New Charlestowne Mall plans unveiled

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Changes to Charlestowne Mall could begin as early as the start of construction season next year, members of the pending new ownership team said Monday during the St. Charles Planning and Development Committee meeting.

Project Director Chuck May said The Krausz Companies Inc. wants to create an environment that people of all ages can enjoy for shopping, dining, entertainment and socializing.

The target completion date is late summer to early fall 2015, he said.

“Instead of one big monster building, it looks like several different buildings,” said David Pyle, an executive vice president with The Krausz Companies.

Plans also include making the mall more visible from Route 64, adding retail and restaurants closer to Route 64 and removing some of the mall, including the former Sears building, May and Pyle said.

“It is unusual to downsize, but what is important in a successful retail project is that it be the right size,” May said.

“This mall was never, never fully leased.”

He expects the mall to have about 80 stores and aims for an occupancy rate in the 90 percentile, he said.

Pyle, who said retailers will be able to stay open during construction, said the carousel will also go.

Aldermen and residents alike seemed encouraged by the plans.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin said he had been concerned a developer would demolish the mall and turn the property into a mixed-use space.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com WASCO – Residents with concerns about some schools’ lack of air conditioning, as well as those with comments about the recent Richmond-Davis merger case ruling, addressed the St. Charles School District 303 board meeting Monday evening.

Due to the heat, administrators closed Corron, Norton Creek and Wild Rose elementary schools today, and Thompson and Haines middle schools have early dismissals.

Shaun Varghese spoke about the issue, stating that a lack of air conditioning jeopardizes the health and safety of students, noting that it is no longer considered a luxury, but a necessity.

Another parent of Corron students, Brook Silvestri, said he had concerns about how the heat affects his child’s asthma. He said breathing in those conditions is “like trying to breathe through a straw.”

mann said the board intends to create a plan to install air conditioning in January, when it has a better idea of what its financial picture will be.

Others shared comments about the Richmond-Davis case ruling, which challenged the legality of reconfiguring Davis and Richmond elementary schools into schools serving grades K-2 and 3-5, respectively.

Parents, who filed the lawsuit in 2011, alleged the district circumvented No Child Left Behind regulations when it did so. A judge ruled in favor of the parents.

Charlotte Norgaard said the ruling should make her happy, but instead it made her angry.

“The fact that it took a court order for you to finally

come up with a new plan is infuriating,” she said.

Board member Edward McNally asked board members to “stop trying to manipulate the data from our own website to say that the situation is more palpable than it is, admit the failure and quit trying to prevent other board members from speaking to the press, stop defending the superintendent when he clearly acted improperly, pedagogically and legally.”

McNally also asked that the board discuss its plans at the next meeting, but Schlomann said the matter is still in the court’s hands with a status hearing coming Wednesday.

“I think it is inappropriate at this time without one, talking to legal counsel, and two, waiting until the judge has completed it,” he said.

Resident Kim Malay said she shared the plans with the Near West Neighborhood Association, most of whom couldn’t be at Monday’s meeting.

“They wanted to share with you they are thrilled to see this plan, as am I,” she said. “This is the vision we need for St. Charles.”

Although it was too early for the new ownership to talk about financing, they did say the estimated budget is more than $70 million.

“We’ve got a lot of fine-tuning to do,” May said.

The project is next expected to come before the St. Charles Plan Commission in October.

St. Charles to host music festival this weekend

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Those attending the second annual St. Charles Jazz Weekend will have even more opportunities to listen to jazz than last year’s event.

The number of venues participating in the event, which kicks off Thursday and runs through Sunday, has grown from four to eight.

St. Charles Jazz Weekend is put on by the St. Charles Downtown Partnership, and the Kane County Chronicle is a premier media sponsor of the event.

“We had a really good reception from the four venues that participated last year,” said Scott Piner, marketing and development manager for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership. “The original intent was to bring more people downtown who could go out and enjoy jazz in different restaurants in the downtown.

“There is a lot of great entertainment and great music that is already a part of the fabric of the downtown.”

The St. Charles Jazz Weekend is being put on in association with the St. Charles Arts Council All-City, AllArts Event – Charlie’s Center for the Arts – All Of The Arts, All Over Town. It will encompass venues all over St. Charles that will feature visual art galleries/studios, music, literature and arts programming.

