Crowds feast at annual Festival of the Vine

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Standing with her dog – a Bernese mountain dog named Quinn – Batavia resident Claudia Curtis on didn’t hesitate when asked why she returns to the Festival of the Vine every year.

“The food,” she said, noting she comes for such sweets as caramel corn, gelato and chocolate. “It’s an excuse to eat junk food.”

But the 32nd annual Festival of the Vine offered attendees more than food and wine.

The three-day Geneva festival featured live music, a craft show, trolley rides and children’s activities.

And, new this year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank gave attendees a chance to volunteer.

The organization received 1 million pounds of pumpkin pie filling that need to be relabeled, so it brought pallets of the 1-pound cans to Festival

“It was a constant crowd,” she said, noting a large group remained when the live music ended Saturday. “Another successful Festival of the Vine for Geneva and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.”

With 22 local restaurants and eateries participating in the Flavor Fare at West State and North Fourth streets, attendees Sunday had dozens of lunchtime options, including fish tacos, garlic crab pasta, black bean soup, shrimp and grits and Italian sausage with peppers.

Susan Rizzo of Wheaton and her 8-year-old son, Sam, said they liked sampling food from a variety of restaurants all at once. Sam was trying a ricotta stuffed meatball from Riganato Old World Grille.

“Dad’s out there, getting the next wave,” Susan Rizzo said. “These are all really great restaurants, so it’s fun getting them all at once.”

BATAVIA – Soldiers fighting in the Civil War didn’t just have to worry about getting killed in action.

“About a third of them died from infections, and another third died from disease,” said Civil War reenactor Mark Contratto of Aurora, who was portraying a private from the 104th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company H. “You had to worry about getting clean water, or getting water at all sometimes.”

Contratto was one of those participating Saturday in a Civil War celebration at the Batavia Riverwalk. The event, hosted by the Batavia Park District and Batavia Depot Museum, returns today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Civil War re-enactor Mark Contratto of Aurora took part Saturday in a Civil War celebration at the Batavia Riverwalk hosted by the Batavia Park District and Batavia Depot Museum.

was the first to fire shots at Gettysburg.

Bob Horbus of Batavia enjoyed learning about the history of the Civil War. “If you don’t know your history, you will repeat it, especially the mistakes of it,” Horbus said.

Patrick DeGeorge of McHenry was portraying a soldier in Battery G, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. He stressed that a lot of research goes into being a re-enactor.

“We try to be as authentic as possible,” DeGeorge said.

“We research the uniforms, the styles. For the last six years, I have been researching the original soldiers of Battery G.” Illinois played a big role in the Civil War, he noted.

“Illinois carried the fourth largest number of soldiers to the Civil War,” DeGeorge said. “Quite a few of them came from Kane County.”

ATAVIA – Sharon Sychta of Batavia knew she wanted to make a bold statement with her fabric and metal dress, which featured a six-foot diameter bottom hoop.

“I wanted it to fill the runway,” she said.

The dress was just one of the cutting edge fashions on display at Water Street Studios Saturday night as part of its second annual On-som-bel fundraiser. This year’s theme was “The Chair and What You Wear.”

Fittingly, the dress that Sychta designed featured a metal cage and chair inside.

“I wanted to create beauty and comfort and intrigue and mystery,” Sychta said.

Sychta was one of the original board members of the nonprofit Water Street Studios, which is marking its fifth anniversary this year.

“It’s good to be part of all of this,” Sychta said.

Modeling the dress was her daughter, Claire Sychta, 17, a senior at Batavia High School.

“It was fun to wear,” she said. “I’m really proud of my mom.”

Claire Sychta herself designed a dress made out of coffee filters that took second place at Batavia High School’s Rock the Runway event in May. The dress will be part of the Student Legacy Project at the Art In Your Eye fine art show and festival in

Cross country season heats up at Leavey Invite

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The end of Saturday’s Jeff Leavey Invitational at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve was just as unplanned as the start of the cross country event.

Officials from host school St. Charles East canceled the Boys Open, the final race of the invitational, after two runners from the preceding contest, the girls fresh-soph race, required medical attention.

“We have runners down and we don’t need any more,” St. Charles East boys coach Chris Bosworth about the decision to drop the last competition.

A brief thunderstorm five minutes before the start of the girls open, the first race of the day, delayed the start of the invitational. After lightning was spotted, teams were required to return to their buses and wait out the storm. As a result, all start times were pushed back an hour as the weather heated up.

St. Charles North won the girls varsity race (77 points) with Geneva taking third (120) and St. Charles East fourth (126). Jacobs (89) and York (140) rounded out the top five teams. Batavia came in seventh place (170) in the 13-team field.

Class 3A state cross country meet last year, took top honors in the race with a time of 18:03.3.

