OUT AND ABOUT Sugar Grove Chamber sets scholarship fair SUGAR GROVE – For the third year, the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce is offering its Scholarship Opportunity Fair free to the public from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Thursday at the Sugar Grove Township Community Building, 54 Snow St., Sugar Grove.

Representatives from organizations and colleges will offer assistance in obtaining financial assistance to those planning to attend college.

There will be expert speakers giving information and help on “How to Fill Out a FAFSA Form” (6:30 p.m.); “Internet Scholarship Search” (7 p.m.); “How to Complete a Scholarship Application and Essay” (7:30 p.m.); and “How to Fill Out a FAFSA Form” (8 p.m.).

‘Nuncrackers’ auditions at Steel Beam ST. CHARLES – Steel Beam Theatre in downtown St. Charles has announced auditions for “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical,” directed and choreographed by Kevin Wiczer.

Adults will be seen from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday at the theater, 111 W. Main St., St. Charles. Children ages 9 to 14 will be seen from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Adults should prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song that shows off vocal ability and a one-minute comedic monologue.

Children should prepare their favorite Christmas carol and be prepared to tell a funny story that shows off their personality. Twelve children are to be cast.

Callbacks, if needed, will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Jazz scene comes alive at fest

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nate Stelton of North Aurora said he loves the spontaneity and improvisation that creates the foundation of jazz music.

He stopped by The Office in St. Charles to watch a friend’s band, the Andy Schlinder Duo, on Saturday afternoon as the city celebrated its second annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend.

The St. Charles Jazz Weekend was put on in association with the St. Charles Arts Council AllCity, All-Arts Event – Charlie’s Center for the Arts – All Of The Arts, All Over Town.

“It’s great that St. Charles is doing this,” Stelton said. “I want to see more jazz being showcased.”

1932 during his performance on Saturday, played with guitarist Kevin Brown and an occasional stand-in, eighth-grader Sam Schatz, who played the trombone.

Schlinder said he always jumps at the chance to include younger players in performances.

“That’s part of the jazz tradition – letting younger players in,” he said.

Schlinder, who grew up in St. Charles, said he was part of last year’s inaugural St. Charles Jazz Weekend and noted that the festival has since grown. The number of venues grew from four to eight between this year and last year, and 14 performances were sched-

uled at various downtown restaurants from Thursday through Sunday.

“I think it’s been blossoming,” he said, adding that he would like to see the festival expanded to Lincoln Park in the future. “I like the restaurant idea. There are a lot more performers this year.”

Schlinder said he was particularly excited to see Chicago-born and Grammy award winning saxophonist Frank Catalano on this year’s list of performers. He said Catalano’s performances, paired with the fact that the St. Charles Jazz Weekend was advertised in Chicago Jazz Magazine, shows that the festival seems to be gaining credibility and momentum.

Stelton, who plays in a band called Jazz Vertigo, said Catalano is a “top-shelf” Chicago artist.

“They drew some good talent to the area,” Stelton said. “I hope they keep it up.”

ST. CHARLES – A bagful of books sat beside Michelle Sottile as she sat on the floor of a building at the Kane County Fairgrounds on Sunday morning, sorting through dozens of children’s books.

“I’m a homeschooler,” the Geneva resident said, explaining she was using the annual St. Peter Barn Sale as a way to stock her library.

The barn sale, which benefits St. Peter Church in Geneva, was held Saturday and Sunday. It featured thousands of donated items, including antiques, books, china, glassware, furniture, clothes and toys. Whatever wasn’t sold would be donated to various charities.

Sottile came to the sale both days, she said. She got everything she really wanted Saturday, she said, and she returned Sunday to buy extras.

“It’s a great cause,” she said.

By mid-morning Sunday, much of the inventory had been picked over. For example, volunteer Lisa O’LearyVolk said, about 65 to 70 percent of merchandise in the furniture department sold Saturday, the toy department nearly sold out the first day and the bicycles sold out within the first two hours.

Sunday, many departments offered discounted prices or $5 bag deals as a way to unload the rest of the inventory.

Dianne Denoon of Algonquin said she and her two daughters make it a point to hit up the Sunday sales. Foul weather, like Sunday’s rain, isn’t a deterrent, she said.

“We’ve always shown up.

Always,” Denoon said, a red and white umbrella tucked under her arm.

Indeed, O’Leary-Volk said, the rain didn’t keep shoppers away from the indoor sale.

“Rain hurts, but it’s not a deal breaker,” she said.

“Bargain-hunters will come out even in the rain.”

Batavia has ball, doubles success

CHARLES – Between keeping score, calling around to other sites and ultimately tending to everything else involved in coordinating the St. Charles East girls tennis tournament, Saints coach Sena Drawer dispensed the following advice Saturday afternoon: “You have the time of your life out there.”

She was addressing the combatants in the fifth-place match at No. 1 singles, but Drawer’s words to Ava Kolman of St. Francis and Emme Lindquist of Wheaton North might has well have been evergreen to the rest of the eightteam field.