One of the featured artists in the St. Charles Jazz Weekend is Chicago-born and Grammy award winning saxophonist Frank Catalano, who was a member of the Elgin Community College Jazz Band while in high school.

“He brings a lot of credibility to the quality of the jazz musicians,” Piner said.

Catalano, 36, said his experience in the Elgin Community College Jazz Band helped him to grow as a musician.

“It really made me hone my skills,” he said.

Restaurants aren’t the only venues getting into the act. Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, at 307 Cedar Ave. in St. Charles, coincidentally kicked off its new jazz worship service Sunday, and it will be having another service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday during St. Charles Jazz Weekend.

“I think we were looking for something different to offer the community,” said Jeff Hunt, the church’s director of music.

Hunt went to a couple of services at a church in Chicago where jazz is also incorporated into the worship service.

“Jazz is so soulful,” Hunt said. “Jazz has a real soulful spirit to it. If people are in the mood for a whole jazz weekend, they might want to consider coming in here.”

Neighbor’s quest: Get weeds cut down to size

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Of all the tall weeds growing in the lot next door to Roy Harmon’s house on Kaneville Road, the Queen Anne’s lace was probably the tallest, at three feet.

The clumps of shepherd’s purse, plantains, prickly thistle, clover, foxtail and other weeds were all at different heights, ranging from 10 to 20 inches, all over the one-acre lot.

But what had Harmon, 80, all ticked off was that the weeds needed cutting and it took 68 days from his first contact with Geneva officials to get action, after contact with the property’s owner yielded no results, according to those involved.

Harmon repeatedly sent emails to code enforcement, his aldermen and the mayor to get something done, those involved said.

According to city ordinance, weeds, grass or plants – that are not ornamental – are not allowed to be taller than eight inches anywhere in Geneva.

“For 10 years, we have lived with the vacant lot adjacent to our property going to seed – dandelions in the spring, thistles in the fall,” Harmon wrote

Kevin Stahr, a spokesman for the city, said the weeds went

uncut because the lawn care contractor was out of town.

The weeds were cut as of Sept. 4, Harmon said.

For his part, property owner Jack Burgess said Harmon complains too much.

“It’s mowed as often as it has to be,” Burgess said of the vacant lot. “I talked with the fellow who takes care of it, and he tells me I have no problems.

I talked to the city last week.

It’s been taken care of.”

The lot at 2100 was big news in January 2003, when the homeowner who lived there, Jean Bills, 73, was found frozen to death in her garage. As much of the house’s interior was falling down, including a hole in the roof, the house was razed.

Burgess bought the lot in November that year for $202,700 property records show.

Burgess said his wife intended to build a house there but after she became ill with cancer, and then died, they did not build after all.

The lot is listed for sale at $350,000 said Burgess’ real estate agent, Stephen Lane.

“Where do you get an acre of land with city water and sewer for that price?” Lane said. “It’s one of the best 11 single-family lots for sale in Geneva at one of the best prices.”

As far as Harmon is concerned, he will keep an eye on the weeds.

“It seems that it has been very difficult for the code enforcement officer to pay much attention to the lot,” Harmon said in an email. “So it will be my plan to re-measure about once a week and to e-mail him when the average is clearly eight inches.”

Heat prompts school cancellations in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The forecasted heat has prompted St. Charles School District 303 to cancel classes for three elementary schools and to dismiss two middle schools early today.

None of the five buildings – Corron, Norton Creek and Wild Rose elementary schools and Haines and Thompson middle schools – are fully air conditioned, district spokesperson Jim Blaney said.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high near 94 degrees today.

Monday, the National Weather Service indicated temperatures in St. Charles

had reached 90 degrees. The low Monday night was expected to be around 73 degrees.

That heat and humidity at night is a problem, Blaney said.

“The buildings don’t cool down at night,” he said.

Students at Haines and

Thompson will attend their core classes in the morning and be dismissed at noon, Blaney said. All after-school activities will be canceled, he said.

Outdoor after-school activities at Wredling Middle School, which has a normal school day, also will be can-

celed, but indoor after-school activities will be held as planned, Blaney said.

He said the district was using an automated phone system to notify parents of the cancellations and shortened days.

Last year, District 303 began a multiyear capital

improvement plan to get all of its elementary schools equipped with air conditioning. St. Charles Education Association President Pam Turriff asked school board members last month to expedite those plans and to also extend those improvements to Thompson and Haines.

