He stopped by The Office in St. Charles to watch a friend’s band, the Andy Schlinder Duo, on Saturday afternoon as the city celebrated its second annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend.

The St. Charles Jazz Weekend is put on in association with the St. Charles Arts Council All-City, All-Arts Event – Charlie’s Center for the Arts – All Of The Arts, All Over Town.

“It’s great that St. Charles is doing this,” Stelton said. “I want to see more jazz being showcased.”

Andy Schlinder, who played a rare tenor saxophone from 1932 during his performance on Saturday, played with guitarist Kevin Brown and an occasional stand-in, eighth-grader Sam Schatz, who played the trombone. Schlinder said he always jumps at the chance to include younger players in performances.

“That’s part of the jazz tradition – letting younger players in,” he said.

St. Charles, said he was part of last year’s inaugural St. Charles Jazz Weekend and noted that the festival has since grown.

The number of venues grew from four to eight between this year and last year, and 14 performances were scheduled at various downtown restaurants from Thursday through Sunday.

“I think it’s been blossom-

ing,” he said, adding that he would like to see the festival expanded to Lincoln Park in the future. “I like the restaurant idea. There are a lot more performers this year.”

Schlinder said he was particularly excited to see Chicago-born and Grammy-award winning saxophonist, Frank Catalano, on this year’s list of performers. He said Catalano’s performances, paired

with the fact that the St. Charles Jazz Weekend was advertised in Chicago Jazz Magazine, shows that the festival seems to be gaining credibility and momentum.

Stelton, who plays in a band called Jazz Vertigo, said Catalano is a “top-shelf” Chicago artist.

“They drew some good talent to the area,” Stelton said.

“I hope they keep it up.”

Illinois Secretary of State to hold drawing contest

Traffic to shift on Orchard Bridge on Wednesday

Illinois Secretary of Secretary of State Jesse White has announced a statewide poster-coloring contest for firstand second-grade students, addressing the importance of using child-passenger safety seats from birth to 8 years old.

The winning drawings will be featured on a poster that will be distributed statewide.

The Secretary of State’s office will be taking contest submissions statewide until Dec. 16.

NORTH AURORA – Northbound traffic on the Orchard Road Bridge over Interstate 88 will be moved to the center lanes from Wednesday to Sept. 25, weather permitting, to allow crews access to work on the

northbound approach of the bridge.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction of Orchard Road during this portion of the project. The on and off ramps to/from I-88 will remain open, but motorists might experience delays be-

cause of the work on the bridge, between Sullivan Road and Oak Street, in North Aurora.

THE CREDIT HOUR PUSH ECC launches campaign after inding link between credit hours, degree completion

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Eighteen-yearold Austin Rakow initially planned to take nine credit hours during his first semester at Elgin Community College this fall.

But when college staff told him he wouldn’t be considered a full-time pupil, the premed student signed up for an additional class, bumping his course load to 13 credit hours.

Next semester, he plans to take 12 credit hours, bringing his first-year total to 25.

Elgin Community College is hoping more students will follow Rakow’s lead. It launched “The 20-in-1 Campaign” this fall after an analysis found that students who complete 20 credit hours in their first year are five times more likely to complete degrees or certificates than students who do not.

“That is huge,” said Amybeth Maurer, director of orientation and student life.

Mary Perkins, director of student and academic effectiveness, said the finding was discovered during a comprehensive analysis of student success. Of the key milestones the analysis considered, nothing compared to the statistic regarding the 20 credit hours, she said.

It was “really the one that smacked you in the face,” Perkins said.

ECC has yet to determine why the 20-credit threshold is important to student success, Perkins said, noting the analysis did not touch on that.

But, she said the findings mirrored results of national studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency reported statistics on credit hours in a 2006 report on degree completion from high school through college.

“Earning less than 20 credits in the first calendar year following postsecondary entry is a distinct drag on degree completion,” according to the report. “… Falling below the 20-credit thresh-

ECC is working to educate students about the importance of completing 20 credit hours in their first year.

“This is too good not to share,” Maurer said of the statistic, noting it could motivate students to boost their credit hours from part time to full time.

ECC has distributed items

such as T-shirts and window clings, is planning workshops for students and has partnered with honor society Phi Theta Kappa to promote the statistic and to help students complete 20 credit hours, Maurer said.

Rakow, who learned of the 20-in-1 initiative through Phi Theta Kappa, said the honor society gave him a pamphlet listing 20 tips for college success. Tips include forming a study group, engaging in campus life and actively participating in class.

“I find them helpful,” he said.

ECC recognizes that com-

pleting 20 credit hours in a single year isn’t feasible for every student, Perkins said.

She said that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to complete their degree.

“What it really tells us is students that have other competing life responsibilities have more challenges along the way,” she said.

Maurer said that for parttime students, ECC encourages them to look at their options so they can take the maximum among of credit hours possible.

“The more you are in college,” she said, “the more of a college mindset you have.”

