Journalist award recognizes partnership I received an exciting email late last month from Kari Miller, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District.

Kari wanted to let me know that the park district’s nomination of the Kane County Chronicle had won a Top Journalist award from the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Reporter Eric Schelkopf and I were named as part of the award. Kari shared with me what was written as part of the nomination form.

Coultrap, who served as Geneva’s superintendent of schools from 1912 to 1950. In addition to the dedication, the late superintendent’s grandson, Paul Coultrap, and other members of the family will be present to speak and open a time capsule found this summer during the demolition of the Coultrap Elementary School building on Peyton Street.

Conley Memorial Walk set for today in Elburn WHAT: The third annual Bruce Conley Memorial Walk is set. MODERN ROYALTY Area homecoming courts becoming more inclusive

I

t’s been nearly a year since Thomas Broviak was crowned homecoming king, but he still talks about it often. A “Homecoming Royalty 2012” sign, complete with his name and a picture of a Geneva High School Vikings mascot, still hangs on his bedroom wall, and his crown sits nearby.

“To Tom, he’ll always be homecoming king,” said his mother, Pam Broviak.

Thomas Broviak and his girlfriend, Krissy Althersohn, who are both special-needs students, served as Geneva’s homecoming king and queen last year, and Geneva High School Principal Tom Rogers said their nominations received nothing but positive reception from the community.

“I never, ever thought he and Krissy would be named to homecoming court,” Pam Broviak said. “Finally, all the work we’ve done for inclusion paid off.”

Geneva High School was one example of a student population that elected a nontraditional homecoming court last year, but it wasn’t the only one in the area. Kaneland High School students elected Samantha Garcia as homecoming queen while she was recovering from a car crash in July 2012 that caused head injuries.

Garcia said being homecoming royalty was a positive experience overall, but said she hopes she didn’t win just because she was in an accident.

“I just don’t want to be labeled,” she said, adding that she felt the students expressed genuine support during her recovery, “especially by the way people acted when I was

Patrick Trapp, a social worker at Kaneland High School, said he has seen several examples of homecoming courts that aren’t necessarily made up of students from the stereotypical popular crowd.

He said when he started working at Kaneland in 2004, “one of the things that really stuck out to me that was very uncommon from my own experience in high school ... was that it was interesting how unconventional some of the kids who were considered popular, but didn’t fit conventional popularity.”

One thing many of them

had in common, he said, was that those students seemed to fit in with just about every type of crowd and could always be seen interacting with different groups of students.

He said in Garcia’s case, the student body wanted to recognize an already well-liked student for overcoming so many obstacles.

Pam Broviak said she thinks students are thinking more about those with special needs or who have risen above challenges, as examples throughout the country have shown in recent years. Today’s generation seems more tolerant and accepting of ev-

eryone, she said.

“It just must be a different attitude that the school cultivates, and probably the parents,” she said.

Rogers said a group of students who work with special-needs students in a PE class spearheaded the effort to elect Thomas Broviak and Althersohn. He said it’s a little too early to tell what’s on tap for this year’s homecoming nominations.

“It caught on and worked out really well,” he said. “It remains to be seen whether this will become a trend or whether something a group of students decided to do. ... I just

think it’s one of those unique things that happens from time to time. Maybe having a yearly thing would not be appropriate.”

Garcia’s mother, Lisa Garcia-DeFranze, said she thinks a lot of students have changed their thoughts about what a homecoming crown means, and that it’s different for prom, which she said is a bigger deal.

The distinction isn’t one her son will forget any time soon.

“We’re just very happy and proud of him,” she said. “We had people send cards and emails. I think people like it because it’s something that shows the good side of humanity.”

Sticking up for the house centipede GOOD NATURED Pam Otto It was an “Eek!” heard round the world. Or at least in every corner of our humble campus abode. My college roommate Alisan, one of three people I shared the apartment with, had uncorked the shriek, the likes of which I hadn’t heard since my box turtle Arthur crawled over her bare foot during finals week of fall semester 1982.

This, however, was spring 1984. The four of us were living in a swanky two-bedroom, shag-carpeted unit that overlooked a small creek (“the Boneyard,” for any of you University of Illinois grads). Dark and somewhat damp, the apartment was home to all manner of crawly things, especially cockroaches.

We all knew Al’s cockroach squeal, which really was more of a muffled “Aak!” than a full-blown “Eek!” But this startling outburst was way more chilling. It was the sort of scream reserved for life’s truly menacing pests: the mouse, the spider ... and the house centipede, scutigera coleoptrata.

The house centipede, scutigera coleoptrata, is gifted with longer rear legs that cross over its shorter forelegs. That particular trait prevents tripping and allows top speeds of 16 feet per second, or 11 mph. many-legged creature I’m talking about. Yellowish tan, usually with vague longitudinal stripes, these are the critters people usually describe as having “a million legs” and moving “a thousand miles an hour.” They frequently appear in sinks and tubs, but also can be found traipsing across walls, ceilings, baseboards and – in

Al’s case, rather disconcertingly – a pile of freshly laundered delicates.

I’m reminded of Al’s

centipede scream every time I see a house centipede, which is fairly often.

These successful myriapods,

native to (most likely) the Mediterranean region, have been introduced across the United States and southern Canada. Although they are sensitive to cold temperatures, they’ve found a perfect habitat inside our climate-controlled homes, where they enjoy year-round comfort as well as an abundance of food.

This is where I’ll probably lose some of you, because what I’m about to do now is stick up for these wiggly squigglers. True, they’re neither cute nor handsome, and the way they move is, well, downright creepy. But house centipedes are, like fly swatters and ant traps, handy to have around.

So long as they can avoid ending up on the business end of a shoe, a tissue or – my friend Barb’s preferred means, a stream of hairspray – house centipedes will work diligently to reduce your home’s populations of a wide array of even less savory characters.

No one knows exactly when they showed up, but house centipedes have shared our living spaces here in the U.S. for at least a century and a half.

By the early 1900s, they were established enough to

earn their own United States Department of Agriculture publication: Circular No. 48, The House Centipede. Entomologists of the time wrote, “It may often be seen darting across floors with very great speed, occasionally stopping suddenly and remaining absolutely motionless, presently to resume its rapid movements, often darting directly at inmates of the house, particularly women, evidently with a desire to conceal itself beneath their dresses, and thus creating much consternation.”

The next time you or one of your “inmates” spots a house centipede, take a moment to

take a look at its many fine traits. Adults have 15 pairs of legs, neatly marked in tweedy tans and browns. Larvae, however, start out with only four pairs, adding more as they molt and mature.

The final pair of legs on mature house centipedes actually function as sensory organs, much like the antennae at the front of the animal.

This added input helps house centipedes hunt with deadly accuracy; it’s also useful when they go on the prowl for mates.

Given favorable conditions – moisture, warmth, plenty of prey and tolerant inmates – house centipedes will take

full advantage and reproduce with regularity. Females are capable of laying 35 to 150 eggs each breeding cycle, year after year.

Yep, you read correctly.

Years, plural. House centipedes can be astoundingly long-lived. Estimates range from three to seven years, a span I’m sure you’ll agree is Eek!straordinary.

D-303: ‘Configurations’ won’t change after ruling

CHARLES – In light of a hearing Wednesday on the Richmond-Davis schools litigation, St. Charles School District 303 officials Friday released an update stating that the “configurations and programs” at the schools will remain in place. “... The Kane County Circuit Court affirmed that the decision to reconfigure Davis and Richmond was completely within the legal rights and authority of the District 303 Board of Education,” states a letter signed by board President Steven Spurling and Vice President Kathleen Hewell.

