s the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks came upon us this week, social media and my own friends and family have reminisced on “where were you” when the tragedy hit.

I was just leaving for work in Lake County from my apartment in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago when – while watching the morning news – I saw a skyscraper on fire. I had no idea of the gravity as I grabbed

my keys and headed out the door.

During my hourlong commute, I listened to talk radio as everything unfolded.

My cousin’s wife was eight months pregnant and working at the Pentagon. I remember struggling with cellphone service to get a hold of my mom and my sister, who also lives in the Washington, D.C. area.

It was early evening before we heard for certain that she was

all right, that she had leaned on two coworkers on either side of her to make up for her not having great balance as they exited the building. A few weeks later, they gave their son the middle name Kip, after Lt. Col. Kip P. Taylor, who died that day.

Each year since, I have photographed memorials and remembrance ceremonies. And each year, I attempt to convey the emotion, patriotism and compas-

sion people feel, and will always feel about 9/11.

STC police urge residents to shine light for domestic violence KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is distributing a limited number of free purple lights to residents who want to help raise awareness of domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The St. Charles Police Department and the Elgin Community Crisis Center are working to light up the Elgin and St. Charles area to raise awareness.

Residents can help the Community Crisis Center by shining a purple light on your porch throughout October.

The Purple Light Nights is a campaign designed to shine a light on a problem that often is silenced by shame.

The porch lights will be given to the first 70 people. Come

to the St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles, during the following hours: 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturdays. It is closed Sundays.

Library to host fall programs

BATAVIA

Library cafe starting a new, healthier chapter

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The cafe at the Batavia Public Library has started a new chapter.

Batavia resident Steven Kilberg recently purchased the 10 South Coffee House and renamed it Chapters Coffeehouse and Cafe. Monday was the first day of business for the new cafe.

The cafe is inside the entrance to the library at 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Kilberg is a former electrical engineer, and this is his first foray into the restaurant business.

“This is a new chapter in my life,” Kilberg said.

Previous cafe owner Terry Kasper had run the restaurant since 2006.

Kilberg is well acquainted with the coffee house because his two daughters have worked there in the past, as well as his former wife.

Those who stop by the new Chapters Coffeehouse and Cafe will notice other changes besides the name.

“We’re trying to go more healthy with everything,” Kilberg said.

That includes serving smoothie drinks with less sugar, he said. In addition,

Kilberg said he will sell gluten-free options.

Batavia Library Director George Scheetz welcomed the changes.

“He’s updated the furniture in there and the equipment,” Scheetz said. “It’s looking really nice in there.

I think he has some really fresh ideas. We’re excited for the continuity. It is so well used by patrons and staff.”

Kasper’s lease with the library has not yet expired.

The Batavia Library Board recently assigned the rest of Kasper’s lease to Kilberg until the end of the year.

Business owners celebrate traffic easing on Route 64

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jeanine Fitzmaurice, owner of Curves along East Main Street in St. Charles, stood in the parking lot of Foxboro Plaza on Thursday afternoon feeling “very optimistic.”

She – along with many others, including St. Charles City Council members and city staff – gathered at the shopping center to celebrate the end of construction on Route 64 between Seventh Avenue and Kirk Road.

Route 64 is known as Main Street in St. Charles.

The Illinois Department of Transportation began a reconstruction and widening project on Route 64 between Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 in West Chicago in April 2012.

During construction, traffic on East Main Street was bumper-to-bumper – conges-

tion Curves members actively avoided, Fitzmaurice said.

“It affected us by the sense that women weren’t coming to work out,” said Fitzmaurice, noting the fitness center’s business was down by about 30 percent.

All lanes on Route 64 between Seventh Avenue and Kirk Road opened to traffic late last month – a milestone businesses and community leaders are trying to promote.

St. Charles Toyota owner Michael Alf said he hoped the ribbon-cutting ceremony would help spread the message.

“That’s why we’re here as business owners,” he said.

The construction on East Main Street briefly closed his car dealership’s preowned facility, which opened during construction, he said.

But sales weren’t the only aspect affected by the work.

“It affected [business] dra-

matically, especially on the service side,” said Alf, noting that for some customers a 20-minute trip turned into an hour.

Now, Alf said, the challenge is getting the word out that Route 64 is easier to travel on than ever.

St. Charles City Administrator Mark Koenen made similar statements before cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

“Our businesses are ready and open,” he said.

As a way to encourage women to return to Curves, Fitzmaurice said those who join now will receive their first month free.

Four people have joined in the past three days, she said.

“I’m feeling very optimistic,” she said.

Construction on Route 64 between 38th Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 is expected to be finished by Oct. 1.

Girl’s early Christmas present is fundraiser for Mutual Ground

With the help of her mom, Liz Rivera, Angelina plans to host a car wash Saturday in front of TitleMax at 2015 W. Main St., St. Charles, to raise money to buy Christmas presents for families served

by Mutual Ground, an Aurora-based organization that provides services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Rivera said several people from Angelina’s hapkido class volunteer with Mutual Ground, so they decided to reach out to them for the fundraiser. She said she hopes the car wash is the first of several fundraisers for Mutual Ground families. Other fundraisers might include candy sales, Rivera said.

Angelina said she hopes to raise “a whole lot” of money Saturday to buy presents for as many children as possible.

Rivera said they’re asking for a $5 donation for car washes, or whatever people are able to give.

“I wanted [the fundraiser] to help other kids,” Angelina said.

ST. CHARLES – Frank Lagowski, 77, formerly of St. Charles and Batavia, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Geneva. He was born Oct. 20, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Lillian Lagowski.

Frank spent the first part of his childhood in foster care before moving to Lincoln State School in Lincoln. In 1969, he was transferred to live at the North Aurora Center, where he lived until he moved to St. Charles as a live-in employee at the Hotel Baker. Frank always could be found in downtown St. Charles, whether he was polishing the brass outside of Hotel Baker or shopping downtown.

He loved the staff of the hotel and counted them as his family.

Frank moved to Riverain Point Apartments in Batavia and lived there for many years. Frank loved going to all the festivals that were held in St. Charles, Geneva or Batavia, movies at the “Lonely Mall,” Cougar games and park district trips. He made friends easily and usually was adopted by them as part of their family.

Frank’s favorite holiday was Christmas, which he would celebrate year-round by never taking down his Christmas tree.

The Congregational Church family was more than happy to help and provide for him; it was a mutual admiration society.

Frank was very special to everyone in the congregation, always making sure Frank was able to do the things he loved.

Frank will be dearly missed by all of his many friends. He was an inspiration to all that knew him.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept.

14, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., St. Charles. Interment will be private.

‘He was very inspirational’ Disabilities didn’t keep Frank from getting around town

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Frank Lagowski had to use a motorized wheelchair to get around, but that never slowed him down.