Geneva man announces run for County Board

Martin, 65, said he plans to seek the office to be vacated by current board member Michael Donahue in the Nov. 4, 2014, general election. Donahue has said he will not seek another term.

“When I became aware a position would be open, I thought it would be a decent thing to do for myself and the community and serve for four years,” Martin said.

The school board will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva police, with help from Batavia police and Kane County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, caught a man suspected of burglarizing cars parked at the train depot.

Scott M. Francis, 21, of the 2700 block of Chatham Court, Geneva, was charged with two counts of felony burglary. He was released on $500 bond, or 10 percent of $5,000 bail and is to appear in court Wednesday.

The felonies carry a penalty of three to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000 for each, if convicted.

According to reports, police were notified of a man

Police eventually found Francis in the backyard of a house on the 700 block of Shady Avenue. They found items missing from two cars that had broken windows in the backyard of another house on the 300 block of Cheever Avenue, reports state.

Items taken were a global positioning device, binoculars with a leather case and a multi-tool device, according to reports. Cars with broken windows were a 2010 Subaru Legacy and a 2001 Honda CRV. Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said police still are sorting out the items found with what was reported missing from the vehicles.

She moved to Albany, Ga., three years ago, moving from Augusta, Ga., where she had retired from The Medical College of Georgia as the office manager for the Office of the Chairman. She was of the Methodist faith.

“Carole was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. All who met her enjoyed her kindness and thoughtfulness, and appreciated her sense of humor.

Carole loved flowers, decorating, reading, puzzles, chocolate, HGTV, and music – and Carole was surely one of the most organized people to have ever graced the earth. She will be surely missed, but has left her loved ones a legacy of family, laughter, fun and joy.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Grace Eckblade; the father of her children, Charles Clark; and brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Arlen Isbell.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Carol Clark was sitting on the back porch of her house on the 600 block of McKinley Avenue when she heard a crash.

A 23-year-old man who belongs to a soccer team living across the street backed a cargo van out of the driveway and according to the crash report, his sandal got stuck under the brake. The van rolled into the street and rear-ended the front of her house.

It happened shortly before 6 p.m. Sept. 2 and left the 70-year-old widow reeling and shaking.

“I thought my tree had split in two and fallen on my house,” Clark said. “My whole foundation is compromised, it’s moved about three inches. The siding is ruined. ... The sill plate is cracked in half. They’re going to have to have the living room wall completely torn out, the basement wall completely torn out.”

From the outside of the house, the extent of the damage is not apparent, Clark said, but there is plenty inside, including cracked and broken plaster everywhere.

Clark said she still is waiting to hear final details from an insurance adjuster.

“I’m just overwhelmed,” Clark said. “My whole sense of well being is gone.”

Police ticketed the driver, Prince M. Lapnet, 23, of the 600 block of McKinley Avenue, for driving without a

valid driver’s license. He is scheduled to appear in traffic court Oct. 15.

Lapnet said he did not want to comment about the crash.

Though the crash report lists Bret Hall as the owner of the a 2011 Ford Econoline 350, Hall said the vehicle belongs to a nonprofit, Bridges FC, which trains soccer players from around the world.

Hall said Lapnet did not have permission to move the Econoline.

“It was a dumb mistake,” Hall said. “I apologized. He should not have been touching that van. The vehicle was moving 5 miles an hour and anything broken, we have to take care of. The insurance company will do what is right. We have $2 million in insurance.”

Clark said another aspect of the crash that still has her upset is that an hour and a half before the van hit her house, she had been sitting with an 8-month-old grandbaby.

“The paperweight in the window sill flew and shattered the glass coffee table right where I had been sitting with my granddaughter in my arms,” Clark said. “I have not cried yet, but I’m coming real close.”

Hall said as a grandfather himself, he understand how upset Clark is, but he is grateful no one was hurt.

“I feel terrible that she is upset,” Hall said. “She’s shook up and rightfully so.

Thank God nothing else was done.”

Elburn teen runs into car while on skateboard

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A 15-year-old Elburn girl was injured Saturday night after she ran into the side of a car while skateboarding, Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said.

She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and had left the intensive care unit and was listed as stable, according to a hospital official.

The incident took place just after 7 p.m. Saturday. The girl was skateboarding south in the 800 block of Ridge Drive and was approaching the intersection with Prairie Valley Street. Smith said the girl was traveling at a high rate of speed and could not stop, and she hit the side of a car that was traveling on Prairie Valley.