STC Liquor Control Committee recommends to end Commission split on red-light camera program Monday drive-thru request ST. CHARLES

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A liquor store’s request to open a drive-thru site received split reaction Monday from the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission.

“I think we’re sending the wrong message to the city of St. Charles if we’re allowing a drive-up window in our community,” 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis said.

Lundeen Liquors is seeking approval to use 1315 W. Main St., St. Charles, as a store with a drive-up window.

David and Julie Lundeen said they have operated a liquor store with a drive-thru lane for nine years in Sycamore.

A liquor store having a pick-up window is no different than a fast-food restaurant or pharmacy having a drive-thru lane, Julie Lundeen said.

Customers want convenience, she said.

“It is simply the nature of our society of how we want to shop,” she said, adding that drive-thru customers include the elderly, the disabled and mothers with children in car seats.

Lewis disagreed.

“It is different,” she said.

“It’s a different product.”

Commission member Chuck Amenta asked how the store would make sure alcohol wasn’t sold to motorists already intoxicated.

With the pick-up window, Julie Lundeen said, the employees are even closer to the customers.

They can judge customers’ level of intoxication by their appearance, speech and smell, she said.

“It’s pretty obvious when someone is intoxicated beyond [seeing how they are] walking,” Julie Lundeen said.

Amenta supported the request while Lewis and 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner did not.

Mayor Ray Rogina, who also favored the request, said he will tell the St. Charles City Council how the commission voted.

The commission did, however, reach consensus on another topic: Rogina’s proposal for late-night permits for liquor licenses. Under his proposal, the city would issue liquor licenses requiring establishments to close at midnight but would also offer 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. closing permits for a fee. The permits would be reviewed annually, he said.

The commission directed staff to develop criteria outlining how the City Council could reduce a permit from its existing closing time to an earlier hour.

The St. Charles Government Operations Committee on Monday unanimously recommended approval to let the contract with Redflex Systems expire Monday.

The camera monitors the northbound section of the intersection.

St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin said discontinuing the program is in the

city’s best interest.

The program – which began in September 2008 – was designed to be cost-neutral, he said, but fines from the violations never offset the costs for the equipment and the staff time involved in processing the violations.

“We’ve never made a penny,” Lamkin said.

According to a report he submitted to the committee, the camera recorded 353 verified violations in its first full year of activation.

So far this year, he reported, there have been 167.

But the red-light camera was successful in some respects, he said.

“It did reduce crashes, yes,” said Lamkin, noting that intersection had been among the top accident sites in the city.

In the year before activation, he reported, the intersection saw 15 crashes. With the red-light camera, there were eight crashes in 2009; nine in 2010; five in 2011; nine in 2012; and five so far this year, according to his report.

Lamkin said he hopes those levels will be maintained after the camera is disabled.

The police department will continue to monitor the intersection, he said.

BATAVIA – An agreement has been reached with property owners who recently voiced concerns about a special service area being proposed to fund the Batavia MainStreet organization.

“We believe we have come to terms with the property owners on all the issues that they were concerned about,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening told aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting.

Property owner John Pitz thanked city officials for addressing the concerns.

“Everybody focused on what was best for Batavia,” Pitz said. “A sincere thanks to everyone. It couldn’t have worked out better.”

A special service area to fund Batavia MainStreet was established in November 2008, but that special service area expires in November.

The new special service area would cover the same area as the existing one.

“The original SSA created a situation where property owners overpaid into the tax increment financing district due to the tax ‘increment’ be-

ing calculated with the SSA levy added,” Buening said in a memo to city officials.

“This created an unintended surplus into the TIF by approximately $108,000 over the five-year SSA period.”

Buening said the surplus was caused because of the way the County Tax Extension office levies the tax on properties that are both in a TIF District and an SSA per state assessment requirements.

In addressing the concerns, staff suggested a number of changes, including: • No levy of special service taxes for the first 2½ years to pay down the TIF “overage” created with the SSA/TIF overlap.

• Payment of the “overage” on a yearly basis rather than a lump sum.

• Property owners in the special service area would submit an annual review evaluating the performance of Batavia MainStreet during the past year.

• Properties used for owner occupied residential use would be eligible for a refund of the property taxes paid.

• The special service area would terminate in five years with no renewal.

This event is well be held to raise awareness and funds to support Literacy At The Well in South Sudan.

Lions Club International has made a 10-year commitment to raise the literacy rate around the world through its Reading Action Program.

Literacy is a necessary skill for health, safety and stability in a person’s life.

The local organization, Lost Boys Rebuilding Southern Sudan, has developed the program to bring education to the wells where women and girls wait in long lines for safe water for their families.

They walk on average two miles to reach the wells, wait hours in line, fill their jerricans with water and walk two miles home, carrying 40 pounds of water on their heads.

This leaves little time to attend classes, so Literacy At The Well turns waiting time at the wells into an opportunity to learn how to

CHARLES – With the St. Charles North High School homecoming parade set for Friday afternoon, the St. Charles Police Department encourages motorists to use alternate routes and be mindful of temporary parking restrictions.

