In college, I took a marathon training class that began in the fall. The perfect September weather and scenery helped jump-start my eight-month training plan. Led by our professor, an Olympic marathoner, I completed the 26.2-mile race as my Marathon Training 262 final in the spring.

Batavia field plan draws support, opposition

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A proposed $13.4 million plan to improve the athletic fields at Batavia High School has become controversial.

The proposed master plan for the fields has both its supporters and its detractors.

School board members in July approved the improvements, which include $4.5 million for the high school’s football stadium.

That cost includes the installation of a synthetic turf field and improvements, such as boosting bleacher seating to 2,500 people from its current capacity of 1,500, a press box, a scoreboard and stadium lighting.

Also included in the plan is $4.2 million for the installation of a multi-use synthetic turf field; $1.5 million for a new maintenance garage/ storage facility; improvements to both the varsity and junior varsity baseball fields; and tennis court lighting.

The plan was developed after meetings with groups that use the athletic fields, school district administration, maintenance staff and school board members. Mike Popela, president of Batavia Youth Football, is a strong supporter of the plan.

Popela said the improvements would allow the 500-member league to use the fields.

“Right now, there is not enough room,” Popela said.

“We use Prairie Path Park, which is not designated for athletics. We do the best we can. A field that is designed for sports is much safer than a park.”

Popela said the idea is to raise funds to pay for the athletic field improvements and take the burden off of taxpayers. Batavia Youth Football is one of several groups that helped fund the master plan, which costs about $40,000.

The organization committed $5,000 toward the plan.

In addition, both the Batavia Bulldog Boosters and Batavia Music Buffs committed $10,000 each to the plan. Batavia School District 101 also had budgeted $20,000 to pay

Lisa Farley of the Batavia Bulldog Boosters said she is confident the organization will be successful in its continued fundraising. She said the club has raised $10,000 in the last month and a half for the proposed improvements.

Farley said having a synthetic football field would benefit other groups besides the football team. She noted that boys and girls soccer, lacrosse and marching band have to practice and compete off campus to keep the current fields in appropriate condition for games.

The items in the plan have not been prioritized. Batavia

High School Athletic Director Dave Andrews said he first would like to see proper safety fencing installed around the baseball field, along with the installation of synthetic turf for the football stadium.

“The lack of proper safety fencing is a major safety issue not only for the players, but also for the fans watching,” Andrews said.

He estimated the baseball field fencing would cost between $100,000 and $400,000, while installing a synthetic turf field for the football stadium would cost about $1 million. One of the biggest advantages of having a turf field, Andrews said, is that “you don’t get rained out.”

“You don’t have to cancel games because of rain,” he said. “As long as there is not lightning outside, you can play on the field.”

Andrews said there haven’t been any major improvements to the fields since Batavia High School was built in

“There’s only been maintenance done,” he said. “There never has been any rebuilding of the fields.”

Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel recently addressed school board members with concerns that artificial turf can get extremely hot on sunny days.

“The heat retention of synthetic turf can lead to heat stroke, dehydration, muscle cramping and fatigue for the athletes,” Keppel said.

Andrews said on hot, sunny days, the high school would take the same precautions as it did during the recent heat wave.

“We have heat protocols,” he said.

Keppel also believes the project needs to be prioritized.

“It is a very expensive project that I think was rushed though,” she said. “There’s no phases that have been approved. It is just a blanket approval. I want to see the

phases broken down and prioritized.”

As proposed, trees in an arboretum adjacent to the east practice field would be removed to make way for the improvements, which also has raised concerns. City arborist Frank Saupp has voiced opposition to the plans.

“It is my opinion that this site represents one of the best presentations of tree types to be found anywhere in the city of Batavia as it currently exists,” Saupp wrote in a letter to the school board.

Lydia Scott, community trees program manager for The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, also has voiced concerns.

“The diversity of the ages of trees in the Batavia arboretum is significant,” Scott wrote in a letter to the school board. “Some of the trees are 20 or more inches in diameter at breast height, indicating that they were planted many years ago – perhaps 40 or more years ago.”

Andrews said the idea would be to rededicate the trees throughout the entire outdoor stadium.

“We still want to respect the trees that are there,” he said. “We are trying to save as many as possible. If we can’t salvage one, we would replace it.”

Andrews said the trees would be planted along the walkways and throughout the footprint of the plan. He said the trees would be in a more high-profile area.

“Very few people now know the arboretum is there,” he said.

There is no timetable for the improvements to begin.

The school district plans to keep the community informed as the plans progress.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove residents had a chance to ask questions about the village Tuesday evening during an annual open house that showcased village maps, plans and financial information.

Residents such as Barb Mandel, who had never been to one of the village’s open houses, stopped in to find out when a proposed foot path might be constructed in her Prairie Glen subdivision. Village President Sean Michels said other residents asked about the proposed Route 47 and Interstate 88 interchange or the village’s cost-sharing program for replacing parkway trees infected with emerald ash borer.

Some residents also were given “keys” to the city, which were key-shaped flash drives filled with village information.

“We’ve been holding [the open house] this way for people to come in and ask questions about what’s going on.

It’s so intimidating to stand before the board and ask a question,” Michels said.

Trustee Kevin Geary said

some residents were curious about the village’s plans, including one woman with a special-needs son who was asking about one of the village’s long-term proposals for attracting more assistedliving facilities.

“It gives kind of a friendly face to the village,” he said.

“Some people don’t know where to start. … Every journey begins with a single step, and we just want to hear what the public is asking for.”

Michels said in the past, the village has hosted an open house in some form for the past 12 years, but they’ve traditionally gotten the biggest response hosting the open house during the week before a regular board meeting.

He said Tuesday he was happy to inform people that a few new businesses are interested in coming to Sugar Grove, as well as the prospect of a new 60-unit apartment complex just west of Walgreens.

Village officials also had a chance to show off new police squad cars and a new plow truck, he said.

“It’s something to bring people out,” Michels said.