“She had quite a bit of speed,” Smith said. “She was unable to stop and ran into the side of a car. The car was going very slowly. The car did not hit her. … It was not the car driver’s fault, and there were no tickets issued.”

Smith said he did not know whether the girl was wearing protective gear.

The incident took place a few months after a similar one in which 13-year-old Caitlyn Phillips died after she collided with a car while inline skating. That took place in April.

“There are similarities to it, but every crash is different in some aspect,” Smith said.

“It was a teenage girl. But it was a skateboard instead of inline skates. … This was very fortunate in that there were just injuries, however serious they are.”

Food, wine draw crowds to Festival of the Vine

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Standing with her dog – a Bernese mountain dog named Quinn – Batavia resident Claudia Curtis on Sunday didn’t hesitate when asked why she returns to the Festival of the Vine every year.

“The food,” she said, noting she comes for such sweets as caramel corn, gelato and chocolate. “It’s an excuse to eat junk food.”

But the 32nd annual Festival of the Vine offered attendees more than food and wine.

The three-day Geneva festival featured live music, a craft show, trolley rides and children’s activities.

And, new this year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank gave attendees a chance to volunteer.

The organization received 1 million pounds of pumpkin pie filling that need to be relabeled, so it brought pallets of the 1-pound cans to Festival of the Vine, said Tiffany King, the food bank’s development officer of special events.

“It was a constant crowd, for sure,” she said, noting a large group remained when the live music ended Saturday night. “Another successful Festival of the Vine for Geneva and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.”

With 22 local restaurants and eateries participating in the Flavor Fare at West State and North Fourth streets, attendees Sunday had dozens of lunchtime options, including fish tacos, garlic crab pasta, black bean soup, shrimp and grits and, among other foods, Italian sausage with peppers.

Susan Rizzo of Wheaton and her 8-year-old son, Sam, said they liked sampling food from a variety of restaurants all at once.

Sam was trying a ricotta stuffed meatball from Riganato Old World Grille.

“Dad’s out there getting the next wave,” Susan Rizzo said.

“These are all really great restaurants, so it’s fun getting them all at once.”

Getting back to work THE WASHINGTON POST There wasn’t much good news in Friday’s monthly labor market report from the U.S. government.

Even what seems encouraging – a continuation in August of the slow downward trend in the unemployment rate, to 7.3 percent – actually gets worrying on close inspection.

This superficially positive figure reflects the fact that the number of people 16 years old or older seeking work fell by 312,000, while the nation’s employers only hired 169,000 full- or part-time workers. That means only 63.2 percent of the working age population is considered to be in the labor force, the lowest percentage in 35 years.

The shrinkage of the U.S. labor force reflects the U.S. economy’s current weakness – and threatens to perpetuate it. A waning labor force may decrease the country’s potential for growth over the long term; it raises the ratio of dependents (children, retirees) to active producers.

Declining labor force participation is often attributed to an increase in “discouraged workers,” those so frustrated by the lack of jobs that they quit hunting for one altogether.

But a May 2013 report by David Kelly and Brandon D. Odenath of JP Morgan Asset Management argues that, “discouraged workers” are a tiny and – since unemployment peaked at 10 percent in October 2009 – declining share of the population.

The government could do more to encourage work – beyond the obvious need for sound, pro-growth

fiscal and monetary policies. Two areas cry out for reform. Social Security Disability Insurance is a necessary safety net for most of its recipients; but because of a combination of financial benefits and malleable eligiblity standards, it creates a perverse incentive to quit work for some. About 11 percent of labor force shortfall since October 2009 is due to workers going on SSDI, Kelly and Odenath argue.

The current system of disability determinations effectively requires workers to give up looking for work – sometimes for many months – even to be eligible for benefits.

Meanwhile, rules and regulations discourage those who do qualify from trying to find suitable work thereafter.

Also in need of reform is the Earned Income Tax Credit, a wage supplement for low-wage workers, which has proven to be one of the most effective policy tools yet devised for encouraging work and eliminating poverty. Eligibility for the program is currently focused – appropriately enough – on working parents with children.

Single, childless workers can get a maximum of $487 per year, in contrast to more than $3,000 for a single parent of one child. An expanded EITC for single, childless workers would incentivize more of them to look for jobs.

The main cause of joblessness is the slow recovery from an epic recession.