“I never once saw Frank feel sorry for himself,” said Rebecca Fritz, director of nursing at the Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Geneva. “He had a very positive attitude.”

Lagowski died Saturday at the Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 77 years old.

Despite his disabilities, Lagowski always was on the move, Fritz said, whether that

was taking in a Kane County Cougars game or going to downtown Geneva.

He was beloved among the staff at the center, Fritz said.

“He was very outgoing and he was very outspoken,” Fritz said. “He was a very loved member of our community.”

At one time, Lagowski was a live-in employee at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles, which is where St. Charles resident Sandy Anderson met him

when she worked there cleaning rooms.

“He was always so upbeat,” Anderson said. “And he never let his disabilities stop him from doing things. He was very inspirational.”

And he was a very giving person, she said.

“He would go to the Fox Valley Mall in Aurora when Marshall Field’s was still there to get me chocolate-covered cherries for my

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com The U.S. House Ethics Committee has said it will take more time to look into whether one of the men who represents the Tri-Cities in Congress may have improperly accepted a trip to Taiwan.

The committee announced Wednesday it would take an additional 45 days to review the trip taken in October 2011

by U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, and his wife.

Roskam represents Illinois’ 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. That dis-

trict includes portions of St. Charles, Campton Hills and South Elgin.

Roskam currently serves as the chief deputy whip, making him the fourth-highest-ranking member of the House’s Republican majority. Peter In July, the Roskam Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent nonpartisan group that investigates allegations of unethical behavior by members of Congress, asked the House Ethics Committee to review Roskam’s trip.

The OCE report first was released by Roskam’s office.

Within the report, the OCE indicated it believes “there is substantial reason to believe that Representative Roskam accepted payment of travel expenses for an officially connected trip to Taiwan from an impermissible source, resulting in an impermissible gift.”

Legal authority in the matter rests with the House Ethics Committee.

The OCE report indicates that, while documents filed

by Roskam indicated that the trip was sponsored by the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan, the OCE believes

the trip may have been organized by the government of Taiwan, “with little to no involvement by the university.”

The report indicates that the Taiwanese government attempted to first organize the trip under a federal law that permits a “cultural exchange.”

However, the law does not allow the foreign government to pay for lawmakers’ family members.

Since Roskam wished to take his wife, the $25,000 trip was organized under different auspices.

Roskam has maintained that he “fully complied with

all laws, rules and procedures related to privately sponsored travel.”

Roskam spokeswoman Stephanie Kittredge reiterated Thursday that the Taiwan trip was approved by the House Ethics Committee, and that the law does not bar interaction between foreign governments and lawmakers when traveling.

“There is no information in that [OCE] report that the House Ethics Committee did not know when it approved the trip,” Kittredge said.

Kittredge said Roskam hopes to resolve the matter with the Ethics Committee within the next 45 days.

Golf outing set to help injured Geneva grad

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Friends of James Burge, a 1988 Geneva High School graduate who was beaten last month near Rockford, have organized a fundraising golf outing to help his family with expenses.

Burge, 44, suffered brain damage after a beating Aug. 10 outside of his house, said his sister, April Dodd, of Texas.

Burge is home, recovering slowly with the assistance of his wife, Julie Burge, who previously worked as a nurse, Dodd said in an email. His wife is running the front lines

of his care, with occupational, speech and physical therapists.

“He is walking slowly, and with help, speaking in slurred and mumbled words and is able to feed himself with little help now,” Dodd said. “He can walk mostly by himself. Julie walks close by behind him, James Burge but he wants to do this by himself.”

The benefit is called Tee ‘em Up for Slim – Burge’s nickname in high school – at 10 a.m. Sept. 28 at Silver Ridge

“I felt I had to donate,” Sines said. “I hope they find who did this.”

Winnebago County Chief Deputy Dominic Iasparro said the beating that left Burge in a coma still is an open investigation.

“We are following up on a lot of leads, but nothing that has led to an arrest,” Iasparro said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – Before Mark Wissing left office as the Geneva Township Road Commissioner on May 19, he signed a contract to have a half-mile of Old Kirk Road resurfaced and a half-dozen driveway aprons repaved with asphalt.

The new road commissioner, Michael Abts, took office May 20. By the end of May, he had canceled the contract, leaving residents of the area – such as Brian Maher who lives on East Lane just off Old

Kirk Road – wondering why.

Earlier in the year, the area’s 40-year-old culverts were replaced. The work involved taking out the residents’ driveway aprons and replacing them with crushed stone.

Maher said he understood the stone had to settle before the asphalt could be put down in a two-part project.

Abts said he canceled the contract, which was for $81,040, because it was onethird of his budget for the whole year.

“Due to my budget concerns, I went out and inspected Old Kirk road myself,” Abts

that it could go a few more years before it needs resurfacing.

Abts said he saw a few areas in which the edges of the road are going, so he decided to address those and the driveway aprons next spring.

“If I were to go out to bid now, it would be expensive because everybody has all their planning and work for summer,” Abts said. “The crushed stone should be fine until next spring or early summer.”

Maher said he is satisfied with Abts’ explanation and is willing to wait for the work to be done next year.

“Due to my budget concerns, I went out and inspected Old Kirk road myself. And in my mind, it did not look that bad.”

To check himself, Abts had Kane County Department of Transportation construction chief Dave Boesch come out and look at the road as well.

“I wanted his opinion,” Abts said. “He said it did not

need to be resurfaced, not for the amount of traffic on it. I did not want to spend $81,000 of taxpayers’ money when I have an engineer who says it can wait. I made the decision.

I will take credit for the good or bad of it.”

Boesch confirmed that he checked Old Kirk Road and

Garman named chief justice of Illinois Supreme Court KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com CHICAGO – Rita B. Garman will be the next chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. She was chosen unanimously to succeed Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride, whose term expires Oct. 25.

Garman will become the second woman to be Illinois’ chief justice, according to a news release sent from the Supreme Court of Illinois.

She first became a judge in 1974, when she became an associate judge in Danville. She will mark her 40th anniversary as a judge Jan. 7.

“I am honored and hum-

bled to have been chosen by my colleagues to serve as chief justice,” Garman said, according to the release.

“This office has been held by many great jurists, several of whom I have served with and count among my friends. I welcome the chalRita B. lenges and the Garman responsibility that go with the role of chief justice because I know that I can count on the support of my colleagues at all levels of the judiciary and the members of the Illinois bar.”

Garman was raised in Oswego, and was class valedictorian at Oswego High School.

She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Illinois, and her juris doctor degree with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law. She was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court on Feb. 1, 2001, joining Mary Ann McMorrow, who was the first woman to serve on the state’s Supreme Court and the first woman to be its chief justice.

