Wagon rides provide outdoor fun PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Miller I’ve been told there’s nothing like the bond between a mother and a son. Growing up with three older sisters, there was plenty of dolls, dress up and drama to go around. But once my sisters had boys, there was something so special about their relationship and the way my nephews looked up to their mothers.

Throughout the year, the Batavia Park District offers many events, but one of the most special to attend is the Mom Son Wagon Ride. In the six years I’ve been with the district, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this event numerous times.

There are plenty of daddy-daughter events throughout the suburbs, including in Batavia, but this event is the perfect opportunity for moms to spend some quality time with their sons.

Years ago, the event was held indoors, and moms and sons would have dinner, then watch some form of entertainment.

But a couple years back, the recreation department wanted to switch things up.

The event was meant to give moms quality one-on-one time with their sons, and it’s no secret that boys love the outdoors. So, after brainstorming ideas, the Mom Son Wagon Ride was born.

During the event, moms and their son(s) will take a tractor-pulled wagon ride through a former tree nursery at the scenic West Main Community Park, 40W101 W. Main St., Batavia. They

Then they make their way back to the pavilion where hot dogs, chips and hot chocolate will be waiting.

After dinner, participants can huddle around the campfire, listen to stories and make s’mores.

Holly Deitchman of Batavia took her sons Adam, 7, and Logan, 4, to the event last year. It was the trio’s first time attending the event.

“The boys love tractor rides and s’mores, so this event was right up their alley,” said Deitchman. “My favorite part was snuggling up with them on the tractor ride since it was a little chilly, and they loved being able to sip hot chocolate and make s’mores.”

Deitchman already has her boys signed up for this year’s event and has recommended the event to other moms.

“My boys were super excited when I told them I was signing us up again this year,” she said, “They ran down the street to tell

their neighbor friends that they should sign up too!”

This year’s event will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at West Main Community Park.

It’s open to moms with sons ages 3 through 12. The cost is $10 for residents and $13 for nonresidents.

Price is per person. Wagon rides start from the parking lot at 6 p.m., and a storyteller has been added to the event from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m.

“My boys love storytime at home,” Deitchman said, “so if you combine that with s’mores and hot chocolate that is a big win for us.”

Landlord of massage parlor to pay restitution

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The landlord of a building used as a massage parlor must pay Elburn restitution, according to Kane County court records.

Elburn Building Commissioner Thomas Brennan filed complaints in July against the landlord of 151 E. Route 38 and the proprietor of Asian Massage and Body Works, which occupied Unit E, because the village’s zoning code did not permit an adult massage parlor in that business district.

The use of the property changed from a tanning and nail salon to a massage facility after April 1, according to the complaint.

Representatives for the landlord, Nevada company Redoaks, did not appear in court last month, records show.

The village was granted a motion for default judgment, which village attorney Brian O’Connor described as standard procedure.

Elburn asked that Redoaks pay for Brennan’s time enforcing the matter as well as the village’s attorney fees, according to records.

Records indicate Redoaks must pay $2,655 in costs and fines, including $1,765 in restitution.

Meanwhile, the business’s proprietor, Xiaomei-Feng Castro, pleaded not guilty, according to records. A bench trial is scheduled Friday.

O’Connor expects the matter to be resolved that day, much like court hearings for speeding and parking tickets, he said.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The old oak in the Kirkwood subdivision in Geneva was two feet wide when it fell down in a recent wind.

As a tree service began cutting the log into manageable pieces, they found a hive of wild bees inside. That’s where Geneva resident Glenn Mize stepped in.

“I was called to save the bees,” said Mize, 38, a beekeeper. “A lot of the bees had actually got smashed when the tree fell. I used a chain saw to score and wedge the log and a sledge hammer to split it open. I just removed each piece of comb gently to a bee box to try to save as many bees as possible.”

Saving the bees was important, as they are becoming more valuable because they have been facing more challenges. Among them, Mize said, are colony collapse disorder, attacks by predatory mites and now small hive beetles, as well as habitat destruction and pesticide use.

“With all of these things, it’s a wonder honeybees have made it this far,” Mize said.

“The bees – they’re trying to tell us something. We are manipulating their existence too much.”

As to the method of moving a swarm of wild honeybees, Mize said he laced the hive with bee pheromones as a lure and left it where the 30,000 to 40,000 surviving bees from the fallen log could migrate once they calmed down

“First, their tree collapsed and then landscapers cut through the middle of their home with a chainsaw and then tried to use a leaf blower on them before I got there,” Mize said. “They’ve had a rough week.”

ton Hills village trustee and a beekeeper for the historical Garfield Farm, echoed Mize’s observations about challenges and stress for the honeybee population.

Andersen believes the honeybee numbers are down in the local area.

“We still have issues with natural problems they have

– mites and bacterial infections – and also pesticide spraying,” Andersen said. “I lost a hive this year because a farmer sprayed during high winds, and basically I lost the whole honey crop. I don’t know how many bees make it back to the hive contaminated, and so I cannot use any of the honey. It wiped out a whole hive.”

Andersen also maintains beehives at the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension’s gardens at Peck Road and Route 38.

“No spraying is done there, so the bees are pretty protected,” Andersen said.

But the effect of pesticides on the world bee population has been noted in concerns over global agriculture. The

DeWitte appointed to county RTA position

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen on Tuesday announced that former St. Charles mayor Don DeWitte will represent the county on the Regional Transportation Authority board and Manuel Barbosa, a retired federal bankruptcy judge who lives in Elgin, will become the county’s representative on the Metra board.

DeWitte served as Third Ward alderman for St. Charles from 1993 to 2005, and served as mayor from 2005 until 2013.

In his cover letter, he said that as mayor, he oversaw a $140 million organization and has “gained insight and expertise in multi-jurisdictional transportation related projects” such as the Red Gate Bridge and the reconstruction of Route 64 on the east side of St. Charles.

Lauzen disclosed that DeWitte did support him politi-

cally in the past.