“This means that the configurations and programs at Davis and Richmond will remain in place, but that the district must also ensure that the procedural requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation are satisfied.”

The letter goes on to say that district officials expect the court to clarify specific steps they need to take and that the district intends to fully comply.

“This will likely include increased parental participation in school planning, which is something we embrace,” states the release. “We will also comply with the court’s directive to provide additional support to underperforming students.”

Judge David Akemann issued a ruling earlier this month on the case, which challenged the legality of reconfiguring Davis and Richmond elementary schools into schools serving grades K-2 and 3-5, respectively. Parents, who filed the lawsuit in 2011, alleged the district circum-

vented No Child Left Behind regulations when it did so.

Akemann ruled in favor of the parents. He ordered the district to take corrective action in developing a revised School Improvement Plan and Corrective Action Plan for Davis and Richmond within six months.

“When the district says the reconfiguration was legal, they’re making a broad generalization,” said Timothy Dwyer, the attorney for the parents. “The court on Wednesday said in terms of boundaries, the district has the general powers to create its own local attendance boundaries. That was just part of the lawsuit.”

The district’s letter also states the attorney for the original plaintiffs – Dwyer – is “threatening to file appeals and/or new lawsuits against District 303” unless the district agrees to pay the attorney’s fees and costs, which are in the six-figures. The board has rejected the demand, according to the letter.

Dwyer said he didn’t know the grounds for that statement, as he has not indicated that he plans any further action.

“They probably know that the court’s order opens up a wealth of potential liability for them,” he said.

As the case moves forward, Dwyer said he hopes board members stay true to their word about increasing parent involvement.

“If anything good comes out of this ... hopefully they’ll involve the parents and get their opinions and input instead of just saying, ‘Here’s our plan, we’re going to approve it a few weeks,’ ” Dwyer said.

Staudt, 97, of Batavia, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Tower Hill Health Care Center in South Elgin. Bertha was born March 2, 1916, in Dickinson, N.D., the daughter of John and Katherine (Elberg) Schmidt. She was united in marriage to Albert “Albie” Staudt on May 3, 1947.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia since 1952. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosalie Ott; a granddaughter, Stephanie Ott; a great-grandson, Brian; a brother, Nick Schmidt of Dickinson, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albie; brothers, Bill, Albert and Ted; and a sister, Eleanor.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

BATAVIA – Another member of Kane County’s state legislative delegation has announced that he will not seek another term representing the Tri-Cities region in Springfield.

Friday morning, State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, said he intends to make this current term his last in the Illinois General Assembly.

Schmitz first announced the news on his Facebook page, and he confirmed it in a phone conver- Tim Schmitz sation. In his Facebook post, Schmitz said he reached the decision after “long talks with my family” following the death of “a very close family member after a brief illness.”

Schmitz’s father recently died.

Reached by phone later in the morning, Schmitz said each year he would discuss with his family whether he should continue his work as a lawmaker.

“But this year, it was more of, ‘Why should I go again?’ ” Schmitz said. “So I called my wife this morning and told her, ‘I’m doing it.’

“It just feels right. After 16 years in the House, this is the time to do something different.”

Schmitz first was elected to the House in 1999, eventually moving into the post of assistant Republican leader, working beside House Republican Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego.

Cross recently announced his decision to run for Illinois treasurer in 2014. Schmitz’s current term ends January 2015.

Schmitz said he will leave Springfield with “not one regret” over his service.

“I feel really good about my time in Springfield,” he said.

“Anyone crazy enough to run

for it, I recommend it.”

He said he has no plans at this point for what will come next.

“People are saying, ‘Oh, you have a job lined up,’ ” Schmitz said. “But I’m still in Springfield for a while yet. I’m just not going to be on the ballot in March and November next year.”

Schmitz’s announcement marks the second time a member of the local legislative delegation has opted to step out of Springfield. Earlier this summer, State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, who represents southwestern Kane County, announced she also will not seek re-election.

Local politicians said Schmitz’s announcement surprised them. They also lamented his pending departure.

State Rep. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley, who represents a large portion of western Kane County, said Schmitz had served as “a good mentor” to him during their 10 years together in the House.

“I had hoped we could all stay in the fray and make a difference in the next couple of years,” Pritchard said.

Pritchard said he intends to seek re-election in 2014.

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said Schmitz’s departure would mark a loss for the region, as Schmitz “did a lot for his district and the county.”

And Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Schmitz’s pending departure from the state legislature was “a bad day for Batavia.”

“He’s been an important voice for us as he has earned his leadership credentials,” Schielke said.

All said it was too soon to speculate as to who might step into the race to succeed Schmitz, as his announcement was unexpected. However, they said they believed a number of candidates would likely step forward in coming weeks.

Band wins chance to open for country star

Last year, the country band performed at Country Thunder music festival in Wisconsin.

On Sunday, Six String Crossing will open for country star Brantley Gilbert at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet after winning a contest sponsored by US99.5 radio station.

The band was one of six finalists performing this week in front of a panel of judges.

written by St. Charles resident Brandon Williams, the band’s frontman.

The win took Williams by surprise. “I didn’t expect to win,� said Williams, 21, a 2010 St. Charles East High School graduate. “I think we’re just comfortable playing together. We’re a tight band now.� “Mr. Daniels� has already brought Williams good fortune. “I got a showcase in Nashville because of it,� Williams said. “I wrote the song a few years ago, and it always brings a good response from a crowd. It’s also doing well on iTunes.�

Williams said he is looking forward to opening for

Gilbert, who continues to sell out venues throughout the country. “I saw him in Wisconsin at Summerfest,� Williams said. “I like the way he writes music.�

Along with winning the opportunity to open for Gilbert, Six String Crossing also won a $1,000 cash prize, which Williams said the band plans to use toward recording its first professional CD. Williams said he is overwhelmed by the success the band already has achieved. “I never would have expected to play at the House of Blues or win a US99 contest,� he said. “We have a name that people recognize now.�

“I’ve had a front row seat to the county clerk’s office and the elections process here in the county for the last nine years,” Davoust said. “You get to election night and see those kinds of turnouts, it’s disheartening.

“I think we can do better.”

Among other ideas, Davoust said he believes the county can do more to reach out to “Spanish-speakers” to increase voter participation among the county’s growing Hispanic population.

He also said he believes the county should do a better job of selecting polling places.

“We need to select good locations for polling places, and then commit to them

long term,” Davoust said.

“We can’t have people voting in different places each time they go to vote.”

Davoust stopped short of saying if Cunningham has “done a good job,” saying he believes Cunningham “has done a lot of good things through the years.”

“But I believe we can, with a fresh perspective and ideas, take it from where it is to something better.”

Cunningham said he intends to officially announce his candidacy for re-election as clerk next week at an event in Aurora.

He said he believes Davoust is “a nice guy” and has “a right to run.”

But Cunningham said he intends to base his campaign on his “skills, experience and achievements.”

“I’m not going to run against Mark,” he said.

He said he, too, would like to see the clerk’s office boost voter turnout, but he said such initiatives would require a larger budget, which the county’s current financial difficulties likely preclude.

“My job is to provide convenient places to vote, and then to give a fair and honest count at the end of the evening,” Cunningham said.