The parade route follows Illinois Street from Sixth Street to Second Avenue in St. Charles. It is set to begin at 1 p.m.

The following street closures will be in effect from 12:45 p.m. to about 1:45 p.m.: • Illinois Street will be closed between Seventh Street and Third Avenue.

• Second Street – also known as Route 31 – will close

as the parade crosses Second Street.

A detour for Route 31 will be posted and use West Main, Seventh and Prairie streets.

Trucks using Route 31 will be directed to Randall Road.

Parking will be restricted on the detour and parade routes as well as the parade staging area.

Restrictions will be in place on South Second and Third avenues; South Sixth Street between Main and Indiana streets; and Walnut Street between Seventh and Fifth streets.

Motorists are urged to use care and to watch for pedestrians.

Russell said hiring more deputies would cost an additional $163,000, compared to $187,000 to pay current deputies a $100 a day on-call fee plus overtime for actual hours worked.

Russell said he believed the $886,000 budget had been backed by a county financial advisory panel, because Rob Russell it represented a reduction from the $943,000 budget Russell had originally requested in mid-August.

The finance committee expressed no opposition to the $886,000 figure Aug. 28, when County Finance Director Joe Onzick indicated that Russell agreed to remove raises for current staff from the proposal.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen disagreed with Russell’s characterization of the budget talks, saying the $886,000 figure “had never been approved.”

He said Russell did not present his budget request in the correct format, while chiding Russell for not discussing the request with county finance officials before presenting it to the board.

“He is saying, ‘I’m an elected official, I know best,’ ” Lauzen said after the meeting.

“But, no. Once you have your budget, then you do know best.”

Lauzen also questioned the need for two new deputy coroners and the “assumptions” that undergirded Russell’s re-

quest.

The committee also questioned Russell, asking, among other questions, whether the $100 a day on-call payment was necessary.

The committee opted to kick discussion of Russell’s staffing needs to the County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee later this month.

Lauzen said he believed Russell and the board can reach agreement. But he said Russell will first need to open his office and operations to the board so they can decide if Russell’s request is justified.

“I insist on getting information,” Lauzen said. “I’m not taking anyone’s word for it.”

GENEVA – While Kane County is gradually piecing its 2014 budget together, the County Board and the county’s coroner continue to struggle to resolve differences over the coroner’s request to hire two new deputies.

Monday, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell presented a budget request again to the Kane County Board’s Finance Committee, reiterating his desire to add to his staff to meet the demands he believes his office is obligated to fulfill.

The budget request is Russell’s first since he was elected by county voters in November.

Discussion of Russell’s request came at the end of a series of budget presentations from other county offices and departments. Changes to

those budgets yielded a savings of about $514,000 next year, which county officials believe could be used to help fund raises for county employees.

Russell asked the committee to sign off on an annual budget for his office of $886,000, which would mark an increase of about 17 percent from last Chris Lauzen year’s $757,000.

Russell said the increase is needed to reorganize work shifts and respond to recent unionization of the deputy coroners.

Russell said he believes hiring the deputies would save the county about $24,000 next year versus paying existing deputy coroners to handle after-hours calls.

Bargain hunters comb St. Peter Barn Sale for deals

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A bagful of books sat beside Michelle Sottile as she sat on the floor of a building at the Kane County Fairgrounds on Sunday morning, sorting through dozens of children’s books.

“I’m a home-schooler,” the Geneva resident said, explaining she was using the annual St. Peter Barn Sale as a way to stock her library.

The barn sale, which benefits St. Peter Church in Geneva, was held Saturday and Sunday. It featured thousands of donated items, including antiques, books, china, glassware, furniture, clothes and toys. Whatever wasn’t sold would be donated to various charities.

Sottile came to the sale both days, she said. She got everything she really wanted Saturday and returned Sunday to buy extras, she said.

“It’s a great cause,” she said.

By midmorning Sunday, much of the inventory had been picked over. For example, volunteer Lisa O’LearyVolk said, about 65 percent to 70 percent of merchandise in the furniture department sold Saturday, the toy department nearly sold out the first day and the bicycles sold out within the first two hours.

Many departments offered discounted prices Sunday or $5 bag deals as a way to unload the rest of the inventory.

Dianne Denoon of Algonquin said she and her two daughters make it a point to hit up the Sunday sales. Foul weather like Sunday’s rain isn’t a deterrent, she said.

“We’ve always shown up.

Always,” said Denoon, a red and white umbrella tucked under her arm.

Indeed, O’Leary-Volk said, the rain didn’t keep shoppers away from the indoor sale.

“Rain hurts, but it’s not a deal breaker,” she said. “Bargain hunters will come out even in the rain.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Talking points To the Editor: Upon reading his Aug. 16 column on global warming, it became evident to me that Kane County Chronicle columnist Rick Holinger has not been checking his inbox.

All liberals should have received new orders from our masters at Democratic Party Headquarters.

