Why do you build me up ... butternut?

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Don’t you hate it when you get a song stuck in your head?

For the past few weeks, I’ve had recurring bouts of that great Foundations hit, “Build Me Up Buttercup” popping into my brain at random and sometimes inconvenient times.

Don’t get me wrong, “Buttercup” is a great song.

It’s catchy and infectious. But it also has a whole verse that I just can’t seem to get right, lyrics wise. That little hitch leads me to go back to the first verse, which leads back to the chorus of “…build me up, Buttercup…” over and over and over again.

What I couldn’t figure out was why the song kept coming to me. Until the other day.

I was pulling some buckthorn seedlings by the garage when I noticed it, lying on the ground beneath the remote keypad that I use almost daily.

It clearly had been there for a while. Assorted twigs, grass clippings and other yard debris were scattered around it but the object itself was oddly untouched – all the better to insinuate itself into my brain subconsciously.

It was – not a buttercup – but a butternut.

So much for getting the words right.

The butternut, or Juglans cinerea, is a tree in the same genus as the black walnut, Juglans nigra. In fact, one of its other common names is white walnut, for the light color of its wood. The two trees do share several traits, but what’s interesting to me are their many differences.

For one, while black walnuts are ubiquitous, butternuts are rare.

Susceptible to a canker disease that’s caused by a fungus with a $10 name, Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum, the tree’s numbers have been reduced by as much as 80 percent in the states that comprise its home range (eastern United States and southeast Canada). Rich in oil and flavor, butternuts are prized by humans and wildlife alike, but where this particular nut came from is anyone’s guess. butternut canker often is dubbed one of our country’s greatest tree tragedies.

Another major difference lies in the trees’ structural components. In natural areas, where fire is used as a management tool, black walnuts are relatively resistant to the effects of high heat; their thick bark and strong heartwood protect them from damage and resulting decay.

Meanwhile, butternuts do not tolerate fire well and frequently succumb if burned.

Dendrologists, naturalists and others who enjoy identifying trees by using characteristics other than leaves will quickly recognize black walnuts as the trees with the “monkey face” leaf

scar; the point where the leaf is attached to the branch does indeed bear a strong resemblance to Curious George.

For butternuts, though, that monkey face is enhanced by a band of hairs above its top edge. Imagine Curious George with a unibrow and you’ll get the picture.

Then we have the butternut’s namesake fruit. Like its cousin the black walnut, the butternut’s nut is protected by a thick green husk. But unlike J. nigra, which bears round, smooth-coated fruit about the size of a handball, the butternut’s fruit is oblong in shape, hairy and sticky.

Inside, the nutshell is marked by deep furrows.

thought it was a peach pit on steroids. In fact, I still do.

This most recent discovery was no different. Right before “Buttercup” took over again, I had a fleeting thought of, “Wow, that is one giant peach pit! Er, butternut.”

Now, how the butternut came to be by my garage is another mystery. Perhaps a squirrel placed it there, opting to cache the nut in plain sight as opposed to burying it.

Blaze destroys barn in Campton Township

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Firefighters from seven agencies battled a fire Friday afternoon that destroyed a barn in Campton Township.

Firefighters were called to 44W363 Lees Road, just west of Route 47, for a hay barn fire at 12:10 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a fully involved fire throughout the barn, said Tate Haley, assistant fire chief of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

There were no animals in the structure, he said, adding there were also no injuries.

After extinguishing the flames, firefighters worked on

hosing down the hay, Haley said.

Units shuttled water to the scene from a nearby pond, he said.

Although the hay barn was estimated at a total loss, Haley said, firefighters saved another barn next to it.

The cause of the fire was not determined Friday afternoon, Haley said.

Elburn was assisted by units from Burlington, Maple Park, Pingree Grove, South Elgin, St. Charles and Geneva, Haley said.

He noted Batavia and Kaneville units were on standby at Elburn’s quarters to handle calls within the district.

But what doesn’t add up is the fact that there are no butternut trees in close proximity to my yard – at least not that I’ve been able to find.

The nearest one I’ve come across so far is more than two blocks away. A squirrel would need to be very determined to carry a nut that far before hiding it ... in plain sight.

My other theory is that the butternut appeared, not from the mouth of a squirrel, but rather the beak of a crow.

No slouches when it comes to planning ahead, crows frequently stash food for later consumption, often opting for tree forks and cavities.

But I suppose, a secluded nook by a garage might do in a pinch.

Further complicating matters, the butternut in question is not from this year’s crop.

The green husk is long gone, and the nutshell is dry and weathered. But I know the nut was not in its current location a few months ago when I previously planted and weeded in that area; I’m guess-

ing it arrived sometime in late June or early July.

I was about to give up and write the nut’s appearance off to some fluke of nature, or those who study it (items far stranger than nuts have fallen from my pockets). But then, Thursday night, I saw through the dusty window of my laundry room ... another butternut, cached in the corner of the outside sill.

Just when I was willing to let the butternut question subside, there it was, back again.

Why do you build me up

This one’s not over. Not by a long shot. Build me up, butternut, don’t break my heart.

Man charged with growing marijuana plants in backyard

Gregory T. Panzer, 59, of the 200 block of Division Street, also was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police came to Panzer’s house while following up a harassment complaint where they were told that a man’s estranged girlfriend’s neighbor allegedly was growing marijuana in his backyard.

According to police reports, the woman pointed to what appeared to be marijuana through the fence.

Police took digital photos, and when Panzer came outside, they inquired about what was growing in his backyard.

According to reports, Panzer escorted police to his backyard where marijuana plants were growing 15 inches from his house and along the eastern fence line.

Sixty-nine plants in all were removed.

Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said in an email that the plants all were between 11 inches and 4½ feet high, and that marijuana comes back every year as a perennial.

Nash also said the sale value of the plants was unknown.

A devoted White Sox fan, Joseph Nottolini said his father met his wife, Kay, during their freshman year at St. Edward Central Catholic High School and dated until they married.

Nottolini also served as chief judge from 1993 to 1996

and as ethics adviser for the Kane County Board from 2008 to 2012, and was currently serving on the Ethics boards for Sherman Hospital and Elgin Community College.

ELGIN â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Retired Kane County Judge Gene Nottolini was known as a kind, common-sense type of judge.

A respected jurist for 21 years, from 1984 to his retirement in 2005, Nottolini, 69, of Elgin, died Thursday at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin of leukemia, his family said.

