The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Individuals enrolling for a minimum of 40 hours receive a complete orientation, structured training involving rotation through the activities of shovel excavation, screening of excavated soil for artifact recovery and washing of recovered artifacts.

Participants who successfully complete 40 or more hours will receive certificates documenting hours of training and supervised experience in historical archaeology.

Volunteers who can’t commit to 40 hours also are welcome and will receive informal orientations and participate in tasks needed during their hours of participation.

The program accepts volunteers of ages 14 to 17 with written parental permission.

Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Participants younger than 8 are not recommended.

Burns, city to ‘go orange’ for area food bank in Sept.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns is ready to break out a new orange tie. It’s an opportunity for Burns to show support for the Geneva-based Northern Illinois Food Bank as it prepares for activities related to Hunger Action Month.

According to a news release, food banks across the country are urging people to “go orange” to help raise awareness for their cause.

Burns said the city of Geneva will be on board with the campaign.

He is encouraging members of the city’s council to wear something orange this week.

And there will be an orange tint to the lights around city buildings.

While the campaign continues throughout the month of September, the food bank encourages everyone to wear orange on Thursday specifically.

Burns said Geneva is proud to partner with the food bank. He said that residents are facing “the ach-

Asked whether he thought people might be surprised to hear that there would be Geneva residents needing such help, he said that’s likely no longer the case.

Burns said the city will be displaying “as much orange as possible,” but that help is needed beyond September.

“The saddest part of all this is that while we focus our attention on the month of September, the need is year-round,” he said, adding it is a “12-month-a-year need.”

125 years of worship Sugar Grove United Methodist Church celebrates milestone If you go

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The first church to be established in Sugar Grove is celebrating 125 years of worship this weekend.

The Rev. Vickie Hadaway, pastor of the church, said the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church was consecrated in 1888, a year after a member of the church sold property to church leaders for $1.

Citing a newspaper article published Sept. 17, 1888, Hadaway said a large crowd turned out for the dedication ceremony despite heavy rains.

Trains ran on a special schedule between Aurora and Sugar Grove to accommodate for the ceremony, and people traveled from as far as Aurora and Rochelle, she said.

During the dedication, the newspaper article quoted one person as saying, “Sugar Grove is to be congratulated over its first church building.”

“So this was the first church in the metropolis of Sugar Grove,” Hadaway said.

Before the Sugar Grove location opened, most people would worship with the Sugar Grove Blackberry Goodwill Church in the mid-1800s, Hadaway said.

A group of people within the church decided they wanted to worship closer to home, and a group of women started going door to door, collecting money to erect a building.

The original building still stands at 176 Main St., where worshippers still gather each Sunday.

It’s still the “downtown country church where everyone knows your name,” Hadaway said.

The church also owns 40 acres of property at 4S633 Harder Road, which was purchased in 2001.

“We really would like to see it used by more people than just the church,” she said. “It’s in our care, but we really want the community to feel they could use it as they want.”

The property has a gazebo, access to bathrooms and features a walking path called “The Good Trail,” which was named after the Rev. Steve Good, who was pastor of the

church for 18 years before moving out of the area.

Along the trail are signs with questions and prayers for those who want to take a spiritual walk, Hadaway said.

To celebrate 125 years in Sugar Grove, the church is hosting a potluck and pig roast.

Hadaway said the public is welcome and that church members will supply the potluck dishes.

The Rev. John Smith, who was pastor from 1985 to 1994, plans to be in attendance,

Hadaway said.

Today, the church has 400 members who are active in giving back to the community, Hadaway said.

“It’s really important for us to, you know, be a presence in the community as far as mission work goes,” she said. “We do a lot of mission work and a lot of outreach to support the people in our community.”

Outreach includes working with a local dentist, Donald Fee, who matches funds raised by Sugar Grove United Methodist Church mem-

bers so he can perform free dental work.

Church members also are active in giving to the Hesed House in Aurora, Mutual Ground in Aurora and the Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove.

Church members also show their support during tough times by offering families a prayer quilt, Hadaway said.

When someone has a death in the family, for example, church members pass around a prayer quilt during a worship service, saying a prayer and tying a knot in the quilt, which is then consecrated and sent to the family.

“We feel like it’s important for us to make sure we’re out in our community and that we’re responding to the needs of people in our community, as well as throughout the world, and share what we have,” she said.

“The property, the church building – it’s all been given to us as a gift to share, so we feel it’s really important to make sure we’re doing that.”

Geneva to set hearing on combining panels

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen voted, 8-2, Tuesday to advance a proposal to combine the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals and Plan Commission into one.

The issue will be considered at a public hearing.

