scott Ludke, Tim’s dad and crew chief. “Oh, my. I’m surprised I didn’t have a little extra paramedic with me on standby.”

Naturally, the 50-lap feature was dripping with drama, too.

About 15 laps into the race, Ludke and Jackowiak tangled bumpers, and Jackowiak wound up on the marking tires lining the inside of the track as he tried the same wriggling maneuver as Ludke.

Still, Jackowiak’s fate was foremost on Ludke’s mind.

“I was so mad all night.

I couldn’t really enjoy the championship because of what happened,” Ludke said.

to me, and I’m sure he was, too. But we talked it over afterward. He came up to me before I could even get to him to make sure I knew everything that happened on the track was just racing.

“You can’t say enough about that, that kind of sportsmanship.”

Ludke has drawn his own accolades during his rise through the Speedway circuit, which included a memorable tie with mentor Jimmy Stephens for the Spectator title in 2010. Rebounding from early spring car trouble in 2011, he placed third in his Late Models debut that season, then won the title in 2012.

Ludke hopes to hear humming engines and track announcements from pit row next season, but already is preparing himself for the possibility of a brief return to life as a small “s” spectator.

‘Crafty’ Larson strikes late

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – It’s not unusual to see a buzzer beater in basketball, but they’re pretty rare in soccer. Batavia junior Ian Larson all but pulled one off Thursday night to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over rival Geneva.

“Before I got the ball, I looked back at the clock and noticed there were 15 seconds left,” Larson said. “So I just tried to turn around and get a shot off before the buzzer.”

Larson did that, putting the ball into the back of the net with 11.4 seconds remaining in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division match.

Moments earlier, it looked like the Vikings (3-4, 0-3 UEC River) would have the final scoring opportunity as they hurried to get a throw-in with less than 30 seconds to play.

But the ball wound up on the foot of Batavia junior Adam Heinz, who played it upfield to Larson.

Despite the dwindling seconds on the scoreboard, Larson kept his cool to get off a quality shot.

“I kind of had a chance to shoot at the top of the box,” Larson said. “I kind of faked the shot and pushed it past the defender and got an open shot, so I took it.”

Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said his side was well aware of Larson’s play-making potential.

“Before the game, we talked about how crafty Ian was,” Estabrook said. “And that he’s left-footed. Given that, he still made a brilliant play. Part of that goal falls on our defense, but also fantastic players make fantastic plays, and you’ve got to give Ian some credit for winning the game for them.”

A victory by the Bulldogs (7-2-1, 3-1) seemed unlikely for much of the match, as they put only three shots on goal.

“The boys did a nice job sticking with it 80 minutes,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “I don’t think we were playing our best game today. That might have had something to do with Geneva, as well, but we missed some opportunities just holding onto the ball, just possessing the ball, some passes that

missed. Even with that, the mentality of the guys was to keep going and create that one chance, and that was pretty amazing.”

With a fairly strong southerly breeze at their backs, the Vikings had the better scoring opportunities in the first half, putting three of their five shots on goal in the opening 40 minutes. The best chance came with four minutes left in the half when freshman midfielder Matt Waldoch made a nice crossing pass into the box and junior Calen Colbert made a nice lunge to get a foot on the ball, but the shot went just wide.

The Bulldogs started to finally put together some scoring chances in the second half, but couldn’t solve Geneva keeper Joe Mozden until Larson’s heroics.

“Our past few games, our defense has brought it together,” Geneva senior forward Grant Bracken said. “I’ve been really proud of them. It was just an unlucky opportunity that happened. We should have stopped him earlier.

We’ve got to stay focused a full 80 [minutes].”

By MATT PUTTIN mputtin@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Friday night football will be alive and well at Bulldog Stadium tonight, albeit with considerably smaller uniform sizes on display.

Since the Batavia varsity football team has a rare Friday night off – the Bulldogs play Saturday at Streamwood – Batavia Youth Football will be playing under the lights beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Normally, Batavia Youth Football plays Saturday mornings at Rotolo Middle School, but with the field open at the high school tonight, Batavia coach Dennis Piron is happy to host the youngsters. Piron was one of the main founders of the Batavia Youth Football organization with former Batavia football head coach Mike Gaspari.

The league began in 2003 and started as a touch football league with 60 children.

Today, the league has greatly expanded, as it has 500 to 600 children enrolled in the flag football program and more than 100 kids in the seventh-grade tackle football league.

