Jeff Schielke Batavia mayor ment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives. Dempsey said the TIF funding is needed because of problems with the site. Because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons or piers, which could cost $275,000, Dempsey said. In addition, a large storm drain line that runs through the city-owned portion of the property. The line acts as an overflow route from the southern tip of Depot Pond to a point in the Fox River just north of the city of Batavia’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency garage. Dempsey said if the line has to be moved, it would cost about $250,000. He estimated the overall project cost at between $5.5 million and $6 million, including $3 million to build the store. “We are not asking for anything more than the project generates,” he said. The city’s TIF consultant still is determining the amount of revenues the project will generate, Dempsey said. Batavia Enterprises believes it is eligible for up to $2 million in TIF funds, he said.

BATAVIA – City and Batavia Enterprises officials believe that progress is being made in moving the Walgreens project forward following a meeting recently between city and company officials. “We were able to come to common ground,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. “I remain optimistic we can meet the Dec. 1 deadline.” Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey said the Batavia City Council would have to approve the project by December. He said construction of the new store must begin by March to deliver the building to Walgreens corporate leaders by the end of September 2014. Dempsey also was optimistic that the project, which has been in the planning stages since 2010, is moving forward. “All parties agreed this should not be delayed any more,” Dempsey said. “We are ready to move forward to the next level.” The plans are set to go before the Batavia Plan Commission on Wednesday, Sept. 18, for design review. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assess-

8LOCAL BRIEF Batavia Viking Lodge plans third chili cook-off OPPOSITES ATTRACT When selecting eyeglass frames, the shape of your face and your skin tone should help guide your decisions. To put it simply, the shape of the eyeglass frames should be “opposite” to that of your face. Thus, a round face will look best in geometric-shaped eyeglasses, and a pair of oval or rounded glasses will enhance a square face. Oblong faces look best in frames with strong horizontal bars and rounded bottoms. As far as skin tone is concerned, “warm” Mediterranean coloring (dark hair, eyes, and complexion) is most flattered by frames in any color that has a hint of yellow. For “cool” skin tones (light hair, eyes, and complexion), frames in a pink- or blue-based color are best. P.S. People with oval-shaped faces are blessed with the ability to wear eyeglass frames of any shape as long as the size of the frame is proportionate with the size of the face.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Viking Lodge has planned its third annual chili cook-off for 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at 104 N. VanNortwick Ave., Batavia. The event will benefit

Batavia United Way and the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp. Tasting tickets cost $5 each and are available from Batavia Viking members and the Batavia United Way. All are welcome to partici-

pate. Cooks will prepare the chili on site, with no fillers. The entry fee to cook is $20. For information, call Bill Pierson of Illinois’ local CASI chapter, the Chillini Chili Pod, at 630-879-7934 or call Jody

Haltenhof of Batavia United Way at 630-879-4041 or send email to jody@bataviaunitedway.org. A downloadable PDF with an entry form is available at www.BataviaUnitedWay.org.

Fermilab builds camera to help understand universe By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermilab scientist Josh Frieman hopes that the world’s most powerful digital camera – which was built at Fermilab – will provide some answers as to why the expansion of the uni-

verse is speeding up, instead of slowing down because of gravity. “We don’t have a physical explanation,” said Frieman, who also is a professor at the University of Chicago. “Using the Dark Energy Camera, we hope it will help us answer the nature of Dark Energy or

whatever is causing the expansion of the universe.” Scientists last month began using the camera to begin a five-year mission to map the southern sky in unprecedented detail. Frieman is director of the Dark Energy Survey. The Dark Energy Camera is a 570-megapixel digital

camera built at Fermilab and mounted on the 4-meter Victor M. Blanco telescope at the National Science Foundation’s Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains in Chile. The camera includes five precisely shaped lenses, the largest nearly a yard across, that together provide sharp images over its entire field of view.

“We’ve been testing it out for the last year,” Frieman said. “It’s been working well.” The camera will be able to see light from more than 100,000 galaxies up to 8 billion lightyears away in each snapshot. “It will produce the biggest map of the universe to date,” Frieman said. “We will also gain an understanding of how galaxies form.”