Chief Judge Judy Brawka said Nottolini was the kind of judge that a new judge would try to emulate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gene was an extraordinary jurist,â&#x20AC;? Brawka said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He brought a dignity and understanding of common sense to the proceedings. ... He had an uncanny ability to resolve disputes. That is the job of every judge, but he was able to masterfully settle cases as well as calm people down.â&#x20AC;?

Brawka said Nottolini was respected by attorneys and fellow judges across the state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He had assignments from the [Illinois] Supreme Court to serve on various commit-

tees,â&#x20AC;? Brawka said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Gene retired, we knew we had lost a very good judge.

Now that he has passed on, we know we have lost a good friend. We will really miss him.â&#x20AC;?

Kane County Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Attorney Joe Gene McMahon said Nottolini in a statement that he was saddened to hear of his death. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Judge Nottolini was known and respected for his kindness,â&#x20AC;? McMahon said.

nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Festival of the Vine may celebrate wine, but it was the food at the Flavor Fare that drew Martha and Art Sanchez of Elburn to downtown Geneva on Friday afternoon.

Empty plates sat before them under the dining tent after they had toured the Flavor Fare on North Fourth Street.

Martha Sanchez tried the filet minisandwiches from the Geneva Ale House, while Art Sanchez tried the pot roast sandwich from Egg Harbor Cafe. Missing, however, was any sign of wine.

“Food’s first for us,” Martha Sanchez said.

This year, 22 restaurants are featured in the Flavor Fare, said Laura Rush, communications manager for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. She said many are returning restaurants, and some decided to change up their menus this year. Vendors offered 17 to 20 types of wines at varying price points, she added.

The festival, which is presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, runs through Sunday and features live entertainment, an arts and crafts show, demonstra-

Local sponsors helped supply complimentary horse carriage rides, and a trolley is set to take festivalgoers from stop to stop today and Sunday.

The annual arts and crafts show will wrap around the Kane County Courthouse on Third Street in Geneva from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Rush said 75 crafters from three states are slated to set up booths this year.

“It’s a very busy festival for only three days,” Rush said.

Although it’s busy, Rush said it has a laid-back feel and festivalgoers always seem to be in good spirits.

“Everyone is happy. They just have a smile on their face,” she said. “Every festival we do has a different feel.”

Her tour of the Flavor Fare included a shrimp avocado tostada with chips and salsa from Sergio’s Cantina, and she tried a glass of Rex Goliath pinot grigio – described as having a “bright, and racy acidity, beautifully balanced with fresh citrus, leading to a crisp, refreshing finish,” according to festival literature.

“I like to go out and relax and shop around,” she said.

“I always come back and taste different samples. The people are friendly, and it’s a really nice town.”

In 1983, Judge Nottolini was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2004, he was able to reserve a place for 50 attorneys from the Kane County Bar Association to be sworn in to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Judge Nottolini served as ethics adviser for the Kane County Board from 2008 to 2012, and was currently serving on the Ethics Boards for Sherman Hospital and Elgin Community College.

Survivors include the love of his life, Kay (McKeown) Nottolini, whom he married Sept. 3, 1966; two sons, Gene Nottolini Jr. and Joseph Nottolini; five grandchildren, Augie, Izzy, Natalie, Sal and Vinny; a brother, Jules (Marylyn) Nottolini; his “favorite” sisterin-law, Colleen McKeown, along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Rick Nottolini.

ST. CHARLES – Those who want to know what Charlestowne Mall could look like under the pending new ownership will get their chance Monday.

San Francisco-based The Krausz Companies Inc. is expected to present concept plans for the redevelopment and relaunch of the mall during the 7 p.m. Planning and Development Committee meeting.

The Krausz Companies is part of the ownership and redevelopment team seeking to buy the mall at 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles, said Neil Johnson of Sperry Van Ness/ Landmark Commercial Real Estate, which represents the seller and buyer on the sale that is under contract.

Johnson said a closing date has not yet been scheduled, but the new ownership is starting the process to get some changes approved with the city.

The conceptual plans show the developer’s intention and are subject to change, he said.

Mayor Ray Rogina said he is optimistic and happy that the potential buyers are going through this first stage of introducing themselves and their intentions to the community.

“We’ll have to see how it plays itself out,” he said.

City Administrator Mark Koenen, who has seen the concept plans, said a rejuvenation of Charlestowne Mall is a good sign for East Main Street.

“The mall as it stands today was constructed in 19891990. It needs to be updated,”

CHARLES – St. Charles police officers charged three motorists with driving under the influence during a two-week traffic enforcement period that ended Monday, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

The safety campaign was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Depart-

ment of Transportation.

In addition to the DUI arrests, police arrested one person on a warrant, issued 28 citations for seat belt violations, ticketed six for driving without insurance and cited 17 for speeding.

Police also issued five citations and 28 warnings for other violations.

The initiative was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Park Board is expected to appoint Holly Cabel as its next director Tuesday, the St. Charles Park District announced Friday.

Cabel, a longtime St. Charles resident, will be the park district’s second director since longtime director James Breen Holly Cabel retired in 2011.

Ray Ochromowicz, Breen’s successor, retired from the district Aug. 31.

Neither Cabel nor park board President Karrsten Goettel were available by phone Friday afternoon for comment.

Cabel has worked for the park district for 17 years, seven of which as the superintendent of recreation.

She managed the recreation budget, which includes 1,500

annual programs and services at the Pottawatomie Community Center, Otter Cove Aquatic Park, Swanson Swimming Pool, River View Miniature Golf Course and the STC Underground Teen Center, according to the release.

Additionally, Cabel has been directly involved in facility and park improvement projects, such as the construction of Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Hickory Knolls Discovery Center and the renovation of Swanson Swimming Pool.

She also is active in the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation, St. Charles Arts Council, Norris Cultural Art Center, Kane County Healthy Places Coalition and Kane County Fit for Kids, according to the release.

The park board’s meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., St. Charles.

Members will vote on Cabel’s appointment as well as her contract.

Lauzen releases short list for vacant RTA/Metra post

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen released a list of 11 applicants who are being considered on a “short list” to be appointed as the county’s representative to the Regional Transportation Authority and Metra.

The applicants are Don DeWitte, former mayor of St. Charles; Carl Dinwiddie of Batavia, retired from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and a local activist; D.J. Tegeler, a Geneva lawyer who ran and lost for circuit judge in 2010; Jake Wyatt of St. Charles, who lost to current Mayor Ray Rogina in the most recent St. Charles mayoral race; Bonnie Kunkel, an Aurora attorney and former Democratic Kane County Board member who chose not to seek another term in the most recent election; and Manuel Barbosa, a retired federal bankruptcy judge who lives in Elgin.

by Chairman Lauzen and the County Board for such a prestigious position,” Tegeler said.