“And I think we have the best staff and one of the best operating clerk’s offices in the United States.”

ST. CHARLES – One of the Tri-Cities’ representatives on the Kane County Board intends to run for a new job next year, challenging for the office of Kane County clerk.

Kane County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said he is circulating nominating petitions to place his name on the ballot for the March 2014 Republican primary election against incumbent Kane County Clerk John “Jack” Cunningham.

Davoust is in the midst of his third consecutive term on the County Board.

Cunningham, of Aurora, has served as county clerk since 2002.

The clerk’s office over-

sees a number of functions in Kane County, including overseeing elections in the county outside of the city of Aurora; keeping birth, death and marriage records; and calculating property tax levies for local governments, including school districts, cities and the county itself.

Davoust said, if elected, he would focus on improving Mark elections in Kane County.

Davoust Particularly, he said he believes the county clerk could do more to boost voter education and participation.

Davoust lamented elections that produce “turnouts of just 11 percent, 13 percent.”

GENEVA – The owners of a downtown nightclub will face a hearing to answer charges that they violated city rules when they allowed liquor to be served after 2 a.m. for a party at the club that included several celebrity guests late last month.

Friday, the city of Geneva announced that Mayor Kevin Burns, acting as the city’s liquor commissioner, will hold a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Friday on charges against EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva.

According to the notice, the city has alleged that EvenFlow was open from 2 a.m. to 5:45 a.m. Aug. 25, at which time it “sold, furnished, gave away, or permitted the consumption of alcoholic liquors” on its premises, in violation of the terms of its liquor license.

The matter stems from tickets for public intoxication issued to Hollywood celebrities in town Aug. 25 for a charity event hosted by TV personality

From that event at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles, the celebrities moved to EvenFlow for a private after party.

Those ticketed at 5:45 a.m. outside EvenFlow for public intoxication included reality TV and soap opera star Kelly Monaco; celebrity dance instructor Sergey Onik; movie and TV actor Heath Freeman; McCarthy’s sister, Joanne McCarthy; and two Geneva residents.

EvenFlow owners have maintained they did not violate the city’s liquor ordinance, saying last call was at 1:50 a.m. that morning and that those cited for public intoxication were still drunk from drinks served before 2 a.m.

The police report, however, said those cited told police they had drank alcohol until moments before they stepped outside, shortly before 5:45 a.m.

If EvenFlow is convicted on the charges, it would mark the establishment’s third liquor code violation, and its second for serving alcohol after 2 a.m.

The hearing will be open to the public.

No wrongdoing, but DUI reporting situation is still unfortunate

The ‘capacity to care’ The United Way of Central Kane County has a mission. And that mission is boldly posted on its website: “To foster our community’s capacity to care for one another by connecting resources to programs helping local people change their lives.”

That’s one admirable goal. And the United Way of Central Kane County has done much to achieve what it has set out to do.

But its work isn’t over.

The nonprofit organization kicked off its annual fundraising campaign this week.

Its goal? To raise $450,000, which will go toward assisting 27 agencies and 35 programs.

What the organization collects will help local agencies such as TriCity Family Services, the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council, Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice and Suicide

Prevention Services.

It’s easy to give.

Or – for those who would like to get their co-workers involved – they can call Paula Yensen, executive director of the United Way of Central Kane County, at 630-377-1930 to set up a workplace visit.

The results of an investigation into DUI reporting errors stemming from the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office were announced this week.

No criminal conduct or intentional wrongdoing was found, stated Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

The Kane County Chronicle reported extensively on the DUI reporting issue in June, noting the records for more than a thousand people charged with DUI and other serious traffic offenses had not successfully made it to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office.

While it’s a relief to know nothing contrived occurred under the

leadership of former Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller, it is still concerning that so many DUI records were backlogged.

In addition, it seems difficult to say with certainty that the backlog didn’t affect those whose driving records were stuck in the system – McMahon said it’s unlikely the errors would have affected how the state’s attorney’s office prosecuted cases.

Current Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell said 3,667 cases out of 13,703 remain to be audited. We encourage Hartwell’s office to expedite that process as quickly as possible and provide any necessary resolutions for those affected.

We don’t think anyone begrudges these people a reasonable meal while they’re representing our interests, but $297 for three people.

Clean up after your dog I am turning the corner in front of the Fourth Street school building, and I noticed a big pile of dog doo doo, and I wish whoever owns the dog would please clean up after it. It happens way too often, and it’s really inconsiderate, especially when small children come to the little park on Fourth Street.

Police: Woman pleads guilty to prostitution

J i n g Zhang, 51, of Chicago was arrested Jing Zhang March 7 after she offered to perform a sex act on an undercover St. Charles police officer for $50, records show.

by St. Charles police with criminal sexual assault of a teenager.

Jacob A. Mayes, of the 48W500 block of Whispering Oak Drive near Hampshire, was charged Sept. 3 with criminal sexual abuse of a Jacob A. victim 13 to 17 Mayes years old. He posted $150 bail and was released.

A court hearing is set for Oct. 10. The assault occurred in January.

“It’s been under investigation since January,” St. Charles police public information officer Lisa Blackwell said. “The department had been waiting for charges to be approved by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.”

Geneva to conduct water flow tests next week GENEVA – The city of Geneva will be conducting water flow tests from the Fox River to Randall Road from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday.

The testing provides valuable information to Geneva’s fire and water departments on water supplies available for firefighters and where water infrastructure upgrades may be needed.

Geneva residents living on the west side might experience rusty water during or

immediately after the testing.

The water is safe to drink, but residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes to flush them out if they notice any discoloration.

Residents should refrain from doing laundry until the water is clear.

ELBURN

Massage parlor in compliance, so village drops suit

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The village of Elburn has dropped its case against the owner of a massage parlor. Elburn had charged Xiaomei-Feng Castro with operation of an unpermitted business, and a bench trial had been scheduled for Friday.

But village attorney Brian O’Connor said the village has decided not to proceed with prosecuting the violation.

“Our building commissioner went to the property, and the premises now comply with the village’s zoning ordinance,” O’Connor said after the hearing at the branch court on Randall Road in St. Charles.

O’Connor said having a standalone massage parlor is not permitted in that business district. But he said a massage parlor is permitted in connection with another business.

It appears the business, Asian Massage and Body Works, 151 E. Route 38, is now also being used as a tanning salon.

Tanning equipment is now

in place at the business and operational, he said.

Meanwhile, the building’s landlord must pay Elburn restitution, according to Kane County court records.

Elburn Building Commissioner Thomas Brennan filed complaints in July against the landlord and Castro, because the village’s zoning code did not permit an adult massage parlor in that business district.

The use of the property changed from a tanning and nail salon to a massage facility after April 1, according to the complaint.

Representatives for the landlord, Nevada company Redoaks, did not appear in court last month, records show.

The village was granted a motion for default judgment, which O’Connor described as standard procedure.

Elburn asked that Redoaks pay for Brennan’s time enforcing the matter as well as the village’s attorney fees, according to records.

Records indicate Redoaks must pay $2,655 in costs and fines, including $1,765 in restitution.

REDISCOVERING FORM Bulldogs bounce Vikings with 29-point rout

It wasn’t until about 11 minutes later that the Bulldogs figured most things – let alone the football – were bouncing their way in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener.

Batavia scored seven touchdowns in a 49-20 rout of its longtime rival, but only one of those scoring plays came with just 10 Bulldogs on the field. Geneva ostensibly owned a man advantage when the Bulldogs’ Anthony Moneghini scored from three yards out with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter.