They read: Effective immediately, substitute “global climate change” for the outdated and discredited term “global warming.” There are two justifications for revising this nomenclature: 1. We don’t want to look stupid if Earth actually gets colder or stays at the same average temperature. Climate is constantly in flux. No sci-

entist can accurately predict the weather one week in the future, much less one century out, so we must cover all possibilities.

2. Many people actually wish for “global warming” to occur.

A warmer Earth provides an environment that encourages human progress and prosperity. Witness the European Renaissance, which was nurtured by an era of unprecedented warmth.

How can we hope to continue usurping the rights and freedoms of Americans if they are not frightened by our phony predictions of disaster?

Mr. Holinger should read his Democratic talking points more carefully.

Regulators need to send JPMorgan Chase investors a signal BLOOMBERG NEWS Six U.S. agencies, a congressional committee and four state regulators – not to mention Canada, three European countries and the European Commission – are investigating JPMorgan Chase & Co. The bank’s litigation expenses hit $1 billion in the first half of this year, and the bank says its legal losses could reach $6.8 billion.

So shareholders are furious, right? Nope. JPMorgan’s shares have risen 35 percent in the past year, more than twice the 17 percent increase in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. Part of the reason has to be that $6.8 billion isn’t much for a bank that’s on track to make $23 billion this year.

Which leads to two ques-

tions: Five years after the global economy was sucker-punched by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., has the United States done enough to prevent financial companies from breaking the law? If not, what else can it do to deter misconduct – and motivate shareholders to demand changes?

For years, the Justice Department has been reluctant to punish large corporations for fear of driving them out of business. (Remember Arthur Andersen?) The department has instead relied on so-called deferred prosecutions, which usually involve signed promises not to misbehave and the acceptance of on-site monitors to check on compliance.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s view

has been that hitting public companies with large penalties hurts only shareholders.

When companies are willing to settle allegations of wrongdoing, the SEC’s default position has been to let them do so without admitting guilt.

This approach doesn’t protect investors or the economy. Instead, it contributes to market dysfunction by allowing companies to treat litigation as just a cost of doing business.

Shareholders, moreover, have little incentive to provide market discipline because they, too, benefit if companies can earn bigger profits by crossing legal lines with impunity. At JPMorgan specifically, shareholders can freely ignore the possibility that the U.S.’s largest bank – with $2.4 trillion in assets, it’s about the size of

France’s economy – may simply be too big to manage.

The good news is that regulators and prosecutors have the tools they need, including the securities laws and various other statutes against fraud and conspiracy, to discourage miscreants.

Plus, there is the anti-racketeering statute, which allows prosecutors to seek triple penalties if a company keeps violating the same laws.

SEC Chairwoman Mary Jo White, a former prosecutor, can demand only civil reparations, yet she holds a trump card – she can refuse to let JPMorgan settle cases without admitting or denying guilt. Then private litigants can piggyback off any SEC settlement, adding to the penalties.

Prosecutors are not always correct, of course.

JPMorgan units involved in such diverse businesses as electric-power trading and consumer credit-card services may not have engaged in all the bad practices they are accused of. Nor should the bank be tarred with the misconduct of former employees of Bear Stearns & Co. and Washington Mutual Corp., which JPMorgan bought at the U.S.’s behest in 2008 and must defend now.

At the same time, it’s not fair to say that prosecutors are retaliating for the bank’s criticism of federal regulators. The sheriffs aren’t overreaching; they’re merely late. If, in judiciously applying the law, the government sends a clear message that no bank gets a pass, then the financial system will be stronger – and more trustworthy – for everyone.

In sweeping the Royals, 2514, 25-12, the Spartans showed that good things can come in threes, not just disasters.

This time around, the trifecta pertained to the team’s serving zones. Ascending in aggressiveness from one – just get it in – to three – go for the ace – the signals usually favored the higher number against a young Rosary team.

St. Francis coach Peg Kopec also rested starting middle hitter Mary Boken after Boken tweaked her knee in the tournament final.

“Maddie is fine, but, you know, give somebody else a chance to play,” Kopec said.

“We allowed 12 and 14. Give somebody else a chance to play.”

Bandits win MWL title: Quad Cities completed a three-game sweep of South Bend on Saturday to capture

its second Midwest League title in three seasons and sixth title overall.

The River Bandits, a Houston Astros affiliate, went 81-57 during the regular season, including a 13-4 mark against the Kane County Cougars.

South Bend swept the visiting Cougars during a three-game series in July.

The Silver Hawks were without Geneva alumnus Brad Allen, a right-hander who was promoted to Advanced-A Visalia (Calif.) last month after going 7-6 with a 4.37 ERA in 20 apperances and 18 starts, including a no-hitter.

Heckert of a run: Kaneland graduate Kristen Heckert was the women’s runner-up at the Sept. 8 Chicago Half-marathon, finishing in a personal-record time of 1:19:18.

Heckert, of Lisle, competed collegiately at Murray State and Illinois-Chicago.