Interviews of half of the candidates will be completed

by Monday.

In a statement, Lauzen said he was “delighted with the quality and quantity of applicants” and grateful for work

by board members Debra Allen, Drew Frasz, Brian Pollock and T. R. Smith to help narrow the field.

The criteria to be chosen includes a proven record of administrative, management and budgetary skills and detailed knowledge of the county’s government policies, according to Lauzen’s statement.

The chairman also alluded to the problems the current transit boards are having – with resignations, investigations and accusations of caving in to clout.

“Friends have kidded me – and several applicants – that a full psychological assessment should be conducted on any person who would dare to apply for these duties,” according to Lauzen’s statement.

“That is further reason why I am doubly grateful for these distinguished citizens’ courage and obvious competence to serve.”

The children were left behind The most frustrating aspect of the unnecessary two-year legal battle that St. Charles School District 303 has put the community through is that the educational paths of students who most needed help were irrevocably interrupted.

At the root of this issue is the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which demands 100 percent of schoolchildren be proficient in reading and math by 2014. Using several factors – including performance on standardized tests – students are measured by grade level and subgroups including gender, race, special needs and socioeconomic status.

Each year, a higher number of students must meet proficiency benchmarks, called Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP. One subgroup that doesn’t means an entire school and district fails, and improvements must be implemented. Improvements grow in severity the longer a school doesn’t meet AYP. District 303’s saga started in 2011, when the school board voted to make Davis a K-2 school and Richmond third through fifth grades.

Both had been K-5 schools.

The district said it was a facilities issue, as Richmond was underused and Davis overcrowded.

Richmond had not made AYP for years and was mandated to make significant changes – including offering the choice for parents to enroll their children in other district schools, which more than 100 did.

By changing the grade levels, the state let the district roll back Richmond’s status to having not met AYP to just one year, so the district

didn’t have to make as many improvements.

Parents filed a lawsuit in 2011, alleging the district circumvented the federal act.

Last week, a judge agreed and ruled the move was done to get around having to address Richmond’s lack of academic progress. The ruling noted the district’s plan didn’t include strategies to help the struggling subgroups, which have continued to not meet AYP since 2011.

It is regrettable that school districts have to follow so many federal and state mandates, often with little-to-no funding to implement them.

And we share the frustration No Child Left Behind has wrought: While it was an admirable goal, it is unrealistic, singles out students who least need added pressure and slaps what amounts to a “failure” label on them.

But it’s law. It must be followed. The district’s failure to do so has harmed the education of its students, and wasted taxpayer dollars – estimated by one school board member to be about $225,000 – defending its actions.

We encourage the district and school board to follow the court mandate of developing within six months a revised plan for the Davis-Richmond school buildings. Attend all court hearings, meet all mandates from the court and the federal law, and solicit input from parents. When making future decisions, it must remember this leadership failure and do better for the community it represents.

And most of all, district leaders must ensure the kids who need help get it it. Because they have lost the most throughout this debacle.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A community-based initiative To the Editor: The need for community philanthropy is tremendous. I want to thank everyone who contributed to and supported this year’s Project Backpack held at Elgin Community College’s Spartan Drive Campus.

On Aug. 10, we distributed more than 1,800 new backpacks filled with pencils, folders, notebooks, pens, paper, scissors, crayons and rulers donated by individuals, retailers, churches and community organizations. Though the advertised hours were from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., family members began lining up at 10 p.m. the previous night. It is estimated that by 10 a.m. the next morning, when the doors opened some 4,000 people were waiting with anticipation.

Project Backpack is a community-based initiative led by ECC to benefit needy families in ECC’s District 509, which includes school districts U-46, 300, 301 and 303. This year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank joined our efforts and supplied families with approximately 3,000 bags of nonperishable food items.

In addition to receiving bags of food and backpacks, families had the opportunity to interact with representatives from more than two dozen community agencies.

education in District 304, and (Superintendent) Dr. Kent Mutchler. It was one year ago that teachers were asked to take a pay freeze because of the economy, but yet he is getting thousands more for raising ACT scores and getting the teacher evaluation system in place.

I’d like to know what lessons he taught to students to raise those test scores that he is getting all the credit for. What a slap in the face to taxpayers and teachers.

What a sad, sad state of affairs. Who gets to evaluate the board of education and Dr. Mutchler? I’d give you an “E” for embarrassment and an “F” for failure.

Little regard for taxpayers Just finished writing my school tax check. Geneva school board please, please, please stop raising our taxes so you can provide outstanding raises, pensions and health care for teachers and administrators – three things we do not have here in our home. ... Firemen don’t just put out fires. I’d like to acknowledge the many services our Batavia firemen give us. Aside from putting out fires, their main function, I have seen them at senior clubs, giving instructions on how to save a person if they are choking, and also taking blood pressure while answering questions. My fire alarm started to beep, so I changed the battery.

A few days later, when I came home, I found it beeping again. I called the nonemergency number, and the firemen came. It was the carbon monoxide detector.

In no time, they inspected it and found it was too close to the fire alarm.

They relocated it, and the beeping stopped.

Thank you, one and all. This is truly what heroes are made of.

We are so lucky to have our Batavia firemen.

Local officials gather at pedestrian underpass

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Although the $1.85 million project was finished a month ago, officials gathered Friday for a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony at the South Street Trail Bicycle/Pedestrian Underpass.

As Randall Road carries 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles a day, Kane County Transportation Deputy Director Tom Rickert said having the underpass open to allow safe passage for bicyclists, pedestrians and joggers reflects the county’s goal of promoting healthy living.

“We really seek to address the multi-modal aspect of transportation,” Rickert said. “We need to continue to improve the safety of the other uses – pedestrian and bicyclists along the road.”

Kane County Engineer and Transportation Director Carl Schoedel rode his bicycle to the event.

Greg Bales, suburban outreach coordinator for U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, said when people talk about federal spending, “this is what it looks like.”

Federal money made up 80 percent of the project’s cost with $360,000 in county transportation funds making up the balance.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen praised the underpass project.

“We have this wonderful gift that’s been built and provided by taxpayers of Kane County and the wonderful city of Geneva,” Lauzen said. “A trail system isn’t as good as it could be if there is no connectivity, so this component of the trail system provides connectivity.”

Lauzen thanked federal and state taxpayers in addition to local taxpayers, the Illinois Department of Transportation for administering the federal funds, as well as the federal government and the City of Geneva for their partnership in the project.

Ed Foster of Geneva, one of a group of bicyclists who came to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, said he was happy with the project.