BATAVIA – After several property owners recently voiced concerns about a special service area being proposed to fund the Batavia MainStreet organization, city staff will try to address those concerns. City staff met with representatives from Batavia MainStreet as well as several of the property owners to discuss and work out some of the issues that were raised. A special service area to fund Batavia MainStreet was established in November 2008, but that special service area expires in November. The new special service area would cover the same area as the existing one. “The original SSA created a situation where property owners overpaid into the tax increment financing district due to the tax ‘increment’ being calculated with the SSA levy added,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said in a memo to city officials. “This created an unintended surplus into the TIF by approximately $108,000 over the five-year SSA period.” Buening said the surplus was caused because of the way the County Tax Extension office levies the tax on properties that are both in a TIF District and an SSA per state assessment requirements. In addressing the concerns that were raised, staff suggested a number of changes, including: • No levy of special service taxes for the first 2 1/2 years to pay down the TIF “overage” created with the SSA/TIF overlap. • Payment of the “overage” on a yearly basis rather than a lump sum. Aldermen on Sept. 3 voted to continue the public hearing on the proposed special service area to the Monday, Sept. 16, Batavia City Council meeting to work out final details.

Illinois Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Doug Whitley, a Batavia resident, announced Sept. 5 he will retire from the organization next June. Whitley, 63, became president and CEO in September 2001. Over the years, he has been the guest speaker at many Batavia Chamber of Commerce events. “He’s certainly brought new life and new energy to the Illinois Chamber and, more broadly, to the Illinois business community,” Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Roger Breisch said in reacting to the news. “It’s a sad day in Batavia.” Whitley, who has lived in Batavia for 20 years, said now was the right time to announce his retirement. He noted that when he steps down, he will have been in the job for more than 13

years. “That’s a good, long run,” he said. Whitley said he also wanted the Illinois Chamber to have a new leader before the 2014 gubernatorial election. During his tenure, the Illinois Chamber has represented business interests on matters including pushing for workers’ compensation reform; help to defeat a proposed gross receipts tax; founding and co-chairing the Transportation for Illinois Coalition and seeking legislation to bring long-term solvency to Illinois public pension systems. “I think we have re-established the Illinois Chamber as a significant voice for business in Illinois,” Whitley said. He said his biggest disappointment has been that “the elected officials of the state have failed to severely attack the state’s high unemployment numbers.”

R/Evolving Circus offers pop-up fun By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – It’s hard for Greta Bell to describe her colorful and animated R/Evolving Circus performance art piece. Simply put, it’s an 8-foot-tall carousel that’s powered by a bicycle. While it spins, it displays colorful oil paintings of treasured items that hold a lot of significance to someone. “It doesn’t matter where I go ... people say, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this,’ and I say, ‘You never will again because it’s really unusual,’” she said. Bell, who lives in Batavia, has been working on the piece since October 2011, when fellow artist Jim Jenkins of Geneva helped her build the carousel. Initially, the carousel was 12 feet tall, making it too large to travel with. Jenkins helped scale it down to 8 feet in height, and since the spring, Bell has been able to travel with the R/Evolving Circus, otherwise known as Our Evolving Circus. Her goal, she said, is to bring the carousel to places where people might not have as much access to art, such as schools in certain areas, nursing homes and even prisons. It takes her about two hours to assemble the piece, and once it’s up, people can read the stories of sentiment associated with each painting. The paintings are of objects, such as a cassette tape, a chandelier, a wood stove and a wheelbarrow. Bell also has been collecting narratives of the memories tied to each piece. “It’s a whimsical thing,” she said. “It’s just for fun and to make people happy.” But in order for the R/Evolving Circus to come to life, Bell said she needs people to participate by sending her their stories

Greta Bell, an artist from Batavia, has been taking her performance art piece, the R/Evolving Circus, around the country. Her pop-up carousel, powered by a bicycle, was in Lubec, Maine, among other areas.