She was the top female finisher at the DeKalb Corn Classic 10K last month, completing the course in 36:11.

Blue Devils coach Howie Samb witnessed Ramp’s ace on the par-3, 170-yard 15th hole, in which Ramp used a 4-hybrid.

A transfer from Wisconsin-Whitewater, Ramp is majoring in golf enterprise management at Stout, which is the defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s golf champion.

She finished with a twoday 164 at the tournament, placing 13th.

Batavia senior Erin Bayram verbally committed to play her college basketball at Boston University late Saturday afternoon, maintaining her membership in the canine nickname family.

The Bulldogs’ 6-foot-2 center chose to become a Terrier after being thrilled by everything about the program and campus. So much for BU coach Kelly Greenberg’s advice to take some time with the decision.

“She wanted me to go home and talk it over with my parents,” Bayram said, “but I knew by the second day of the visit that I was going to commit.”

Bayram already had visited Saint Louis and Tennessee-Martin, and was planning to check out Cleveland State next week.

That itinerary changed when Bayram found she “just couldn’t compare any of the other schools to BU,” which she visited Thursday through Saturday.

The second Bulldog to make an NCAA Division I commitment in two weeks – guard Liza Fruendt verbaled to Missouri State late last month – Bayram showed improved durability and versatility as a junior. Sidelined with a torn left ACL early in her sophomore season, Bayram worked to return to form with a diligent 2012 offseason and has looked sharp in Batavia’s recent open gym workouts.

“She’s right now probably in the best shape she’s been in in the last three years,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “She had a real good summer, so it’s a nice ending to her kind of getting back on top of things.”

Now that she’s home from Boston, Bayram has once again channeled her focus and enthusiasm toward helping the Bulldogs continue their upward trend. Batavia won 18 games last season while dressing just eight players, and Bayram has kept her fitness level high through a busy summer that included playing AAU ball with the Illinois United.

Kaneland falls to DeKalb in 3 games

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Second-year DeKalb girls volleyball coach Ben Fisher expects the Northern Illinois Big 12 East to be a tough, competitive league.

First-year Kaneland coach Kerri McCastland echoed the statement.

If Monday’s 26-28, 25-16, 25-22 DeKalb win over the Knights in both teams’ conference opener is any indication, the fourth year of league play will be one wild ride.

DeKalb is off to a good start as it looks for a league crown.

The Barbs (6-2, 1-0 Northern

Illinois Big 12), can get off to an even better start with a win over Sycamore tonight.

“It was pretty big,” DeKalb sophomore Heather Bemis said of Monday’s effort. “It’s Kaneland. Our goal is to get conference.

We’re just taking it one game at a time and trying to be the best we can Jenny Lubic be because we have a lot of talent this year.”

McCastland’s thinks her young Kaneland team can compete for the conference crown with the likes of DeKalb,

which got all they could handle Monday from the Knights.

Junior Ellie Dunn had nine kills and five digs for Kaneland. Bridget Ransford finished with five kills and eight digs, while Jenny Lubic added eight assists and two digs.

“We have one senior, and we have two freshmen, and we have four sophomores. And I think that the fact that we progressed and ball-handled as well as we did, and the defense was consistent as it was, serves were great. We did what we needed to do,” McCastland said. “They just have to come to the end and believe that they’re that team, and they

haven’t had enough time to be together yet. It’s less than 30 days, so give it a minute.”

Bemis and the Barbs looked like they were going to take care of the Knights in Game 1 and look for a sweep, but Kaneland (6-8, 0-1 NI Big 12 East) roared back to end the game on a 7-2 run. Bemis said errors like net calls were a big reason for losing the lead.

She said her team eliminated that stuff the rest of the match.

“We just had to focus on keeping up our energy and just staying as a team and playing together,” Bemis said. “Once we got that, we could bring it

back. So we just focused on that.”

Bemis’ sister, Courtney, led DeKalb with 10 kills. Courtney Wagner had six kills and four blocks, while Madison Lord added 28 assists. Nicole Schladt and Abby Hickey each had eight digs.

While DeKalb’s long-term goal is to win the conference, Fisher said the main thing he wants to see is his team get better and keep improving every game.

“Winning conference would be phenomenal,” Fisher said. “But our goal is to always be playing well at the end of October.”

In four conference matches, Elise has been the medalist for the team multiple times.

She has earned eight points as an individual towards All-Conference.

She is a team player and a valuable team member who is very consistent, and she is a great student who enjoys all curricular areas.

O’Connor was a Big Northern East All-Conference player during his Sophomore and Junior seasons, and his junior year he led the team in assists. After playing in the only loss of the season so far, the coach from the opposing team gave O’Connor great compliments on how hard he worked.

Moffatt plays wide receiver and center for tavia Football. He also holds, returns kicks, and punts. Overall, he is a do-it-all player!

In June, Nathaniel was invited to the Midwest Distance Gala, where he won the 800m run, breaking a school record set in 1975. His time is the fastest in the state and ranks in the top 10 in the country. He was a member of the state 2A champion 4x800 relay team in the Spring.