City Planner David DeGroot said the target date is Oct. 10 for the plan commission to conduct a public hearing on whether the city code should be amended to create the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Going to one board would create a more efficient process, DeGroot said, as sometimes a petitioner who goes to the plan commission also

requires a variation, adding weeks to a project as it goes from board to board.

In addition, the city’s zoning board has not met in 2½ years, DeGroot said.

DeGroot said staff identified 30 of 50 past cases that would have moved forward more efficiently if the two boards were one.

Last week, ZBA Chairman Arthur Kaindl objected to creating one board, blaming the lack of business for the zoning board on the economy.

And as they did at the Committee of the Whole last week, 1st Ward Alderman Charles Brown and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan both voted against advancing the issue to a public hearing.

Brown said two panels allows more people to volunteer for the city.

“The fact that business has dropped off – there is a good chance business will come back,” Brown said. “Properties are beginning to move.”

Brown and Flanagan also objected to the wording of the motion, saying it sounded like the policy already was changed.

But 3rd Ward Alderman Dawn Vogelsberg said when an issue comes to a public hearing, all sides are heard and transcripts are taken.

“And it still has to come back to us as final,” Vogelsberg said. “A public hearing is a perfect place to kick it off.”

Elburn board works out details of economic development commission

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village Board members hammered out details of a newly created economic development commission Tuesday night, working out the language that determines who would be eligible to serve.

The commission is being created to help promote business in the village. It would work as an advisory commission to the Village Board to help attract new businesses and retain current businesses.

The board did not confirm the seven appointments presented at Tuesday’s meeting because, as the ordinance had been written, some of the members would not have been eligible to serve.

For instance, the ordinance specified that members would have had to have been residents or business owners within the village, and at least one member didn’t meet that criteria.

Because the wording had to be altered, the board could

not approve the measure in the board meeting, but in the Committee of the Whole meeting that followed, Village Administrator Erin Willret proposed language that members be village residents and/or individuals having an economic interest within the Elburn Comprehensive Planning Area.

• Joe Kryszak, president of JDW Institutional Paper, who is active in the Elburn Lions Club.

• Patrick Leach, president of Control Plus Inc., and who is active in youth sports.

• CeCe Rocha of the National Bank & Trust and an active Chamber member.

• Annette Theobold, who runs Paisano’s and Eddie

Gaedel Pub and Grill in Elburn.

The members were chosen

by Village President Dave Anderson. Board members were in favor of those on the list. For example, when board member Ken Anderson said he would want those who were residents, board member Ethan Hastert said he wouldn’t want to eliminate anyone from the list.

“I don’t disagree with you, but looking at this list … it’s a pretty good list,” Hastert said.

“When you look at this group of individuals, I think they all have Elburn’s economic development in mind.”

Ken Anderson said that, he, too, liked those on the list.

But trustees debated on the language, with some suggesting that businesses should be able to select representatives.

Trustee Jeff Walter, however, stressed that individuals, not businesses, were to serve on the commission.

Board members appeared comfortable with Willret’s revised language, and they will vote on the appointments at their next meeting.

Batavia OKs selling land for gas station

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Speedway gas station is being proposed on six acres of city-owned land at the northeast corner of Wilson Street and Kirk Road.

Aldermen on Tuesday unanimously voted to approve a purchase agreement between the city of Batavia and Speedway, which wants to buy the land for $650,000.

The property, which is zoned for commercial use, was deeded to the city in November 2010.

If the city is successful in obtaining a “right-in only” access from Kirk Road north of Wilson Street, Speedway will pay the city an additional $25,000. The Kane County Board would have to approve the access.

The city would have to approve plans for a gas station. Speedway also plans to apply for a liquor license.

Currently, gas stations in Batavia are prohibited from selling alcohol.

“If this one is granted, we will have six more gas stations waiting in line for the

opportunity to serve liquor,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. “We have never allowed alcohol at gas stations to this point. I don’t know how you tell the rest of them that you can’t have it.”

There was a deed restriction on the land that prohibited selling it before Nov. 30.

But that restriction has lapsed, and city staff is recommending aldermen move ahead with selling the land.

“Staff feels that the highest and best use would be to sell the property and to get it back on the tax rolls as commercial property,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening has said.

The property generated about $30,000 in annual property tax revenues for all taxing bodies before it was filed as an exempt property, Buening said.

He said the best scenario would be for the land to be redeveloped with a gas station.

“Local trucks could benefit from such a facility on the way to the industrial parks to the north,” Buening has said.

Master winemaker Sergio Benavides of Aquaviva Winery will present “Wine 101: From Vine Cultivating to the Glass,” a 30-minute program at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at the center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva. Admission is $3 a person and includes an Aquaviva coupon.