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove officials Tuesday discussed an agreement that, if approved, would lead to implementing a full interchange at Route 47 and Interstate 88.

During a Committee of the Whole meeting, officials discussed an annexation agreement for property on I-88 and Route 47, along with an intergovernmental agreement and a letter of intent with the Illinois Department of Transportation, all of which is slated to be voted on at the next regular board meeting Oct. 1.

A public hearing also is planned Oct. 1 regarding the plans for the interchange.

With the upgrades, which could start as early as 2015, I-88 and Route 47 would allow vehicles to travel from Route 47 eastbound toward Chicago on the interstate highway.

limited to either exiting I-88 from the eastbound direction or entering I-88 headed westbound. In that, the interchange is distinct, became it is one of only two interchanges of its kind – limiting vehicles to westbound maneuvers – on I-88.

Village officials anticipate that the first engineering phase of the $20 million project will cost about $735,000. IDOT has committed to funding up to $4,925,000 of the project,

which is expected to be finished by fiscal 2019. Aside from IDOT, the village is partnering with the county and the Illinois Tollway to fund the project.

Village President Sean Michels said the Illinois Tollway will help fund about 60 percent of the project, which amounts to about $12 million. However, he said the village still is trying to find funding for a $3 million gap.

“We’re trying to work with the county to share the last $3 million,” he said.

“We’re asking IDOT to reconsider using some of the Prairie Parkway money to fund some of that $3 million.”

As part of the agreement, village officials also are considering annexing 792 acres into the village as part of the project.

“Phase one can go from 12 months to 36 months. That’s a long time to work on property that would be outside our village,” Michels said.

The organization – which aims to encourage youth involvement in artistic endeavors – is working to rebrand itself as the Kaneland Arts Initiative or KAI for short.

Executive Director Maria Dripps-Paulson said several factors prompted the name change, including a desire for a shorter name and to end confusion. The group had only one event – its namesake, the Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival – when it formed in 1998, she said.

But in recent years, she said, the organization has added other artistic endeavors, including theater productions, a performance series

ST. CHARLES – One of the region’s newest state legislators has indicated she will seek another term in Springfield.

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, announced Tuesday that she will place her name on the ballot in 2014 to secure four more years in office.

McConnaughay, a former Kane County Board chairman, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2012 to represent the newly created 33rd State Senate District. That district extends from the Tri-Cities on the south, through much of central and western Kane County, as well as portions of southern McHenry County.

A lottery conducted last November determined that McConnaughay would be among one-third of Illinois state senators designated to serve a twoyear term.

That lottery, which is

conducted every 10 years to accommodate legislative redistricting, slated McConnaughay – or any other person who would have occupied the 33rd District Senate seat – to then serve two four-year terms following the 2014 and 2018 elections.

State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, who represents the Karen McCo- 42nd State Senate District, nnaughay which includes North Aurora, also was selected by the lottery to serve a two-year term, with elections following in 2014 and 2018.

Holmes has launched her reelection campaign, as well.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, and state Sen. Mike Noland, D-Elgin, were among a third of Illinois state senators selected to serve two four-year terms, followed by a two-year term. Those seats will next be on the ballot in

Goncher seeks to succeed Hatcher for seat in 50th

Beth Goncher of Aurora has begun circulating nominating petitions to place her name on the ballot in the race to represent southwestern Kane County and northern Kendall County in the 50th House District.

Goncher, 43, a Republican, has worked for about a dozen years for state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, as his legislative and constituent services director.

Schmitz last week announced not seek re-election in the 49th House District after 16 years in Springfield.

Goncher becomes the first candidate to run in the Republican primary race to succeed retiring state Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville.

Goncher, who was raised in Aurora, noted her upbringing taught her the intricacies of running a business and instilled a commitment to community service, because her father worked as a private practice doctor.

Goncher also serves on the board of directors for the Compassion Foundation, an Aurora-based charity.

Goncher said her campaign will key in on several issues, including the need to reform state public employee pension systems and the need to reform Illinois’ state finances.

Maple Park program welcomes youths to police department for drop-in nights

an 8-year-old from Maple Park, was there along with her siblings. She was in the movie room, but it was more about chatting with friends, playing a few games or eating some popcorn. She said she’s been coming for months.

“They show a movie or two, you get free popcorn and you can mess around with your friends,” Skylar said. “I make a lot of friends here.”

Among others in her group at the party were twins Charlotte and Ben Martin, 11, Skylar’s siblings, and 10-year-old Dakota Huffnus. They would move from room to room with friends, sometimes playing hiding games or settling down to watch a few minutes of the cartoons playing on the screen.

Salisbury said Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta brought him the idea, and he and Brown were on board. Salibury works for the Montgomery Fire Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Both Salisbury and Brown are emergency medical technicians, and they said they enjoyed the task.

Despite the noise and the kids constantly on the move, neither lost his patience on Saturday. And though Salisbury must use a cane to get around – he lives with cerebral palsy – he said it’s not difficult for him and Brown to work as a team to keep track of the kids. And Salisbury said it’s definitely a two-person job.

Brown provided a tour, pointing out that he worked to paint the movie room in dark colors, with some light bulbs to provide illumination, giving it the feel of a theater. Movies are shown by a projector, with a screen that is more than 50 inches wide. In the hallway, there is entertainment at every corner, and there were kids at every station. Noise was a constant, but when the screaming got too intense or kids’ brisk pace turned to running, the whistles came out.

The sessions happen nearly every weekend, with rare exceptions. There is no cost.

Salisbury said there are rules – discipline, at times, is needed. If there’s any fighting, the youths are done for the night.

But mostly, he said, there will be a few hours of fun, and then the kids will go home happy.

Salisbury said the regulars have grown to trust him, and he has helped them talk about issues such as bullying. He said the experience feels special.

“I haven’t heard of other police departments that do this,” he said.

MAPLE PARK – Walking into the Maple Park Police Department on Saturday night felt like a journey to a kid’s birthday party.