A Northern Illinois recruit, Krage has shined as an outside hitter for the North Stars, who won the Plainfield North tournament over Labor Day weekend.

PLAINFIELD – The Batavia boys soccer team spotted Plainfield North an early lead, then scored two straight goals before settling for a 2-2 draw Monday in nonconference play.

Plainfield North capitalized on Batavia’s own-goal for a 1-0 lead before Ian Larson and Kevin Collins each scored for the Bulldogs (6-2-1). The Tigers tied the match with about six minutes to go.

Batavia entered play fresh off a tournament championship in downstate Morton over the weekend.

“Four games in four days, so we were a little bit tired, shall we say,” Batavia coach

Mark Gianfrancesco said.

“We were winded. We got some injuries and stuff, but the boys did a nice job muscling through, especially being down 1-0 on the own-goal.”

NOTEWORTHY North’s Conroyd: Loss to East ‘hit me hard’ St. Charles North linebacker Reece Conroyd is considered the heart and soul of his team’s defense, so it comes as little surprise that Friday’s 28-21 overtime loss at St. Charles East caused the senior some serious heartache.

“I tell you what, you still feel it when you come into school [Monday] morning,” Conroyd said. “It still hurts.

It kills the weekend. Usually, I try to have fun on the weekend but it was just one of those weekends you don’t want to do anything, you don’t want to go out, you don’t want to see your friends. …. You don’t want to see the world. You’re so bummed.”

Conroyd said he felt especially upset because he had a chance to take down East’s

“I didn’t buzz my feet,” said Conroyd, using the program’s terminology for properly shuffling feet in preparation to make a tackle. “I just kind of lunged at him. Against a player of that caliber – you have to give some props to him as well. He’s a great player. He made a play. I forgot my fundamentals at a crucial moment, and that’s when it counts.”

Both of the losses for North (1-2) have come in overtime.

The North Stars realize how close they are to being 2-1 or 3-0 but Conroyd said the team is searching for a greater sense of purpose that will put it over the top in tight games.

“We feel we’re not a family yet,” Conroyd said. “We feel we’re close but we’re not there yet. [The coaches] have been pushing us to get on each other in practice and don’t have the coaches have to do everything.”

The North Stars’ prospects for a morale boost this week are strong, with 0-3 Elgin visiting North on Friday. It’s also North’s homecoming week.

East is 5-0 against North in coach Mike Fields’ five years guiding the Saints.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Garden seats shaped like a barrel are being made today from porcelain, pottery, plastic, rattan and even plaster.

They are used in a living room as a coffee table, in a powder room as a pedestal to hold towels, or inside or outside as a seat. The original antique “zuodun,” a Chinese barrel seat, was a drum made with stretched skin tops held by nails and trimmed with nail heads. Many modern barrel seats have a row of round bumps that imitate old nail heads. Most common are white porcelain “barrels” decorated with blue designs, often hand-painted. A 19-inchhigh porcelain garden stool made in about 1900 sold for $1,210 at a Leland Little auction last December. The porcelain is blue with white flowers and birds. The stool has pierced decorations and bumps that resemble nail heads. *** Q: When I lived in the north woods, I came across a pile of half-buried old bottles along a loggers’ road. One of them was a Dr Pepper bottle. There is no label on it, only raised letters and numbers. It reads “Dr Pepper, Good for Life.” On the back is a circle with the numbers 10, 2 and 4. The bottom reads “Fairmont, Minn.” Can you tell me something about it and if it’s worth anything?

A: The Dr Pepper soft drink was first served in Waco, Texas, in 1885 and marketed nationally in 1904. The period after “Dr” was used on and off in logos, then removed entirely in the 1950s. Your Dr Pepper bottle dates from between 1927 and 1934. During this time period, embossed or “raised” logos and letters were used on the brand’s bottles, along with the bottling city’s name on the bottom. The 10-2-4 marketing idea for Dr Pepper was introduced in 1926 and stands for “Drink a Bite to Eat at 10, 2 and 4 o’Clock.” The circle represents a clock dial. Dr Pepper bottles with raised letters like yours can sell for up to

A: McClelland Barclay (1891-1942) worked in New York City as a commercial artist and magazine illustrator. He started designing jewelry in the late 1930s. His designs were made by the Rice-Weiner Co. from 1939 to 1943.

They ranged from gilt-metal Art Moderne pieces in 1939 to sterling-silver stylized animal designs in 1943. Pieces usually were marked with Barclay’s name.

He also designed metal bookends, ashtrays, desk sets and lamps signed with his name. Barclay was a U.S. Navy officer during World War II. He died when his ship was torpedoed near the Solomon Islands. After Barclay’s death, Rice-Weiner made a line of jewelry called “Barclay” that was influenced by his earlier designs. A McClelland Barclay pin sells for about $200. *** Q: I would like help in placing a value on a tea set marked “Phoenix Ware, Made in England, T.F. & S. Ltd.” I have the tray, six dessert plates, six cups and saucers, the cream pitcher and the sugar bowl. Two cups are broken, but I have the pieces.