She was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2007 from the Illinois Judges Association.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A wonderful community To the Editor: As I leave the position of city administrator, I express my gratitude to the members of the St. Charles community for the opportunity to work with, and for, them. I have been fortunate to meet many great people during my time here – residents, businesspeople, community volunteers, elected officials, city employees and employees of intergovernmental partners.

Since 2005, a great deal has been accomplished to enhance the reputation of St. Charles as a community that is admired and an organization that is respected. I am proud that together we could enhance core services, advance the city’s economic standing, modernize infrastructure, enrich relationships and improve resident satisfaction.

The number of respondents to a community survey who rate St. Charles as “excellent” increased to 57 percent, the highest percentage ever achieved.

The city weathered the Great Recession without significant impact on quality of service delivery and with no employee layoffs.

City infrastructure was improved, including a new parking structure, new fire station, remodeled public works facility, new water treatment facility, new wastewater treatment facility, electric system upgrades that enhanced reliability and the new Red Gate Bridge over the Fox River.

And, St. Charles was named the No. 1 City for Families by Family Circle magazine.

St. Charles is a wonderful community, and I leave with many fond memories. St. Charles is also a community with significant untapped potential. I hope that current and future city leaders will work tirelessly to capitalize on the community’s strengths – a beautiful Fox River location; an attractive downtown; diverse housing choices; spectacular local government services provided by the city, school district, park district and library; and dedicated volunteers.

I also hope that all community members will do whatever they can to ensure St. Charles remains forever the Pride of the Fox. Brian A. Townsend

Academic angling proves best of sports to coach For 34 years, I’ve been a coach-less high school teacher.

No sweat-stained armless sweatshirts to soak in Lestoil, no laryngitis the first week of practice.

Until now – meaning I can join the coaches’ table.

“How’d practice go, Rick?”

“Tough,” I grimace. “Got to the lake at 6:15, sun just comin’ up, cool enough for a windbreaker. By 6:30, kids had spinners, jigs and Rattle Traps ripplin’ the surface.

Told ’em to correct for the slight cross breeze. By 7, some anglers donned sunglasses. Rocky banks demanded sure footing. By 7:45, temps reached a sweltering 72 degrees.”

“Glad I coach football.”

“Mental game’s the hardest to tackle – no pun intended,” I chortle. “Get

a young’un casting for a 4-pound bass, landing instead a 7-inch sunny or 5-foot weed, I tell ’em, ‘You’ll improve.

Our fishing team’s senior captains, when freshmen, couldn’t hook the broad side of a lily pad. Now they’re landin’ IHSA weight-worthy largemouth bass.’ ” Actually, I come to coaching with little to offer besides my lifelong love of fishing.

Sure, I can tie a fisherman’s knot and know the difference between Rooster Tail and Mepps spinners. But when Joe Large, Marmion Academy’s head fishing coach, reels off (pun intended) factors studied before going out, I’m humbled.

“I always check the weather forecast, barometric pressure, moon phase, wind directions and seasonal patterns so I can decide on

No matter how skilled, no angler escapes literal and metaphorical tangled lines – but they make the best stories.

“During one tournament,” Joe reminisced, “I embedded the trailer hook of a spinner bait deep in the back of my head. After shaking off the feeling that someone hit me with a sledge hammer and taking a few Advil, I managed to finish the last six hours of the tournament before heading to the emergency room.

Needless to say, I don’t use trailer hooks anymore.”

Co-captain David McCauley remembered a tournament when fishing “against a good team, but we bonded with them, talked about what they liked to use or do when fishing. We all learned some and caught some.”

Team members’ fathers and friends also help coach.

When Dave Dvorak speaks about fishing, you might think the sport as much spiritual as piscatorial.

“My uncle Steve died not long after graduating high school. Wish we had more time on the water. When Steve died, part of my father died also. He never fished again. It wouldn’t have been the same without his best friend fishing alongside him.”

No true angler goes out just to snag fish. They go for

something that surely differs for each person, but proves equally rewarding for all.

As co-captain Matt Zadorozny put it: “I go on the water plenty of times and don’t catch anything. But fishing with friends and the team, you get away from daily stresses and just enjoy life.”

So, even when you lose, you win. Sounds like a good way to catch life.

Playoff path narrow in Tri-Cities Tri-Cities playoff bids in past 10 years

S

ince the Upstate Eight Conference River came to be in 2010, there has yet to be a football season in which Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North qualified for the playoffs in the same year.

All four programs made the playoffs in four of the five seasons before that, begging the question – how realistic is it for shared, Tri-Cities prosperity in the UEC River era?

As the conference season opens tonight with the Batavia-Geneva and St. Charles East-St. Charles North rivalry showdowns, this season could serve as a revealing test case considering all four teams have showed signs of being playoff-caliber during the nonconference slate.

“I love that about the Tri-Cities,” St. Charles East coach Mike Fields said about the strength of local programs. “It’s been like that, with the success we had at Geneva when [Fields was an assistant there], with Batavia going down to the state championship game [under Mike Gaspari].

St. Charles since the split, my first year, [former coach Mark Gould] took North down to the [state quarterfinals]. So there’s some good football around here, and it shows.

“It’s nice to see that, and I hope that really works itself out where we can all get into the playoffs this year.”

That’s proven a tricky task lately, as only two of the four schools have made the playoffs each of the UEC River’s first three seasons.

How much of that has to do with the Tri-Cities programs beating up on each other now that they share a conference, as opposed to cyclical downturns in talent that have hit the St. Charles schools and Geneva at certain points in recent years is up for debate.

Geneva went 0-for-the-TriCities, losing to Batavia, East and North.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski acknowledged the pain of missing the playoffs was sharpened by local rivals dealing mortal blows to the Vikings’ season.

“It stings because you know these guys,” Wicinski said. “They grew up playing with them, so definitely it’s more personal connections, and you have families [involved], even brothers, cousins. We’re all made out of the same cloth in the [Fox Valley]. We’re all the same people.

“It cracks me up when people say ‘Oh, those Batavia people,’ or ‘Oh, those St. Charles people.’ … It’s all

the same people. So yeah, it stung. It stings more than getting beat by a Lake Zurich or an East St. Louis.”

While East is the only 2-0 team of the four entering Week 3, each of the others is 1-1, and the losses absorbed

by Batavia, Geneva and North (in overtime to Elk Grove) all came to highly respected foes.

If results play out just right, it seems reasonable that this could be the first season since 2008 for the Tri-Cities to go 4 for 4 on the playoff bid front. Wicinski doesn’t discount the possibility.

“I think I’ve got a good feel for what East has,” Wicinski said. “Batavia, I’m going to find out [tonight].

North, I have no idea but they just beat the bejesus out of [Plainfield Central],

and they’re touting that tailback as being the next coming, so if he’s that good, we’ll definitely have our hands full with all their D-I players.”