The Saints’ Torree Scull’s time of 18:17.7 earned her a second place finish. Ashley England of St. Charles North came in third, completing the 3-mile course in 18:22.6. Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer took fifth place with a time of 18:30.0. Dakota Roman of Batavia came in sixth place with a time of 18:53.8.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” North girls coach Shari Hayes of the first-place finish. “I ran a freshman up and it paid off. [Madison Kaufmann] was the third runner today. Ashley [England] and Kaylee [Wessel] ran really strong. That was huge and the rest of the team stepped up and finished where they needed to.”

Wessel finished in eighth place (19:05.0) and Kaufmann in 15th place (19.21.2).

“I definitely was prepared to run with her [Van Vlierbergen] even before the meet started,” Scull said. “I was just hoping that we could pace each other and it worked out pretty well.”

“We feel good about where we placed today,” East girls coach Mike Backer said. “In October, when it really counts, we are going to be where we want to be.”

In the boys varsity contest, Batavia took third place (118) behind Downers Grove North (73) and Jacobs (94). St.

Charles East (145) came in fifth behind Wheaton North (137). Marmion took sixth place (153). Geneva came in 11th and St. Charles East 12th. Both schools scored 264 points, Geneva was given 11th because its sixth runner placed higher than East’s. Fifteen schools fielded boys teams.

“It’s our first meet for our varsity and we are seeing what we have to do to get to [the state meet in] Peoria,” said Mike DiDomenico, Batavia boys coach. “I’m happy with what I saw up front but I think we can improve in the middle and at the back end.”

Zac Smith of Downers Grove North won the boys contest with a time of 15:05.5.

Geneva’s Blaine Bartel, who came in sixth with a time of 15:34.0, was the top area runner.

“It’s a person record for me,” Bartel said. “Actually I was going too fast for my time. I saw the lead runner and just wanted to stay with him.”

Batavia’s Mitch Zabka took seventh place, completing the course in 15:39.2, only two tenths of a second ahead of East’s Will Muckian.

The top Marmion runner was Brady Bobbitt. The junior placed 14th with a time of 15:53.5.

Senior Nathan Klair paced North, finishing 26th with a time of 16:11.6.

St. Charles East, the only 2-0 Tri-Cities team.

Kaneland, 30 regular-season wins and counting.

Someone woke up the North Stars.

And Marmion and St. Francis are looking like they’re ready to do some serious damage this season.

Those are some of Sly’s takeaway impressions after Week 2 of the football season.

Yeah, Batavia lost, which is certainly noteworthy, but probably not too big of a deal in the grand scheme. Don’t be fooled, the Bulldogs are still loaded, and they’ll get better as the year moves along.

What it does do is give others around the Tri-Cities, including a certain blue-clad opponent next week, hope that the Bulldogs are beatable.

Let the countdown begin to the Week 3 games between Batavia and Geneva and East and North.

Both of those games could be pretty competitive, and for Sly’s money, all four of those teams have shown they could be playoff-caliber this season.

That might not happen with all the beating up on one another, but all of these teams have plenty of reason to be optimistic with what they’ve shown to date.

East is in awesome shape to make the playoffs with the 2-0 nonconference start, so kudos to the Saints for taking care of business early.

Kaneland is scary good again.

This could very well be The Year for the Knights, who seem to have all the ingredients a team could want to do something special.

Fun start to the year. Can’t wait to see how these teams stack up in conference play.

In pool play, Geneva defeated Burlington Central, 25-22, 25-18; Illinois Math and Science Academy, 25-13, 25-9; and Morris, 25-15, 25-7.

Aurora Christian football picks up 2nd blowout KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – The Aurora Christian football team picked up its second blowout win against a Chicago Public League opponent in a five-day span, clocking Chicago Urban Prep on Saturday, 55-0.

Quarterback Austin Bray threw for three touchdowns, running back Legend Smith ran for three touchdowns and linebacker Dan Clapp returned a fumble for a touchdown in the win.

Eagles coach Don Beebe said his team’s defense was “smothering” and said he thinks Aurora Christian has created nine turnovers while only committing one offensively through two games.

Aurora Christian (2-0) rolled despite a short turnaround from Tuesday’s rescheduled game against DuSable.

Aurora Central Catholic 42, Bogan 7: At Chicago, ACC (2-0) rolled in its first game action of the season.

Julian Rios rushed for about 80 yards and three

touchdowns and also had a receiving TD. Brian Bohr rushed for about 75 yards.

The Chargers defense picked up four turnovers, including an interception from Cody Ekstrom.

The Chargers won by forfeit Week 1 against Oostburg (Wis.).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Conant Early Bird Invitational: St. Francis defended its tournament title, defeating Lake Zurich in the semifinal and St. Charles East in the championship match.