The Batavia High School football team has made a large impact on this program. Pi-

ron is having his entire varsity team help out at tonight’s event.

Varsity football players at the high school have good relationships with the children, as they have spent time coaching the Batavia Youth Football Camp during the summer. Batavia senior quarterback Micah Coffey really enjoys being able to share his passion for the game with the kids.

“I look forward to giving these kids the same experience that I get on Friday nights under the lights. I remember being their age and the night game was always an awesome experience,” Coffey wrote in an email.

Batavia Youth Football is a program of the Batavia Park District. It is a volunteer organization that is headed by parents who donate their time to coach. It is celebrating its 10th year this year.

According to the website bataviayouthfootball.net, the flag and tackle football league is committed to teaching children in first through seventh grade “the responsibilities of playing a team sport, combined with the old-fashioned fun of ‘backyard football’ in which every child gets to play.”

If he wants to race at Sycamore in 2014, however, Ludke would have to move up to the Super Late Model ranks. That will take some learning to maneuver, and developing a new car likely would be out of Ludke’s price range, he said.

To that end, he’s already been in touch with Super

Late Models owners at the track.

“It would basically be they own the car, I get in and drive it and do as best I can for them,” Ludke said.

If Ludke can swing a deal, he knows that beats the alternative. “Wait till next year” isn’t supposed to be a refrain for winners.

ELBURN – Seasoned senior Brody Kuhar and recent freshman call-up Jake Hed both navigated Hughes Creek with relative ease Thursday, guiding the Kaneland boys golf team to a 146-170 victory against Jacobs.

Kuhar and Hed shared medalist honors with separate 2-under-par 34s. Those kinds of scores are often the usual for Kuhar and classmate Matt Yonkovich (36), but it’s a welcome sight for Hed to be in the low-man mix, too.

“He’s done a great job proving that he belongs on varsity,” Knights coach Mark Meyer said. “He shows a lot of promise as a freshman, and we’re looking forward to some great golf from him.”

Hed recorded two birdies in his round, while Meyer said Kuhar “kind of caught fire at the end” with four birdies down the stretch to atone for an early double bogey.

Jeremy Faletto (42) rounded out the scoring for Kaneland.

The pet-blessing custom takes place in remembrance of

St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, according to a news release.

The blessing will take place outside, near the main entrance

to St. Peter School.

Mendel Plumbing and Heating Inc. has become one of the first home-service companies in the area to earn SAFEClickID Certified Plus+ status, according to a news release.

SAFEClickID is a new, independent certification and credentialing agency for Chicago-area businesses. All certified companies must pass a rigorous 21-point process to verify they are registered, licensed and insured, states the release. Certified Plus+ companies also conduct approved, annual background checks on each home service employee. All approved workers are issued SAFEClickID photo ID badges that are registered and viewable online in advance of a scheduled service appointment.

The couple was married Sept. 26, 1953, at St. James Catholic Church in Wyoming, Ohio.

Gus Vonderheide was employed by Ford Motor Company and retired in January 1988.

Maureen Vonderheide is a homemaker.

In their 60 years together, the Vonderheides have enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. They’ve devoted their lives to being parents, grandparents and, now, great-grandparents.

The couple has three sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The 2014 Honda Accord better than 2013 What is better than a 2013 Honda Accord?

OK. Dumb question. And here’s the answer. A 2014 Honda Accord is better.

Why not? It’s a year newer and, thus, has more life in the warranty.

In construction, the front-wheel-drive, four-door midsize sedan has undergone minor cosmetic changes from one model year to the next. Otherwise it remains the same car with inside roominess, a quiet interior and a dependable powertrain.

Prices range from $21,995 for a four-cylinder LX to $33,345 for the Touring model.

In between are more four cylinder models, the $23,715 Sport, $24,880 EX, $28,870 EX-L and an EX-L V6. Prices have increased $275 from 2013 to 2014. The new Accords have been on dealer lots since August, but the hybrid model has been delayed until October.

The gasoline-powered 3.5-liter, 278-horsepower V6 Touring model arrived as the test sedan and, since it is the most expensive Accord, standard fare included leather trim, 360-watt upgrade high definition sound system, power moonroof, adaptive cruise control, pushbutton start and Michelin tires mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels. In matters of safety, the Touring model has a forward collision system but so does the EX-L V6. The Touring model differs in that instead of a small camera mounted at top of the front windshield to detect the presence of vehicles in front, it has a radar system mounted in the front grille. Such are the nuances of top-of-theline models.