There were youths shooting baskets at a mini-hoop. Others were playing a video game.

Some were playing foosball or munching on hot dogs. Even more children were going in and out of the “movie room,” an area that actually resembles a mini-movie theater.

Coordinators Josh Salisbury and Kevin Brown were wearing whistles around their necks as they kept busy in their quest to maintain order, and their whistles got good use.

It’s a typical weekend scene at the department, located at 302 Willow St. in Maple Park.

Friday and Saturday nights are drop-in nights for kids ages 7 and older. They are welcome from 6 to 9 p.m. in an effort to accomplish a couple of missions – to help youths have an enjoyable time at the police department and provide some weekend entertainment. The program is in its third year.

“Maple Park is a very small community, and there’s not much going on,” Salisbury said. “You would much rather they be in here.”

Keeping Waubonsee’s campuses safe While students at Waubonsee Community College and elsewhere are busy worrying about fitting in, finding just the right classes or finishing homework on time, there’s another group paying attention to an entirely different set of priorities.

For the most part, the work of this group remains invisible to students, but, when done well, it ensures that success at school is all students need to be thinking about.

This background work is generally covered under the very broad umbrella called public safety.

At Waubonsee, the public safety program includes emergency preparedness initiatives, Campus Police operations and security and risk mitigation activities.

One important initiative began nearly four years ago when the college’s board of trustees affirmed the safety of our students is best served

This decision led to the transformation from a basic security force to a credible, experienced and trusted police presence on campus.

Over the past few years, Waubonsee has taken several other steps to ensure safety for our students, faculty and visitors.

The college has upgraded its emergency notification systems, which now include public address speakers in each building, as well as a voice and text-capable alerting system.

We also implemented and refined a threat assessment and intervention program that allows college officials to receive reports about students or staff that may be

exhibiting troubling behavior.

The program then provides for a team of administrators, counselors and safety personnel to conduct an in-depth evaluation and implement a course of action.

The college continues its focus on safety through drills and training.

All of Waubonsee’s administrators are trained in the National Incident Management System so we can efficiently interact with other public safety partners if necessary.

Faculty and staff receive training in managing classrooms and common areas, and the college conducts routine drills and testing of our emergency procedures.

We also work to enhance safety throughout the community.

The Waubonsee Sugar Grove Campus is now recognized as a point-of-distribu-

tion site for medical emergencies and as a Red Cross emergency shelter.

Roadway safety will be enhanced with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s approval of a contract to install a traffic signal on the north entrance to the Sugar Grove Campus.

These are just a few examples of Waubonsee’s commitment to safety.

These efforts, along with many more, ensure students and staff can continue to focus on what’s really important to them when they come to Waubonsee – a vibrant teaching and learning environment where futures take shape.

Police stopped Maurissa J. Daly-Hoare, 31, of the 200 block of South 15th Street, at about 12:26 a.m. after ob-

serving her green Volkswagen Passat repeatedly cross the center line along North Second Street in St. Charles, police reported.

Maurissa J. Daly-Hoare reportedly had Daly-Hoare glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.

She gave police another woman’s driver’s license and said she had two martinis at an establishment in downtown St. Charles, police reported.

Her car was towed from the scene, and she was brought to the police station for booking, during which police learned the ID wasn’t hers, police reported.

Police: Van followed student to school

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Police Department searched the area around Geneva Middle School North on Tuesday morning for a conversion van after a student reported being followed to school by someone driving such a vehicle.

The department canvassed the area for the vehicle, which was described as a light brown conversion van with a dark brown stripe down the middle.

“Nothing was found,” Geneva Police Patrol Operations Cmdr. Julie Nash said. “There was very limited information provided.”

The van’s driver did not speak to the student, Nash said.

Geneva School District 304 issued an alert following the reported incident and reminded parents to “please speak to your children and encourage them not to interact with strangers and to report any suspicious activity to a trusted adult. Immediate police contact at 911 is appropriate in these situations.”

Elburn Village Board approves committee

ELBURN – The Elburn Economic Development Committee became official Monday night, as the Village Board hammered out details defining the committee and then unanimously approved its members.

Also, the board approved plans for a new child-care facility – the Lighthouse Academy – which is targeting an October opening. And board members also continued to work out what messages might be appropriate to include in available space on the village’s water bills.

The Economic Development Committee action took place, with approval of the seven members appointed by Village President Dave Anderson.

The board previously showed strong support for both the committee and the members, but there had been issues with the language that spelled out who might serve on such a committee, which is being created to help promote business in the village. It is intended to work as an advisory commission to the board to help attract new businesses and retain current businesses.

As it previously was written, at least one appointee would not have been able to serve, as members would have had to be residents or representatives of a business in the village. That has been expanded to include those in Elburn’s comprehensive planning area.

The members are Bill Brauer of American Bank and Trust; Ryan Easter of Bob Jass Chevrolet; Dr. Harry “Duke” Krauspe, a local dentist; Joe Kryszak of JDW Institutional

Paper; Patrick Leach of Control Plus Inc.; CeCe Rocha of NBT Bank; and Annette Theobold of Paisano’s and Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill.

Trustee Bill Grabarek said the language could have been clearer, but that would have required a rewriting of the description and would have pushed back the formation of the group.

“It’s not something I want to fiddle with and delay this,” Grabarek said.

The board also unanimously approved plans for the Lighthouse Academy, which will take over a spot previously occupied by a similar business. It will be at 153 Wright St. in Elburn. Because of how long the building had been unoccupied, zoning approval was needed.

The board unanimously approved the request. Business owner Shannen Flores was in attendance, and she said she hopes to open in October.

At a Committee of the Whole meeting that followed the Village Board meeting, trustees talked about using space on bills, such as water and sewer bills, to offer information, facts or promotion of upcoming events. Grabarek has been supplying facts on recent bills. Village Administrator Erin Willret said there is space on the bills for up to 800 characters of information. Using any more than that could cost hundreds of dollars each month.