The history center participated in the weeklong Swedish Days Festival in June with walking tacos and providing maps for self-guided historic tours.

Emma said that effort was successful, so the center was reaching out to connect with

the popular Festival of the Vine.

The center will be selling wine glasses for $10 each and ceramic wine stoppers for $15 that say, “Geneva, Ill.,” also tying in with the festival’s theme, Emma said.

“We are going totally wine here at the history center,” Emma said.

Presented by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Festival of the Vine includes art, entertainment food and wine, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

ANN R. HARMON Born: Jan. 16, 1923; in Spring Valley Died: Aug. 30, 2013; in DeKalb ELBURN – Ann R. Harmon, 90, of Elburn, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Pine Acres Rehab and Living Center, where she had made her home in recent years.

Ann was born Jan. 16, 1923, in Spring Valley, the daughter of James and Rose (Soeder) Lynch.

Ann grew up in areas surrounding Peru, Ill., and attended local schools.

She graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School.

After working locally for a time, Ann enlisted in Women’s Army Corp on Sept. 16, 1944. She served stateside taking care of her fellow wounded soldiers throughout the country.

After she was honorably discharged in Oct. 14, 1946, she attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing and graduated with the Class of 1950.

Ann was united in marriage to Thomas Leroy “Red” Harmon on May 19, 1951.

They first lived in rural Utica before moving to Elburn in 1955. In November 1998, sadness struck when Red passed away, but Ann continued to live and make memories in their Elburn home. In the ensuing years, as Ann’s healthcare needs changed, she lived in several locations.

Ann was a faithful member of St. Gall Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She and Red also were members of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Aurora.

Ann’s true gift was caring for others. Whether they were injured soldiers, family, neighbors, scraped knees on grandchildren or a broken heart, no one cared for you like Ann. Ann’s hands were rarely idle and when not caring for others, she loved to sew. Ann also loved to read anything she could get her hands on.

She was a hearty traveler making trips with Red to many destinations throughout the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa. Her favorite times were those spent reading to her children and grandchildren and being surrounded by friends and family.

She is survived by two children, Jim (Sahar) Harmon of Cairo and Leanne (Larry) Snyder of Maple Park; three grandchildren, Keith Snyder, Lisa Harmon and Elizabeth Harmon; three siblings, JamesLynch, Lois Humpage and William Lynch; and several nieces, nephews and a community of friends.

Above all else was Gary’s love for his family. He was the proudest father and grandfather you could find. Gary’s grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and Gary was the first one to support and cheer them on in all their activities. Superintendent responds to Richmond-Davis decision

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said Tuesday he is reserving his judgments and discussion about the Richmond-Davis decision until the hearing set for Sept. 11.

“It’s still in the judge’s hands,” he said.

Judge David Akemann issued a ruling Friday on the case, which challenged the legality of reconfiguring Davis and Richmond elementary schools into schools serving grades K-2 and 3-5, respectively.

Parents, who filed the lawsuit in 2011, alleged the district circumvented No Child Left Behind regulations when it did so.

Akemann ruled in favor of the parents.

He ordered the district to take corrective action in developing a revised School Improvement Plan and Cor-

Schlomann said he doesn’t know the reason for the court date.

“We’re not sure what those remaining issues are,” Schlomann said. “With that in mind, there could be ad-

Rob Swain, an attorney for the district, referred all questions for comment to the district.

Meanwhile, Schlomann said the district is in the process of creating a School Improvement Plan for Richmond and Davis, along with most of the district’s other schools.

Supplemental education services also are scheduled for Richmond, Schlomann said, referencing another element Akemann included in his orders.

Unless something changes Sept. 11, Schlomann said, Richmond and Davis will continue to stay together and operate with a focus on getting kids college- and career-ready.

Junior League to host Readers on the Run 5K MOOSEHEART – The Junior League of Kane and DuPage Counties Inc. is hosting its third annual Readers on the Run 5K and Kids Fun Run fundraiser Sept. 28 at Mooseheart Child City and School, which is near Batavia.

Proceeds support JLKD’s literacy and school readiness programs, which benefit local at-risk children.

Maple Park resident receives 4-H honor

Jean Fabrizius of Maple Park was one of 65 new inductees to the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame recognized during the 4-H family event Aug. 10 at the Illinois State Fair.

MAPLE PARK – Maple Park resident Jean Fabrizius said she thought of her father last month when she was recognized at the Illinois State Fair as one of the 65 new inductees to the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame.