Honda excels in certain areas, one of them interior layout of instrumentation, climate and sound controls, information gauges, storage bins and cup holders. An example of ergonomics is a simple hooded (protection against sun glare) eight-inch screen centered on the dashboard. The screen, besides displaying sound and climate information, shows what is behind the vehicle when backing up (multi-angle) and, on the tested Touring model, what is coming up on the side of the car when making a right-hand turn. This means traffic or bicyclists coming up fast on the right can be seen before disaster has to strike. A tiny camera in the passenger side power exterior mirror automatically activates when a right hand turn is signaled.

The 3.5-liter, 278-horsepower V engine in the Touring model of the 2014 Honda Accord is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Accord’s ride is average and depends on a traditional suspension system of struts in front and multilinks in the rear. Superb insulation keeps road and engine noise to a minimum. Brakes are discs, front and rear. Its turning circle of 38.1 feet is the norm for cars in this midsize range.

In terms of space, the Accord provides good legroom in front and the rear. In the front, legroom is 42.5 inches or close to that of a full-size sedan. In the rear, it is officially 38.5 inches. The rear bench seat has a pulldown armrest with cupholders.

With 15.5 cubic feet of lighted storage space, Honda has expanded the Accord’s trunk to keep up with the competition in the midsize sedan market.

During the test week, in evenly split country and city driving, average fuel consumption was 29.8 miles per gallon with two persons aboard . Unleaded regular fuel can be used in the 17.2-gallon tank.

Niceties with the tested Accord includ-

ed dual zone climate control, a navigation system with voice recognition and up-todate traffic information, power windows with automatic up and down in front, lighted leather-class steering wheel to see the cruise controls, compass, exterior temperature indicator, self-dimming rear view mirror and backlit gauges. The power front seats are heated. The seven-speaker sound system serves AM-FM-XM satellite radio, compact disc player, a hard disc drive with 16 gigabyte storage capacity, Pandora compatibility, USB audio interface, and MP3 auxiliary interface.

Other standard fare includes the onetouch power moonroof with tilt feature, remote entry, smart entry system, variable intermittent wipers, LED headlights with automatic on and off, LED brake lights, hood struts, chrome door handles, body-color heated power side mirrors with integrated turn indicators, dual chrome exhaust tips, fog lights in front and floor mats for the two rows of seating.

Besides airbags in front, front sides and overhead for two rows, standard Accord safety fare includes traction and stability controls, a four-wheel antilock braking system and anchors and tethers for child seats.

The forward collision warning system via radar detects the presence of vehicles in front. If a collision is imminent, the

system has visual and audible alerts. It is up to the driver to avoid the collision.

The braking system automatically assists in emergencies and distributes stopping force among the four wheels. It depends on how much load each wheel is bearing.

The ABS pulses the brakes so they do not lock up.

The tested Touring model also has a lane departure warning. A small camera mounted at the top of the windshield tracks lane markings on road. Visual alerts will light up on the driver’s instrument panel if the camera detects the car crossing a white or yellow line. An audible warning also sounds. The system is good at detecting lane drift or departure. It also can be annoying and can be turned off, which it was for the most part of the test week.

A tire pressure monitoring system alerts the driver if a tire is significantly low. Underinflated tires impair safety and reduce fuel economy.

The Accord has been around since 1976 with few consumer complaints. It was the first car to be produced by a Japanese manufacturer in the United States. Today the plant at Marysville, Ohio, still assembles the Accord.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with powertrain coverage for five years or 60,000 miles.

By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now “Handling the Truth: On the Writing of Memoir” by National Book Award finalist Beth Kephart may seem targeted to the writer of memoir. But the subtitle is more encompassing. We are right to expand the scope of the book’s target market to include all students of memoir. Any fan – writer or reader – is going to appreciate “Handling the Truth,” where many of our questions are addressed.

A second bit of business to take care of: Though there are harsh critics of the so-called memoir glut (Neil Genzlinger, writing in the New York Times Book Review, decried this “absurdly bloated genre”), the numbers and the passion of memoir readers win out. Good memoirs are personal and therefore embraceable, unforgettable, instructive, enlightening, often beautifully written and, therefore, works of literary art. Bad memoirs, writes Kephart, can commit any number of errors from Me Speak to lack of reflection and understanding to vengeful.