There wasn’t support for anything that would cost money, and officials said they would consider using the available space for messages. They would, however, want to be certain such messages would be appropriate.

Fundraiser planned for Maple Park native in coma

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – A fundraiser is planned to help 2004 Kaneville High School graduate Becky Nelson “bounce back” from a hit-and-run accident that put her in a coma.

Nelson’s aunt, Anne Carson, said Nelson has been at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago since mid-August and she has started to follow movements, seems to recognize voices and is starting to speak a little bit.

She said Nelson, who was living in the Cayman Islands at the time, was struck in a hit-and-run accident July 1, and was flown to Jackson

Buchanan said while the fundraiser still is being planned, she hopes to have a variety of bands playing all day, as well as food, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

Several community groups have been contacted to participate, she said.

Carson said her niece’s workplace in the Cayman Islands was supposed to be covering her health insurance, but wasn’t for a reason that’s unclear to the family.

She said to help pay for medi-

cal costs, the family is trying to get Medicaid approval.

“We really don’t know for certain what’s being covered so far,” Carson said.

Carson said the family has received a lot of support from the community since the accident, including a group that is selling Becky Nelson wristbands in support of her recovery.

She said the family also has been working with Buchanan on the October fundraiser.

“This isn’t just a band doing a show,” Buchanan said about the fundraiser, which will be held rain or shine.

“The Kaneville community stepped up and donated a place.”

• A man, 27, of the 400 block of Conley Drive, Elburn, told police on Aug. 27 that he believed he had been the victim of check fraud. He said he had agreed to participate in the Income Booster Mystery Shopper Group program. To begin the program, he was issued a check for $1,490 and was told to cash it.

He was to keep $350 for himself, use a portion of the check to purchase items with, and then wire $990 to someone in New York. He cashed the check Aug. 13 and wired the money the same day. On Aug. 19, he was told by a money transfer company that the check was fraudulent, and he owed $1,515. The man then filed a claim with the bank and notified police.

• Police are investigating two burglaries at restaurants near the corner of Route 38 and Route 47 in Elburn during the overnight hours of Sept. 3 and 4. In the first, at a pizza restaurant in the 100 block of East Route 38, police said owners told them someone had broken into the restaurant through the front door and took about $15,000 from a cash drawer in the restaurant’s office.

Later that night, police said someone broke into a restaurant in the 100 block of Valley Drive through the locked back door, taking $100 and an Apple iPad. Both incidents were reported to police on Sept. 4.

• A man, 18, of the 2000 block of Wagner Road, Batavia, told police he believed someone had taken his wallet while he was attending a wake at a funeral home in the 100 block of West Pierce Street, Elburn, on Sept. 5.

She also was issued two village ordinance violation citations for possession of more than 2.5 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

STC commission to Batavia residents could see hold first hearing increase in electric rates on license violation

Monday, a managing partner of The Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, requested a formal hearing on an allegation that on Aug. 16 patrons left the premises while in possession of an alcoholic beverage.

According to a St. Charles Police Department report, a man and a woman in their early 20s left The Filling Station with three drinks and tried to hide them from a police officer monitoring the area.

The officer asked the couple whether they concealed the drinks as they left The Filling Station. Although the man reportedly hid his in his

shirt, he told police nobody was watching the patrons. “[He] told me several times that no one was watching and how he watched a couple people walk out with drinks in their hands,” the officer reported.

The man and woman were reportedly ticketed with having open alcohol in a public place.

Mayor Ray Rogina, who serves as liquor commissioner, asked Peter Milligan of The Filling Station if the description in the complaint was accurate.

Milligan said it was “pretty much accurate” but that circumstances exonerated him from responsibility. He pleaded not guilty.

Rogina said a hearing will be scheduled on the matter.

Because The Filling Station hasn’t had a violation in the last 12 months, it faces a maximum fine of $1,000, he said.

With President Obama’s bid for congressional support for a military strike against Syria on hold for the time being, members of the House and Senate can devote their attention to what was previously supposed to have been their priority for September – avoiding a potential political and economic train wreck over the federal government’s finances.

Specifically, Congress needs to fund the government after the current spending law expires Sept. 30, and it needs to raise the $16.7 trillion debt limit, which will be reached sometime in the second half of October, and which must be increased to avoid the possibility of a U.S. default.

Alas, these two pieces of what should be routine business have become entangled in the politics of Obamacare, which is to say the decreasingly comprehensible politics of the House Republican caucus. A sizable minority of GOP members insists on “defunding” the health care law before the major parts of it begin to take effect in January. According to a recent Congressional Research Service analysis, this is an operationally futile goal. It would be bad policy even if it were possible.

What’s more, it’s bad politics for the GOP to risk a government shutdown in pursuit of this chimera – a fact Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, recognizes but which has, so far, failed to sway his back-benchers. This is why Democrats are content, for now, to sit back and cheer on the Republicans’ internal feud. Also, that’s easier than countering the

Republicans’ anti-Obamacare crusade with realistic budget alternatives.

How this latest impasse plays out is anyone’s guess, although there are plausible scenarios under which Boehner can give the ultras in his caucus a chance to vote one more time against Obamacare, while engineering Democratic acquiescence in a short-term continuation of the current $988 billion annual spending rate. Such a result would avoid a partial government shutdown – for a few months.

The debt ceiling, too, probably can be finessed, as it has been in the past. Exactly how is admittedly difficult to predict given Obama’s insistence that raising it is not negotiable and Boehner’s seemingly incompatible insistence that he won’t increase Washington’s borrowing capacity except in return for progress on deficit reduction.

But a default would not be in either side’s political interest.

The only outcome no one expects is a “grand bargain,” or even a small one, that addresses the country’s accumulating fundamental problems. These include a budget sequester that indiscriminately weakens defense and key domestic programs, a long-term mismatch between planned entitlement-driven spending and expected tax revenue and the dysfunctional legislative process itself.