and memories through her website, www.gretabell.com. That’s how it evolves, she said. So far, Bell has painted 35 of what she calls stories on pieces of canvas, which measure 2-by-4 feet. She said her goal is to paint one piece of canvas each month to keep the circus evolving. To date, she’s taken her circus to Canada; the most eastern part of mainland in the United States, which is in Maine; New York; and Vermont. “It’s very, very fun and rewarding,” she said. “I want to do it for at least 35 more years. I’m not really a traveler, but this forces me to get out of my com-

fort zone.” She said the piece tends to draw all sorts of people, including those who are purely interested in the mechanics of the carousel and those who are drawn to the bright, colorful paintings. A pair of puppets, who are dressed to match Jenkins and Bell, also help draw interest, Bell said. “I get to draw in a whole section of people who wouldn’t care about, quote unquote, art,” she said. Bell’s R/Evolving Circus will be on display at the Art in Your Eye festival in Batavia on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22. People can watch her set up the carousel starting at 10 a.m. each day, and Bell said she plans

Greta Bell of Batavia has been working since October 2011 to create her R/ Evolving Circus performance art piece. She’ll showcase her bicycle-powered carousel at the Art In Your Eye festival Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22. to give a short 15-minute presentation and read some of the stories associated with her pieces at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Bell said she couldn’t have executed the piece without the help of her family and strong community support. She said she hopes the piece simply brings

joy to peoples’ lives because it’s reminiscent of the joy she felt as a child when something new and exciting would come along. “I’m hesitant to sell anything,” she said of her canvas paintings. “I’m just creating a little bit of joy and making people feel special.”

And then he started hiring me for gigs soon after that. So, that one connection from being in the ECC Jazz Band has lasted almost 20 years now. Also, I got to meet drummer Louie Bellson. He hired me for a bunch of stuff and he wrote the liner notes for my first CD, and I’m on a video with him. He was also a guest artist with the ECC Jazz Band. So, in addition to getting to meet people like that, which is almost unheard of nowadays, it really made me hone my skills. I didn’t want to sound crappy getting to play with these people, and I wanted to impress them. I really feel getting to play with these people as a young teenager at ECC helped me out very much to this day.

had a horrible car accident two and a half years ago. A ... driver plowed into me and dislocated some ribs. I didn’t know how much I would be playing after that. And I know a lot of times people talk about what happened about 20 years ago, when I had my right middle finger cut off. So, I really have had enough accidents that would put somebody out of commission completely, especially this last one, where I easily could have died. I’m still in physical therapy two and half years later. I didn’t really know how much in demand I would be, to be honest. Maybe it’s because I have enough of my own style going on at this point and that I kind of contribute a lot of energy. Also, I like improvising in a way that is a little more risk-based, and I

While he still was in high school, saxophonist Frank Catalano had already performed with the likes of Tony Bennett, Miles Davis and Stan Getz. Now 36, the Chicago-born and Grammy Award-winning Catalano is the featured performer at the second annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend, which will run Thursday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Sept. 15. A schedule of performers and participating venues is at www.stcjazzweekend.com. The event is put on by the St. Charles Downtown Partnership, and the Kane County Chronicle is a premier media sponsor of the event. Kane County Chronicle Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Catalano about his illustrious career.

Ironically, for the Saturday portion at The House Pub, I also got invited by a couple of the guys from the band Wilco to do this festival that day with them called the Beethoven Festival, which is an international festival. I’m going to pull some double duty that day.

‘Let’s Misbehave’ showcases Cole Porter classics By TOM WITOM

If you go

planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Cole Porter, known for his urbane wit and bouncy melodies, did some of his best work during the 1920s and ’30s, but the prolific composer-songwriter’s contributions to stage and cinema were no flash in the pan. The artist’s musical legacy – from irresistible romantic numbers to quirky comical ditties – still resonates with modern audiences as well as those of a certain age. For proof, look no further than Fox Valley Repertory’s superb production of “Let’s Misbehave!” This fast-paced musical revue, smartly directed by Kevin Bellie, showcases some 30 of Porter’s legendary classics. The production, conceived by Patrick Young and Karin Bowerstock, draws from Porter’s well-known works like “Anything Goes” and “Kiss Me Kate” to late-career hits “Silk Stockings” and “CanCan.” Songs are deftly woven through a storyline involving three friends in New York during the 1930s who are unwinding in the wee hours of the morning after a party when they find themselves taking stock in their single-