But there is a danger that cyclical unemployment will, over time, become structural. Policymakers need to use all the tools at their disposal to prevent that.

However, when any person leaves a meeting and tells the press that my opposition to a 33 percent increase in payroll or about 25 percent increase to an entire agency budget are political and somehow personal, using examples that tend to scare people like “ … somebody with an ice pick in their head ... ,” he is distracting our mutual constituents from the real issue.

The real issue is tragically simple!

levy, especially during times when property values have dramatically decreased.

All taxpayers and I want to do is pay for only work that is necessary and actually performed. It’s not about the coroner. It’s not about the chairman. It’s about a 33 percent increase in the payroll and the impact on your property taxes.

The sheriff, state’s attorney, public defender, county auditor, circuit court clerk, county chairman, county clerk, recorder and nearly all county departments have submitted preliminary budgets that hold their spending within a range of 0 percent to 5 percent increases – before collective bargaining agreements and contingency allocations. Even these smaller increases will be hard to offset with any revenue increases that come from a fragile, recovering economy.

The coroner reminds us that he was elected by the people, and we

should not question the assumptions he makes in his first public budget. My response is, “Would voters have elected any candidate if they knew that his first public budget would increase spending by 25 percent?”

Perhaps a better approach would be to focus on managing an office that has been sadly neglected for several years, rather than focusing on spending much more money.

This is not political or personal.

It is about holding the line on the property tax levy.

The solution I propose is to ask the county auditor, who’s also elected by the people, to serve as an expert third party to check the assumptions behind any 25 percent budget increase. That way we may find some common ground between taxpayers and the coroner’s office.

East swimmers are learning their lessons

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East senior girls swimmers briefed younger teammates on meet basics at the beginning of Monday’s practice.

Notes to bring extra towels, not wear earrings or bracelets and not take backpacks on deck all were scrawled on a whiteboard.

It was an uncharacteristically low-key display compared to the regular flow of workouts. Senior Shea Hoyt got a taste when she transferred from Atlanta last year, and soon found them to be the team’s foundation.

There were lots of seniors then, but the atmosphere hasn’t changed as the Saints brace to bring their newcomers up to speed and improve on last season’s 14th-place state finish.

“The high school practices in Georgia are nothing compared to what it is here,” Hoyt said. “I just love all the cheering. It’s so much fun and it’s really intense and it’s a good vibe.”

Chapko competed in three overall finals that day, including the 400 freestyle relay. Just one member of that quartet returns, but she’s eager to keep the cycle going and inspire the freshmen and sophomores anew. Fourthyear varsity swimmer Izzie Bindseil realizes she’s not too far removed from their deck shoes, and welcomes the in-

teractions.

“They kind of just ask us for advice on anything,” Bindseil said. “We’re open to any questions they have on swimming, school, order of events, what they do during the meet, after the meet, stuff like that.”

There promises to be ample opportunity for on-the-job learning at today’s season opener against visiting Wheaton North. The Saints boast 63 swimmers in their program, one less than the Falcons.

The schools will compete on three levels.

“We’re going to have to harden up through the season to be prepared for that,” Cabel said, “because the state meet’s kind of a different animal mentally.”

Overall, Cabel called the Saints “very depthy,” and is confident knowing newer members are in the hands of seniors who are in the process of navigating another whiteboard lesson: handling college recruiting.

“I think we’re going to do really well,” Bindseil said.

“We have a lot of fun, so that’s always a good start-up.”

8SPORTS SHORT Saints’ Koenen picks Michigan State ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East senior Jasper Koenen has committed to play college tennis at Michigan State, he announced Monday.

Koenen took an official visit to Michigan State over the weekend and committed on Sunday night. He said he canceled four other visits he planned to take in the coming weeks.

“Now I get to enjoy my senior year, which is awesome,” Koenen said.

Koenen finished fourth in singles in the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament as a junior.

He will become the third member of his immediate family to enter the Division I tennis ranks, following in the footsteps of older sisters Annemijn and Liselot.

St. Charles resident Steve Spear on Friday reached New York City about five months after leaving Los Angeles on a cross-country run for his

Running For Water initiative.

Spear, as part of Team World Vision, aims to raise $1.5 million to provide a clean water and sanitation system for a Kenyan village of $30,000.

Speaking on a YouTube video filmed on the New York side of the George Washington Bridge, Spear relayed that while the running portion is over, the fundraising goal is ongoing.