Washington may yet limp through another round of budgetary chaos – but only at the cost of postponing the people’s truly urgent business to an even more distant date in the uncertain future.

So it probably was fitting that Hawkins and the North Stars had to go the distance to defeat the Saints, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action Tuesday on North’s homecourt.

“We were trying to treat this game like it is any other game, and we needed to take care of business,” Hawkins said after her first win over the Saints. “I have so much respect for Jennie, that program and that school. They clearly have a tradition of winning, and we want to emulate that tradition, as well.”

“I think Lindsey does a phenomenal job,” Kull said of her former player. “She is a quality act. I am proud of her.

I am proud of what she has built. Yes, you love to win, but when they are not playing us, I’m rooting for her.

“North did a nice job. They are a very good team. They have a lot of different weapons. They deserved to win.”

The win on North’s “Volley for the Cure” night keeps the North Stars perfect, moving to 11-0 overall, 2-0 in the River. East falls to 12-4, 1-1.

“In a gym like this, with the young and inexperienced kids I have, I was very pleased with how we battled and won that game,” Kull said. “Every single time we step out [on the court], I see us making great strides.”

“Losing a game was not our plan,” Krage said. “We would have loved to win in two. But we are willing to fight, and we fought back.”

With momentum on its side, East took leads of 2-0, 4-2, 5-3 and 7-5 early in Game 3, but could not bury North, and a lot of that inability was caused by its own mistakes.

“The first eight points of the third game were our errors, missing three serves,” Kull said. “But that is what you live and die by in volleyball.”

Game 3 was tight all the way, with a kill by East’s Dana Voltolina tying the score at 14.

But North ran off the next five points, as Carroll had a kill and service winner and Claire Anderson a block-kill.

The Saints weren’t giving up, either. Voltolina and Meagan Smith responded with back-to-back kills to cut North’s lead to 19-17, and Mosquera’s kill cut the deficit to 20-19.

Krage kills gave the North Stars leads of 22-20 and 23-21, and the last of her 16 kills was the match winner.

“Senior leadership,” Hawkins said when asked what helped her team pull through in Game 3. “Seavey, Krage and Sydney Wohlert. They want this. They have been dreaming about this since they started here. They have been with me a long time.

They are some of the best senior leaders I’ve ever had.

“They dug deep and stayed calm. They did not let the atmosphere rattle them. They rely on each other. That is the biggest thing.”

Daley Krage backed up her sister with six kills, while Anderson and Taylor added four apiece.

Mosquera led East with 11 kills, while Megan Schildmeyer, Voltolina and Smith had nine each. Hughes added 21 digs and two aces.

“I was really proud of my kids,” Kull said. “They played very well. Everybody has said ‘This team is down’ or whatever, and we’re not.

We eliminate those errors [in Game 3], the young mistakes we made, we get that all done by end of the season and it’s going to get better.”

GENEVA – Delirious shouting, hugging and crying ensued Tuesday night after Batavia earned its first girls volleyball victory against Geneva since 2010.

Perhaps one of the few sets of dry eyes in the wake of the Bulldogs’ 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 win belonged to the husband of Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne, who rescheduled an optometrist appointment to be there.

Batavia trailed its Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival as late as 16-13 in Game 3 before staging one final rally. As the Bulldogs huddled together after each point – down 16-14, down 16-15, tied at 16, and then ahead by as much as 19-16 – the message had long since taken over.

Persevere.

“Just know that you’re going to fix it, whatever mistake you did. Or if you get the point, just know that you can do it again,” senior outside hitter Shea Stanley said. “You need to persevere the whole time. That’s been our goal since Day 1, just to persevere.

That’s our team goal, and just push through everything, no matter who we’re playing.”

Batavia (8-9, 1-1 UEC River) always totes extra emotion into its meetings with Geneva (8-4, 1-1), and vice-versa.

This time, the Vikings brought their highly touted younger talent, too. Grace Loberg, a 6-foot-2 freshman outside hitter, had 21 digs and 21 kills in one of the night’s many outstanding individual performances.

“That’s the highest [kills total] she’s got so far,” Geneva coach KC Johnsen said. “I bet it won’t be the highest she’ll ever have.”

Batavia’s ability to stand up to Loberg, sophomore Kyley Thompson (eight kills) and the rest of Geneva’s attack in Game 2 turned the tide. The Bulldogs, who grabbed their first lead of the game at 9-8, started toward that proposition by serving the Vikings out of system.

Kelsey Wicinski contributed 48 digs – believed to be a school record – but she also handled her share of second hits.

That left Batavia senior Shea Thayer (career-high seven blocks) waiting at the net with added anticipation alongside Maddy Astling and Jancy Lundberg, who contributed five blocks apiece.

“It’s watching the outside hitter and knowing where she hits and just keeping that press up and holding strong,” said Astling, a sophomore middle hitter who also offered some levity.

and Thayer never had defeated Geneva in their three-year varsity careers, Astling improved to 2-0 lifetime against Geneva. She and Batavia’s freshman “A” team were victorious in 2012.

“Yeah,” Astling said, “I guess I’m used to it.”

Trippi-Payne, who wore a “Pack the Place” T-shirt from Batavia and Geneva’s 2010 regular season game to school Tuesday – the Bulldogs also defeated Geneva in regional play that fall – was equally keen on the quickness of the Vikings’ attack.

She devoted most of Monday’s practice to defense and getting younger players up to speed with new rotations as Batavia deals with injuries.

Sophomore defensive specialist Katelynn Fegan hadn’t played the right-back spot until this week.

As the teams traded rallies and crowd momentum, it was easy to simply sit back and watch. Stanley (11 kills) paced Batavia’s offense, but was

“It’s just a great atmosphere. It was a fun match. It was a shame we had to lose,” Johnsen said. “We played hard, they played hard. We made some great plays. They

made some great plays. So I don’t know. It’s a little early in the year – I guess it’s not too early anymore. We’re getting better. That’s what I’m excited about.”