“For those who say DeWitte is a political ally, that is halftrue,” Lauzen said. “He supported me in two campaigns and supported my opponent in two campaigns. The bottom line on Don DeWitte is that he thinks for himself.”

DeWitte said Lauzen’s statement about his past political support was accurate and said he’s supported both Lauzen and his opponents in various races.

“I would hope that would diminish some concerns people have regarding that allegation or concern,” he said, adding that he looks forward to “being a vigilant steward to the taxpayers of Kane County who have contributed millions to the RTA transit system.”

DeWitte’s term on the RTA board expires in April 2017.

Barbosa’s resume includes working in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant state’s attorney, as well as two law firms, includ-

ing his own.

He was appointed as a U.S. bankruptcy judge in 1998, and Lauzen said Barbosa served in that position for 16 years.

In his cover letter, he said that he does not plan to practice law or pursue any other full-time employment “so that I could devote as much time as needed to do a good job.”

After the meeting, Lauzen said choosing Barbosa was more for his sense of integrity than his transportation expertise.

Lauzen said as a federal bankruptcy judge, Barbosa had to go through extensive background checks and “remained apolitical” in his posts.

Barbosa could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Barbosa’s term on the Metra board expires in March 2016.

More than 40 candidates were considered for the two positions and were quickly narrowed down between last week and Tuesday.

volved, it could be up and running by August, Schlichter said. Officials were not looking for a vote as of yet. Board members showed support, but they had questions. Board member Tony Valente repeatedly asked for data to support that such a consortium would be effective.

Schuler said there has been data to show that blended learning works. Students who were not meeting standards were showing progress, he said. Schuler also said the district would “have the best deal in that consortium.”

Board member Veronica Bruhl said she would want to know what the cost might be for future phases, in case “there might be some big cost we can’t afford.” Schuler said the cost for such an endeavor without partners might be too high.

“This is the way Kaneland is going to do any of this,” Schuler said.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – A teacher at the Fox Valley Career Center suffered burns in a classroom activity Tuesday morning and was taken from the school via helicopter to a hospital. Kaneland School District 302 Superintendent Jeff Schuler said the teacher’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The incident happened at 9:10 a.m. at the career center, which is at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. The career center is not exclusive to Kaneland students. Schuler said no students were injured.

Schuler would not release the teacher’s name, and he would not say which subject he taught.

“Certainly, our thoughts and concerns are with the staff member and his family,” Schuler said.

Schuler described it as an accident in one of the school’s lab classes. Students were present at the time, but Schuler said only the teacher was hurt. First responders determined the teacher needed to be transported by helicopter because of the burns suffered. The Life Star helicopter landed on the east side of Kaneland High School to transport the teacher, Schuler said.

In an unrelated incident, about the same time Tuesday, a student at the career center experienced some heat-related symptoms, according to a news release.

The student was stable but was taken from the school by ambulance as a precaution.

SUGAR GROVE – Eyeing a future that will incorporate an increasing amount of Internet-based learning opportunities, Kaneland School District 302 officials will consider joining a consortium of districts – including Batavia’s – to help in that effort.

Erika Schlichter, the district’s director of educational services for sixth through 12th grade, spoke to school board members and officials Monday night at the board meeting at Harter Middle School.

In the consortium, Kaneland would join the Batavia, Wheaton-Warrenville, Naperville and Indian Prairie school districts.

The plan would call for increasing options for online and “blended learning,” including how the districts could share resources and costs. Before the

presentation, Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler pointed out that the plan was different than the online charter school plan presented by K12 Inc. Schuler said the problem with the charter school project was that “it was brought to us as an all-or-nothing, with no local engagement.”

“Blended learning” calls for a mix of online and classroom learning, and that is something Kaneland already offers to an extent, according to the presentation. In the consortium, the districts would work with the Evergreen Education Group in developing the first phase at a total cost of $40,000 over three months. Kaneland’s total share of that would be $3,000, as officials noted the money paid would be based on student enrollment, and District 302 has the smallest enrollment in the group.

Sugar Grove resident joins District 302 school board

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Peter Lopatin was seated Monday night as the newest member of the Kaneland School District 302 board. Lopatin, a Sugar Grove resident, was sworn in at the board’s meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Lopatin emerged from a field of five candidates.

He regularly attends board meetings, and he is a member of the Kaneland Citizens Advisory Committee and the Kaneland Arts Initiative. He is married to Diane McFarlin, the assistant principal at Kaneland High School, and he is the stepfather of a Kaneland student.

He fills the seat vacated by Joe Oberweis, who has moved to Batavia.

Lopatin participated in the

board’s meeting Monday, asking questions on a presentation about the district’s online and “blended learning” plans.

Lopatin previously sought to run for a board seat, but because three members were from Sugar Grove Township, he was unable to serve.

Oberweis was from Sugar Grove, and his Peter departure allowed a Sugar Lopatin Grove Township resident to take a seat on the board.

Cheryl Krauspe, the school board’s president, said “the level of experience for all candidates was impressive.” Interviews took place Saturday.

Another candidate for the position, Sugar Grove Township resident Jerry Elliott, praised the process. Elliott,

another regular at board meetings, said he would explore a run at a board seat in the future.

“I’m very happy with the board itself and the performance of the school district,” said Elliott, who added that he can “get upset” about the spending at times. For instance, Elliott and Sugar Grove Township resident Dan Nagel recently pushed the board to explain why a warranty couldn’t be located to help pay for roof repair work that had to be done at John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove.

Elliott said he intends to continue going to board meetings.

“More people should be involved and participate in it,” he said. “Why aren’t there more people coming out to the meetings? … It makes no sense to me.”

“It’s been a tough year for honeybees,” Bell said. “Bees

came off a hard winter.

“They ate so much of their honey stores, and it was so cold later and extended, they could not do cleansing flights.”

Bell said bees will not defecate in their hives. They wait until temperatures rise to about 35 degrees, then take a flight to cleanse themselves.