“We had no idea. We were just so pumped up with adrenaline at that point,” Bulldogs junior right tackle Jack Breshears said. “We had no idea until after the play was done.”

Batavia (2-1, 1-0 UEC River) rebounded from last week’s home loss to Richards with 271 rushing yards against Geneva (1-2, 0-1).

The Vikings were in position to possibly draw within a touchdown in the closing minutes of the second quarter, but Forrest Gilbertson intercepted Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina in the end zone on a ball that tipped off a Vikings wide receiver.

A pair of illegal motion penalties in goal-to-go situations preceded the turnover.

“Two motion calls out of the tailback,” Vikings coach Rob Wicinski said. “I can’t remember the last time that’s happened to me.”

Leading, 21-7, at halftime, Batavia recovered the second-half kickoff when Howie Morgano’s high kick angling down the right sideline took a funky backward bounce toward a sprinting Compton.

The Bulldogs cashed in 30 yards and three plays later on a 2-yard Anthony Scaccia touchdown run.

Apparently, the Bulldogs’ front five still was feasting on leftover momentum from defensive coordinator Matt Holm’s team dinner speech Thursday.

“We just found the power and everything,” Breshears said. “We just stuck together and kept on going.”

Geneva transformed the turnover into a touchdown when Santacaterina visited the end zone on a 1-yard plunge 2:47 before halftime. After forcing a punt, the Vikings threatened to draw even closer to their century-old rival – Friday marked the schools’ 93rd meeting since 1913 – but then Gilbertson swooped in for the interception.

Scaccia finished with two total touchdowns, including a 22-yard screen pass from Coffey. Blake Crowder capped Batavia’s scoring with a 40yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Geneva’s T.J. Miller, who rushed for 162 yards, answered with a 59-yard

TD less than a minute later, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a lopsided margin in Geneva’s in Geneva’s third straight loss in the series.

“You know what, we’re not ready, and I knew it. We’re just not ready to make that step,” Wicinski said. “I think I saw some nice baby steps out of the offensive line. I was really pleased with that. Batavia’s student section mirrored its muses’ aggressiveness throughout the night. The traveling Dog Pound chanted “I believe that we will win” after the first play from scrimmage, an eight-yard completion from Coffey to Michael Moffatt. The white-clad group busted out its first “We can’t hear you” only moments after Coffey’s first touchdown capped a 9-play, 60 yard drive in 4:13.

Bulldogs’ blowout win speaks volumes GENEVA – St. Charles East and St. Charles North clawed their way to an overtime classic a few miles to the north, completing their game long after the Batavia football team already was finished chewing up Geneva on Friday night at Burgess Field.

The Bulldogs’ win might have lacked the drama of the other Tri-Cities rumble, but the loudest statement of the week was made by the twotime defending Upstate Eight Conference River champions.

Batavia’s 49-20 thrashing of Geneva served as quite the tone-setter for the conference race.

“It’s exactly that, it makes a statement to the conference that a loss isn’t going to get us down,” Batavia quarterback Micah Coffey said, referring to last week’s loss to Richards.

“We’re going to get right back up and get right back at it. Obviously this is a great win.”

One week after Geneva played a fairly competitive game against DuPage Valley Conference giant Wheaton North, Batavia’s smoother ride against Geneva made comparisons fair game.

“It proved, I think, that our [nonconference] schedule was really good,” said Batavia coach Dennis Piron, whose team beat Glenbard North before losing its first

The Bulldogs were agitated about last week’s loss and delighted to take a crack at their archrivals on turf, armed with an athleticism advantage that became readily apparent.

They blew Geneva off the ball throughout the early stages, needing only a quarter and 11 seconds to roar to a 21-0 lead.

As much as Batavia dominated most of the first half, the Vikings had it first-and-goal in the last minute of the second quarter with a chance to make it a one-score game at the break.

But Batavia’s Forrest Gilbertson picked off Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina to preserve the Bulldogs’ 21-7 lead at halftime, and any remnants of momentum for Geneva were sucked out of Burgess

Field when the Vikings were beaten to a pooch kick to start the second half. The Bulldogs recovered and put the game on lock-down with an Anthony Scaccia touchdown run three plays later.

Scaccia, Coffey and two-way standout Michael Moffatt were among numerous Bulldogs who looked a cut-above their opponents when it came to sheer explosiveness.

“I really felt we had the speed advantage coming into this game,” Coffey said. “Obviously playing a team like Rich-

ards last week really prepares us and really picks up our speed level to where [the game] kind of slows down because Richards is one of the fastest teams in the whole state.”

The Bulldogs did their best to put conference parity thoughts to rest with their in-command outing. Both St. Charles schools will have something to say about a potential Batavia three-peat, but the Bulldogs vaulted back into clear front-runner status, if there were any doubts leading up to Friday.

For Geneva, the season reaches an early turning point.

The Vikings have generally been better than what they showed Friday, but at 1-2, any lingering pity or self-doubt could spell disastrous toward their playoff hopes.

Friday’s drubbing showed the Vikings aren’t conference championship material, but that doesn’t mean a successful, playoff season is beyond their grasp.

“They’ve got to understand this is a process,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said of his players. “I think they do. Like I’ve said from day one, there’s good football players here, we’re just a little immature at handling our stuff, protecting the ball. Things that mature teams don’t do.”

Midway through the fourth quarter, Batavia’s robust student section chanted “Why are you leaving?” at some of the Vikings fans who understandably had seen enough.

For Bulldogs-backers, though, the night was young.

In a rivalry that dates back 100 years, there haven’t been too many nights as perfectly suited for Bulldog woofing as this one.

Barry comes to St. Charles East’s rescue

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East’s Brannon Barry was frustrated for most of four quarters Friday night at Norris Stadium, but the senior standout made his presence felt in a huge way in overtime to help the Saints edge crosstown rival North, 28-21.

Barry, a wide receiver, scored on a 10-yard run in the extra session to give the Saints (3-0, 1-0 UEC River) their first lead since the first quarter, then broke up a pass

at the goal line to preserve the victory.

“It was a slot reverse,” Barry said of the touchdown run. “We made a last-minute change and it just worked out for the best.”

Barry’s dramatics came up after a wild fourth quarter in which the Saints scored a pair of touchdowns and had to complete a two-point conversion to force overtime.

Trailing 14-7, Ramon Lopez scored on a 4-yard run to pull East within one early in the final period, but the extra-point attempt sailed wide right.

Kurtz had a monster game, grinding his way to 224 yards on 36 carries and scoring all three of North’s touchdowns.

He also had a strong game at

linebacker, helping the North Stars keep the Saints’ offense bottled up most of the game.

East tied the score with 3:15 left in regulation when quarterback Jimmy Mitchell hit a wide-open Erik Anderson in the flat for a 34-yard scoring play and Mitchell connected with Mitch Munroe for the two-point conversion.

“We run bleachers every single day,” Barry responded when asked how the Saints were able to change the momentum in the fourth quarter.

“We don’t get beat because we have so much stamina. That’s what we tell ourselves. When

the second half comes, we’ve got to work our butts off.”

The Saints had started out strong when Mitchell hit Munroe in stride for a 90-yard scoring strike down the right sideline on a 3rd-and-18 play on their first possession, but the North defense and the North Stars’ strong running game controlled the game for the next two quarters.