Spartans coach Peg Kopec said St. Francis (6-1) was led by “exceptional serving” from Lisa Mordell and strong play at the net from Molly Haggerty.

GENEVA – The Geneva girls volleyball team battled through oppressive heat to defeat four teams and win the first game from Joliet Catholic in the final of the Geneva Invite on Saturday.

But Joliet Catholic stepped up to the challenge, took the second game and went on to win the third to claim the championship match, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15.

The second-place Vikings finished the invite 4-1 and moved to 7-2 on the season.

“The last couple of years we had a really difficult time doing well in this tournament, so we pushed as hard and played the best we could, so it’s a tough loss,” Geneva setter Courtney Caruso said.

“They had a lot of energy and pushed really hard. We’re all tired from all the matches, and we let it get to us. They pushed through it and started pounding balls.

“When you’re tired physically, it really becomes a mental battle. We couldn’t push through,

but we did the best we could, and I’m proud of our team.”

In Game 1 against Joliet Catholic, Geneva used a 6-0 run to turn a 13-12 deficit into an 18-13 lead. Taylor Marmitt had a kill and Kyley Thompson a service point during the spurt.

The Vikings closed out Game 1 on a block-kill by Maddie Courter.

Game 2 was tied as late as 1919 on a kill by Marmitt, but Joliet Catholic staved off elimination by winning the game.

The deciding game was tight early, but slowly Joliet Catholic pulled away. The Vikings trailed, 16-12, before getting outscored 9-3 to end the match. On the final point, Geneva sent the wrong player back to serve, handing Joliet Catholic the winning point. “[Joliet Catholic] really doesn’t have a low place to go to,” Vikings coach KC Johnsen said.

“When they’re a little off, they’re still pretty good. When we were off, they kind of took advantage.

“We’re about the second happiest we can be. We had a good day, played pretty well.”

When I went on break to buy lunch with my ATM card, Anita came waltzing over and immediately told the cashier to ring up the cigarettes on my ATM card! She said she’d pay me back more than the amount charged to my card.

In the future, how can I handle this if it happens again? Dear Abby: Our nanny, who is 58, was diagnosed with breast cancer just before I delivered baby No. 2.

The boys are now 15 months and 4 weeks old.

“Nora” has started chemotherapy after having surgery.

I completely understand that she has to attend to her needs right now and focus on her health, but she wanted to continue working without it being an issue. Nora has had to take off several days already in addition to being – as I expected – tired and unable to keep up with my active toddler.

I start back to work soon and my job is a demanding one. My husband and I have discussed options and feel it would be best to mandate that Nora take this time off.

We will have to make other arrangements for child care, and I can’t guarantee Nora’s job when she feels better.

She has taken such good care of our first son it kills me to have to let her go, especially while she’s dealing with cancer. But I must return to work and do what’s best for my kids. Any advice?

Ask if she knows someone reliable who could watch the children on those days when she is too weak to do so. Or contact a household staffing agency about getting a temporary fill-in. It would be far more humane than firing her.

For Nora’s sake, please try it. If my suggestions don’t work, revisit letting her go at a later time.

Dear Abby: My 61-year-old father was arrested recently for 30 counts of possession of child pornography. He has had a rough past – he cheated on my mother and has had multiple stints in rehab for alcohol abuse.

Do not waste ‘useless’ assets

SOLUTION

CELEBRITY CIPHER

Harold Wilson, who was the British prime minister for two separate terms, said, “I believe the greatest asset a head of state can have is the ability to get a good night’s sleep.”

It does not pay to be sleepy at the bridge table, which is why many players consume caffeinated drinks. Today’s deal, though, is about declarer making the most of his assets, the cards.

South is in four hearts. West leads a low spade. How should declarer proceed?

North gets three points for his singleton, so it easily worth three hearts. (His hand also has eight losers.)

The North hand has few assets, but it is important to make the most of them. South must not call for dummy’s spade king at trick one. It is so unlikely that West is underleading the ace. And, here, if East does take the first trick with his ace over dummy’s king, declarer will lose two spades, one heart and one diamond.

Instead, let dummy play low.

After East wins the first trick with his 10, what does he do next?

If East cashes the spade ace, declarer will discard his diamond loser on the spade king, ruff his club three on the board, and lose only two spades and one heart.

Suppose East does not take his ace, shifting to a club. Then declarer wins in his hand; draws one round of trumps; cashes his two top clubs, sluffing dummy’s remaining spades; and, to get communication between the two hands, plays two rounds of diamonds. Whatever happens now, South can draw a second round of trumps, ruff his last spade on the board, ruff a diamond in his hand, and ruff the club three to get home.