For Bell, mites and small hive beetles are big factors affecting all honeybees, those kept by beekeepers and wild or feral hives.

“Mites were introduced in 1986 and began to devastate the feral population, making managed bees all the more important,” Bell said.

“I would encourage people to plant bee-friendly plants and not use pesticides on their plants or their yards.”

Or better yet, he said, become a beekeeper and keep one or two hives in the backyard.

“There are folks who keep bees on balconies in Chicago,” Bell said.

McKeown said Ross tried to pressure him to resolve a flooding issue with Elleby or Ross would report it to the village. “ ‘You don’t want that to happen because they will come out here and bulldoze everything, trees and all and put in commercial grade rocks, and it will look terrible,’ ” McKeown quoted Ross in a letter he gave to police when he filed a complaint. “ ‘You have 48 hours to come to an agreement,’” McKeown alleged Ross said in his letter.

“All I can react to is what she said to me under a pressure situation,” McKeown said. “That is how I reacted, and that is the reason for tak-

ing the action I did.”

Ross said “the whole thing was blown out of proportion.”

“I am very cordial. ... I definitely want to say to Mr. McKeown that I apologize,” Ross said.

Ross said she was inspecting Elleby’s property because she had filed a request to have the assessment reduced because of flooding. Ross said Elleby has had continuing flood problems since McKeown’s house was built next to hers in 2001.

Ross said she has been to 25 township residents’ properties to consider assessment reductions based on flooding, and Elleby’s was one of them. Ross said Elleby’s son videotaped the meeting between them.

Ross said she did not have

access to the video, and Elleby said she had no comment about the issue with her neighbor, nor about the videotape of their meeting.

Police Chief Patrick Rollins said he referred the issue to the village administrator. Rollins said he would not release the police report McKeown filed.

According to an Aug. 6 letter sent to both Elleby and McKeown, Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger detailed a review by consulting civil engineers, who determined the problem was between the neighbors.

The village’s position is to agree that “some refinement of the swale could improve the drainage in the rear and side yards,” but it is an issue

SUGAR GROVE – A longstanding dispute between neighbors in Sugar Grove came to a head recently when it also involved an allegation that Sugar Grove Township Assessor Laura Ross misrepresented herself.

According to Ted McKeown of the 300 block of Annette’s Lane, Ross and his next-door neighbor, Beverly Elleby, came to his house July 24 to talk about flooding on Elleby’s property.

Balkema joins race

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – In announcing that he is running for Congress in the 11th Congressional District, Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema on Tuesday said he would work to break the gridlock in Congress.

“That is unproductive to the average family in America that is trying to make ends meet,” Balkema said after his announcement at Superior Asphalt in North Aurora, a division of Geneva Construction. Balkema said the country needed “another 100,000 of these businesses around the country to fuel the economic engine.”

Balkema is running for the seat now held by U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville. Balkema will run as a Republican in the March 18 primary election, and will face challengers like conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora and State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville.

Balkema has been a manager at Caterpillar for 20 years and has been on the Grundy County Board since 2010.

John Bryan, president of Geneva Construction, said he is worried about reduced federal dollars for transportation needs and the impact that would have.

“We are the business of the middle class,” Bryan said.

“We are the people that employ them. It’s not only good for the local economy, but also good for the Midwest.”

Bryan said he has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race.

The 11th District includes North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet. Balkema lives in Channahon with his wife, Jill, and their two sons, but he said his job has made him familiar with all parts of the district.

“I spend a lot of time in lots of different parts of the district,” Balkema said.

Foster has held the seat since November after defeating former U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert. From 2008 to 2011, Foster represented Illinois’ 14th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Foster was defeated November 2010 by then-state Sen. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An investigation into DUI reporting errors during former Kane County Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller’s leadership showed no acts of criminal conduct or intentional wrongdoing, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

“From my perspective, we’re done with this inquiry,” he said.

The investigation – which was prompted by a June 20 letter from past chairmen of the Kane County Board’s Judicial Public Safety Committee – addressed driving under the influence convictions that weren’t registered with the Illinois Secretary of State.

McMahon said the Circuit Clerk’s Office submitted the information to the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, which then would forward the information to the Illinois Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State works to match those convictions with a driver’s license number, he said. In some cases, he said, transposed numbers or inconsistencies in middle initials would cause the report to

be returned to the circuit clerk with error codes. He said errors also would occur when someone convicted of DUI didn’t have a driver’s license.

Those error reports weren’t addressed until 2009, McMahon said.

Tom Hartwell, the current circuit clerk, said his staff has been auditing the DUI convictions from 2002 to 2008.

Of the 13,703 total cases, he said, 3,667 are left to review.

He said 1,734 have needed action.

Hartwell expects the audit will be completed within a month, he said.

“We’re getting through the pile,” Hartwell said.

Because the state’s attorney’s office also receives information from the state police, its own records and the clerk’s records, McMahon said it is unlikely the errors would have affected the way his office prosecuted cases.

For example, a repeat offender who was away from a felony DUI charge wouldn’t slip through the system.

McMahon thanked members of Hartwell’s staff for their cooperation.

“We received outstanding cooperation from the deputy clerks,” he said.

The second class, on Sept. 25 is “disaster psychology,” also at Village Hall.

The remaining classes are at Elburn Fire Station 2, 39W950 Hughes Road, in Elburn. Those classes are “fire suppression” on Oct. 2, “medical operations 1” on Oct. 9, “medical operations 2” on Oct. 16, “search and rescue” on Oct. 23 and “CERT and terrorism” on Oct. 30.

Gualdoni said there will be hands-on training. Participants will learn how to use a fire extinguisher, for instance.

And there is much detail in the medical operations sessions.

Elburn CERT classes will be offered Wednesday nights, starting Sept. 18. With session titles such as “disaster psychology” and “CERT and terrorism,” it’s likely most would have an opportunity to learn something new. Dave Gualdoni, an Elburn Village Board member, helps facilitate the classes, but he stressed that the instruction mostly comes from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Classes are free, but those interested should visit www. elburncert.org and click on “Contact Us.” Once there, they should type in their name and an email address, as well as other contact information requested in the message. They will be contacted and signed up for the sessions.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The investigation into last week’s bomb threats at Kane County courthouses remains active, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday during his monthly meeting with reporters.