North rolled up 315 yards on the ground, including 79 by quarterback Erik Miller.

Mitchell threw for 200 yards to account for most of East’s offense.

Knights’ offense too much for Sterling

By TY REYNOLDS treynolds@shawmedia.com STERLING – The Kaneland football team were hitting on all cylinders from the start Friday night, and the Sterling Golden Warriors had no answer for it.

The Knights (3-0) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, five of their six in the first half, and seven of their first eight through the middle of the third quarter. The end result was a 48-7 Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover blowout that saw the running clock for the final 16 minutes of the game.

“We’ve got a lot of guys who always make big plays,” Kaneland quarterback Drew David said, “and we did a lot of good things tonight.”

David threw for 229 yards and two scores and ran for another touchdown, and Nate Dyer led the ground game with 97 yards rushing and three TDs. Kaneland outgained the Golden Warriors 369-80 in to-

Dyer added a 4-yard run in the final minute of the first half. Dylan Nauert turned a jet sweep into a 19-yard TD run on Kaneland’s first drive of the third quarter, then David found Nauert at the goal line for a 3-yard TD pass to set the running clock in motion.

O’Connor was a Big Northern East All-Conference player during his Sophomore and Junior seasons, and his junior year he led the team in assists. After playing in the only loss of the season so far, the coach from the opposing team gave O’Connor great compliments on how hard he worked.

Moffatt plays wide receiver and center for Batavia Football. He also holds, returns kicks, and punts. Overall, he is a do-it-all player!

In June, Nathaniel was invited to the Midwest Distance Gala, where he won the 800m run, breaking a school record set in 1975. His time is the fastest in the state and ranks in the top 10 in the country. He was a member of the state 2A champion 4x800 relay team in the Spring.

A Northern Illinois recruit, Krage has shined as an outside hitter for the North Stars, who won the Plainfield North tournament over Labor Day weekend.

Marmion makes up for sluggish start

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Marmion football team overcame a poor first quarter to defeat St. Edward, 27-10, in the teams’ Suburban Christian Blue Conference opener on Friday night.

The first quarter was all St. Edward as Marmion only ran five plays.

On the Cadets’ first play from scrimmage at Marmion’s 22-yard line, the Green Wave intercepted a Brock Krueger pass. The drive stalled at the 10-yard line and St. Edward settled for a 25-yard Joe French field goal.

Marmion (3-0, 1-0 SCC Blue) couldn’t muster a first down on its next possession and the Green Wave held the ball the rest of the quarter, starting a drive on their own 20-yard line.

They finished Brock Krueger the drive early in the second quarter when Davontae Elam (81 yards on 26 carries) scored on a 2-yard run 44 seconds into the period to take a 10-0 lead.

Luck turned Marmion’s way later in the quarter. The Cadets started their second

drive of the quarter from St. Edward’s 37 thanks to a high punt that went out of bounds.

Two plays later, the Cadets’ Mike Montalbano scored on a 29-yard run.

On the Green Wave’s next series, Jake Gallaher intercepted a Bryan O’Neil pass.

The pick, coupled with a St. Edward penalty, put the Ca-

dets on the Green Wave’s 13yard line. On the third play of the series, running back Jordan Glasgow, playing in his first game of the season (ankle sprain), scampered 5 yards for the TD to put Marmion up 1310 when the PAT failed.

The junior running back was used sparingly, carrying the ball only three times for a total of 35 yards.

St. Edward (2-1, 0-1) attempted to tie the game up with five seconds left in the half on another French field goal, but it failed.

The Cadets’ defense solved the Green Wave’s offense in the second half. St. Edward was

shut out in the last two quarters, running only six series and making four first downs.

Marmion finally put some distance between itself and the Green Wave in the fourth quarter. Montalbano (97 yards on nine carries) scored his second touchdown at the 7:30 mark with a 7-yard run to put the Cadets up, 20-13.

Cadets sophomore Lucas Warren (67 yards in 12 carries) scored the final TD of the night with a 14-yard run with a minute to go in the game.

Marmion travels to Woodstock Friday night to battle SCC Blue rival Marian Central.

Duo dominate in Spartans’ win

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com PALOS HEIGHTS – They’re called the beasts in the backfield, and in the St. Francis football team’s 49-0 whipping Friday of Chicago Christian, they showed why.

Senior running back James Butler and junior tailback T.J. Jackson – the beasts that make up St. Francis’ formidable running duo – each had big running touchdowns in the first half as the Spartans breezed to their third win of the season.

Chicago Christian only suited up 19 players and they were undersized, especially on the offensive and defensive lines. Despite the fact, the Knights forced a three and out on St. Francis’ first offensive possession as Butler was dropped for a two-yard loss.

The Spartans quickly got the ball back and scored on their next seven possessions.

St. Francis quarterback Zach Prociuk, who set up the first of two Butler scores with a 27-yard scamper to the Chicago Christian three yard line, was effusive in praising of his backfield mates.

field – it’s hard not to give them the ball when they’re back there,” Prociuk said.

“When you’re running behind T.J., it’s just phenomenal and our offensive line blocks every time. They’re big, they’re fast and they move the ball.”

Butler is the smaller of the two backs, standing at only 5-foot-9, but makes up for his stature with a low running level and an incredible burst.

With Jackson leading the way, Butler ran for an 82yard touchdown run, going untouched behind Jackson to put St. Francis up, 28-0.

Butler is a legitimate Division I prospect with a handful of programs hot on his tail.

The 207-pound senior is taking in the Notre Dame – Purdue game from the Boilermakers’ sideline tonight.

“It feels good to do well personally but it feels better that we have a good team,” Butler said. “It makes it even

Butler was forced to sit out last season after transferring from Bartlett. He made the most of his six carries against Chicago Christian, scoring twice while gaining 92 yards.

Jackson scored on a 50yard run through the center of the line to give St. Francis a comfortable 35-0 lead.

The Spartans can now turn their attention to a Week 4 showdown with fellow 3-0 power Montini.

Along with its running back tandem, St. Francis has the dual-threat Prociuk, who scored a rushing touchdown while also throwing a pair of 35-yard touchdown passes.

“Zach Prociuk is really improving as a quarterback – we’re really happy with him,” St. Francis coach Greg Purnell said. “We’re going to enjoy the game tonight and worry about Montini tomorrow at 9 a.m.”

Prociuk’s 35-yard touchdown pass to 6-8 wide-out Adam Hart made it 42-0 with 3:42 to go in the second quarter, forcing a running clock the entire second half.

Senior Jenny Mizikar recently became the sixth Batavia girls tennis player to surpass 100 career victories. Should she and No. 1 doubles partner Amelia Cogan keep rolling – the pair is 6-0 entering today’s St. Charles East Invitational – Hannah Potter’s school record of 115 wins is well within reach. The landmark was on Mizikar’s radar, she said in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, but a berth in the state meet next month remains the ultimate goal. Here’s more from Mizikar’s conversation with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. The following is an edited transcript:

What’s the feeling about the team the first few weeks out of the gate?

I’m feeling really good.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.

We’ve had a good start so far.

Hopefully, we can just keep

working harder. We’re going to be playing some hard teams coming up here soon, so hopefully we can step it up some and get some wins.

The morale around here has been high for some time.

Where does that come from?

I think, just especially since we’ve done really well in the past (including three straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division titles), that we want to continue the tradition. We don’t really want to [drop off]. I think we just are all really excited to do well and kind of show the school that, ‘Oh, our tennis team is really good.’