“It provides a very good way to get from the east side of Randall Road to the west side

of Randall Road,” Foster said of the tunnel. “Now we don’t have to cross that Keslinger up there. We don’t have to go to Fargo and wait in line for the lights and the cars turning. It’s a much safer way to get across here.”

Travelers can come through the tunnel at the end of South Street, then go up a slope to the Keslinger and Randall road intersection to cross and continue.

“There is a little push-button by the traffic lights there [at Keslinger and Randall] to turn the walk signal on.” Foster said. “Everybody’s supposed to stop.”

NO. 30 RESONATES IN WIN Kaneland extends regular-season winning streak by downing IC

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The 30th straight regular season win for the Kaneland football program, dating to the end of the 2009 season, came relatively easily for the Knights.

Kaneland’s jersey No. 30 had plenty to do with that. Senior running back Jesse Balluff rushed for the Knights’ first three touchdowns of the night Friday en route to a banner outing in Kaneland’s 45-14 win against IC Catholic.

Balluff finished the night with 182 yards on 16 carries, inflicting most of that damage early as Kaneland seized complete command.

Balluff credited Kaneland’s vaunted offensive line – right tackle Justin Diddell, right

guard Alex Snyder, center Zach Thielk, left guard Shane Jorgensen and left tackle Joe Komel – for emboldening coach Tom Fedderly to set the tone on the ground.

“We just love running this year,” Balluff said. “We have a huge line that just is dominant. Anyone can run behind them and get touchdowns. Seriously. It’s amazing.”

Balluff scored on runs of 20, 35 and 1 yard in the opening half as Kaneland claimed a 31-7 lead by the break. Also included on Kaneland’s lengthy first half highlight reel were a 38-yard Matt Rodriguez field goal and a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Cole Carlson.

Kaneland (2-0) ran the ball on all nine plays of its opening, 75-yard drive.

“We thought we had that advantage up front so we were just going to keep running the ball until they stopped it,” Fedderly said.

The Knights’ defense held IC Catholic to negative yardage on the ground in the first half despite playing without usual starting middle linebacker Gary Koehring, who was out with a minor injury.

The host Knights weren’t easy to deal with when IC’s quarterback duo of Jack Copher

or Rhashaun Epting dropped back to pass, either, as linebacker Sam Bower and Diddell each notched sacks in the late stages of the second quarter.

“Man, those guys have fun playing over there,” Fedderly said of his defense. “Those kids just fly around the ball and they play really good, sound, team defense. They play well, they communicate together and they hustle. It’s fun to watch those kids.”

Kaneland senior quarterback Drew David went 10 for 16 for 169 yards and threw no interceptions a week after tossing three. He was replaced after the third quarter with his team cruising, 45-7.

Fedderly said he thought Kaneland played a strong first half in last week’s season-opening win against Brooks before finishing the game in sloppy fashion. That wasn’t the case this time as Kaneland never gave IC Catholic an opening, allowing the reserves to see ample time down the stretch.

This year’s team has only contributed two wins toward that 30-game total, though there are numerous holdovers who have been a part of many more. Balluff called the streak “amazing.”

“We take pride on just winning games,” he said. “You see on the back of the press box, ‘A Winning Tradition,’ and that’s what we pride ourselves on.”

Mitchell, Saints erupt in second half

It was a welcome sight after a shaky start against Jacobs. Moments later, the sequence became clockwork.

East overwhelmed Jacobs down the stretch of its home opener, scoring on its first six possessions after halftime en route to a 41-26 win.

Mitchell unquestionably keyed the surge, going 15 for 16 for 203 yards after starting 3 of 12 with an interception before halftime.

“We were flat. We went into the locker room after the first half, there were some guys hanging their heads,” Mitchell said. “And I was just like, ‘When we go out there, we’re just going to go punch them right in the mouth.

We’re going to go score on the first drive and we’re not going to let up.’ I mean, that’s what happened.”

Mitchell finished with 271 yards through the air, with scoring passes to Phil Hopper, AJ Washington and Flanigan.

Although the Golden Eagles had an eruption of their own with 20 second-half points, East’s defense made stops when it needed to, including interceptions from Brannon Barry and Michael Grohe.

“We knew we had it, and all the conditioning we’ve done so far, it’s really paid off,” Saints defensive lineman Luke Spicer said. “We’re a really close-knit group, and we knew that we could pull this thing out, for sure.”

The game shifted in the third quarter after Jacobs dropped a would-be touchdown with Mooney passing down the left sideline on 4th and 7 from the East 37. The Saints scored 15 seconds later on a 3-yard Lopez run, taking a 14-6 lead on Pat Frio’s point-after.

“It’s definitely a tale of two halves. Those guys really played a heck of a second half and we just kind of folded after that [drop],” Golden Eagles coach Bill Mitz said.

“The momentum just completely switched. Just completely switched. It was a big momentum-changer, and they took advantage of it.”

Falcons fly past Vikings Wheaton North’s second-quarter onslaught too much for Geneva

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Wheaton North used a 24-point second quarter explosion to gain some separation from Geneva and went on to record a 40-27 victory Friday night at Burgess Field.

The Falcons took advantage of a pair of Viking mistakes to score 17 unanswered points in the quarter to open up a 24-6 lead.

“That’s what good teams do,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “They take advantage of the things you don’t quite do so well.”

Nick Cairo booted a 37-yard field goal to start the scoring

spree for the Falcons (2-0). He was successful on another try from 26 yards out on Wheaton North’s next possession, but a running into the kicker penalty gave the Falcons a first down at the Geneva 4-yard line. From there, Michael Bloss hauled in a touchdown pass from Clayton Thorson.

On the next play from scrimmage, Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina was picked off in the flat by Mike Ceron, and he returned the interception 28 yards for a touchdown.

The Vikings (1-1) got as close as 31-20 early in the third quarter on a 1-yard plunge by T.J. Miller.

Miller was the workhorse on the ground for Geneva, gaining 56 yards on 20 carries, but the Vikings had to go to the air frequently in the second half as they tried to play catch up.

Heralded Wheaton North quarterback Clayton Thorson threw for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

“They’ve got some great receivers, a lot of athletes all

over, they spread the ball and make us work one-on-one, and that quarterback, man, Thorson or whatever his name is, he just puts it there,” said Geneva junior Pace Temple A couple times we thought we were in great position and all of a sudden the ball is just there and you can’t do anything about it.”

Santacaterina did his best to keep up with Thorson, throwing for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 12-yard jump ball that Temple went up and got to pull Geneva to within 11 at the half.