Wonderful weather and a well-paced match flow at East, St. Charles North and Geneva served as backdrop as Naperville Central edged Batavia, 57-51, for the team title. Here’s a look at the Bulldogs’ push, among other highlights for Chronicle-area teams, including East (fourth), Geneva (sixth) and St. Francis (seventh): Dogged doubles: Batavia captured championships at No. 1 doubles (Amelia Cogan/Jenny Mizikar) and No. 3 doubles (Caroline Lantz/Julianne Robinson) while earning three runner-up

finishes.

East claimed the other two doubles titles behind strong efforts from Haydyn Jones and Kelsie Roberton (No. 2) and Katie Downing and Kelly Rinker (No. 4).

Cogan and Mizikar assured they’d improve on last season’s third-place run with a 5-7, 6-4 (10-8) victory against the Naperville Central duo of Meaghan Bedigian and Sara Furukawa in the semifinals.

“My heart started beating pretty fast, so I was a little nervous,” Mizikar said, “but I knew we could pull it off and get the win.”

There was much less tension in the final, a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Benet’s Margaret Wilhelm and Katie Telford. Cogan and Mizikar, paired for the third straight fall, yielded their only two games after racing to a 5-0 edge in the second set.

“We were kind of just rolling through, and so it definitely was like, ‘All right.

One more. We can do it. Let’s just get it, get it over with,’ ” Mizikar said.

Einck can see you: Geneva junior Kirby Einck and Naperville Central sophomore Tiffany Chen exchanged pleasantries at the net after Chen’s 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles final.

Moments later, Chen admitted “I see a lot of myself in Kirby,” who she defeated in a tiebreaker during the teams’

Sept. 5 dual in Naperville. The analysis sounded about right to Einck as she quickly forms a friendly rivalry with Chen, a fourth-place state finisher in her debut season last fall.

“I think we’re both aggressive. We like to be the first ones to take the ball and hit a winner or get the opponent off their feet a little bit. So I would say, yeah, we have pretty similar games,” Einck said. “Steady, too, from the baseline. We don’t really like to go to the net, though, not too much. But we dominate the baseline, for the most part.”

Einck, a four-match winner at state in 2012, lost just three games in her opening-round and semifinal victories Saturday.

“I’ve beat some really good players, and then I had a really good match with Tiffany that Thursday [Sept. 5] and today,” Einck said. “So I’m pretty satisfied with how the season’s going so far.”

Geneva’s Grace Krueger finished third at No. 2 singles for the Vikings’ next-highest finish.

Spartan effort: The No. 3 doubles tandem of seniors Annie Madigan and Caitlin Marron placed fourth to earn St. Francis’ highest finish. Four Spartans entries placed fifth, as St. Francis finished one point behind Geneva for sixth place, 32-31.

No matter what happens the rest of the way, this is a win the Saints will be talking about for a long, long time.

Forever, probably.

St. Charles North. Overtime. A picture-perfect fall night.

And Brannon Barry, the Saints’ biggest gun, making big plays when they were needed to put East over the top.

It’s a win worth savoring for a long time, and who knows, maybe it’s a win that will end up putting the Saints in position to win a conference title when it’s all said and done.

Of course, doing so will take a Herculean effort the rest of the way considering the Batavia Bulldogs are still playing football.

Playing it awfully well, as Geneva found out Friday night.

They say rivalry games bring out the best in both teams, and often that’s the case, but this Batavia-Geneva 2013 was a mismatch.

Too much Mike Moffatt, too much Micah Coffey, too much Anthony Scaccia and too many mistakes by a pretty talented Geneva team.

It’ll be interesting to see how Geneva and North bounce back from emotional setbacks. Probably a good thing that both teams step down in competition next week, but they’ve gotta keep their heads up and get back on track in a hurry. 1-2 is a scary place to be.z Kaneland looked slick as usual way, way out west, but looks like the Knights got banged up some. Here’s hoping for a return to health ASAP for a team that is playing scary-good football.

Batavia boys XC goes deep downstate KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE PEORIA – Before the season, veteran Batavia boys cross country coach Mike DiDomenico called the 2013 Bulldogs his deepest group to date.

On Saturday, Batavia showed well at the scene where it hopes that claim will resonate the most.

Competing at Detweiller Park, site of the state meet, the Bulldogs finished eighth in the 3A boys race at the First To The Finish Invitational.

Seniors Chris Orlow (25th, 15:19.77) and Mitch Zabka (29th, 15:20.58) paced Batavia to a team score of 318 in the 45team competition.

The race – and the entire event – was well-stocked with Chronicle-area athletes hoping to see Detweiller again in November. Geneva’s Blaine Bartel (26th, 15:19.89), St. Charles North’s Nathan Klair (33rd, 15:23) and Marmion’s Brady Bobbitt (79th, 15:46) led their respective teams.