The Bulldogs feel the same way about themselves.

“I’ve always said we have a lot of kids that have a lot of ability and can play different positions, and we were able to do that tonight,” Trippi-Payne said.

North’s Kurtz playing ‘with so much heart’ St. Charles North offensive tackle Chase Gianacakos is a fearsome dude at 6-foot-6, 288 pounds, but when it comes to supreme toughness, Gianacakos salutes the guy for whom he’s usually blocking.

Evan Kurtz, a senior running back, is winning many admirers this season with a prolific start to the season; He’s rushed for more than 200 yards in each of Evan Kurtz North’s past two games, a win against Plainfield Central and Friday’s overtime loss to St. Charles East.

“He puts all of his heart into everything, and you can really see it,” said Gianacakos, a Michigan State recruit. “Every time he runs the ball he wants to break it.

He wants to run it as hard as he can. You could see that last week considering his jersey was all ripped on top because he was running it so hard.”

The 6-2, 220-pound Kurtz carried a huge workload against the Saints, rushing 36 times for 224 yards. He had all three of North’s touchdown runs, including a 76-yarder early in the fourth quarter, and also played linebacker on defense.

“I’ve never had a running back that runs the way he does with heart every time he carries the ball,” Gianacakos said. “He cares so much about the team that he never wants to not gain yards. … He plays the game with so much heart that by end of the game he’s exhausted. I think he makes everyone better around him because we all want to be like him.”

North (1-2) faces visiting Elgin (0-3) on Friday, and the Maroons’ chances of slowing Kurtz’s motor seem dim.

Elgin has allowed 46 points or more in each of its three losses.

Mercury rising: Geneva basketball junior forward Nate Navigato will visit

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab Northern Illinois on Saturday, according to his AAU program, Mercury Elite.

Navigato also is expected to visit Illinois State, Wright State and South Dakota State, with Evansville, Northern Iowa, Northwestern, Oregon State and William & Mary among the other schools expressing interest, along with Illinois-Chicago, which has offered Navigato a scholarship.

In other Mercury Elite happenings, Wheaton Academy junior guard Josh Ruggles has been invited by a Spanish professional basketball league to compete in what is being billed as “the biggest 3-point contest in Europe.”

The Ruggles family is vetting the event with the NCAA to make sure there are no rules violations involved with competing before deciding where to accept the offer. Ruggles made national waves in early August when he drilled a record 135 out of 147 3-pointers in a 5-minute span. The video from that session was posted to YouTube and apparently even gained traction overseas.

Diagnosis delayed: Kaneland football tailback Jesse Balluff’s MRI, originally set for Tuesday, was pushed back to today, according to Knights coach Tom Fedderly.

Balluff suffered a knee injury in Friday’s win at Sterling. The senior rushed for 269 yards on 34 carries with five touchdowns in the Knights’ first two games before exiting the Sterling game early. He also is a quality receiving target for the Knights coming out of the backfield.

Foster, Leskun deliver Vikings decisive victory

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – All eyes were on the No. 2 doubles court, much to Geneva junior Shannon Foster’s chagrin.

Foster, playing alongside doubles partner Nicole Leskun, prefers the usual, low-key environs of No. 2 doubles. But with Tuesday’s conference dual match with rival Batavia tied at 3 and the No. 2 doubles match against Batavia’s Brooke LeFevre and Sydnee Unterberg the last match going, Foster and Leskun had center stage.

“No, I do not like everyone watching, so it was really tough for me,” Foster said. “I just thought about the feeling if we won for our entire team, and then it just got me through it.”

Foster and Leskun handled the pressure with aplomb, winning the only three-set match of the day, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to supply the Vikings’ girls tennis team a 4-3 victory. It was Batavia’s first conference dual meet defeat since joining the Upstate Eight Conference River in 2010 and first conference dual loss overall since 2008, snapping a 26-match conference winning streak, according to Batavia coach Brad Nelson.

Foster and Leskun faced a 5-4 deficit in the decisive third set after LeFevre held serve for the Bulldogs but the Vikings won the next three games to close the match, punctuated by Leskun’s overhand winner for the final point.

“It was really difficult,” said Leskun, a senior. “They were really good opponents. They both did really good. It was tight.”

Vikings coach Maureen Weiler was proud of the duo’s ability to withstand periods of momentum for Batavia.

“You could see they tensed up a little bit but they pulled it back together,” Weiler said.

nior, and they’ve been on varsity.”

Their win was Geneva’s lone doubles triumph but the Vikings (8-3, 3-0 UEC River) swept the three singles matches. Kirby Einck dominated Nora McClure at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, Grace Krueger handled Annie Maren at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Elizabeth Prendergast beat Megan Garvin at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

Krueger, a 5-foot-3 freshman, has been impressive early in her career, and said she’s benefited from battling Einck in practice.

“She’s a lot stronger than me, so it gives me a chance to play against people that are like that, and she gets to everything,” Krueger said.

“Playing against [opponents at No. 2 singles], I just try to work on my game, and with Kirby I also try to work on my game because I know it’s going to be hard to beat her.”

The Knights (7-8 overall, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) flirted with that milestone Monday before losing in three games against host DeKalb.

Ellie Dunn contributed 10 kills and 10 digs for Kaneland, with support from Kathy Nguyen (12 digs) and Vanessa Gould (seven kills).

Jenny Lubic (nine assists) and Hannah Nauert (eight) shined on the attack, while Riley Hannula contributed five blocks.

DANIEL DILEONARDI St. Charles East • Senior • Boys soccer Why he was selected: Scored three goals Thursday against Bartlett, his second hat trick of the season.

Having the two hat tricks in the first month of the season, how much does that accomplishment mean to you?

It’s nice to get off to a good start and get goals for the team.

A lot of the goals have been team goals and have been the result of plays that [were executed] with a purpose. … I’ve been fortunate enough to be the one to put [a lot of them] away.

Is there a certain type of shot

or type of goal that has been especially good to you so far?