Nobody has been charged, he said.

The Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township, Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles and Elgin Branch Court in Elgin were evacuated Sept. 4 after two bomb threats were called in.

The buildings were reopened later that day.

If the intent behind the threats is to frustrate or inconvenience McMahon’s staff and other county employees, that doesn’t work, he said. It just pushes their work back.

The real inconvenience is to the people who come to the courthouse to resolve their case, including criminal matters and divorce decrees, McMahon said.

Some, he said, take time off work or school to do so and are forced to take a second day off.

Proposal draws mixed reactions from commissioners ance and utility costs.

He said that would cost the average household 83 cents a year.

During a public comment period, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen asked commissioners to consider voting no or delaying the vote to weigh other funding options to close the $150,000 gap until more of the county’s debt service will be paid off.

duties have been stretched as the forest preserve district has acquired an additional 2,000 acres of land since 2011.

He said no new staff members would be hired with money from the tax levy.

Other commissioners suggested using riverboat casino money, money from the county’s fund balance or farm lease funds to cover the expenses, but said none would be longterm solutions.

Another option would be to cut services and staff.

Hoscheit said taxpayers can expect some reprieve in 2016 and 2017, when the county is done paying off two major components of its debt service.

He said an average household can expect to save $40 annually in property taxes in 2016, and $48 in property taxes in 2017.

The proposal drew mixed reactions from commission-

ers, including Barb Wojnicki, who called the county’s open space “the ultimate tax cap,” and Brian Pollock, who said his constituents repeatedly asked him not to raise property taxes.

Commissioner Joseph Haimann noted that taxpayers are struggling, and the large increase in families using local food pantries is proof of that.

Commissioners ultimately decided to table the matter for 30 days and come back with alternate proposals for how to raise the funds.

Remembering Sept. 11, 2001 It has been 12 years since we watched steel and metal rain from the sky.

We watched in disbelief and shock as Islamic terrorists flew their hijacked planes into what seemed like impenetrable structures and a field, as heroes rushed into burning buildings and as the fatality count reached nearly 3,000 people.

We united, and we cried, prayed, raged and mourned.

Our country forever changed that day. Whether the changes wrought by 9/11 were good, bad or somewhere in between has yet to be determined.

We have yet to recapture the sense of solidarity the country exhibited in the weeks after the attack.

Partisanship, not compromise, is now the way of doing business.

We struggle to balance giving the government powers to keep us safe from the threat of terrorism with safeguarding the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

And we mourn the more than 6,600 U.S. soldiers who have died in the two U.S.-led wars promoted by that day, in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The last U.S. combat troops left Iraq in 2011. More than 60,000 remain as part of the NATO force in Afghanistan, fighting to preserve the freedoms we cherish. We thank them, knowing our words don’t even start to compensate the debt all soldiers pay for protecting us.

But today shouldn’t be about the political fighting, or a debate about whether NSA eavesdropping is legal or other issues that get people’s blood boiling.

Leave that for tomorrow.

Today is about the nearly 3,000 souls who left the world too soon.

It’s about the loved ones they left behind, who think about 9/11 more than once a year, and the thousands of others affected by the day our collective innocence was forever lost.

We remember – forever.

More than 11,000 backpack and back-carrying-device injuries were estimated to have occurred in the U.S. in 2012, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Backpacks are a popular and practical way to carry school supplies and books.

They are designed to distribute the weight of the load among the body’s strongest muscles. When they are too

heavy or worn incorrectly, backpacks can cause problems. Improperly used, backpacks may injure muscles and joints, which can lead to severe back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as postural problems.

When choosing a backpack, look for one that is lightweight and an appropriate size for your student. Make sure it has two wide, padded shoulder straps and a waist strap. Another option would be to choose a rolling backpack.

To properly carry the backpack, tighten the straps to comfortably fit the student. Always pack lightly. Carry only the books and supplies that you

will need. Ideally, the backpack should not weigh more than 15 percent of the child’s body weight, according to the American Physical Therapy Association and other experts. Heavier items should be packed first, close to the body. If the child needs to lean forward to carry the pack, it is too heavy. Remember to lift the backpack properly. Never lift and swing the backpack while twisting at the same time.

Bulldogs fight till the end, North prevails

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – St. Charles North tussled with Batavia throughout Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls volleyball opener.

Double-digit leads? Forget about them.

Peace of mind? Not until the final point dropped.

North may have maintained its hot start with a 25-23, 25-21 sweep, but not before exhaling first. And then quickly moving on.

“We’re always training to be ready for that next match,” North Stars middle blocker Emily Carroll said. “Even though we’re 10-0, we never settle. It’s not good enough for us. We always try to be better, and better ourselves for the next match.”

Batavia (5-5, 0-1 UEC River) served aggressively and kept North out of sync for much of the night, a rarity for the North Stars (10-0, 1-0) to date.

“That was our goal,” Bull-

Emily Carroll, North Starts middle blocker dogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne said, “but sometimes out of system is not a good thing, because Taylor Krage can hit in the back row.”

Krage, the North Stars’ Northern Illinois-bound senior outside hitter, smacked a match-high nine kills, including one to seal Game 1. Sophia DuVall (five kills) and Daley Krage (four) were next.

Audrey Faulhaber (nine digs), Maddie Jaudon (eight) and Heather Meyer (eight) challenged North’s hitters, helping Batavia lead as late as 23-22 in the first game and 1816 in the second.

Ultimately, North persevered with a focus that has wowed coach Lindsey Hawkins since summer workouts,

when players pledged their accountability to each other and to making the most of an experienced, talented core.

“We have a lot of girls that stay calm,” Taylor Krage said.

“We don’t really freak out on the court, and we kind of just keep playing volleyball no matter what.”