Batavia coach Dennis Piron’s Bulldogs are the two-time defending UEC River champions, running the table both times.

Piron said the way local teams challenge themselves against excellent nonconference opposition makes for minimal margin for error by the time conference play arrives.

“If you’re going to want to make the playoffs, you’re going to have to beat a couple of those [Tri-Cities] teams, and right now it looks like everyone in on the upswing, so it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun competition,” Piron said.

Fun competition, for sure, as tonight’s crowds should attest.

But if the first three years of the UEC River are an accurate indicator, it’ll come at a cost to somebody.

“I think there’s an odd-man out rule because everyone’s got to play each other,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “You drop one game that you shouldn’t, and now you’re on the outside looking in.”

ROAD TRIPPING The drive to the east side shouldn’t be too taxing for St. Charles North fans, but parking could be.

East is offering overflow parking in the Sears area of Charlestowne Mall for tonight’s crosstown showdown, plus a shuttle to the high school that will run from about 6 to 10 p.m.

REMEMBER WHEN …

Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina’s sophomore season ended prematurely with last year’s Week 3 hit by graduated Batavia defensive lineman Marquise Jenkins. Santacaterina suffered a broken clavicle.

“I’m not thinking about it too much, and I think that’s a good thing,” said Santacaterina, who had a titanium plate and 10 screws inserted to permanently protect his collarbone. “It’s not even in my head at all. I’m not worried about it. I’ve taken a good amount of hits the first two weeks, so everything’s gone smoothly.”

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK Kaneland at Sterling. The Knights head west for a matchup of 2-0 teams and their lone away game in the first five weeks of the season.

The Golden Warriors, a 5A playoff participant last season, have defeated Metamora and Johnsburg by an average of 16½ points in their first two outings this season.

“I think it should be a great atmosphere,” Pomazak said.

“Obviously, when two teams share the same name with the exception of what direction, I think it means a little bit more.”

PLAYOFF WATCH Burlington Central, the area’s lone 0-2 team, realistically faces a must-win in tonight’s game against visiting Rockford Christian, which also is 0-2.

“High school football, so much of it is what your kids believe, and obviously those kids believe at Geneva,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said.

But the two-time defending UEC River champion Bulldogs have the personnel to strip a team’s confidence in a hurry,

and Batavia players would love the chance to remind the Vikings early and often about their recent success in the rivalry.

Best-case scenario for the Vikings Quarterback Daniel Santacaterina builds upon what has been an impressive connection with receivers Pace Temple (258 receiving yards, three TDs) and Kyle Brown (200 receiving yards) against a Batavia defense that has been burned by big plays early this season.

“I’ve been really pleased with him,” Wicinski said of Santacaterina. “He’s reading the field real well and he’s not holding onto the ball, because Lord knows he doesn’t have much time. He’s manipulating the pocket real well.”

Piron is leery of Geneva’s downfield passing attack that so far has overshadowed the Vi-

kings’ traditional, power running game.

“I think this year they seem to have some other things that they can do and in some ways it makes them a little bit more dangerous,” Piron said. “They seem like they can score right now on any play. You make a mistake right now, and it seems like it’s going to be a touchdown.”

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Batavia 32, Geneva 27 There are dynamic skill-position players on both sides, starting at the quarterback position, so this shapes up as a crowd-pleasing installment of the rivalry. But at some point, a defensive stand or two will loom large, and you’d have to think Batavia’s significant experience edge on that side of the ball will allow the Bulldogs to bounce back from last week’s rare loss.

“Whether they scored 41 or they scored 1, we’re going to prepare the same way,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “Each week is independent of the next.”

Having digested film from North’s overtime loss to Elk Grove and blowout win against Plainfield Central last week, East coach Mike Fields said the North Stars’ line-play is as advertised this season, meaning it’s awfully good.

North had to retool its plans at the center position, but with Stephen Bancroft now settled in there, a brawny unit led by Michigan State-bound tackle Chase Gianacakos will look to build on a robust Week 2 performance.

Athletic Saints D-ends Luke Spicer and David Mason will attempt to keep North’s line from making North running back Evan Kurtz’s job easy.

“We think [the line of scrimmage] is going to be where the first battle is going to be and where the last battle is going to be this Friday,” East coach Mike Fields said.

The X-factors Speaking of line-play, the Saints’ offensive line will be challenged with starting offensive guard Jake Schultz out indefinitely with a

knee injury, an injury that Fields said could sting.

East’s depth at cornerback also took a hit in Wednesday’s practice when Matt Dorsey – who rotates in at a relatively deep position for the Saints – went down with a knee injury.

“I still think his best [play] is ahead of Erik,” Pomazak said.

“I think he’s going to be one of the best quarterbacks in our conference when it’s all said and done. He’s extremely physically talented, and every day he’s getting better.”

Best-case scenario for the North Stars

Best-case scenario for the Saints

North steamrolled Plainfield Central with 300-plus rushing yards, and the North Stars won’t hesitate to play a power game against the Saints or anyone else.

Still, Pomazak and Co. would like to see the passing game make strides to have the capability to punish teams for stacking the box. Senior quarterback Erik Miller made better decisions last week than in a mistake-prone opener but still has room to grow.

Make North chase a deficit.

If East carries a lead into the fourth quarter, the North Stars likely would feel compelled to deviate from their strength offensively, and ball-hawking Saints defensive backs led by two-way stalwart Brannon Barry could help the Saints win the turnover battle.

East quarterback Jimmy Mitchell’s confidence has to be at an all-time high after the Jacobs game, though a North defense

led by do-it-all linebacker Reece Conroyd and surprise performers Mitchell Riggs (two interceptions) and defensive tackle James Glavin will ensure the Saints earn what they get.

“We’ve got our hands full,” Fields said. “They’ll be the best of the three teams that we’ve faced.

We’ve got to play our best game to get that ‘W.’ “

Jay Schwab’s prediction: St. Charles East 21, St. Charles North 19 This has the potential to be a sensational game, with two teams that likely are both playoff-caliber coming off uplifting Week 2 wins.

It could certainly go either way, but the Saints’ knack for big special teams returns and Mitchell’s emergence makes East awfully tough to pick against at home.

Geneva’s defense – with just one returning starter – was a mystery entering the season, but Vikings coach Rob Wicinski said the unit has impressed him.

True, the Vikings have allowed 67 points through two weeks, but Geneva has played strong competition, and the Vikings’ offense and special teams have backed the defense into some

precarious spots.

Geneva’s linebacker play – with senior Joe Boenzi and junior Wyatt Shodeen leading the way – has been formidable, but it won’t be easy keeping tabs on slippery Batavia running back Anthony Scaccia. Scaccia hurt the Vikings in last year’s 35-21 Batavia win, rushing for 112 yards and two TDs. Of course, wrapping up Scaccia at the line of scrimmage would be even better if the Vikings can muscle up.