Scoring an aggregate 249, Geneva placed ninth in the 3A girls race behind McKenzie Altmayer (14th, 18:07) and Emma McSpadden (21st, 18:18).

Kaneland navigated a 2A boys field of 52 teams and more than 750 runners to place 11th.

Ryan Bower (40th, 15:55) and Luis Acosta (71st, 16:21) were

at the head of a pack of four Knights in the top 100.

“We feel like we have a lot of room for growth, and we realize that we have about five weeks to put our pieces in place ahead of the conference meet,” Knights coach Chad Clarey said.

In the 2A girls race, top area runners included Meghan McShea of St. Francis (41st, 19:07) and Katie Bush of Burlington Central (80th, 19:44).

For the 1A girls, ACC’s Karina Liz was 19th in 18:48, while Aurora Christian counterpart Becca Wert took 90th in 20:32.

Royal Cadet Invitational: At Aurora, Geneva finished fourth in the boys race and sixth in the girls race at Marmion behind strong runs from Steve Creger (12th, 17:13) and Emma Ehrhardt (10th, 20:02), respectively.

In the girls race, Batavia sophomore Dakota Roman placed second in 18:55 to help the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish. Rosary finished eighth among 14 teams behind Emily Martin (ninth, 19:58). Wheaton Academy was fourth, with 11th-place Gretchen Pearson (20:03) leading the way.

Wheaton Academy was third in the boys race behind a trio of top-10 individual finishers led by Noah Van Dyke (third, 16:29). Anthony Pulla-

no (26th, 18:08) paced sixthplace Marmion.

Wauconda Invitational: At Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda, Brianna Bower finished ninth individually to help Kaneland take 14th in the 23-team event.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL East wins Prairie Ridge Invite: At Crystal Lake, St. Charles East improved to 11-3 by going 4-1 in the tournament, including a 25-20, 25-16 sweep of Crystal Lake Central in the final match. Dana Voltolina (25 kills), Megan Schildmeyer (24) and Mikaela Mosquera (23) paced a balanced attack on the day. Carly Jimenez dished 15 assists in the final.

East defeated Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival Batavia, 25-12, 25-17, earlier in the day. The teams meet in league play on Oct. 15 in St. Charles.

FOOTBALL Aurora Christian 59, Walther Lutheran 7: At Melrose Park, Aurora Christian improved to 3-0 by overwhelming another opponent, this one a Suburban Christian Conference crossover foe. The Eagles, who host Wheaton Academy next week, did allow their first touchdown of the season, but still hold a 178-7 scoring edge on opponents this season.

ELMHURST – Aurora Central Catholic and IC Catholic Prep both came out trying to establish a running game Saturday in the opening Suburban Christian Gold contest for both teams, and not without good reason.

Of the 11 passes the two teams attempted in the second half at Lewis Stadium, four ended in interceptions, including one that proved pivotal in IC Catholic’s 21-14 victory.

With the score tied at 7-all early in the third quarter, ACC (2-1 overall, 0-1 SCC Gold) appeared to gain some momen-

tum when sophomore linebacker Sam Ariano ended the Knights’ opening drive of the half by picking off quarterback Jack Copher. But IC Catholic defensive end Michael Perrone changed the complexion of the game moments later when he intercepted a pass by ACC senior quarterback Kyle Reilly and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.

“When your defense is coming up with big stops for you and you can’t take advantage of it, that’s ultimately what’s going to be the costly deal,” Chargers’ coach Brian Casey said. “Give credit to IC. Their kids made plays.”

Recently the father of one of his close childhood friends died.

The response it brings (“Ha, ha, ha – isn’t she cute!”) teaches the little girl that this is a way to get attention. While this may be amusing at 2, it is setting a pattern that will attract the wrong kind of attention when she is 4, 5 or 6. Envision her mooning the first-grade class! Perhaps you can make your daughter-in-law understand by showing her this column. I certainly hope so.

That certainly swims against modern thinking that recommends diversifying. At the bridge table, sometimes you have to decide between two strains. If your choice is between a suit and no-trump, why might you pick one over the other?

Having a trump suit gives you more control. But if it breaks badly, there might be no way to recover. In no-trump you may have an alternative source of tricks that will allow you to get home.

In today’s deal, South went for six no-trump, not for fear of a bad spade split, but to protect his club holding from an attack by East’s opening lead. Obviously, South did not know that his partner had the queen.

How should South play in six no-trump? West leads the club 10. East wins with his ace and returns a club.

Here, if South had put his partner into six spades and East had led the club ace, North would have had to guess the trump suit correctly. In six no-trump, declarer, after losing the first trick, had 10 top tricks. His first thought was to try to run the spades.

And the percentage play was to cash his king, then to play low to dummy’s ace. Here, luck was out.

What now?

South had to take four diamond tricks. So he called for dummy’s 10. If East had played low, it would have been easy. But East covered. South won with his ace, led a heart to dummy’s queen and played a diamond to his eight. The second egg did not crack, so the slam was made.