Of course, part of playing volleyball entails what some bystanders would consider “freaking out.” At least after big points.

A pregame announcement warned a boisterous “Pack The Place” crowd against the use of artificial noisemakers.

Naturally, it didn’t apply to the North Stars or Bulldogs.

Eventually, North used that encouragement to its ad-

vantage at the net, as Claire Anderson, Jaclyn Taylor, Carroll and DuVall stood up to a Batavia attack led by Meyer (eight kills) and Shea Stanley (six).

“Honestly, just being loud and cheering each other on just motivates everyone to get that block,” Carroll said.

Sydney Wohlert had 15 assists for North, while Audrey Faulhaber had 22 for Batavia.

The Bulldogs host defending 4A state champion Benet on Thursday. Batavia counts losses to 3A champ St. Francis and perennial power Providence, as well, and hopes the North result will continue its bid to be a force down the stretch.

“Our schedule, we play that tough schedule to get ready for games like this, and we stayed in there with them, but I thought that we could have done even a little better tonight,” Trippi-Payne said. “What can you do, right?

They’re a good team.”

On the USTA tournament circuit, Koenen is longtime doubles partners with Davis Crocker, of Kalamazoo, Mich.

Crocker has committed to play college tennis at the University of Michigan.

“He’s pretty excited for me and ready to be rivals [in the Big Ten], but we will still be playing doubles this year in all the tournaments leading up to college,” Koenen said.

More STC commitments: A pair of other St. Charles athletes recently made Division I college commitments.

Mike Novotny, a senior goalkeeper for the St. Charles East boys soccer team, committed to Eastern Illinois, he announced Monday on his Twitter page. The announcement came just a couple hours after Novotny turned in an impressive performance in goal as the Saints blanked Wheaton Academy, 2-0.

A couple days earlier, St. Charles North girls soccer’s Ashlyn Walter decided on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Walter, a senior forward, was among the top scoring threats for the Upstate Eight Conference River champion North Stars in the spring.

Shuttle run: St. Charles East will offer overflow parking for Friday night’s home football game against St. Charles North in the Sears section of the Charlestowne Mall, East announced Tuesday.

East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said a shuttle between Charlestowne and the school will run between 6 and 10 p.m. Friday.

Jasper Koenen’s planned career in hospitality management could make travel a centerpiece of his professional life, but for now, the St. Charles East senior is happy to scale back on his road-tripping.

Koenen made the first of five scheduled college official visits over the weekend to Michigan State, then promptly nixed his plans for the other four after committing to the Spartans’ men’s tennis program on Sunday night.

Koenen, who finished fourth in the IHSA State Tournament singles draw as a junior, Jasper Koenen said Michigan State’s hospitality management program set the school apart from some of the other Big Ten and SEC programs he was considering.

“There’s a Dutch guy on the team and so with me being Dutch, that was really cool, and then Friday I got a presentation from the adviser of the hospitality management department, and she just blew me away,” Koenen said. “Even the coach said it was one of the best presentations he had ever seen.”

Koenen becomes the third member of his immediate family who will play Division I college tennis, following older sisters Annemijn (Arkansas and Missouri) and Liselot, who recently transferred from Houston to Georgetown.

Considering how busy he is this school year – Koenen is president of East’s student council – freeing up a few weekends by finalizing his college decision was a welcome development.

The powerful Koenen said he was able to build off the momentum of his surprise run to the IHSA state semifinal round in the spring in the months that followed.

“I had a great summer,” Koenen said. “I had some wins against players I’d never beaten before, had some really good tournaments, and I was really glad how after high school tennis my tennis just

AURORA – Flynn Collins and Conor Morton are two formidable talents on an individual level.

Now that Marmion’s premier scoring threats are learning to play off one another, the Cadets could be in business.

That’s how Tuesday’s Suburban Christian Conference match against St. Francis unfolded as Collins and Morton tag-teamed each of the first three goals in the Cadets’ 4-0 win at Fichtel Field.

“Last year we were kind of getting used to each other because he was a fresh- Conor Morton man and I was a junior,” said Collins, of Batavia. “But this year since I have the seniority now, I’m a senior, he’s a sophomore, we kind of play off each other’s strengths. I’m fast, he’s big. It works out great.”

Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro loved what he saw from the duo Tuesday.

“That’s what we were hoping for since the beginning of the season,” Del Toro said.

“Them two partnering up together are going to be very strong for us. So hopefully that continues, and once we start getting into the playoffs, they’re clicking.”

With the match scoreless late in the first half, Morton played a long feed up to Collins, whose shot was stopped

by St. Francis goalkeeper Jonathan Burke. Morton, though, gathered the rebound, made a move to free a shooting lane and placed the ball just to Burke’s left, inside the post for a 1-0 Marmion lead.

The 6-foot-3 Morton, who didn’t start after spraining his right MCL during the recent Barrington Invitational, finished the night with two goals and an assist.

“I didn’t know it would be a good game,” Morton said, referencing his recent injury.

“I just thought I’d be able to

get on the field and get some touches. The knee brace I have is really helpful. It’s very strong.”

Morton said his favorite play of the night was a volley he played over the top to set up Collins’ breakaway for Marmion’s second goal less than three minutes into the second half.

Midway through the half, Collins beat a defender before playing a low cross through the goalmouth that Morton poked in for a 3-0 Cadets advantage.

Junior Gavin Sanchez closed the scoring for Marmion (3-3-1, 1-0 SCC) with a late penalty kick goal.

The offensive outburst was appreciated by Del Toro, but he was especially heartened by his team’s third straight shutout after conceding 11 goals in the first four matches of the season.

“We worked hard in practice,” Del Toro said. “It was a lot of deep talk, strong talk, talking with the boys. And it worked. … Now we’re starting to realize the team that we have is pretty strong, so hopefully we start clicking.”