In July, Spear’s daughter, Chelsea, said her father had raised $129,000.

Doctors diagnosed St. Charles resident Stacey Elders with Type 1 diabetes about seven years ago, just a week and a half before her 30th birthday.

Knowing it would help her manage diabetes and boost her bid to still eat junk food once in a while, Elders took up running shortly thereafter.

Elders covers five to 10 miles on most mornings to stay upbeat and active, but until Sunday had not experienced the other runner’s high of competing for someone else.

Her efforts entering her first Chicago Half Marathon raised $6,000 for Cancer Kiss My Cooley, a nonprofit organization geared toward raising community awareness for pediatric brain tumors.

“It’s great to see them turn something so unbelievably sad and tragic into something so positive and tremendous benefiting these children,” Elders said. “It gave me something to run for instead of just myself.”

Elders linked up with Huntley-based Cancer Kiss My Cooley – “cooley” or “coolie” is Italian slang for one’s backside – through her husband’s ties.

Jason Elders has known Joe and Cinnamon Kettner since high school. In May 2010, the couple’s 6-year-old son, Carter, died from inoperable brain cancer, 15 months after his diagnosis. Carter Kettner frequently sang “Cancer, kiss my cooley,” when receiving treatment.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The end of Saturday’s Jeff Leavey Invitational at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve was just as unplanned as the start of the cross country event.

Officials from host school St. Charles East canceled the Boys Open, the final race of the invitational, after two runners from the preceding contest, the girls fresh-soph race, required medical attention.

“We have runners down and we don’t need any more,” St. Charles East boys coach Chris Bosworth about the decision to drop the last competition.

A brief thunderstorm five minutes before the start of the Girls Open, the first race of the day, delayed the start of the invitational. After lightning was spotted, teams were required to return to their buses and wait out the storm. As a result, all start times were pushed back an hour as the weather heated up.

St. Charles North won the girls varsity race (77 points) with Geneva taking third (120) and St. Charles East fourth (126). Jacobs (89) and York (140) rounded out the top five teams.

Batavia came in seventh place (170) in the 13-team field.

Lauren Van Vlierbergen from Jacobs, seventh-place finisher in the IHSA Class 3A state cross country meet last year, took top honors in the race with a time of 18:03.3.

The Saints’ Torree Scull’s time of 18:17.7 earned her a second place finish. Ashley England of St. Charles North came in third, completing the 3-mile course in 18:22.6. Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer took fifth place with a time of 18:30.0. Dakota Roman of Batavia came in sixth place with a time of 18:53.8.

Wessel finished in eighth place (19:05.0) and Kaufmann in 15th place (19.21.2).

“I definitely was prepared to run with [Van Vlierbergen] even before the meet started,” Scull said. “I was just hoping that we could pace each other and it worked out pretty well.”

“We feel good about where we placed today,” East girls coach Mike Backer said. “In October, when it really counts, we are going to be where we want to be.”

In the boys varsity contest, Batavia took third place (118) behind Downers Grove North (73) and Jacobs (94). St. Charles East (145) came in fifth behind Wheaton North (137). Marmion took sixth place (153). Geneva came in 11th and St. Charles East 12th. Both schools scored 264 points, Geneva was given 11th because its sixth runner

placed higher than East’s. Fifteen schools fielded boys teams.

“It’s our first meet for our varsity and we are seeing what we have to do to get to [the state meet in] Peoria,” said Mike DiDomenico, Batavia boys coach. “I’m happy with what I saw up front but I think we can improve in the middle and at the back end.”

Zac Smith of Downers Grove North won the boys contest with a time of 15:05.5.

Geneva’s Blaine Bartel, who came in sixth with a time of 15:34.0, was the top area runner.

“It’s a person record for me,” Bartel said. “Actually, I was going too fast for my time. I saw the lead runner and just wanted to stay with him.”

Batavia’s Mitch Zabka took seventh place, completing the course in 15:39.2, only two tenths of a second ahead of East’s Will Muckian.

The top Marmion runner was Brady Bobbitt. The junior placed 14th with a time of 15:53.5.

Senior Nathan Klair paced North, finishing 26th with a time of 16:11.6.

WEST CHICAGO – The St. Charles East boys soccer team broke free from a scoreless first half with goals early in the second half from Zach Manibog and Taylor Ortiz, and the Saints held on Monday for a 2-0 nonconference win at Wheaton Academy.