Wicinski said ends Billy Douds and Matt Loberg and tackle Stephen Kemp – formerly a linebacker himself – have been among the defense’s other top performers.

Still, coach Tom Fedderly would like to see quarterback Drew David and the passing game lead directly to some points. “We had some that we should have [the past couple weeks] but I think we probably overthrew it or ran the wrong route,” Fedderly said. “We had a couple we should have had for sure but just didn’t execute on it. But having rushing touchdowns, that’s fine with me.” The Knights have eight of those, five coming from Jesse Balluff (34 carries for 269 yards). In NI Big 12 crossover foe Sterling, the Knights will deal with another multifaceted, spread offense; the Golden Warriors’ Draque Penaflor-Heier has rushed for 253 yards and four TDs while QB Bryant Lilly is 23 for 41 for 420 passing yards and five TDs. The skinny: Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe always talks respectfully about Walther Lutheran’s program, mindful of the Eagles’ former struggles against Walther Lutheran when the schools were Private School League rivals. But the Eagles have ascended to lofty heights in recent years, and Walther has gone the opposite direction. This shapes up as the third straight week without a serious test for the Eagles.

Extra point: Noah Hagerty leads a balanced Aurora Christian receiving corps so far with six catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Aurora Central Catholic (2-0, 0-0 SCC Gold) at IC Catholic (1-1, 0-0 SCC Gold), 1 p.m. Saturday Last week’s results: ACC beat Chicago Bogan, 42-7; IC Catholic Prep lost to Kaneland, 45-14.

The skinny: ACC coach Brian Casey thought the Chargers would need the best week of practice the program has had to conquer an IC Catholic Prep program that has dealt the Chargers harsh, Week 3 comeuppances the past couple seasons after ACC also started those years 2-0. Casey is putting emphasis on a better showing against the Knights this time.

Extra point: The Chargers’ defense showed signs it can be opportunistic, gathering turnovers in their only game action last week (ACC won by forfeit Week 1), a trend ACC would love to continue against an IC Catholic Prep offense that made its share of mistakes last week at Kaneland.

Batavia girls volleyball players kept their eyes on Maddie Jaudon during Tuesday’s home match against St. Charles North, but the Bulldogs also are cognizant of what graduates are up to in college.

NOTEWORTHY “Pack the Place” partnership Batavia touted Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division opener as its “Pack the Place” night.

Visiting St. Charles North got the memo, too, as well as some promotional T-shirts.

It was all part of Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne’s plan.

“I think that speaks a lot about their program and just the person that she is,” said North coach Lindsey Hawkins, who sported a “Pack the Place” T-shirt during the match. “She really wants to build an Upstate Eight tradition of spirit, and we love that because we’re all about that at North. We were happy to join in and get as many fans out here as possible.”

Ultimately, the royal blue and black-clad partisans in the overflow crowd found more to cheer about during North’s 25-23, 25-21 victory – the North Stars’ 10th in as many matches to open the season.

“We knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. It was going to be a battle, but we all had to play for each other and we couldn’t give up,” North middle blocker Emily Carroll said.

“We just had to keep fighting.

Go all out for every play and never take a play off.”

That junior defensive specialist Allie DeTamble (nine kills) wasn’t far behind them was especially encouraging to Rockets coach Marv Leavitt, who is looking for extra offense as the team awaits Lauren Wiltsie’s recovery from a knee injury.

“That was strong. Allie played tough,” Leavitt said.

“She’s one of our starting DSes, so the passing has been there, but getting that hitting contribution really helps us out.”

Old ’Dogs, new fans Allie aboard Burlington Central’s threegame win against Rock Falls last week included double-digit kills from hitters Jenna Schudel and Makenna Jensen.

Trippi-Payne keeps a firm pulse on the status of former players in college. In October, she and her current batch plan to see two of them face off in Chicago.

Depending on Batavia’s earlier itinerary – the team is idle from competition on the weekend before regionals – the day could start in Arlington Heights, site of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Batavia grad Briahna Havis, a defensive specialist for NAIA Roosevelt, is now a CCAC athlete.

Lanasa, Wicinski and Caruso – a junior, junior and senior, respectively – led the team in the same statistical categories during Tuesday’s sweep at Elgin.

District 303 has held all-district book drives to benefit the bank, as well, collecting more than 23,000 books in 2011-12 and more than 33,000 books in 2012-13.

The bank serves more than 75,000 children from birth to sixth grade and is on track to reach its goal of distributing more than 1 million high-quality books this year.

Kappele has yet to finalize her half-marathon destinations for October, November and December, but has plans in place, especially for her 2013 swan song.

Carly is a two-year Varsity Volleyball player and the captain of this year’s squad. She is the team’s setter and has led the team in assists in each of the team’s matches this year. She will be attending High Point University in North Carolina next year on a volleyball scholarship.

In four conference matches, Elise has been the medalist for the team multiple times.

She has earned eight points as an individual towards All-Conference.

She is a team player and a valuable team member who is very consistent, and she is a great student who enjoys all curricular areas.

O’Connor was a Big Northern East All-Conference player during his Sophomore and Junior seasons, and his junior year he led the team in assists. After playing in the only loss of the season so far, the coach from the opposing team gave O’Connor great compliments on how hard he worked.

Moffatt plays wide receiver and center for Batavia Football. He also holds, returns kicks, and punts. Overall, he is a do-it-all player!

In June, Nathaniel was invited to the Midwest Distance Gala, where he won the 800m run, breaking a school record set in 1975. His time is the fastest in the state and ranks in the top 10 in the country. He was a member of the state 2A champion 4x800 relay team in the Spring.

A Northern Illinois recruit, Krage has shined as an outside hitter for the North Stars, who won the Plainfield North tournament over Labor Day weekend.

She’s a reading specialist at Davis Primary School in St. Charles by day, and an avid runner by early morning and/or night.

At the fourth annual Advocate Dreyer Fox Valley Marathon on Sept. 22, Kappele will consider herself the best of both worlds. She’s competing in the half-marathon to benefit Bernie’s Book Bank, which collects and redistributes books to atrisk children in the Chicago region.

“I’m trying to put the two together to support kids right in our backyard and Chicagoland because we have kids that need it,” Kappele said. “They need these books.”

A prime example of that came on the ninth hole when Lillibridge sank a 20-footer for birdie.

“I knew it was up the hill and was going to break a little right,” he said. “So I tried just to hit it hard enough to get up there. It got in on the edge and I was fortunate for it to go in because that pin placement is brutal. If I missed it, it was probably all the way down the hill and was going to be a tough putt coming back.”

Lillibridge’s round was four strokes better than the next best score of the day,

turned in by North’s Matt Samuelson.