A: The mark on your tea set was used by Thomas Forester & Sons Ltd. at the Phoenix Works in Longton, Staffordshire, England.

Thomas Forester opened a pottery in Longton in 1877 and built the Phoenix Works in 1879. The name of the company became Thomas Forester & Sons after his sons joined the business in 1883.

The Washington Post A brewing financial crisis is forcing NPR to make one of the largest staff reductions in its history – at a time when the radio and digital news organization had seemed to be on the upswing.

Washington-based NPR disclosed a buyout plan Friday that it hopes will reduce its 840-member payroll by about 10 percent over the next year. NPR said the buyout is necessary to close a persistent deficit, projected at $6 million in its upcoming fiscal year.

Until Friday’s news, NPR had escaped many of the worst effects of the Great Recession and the digital revolution that has laid low many media organizations.

In April, it opened its new headquarters building in the shadow of the Capitol, a $201 million edifice complete with an in-house restaurant and executive chef, health-care facilities, an employee gym and gift shop.

The audience for NPR’s news and entertainment programming, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” meanwhile, has chugged steadily upward, surpassing more than 26 million listeners per week. It has added to its domestic and international bureaus with a new outlet in Rio de Janeiro this year. And its journalists have reported extensively from the Middle East during the crises in Egypt and Syria.

Among its new features is “Code Switch,” with regular reporting on race, ethnicity and culture.

But even with a $200 million bequest in 2003 from Joan Kroc, the late McDonald’s heiress, NPR has been unable to stave off deterioration in its finances and turnover in its executive suite.

NPR in June 2013 moved into a new, $201 million headquarters in Washington with an executive chef, health-care facilities, an employee gym and a gift shop. The public-radio and digital news organization on Friday announced plans to offer buyouts in an attempt to cut staff by 10 percent as it tries to close an operating deficit.

Gary Knell, the current chief executive, has announced that he will leave to head the National Geographic Society when his two-year contract expires in November.

Knell has issued periodic warnings about the rising tide of red ink, which he has attributed to a decline in corporate “underwriting” — public broadcasting’s term for advertising.

“It’s a challenging time for everyone in our profession,” Scott Simon, the veteran NPR host, said Friday after employees were briefed on the buyout plan. “I’m struck by the confidence that our leadership has that voluntary buyouts will bring [NPR’s finances] back into line. I certainly hope so.”

NPR’s board also said it approved an interim replacement for Knell: Paul Haaga Jr., a former lawyer for the Securities and Exchange Commission and the retired chairman of the Investment Company Institute and of Capital Research and Management, an investment concern.

The organization laid

off 64 employees, or about 8 percent of its staff, in late 2008 and cut two programs to save money.

NPR receives less than 2 percent of its annual budget directly from federal funds but relies on dues from member stations that receive an average of 15 percent of their budgets from federal funds.

Separately, NPR disclosed in a tax filing Friday that it paid its former chief executive, Vivian Schiller, nearly $679,000 in salary and severance in 2011, after Schiller resigned following a 26-month tenure marked by two damaging episodes.

That disclosure, coupled with the buyout announcement, caused some “disgust” with upper management, said one longtime NPR employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is concerned about his job. “It’s no tribute to our leadership’s sagacity that they have to keep dealing with these kinds of self-created problems,” he said.

Schiller resigned amid pressure in March 2011 as NPR was dealing with the fallout from a video “sting”

conducted by conservative activist James O’Keefe. He secretly recorded a meeting between two NPR fundraisers and two men posing as would-be NPR donors who indicated that they had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

In the recording, which O’Keefe released in a selectively edited form, the NPR representatives make disparaging remarks about tea party conservatives, appeared to endorse the idea that Jews control the news media and suggested that NPR could survive without its federal tax subsidy.

The recording renewed calls among conservatives to eliminate taxpayer support of public broadcasting, but Congress ultimately voted to continue spending about $450 million a year to help fund hundreds of public radio and TV stations, including NPR and PBS. Schiller also oversaw the firing of longtime NPR analyst Juan Williams in October 2010 after Williams said on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” that he worried about people in “Muslim garb” when he got on an airplane.

Williams’ firing sparked criticism of NPR, much of it fanned by commentators on Fox News, where Williams was an analyst.

NPR paid Schiller $532,212 in severance and $99,671 in salary, plus a bonus of $5,712 and other miscellaneous compensation in 2011, the organization said in the filing, which is required of tax-exempt organizations.

NPR has had high turnover at the top of the organization since longtime chief executive Kevin Klose stepped down in 2006. Since that time, it has had five permanent and interim chief executives, none of whom has lasted longer than Schiller.

It’s time to have yourself evaluated because it is possible you suffer from attention deficit disorder.

Dense breast tissue may call for further screening tests Dear Doctor K: After my last mammogram, the doctor told me I have dense breasts. Does this increase my risk of breast cancer?