“My dad was a 4-H leader of the Somonauk Haymakers when I was in it,” the 55-yearold said, noting he died in March. “I just really thought of him when I was standing on stage. I did right by Dad, I guess.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers and former staff. Fabrizius belongs to the ninth and largest class of inductees since the recognition began.

Fabrizius described the honor as “surreal.”

“I was just speechless when I heard I was being inducted into the Hall of Fame,” she said.

Fabrizius is not only a 4-H alumna, but she also is a longtime volunteer.

“I believe in 4-H very much. I think I will continue to be involved and support the organization.”

Jean Fabrizius Maple Park resident Her involvement as an adult began when her oldest child, who’s now 25, joined the Maple Park Lincoln Highway club at age 8, she said. Her other children went with her to the meetings, she said, noting the youngest would sit on her lap.

“We just all got involved as a family immediately,” Fabrizius said, “and we never looked back.”

Her youngest son recently finished his participation with 4-H, making this the first year the family hasn’t showed at the fair, she said.

But, she said, that doesn’t mean her involvement with the organization will end.

“I believe in 4-H very much,” Fabrizius said. “I think I will continue to be involved and support the organization.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia House Walk is set from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29.

The event is celebrating its seventh year, with tours including five homes and the original Batavia City Hall. Added to this year’s tea is a fine arts and artisan market.

The market will be an expansion of the existing monthly artisan market and will showcase a large selection of talent and unique specialty items for sale.

Those who wish to only tour the artisan market can do so for $5.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia code compliance officer Rhonda Klecz noticed a gate was off its hinges as she inspected a foreclosed home on Washington Street in Batavia recently.

“I’ll have to bring back some nails to fix it,” Klecz said.

Inspecting foreclosed homes is just one of her duties as the city’s code compliance officer. She also works part

time as North Aurora’s code enforcement officer.

At the home on Washington Street, she was checking out the condition of the structure.

“Nobody has been living in this house for about nine months,” Klecz said. “This property needs some help.”

As she was checking the garage door to make sure it was secure, she noticed a tree in the backyard had lost its leaves. She made a note of how to resolve that.

“It’s going to have to be cut down,” Klecz said. “I don’t want kids back here playing on it, or it falling on somebody’s property and hurting somebody.”

As she was inspecting the house, Cathy Blaeser, of Green Thumbs Brown Boots Landscape, was giving the shaggy looking grass next to the house a much-needed trim. Klecz contracted with the company to make sure

The city is aware of 46 homes currently in foreclosure in Batavia and 38 in North Aurora. Klecz also checks the doors on the house to make sure all are secure.

Klecz will need a court order to actually enter the house.

“I have to give the judge a list of reasons why I want to go in the house, such as if I think there is something hazardous in there,” she said.

After Klecz finished inspecting the house, she checked out an area underneath a building along the Fox River, which kids have been known to use as a hangout. Although she sees beer cans tossed into the crawl space, she suspects they might be from those who fish along the Fox River.

In her job, she said, every day is different.

Klecz said she has had to develop a thick skin as she goes about her duties. Residents might not be happy to see her.

“You’re not really anybody’s friend,” she said.

“You have to explain things to people and let them know why you are there. You offer up solutions. If they need more time, I’m always willing to work with people.”

She sees her job as more than just enforcing codes.

Instead, she said “it’s about helping people in the community.”

“You have to be creative and find ways to help people who might not have the funds or capability of coming into compliance,” she said.

Educating the public also is a big part of what she does.

Some might not be aware of the rules.

“Most of the time people aren’t aware they are violating the codes,” Klecz said. “We’re always trying to work with people. We’re always trying to gain voluntary compliance.”

Kaneland graduate helped rescue boy from sand dune

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – When 6-yearold Nathan Woessner was buried in a collapsed sand dune in Indiana on July 12, one of his rescuers was a 2009 Kaneland High School graduate, Alexandra Olson, formerly of Elburn.

Called the Mount Baldy Miracle, Michigan City firefighters moved some 400 tons of sand at the Indiana Dunes, ultimately saving the boy’s life.

The boy has recovered and is home from the hospital.

Olson, 22, who just graduated from Valparaiso University, was there on an internship with the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore.

“She was one of the first people there, digging with her hands,” said her father, Steve Olson of Elburn.

“I’m extremely proud. We couldn’t be more proud that she helped rescue a little kid.

That is the way you want to raise your kids.”

For her part, Olson said she could not comment about her role in the rescue because of her position working with a federal agency.

8POLICE REPORTS • A man, of the 1100 block of Blackberry Creek Drive, Elburn, told police on Monday, Aug. 19, someone had stolen his bicycle from the bike rack at the Elburn Metra station on Keslinger Road. The bicycle was described as a 7-year-old gray and silver 26-inch Rincon model valued at less than $500.