“I played well,” Samuelson said. “I feel like I could have went lower, but you can say that after every single round.

It was windy and, overall, I’d say 40 on a day like today is OK.” Samuelson said the Bowes Creek course is one of the tougher ones he sees in high school play, especially in windy conditions.

“There are no trees out here and there are a lot of hazards on the course,” he said. “When it gets windy, that brings them into play even more. You really have to keep it straight and make putts, but if you play well, you can go low.”

J.T. Grill shot a 41 and Raghav Cherala and Tharyn Duncan each finished with a 42 for the North Stars (6-1, 2-1).

“This was probably the biggest match of the year so far,” North coach Rob Prentiss said. “We’re disappointed tonight we didn’t defend our home course a little better.

We’re looking to learn from what happened out there to-

day. I have a lot of seniors on the team, but I wouldn’t say they have a lot of experience in big matches. It was a big match tonight and for some reason, as a group, we didn’t answer the challenge.”

Geneva had three players finish at 41 – Brett Hassells, Alex Schreiber, and Mac Feehan.

“I always look at the North team as one of the top teams in the conference,” Geneva coach Bill Koehn said. “You have to beat them. To come here and win on their course is quite an accomplishment.”

The Vikings hope to continue their strong play when they host Batavia in another key conference dual meet Tuesday at Mill Creek.

“It’s different guys every night that are stepping up,” Koehn said. “Grant Lillibridge is playing extremely well as a freshman. He’s been our leader the whole season. … We had a sophomore step up and play really big for us tonight, Mac Feehan. That might be his best round so far in the conference.”

Rosary girls tennis scores conference victory KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – Learning experiences and winning experiences have been one and the same for the Rosary girls tennis team lately.

Thursday’s 4-1 win against visiting Suburban Christian Conference foe Chicago Christian provided the latest example.

“We’re still trying to find our form, and every time we’re out there we’re trying to learn more,” Royals coach John Tsang said. “Today was one of those days that allowed us to get better.”

Rosary (6-3, 3-0 SCC) sealed the dual behind a doubles sweep. Outside of Andrea Goyao and Megan Conlin’s 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 1 slot, each match was competitive.

At No. 2 doubles, Alexis Thomas and Nelson Jenig overcame early hiccups to

score a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

“They finally found their game,” Tsang said, “and you could tell from the score they kind of rolled the rest of the way.”

Kaneland 3, Sycamore 2: At Maple Park, Kaneland swept doubles play to secure the NI Big 12 East victory. The No. 3 tandem of Kaylee Shoaff and Mallory Dugan won, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

St. Francis 5, Aurora Central Catholic 0: At Wheaton, St. Francis swept the SCC dual behind a dominant doubles effort, which included a 6-2, 6-0 win from Madeline McEnery and Genna Gruendeman in the No. 2 slot.

ELGIN – There were plenty of seniors playing the front nine in a big Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual meet at Bowes Creek Country Club on Thursday, but it was a diminutive freshman who came up with the biggest round of the day.

Geneva’s Grant Lillibridge fired an even-par 36 to lead the Vikings (7-0 overall, 4-0 league) to a 159-165 victory over previously unbeaten St. Charles North.

“I didn’t hit the ball great, but I chipped and putted extremely well,” Lillibridge said.

“I got up and down a bunch.

Coming out of the rough – I only hit two fairways – I was very good. I hit a lot of greens.”

The greens were where Lillibridge separated himself from the competition.

“I tried to keep my head down in putting because I hit a lot of lag putts,” Lillibridge said. “Any clutch putts I had, I made, which was huge to keep the round going.”

“It’s different guys every night that are stepping up. Grant Lillibridge is playing extremely well as a freshman.

He’s been our leader the whole season.”

Bears face similar scheme against Vikings’ young secondary

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com LAKE FOREST – If the Bears’ offensive line can hold its own against Jared Allen, Brian Robison and the Vikings’ front, it will give Jay Cutler an opportunity to throw against a young Minnesota secondary.

In a few years, the Vikings’ back end could look like the Bears’ group, but for now, it’s still a unit that allowed 357 passing yards last week and finished 24th against the pass last season.

Starters Josh Robinson and Harrison Smith are in their second season and Xavi-

er Rhodes, who comes on the field in the nickel, is a rookie, but the Bears aren’t looking past this unit.

“They have skill in the back end. They have speed and they’ve made plays in the past,” said offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer, who also singled out cornerback Chris Cook’s physicality.

Coach Marc Trestman compared the Vikings’ Cover 2 defense to a look from the early 2000s, citing how physical the defensive backs are and their ability to defend the run.

“From the sideline or from the casual observer, it almost looks like they’re playing

man-to-man coverage in their Cover 2 as you come off the line of scrimmage,” he said.

“They play their positions very well. They’re disciplined back there. We’ve got a lot of challenges.

“They’re a good group and they’re going to just get better.”

A Cover-2 scheme that relies on very physical corners – sound familiar?

“It’s a very similar structure,” Trestman said about the Vikings’ scheme compared to what the Bears’ offense sees in practice against its own defense. “[There are] subtle differences in how they play certain techniques,

but very similar structure.”

Protecting Jay, Week 2: New Bears left tackle Jermon Bushrod gets the task this week of blocking Allen, one of the game’s best pass rushers the past few seasons.

“He’s a tough competitor.

I’ve played him a few times and it’s no letdown every play,” Bushrod said. “He’s going to the ball hard every single play so I’ve got to be striking on all cylinders to get it done this week.”

Cutler knows Allen can make a difference, but believes Bushrod can keep his blind side clean.

“I’ve got all the confidence in Bush to block him one-on-

one,” he said.

On the other side, rookie Jordan Mills will face Brian Robison, whom Trestman said may even be more athletic than Allen.

No Peppers, Tillman: Julius Peppers was sent home from practice with a fever. Trestman said Peppers will see the doctor but that it’s “nothing serious there.”

After being limited in practice with a knee injury Wednesday, Charles Tillman was absent Thursday.

Trestman said it was not injury-related, but for a family matter, and Tillman will be back today.

A lifelong pursuit begins another phase Ron Koeppl. Mention that name anywhere from Main Street to the Great White Way, The Metropolitan Opera or Las Vegas, and the response will be a smile and a thank you.

That’s because his long career as a drama teacher and producer has provided a stepping off place for many talented students. Students, players and audiences have a lingering joy in their hearts after encountering the enchantment of the theater arts in the company of Ron and his much beloved late wife, Gretchen.

Retirement? Not exactly. He had already retired from the faculty at St. Charles East.

“The Wiz” was announced as his last musical production and soon “Noises Off,” a farce that is the repeat of a presentation in the ’80s, will be what he has declared as his very last.