Khaki Pixley and Blake Reddick appear in a scene from “Let’s Misbehave,” which is being performed at Fox Valley Repertory in St. Charles through Sunday, Oct. 20. hood. They long for a soul mate and make a pact to find true love before the year ends. But the quest gets complicated when the two women, Alice and Dorothy, fall for the same guy, Walter. Bellie, who also gets creative choreographing the

occasional dance steps that dovetail with many of the vocal numbers, has a first-rate cast that measures up to the demands of this challenging revue. Khaki Pixley, Blake Reddick and Heather Townsend are veteran actors, each gifted

with a strong, expressive voice. Individually and in combination, they smoothly sing and dance their way through the two-hour show. They are supported by onstage pianist Ryan Brewster, a tireless, unflappable musician who’s in perfect sync with the

performers. Townsend shines in the dreamy “In the Still of the Night” and opening-night audience members were humming the tune on the way out. Meanwhile, Pixley shows off her impressive vocal range in the amusing “Always True to You in My Fashion” and the tender “Let’s Not Talk About Love.” Reddick pleases in “You Do Something To Me.” But overall, the best work comes when the three team up for “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love,” “Begin the Beguine,” “Anything Goes,” “De-Lovely” and the title song “Let’s Misbehave!” Stylish costumes reflective of the period by Kimberly Morris fit right in with Bob Nauth’s elegant apartment set with its art deco-style side tables, glittery chandelier and floor-to-ceiling chrome-andglass backdrop leading to a sweeping balcony.

Library symposium to feature Batavia windmill history By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – It’s no wonder why Batavia was once nicknamed “The Windmill City.” It’s landscape is riddled with them, and according to the city of Batavia’s website, the town has a place in history as the windmill manufacturing capital of the world. Today, BatT. Lindsay avia has 18 hisBaker toric windmills throughout the city, with three additional windmills awaiting installment, according to a news release from the Batavia Public

Library. To celebrate Batavia’s collection of windmills and educate the public about “Batavia’s Place in Windmill History,” the library will host a daylong symposium Saturday, Sept. 14. The library symposium will be from 9 to 5 p.m. at the library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. The program will begin with a ceremony, in which representatives of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers of New York City will present a plaque to Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke in honor of Batavia’s collection of windmills as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, according to the release. Following the ceremony, a

slew of speakers will offer lectures, including Dr. T. Lindsay Baker of Rio Vista, Texas, who is an expert on American windmills, having published several books on the topic. He also is the editor of the Windmillers’ Gazette. Baker has been coming to Batavia since the 1970s, conducting research on wind-power history. “I’m delighted to have another opportunity to visit Batavia and to learn more, myself, about wind-power history,” he said. “I never come to Batavia without learning things I didn’t know.” During his presentation of “The American Windmill,” beginning at 10:30 a.m., Baker will discuss the history of

wind power in America, while comparing U.S. windmills to European windmills from yester-year to modern-day times. “I think [people] will have a much better understanding of the place of Batavia in the broader scheme of wind power history across the globe,” Baker said. “ ... I think that it’s important for us to understand how our fore-parents used the renewable power of the wind as a demonstration of how people today and of the future also will be able to use that clean source of renewable power.” Baker’s lecture will be the first of the 2013-14 season of the library’s Lyceum Lecture Series. Other speakers will in-

clude Christopher Gillis of Frederick, Md., who will present the lecture “From Batavia to Aermotor,” beginning at 1:30 p.m.; and Batavia’s windmill experts, Bob Popeck and Francine McGuire-Popeck, who will discuss “Batavia Windmills: Building Local, U.S. and World Economies” at 3 p.m. The symposium is free of charge and open to the public, although registration is required and can be completed online at www.BataviaPublicLibrary.org or by calling 630879-1393, ext. 200. Those who attend will receive a copy of “Windmill City: A Guide to the Historic Windmills of Batavia, Illinois.”