St. Francis (1-4-2, 0-1) graduated 13 seniors from last year and is trying to find its identity, coach Kristin Keigley said. Junior Christopher Connelly and sophomore Nicholas Roehl each had solid shots on goal against Cadets goalkeeper Matt Fletcher (seven saves).

“Our results aren’t what we’re capable of simply because we’ve been continually playing around with different lineups, putting people in different positions, trying to find the right combinations,” Keigley said. “So the record that we hold right now is nowhere near representative of what we can do.

“This is more representative of what we can do where we can keep a 3A team that is a very, very good team scoreless until the last five minutes of a half.”

The match was originally scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start but was moved to 7 because of Tuesday’s intense heat.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HARVARD – Stefan Jochum and Alan Camarena scored in the final 13:34 Tuesday to key the Burlington Central boys soccer team’s 2-1 victory at Harvard.

BC (6-1, 3-0 Big Northern East) extended its winning streak to four.

“It was definitely a nail-biter at the end and a pretty hard-fought match,” Rockets coach Mike Gecan said. “Pretty exciting. Everybody was pretty pumped up.”

Central trailed for much of the match, falling behind, 1-0, when Harvard converted a first-half goal on a breakaway. Things picked up considerably down the stretch, however, as Jochum scored the equalizer shortly after a Matt O’Connor corner kick.

Just more than nine minutes later, Camarena darted inside with an AJ Gouriotis feed and shot for the near post, scoring the eventual winner with 4:12 to play.

Goalkeeper Brett Rau made eight saves for Central.

“Three of them were not good, but amazing saves,” Gecan said. “We call them super saves.”

By VINNIE DUBER sports@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – For the second year in a row, the crosstown rivalry between the girls tennis teams of St. Charles East and St. Charles North was dominated by the Saints.

But the North Stars made it a bit closer this time.

The Saints rolled again Tuesday at East, winning 6-1 a year after a 7-0 shutout. But make no mistake, the singles matches were tight, with two of three going three sets.

Unfortunately for the North Stars, the doubles matches were anything but, and what East recognizes as the strength of its team won all four matches in dominating fashion.

East’s four doubles teams won a collective 48 of 58 games, with the No. 2 squad of twin sisters Carly and Alexa Huskisson winning both sets by scores of 6-0.

“It’s been going well so far,” Carly Huskisson said. “We haven’t lost yet. We’re just trying to get better and hopefully improve.”

The doubles domination

wrapped up Tuesday’s match for East before any of the singles matches had finished. The Saints know it’s the strength of their team, and they have high hopes going forward.

“We have a really strong doubles lineup this year throughout the whole team,” said senior Haydyn Jones, ne half of East’s top doubles team alongside Kelsie Roberton.

“So that’ll be exciting when it comes late in the season, especially closer to conference.

This is a really big match for us today.

“We are very aware of our potential this year, and we have high goals. We really hope to do well at conference this year because we have every reason to. This is one of our strongest teams in a long time, and we’re excited about what’s going to come.”

East ended up taking both the singles matches that went to three sets, but North grabbed the other, thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 win from senior Kaity Wolfe over East’s Sam Maze at No. 3 singles.

“It was super intense,” Wolfe said. “We had deuce

a lot of the time. I just tried to keep my head in it and get every ball in. I had to hang in there a lot. It was hard. ... It felt really good. It’s nice to know that I won after all that work.”

Sarah Church (No. 1 singles) and Jaci Spoerl (No. 2 singles) both won in three sets for East.

The East win keeps its record perfect at 5-0 (2-0 in conference), while North was sent to 4-1 (1-1 in conference) with the loss. The Saints have plenty more they hope to accomplish this season, and a big win over the rival North Stars is just another checkmark along the way.

“Because they’re almost all seniors, they really want this to be a special season,” East coach Sena Drawer said.

“We want to win conference. ...

And sectional, I think we have a good shot at that, but more importantly I’d like to take two doubles teams to state, my one and two, and hopefully [No. 1 singles player] Sarah [Church].

“And if we can do that, life is really good.”

Rosary 3, Marian Central 2: At Woodstock, Rosary (53, 2-0 Suburban Christian Conference) used a doubles sweep to win the dual. Maddy Deufel and Sydney Zaragoza were 7-5, 6-2 winners at third doubles.

St. Francis 5, Walther Lutheran 0: At Melrose Park, St. Francis yielded just one game in the SCC dual. The Spartans’ Ava Kolman won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.

GIRLS SWIMMING St. Charles East 99, Wheaton North 79: At St. Charles, Stephanie Garvin enjoyed a big season opener for East, winning the 100-yard freestyle (54.61) and 200 freestyle (1:57.61). How was your offseason training program?

My training went really well.

It was really good. It was pretty similar to the past. We had a new coach this year [Mike Backer], but we pretty much were on the same schedule as usual, so that was nice.

DeKALB – The weekend trip out west will be an odd experience for the Northern Illinois football team.

For starters, the Huskies have a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Rockford out to Lewiston, Idaho. Then it’s a 40-minute drive up to Moscow, where the Huskies will hold their walkthrough at the Kibbie Dome on Friday.

After their walkthrough, it’s

another one hour, 45 minute drive to the team hotel in Spokane, Wash.

Moscow, located in “The Palouse” area along the Idaho-Washington border, is a small town. Pullman, Wash., home of Washington State, is less than 10 miles away, and the Cougars host Southern Utah the same day.

With games at both the Kibbie Dome and WSU’s Martin Stadium, there’s even less hotel availability in the area than usual.

Spokane is the closest decent-sized city, and the Huskies will stay there Friday night, making the long bus trip again Saturday morning.

“The longest [bus ride] I remember is like 45 minutes on game day,” NIU linebacker Michael Santacaterina, of Geneva, said during Tuesday’s weekly news conference. “It’s something we’re going to prepare for. We’re just going to have to handle it the right way and be mentally tough about it.”

She covered the Saints’ home course in 18:17 en route to earning a nod as the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week.

Scull caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about her race and the season ahead. The following is an edited transcript:

Veteran St. Charles North girls coach Chris Patrick presided over a milestone Monday when the North Stars shot 156 as a team at Cantigny in Wheaton.