How much were you following the 100-victory mark?

Well, it was always in the back of my head, because at the beginning of the season, I had 90-something – 97, I think. And so I knew and I had my goal that I wanted to.

I’m trying to beat her record, so hopefully, I get it.

What’s worked well with you and Amelia the past few years?

We’re really close, on and off the court, so our chemistry on the court, we can get along and we know our playing styles. So we know what she’s good at. We know

Any recruiters been knocking on your door?

Yeah. I’m thinking of just going to some smaller [NCAA Division III] schools. I really like [Wisconsin-Whitewater] and some in Michigan and North Carolina. So I have to figure out if I want to stay close or go farther.

How much of the U.S. Open did you watch?

Actually, not much of it because school started and

everything. I watched the first day and then the finals.

I’m not a big fan of [women’s singles champion Serena Williams], but I guess it’s good for her for doing well.

The team was moved to the St. Charles East Sectional this season and you play at East’s tournament this weekend before the conference dual.

What’s the outlook?

There’s going to be some rough teams this weekend, so it’ll definitely help us if we do play East with the sectional. So we need to do our best that match and in the tournament ... It’s always a good challenge.

Is it ever distracting when cars or people pass by the back fence, or are you guys always in the zone?

We’re pretty much always in the zone. There’s always a few people that will sit right behind the fence, but we just try to ignore it and keep playing.

The Warriors (1-2) will brace for another challenge in Week 4, as they’re set to travel to 3A champion Aurora Christian. Wheaton Academy is set to play four of its next five games on the road.

The Burlington Central football team experienced both sentiments after blanking Rockford Christian, 34-0, in its Big Northern Conference East opener Friday night.

“It’s great for us to get that first win,” Rockets coach Rich Crabel said. “We know we still have things to take care of, but we’re happy with where we’re at right now.”

Central (1-2, 1-0 BNC East) moved backup Parth Patel to quarterback and starter Casey Matthews elsewhere in the formation due to some injuries at running back. It didn’t seem to faze Matthews, who had 106 yards of total offense and two interceptions – including one he returned for a touchdown.

Patel finished 9 of 11 for 163 yards and a touchdown to Ian Napiorkowski. Reilly Marino paced the ground game with 104 yards and a touchdown.

“They’re happy. They’re excit-

ed. They know we’ve got a big game with Harvard next week,” Crabel said. “That team will come with a chip on their shoulder and they’ll come to hit us, so we have to be ready.”

Idaho has fallen on hard times since beating NIU

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When Northern Illinois and Idaho last met in 2009, the Vandals were the last visiting team to win at Huskie Stadium, escaping with a three-point victory.

When the Huskies and Vandals meet up at 4 p.m. this afternoon, it will be at the Kibbie Dome, not Huskie Stadium.

And, NIU is a program that has won two Mid-American Conference titles and played in a BCS bowl since the teams’ last contest, while Idaho has fallen on hard times.

The Vandals have won just nine games the past three seasons combined.

Idaho went 1-11 in 2012, and fired coach Robb Akey with four games remaining.

On top of everything, the Vandals were the odd man out when it came to conference realignment, forcing them to compete as an independent this season because of the demise of the Western Athletic Conference.

Thankfully for Idaho, the school will join the Sun Belt

next year, but things haven’t gone well on the field so far in 2013. In losses at North Texas and Wyoming, Idaho has been outscored, 82-16, and has given up an average of 577.5 yards of total offense.

With what Jordan Lynch and the NIU offense are capable of, there could be a big number next to the visiting team on the scoreboard this afternoon.

However, two things Huskies coach Rod Carey pointed out are that Idaho is hungry and playing in its home opener. Carey, who coached at Idaho when he was the offensive line coach at North Dakota in 2010, called the Kibbie Dome a tough place to play.

“I know this, we’ll get their best shot because it’s their first home game and I expect them to come out on cloud nine,” Carey said. “I’ve [coached] at the Kibbie Dome before and that place is a hard environment to play.”

Paul Petrino – Bobby Petrino’s brother – is in his first year as Vandals head coach after spending 2012 as Arkansas’ offensive coordinator, and holding the same position at Illinois the previous two seasons.

The St. Charles East girls tennis team held a car wash Aug. 24 at McDowell Inc. as a fundraiser for the Northern Illinois Foodbank and purchased backpags and school supplies for needy children. The team raised about $1,000, contributing $700 to the Northern Illinois Food Bank and used most of the remainder to purchase the backpacks and school supplies. Varsity team member Sam Maze purchased 15 backpacks and school supplies to support 1st Place Chiropractic’s efforts in collecting backpacks and supplies for needy children in the area.

The filled backpacks were given to Stephanie Baxter, the homeless liaison for District 303.

Josh Sweet scholarship fundraiser set for Sept. 29 For The KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE On Sept. 29, the Mill Creek Golf Club hosts the Josh Sweet Memorial Golf Scramble, a benefit golf event in support of the Josh Sweet Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Open to the entire community, the scramble honors the life of Sweet.

Sweet’s life was cut short Aug. 1 but he touched so many lives in his 17 years; his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

The scramble was organized to raise money for the scholarship fund established in Sweet’s name. “ J o s h was a great friend,” Alex Schreiber, a Josh Sweet senior and member of the golf team at Geneva High School, who came up with the idea for the memorial scholarship fund, said in a news release. “He was always volunteering, and had a positive impact on many GHS students with his friendship and energy.”

Check-in for the scramble at Mill Creek Club on Herrington Drive in Geneva begins at noon, followed by a putting contest at 12:30 p.m.

A shotgun start will mark the scramble’s beginning at 1 p.m.. The $60-a-person cover includes greens fee, cart, driving range, meals, and gifts.

A raffle and prizes at the clubhouse at 7 p.m. are possible thanks to the contributions of BrandWeavers for Health, Fox Valley Orthopedics, SternbergLighting, New Wave Lacrosse, Mer-

cedes-Benz of St. Charles, and the Geneva Vikings German Club. Separate donations from those not attending the event are also appreciated.

Schreiber wanted to do something special to remember and honor his friend, and to highlight how many people Sweet touched in his life. Together, with input from his father Peter Schreiber, they came up with the idea for the scholarship and supporting golf scramble. Moved by the gesture, the Sweet family enthusiastically supported the scholarship honoring their son.

An all-around athlete, Sweet’s true passion was lacrosse, which he’d played since his freshman year, as well as during the past two summers with the New Wave Summer Travel Team.

Sweet was slated to play defensive end this year for the Vikings having played football for seven years with the Tri-City Chargers Youth Football Association, for three years at GHS and two years in middle school at Geneva North.

Sweet’s giving nature led him to doing outreach work with the Christ Community Church’s Kids World Tech Team for six years.

In addition to being involved in several youth ministries, Sweet volunteered his time to the Geneva All Sports Booster, Marklund, and the Tri City Chargers.

Weighing in on the ‘Pressures Teens Face’ with BATV’s ‘Viewpoint’ panel Kathy Gresey, editor of the Kane County Chronicle and fantabulous host of BATV’s newest show, “Viewpoint,” recently invited me to participate in a panel discussion about “Pressures Teens Face” for the show’s second episode, which aired last week.

This installment of “Viewpoint,” a program that presents in-depth panel discussions about hot topics concerning residents of our community, also featured Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez; Kane County Coroner Rob Russell; Batavia High School Dean of Students Erin Reid; and Hearts of Hope Director Lea Minalga.