Dear Reader: A woman’s breast contains different types of tissue, including fat. Women with dense breasts have relatively less fat in their breasts. Specifically, if more than 50 percent of your breasts is made up of other breast tissue (as opposed to fat), then by definition you are said to have “dense breasts.” It’s not uncommon. About 40 percent of women have dense breasts.

Women with dense breasts have a slightly increased chance of developing breast cancer – and dense breasts can make cancer harder to spot. That’s because both breast tissue and tumors appear white on a mammogram.

Imagine looking at snowflakes on a black glove. Set against the dark fabric, you can make out some of the crystals in detail.

Then, take those same flakes and put them in a bed of snow. Now it becomes difficult to distinguish the flakes from their background.

That is the challenge radiologists face when trying to read the mammograms of a woman with dense breasts. (I’ve put an image of how dense breast tissue and

There now is a federal law in the United States that mammogram reports should always explicitly state whether a breast is “dense” or not.

So, should you have additional screening tests for breast cancer? The trouble is, no test can diagnose breast cancer with 100 percent accuracy, especially in women with dense breasts.

And the additional tests that I’m about to describe pick up a lot of “false positives.” The result looks like there might be cancer, requiring a biopsy that shows no cancer. Additional screening tests can also be costly.

If you do decide to have further screening, here are some options to consider: • Ultrasound. In September 2012, the FDA approved a new breast ultrasound system specifically for screening dense breasts. This ultrasound scans the entire breast using high-fre-

quency sound waves and quickly produces several images. If you were going to have additional testing, your doctor most likely will recommend this ultrasound.

• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnets and radio waves to visualize the breasts.

It would not normally be recommended just because a woman has dense breasts, because of the problem of false-positive results.

• Digital mammography sends X-ray images of the breast to a computer, rather than to film, making them easier to manipulate and interpret. A large study of nearly 50,000 women concluded that digital mammography was somewhat more accurate than regular film mammography in women with dense breasts.

Talk with your doctor about your overall risk of developing breast cancer. Together, you can determine what screening tests you need and how often, and what prevention strategies you should be following.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a big fan and read your column faithfully. I’m writing about your response to the girl in Texas who danced with a boy at the senior prom while her date was outside talking to his brother on his cellphone. When her date returned, he was extremely upset that she was dancing with another guy and left the prom saying, “The guy you’re dancing with can take you home.”

The girl’s brother came and took her home. But she wrote that the prom was ruined for her.

She wrote to you asking if you thought she had done anything wrong. You told her that her date was 100 percent wrong for not taking her home. But you added that she should not have danced with another guy unless she had asked for and received permission from her date.

I strongly disagree! I can’t see where the girl did anything wrong and was disappointed when your answer suggested that she might have.

This seems very sexist.

Did we time warp back to the Victorian era? I thought women were way beyond having to ask for permission from a date just to dance with another guy. I’m still a big fan, but felt I had to speak up for the Texas girl and for all women. – Nameless, Cumberland, Md. Dear Nameless: I told the girl that I wasn’t sure what the proper protocol would be in that situation, but I believed she should have asked her date if she could dance with another guy. It’s obvious that I gave her the wrong answer!

My school counselor is doing all she can to see that I get one. Of course, my grades will determine that. My dad is from the “old country” (Poland) and wants me to get a part-time job during my senior year. I had a summer job, but I don’t want to jeopardize my GPA by working while in school. Dear Abby: My younger sister, “Tanya,” is 22 and a single mother. Her son is 2. She’s pregnant again, and this time her baby will be a girl.

My sister is very dramatic and emotional. She gets angry easily and has a short fuse. She’s great with her son, except he picks up on her drama and is somewhat dramatic himself. My worry is that girls are more likely to imitate that behavior, and I’m concerned my niece will be just like her mother. Although Tanya has a good heart, her emotional issues have caused her to have horrible relationships with men.

When I suggested to my sister that she talk to someone about her anger, she flipped out on me.

We were both sexually abused as children. I have dealt with those issues and she has not. How does that apply to this deal?

South is in four spades. West leads the heart king. How should declarer proceed?

Over West’s takeout double, North’s redouble indicated 10 points or more and denied four or more spades. (With four or more spades, North would have responded two no-trump, which should be called Truscott, but is often known as Jordan because he popularized the gadget in the United States.) After this redouble, either North and South buy the contract or an opponent plays in something doubled for penalties.

North’s three-spade rebid indicated game-forcing values with exactly three-card spade support.

South has four losers: two hearts and two diamonds. He has only nine winners: five spades, one heart, one diamond and two clubs. But if declarer can ruff a loser in the shorter trump hand, it will generate an extra trump trick. Here, South should ruff his third diamond on the board. And there is no point in delaying. He takes the first trick and plays two rounds of diamonds.

Suppose West wins, cashes two hearts, and shifts to a club.

Declarer wins in his hand, ruffs the third diamond high, draws trumps and claims.