The North Stars’ 88-stroke margin of victory against St. Francis almost was lost in the shuffle of the best dual meet score North has carded in Patrick’s 11 seasons.

Senior Jessica Grill’s personal-best 37 led the way, but three newcomers weren’t far off. Sycamore transfer Carly Hudon (39) was next, while freshmen Kate Lillie and Gianna Furrie followed with separate 40s at the well-kept course.

“All the girls are starting to see their potential and know what they’re capable of the rest of the year,” Patrick said.

“The freshmen, they’re both experienced players and the team concept is new to them, but they’re both good players and course managers who have been very solid mentally as well as with hitting shots.”

Grill, a senior, merited the same praise from Patrick years ago. A veteran of summer junior tournaments with her fraternal twin brother, JT, Grill has continued her development, which went a long way toward Monday’s low number.

“She shot 39 a couple of times, but at this course she was hitting greens, fairways and putted very well and was very consistent,” Patrick said.

Multiply that by four and, in this equation, you get 156.

What changes in style did you make to accommodate female readers?

JL: This is such a perilous question!

And of course what was true in publishing for a gay audience 13 years ago isn’t necessarily relevant now.

For me the crucial difference was that M/M was by definition romance fiction, and so the emphasis had to be on the relationship and the romance.

The first story I wrote for the M/M market was “The Dark Horse,” and there is a fair bit of explicit but yet romanticized sex, a lot of emphasis and exploration about feelings and emotions.

There’s a little bit of a mystery, but it’s mostly backdrop. Whereas with “Fatal Shadows,” the emphasis was on the mystery and about the sexual identity of the two main characters.

So, we had Adrien English who, though gay, was a protagonist that straight readers could easily relate to – that was important to me – and we

passing visual reading mediums. I think it will always be supplemental to the written experience. But I also see the market for audio growing steadily.

I think more and more readers will discover what a delight audio can be – how much it can enhance their enjoyment, especially of favorite stories.

It’s a way of experiencing the work almost as though for the first time, and that’s really a lot of fun.

DK: How do you view Josh Lanyon the author vs. Josh Lanyon the person?

JL: Ha! Well, as I’m sure you yourself know, we try to be our witty, smartest, personable selves when we’re online.

Social media is a stage, and we’re on that stage trying to sell our author brand.

But off stage, I’m your typical writerly type. I’m quiet, introspective and largely preoccupied with the voices in my head.

I’m impatient with interruptions and I’m often oblivious to what’s going on around me. But I will say that I’ve learned two important lessons along the way.

To be of any use as a writer, you have to have something to write about.

That means getting out in the real world and interacting with real people.

And, most important, we are defined by our relationships with others.

As much as I want my work to last and be remembered, being there for the people I love and who love me, must always come first.

Time is fleeting and second chances are rare.

Mom’s cellphone video has consequences Dear Abby: My 13-year-old son, “Wiley,” was playing a game on my cellphone. I stupidly forgot to delete a short video of myself engaged in a sex act with my ex-husband, “Cliff.” Wiley didn’t confront me or mention it, but given his sudden change in behavior, I’m almost certain he saw it.

The next morning I mentioned it and apologized, hoping we could get past the awkwardness, but Wiley wouldn’t admit this is what’s bothering him. He acted as if he didn’t know what I was talking about. Now he’s shutting down. He won’t talk to me. He’s off in his own world as if I’m a stranger, where a few days before we would laugh, share and trust each other.

Mitral valve prolapse rarely requires treatment Dear Doctor K: I have mitral valve prolapse. What does this mean? And why don’t I need treatment for it?

Dear Reader: The heart is made up of four chambers. Normally, the upper two chambers (the atria) fill with blood, then pump blood into the lower two chambers (the ventricles). Next, the ventricles pump blood to the rest of the body.

The mitral valve is the physical doorway between the heart’s left atrium and left ventricle. The valve has two leaflets.

When it’s working properly, the mitral valve opens to let blood flow “forward” – from the left atrium down into the left ventricle. The two leaflets drop down into the left ventricle. But when the left ventricle then pumps the blood out to the body, the mitral valve closes, to prevent blood from flowing “backward” up into the left atrium. The two leaflets are directly between the left atrium and left ventricle.

In mitral valve prolapse, however, a slight deformity of the mitral valve prevents the valve from closing normally. This appears as an abnormal floppiness, or prolapse, of the valve. When the left ventricle pumps, the two leaflets

The result is that small amounts of blood leak back into the left atrium. It sounds serious, but in most people it actually has very little effect on the heart’s overall ability to pump blood.

In some people, however, the leak worsens to create a significant backward flow of blood into the left atrium. This is called mitral regurgitation. People with severe mitral regurgitation can develop shortness of breath, fatigue and leg swelling.

Mitral valve prolapse is a lifelong condition, but most people who have it never have symptoms.

The condition is discovered only when a doctor hears a certain clicking sound during a routine physical examination. This abnormal heart sound is related to the malfunction of the mitral valve.

If you have mitral valve prolapse but do not have any symp-

toms, you will not need treatment.

In the past, doctors recommended that people with mitral valve prolapse take antibiotics prior to certain surgical procedures and dental appointments, but the American Heart Association no longer recommends this.

If mitral valve prolapse develops into severe mitral regurgitation, you may need to have the abnormal mitral valve surgically repaired or replaced.

Mitral valve prolapse has almost surely been present in human beings for tens of thousands of years, but we discovered it only about 50 years ago. Initially, doctors worried that it was a serious, even life-threatening, condition. However, as has been true of many newly discovered conditions and diseases, we first recognize it in the people who have the most severe forms of it.

As we find out more about it, we learn that many people with the condition have nothing to worry about.

I was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day when I met my boyfriend two years ago. I stopped smoking then because my boyfriend is a non-smoker, and he asked me to please strop smoking, and I did. It was a difficult task, but with his help, I succeeded and we are both very happy now.