East (4-0-1) remains unbeaten on the season while Wheaton Academy falls to 3-1.

“I think the first half we underperformed and I think Wheaton Academy was the better of the two teams but luckily we were in the position where we managed to keep it 0-0, and in the second half once we straightened out our play, right away we were fortunate enough to put two away, and that was good enough to get the win,” East coach Paul Jennison said.

Jennison said goalkeeper Mike Novotny made an excellent save in the first half en route to posting the shutout.

Streamwood 2, Kaneland 0: At Streamwood, Kaneland (2-2-1) allowed a pair of second-half goals in the nonconference loss.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM The first cane probably was just a strong stick, but by the 19th century a cane was a fashion accessory and sometimes hid a tool. The heads of canes were made of wood, ivory, gold or silver, leather, pewter or porcelain, sometimes with inlay and precious gems. Canes with a carving of a political candidate’s head were used until Franklin Roosevelt objected - because he was disabled. At recent antiques sales, there have been some very unusual canes. Some hid weapons. Sword canes are familiar because of movies. But few know there are canes that held parts of a gun, including ammunition - a hidden arsenal.

Another was a blow gun that could “shoot” bullets. A woman’s cane had a short knife blade to use for protection. A “flicker” cane was made so a short blade could pop out of the handle. Most deadly was the “Diabolique,” a cane outlawed in France. If someone tried to pull the cane, a set of spikes popped out of the shaft wounding the attacker’s hand.

There is a cane handle covered in carved grapes that unscrews to reveal a corkscrew. Another, a bamboo cane, has a horsemeasuring ruler inside. One held supplies for a writer - pens, paper, inkwell, penknife, eraser, pencil, sealing wax, a candle and matches. Another held a woman’s accessories, including tweezers, nail picks, buttonhook, crochet needle, bottles and fan. But that is not all. Imagine a cane that held a long, thin working violin and bow. An artist could get a cane that held an easel, palette and paints. Some canes are amusing. A peephole

Mother gets in way of couple’s relationship Dear Abby: I am a 75-yearold man who lives in a gated community. For the last eight months I have been seeing a woman who lives nearby. We are starting to fall in love.

Our problem is her 95-yearold mother, who lives with her. Her mom is pretty healthy and has some money, but she’s scared to be left alone. Because of this, my lady and I have difficulty finding private time.

We get out for short periods, but we’d like to go away for a weekend together. If we suggest it, Mom makes a stink and gets nasty with her daughter.

She’s suffering from slight dementia, but gets around OK with a walker. Mom claims she doesn’t want or need a “grandma sitter.” She wants only her daughter to take care of her and be with her. Any help would be appreciated. – Courting Trouble In Arizona Dear Courting: If your lady friend wants to have any life of her own, she will have to stiffen her spine and deal with Mama.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips This includes not allowing her mother’s sulking to prevent the two of you from having an occasional weekend together.

She should contact assisted-living facilities in the area and find out if they will accept guests for short stays of only a few days or a week. If the answer is yes, Mama should be offered a choice: Either someone comes to stay with her while you’re gone, a friend perhaps, or she will have to stay elsewhere because being alone is not an option.

Dear Abby: My brother died earlier this year due to an overdose. His wife and one of my sisters lived with him. They also gave him the drugs that caused his death.

Abby, they are treating Mom, my husband and me like dirt.

Mom had no say in the funeral at all. You would think that since

she was the mother, the wife would have included her. They have been having parties ever since the funeral and spending the money left and right, while not paying the mortgage on the house.

They have turned my other sister against us, blocked us on social media and cut us off completely. They also turned another part of the family against us. I know it involves drug abuse on the part of all of them.

I have no idea how to trust or to build a relationship with them again if they ever decide to come back into our lives. Any advice?

Cut down on sugar without replacing it artificially Dear Doctor K: I want to cut down on sugar in my diet. Are artificial sweeteners the answer?

Dear Reader: You’re wise to reduce the amount of sugar you consume. Sugar, particularly added sugar in foods and beverages, leads to weight gain – and excess weight increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems.

Sugar comes in many forms, including honey, brown rice syrup, corn syrup and molasses. You want to limit all of them.

Artificial sweeteners are sugar-free and typically lower in calories than sugar. All of the sweeteners on the market are considered safe. Earlier reports linking saccharin and aspartame to cancer have been disproved.