Look for “Noises Off” in October on the 10, 18, 19 and 20 at the Norris Cultural Arts Theater in St. Charles.

Now a resident of The Reserve in Geneva, he seems by no

Gretchen was a multi talented player, actress and singer and inspiration to all. Casting could be a challenge. And who could do justice to the role of Ron Koeppl?

As Ron gathered his memories in our recent chat, he remarked that the ’80s were kind of a Golden Age or as he called it, OMG times.

So many of those talented went on to fruitful careers. Most in the region. Follow the operatic career of Wray.

Koeppl cites Matt Jones, who appeared in “Phantom of

the Opera;” Lawson Skala who appeared in “Jesus Christ Super Star” and “Phantom,” too, and was lauded by Andrew Lloyd Weber.

He also cites Kim Saval who went on to appear in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

Stephen Full appeared on the Disney Channel; Koeppl connects with many other former students and folks from Playmakers, and other community theater and fine arts comrades on Facebook. All of us are deemed his “extended family.”

One might conclude with the over-used phrase – “All’s well that ends well.” ... But it isn’t over yet!

It’s up to Ron to cue when the fat lady sings ... .

Performance, comfort define Infiniti G37 coupe Four years ago, Infiniti replaced a 3.5- with a 3.7-liter engine, which changed the G35 model line into a G37 car. The G37, like the G35, can be ordered as a sedan, coupe or convertible.

The slightly tweaked engine was mated to a new seven-speed automatic transmission. The seven-speed replaced a fivespeed automatic, thus improving fuel economy by a mile or two per gallon of gasoline.

Through the years, the G37 remains relatively unchanged.

Quality materials dominate the interior and a classy sport profile expresses itself on the exterior. Damping mechanics in the strut suspension system keep this 69.8-inch-wide, 187.9-inch-long car on an even keel. Acoustics are topnotch due to multi-point engine mounts, laminated glass, and generous doses of foam insulation into cavities surrounding the cabin.

The interior is ultra-quiet.

The engine is, like an animal of prey, alert and quiet. It uses premium fuel. A 2013 all-wheeldrive (rear-wheel-drive standard) coupe was tested recently.

The 3,822-pound, four-passenger, two-door coupe averaged 20.7 miles per gallon. Driving habits were mild with few intemperate accelerations from stop signs.

Two adults were aboard on primarily interstate driving.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2013 G37 coupe at 18 miles per gallon city and 25 mpg highway. A 20-gallon tank is onboard. Mileage statistics are governed by driving habits, weather, road conditions and quality of gasoline.

Prices for the 2013 G37 start at $32,550 and can top out close to $50,000. The tested coupe cost $41,450 and came with a 330-horsepower, dual overhead cam, 24-valve engine mated to the shiftable automatic. There were solid magnesium paddle shifters behind the power leather-clad tilt and telescoping steering wheel.

Infiniti’s G37 coupes are powered by a 3.7-liter, 330-horsepower V6 engine mated to either a seven-speed shiftable automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper basic power amenities (seats, exterior mirrors, door locks, four express up-and-down windows, remote entry), such as cruise control, air conditioning, reading lights front and rear, lighted visor vanity mirrors, compass, trip meters, external temperature control, zoned climate control, rear view monitor, analog clock and XM satellite radio in the sound package, and safety features, such as traction and stability controls, antilock brakes and airbags in front and sides with curtains overhead.

But niceties are added as prices increase.

Options on the tested coupe included the $1,250 tech package and a $1,950 sport package.

This meant larger wheels and tires (19- instead of 18-inch) and

brakes (14-inch front with and 13.8-inch rear replacing 12-inch discs). The larger brakes had four-piston calipers in front and two-piston calipers in the rear.

This vehicle can brake from 60 miles per hour to 0 in a distance of 120 feet. This is good and better than 95 percent of all vehicles being driven on highways today.

The packages also included a power moonroof over the front seats, added a viscous limited slip differential, and included upgraded safety fare, such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, intelligent cruise control, pre-collision seat belt tightening and preview braking (automatic if collision imminent).

The six-speaker sound system includes AM-FM- XM satellite radio, compact disc player, USB connection port for iPod and other compatible devices, Bluetooth hands-free telephone, 7-inch color monitor and redundant controls on the tilt and telescop-

ing leather-clad steering wheel.

A $1,850 package adds a navigation system, XM navigation traffic and weather, DVD video playback, voice recognition and a 9.3 gigabyte music box to the Bose sound system, lane guidance and speed limit advisory monitor.

This package was not on the test vehicle. The tested G37 did come with gray Monaco leather for the seats. The tight stitching stands out in the charcoal interior. Metal trim includes aluminum brake and gas pedals.

Start and stop functions are done via a pushbutton on the dashboard.

With high intensity discharge headlights, front fog lamps, chrome trim, wraparound lights and dual polished exhaust tips in the rear, the low-profile G37 exemplifies what a spiffy coupe should look like.

The coupe has a front chin and rear decklid spoiler, black grille, rear sonar system (de-

tects close or too close vehicles and sounds a warning), and more emphatic front fascia and side sills.

The suspension system has double wishbones in front and multilinks in the rear to keep this midsize coupe steady while rounding sharp corners at fast but legal speeds.

For comfort on long trips, and a little bit of zip along the way, the coupe is ideal for two persons. The cabin is quiet, the sound system superb. Front seats are comfortable as far as leg room and body configurations are concerned. The rear seating area is confining as it is in coupes. The trunk has 13.5 cubic feet of storage space, which is commendable in a coupe.

Infiniti’s standard warranty of four years or 50,000 miles with 24-hour roadside assistance adds six-year or 70,000-mile coverage on the drivetrain.

By AL ALEXANDER More Content Now It’s gotten to the point that I’m more afraid of haunted-house movies than haunted houses themselves.

And an insipid new film is a prime reason why they have me shaking in my pukestained boots.

It’s not just bad; it’s that rare movie free of a single redeeming quality. Everything about it stinks, from the sophomoric writing to the sleep-inducing performances.

But even more frightening is the feeling that the torture being inflicted by the writing-directing team of Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon will never end. It just goes on and on sans any semblance of cleverness and spontaneity.

“Hell Baby” bills itself as a parody, but why pick on good movies like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist” when there are so many awful horror pictures ripe to be ripped to shreds? But attempting to read logic into this turkey is foolhardy at best. That’s because there is no logic, just a lot of poorly executed, scattershot scenes that are nowhere close to interesting or new.

Dare I say it makes the “Scary Movie” franchise look brilliant by comparison?

It’s certainly not up to the standards of a performer the caliber of Weymouth’s Rob Corddry, who must have owed someone a favor in order to undercut his esteem so grievously. And given the consistently anguished look on his face, I wouldn’t be shocked if he wasn’t forced into it at gunpoint.