“They were zoning us most of the game and we got a chance for a little one-on-one

so Daniel just kind of gave me a fade,” Temple said. “We ran it and he put the ball there and I went up and made a play. …

He put the ball right where it needed to be and everything worked out.”

The Falcons took advantage of a short field often in the game, including scoring their first touchdown after the Vikings were unsuccessful on a fourth-and-8 play at their own 13.

“We didn’t want to punt to that 83 [Matt Biegalski],” Wicinski said. “It was a strategy that maybe worked out not the best. That’s something we’ve got to go back and evaluate.”

Batavia’s winning streak snapped

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Before last week’s season-opening win against Glenbard North, it was Batavia coach Dennis Piron’s opinion that the Bulldogs had never faced a tougher nonconference schedule.

After hanging on to beat the Panthers last week, the Bulldogs faced Micah Coffey what Piron considered an equally tough test in 2012 playoff participant Richards.

With the score tied at 13 at the half, Richards big-play ability bit Batavia three times early in the third quarter, as the visiting Bulldogs grabbed a big lead and hung on for a 31-

26 win.

The victory ended Batavia’s 20-game regular season winning streak and handed Piron his first regular season loss since taking over in 2011.

“Coming into these two games, our two opponents posed two different issues,” Piron said.

“This team has skill at every position on the field and their linebackers are Anthony phenomenal.

We had a turnover or two that hurt us tonight. They are the type of team that can hit you with the big play here and there and they did.”

The big play reared its ugly head at Batavia as Richards scored on a 78-yard touchdown

pass on the first play in the third quarter. Richards’ quarterback Hasan Muhammad-Rogers hit Tacari Carpenter on a screen and Carpenter broke a tackle and was gone.

The touchdown gave Richards a 19-13 lead and set the tone in the second half for Richards.

“We really do have athletes and we can get the ball in their hands and they can do magical things,” Muhammad-Rogers said. “We just figure that we can beat people with our speed and how quick we are.”

After the score, Richards

forced a quick Batavia offensive possession and quickly put together a four-play drive that saw Muhammad-Rogers find Ryan Willett on a bubble screen that Willett broke for a 49-yard touchdown.

On Batavia’s very next possession, Batavia drove nearly 60 yards on 11 plays before Anthony Scaccia fumbled. Dylan Jiles scooped up the ball and rumbled 92-yards for the touchdown that gave Richards a 31-13 lead.

Jiles’ fumble-recovery touchdown proved huge as Batavia scored twice in the second half, including a Micah Coffey 12-yard touchdown pass to Michael Moffatt that cut the lead to 31-26 with 17 seconds to go.

Batavia failed to recover its own on-side kick try and Richards ran off the remaining 17 seconds to earn the road victory.

The North Stars’ defense scored the game’s first touchdown less the two minutes in.

Backed up to its own 5-yard line, Plainfield Central was forced to punt.

North blocked it and Carson Schmitt recovered it in the end zone.

North (1-1) broke the game open in the second quarter

by scoring on three successive possessions. Kurtz put the ball in the end zone all three times on runs of 37, 4 and 3 yards.

The senior scored his final touchdown on his longest run of the night. On the second play of the third quarter, Kurtz ran 54 yards for a score.

“I don’t think we played a perfect game, but I think offensively Kurtz is a special running back,” Pomazak said. “And the defense was able to do a decent job against a good offense.”

Running backs Nicholas Edlund and John LeGare completed the scoring for the North Stars. With 1:02 left

in the third quarter, Edlund scampered 22 yards for a TD. LeGare crossed the goal line on a 5-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Edlund’s score was set up by the defense. Mitchell Riggs intercepted Wildcats quarterback Matt Gurkes’ pass at the Wildcats’ 17-yard line and returned it 60 yards before being forced out of bounds.

The win helps North move past the sting of last week’s opening loss at Elk Grove in overtime.

The North Stars travel Friday to crosstown rival St. Charles East in both teams’ first Upstate Eight Conference River game.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North football team used a robust running game and stout defense to give first year coach Rob Pomazak his first victory in emphatic fashion, a 49-0 shellacking of Plainfield Central on Friday night.

Marmion’s Troop Marmion blanks Ottawa hopes to multitask Butler runs for 226 yards in St. Francis’ win at Michigan State PREP ROUNDUP

Alex Troop had to make one difficult decision when he chose Michigan State as his college baseball destination.

The Marmion senior is grateful he can keep his options open when it comes to another important matter – whether to turn his attention to pitching or hitting in college.

Troop, a 6-foot-4, left-handed pitcher and hitter from Batavia, committed to Michigan State about a week ago, he said, but only began circulating his decision the past couple days after notifying the schools that had recruited him.

Troop liked Michigan State from many standpoints, including the Spartans coaching staff’s willingness to give him a shot both on the mound and at first base.

“They made it very clear they want me as a two-way guy because they think both of my skill sets are not ones to drop at this point, and they think I can really compete at the college level both ways,” Troop said.

The ability to pitch and hit at the Division I level is a rarity, and Troop said he’s spoken to players who have cautioned him about how time-consuming it is to put in the work needed to succeed at both. Troop, though, thinks he could be an exception to the rule.

“Everyone always told me once you get to college you’ll probably just be a pitcher because pitching always has been I guess my strongsuit, but I’ve worked really hard at hitting, especially these last two years, and I really think I belong there as both,” Troop said.

Troop chose Michigan State over Cincinnati, Duke, Bradley, Central Michigan and High Point. He said the decision between the Spartans and Bearcats was “one of the hardest decisions of my life,” but he decided late one night and made his pledge the next morning.

“I slept pretty well because I was pretty set on Michigan State when I went to bed that night, and I didn’t have any change of heart when I woke

Michigan State’s baseball program has had some Tri-Cities flavor lately with St. Charles North products Ryan Richardson and Ryan Hudspeth both on the Spartans’ roster.

Troop might restore his three-sport status at Marmion this school year. He has golfed and played basketball for the Cadets in addition to playing baseball, but sat out his junior basketball season to focus on baseball. He said he’s considering a return to hoops this winter.

Big turnout for Kaligian dedication: Last week in this column I wrote about a planned memorial dedication for class of 2003 Geneva graduate Raymond Kaligian, a former Vikings baseball and golf standout who died in February in his hometown of Houston.

The event last Saturday – which included a bench being dedicated in his honor at Geneva’s baseball field – attracted an estimated crowd of more than 150 people, according to an email from his father, Ray. Among the numerous speakers at the event were Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns, Vikings coaches Bill Koehn (boys golf) and Matt Hahn (baseball) and former Geneva teammates Brian Knapp and Jeff Denning.