Gresey, who moderated the discussion, encouraged me to bring my kids along – and even suggested they participate. But, well, “They’d rather poke their eyes out with a hot poker,” I said.

Yeah, that about sums it up.

Because, as Reid pointed out before the tape began rolling, “Teens spend 100 percent of their time figuring out how to avoid embarrassment.”

Yep, I get that. They’re acutely aware of themselves and of others, and of their quest to “belong” – which is, I think, the primary job of adolescence.

Figuring out how – and with whom – to attach, while also striving to gain some measure of competence and independence, takes work. Add to that school, sports and other extracurricular activities, which, while fun, do involve some stressors. Throw in a healthy dose of chores and other familial responsibilities and it’s no wonder teens feel pressure.

But on top of all of that, “They are bombarded with information on a daily basis, with the advent of the Internet,”

Reid agrees.

“They are never disconnected,” she said. “They’re always plugged in. I don’t feel like downtime, even in their own minds, ever really happens.”

For some kids, this cumulative load of pressures, which often includes the drive to succeed and achieve, can lead some kids to choose to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, says Minalga.

Add bullying to the mix and it’s a wonder some kids are brave enough to get out of bed every day. The thing is, while we all face these pressures, kids and adults alike (though the details may be different), teens must face them without the benefit of life experience and an adult brain, including a fully developed frontal lobe, where reasoning and judgment are processed.

In males, the frontal lobe is not fully functioning until around the age of 25.

That’s where parenting comes in, early and often. And when we have these conversations with our kids, about drugs, sex, bullying or whatever, it’s helpful to pose hypothetical scenarios and help them to brainstorm about how they might handle them. It doesn’t hurt to let them know, too, that if they ever feel like talking, you’ll be there to listen. It may take a few false starts for a kid to trust the process, but sometimes that’s all the encouragement that’s needed, to get the ball rolling.

Talking certainly wasn’t an issue for this group of panelists.

We even had a laugh or two, and volunteered candid memories of our own adolescence. It was enlightening. Plus, I learned that I talk too much with my hands. At least my mom and my daughter, who already viewed the video on the BATV website (mybatv.com/ show/viewpoint/), think so.

Oh, and the poor waiter at Bien Trucha, who tried to pour water for the people dining at the next table as I gestured wildly during lunch with a friend a few days ago?

Yeah, he probably thinks so, too. In my defense, those cute tables are kinda close together, but I digress.

Toward the close of the panel discussion, Russell mentioned a program he’s exploring, one already in place in other counties, where teens are allowed to tour the coroner’s office. It’s a real eye-opener, apparently, where potential consequences of risky behavior are plain as day. They’re also encouraged to write their own obituaries, too.

That’ll stop you in your tracks in a hurry!

Something else Russell mentioned as we closed our discussion – about his own family’s tradition, growing up, of reaching out and supporting others – really moved me and inspired me to recall why I think we’re all “here,” after all – to help each other.

He and the others, they get it.

They’re good people, in my opinion, but check out the video and decide for yourself. And don’t hesitate to call on them. I have a hunch, they’ll be there. For you and for your kids.

Crates are filled with these plump promises of harbingers of spring. I do admire these bulbs – so much so, it is difficult to decide which new varieties I should add to my landscape each fall.

But I LOVE the “minor” bulbs, referred to as minor because of their small size, both in bulb and flower.

They are so easy to plant – a good jab into the soil with a trowel is all the effort needed.

Here are a few of my favorites.

• Grape hyacinths. My landscape wouldn’t be complete without grape hyacinths. Their fragrant flowers look like upside-down bunches of grapes on 6-inch spikes.

They form lovely drifts carpeting the spaces beneath shrubs and between perennials.

Minor bulbs deserve major place in garden • BULBS Continued from page 35 Plant grape hyacinth bulbs 3 inches deep and apart in sun or part shade.

As much as I love their spring bloom, I appreciate grape hyacinths even more for their usefulness in autumn.

Whenever I plant tulips, daffodils or alliums, I throw a few grape hyacinths in the planting holes, too. Because they send up their foliage in the fall, they serve as garden markers to remind me where my larger bulbs are planted, reducing the chance I will accidentally drive a shovel into previously planted bulbs when planting new ones.

• Siberian squill. Also known as Scilla siberica, it is best planted in large numbers to show off their intense color.

The electric blue flowers bloom over grass-like foliage and reach about 6 inches tall as they naturalize freely.

Plant these bulbs 3 or 4 inches deep and apart in a sunny or partly shady spot with rich, well-drained soil. Siberian squill even grows nicely under evergreen trees.

• Snowdrops. Snowdrops are the first bulbs to bloom in my gardens. Delicate, nodding, bell-shaped white flowers often push their way through the snow. Snowdrops are unappealing to rodents – quite a benefit if you have to protect your

bulbs from squirrels or chipmunks. They perform best in part shade making them the perfect choice for a woodland or shady rock garden. Plant them 2 to 4 inches deep and apart.

• Crocuses. Crocuses are another welcome favorite in the spring. Brightly colored cup-shaped flowers open over grass-like foliage. There are varieties available in striped and solid colors in a large range of brilliant colors from glistening white and sunny yellow to deep velvety purple.

Depending on the type, they grow 3 to 6 inches tall.

Films ‘12 Years a Slave,’ ‘Gravity’ lead impressive program at Toronto film fest

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post TORONTO – The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, which will wrap up this weekend, has always earned high marks for its accessibility, friendliness, ease of maneuvering and – most important of all – a well-balanced and high-quality slate of films from around the world.

But this year, nearly every attendee within earshot agreed: the festival outdid itself, presenting the usual very good movies, but also programming films that promise to restore ambition, scope and a sense of occasion to a cinematic experience that has lately been reduced to a near-constant stream of 4-inch images and random visual data points.

These motion pictures not only make it safe to go back into the movie theater, they make it imperative.

That impulse was first felt last Friday, when the British filmmaker Steve McQueen brought his much-anticipated drama “12 Years a Slave” to the ornate Princess of Wales Theatre, where the audience leapt to its feet after a harrowing but magnificent immersion in the life of Solomon Northrup, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841.

As formally elegant – even abstract – as it was historically detailed, “12 Years a Slave” immediately earned frontrunner status in the festival’s constant Oscar chatter; however understandable, such speculation seemed to trivialize a film that tells a crucial American story but also pushes cinematic grammar forward in important ways.

Most filmgoers were still processing “12 Years a Slave” the next day when Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron took their breath away again with “Gravity,” a stunning 3-D space adventure starring Sandra Bullock that equals “2001: A Space Odyssey” in its technical prowess and visionary storytelling.

On Sunday, the boundary-pushing director Godfrey Reggio – best known for the image-and-sound collage “Koyaanisqatsi” and its successors – presented his new film, “Visitors,” a meticulously constructed black-and-white meditation on the human, natural and built

Reggio’s first film in over a decade consists of a mere 74 shots (as opposed to the hundreds of edits that his “Sqatsi” films contained), which build into a trance-like essay on the notion of spectatorship itself.