I am well aware that smoking can cause serious health problems, especially lung cancer.

But I have an aunt who has a serious case of lung cancer, but she nor any of her family has ever smoked. How could she have serious lung cancer if cigarette smoke did not cause it? – Rachael, Cleveland, Ohio Dear Rachael: It is possible for a person who had never been subjected to cigarette smoke to be a lung cancer victim, but the odds are much higher for smoke victims. According to the American Cancer Society, if every person on earth stopped using tobacco products, 83 percent of cases of lung cancer would eventually be eliminated.

Of course, this is not going to happen, mainly because of tobacco’s powerful addictive qualities. The anti-smoking campaign in our country is paying dividends, however. The use of tobacco products is declining steadily here. Thanks to its efforts, the United States and Canada have a relatively low percentage of smokers. Poland, Greece, Ireland, Japan and Turkey are the unfortunate leaders.

Dear Becky: You are certainly old enough and mature enough to choose what you read. And, in fact, reading about people of different cultures or religions is an excellent way to become more understanding of our diversities in this country.

Since you are reading the Book of Mormon, it might be a good idea to offer Levi literature on your Catholic religion so you both will be able to discuss both religions intelligently.

Knowing your parents’ sensibilities, I wouldn’t flaunt the Book of Mormon at them or read it in their presence.

In a lot of families, unfortunately, religion is a volatile topic.

Bridge players take great pleasure in making a contract after correctly anticipating trouble in the form of unfavorable distribution. In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the spade ace and continues with the spade queen. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

North’s takeout double was flexible, unlike a two-club overcall. Also, note South’s jump to four hearts. This showed a relatively weak hand with a lot of hearts. With a very strong hand, South would have started with a two-diamond cue-bid.

South hopes to take five hearts and five clubs. But he must realize that he might first concede one spade, one heart and two diamonds. However, he can lose two diamonds only if East gains the lead. Declarer must work to stop East from winning a trick.

So, at trick three, when South leads a low heart from his hand, he should anticipate West’s playing the king. And if he does, South must go low from the dummy, letting West take the trick. Then everything is under control.

Finally, if you would have bid (a very risky) one spade with that East hand over North’s double, you would have reached four spades, which cannot be defeated. Also, if West doubles over four hearts, East might advance to four spades. (Rebidding four spades over four hearts is debatable, being less flexible than doubling.) Once again, bridge is a bidder’s game.

School picture day has come a long way KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – The stage area in the multipurpose room at John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn was turned into a photo studio of sorts last week, with three photographers from Lifetouch set up for the school’s picture day.

The process runs like a machine. Students march in three lines, with their paperwork all filled out. That paperwork tells photographers what color the background should be and how the students should pose. And, the photographers will check the images to make sure they are correct.

It’s all come a long way since I was in elementary school, when it all was much more imprecise. It’s how I once had school pictures in which my eyes were closed.

That would not happen today.

My daughters, who attend John Stewart, never have had anything less than absolute perfection in their school pictures. And last week, Lifetouch photographer Penny Zimmerman allowed me to watch it all in action, how scanning the order form tells her everything she needs to know, and how she knows it’s all been accomplished before each student is done.

Zimmerman would do a little coaching, urging kids to smile and relax, “shake it out” or “sit up nice and straight.”

It allows her to deliver “exactly what they want,” she said. Zimmerman, who has been doing this for 13 years, started with film but said digital is “much better.”

So, the process has been perfected, but sometimes, the hair gets in the way. That’s why I feel for Edgar Vasquez, the fifth-grader whose picture appears on today’s cover photo. Photographer Sandy Bressner described how Edgar, dressed so nicely in a short-sleeved shirt and a tie, kept struggling to get his hair just right. He was so determined to get just the right look – and tame a stubborn cowlick – that those who receive Edgar’s photos should know just how hard he worked

to get that perfect look.

Edgar was one of the sharp-dressed young men, and there were plenty of welldressed young ladies as well.

Not all were so elegant, but the room really was a sea of plaid dress shirts for boys and dressy tops, skirts and dresses for the girls. Fifth-grader Will Borucki stood in line, dressed in a blue-and-black plaid shirt and said, yes, he was dressed for picture day. And, he said, it’s a big deal, and he looks forward to seeing the pictures afterward.

Everyone gets a picture, regardless of whether the student is ordering one.

Teachers also will pose, and there are “class photos” in which pictures of everyone

in each classroom will be included. And it’s a full day for the crew. LaShawn Williams of Lifetouch was in the front area, helping to keep the kids in their line and keeping the lines moving. The day before, she said, the crew was at a school in Bensenville. The next day, crew members would be at Clarendon Hills.

And the scene is similar for the crew at each stop, but that’s OK. Zimmerman said it’s rewarding.

“I don’t think I could do anything else but this,” Zimmerman said.

In speaking with her students they commented that they “have an awesome classroom.” They reported that Mrs. James is really fun and funny. Adam, a second grader in Mrs. James class, said that “we learn new things like even/odd and the reading CAFE.”

Class, 5th grade Mrs. Schroeder’s Shields

This year one of our focuses at John Shields is to meet or exceed grade level writing indicators in multiple genres. As a teacher I find it imperative that students are excited about writing from the start of the year. Part of our workshop in 5th grade is to set up our writer’s notebook. Their notebook is a place for them to write free-choice topics as well as assigned writing. As I researched different techniques to help students generate ideas for their notebooks I came across a fantastic lesson! As a class we discussed how comics, interviews, poems, plays, song lyrics, and graphic novels are all writing genres. The “AlphaBoxes” lesson allowed the students to brainstorm different genres for each letter of the alphabet. After students drafted each letter with a writing genre they made boxes in their notebooks and entered their ideas into each box including illustrations. Students end with an entire list of genres in their notebooks that they can extend on during sacred writing time.

“I didn’t know we could write “those” types of things in writing class”, said one student.

Students are working diligently and I look forward to seeing all of their ideas come to life!