Both the Geneva boys golf and baseball programs have dedicated their seasons to Kaligian’s memory, and Kaligian’s No. 14 baseball jersey is being retired. A scholarship of $1,000 for each of the next 10 years to a University of Illinois-bound Geneva student is being established by the family.

OTTAWA – The Marmion football team blitzed Ottawa, 45-0, on Friday behind a balanced attack.

Marmion is off to its first 2-0 start since the 2010 team opened the season, 8-0, en route to a berth in the Class 6A state title game.

“We played very, very well,” Cadets coach Dan Thorpe said.

“The score is Brock Krueger not indicative of how good that Ottawa team is. We just played very well. Ran the ball, threw the ball, goal line stand right before half.”

Lucas Warren (68 yards, one touchdown) and Mike Montalbano (64 yards, one touchdown) keyed the Cadets’ running game. Quarterback Brock Krueger finished 7 for 11 for 158 yards and one touchdown.

“We had very solid execution on both sides of the ball,” Thorpe said, “and that led to a nice team win.”

St. Francis 43, Plainfield South 20: At Plainfield, St. Francis’ James Butler gouged Plainfield South for 226 rushing yards and four touchdowns before halftime, helping the Spartans move to 2-0.

“The kids really played well,” Spartans coach Greg Purnell said. “Butler had a great night, but the offensive line was terrific in front of him. We had a lot of guys that really kicked it up a notch tonight.”

St. Francis led, 33-14, at the half.

Stillman Valley 40, Burlington Central 0: At Stillman Valley, Central fell to 0-2 after a lopsided loss in a Big Northern Conference crossover.

Wheaton Academy 40, Noble Street Charter 8: At Wheaton College, Wheaton Academy erased memories of last week’s shutout loss at Westminster Christian (Mo.) by scoring six touchdowns to even its record at 1-1.

Scottie McLean led Wheaton Academy with eight rushes for 78 yards. Teammates Camden Meade, Nathan Lopez, Connor Kramer and John Gemmel had rushing touchdowns.

One of the highest-profile transfers affecting the local high school sports scene this school year came in softball, where Wisconsin recruit Angie Morrow transferred from Burlington Central to Kaneland. A junior pitcher, Morrow missed her sophomore season at Central after undergoing shoulder surgery in March. Morrow, who said she and her family are relocating to Elburn from Lily Lake, spoke with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about settling in at Kaneland and her recovery from what she called a “clean-up” procedure on her right shoulder. The following is an edited transcript:

How’s the adjustment been this school year with the move?

It’s been different, that’s for sure, but I’m really liking it.

Other than the people, what are some of the biggest differences you’ve noticed between the schools?

It’s definitely a little bigger than I’m used to because Burlington’s really small.

That’s probably the biggest change for me is there’s a lot more people, and I went from a block schedule to an eight-period class day.

Did you know some people at Kaneland coming in?

I knew one person, (Kaneland catcher) Paige Kuefler, and that’s about it.

Has [the transfer] been easier, harder or somewhere in between compared to what you thought?

Well it’s actually been a lot easier than I thought it would. Everyone’s really friendly there and I’ve already made a ton of friends,

I’d be leaving there. That was really hard for me.

And you guys had a heck of a team over there, too, right?

Yeah.

How long before this school year started did you know about the transfer?

Not very long. Almost only like two weeks before.

What’s the toughest thing about leaving Burlington? The softball program or something else?

Well mostly, yeah, the softball program and seniors

we beat them, but we didn’t get to play them last year became of the snow.

Are they on your schedule against this year?

They are.

What do you know about Kaneland’s prospects for being maybe at that same level or close to it?

Yeah, I think so. My coach now, coach [Brian Willis], is a really good coach, along with [assistant coach Mike Kuefler], so I’m really excited.

I know they’re not in the same conference but what kind of rivalry over the years have you detected between Kaneland and BC? I think there’s always been a little bit because Kaneland’s been a little bigger and I know my freshman year when we played them, it was a pretty big deal that

You already looking forward to that one?

Yeah, actually I am looking forward to it.

When do you get back to 100 percent or at least close to that?

St. Charles East graduate Tim Russell is the returning holder on field goals and extra-point attempts. In Illi-

nois’ 42-34 win over Southern Illinois last Saturday, Russell made the 2-point conversion by completing a pass to Matt Lacosse to put the Illini up, 25-7.

“Once we were in spread I saw that we got the matchup we wanted and just ran it like we practiced,” Russell told the Champaign News-Gazette. “It was exactly how we drew it up. We didn’t have to improv or anything. I just had to make the toss.”

Russell’s 2-point conversion was the third of his career (second passing). His other two came at Ohio State in 2012.

Kunert raced his Kings Express Chevy Legend at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He capped his season Aug. 23 with a second-place finish in the Feature Race and finished the 2013 season at Hawkeye Downs in second in the points championship, racing against Masters, Semi Pro, Pro and Young Lion. Kunert will race Friday and Sept. 14 in Erie, Penn., at the Legend Nationals at Erie Speedway. He will be in the Race of Champions representing Illinois in the Friday race. The National Championship race is the next day.

WASCO – Liberty Mutual Insurance presented a $2,500 check Aug. 24 to Wasco Baseball for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Spring 2013 Responsible Sports Community Grant.

The presentation coincided with Wasco’s opening day of the fall baseball season The presentation was held before the opening pitch of an Instructional League game between the Rays and the White Sox, made up of 6 and 7 year old boys and girls. The ceremony featured a live singing of the National Anthem and a fire truck from the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Wasco was among 15 youth sports organizations receiving the $2,500 Responsible Sports Community Grant after the winning organizations were announced June 19.

Wasco will use the grant for field improvements and to enhance the overall playing experience for participating youth athletes.

Liberty Mutual Insurance created the Responsible Sports Community Grant program in 2007 to give youth sports teams, clubs and school sports programs the chance to earn funds by rallying their communities to celebrate sportsmanship and a responsible sports environment.

Wasco community members showed their support for Wasco Baseball by participat-

ing in an online program at ResponsibleSports.com that guided them through various aspects of responsible youth sports coaching and parenting, including helping children set goals for the season and teaching athletes to represent the best of sportsmanship. Wasco Baseball’s high participation level earned them one of this year’s Responsible Sports Community Grants.

“We applaud Wasco Baseball and the surrounding community’s commitment to promoting an environment rich with sportsmanship and hope that this grant will continue to provide young athletes with positive sports experiences,” Julie Brassard, Liberty Mutual Insurance manager of sponsorships, said in a news release.