Kephart, author of 17 books, five of which are memoirs, asks a couple of great questions: What do you, reader, expect of a memoir? What do you, writer of memoirs, expect of yourself as a writer? From this vantage point Kephart, who also teaches creative nonfiction at the University of Pennsylvania, launches in on her discussion. Grab a highlighter because she cites numerous memoirs you may want to read later.

In the book’s five main parts, Kephart covers definitions and cautions, raw material, writing, clarity and truth, and, finally, a valuable listing of good memoirs arranged by topic.

“Handling the Truth” gives us many ways to think about memoirs.

For example, it’s not easy to deliver an elevator speech about a good memoir.

“What readers want is meaning,” writes Kephart. “They want a story so rich, complex, thought through, and learned from that it can’t, in fact, be revealed by a headline or two; it can’t be satisfactorily summarized.” Among the ways Kephart characterizes memoir: it imparts understanding; it’s a work of art; “first and foremost a meditation and a quest”; “active, alert, not lazy.”

“Handling the Truth: On the Writing of Memoir” is written by Beth Kephart.

Not all memoirists speak to all people. But if the voice is true and authentic, Kephart says, “then it is likely a voice we will trust. A voice contains tone, mood and attitude.” But be careful not to mistake attitude for bravado, distance from authenticity or anger.

These are more likely tirades lacking in comprehension and little connection to a greater world where humanity and meaning reside.

Memoir, she says, bears witness.

Memoir is also “the work of thieves.”

There are consequences. “Memoir writers have no control over how their cast of characters ... will feel about what has taken up residency on your page.” Memoir is grand larceny.

Kephart keeps notebooks, studies conversation, saves dialogue. “Train your ear to the habit of speech,” she says.

Kephart contacts those in her books and confirms the accuracy of her material. She also implores writers to practice empathy with those they use in their writing. It stops you from hurting the people who are essential to your story. To not do so, she warns, is to corrupt, if not doom, the book.

Research is another tool for broadening scope and insight. Without it, she says, you could be perceived as a

“narcissistic bore.”

It is not always possible for a memoirist to be accurate. If their topic is addiction, most likely there’s a lot they can’t remember. The same is true for mental illness. Memory is fallible and concessions must be made. Sometimes memoirists warn in advance of the limitations of recall, as Dorothy Allison does in “Two or Three Things I Know for Sure.” Though “truth is your obsession,” memoirists are writers and storytellers. I’ve heard David Sedaris admit he embellishes his stories, sometimes heavily. And Orhan Pamuk, who wrote the acclaimed “Istanbul,” likes to exaggerate.

Kephart is a natural born teacher.

She writes with a certain style that can, at times, evoke a squirm. She’s writing creative prose primarily for writers, which sometimes leads her to “peacocking” – displaying her stuff. She does so with tremendous style, nonetheless.

My own current memoir, written in the present tense, seems to have to work hard to express meaning. I learned why when reading Kephart.

Present tense is emotive and experiential. Past tense sets a sturdier stage for cognition and consideration. It’s where you “put knowing over feeling.” Tense is a hard choice, but many authors move back and forth. Another thing memoirs are free to do is get experimental.

One day on the train Kephart encounters a student who asks her what she does. She tells him, eventually, that she’s written five memoirs. “Five?” he asks. “Isn’t five a lot? I mean, how much have you lived?” It’s a funny story, but it also points out what we don’t always understand about memoir.

It’s just one more way, in literature, to get at truth. You don’t need big bad tragedies to do this, just a story, rich in detail and demonstrating an active search for understandings we can all appreciate.

Research is uncovering the ways the brain remembers Dear Doctor K: How do our brains create memories? Are our memories stored in some sort of “memory bank”?

Dear Reader: A memory is not a single entity, like a book on a shelf. It is more like a cloth that weaves together multiple facets of sensory, emotional and factual information.

Different areas of the brain process and store different aspects of a memory. For example, when you learned a song – “The Star-Spangled Banner,” say – you stored the words in a different region of your brain from where you stored the song’s melody. If you associate “The Star-Spangled Banner” with an image of the American flag, that memory might be stored in the visual processing area of the brain. Your memories are thus intricately broken down and cross-referenced. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration showing the different areas of the brain and the functions they control.)

But how does the information you encounter get filed away?

Stage 1: Acquisition. When you learn new information, it first takes the form of temporary pathways of nerve cell activity in the brain. This is short-term memory.

The memories that endure are those that were encoded most completely in the first place – the information that you paid the closest attention to when you learned it. Memories that involve multiple senses as well as emotions are more likely to be retained.