I pride myself on being a fast player so I like getting through-balls from teammates behind me and running on to them, and depositing them into the side netting.

What’s it been like playing with your brother this year?

I haven’t played with him in competitive soccer before. The only time I’ve played with him since we’re different ages is baseball because baseball mixes ages. … It’s nice because he’s got good vision and he’s a hard worker and he looks to slot the ball through to me, so he gives me more chances.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be?

I’m going to say Andrew Shone.

He’s a smart guy and the subject I struggle with most is math for AP calculus, and he took it last year, so he could help me with it.

Briggs responding as leader, player Of all that has been good with the Bears and their 2-0 start, no star has shone brighter than Lance Briggs.

What more could a seven-time Pro Bowler entering his 11th season in the NFL have to prove? In Briggs’ case, he was told during the preseason that, in addition to again playing at a Pro Bowl level, he would be expected to take over the responsibilities of future Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher.

Those duties include getting the defensive play calls in from defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, getting each player on the defense lined up in the proper position and then calling out adjustments and moving players around during the pre-snap count as the offense’s plans unfold in front of him.

Urlacher had become so good at it, he was considered an extra coach on the field by Lovie Smith and the previous coaching staff. Briggs appears to have taken over without skipping a beat.

Without a copy of the Bears’ playbook, and the coaches sharing with me what coverage is called on every play, there’s no way I can say for sure what Briggs has or hasn’t done.

But I can say, in two games so far, we have seen absolutely no signs of confusion by the defense on the field. They appear to be positioned properly before every play and we haven’t seen any instances of players yakking at each other after

Asked to evaluate his own performance after the Vikings game, Briggs said, “There’s always room for growth. There were a couple of plays I could have changed.

There was a play that I changed during the game that even when I changed it, I thought maybe we could just run it anyway, but that’s just the way games go.

“I’m comfortable with it and as long as everybody is playing fast and everybody is OK, then I’m OK with it.”

Asked if any of his teammates have argued with him over calls, Briggs responded, “They better not or they’re going to have trouble.”

Briggs said this defense is just beginning to develop its own identity with him in charge.

“We’re getting better. Outside of some turnovers – that opening kickoff for a score and the turnover for a score – defensively, we look at it as that first game we gave up 21 points, [Sunday] we gave up 13. We’ve got to keep getting better that way.”

And how much of the defense’s performance to date is because of Briggs the linebacker? Through two games, Briggs is tied with Major Wright for the team lead in tackles with 17. He

leads the Bears with 12 solos, two tackles for loss and four passes defensed.

He has been particularly effective on several thirddown plays, even though the defense as a group needs improvement in that area.

When Briggs talks about playing fast, he clearly is taking it to heart personally.

One of the benefits of running the defense for Briggs is that he appears to be diagnosing plays much quicker and flashing to the ball. His tackles for a loss and passes defensed are proof.

There is a perception among some that Briggs is blitzing more this season, perhaps one of the differences between the Lovie Smith defense and Mel Tucker’s.

But, according to Briggs, “I’m not blitzing more. I just have opportunities to play faster.

We had a blitz [in the Vikings game] that was successful and it was me, but I think we’re actually blitzing less than in the past.”

Regardless of where Briggs and the rest of the defense goes from here, the most important test already has been passed. NOTEWORTHY BC’s Kuroskys better together Burlington Central senior Jenna Kurosky edged her sophomore sister, Josie, by three strokes, 36-39, Sept. 11 at the West Chicago Wildcat Invitational.

“She’s come close to me a few times,” Jenna Kurosky said. “I don’t really get bothered by it anymore.”

The Kuroskys began golfing around the same time six years ago, as their father, John, clamored for consistent playing partners through the family’s moves from New York to Canada to western Kane County.

Their mother, Sandy, used to play, too, but these days is happy following her daugthers around the course.

At St. Andrews in West Chicago last week, she offered updates to an inquiring Josie Kurosky about Jenna, who was a few holes ahead. Josie was the individual runner-up by scorecard playoff, as the Kuroskys proved to be Central’s top sister combination.

Haleigh Graham (junior) and Kendra Graham (sophomore) also are on the team.

“Oh yeah, it’s cool,” Josie Kurosky said. “The Grahams also don’t always like playing with each other, but I think me and Jenna do better that way.”

That occurs during Big Northern Conference East or other duals more often than at invitationals. Either way, the sisters provide perspective and a sounding board.

“Usually, when I have a not-so-good round, I think of how far I’ve come,” said Jenna Kurosky, a state qualifier as a junior. “Starting with having eights on par-3s in practice rounds to getting birdies.”

Knights pack together While Kaneland coach Mark Meyer isn’t shy about offering tutelage, he also knows younger players can only learn certain aspects of the team atmosphere from veterans.

Seniors Brody Kuhar and Matt Yonkovich are especially versed in the crisp pacing of each fall.

“The golf season is just packed from the very start,” Meyer said. “It’s always

like this, where we’ve got a bunch of tournaments at the beginning and we’ll have weeks like we do these past couple weeks” with multiple meets.

The lesson? Even if you turn in a bad round, there’s usually a chance to improve your confidence – and standing – within the next few days.

“It’s a good time for some of the guys who haven’t solidified a spot in the top six to prove that they deserve one of those spots and for the guys in the top four to really kind of pick up their game a little bit,” Meyer said.

Hugh Jackman: The script came to me about a year before [director] Denis Villeneuve came onboard, and I loved the script. It was the kind of script that could have become a more generic thriller. It could have veered that way.

But in the DNA of the script was a more ambitious thriller, not just one that grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat, but one that actually makes you contemplate and think for many days after.

HJ: As an actor, you do everything you can to convince yourself to pretend to be someone else, and dive into their shoes and their experience, and bring that to life.

Part of the research I did was looking into what REALLY happens in this situation. Like what happens on day one, on day two [after a kidnapping]? Do you print fliers? How do you react?