“We greatly appreciate the support that we received from our community and members in securing this reward on behalf of Wasco Baseball and our community,” Scott Buziecki of Wasco Baseball said in a news release. “Contributions like this one from Liberty Mutual Insurance make such a big difference in helping our program succeed.

This grant provided a simple, ‘out of the box’ solution for increasing the knowledge of our board members, coaches, and parents to all work together toward providing a positive, nurturing sports environment for our youth athletes.”

August rush I’m just gonna say it. Enough is enough with school beginning before Labor Day. Am I the only one who thinks this is nonsense?

Where I grew up, in upstate New York, we always started school after Labor Day. But here in the Chicago area, it seems school begins earlier and earlier every year.

This year, my kids went back Aug. 20. Next year, they start school on Aug. 19. My yoga teacher reminded me that they actually get out before Memorial Day, this school year. Wow. I looked it up. May 23, 2014, to be precise.

And next year (2015)? The 22nd.

I’ll say it again. Wow. “Have a nice summer, and don’t forget your winter coat,” she quipped, as we rolled up our yoga mats Wednesday morning.

That’s not such a stretch, if you consider how chilly May is.

Temperatures typically average in the 50s. And in Maine, where Noah attended school through first grade, it often snows in early May. But I digress.

In the Tri-Cities, temps tend to hit highs in the 80s during three months, June, July and August. You know, “summer.”

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose greedy. But I am annoyed. After all, in August, Mother Nature’s saying “Swim!” while everyone else says “Shop!” That just feels unnatural to me.

Perhaps that’s why I’m never really mentally ready for school to begin when it does.

I do manage to at least purchase school supplies and new sneakers for my kids, but beyond that, what’s the point? It’s still shorts weather, for Pete’s sake.

Until this week, it was hot. Really hot. Some schools in our area even canceled classes, or at least had half-days during the heat wave, but ours didn’t.

Batavia schools fortunately have air conditioning, but their buses don’t. Riding home in a hot tin can left Holly looking more flushed than a hard soccer game.

“Sometimes it’s hotter on the bus than it is outside,” she reported.

Whose big idea was it, anyhow, to have the kids get back to school so early? Oh, well; I’m

sure they had a good reason. But does that reason still exist?

Someone in my yoga class suggested it might have something to do with farming. (Or maybe that was daylight saving?)

Well, if the heat – and the mere fact that it’s still summer – aren’t reasons enough to begin school later, consider the lowly ragweed. I don’t have a clue what it looks like, but this stuff is brutal. My pharmacist schooled me on the fact that ragweed blooms like clockwork the 15th of every August. Which means that allergy-sufferers are, then, particularly miserable for a good two to three weeks, also like clockwork.

I don’t know how many suffer from allergies, but there are lots of us, kids and teachers included.

What teacher or child needs to be in school while they’re dealing with this nonsense, especially if they’re hardly sleeping at night because of congestion?

Some actually miss a few critical, early days when they feel particularly lousy and even feverish, while others tough it out at school, occasionally coughing up a lung from that darned post-nasal drip.

Hmmm, perhaps that’s why the schools always ask us to

supply so many boxes of Kleenex every year. You know, so the kids don’t have to wipe their noses on, well, whatever. August is too early for long sleeves, after all. And if they’re really desperate and resort to using antihistamines to deal with it? Well, even the “non-drowsy” formulas aren’t, really.

Start school after Labor Day and you won’t have this problem.

By this time, ragweed is past its prime and we’re at least getting a grip on our symptoms.

Some will argue that school needs to begin in August because so many lifeguards return to college.

Well, I think that’s silly, too.

Those kids should also be allowed to have real summers – summers that aren’t cut so short. Whatever the arguments for maintaining the status quo, there’s no question, adjustments would need to be made. But I think they’d be worth it. Some adults (oh no, not I) may be willing to cash in their summers, but why should our kids?

The Geneva History Center will host wine-making programs Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8, during the Festival of the Vine in Geneva.

For some people, September signals the end of the growing season. The days are getting shorter; the summer annuals are past their prime; and it is time to start thinking about fall garden chores.

But for me, September is all about looking forward and planning for next spring. Instead of being the end, autumn is just the beginning of my gardening year.

I have always loved this time of year. The days are still warm, the fall perennials are just starting to bloom, and the leaves on the trees have not yet started their downward drift.

This is the perfect time of year to transplant and divide perennials, to plant bulbs and to rejuvenate a tired lawn.

The University of Illinois Extension website has great advice on transplanting, bulb selection and lawn care at www.extension.uiuc.edu.

As I take stock of my flowerbeds to see where they have become overcrowded or where I want to try new plant combinations, I also check for diseases and environmental problems and make plans for the changes that are needed.

The key to success in fall planting is timing. Complete the task during September while the soil is still warm enough to promote good root growth and the plant has enough time to establish itself in its new home before winter.

An extra layer of mulch will provide extra protection for them during the winter.

Adding bulbs is a task that yields wonderful results in the spring. While transplanting perennials or adding new plants I like to throw in a few bulbs to add spring interest. Daffodils are a favorite, but there are so many others to choose – tulips of all sizes, hyacinth, and crocuses to name a few.

They are a welcome sight after a long winter, but their beauty can only be enjoyed if they are planted in the fall after the soil has cooled a bit, but before the first hard freeze.

I use Thanksgiving as my deadline.

The lawn is an important element to the garden – it

frames the flowerbeds. Northern Illinois lawns are usually a combination of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass.

These cool season grasses grow rapidly in spring and fall. The best time to fertilize is around Labor Day with N-P-K ratios of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. Follow label instructions for application rates.

I am making big changes in my garden this year because I lost a large Ash tree to EAB (emerald ash borer). I am going to expand the sweep of lawn and plant a new border of sun-loving flowers along with some interesting new shrubs. I might even plant another tree.

There are so many possibilities that come to mind and this is the best time of the year to consider all of them while looking forward to a wonderful spring and summer season.

It’s the beginning of a new, improved garden.

‘Afternoon Delight’ about a soccer mom with a secret

By SEAN O’CONNELL Special to The Washington Post You know Rachel (Kathryn Hahn), or someone like her. At school, she’s the busy mother volunteering for social committees and fundraisers. At home, this loyal wife oversees the tidy schedules of son, Logan (Sawyer Ever), and husband, Jeff (Josh Radnor). When no one’s looking, she’s happy to sneak a cigarette or dish about her dormant sex life with her frank-talking girlfriends.

I’d bet my life savings Rachel has “50 Shades of Grey” and its provocative sequels on her Kindle.