You probably remember clearly what you were doing when you heard about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, for example. You probably remember who else was with you, where you were, the first picture you saw of the twin towers. That’s because the emotional charge of learning that our country had been attacked caused you to store everything about that moment in your memory.

But you probably have no idea what you were doing exactly 24 hours before and 24 hours after you heard about the 9/11 attacks.

Stage 2: Consolidation. For short-term memory to become long-term memory, the initial neuronal pathways must be strengthened. When an event is emotionally charged, it is more likely to become part of long-term

memory. Once a memory is established (consolidated), it is stored in areas of the cerebral cortex.

That’s the large, domed outer layer of the brain.

Stage 3: Retrieval. Memories are stored in the brain as unique patterns of nerve cell activation.

When you’re not thinking about a memory, the pattern is inactive.

When you want to recall a memory, your brain must reactivate the pattern. How long this takes depends on how familiar you are with the information you’re looking for.

Knowledge about the different types of memory, and where in the brain they are housed, has come from research. The next frontier is learning how memories are stored. What brain chemicals are involved in receiving, consolidating and retrieving a memory? In the past 30 years, and particularly in the past 10 years, brain scientists have begun to understand that mystery.

And, fortunately, when they discover something they write it down and publish it – in case they forget it themselves.

Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend, Drew, and I are both 18, and we graduated from high school in June. Two weeks ago, we attended my best friend’s birthday party.

It was a big deal held at her house.

The theme of the party was, “Now I can vote.” The party started at 7 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m. A lot of her family and friends showed up early, but we were there from 9 p.m. until closing time.

There were lots of snacks and cold soft drinks available to all of the guests. But there were also a couple of kegs of beer available with a sign posted, “You must be at least 21 to drink beer” on the kegs.

Since no one was checking IDs, Drew helped himself to two glasses of beer about half an hour before we left.

When Drew drove me home he came into our house. That was unfortunate because my dad smelled alcohol on his breath. He asked Drew if he had been drinking, and Drew told him that he had had a couple of beers. This made my father furious. He called Drew’s father and told him what had happened and suggested that Drew not drive his car home to his house. Drew then talked to his dad and was told to stay put. His dad and brother came and took Drew and his car home.

Now we are both in big trouble. Drew’s dad took away his car, and I can’t go out with him for a month. Be honest, Dr. Wallace, don’t you think my father overreacted?

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace alcohol. Driving skills are diminished even after just one drink. The National Safety Council has reported that, on average, eight teens die in alcohol-related automobile crashes every day, and nearly 40 percent of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol consumption. Your father was 100 percent correct in the way he handled this situation. And those who served alcohol at a teen’s birthday party were in serious error.

The punishment was severe, but I am sure that this “mistake” won’t happen again!

Dr. Wallace: I am the principal of a middle school located in Cleveland, Ohio. The teachers and students want to start a “reward program” for attendance, discipline and grades.

I had them vote on this on the last day of school.

The results showed that 90 percent of the students and 75 percent of the teachers favored the reward program. I’m really not in favor of it.

I’d like your opinion, knowing that you are a former high school principal. – Principal, Cleveland, Ohio Dear Principal: Many school districts have gone to such a program with good success. The rewards should be related to school activities, such as free T-shirts with the school name and logo, free yearbooks, free lunches, priority parking for a month, etc.

Dear Abby: My father admitted to having an affair a few years ago.

At the time, my mother was very upset and threatened to leave, but somehow they worked it out. However, he is still seeing this woman.

They talk on the phone for hours, and he visits her house frequently, leaving my mother alone for extended periods of time.

When I ask my mother why they are still in contact, she doesn’t want to talk about it, and my father seems to think he isn’t doing anything wrong. West leads his fourth-highest diamond, and East puts up the 10.

What is the right line of play for declarer?

The auction is a straightforward Stayman sequence, with South’s two-spade rebid denying four hearts.

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond (given the first trick) and four clubs. For the ninth winner, it looks so natural to take the spade finesse. But when it loses (as it is bound to do in a bridge lesson or newspaper column), East returns a diamond and the defenders take five tricks: one spade and four diamonds.

South has to establish a ninth trick without letting East on lead.

So declarer must play on hearts.

He leads a club to the dummy, then runs the heart jack through East. Here, the finesse wins and South has his ninth winner. But even if the finesse had lost, West could not lead another diamond without conceding an extra trick to South.

Always think about the danger hand – the opponent you do not want on lead.