If you’re familiar with their work in those arenas, you should have a good read on how much you’ll hate – or love – “Hell Baby.” It’s very much the same style of offbeat, in-your-face humor.

But it also reeks of the same air of self-satisfaction emitted by writers who think they’re funnier than they actually are.

And given Lennon and Garant’s extensive backgrounds in sketch comedy, it’s understandable why “Hell Baby” often feels like a 95-second skit s-t-r-e-t-c-he-d to 95 minutes. That also might explain why there’s no discernible plot or theme.

The philosophy is clearly throw everything you can think of at the screen and hope some of it sticks. But, regrettably, nothing does.

Buried somewhere deep amid all the screaming and gross-out gags is an attempt to make a statement on race,

class and the social-economic divide. But good luck finding it. All I could see was rampant stupidity. And what could be more idiotic than casting a comedian as gifted as Corddry as a straight man? He plays Jack, an allegedly savvy house-flipper, who, along with his beautiful and very pregnant wife, Vanessa (an overmatched Leslie Bibb), has just moved into a rundown mansion in one of blackest, roughest sections of New Orleans. They’re looking to one day make a killing on the house, but the house is looking to kill them first.

It’s haunted of course, and almost immediately Vanessa is possessed. How do we know this? Because she’s suddenly drinking copious amounts of wine and paint thinner in her third trimester. No wonder she’s about to pop a demonic baby, complete with little tiny horns.

The more obvious ones are the goat horns worn by the rest of the cast, including a beautiful, but very nude, Riki Lindhome, as Vanessa’s shaman-like sex-pot

sister, and Comedy Central’s Keegan Michael Key as the intrusive, uninvited boarder residing in Jack and Vanessa’s musty crawlspace.

But their rancidness can’t possibly compare to Lennon and Garant, who repeatedly attempt to steal their own movie by playing latter-day Father Guido Sarduccis sent

by The Vatican to rid Jack and Vanessa’s home of its disgruntled spirits.

Not only are Lennon and Garant not funny, they’re an embarrassing stereotype of macho Italians, bad accents and all.

The one thing you can say in “Hell Baby’s” favor is that there are no pee or poop jokes. But a 3- or 4-minute puke-athon quickly negates that.

We also get an eviscerated psychiatrist and a group of responsible adults shown acting crudely.

Granted, what they do involves the devil, but it’s still not what you’d call pleasant to watch. It’s certainly not funny. It’s merely revolting, just like the rest of the movie.

Unless you have been in our shoes, you can’t know how we feel when we watch the news because we have no true idea of what is going on. Our military family members can’t tell us, and often we have no (or limited) contact with them. I cry alone often.

Avoid the ‘top 10’ list of foods with salt Dear Doctor K: I’m trying to cut back on salt in my diet. Can you help me get started? Where does most of the salt in my diet come from?

Dear Reader: You may be surprised to hear that, for most Americans, just 10 types of food deliver almost half of our daily sodium. Here’s the list: • Breads and rolls • Cold cuts/cured meats • Pizza • Poultry • Soups • Hamburgers and other sandwiches • Cheese • Pasta mixed dishes • Meat mixed dishes • Chips, pretzels and other savory snacks (For children ages 2 to 5, hot dogs and sausages come in at No. 3.)

At first glance, it seems odd that breads and rolls top the list.

After all, they aren’t nearly as salty as chips or cheese. But since we eat breads and rolls more often, the modest amounts of sodium they contain add up.

The body needs some sodium to function, but too much sodium

High blood pressure is a leading cause of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease and more.

Americans take in an average of 3,266 milligrams of sodium a day, or about 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt. That’s well above the healthy target of 2,300 milligrams a day, or 1 teaspoon. And some authorities say that the target of 2,300 milligrams a day is too high. For people at risk for heart disease, kidney disease and stroke – such as people with high blood pressure or diabetes – a target of 1,500 milligrams a day is better.

As you cut down on salt in your diet, the first logical step is to limit or avoid the foods on the “top 10” list. Next, be mindful when you shop for groceries or eat in restaurants.

The most sodium-heavy foods we eat tend to be processed foods.

So, minimize canned or prepared foods, as well as foods that are salt-

ed, smoked or cured, such as cold cuts, bacon and cheese. You can always check the Nutrition Facts label on packaged food in supermarkets to see how much salt is in a prepared food.

Be careful that you determine what the Nutrition Facts label considers a “serving.” A can may say there are 500 milligrams of sodium in a “serving,” leading you to think that means 500 milligrams in the whole can. But most of the time, the can will contain several servings. This may seem like obvious advice, but I’m surprised by how many of my patients don’t look at the definition of “serving” that’s on the label.

Replace processed foods with foods made from scratch. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Replace salt with herbs, spices and flavorings.

When you eat out, if possible, ask that your food be made without salt. At chain restaurants, menus that list nutrition information can help you choose wisely.

athletes becomes a pro Dr. Wallace: My son is 18 and attending a university on a football scholarship. He was an all-state running back and had many scholarship offers, but chose the Big Ten because of its wonderful national media coverage. My son has dreamed of playing professional football ever since he met a professional football player at an athletic banquet 10 years ago.

The Big Ten university has a wonderful academic reputation, so if he got injured playing football or didn’t have the skills to play professional football, he would have a quality education. I am a realist.

I know a lot of boys dream about being a World Series hero or scoring the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, but many of these dreams are just that – dreams. What are the odds of a boy becoming a professional athlete?

Dear Abby: Now that California law prohibits drivers from using cellphones and texting while driving, an additional issue needs to be addressed and acted upon. Bicyclists are supposed to abide by the vehicle codes, too, but they rarely do – and that includes not wearing protective gear.

I’m now seeing people on bikes texting, talking while riding and routinely ignoring stop signs.

Disappointingly, I have never seen a single rider pulled over or ticketed for doing this. How many lives must be destroyed or lost before the police start enforcing penalties for the danger these people cause to others? – Caring Reader, Sacramento, Calif.

Now West shifts to a deceptive spade nine. How should declarer continue?

Note South’s balancing jump overcall. This is no longer weak, as it would have been in the second seat. It is intermediate, showing a respectable six- or seven-card suit and some 14-16 high-card points. The hand will typically contain seven playing tricks (winners).

South has lost three tricks, his book. He must play the trump suit without loss. In normal circumstances, he would finesse through East. But whenever an opponent opens the bidding and you buy the contract, always count up the high-card points.

Here, North and South have a combined 24 points. East has already produced four, the diamond ace. That leaves at most 12 for West, yet he opened the bidding. He must have the heart king. (Alternatively, if East had had that king, he would have had seven points and would not have passed over his partner’s opening bid.)

So, declarer should win trick four and play a heart to his ace.

When the king luckily drops, South can claim.