But don’t assume that you understand Rachel. Writer-director Jill Soloway’s complicated indie dramedy “Afternoon Delight” hides a corrosive underbelly that threatens to shift the story in unexpected directions.

Lurking beneath the surface is an emotional discontent that’s threatening to swallow Rachel’s staid existence whole. She’s dismayed by the superficial minutia her peers on mommy blogs have embraced. The thought of intercourse with her shlubby spouse sends her into a panic. She’s unfulfilled and isn’t fully able to express why.

This sounds depressing. It isn’t. At least, not always. “Afternoon Delight” puts the typical suburban mother’s lifestyle under an uncomfortably

honest microscope, then documents the sporadically funny and occasionally sad results. The movie is cut from the same basic material that spawned the forthright and sexually explicit “Knocked Up” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” But it has a softer, darker, and more sympathetic view of its characters because of the feminine perspective provided

by Soloway (who took home a directing award from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year) .

“Delight” actually should be viewed as the female answer to the male-driven “Crazy Stupid Love,” in which Steve Carell played a marginalized family man who enlists a dangerous muse to help remind him how to live again. Rachel doesn’t encounter a dapper Ryan Gosling. (Too bad for her.) Instead, during an impromptu trip with close friends to a gentlemen’s club, she meets and sort of befriends McKenna (Juno Temple), a saucer-eyed topless dancer. In this impressionable stripper, Rachel recognizes all the rebellious qualities she’d rather see in herself. She begs the girl for guidance and gets more than she bargained for.

“Afternoon Delight” doesn’t break new ground when it comes to midlife-crisis analysis for the minivan set. Soloway steers clear of broad, wacky scenarios that easily could have steered “Delight” down more main-

stream avenues. When Rachel invites McKenna into her home as a live-in nanny, the movie asks complicated questions and waits for us to find our own answers.

But “Afternoon” is groundbreaking in its own specific way. How many female comedians working in contemporary Hollywood are asked to carry a dramedy? The list is far too short.

Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz used to do it regularly.

Kristen Wiig, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tina Fey currently come to mind.

Hahn’s name belongs in those same circles. An expressive and unfiltered performer, she’s usually cast as “one of the guys” in raunchy ensemble comedies like “Anchorman,” “Step Brothers” or “The Goods.” Earlier this year, she effortlessly stole scenes from Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis in “We’re the Millers,” and the second half of “Delight” proves she can take an emotional punch.

The movie’s a mixed bag, but Hahn makes the most of her opportunities.

Casting directors would be wise to take note.

• “Afternoon Delight” received two-and-a-half stars. The film is rated R for strong, sometimes graphic, sexual content, language and some drug use.

The film runs 93 minutes.

Dear Working Relationship: This may seem old-fashioned, but I’m not crazy about the idea of office romances. While I know they are not uncommon and it’s hard to fight mutual attraction, office romances are distracting.

When the pheromones are flying, it can be extremely difficult to concentrate on the tasks at hand.

And if it doesn’t work out, there can be tension, embarrassment and hard feelings in the aftermath, and that’s not good for business.

Medication reduces recurrence of atrial fibrillation Dear Doctor K: I went to my doctor after a few episodes of shortness of breath. It turned out to be atrial fibrillation. How is this condition treated?

Dear Reader: Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that causes a rapid and irregular heartbeat. In this condition, electrical signals in the heart become uncoordinated. As a result, the chambers of the heart stop pumping in a coordinated and efficient way. (I’ve put an illustration showing electrical signals in a healthy heart and in a heart affected by atrial fibrillation on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Atrial fibrillation doesn’t always cause symptoms, but most people who develop it can tell: The symptoms include palpitations, fainting, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath and chest pain.

There are different treatments to restore a normal heart rhythm when you are having atrial fibrillation. When a patient of mine first develops it, I always try medication first. It’s important to move quickly: The longer the heart is allowed to stay in atrial fibrillation, the harder it is to restore a normal heart rhythm.

Medicines often can restore a normal rhythm. When they don’t work, another treatment

This treatment delivers a small electrical shock to the chest. The shock can “reset” the heart to a normal rhythm.

Unfortunately, many patients eventually redevelop atrial fibrillation. A number of different medicines can reduce the risk that atrial fibrillation will recur.

Beta-blocker or antiarrhythmic drugs are used for this purpose.

However, none of them is perfect; sometimes the irregular heart rhythm returns anyway. And all of the medications can have side effects.

Another relatively new approach to reducing the risk that atrial fibrillation will recur is called “radiofrequency catheter ablation.” This procedure uses radio waves to destroy tissue in the heart that is triggering abnormal electrical rhythms. Another surgical procedure intentionally creates scars in the heart tissue; this blocks abnormal electrical signals from spreading throughout the heart.

These techniques can be quite effective, and they were not

available when I graduated from medical school. But they don’t always work to keep atrial fibrillation from returning, and they can cause side effects. So, I don’t consider them unless medicines haven’t worked to keep atrial fibrillation from returning.

If, despite treatment, your heart repeatedly slips back into atrial fibrillation, doctors may allow the heart to stay in atrial fibrillation. When this happens, doctors attempt to slow the heart rate to help the heart work more efficiently. Medicines used to slow heart rate include beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers and digoxin.

When someone remains in atrial fibrillation, he or she generally needs to take blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin or aspirin to reduce the risk of blood clots. The uncoordinated beating of the heart causes blood to pool and form clots. These clots can travel through the blood and lodge in an artery, causing a stroke (and other complications).

Blood thinners greatly reduce that risk.

The bridge played in a pair tournament can be somewhat artificial. It is no longer just trying to make or break a contract, but it is also working to score better than the other players with your cards. This can result in making close penalty doubles, especially when the opponents are vulnerable, or taking risks for overtricks.

This deal was originally played a few years ago. After West opened one spade and East responded one no-trump, South thought about a two-spade Michaels Cue-Bid, showing at least 5-5 in hearts and a minor.

But that would have forced his side to the three-level, and he had a sixth heart. So he reasonably overcalled two hearts.

When West doubled, though, South sensed that he was in a bad contract. (This would have gone down two or three, minus 500 or 800.) So South ran to three clubs. Then East, who had two wonderful aces, decided to try for the magic plus 200 on a partscore deal.

However, it is all right making sharp penalty doubles; you had also better know what to lead. Which card should West select?

There is an excellent guideline here. If your side has the balance of high-card power, the opponents will be trying to score tricks with their trumps.

So, the more rounds you can extract, the better. The only winning lead is a trump.

Suppose South takes it in his hand and plays his spade.

West wins and shifts to a low diamond to give his partner the lead for another round of trumps. In theory, nothing else works.