Cotto A Legna’s pizza, wine bar concept flourishes If you go Address: Cotto A Legna, 500 S. Third Street, Unit 147, Geneva Phone: 331-248-0263 Website: www.cottoalegna.com Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday; and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. An appetizer served at Cotto A Legna in Geneva is the Shrimp Cornetti ($12), which consists of five robust grilled shrimp brushed with garlic and an orange sauce then wrapped in Pancetta. street from the Geneva Metra station.) Settling in at a two-top near the window, our friendly waitress provided excellent service throughout the entirety of our experience. Around noon it was mildly busy on a Monday, but grew busier around 1 p.m. We started with the Shrimp Cornetti ($12), which consisted of five robust grilled shrimp brushed with

garlic and – strangely – an orange sauce then wrapped in Pancetta. The tangy and sweet flavors of the orange glaze teaming with the saltiness of the garlic and pancetta tasted good, but I would have liked the shrimp to be more of the star of the dish rather than the orange glaze that overpowered the other ingredients. For my entree, I opted to keep it classic with the

Napolitan favorite Pizza Margherita ($10), a 12-inch pie with tomato sauce, fresh Mozzarella, olive oil and basil. Urban legend has it that the Pizza Margherita was created in the late 1800s in honor of Queen consort Margherita of Savoy by Napolitan pizzamaker Raffaele Esposito, who used its ingredients to represent the Italian flag. Despite the story’s frail legitimacy, when the pie arrived, its rich hues of red, white and green actually did remind me of the Italian flag. My pizza was a thing of beauty. The gently charred edges gave an aromatic richness to the flavors of the Mozzarella’s saltiness, tang of the tomato and freshness of the basil. My dining companion ordered one of the pastas on a recommendation – the Pollo e Cavatappi with spinach, grilled chicken and Cavatappi noodles smothered in

a rich, creamy garlic sauce ($14). The hearty portion size and richness of the dish ended in leftovers, which we enjoyed later that evening with a glass of wine that paired very nicely. The restaurant’s wine bar has a boastful selection of varietals from Italy and beyond, sold mostly by the bottle, with a slightly more limited selection served by the glass. It also stocks Italian brews, such as Moretti & Moretti La Rossa and Menabrea Bionda. I’ve been to Cotto a couple other times when I ordered wine with my meal, and it really does add to the flavor profiles. Order wine – no matter what time it is. Between noon and 1 p.m. on a Monday afternoon, nearly every diner was sipping wine while enjoying his or her meal. If everyone’s doing it (just in this case) you should do it, too. Or as they say in Italy, “When in Rome ... .”

Bar Louie looks to set world records at ‘Rock the Tot’ eating contest PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Bar Louie in Geneva is looking to set world records during its sixth annual “Rock the Tot” tatertot eating contest Thursday, Sept. 19. Locations across the country will host the annual contest, which will be broken into two parts: team relay races and a solo competition. The relay race will be at 8 p.m., followed by the solo

competition, when a “Rock the Tot” champion will be crowned. Bar Louie is attempting to set a world record for most tater tots eaten simultaneously among all of the restaurant’s locations. The relay race teams will consist of four people. At the sound of a buzzer, the first team member will eat a pound of tots as fast as he or she can, followed by the second person and so on until every mem-

ber on the team has eaten a pound of tater tots. The team to finish its four pounds of tots in the quickest time wins four “Rock the Tot” champion T-shirts and free tots for a year at Bar Louie. Solo competitors will go head-to-head in a challenge to eat as many tater tots as possible in three minutes. At the end of the three minutes a winner will be determined and declared the “Rock the Tot” champion. All winners

will be declared locally. Local solo winners will receive a $250 Bar Louie gift card, a trophy, T-shirt and free tater tots for a year. The top five local winners will be awarded airfare and hotel accommodations to Cleveland, Ohio, to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and compete at Bar Louie Cleveland on Oct. 5 for the ultimate title of “Rock the Tot” national champion. The grand-prize winner will re-

ceive a $500 cash prize, free tater tots for life and will have the world record for most tots eaten in three minutes. Participants should arrive no later than 7:30 p.m. local time and are encouraged to bring fans and get creative with costumes. Bar Louie is located in the Geneva Commons at 1602 Commons Drive, Suite 600, in Geneva. To register, stop by the restaurant or visit www. rockthetot.com.