So, artificial sweeteners might seem like a healthier option than sugar. But that idea is controversial.

Dr. Michelle Hauser, certified chef, nutrition educator and clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School, explains it this way: On the one hand, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal), saccharin (Sweet’N Low) and sucralose (Splenda) can reduce the number of calories in your diet.

But artificial sweeteners are generally hundreds – or even thousands – of times sweeter than sugar. There is some evidence that they may make you crave sweets even more. I don’t regard that evidence as solid, but it is plausible.

You can cut down on sugar without replacing it with artificial sweeteners. Here are some tips: • Don’t eliminate all sugary foods at once. You’ll only crave sweets more.

• Keep sugary foods away.

Don’t tempt yourself by keeping candy, cookies and soda in your house. Stock your fruit bowl instead.

• Retrain your taste buds. Eat a healthy diet made up of more satisfying foods – whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy oils and lean protein.

• Sweeten foods yourself. Start with unsweetened iced tea, plain yogurt and unflavored oatmeal.

Add your own sweetener in the smallest amounts to be satisfying. It may surprise you to see how little sugar you need to add.

• Watch for hidden sugars.

Read food labels to find out how much sugar is in the foods you buy. Avoid products that list sugar as the first ingredient or that contain several different types of sugar.

Many of my patients try to achieve or maintain a healthy weight by avoiding fats but ignore the importance of sugar.

They’ve heard that, ounce for ounce, fat has more calories than sugar. That’s true, but there are healthy fats and unhealthy fats. It’s important to make that distinction. The unhealthy fats to avoid are saturated and trans fats. You can check for them on the Nutrition Facts label of packaged foods. The fats you need for health are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats: Don’t avoid those.

In contrast, generally avoiding foods rich in sugar is always a healthy choice.

Woman doesn’t love man she might marry Dr. Wallace: I just graduated from high school last June. I’ve had a miserable home life ever since my mother died six years ago. My dad is a very undesirable person. I have the academic ability to attend college, but college is not in my future for many reasons.

I’ve been dating Jake for about four months.

He’s a nice guy, and I like him very much. He treats me wonderfully.

Jake works in construction building houses and is paid well.

About a month ago, he said it would be neat if we ran away and got married. I told him to wait until I graduate, and I would then consider it.

I really want to get out of my house, and I am seriously thinking about marrying Jake. I probably will never find a nicer guy. He is 21 and said he’s ready to settle down and start a family.

My only problem is that I don’t love him.

If I do marry him, in time, will “like” turn into “love”? I guess I’m inquiring if I should marry Jake and try to live happily ever after.

That may be more possible than you think.

Even if it isn’t, it could be a goal that you work toward by finding a job and moving out on your own.

To marry Jake simply to escape an unhappy home life is not a promising foundation for a successful marriage.

Dear Nameless: Girls do enjoy receiving flowers but not from “secret admirers.” Your brother’s plan is more likely to alarm than thrill her – the mystery guy might be a stalker, after all. Furthermore, girls rarely go out with guys they don’t know exist, so save your money and find the courage to talk to her in person.

Once you’ve made her acquaintance, give her a call and ask her out. She’ll either say yes or no. If the answer is no, at least she knows you exist.

Believe me, that’s far better than being in the position you’re in now.

You may also realize it’s not all that hard to talk to girls once you get past the initial self-doubt.

And eventually a wonderful young woman will say yes.

That is fine as long as Genius isn’t missing the mark, which can happen. Slowly reaching the right answer is much better than jumping to the wrong conclusion.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest spade. East wins with his ace and returns the two (lowest of three remaining cards). South wins with his king and cashes the club ace, but East discards a spade. How should declarer proceed from there?

Also, what do you think of the bidding?

Taking those questions in reverse order, South should open two no-trump. He has 21 prime points with so many aces and kings. To open one diamond and rebid three clubs would probably work fine here, but it would risk missing a slam because partner would not expect such a powerful hand.

The bad club break is bothersome, but might South still take nine tricks?

Yes, if he can collect one spade, three hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. This seems to require the diamond finesse.

And that is a favorite, given that West started with five spades and four clubs. (The odds have gone up from 50 to 69 percent.)

However, here, if Genius immediately takes his three hearts tricks ending on the board and plays a diamond to his jack, he goes down. The talented player cashes his diamond ace first, just in case West started with a singleton queen. You never know!