The grandeur, ambition and sheer greatness of these works were so impressive and emotionally profound that they threatened to eclipse the merely very good movies, plenty of which were also on hand here throughout the week. By no means should excellent mainstream films like “Rush” (about Formula One racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda), “Dallas Buyers Club” (featuring galvanizing performances from Matthew McConaughey as an HIV-positive Texan in the 1980s and Jared Leto as his unlikely transvestite friend), “Can a Song Save Your Life” (a musical charmer by the director of “Once” starring Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley) or Kelly Reichardt’s environmental thriller “Night Moves” be damned with faint praise simply because they’re terrific

movies and not masterworks. (“Can a Song Save Your Life” was acquired by the Weinstein Company, which was on a buying spree at the festival this year, also picking up “The Railway Man” and “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.”)

If any of the high-profile films at the festival deserve faint praise it’s “August: Osage County,” this year’s Oscar-bait “prestige picture” adapted from Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play and starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts amongst many others. Respectfully “opened up” by director John Wells, this poisonous iteration of Eugene O’Neill by way of Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner features yet more drinkin’, brawlin’ and drawlin’ from the playwright whose last dubious film adaptation was the trailer-trashy caricature “Killer Joe.” As a movie, “Osage County” felt more like a vehicle for actors acting than the kind of cinematic event Toronto audiences had grown used to over the previous weekend.

Overall, the films at this year’s festival represent a great leap forward, not just for the individual filmmakers involved, but for the industry and art form they’re working in.

Second-grader faces schoolyard bullies alone Dear Abby: I’m 8 years old and in second grade. I’m writing because I’m being bullied at school. I’m really smart, and at my school that’s a really bad thing. I try hard to be nice, but here that’s worse than being smart.

The teachers didn’t help me with the bullies, so I stopped telling them. My mom told everyone she could about the bullies, but nobody helps. It keeps getting worse over time. Every day someone picks on me, pushes me or makes fun of me. Please help me. – Feeling Torn In Texas Dear Feeling Torn: Because you haven’t told your teachers that the bullying hasn’t stopped, they may think that it’s no longer going on.

Tell them again what you are experiencing, and be sure your mother knows. She should discuss this with your teacher. If things don’t get better, she needs to talk to the principal and, if necessary, the school board.

As a last resort, your mother should consult a lawyer. You have a right to an education that’s free from this kind of pressure. Lawsuits have been filed and won because school districts didn’t give it the attention they should have. Be sure to show this to your mother and tell her you wrote it.

Dear Abby: I am agoraphobic. Although I have managed to make accommodations for special occasions like birthday parties and dinners with my family, I am not comfortable at extremely large gatherings.

My parents understand this, but my sister and brother-inlaw think that if I’d just “try

harder,” everything would work out. Abby, I must take a mild tranquilizer to go to small gatherings, and I have told them this.

Spinal manipulation can have good results Dear Doctor K: I suffer from low back pain, and I’m thinking of visiting a chiropractor for spinal manipulation treatments. What do you think?

Dear Reader: Spinal manipulation treatments are performed by chiropractors, osteopaths, and some massage and physical therapists. More than one of my patients has tried this treatment for back pain. They usually don’t like to tell me about it, because they think I’ll disapprove.

Actually, I think there is evidence from scientific studies that chiropractic therapy for shortterm or recurrent pain may be at least as effective as the treatments that I have to offer. But there’s not enough evidence to recommend chiropractic care for chronic back pain.

Your spine is made up of a column of interlocking bones called vertebrae. Each vertebra has a circular solid body and a bony ring behind it. The spinal cord travels through the bony ring. Projections called processes extend in several directions from this ring.

Chiropractors apply direct pressure to the processes of one or more vertebrae using a finger or the palm of the hand.

Most manipulations also involve indirect force. The practitioner

When treating people with low back pain, chiropractors and the other health workers may also use other therapies. These include massage, heat and cold therapies, and electrotherapies. For some people, chiropractic care reduces the amount of medication needed to control pain.

A 2010 review looked at 12 studies involving 2,887 people with low back pain. It concluded that chiropractic care improved shortand medium-term pain more than other treatments. These included exercise, physical therapy and medication. But the overall differences were slight – and there was no difference in long-term pain.

People who saw chiropractors also reported less short-term disability compared with people who received other treatments. But again, the difference was small.

On the other hand, studies like this one give us good information about the experience of the average patient. You may or may not be like the “average” patient.

If you have had good relief from spinal manipulation in the past, I would not discourage you from trying it again.

Chiropractic care carries a small degree of risk. That’s especially true for people with neck pain. While I know of patients who have found relief from spinal manipulation of the vertebrae in the neck, I think such treatment is risky. Very rarely, chiropractic manipulations can worsen or even cause additional problems.

You also should avoid spinal manipulation if you have rheumatoid arthritis or nerve-related low back pain. If you’ve been told you have a “slipped disk” or a “herniated disk” that is pinching a nerve and causing pain in your buttock, thigh and lower leg, that’s likely nerve-related pain.

If you do try spinal manipulation, seek out an experienced practitioner. Until there is more evidence, a short-term approach is best. If you don’t experience considerable improvement after about six spinal manipulations, additional treatments aren’t likely to be of much benefit.

Woman surprised family is not largest in Indiana Dr. Wallace: I’m a senior citizen grandmother. My husband and I have 10 children.

All are married, and we are grandparents to 50 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. At our great-granddaughter’s birthday party, I told my daughter, (the birthday girl’s grandmother) that we must have the largest family in the state of Indiana.

To my surprise, I was told that an Indiana native wrote to you and said that she had almost 200 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Is this a fact? – Grandmother, Evansville, Ind. Dear Grandmother: I remember the letter.

It appeared on May 25, 2005, and it was signed by a Mrs. Yoder who lived in Middlebury, Ind. and read my column in The Goshen News.

In her letter, Mrs. Yoder said she was 79 years old, had 13 children, 84 grandchildren and 85 great-grandchildren. My response to her was, “Mrs. Yoder: To have 169 grand and great-grandchildren is a remarkable accomplishment. Every other day, you are celebrating a child’s birthday! What a wonderful experience that must be.”

Dr. Wallace: I’m taking a public speaking course at Orange Coast Community College in Southern California. I really like the class, and I’m learning a lot about speaking in front of a crowd.

This is important because I’d like to become a high school English teacher. I really get nervous, and my palms sweat when I give my talks in front of the class.

She sneaks out of the house in the middle of the night and hangs with kids who also have major control problems. She also has uncontrollable anger and is very aggressive. A private school and counseling has not helped.

Dear Sister: There is no doubt that your sister is out of control, and if things don’t change drastically she is headed for serious trouble. I am familiar with a boot camp in your area that works with boys and is very successful in helping them change direction to a positive lifestyle.

The sooner she enters the program, the better for her, you and your parents.

In today’s deal, it is not so much a case of an unrealistic assumption as being careful not to jump to a conclusion that could be inaccurate. South is in four spades. West leads the heart nine. How should East plan the defense?

The auction was straightforward. South smelled a game, so bid that game.

The defense looks so easy.

East wins with the heart ace (the unnecessarily high card beginning a suit-preference signal for diamonds), cashes the heart king, and continues with the heart 10 (a second suit-preference signal). West ruffs higher than the dummy and shifts to a diamond. East wins with his ace and leads another heart, perhaps promoting a second trump trick for West.

Well, that is the plan, but West cannot ruff higher than the dummy. South wins the third trick, draws trumps, and runs the clubs for an overtrick.

East should take a safety-play. At trick three, he should cash the diamond ace.

Here, West encourages with his 10, and East leads a second diamond to defeat the contract.

But if West has a spade higher than dummy’s seven, he would discourage, and East would go back to hearts.