GENEVA – Cotto A Legna means cooked by wood in Italian, and the wine-bar infused restaurant is doing just that to make one of Napoli, Italy’s, famed foodie exports – pizza. Wood-fired pizza joints that use a brick oven and are fit with a wine bar have become quite a trend in recent years. But despite their simplicity, it’s not always easy to navigate who does it well. Neo’s in St. Charles and Cotto A Legna in Geneva happen to beat out much of the competition. Rusticity abounds when it comes to Cotta A Legna’s food and atmosphere. Dark wood floors with beige walls to complement the earthiness added by slate accent pillars, combine well with the gritty – yet vibrant – abstract images that adorn the walls. The restaurant’s sleek, lighter-wood tables are beset with minimalistic chocolate chairs, and a cushioned bench flanks an outer wall. Bar seating also swings around the brick oven, so diners can enjoy the pizza-making process during their experience. Cotto’s cutesy patio fit with orange umbrellas and a pergola, provides a peaceful setting for al-fresco dining despite the train traffic across the street. (The restaurant is located across the

Water Street Studios fundraiser spotlights fashion By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Sharon Sychta of Batavia knew she wanted to make a bold statement with her fabric and metal dress, which featured a 6-foot diameter bottom hoop. “I wanted it to fill the runway,” she said. The dress was just one of the cutting edge fashions on display at Water Street Studios on Sept. 7 as part of the organization’s second annual On-som’ bel fundraiser. This year’s theme was “The Chair and What You Wear.” Fittingly, the dress that Sychta designed featured a metal cage and a chair inside. “I wanted to create beauty and comfort and intrigue and mystery,” Sychta said. Sychta was one of the original board members of the nonprofit Water Street Studios, which is marking its fifth anniversary this year. “It’s good to be part of all of this,” Sychta said. Modeling the dress was her daughter, Claire Sychta, 17, a senior at Batavia High School. “It was fun to wear,” she said. “I’m really proud of my mom.” Claire Sychta herself designed a dress made out of coffee filters that took second place at Batavia High School’s Rock the Runway event in May. The dress will be part of the Student Legacy Project at the Art In Your Eye fine art show and festival in Batavia on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22. Sarah Pomaro of Geneva modeled “electric chair” leather cuffs and collar with metal chains during On-som’ bel. She became involved in the show at the last minute. “I am good friends with one of the organizers,” she said. “They were short a model. They needed someone who could walk down the runway and look confident.” She was happy to help out. She also helped with last year’s event. “I want to support them,” Pomaro said. “Water Street Studios is doing something special. They do a lot of outreach.” One of the outfits that Sandra Leonard of Chicago designed featured a hand-painted purple and white “flower” top with a textured skirt and head wrap scarf. “I call it sculptural clothing,” she said. “I like to paint my own fabrics.” An auction at the event raised about $8,000 for Water Street Studios.

St. Charles North’s Jaclyn Taylor (9) and Sophia DuVall (11) block the ball during their 25-23, 25-21 win Sept. 10 over Batavia.

STC North girls volleyball defeats Batavia By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – St. Charles North tussled with Batavia throughout Sept. 10 Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls volleyball opener. Double-digit leads? Forget about them. Peace of mind? Not until the final point dropped. North may have maintained its hot start with a 25-23, 25-21 sweep, but not before exhaling first. And then quickly moving on. “We’re always training to be ready for that next match,” North Stars middle blocker Emily Carroll said. “Even though we’re 10-0, we never

settle. It’s not good enough for us. We always try to be better, and better ourselves for the next match.” Batavia (5-5, 0-1 UEC River) served aggressively and kept North out of system for much of the night, a rarity for the North Stars (10-0, 1-0) to date. “That was our goal,” Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne said, “but sometimes out of system is not a good thing, because Taylor Krage can hit in the back row.” Krage, the North Stars’ Northern Illinois-bound senior outside hitter, smacked a match-high nine kills, including one to seal Game 1. Sophia DuVall (five kills) and Daley Krage (four) were next.