Girl can conquer shyness with help from others Dear Abby: I’m a 14-year-old girl who just started high school.

I started to notice boys when I was in middle school, and I’d like to start dating soon.

The problem is I’ve never had a close friend who was a boy, and the idea isn’t natural to me.

How can I ask a boy out if I don’t even grasp the concept of being friends with one? I’m frustrated over this, especially because I really like one particular guy.

The only advice I have been given is, “Get over your fear and just TALK to him.” This isn’t very helpful to me. I want to know how to get over my fear!

The first is I hope you realize how many girls and guys your age feel EXACTLY the same way you do. Social skills don’t come naturally to everyone – but they can be learned. And like any learned skill, they take practice.

The surest cure for shyness – which is the “fear” you are experiencing – is to forget about yourself and concentrate on the other person. Smile and intro-

Overcoming shyness takes practice, so don’t go after the boy you “really like” at first. Make a point of smiling and saying hello to everyone. It’s friendly, it’s welcoming.

Most young people go out in groups these days. So, if you and some friends plan to do something (and after you have been friendly and let the young man you like notice you), smile and ask if he’d like to come along.

If he’s shy, it’s a way of making HIM feel less self-conscious, too.

A school professional can help with teen’s ‘cutting’ Dr. Wallace: I’m writing to you because I trust you, and I really need your advice. I’m a good student. I’m in the 10th grade in an honors program. My parents have split. I live at home with my father. My mother left us six months ago to move across the country to live with relatives.

To make things worse, four days later, my boyfriend broke up with me. Add to this the torment of my peers making fun of me for no apparent reason.

There is a Chinese proverb that says, “To know the road ahead, ask those coming back.”

Wouldn’t it be nice at the bridge table to ask someone who has already played the deal where the missing cards are located? Sadly, the game doesn’t work that way. You must make your own decisions on which roads to take.

In this deal, South is in six hearts. After West leads the diamond king, what should declarer do?

North employed the Jacoby Forcing Raise. South’s three-diamond rebid showed a singleton (or void) in that suit. The next three calls were control-bids (cue-bids), after which South bid what he thought he could make.

Declarer has a potential loser in each black suit. He starts with 11 top tricks: two spades, six hearts, one diamond, one club and a diamond ruff in the South hand. So declarer needs either a third spade winner or a second club trick. However, which of those roads should he take?

To get a third spade trick requires a 3-3 break, which the mathematicians will tell you happens about one-third of the time. To obtain a second club winner requires finding East with at least one club honor.

Now the probability rises to approximately three-quarters.

The right road is clear. South should win with dummy’s diamond ace, draw trumps staying on the board and run the club 10. It loses to West’s queen, but when declarer returns to the dummy with a spade and takes a second club finesse, that works and he can claim.

Classic cars and pumpkins head to Lions Park in Oct. ELBURN – Looking for a way to enhance an already successful event, the Elburn Lions Club has added a kidfriendly twist to its annual car show.

On Oct. 6, the club will welcome decorated pumpkins to go with its collection of classic cars. Jeff Miller, the event’s chairman, said it was the result of a brainstorming session after last year’s car showcase at Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., Elburn.

“We have great facilities and great food,” he said.

“Let’s try to get some younger kids involved.”

The car show runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 at Lions Park, and participants in the pumpkin contest are invited to drop off their decorated pumpkins between 9 and 11 a.m.

The pumpkin event isn’t limited to youths, either.

Categories range from ages 3 to 5 to adult.

Pumpkins will be displayed at the park during the car show, and voting starts at noon.

There are rules. Pumpkins must not be carved or hollowed out. They can be painted, or items can be pinned or glued to the pumpkins.

Each entry must have a title. Winners can get prizes, including admission to Kuiper’s Family Farm, a dozen doughnuts or tickets

The Elburn Village Board on Monday night approved plans for the annual Veterans Day parade, which is set for 11 a.m. Nov. 11. The parade starts at the Elburn American Legion, 112 N. Main St., Elburn.

Motorcycle runs in Elburn Knuckleheads Tavern, 108 E. North St. in Elburn, will host two charitable motorcycle runs in October. The plans were approved Monday night by the Village Board.

On Oct. 6, the tavern will host the Rolling Thunder POW/MIA run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be on North Street, from Route 47 to First Street, and that stretch of road will be closed during that period.

On Oct. 13, the tavern will host the DuKane Abate Toy Run, which will result in the same stretch of road being closed, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Providing a draw for kids is another way the Lions Club embraced the challenge of putting on a car show on a Sunday during football season.

And, Miller said, there’s no excuses for football fans to skip the event either. There will be TVs showing football in the clubhouse, so those interested in watching the Bears play the New Orleans Saints at noon can do so.

The car show itself has been a draw, and Miller said a special feature is the “best of the best” class, which seeks to attract those who have won other top car show competitions.

He said there were more than 200 cars at last year’s event, and the club is aiming to reach the 300-car mark. He said those who come for the cars won’t be disappointed.

“There are definitely some outstanding vehicles,” he said. “It’s not uncommon for some of those cars to be worth well over $100,000.”

Harter Middle School offered a Jump Start course in summer school aimed at helping incoming 6th grade students and parents ease their anxiety about starting middle school. Approximately 60 incoming 6th graders attended the class that ran from August 5th-August 16th for an hour each morning. The students participated in a wide variety of activities related to the operations and procedures of a typical student’s day. After completing a building scavenger hunt, the students spent 2-3 days reviewing their summer reading book. They also spent time practicing their daily routines. These lucky students received their actual schedules and locker assignments a day before other HMS students. Students were also allowed to purchase PE clothes and check-out math software before their fellow classmates that did not enroll in the Jump Start program.

The students received practice for over a week opening their locker which was identified as the top fear of incoming 6th grade students. The students were also able to log into the Kaneland network, Edmodo and Konnect. The students’ excitement grew daily as they became more adjusted to the typical Harter Middle School day. Jump Start participants were much more prepared and comfortable starting the new school year.