Audrey Faulhaber (nine digs), Maddie Jaudon (eight) and Heather Meyer (eight) challenged North’s hitters, helping Batavia lead as late as 23-22 in the first game and 1816 in the second. Ultimately, North persevered with a focus that has wowed coach Lindsey Hawkins since summer workouts, when players pledged their accountability to each other and to making the most of an experienced, talented core. “We have a lot of girls that stay calm,” Taylor Krage said. “We don’t really freak out on the court, and we kind of just keep playing volleyball no matter what.” Of course, part of playing

volleyball entails what some bystanders would consider “freaking out.” At least after big points. A pregame announcement warned a boisterous “Pack The Place” crowd against the use of artificial noisemakers. Naturally, it didn’t apply to the North Stars or Bulldogs. Eventually, North used that encouragement to its advantage at the net, as Claire Anderson, Jaclyn Taylor, Carroll and DuVall stood up to a Batavia attack led by Meyer (eight kills) and Shea Stanley (six). “Honestly, just being loud and cheering each other on just motivates everyone to get that block,” Carroll said.

Sydney Wohlert dished 15 assists for North, which Audrey Faulhaber had 22 for Batavia. The Bulldogs host defending 4A state champion Benet Thursday, Sept. 12. Batavia counts losses to 3A champ St. Francis and perennial power Providence, as well, and hopes the North result will continue their bid to be a force down the stretch. “Our schedule, we play that tough schedule to get ready for games like this, and we stayed in there with them, but I thought that we could have done even a little better tonight,” Trippi-Payne said. “What can you do, right? They’re a good team.”

Build yourself a better breakfast Try a pattern of eating healthful foods all day By Anne Raih More Content Now

Don’t forget about breakfast! Some say it’s the most important meal of the day, because it gives you energy, keeps you full, and gets your brain and body ready to pay attention and learn in school. But not all breakfast foods are created equally. If you normally eat foods that are high in sugar for breakfast (like many frosted cereals, doughnuts and other treats), you might ind yourself low in energy, and feeling very hungry by the time lunch rolls around. Instead, you should look for foods that have whole grains, dairy, fruit and good protein to start your day off with enough nu-

trients to keep you going. Here are some good alternatives to sugary cereal and breakfast bars: n Eat your wheat! Not all cereal is bad for you. Look for cereal that has lots of iber and whole grains — good stuff that will keep you full for most of the day. With the added calcium from milk, you are setting yourself up for a good day. If you need something sweet, add fresh blueberries or strawberries to your bowl. n Go for yogurt. It’s quick and easy, illed with things that are good for you and tastes great. Check the label of your favorite yogurt to make sure it doesn’t have too much sugar. If you don’t like it plain, add some cereal or granola, slice up a banana, or sprinkle in some strawberries and blueberries. n Make an egg. Eggs are a good source of protein, which gives you energy and helps you grow into

DRAWING WITH MARK!

a strong and healthy kid. Protein also helps you feel full longer. If you can always hear your stomach growling when it’s time to head to lunch, maybe it’s time to add some protein to your breakfast. n Have a banana. This one’s pretty easy. We’ve all had to rush out the door to get the bus as it is about to pull away from the curb — but that’s no excuse to not get breakfast in the morning. Bananas are one of the fastest and easiest breakfasts around. To make them extra good (and add some extra protein), dip your banana bites in peanut butter. Don’t like bananas? Apples and peanut butter make a great breakfast, too. These rules don’t stop at breakfast! All kids should remember to eat healthfully at lunch, too. Skip the chips, ditch the candy, toss the soda — and watch out for added sugars.