• An owner of a plumbing business in the 600 block of Thryselius Drive, Elburn, told police on Wednesday, Aug. 21, that someone had damaged a window adjacent to a service entry door at the business. He said the damage may have occurred up to a week prior.

• An assistant principal at Harter Middle School in Sugar

Grove told police on Tuesday, Aug. 20, that someone had broken into a vending machine outside the boys locker room.

Police determined that no money or beverages were taken from the machine.

• A man, 37, of the 1200 block of Hall Street, Sugar Grove, told police on Sunday, Aug. 25, that someone had broken into a house he had under construction in the 1500 block of Denny Street. He said the burglars had taken about $2,000 worth of copper wire from the construction site. Police said burglars gained access by prying open a door leading into the home’s garage.

• Police are investigating a fight that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 25, in the 0-100 block of Sugar Lane. They said two men, including a 40-year-old of Carol Stream, and a 55-year-old of Sugar Lane, Sugar Grove, told police they were outside an apartment when a third man, 31, of Sugar Grove, approached them and struck up a conversation with them. They invited the man into the apartment for drinks, they said. At some point, they alleged the third man stood up and punched the Carol Stream man in the face, causing his nose to bleed. They told police they had “escorted” the other man outside. Police said when they arrived, they found the third man seated outside, covered in blood, with one eye swollen shut. That man was transported to the hospital.

The men told police the man suffered his injuries when he fell after they pushed him out of their apartment. Police said no charges have been filed, and they are continuing their investigation.

Another View: NFL settlement doesn’t show how dangerous football

By DANIEL ENGBER Slate The National Football League reached a settlement Thursday in the combined lawsuits of 4,500 former players. The NFL will pay out up to $766 million (plus legal fees) to help retirees whose brains were damaged by concussions.

That’s a good deal for league brass, who will not admit any liability or negligence.

If the case had moved ahead, they might have faced several billion dollars’ worth of damages and a longer run of bad publicity. Worse, they would have been forced to put a huge library of internal documents on the record.

The settlement looks like a solid deal for the plaintiffs, too. The terms apply to every retiree who presents “medical evidence of severe cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer’s or ALS,” or to those players’ families. If I’m reading that correctly, the athletes won’t have to prove that any of their disabilities came specifically from trauma suffered while in the pros. Since these guys all played football in high school and college – and got hit in the head over and over again along the way – the requirement for specific harm would have posed a major obstacle in court.

If you’re not a party to the lawsuit, though, Thursday’s announcement hardly has the same appeal.

According to the mediator, the NFL and former players reached a “historic” deal to “promote safety for players at all levels of football.”

That simply isn’t true. Concussion litigation that ends here won’t help resolve the questions that affect players at every stage of their careers. Exactly how much disability do concussions cause? Can the game be made much safer? A jumbo payout to retirees doesn’t get us

any closer to the answers.

Then there’s the problem of how the money will be distributed. The league plans to set up a fund of $675 million, to be distributed to anyone with signs of disability. Neurologists use simple screening tests to figure out whether patients have dementia but rarely check to see who might be hamming up their symptoms. According to a 2002 survey, neuropsychologists suspected chicanery in about 39 percent of patients who reported “mild head injuries.”

It’s unclear whether the NFL will demand any double-checks, but I’m guessing it won’t. If you’re trying to avoid negative publicity, you don’t want to start calling anyone a faker.

A wide net will at least ensure that every player who is truly suffering receives his compensation.

But the imprecision of diagnosis means that even with all this money changing hands, we’ll still have no idea how prevalent these disabilities really are.

In the past few years, the NFL has disbursed more than $100 million on concussion research, and the Player’s Association has been spending money, too. Still, it’s troubling that as part of its final deal with plaintiffs, the league set aside just $10 million more for purposes of “research and education” – and not all of it will go toward doing science. According to the settlement, that fund will also pay for outreach projects, such as one promoting “safety initiatives in youth football.”

In light of what we know – and don’t know – about concussions, these are almost guaranteed to be a waste of money. You can’t promote “safety” in football, youth or otherwise, until you understand – scientifically – how dangerous it really is.

Before the ink was even dry on the decision, several states rushed to implement racially discriminatory anti-voter laws, including several states where the League of Women Voters had previously succeeded in blocking voter restrictions in the courts and state legislatures. Sadly, this is only the beginning. Without a strong VRA, our ability to fight off anti-voter legislation and keep our elections free, fair and accessible is significantly weakened.

As we hit the 48th anniversary of this historic civil rights legislation, the VRA

remains an essential protection against the thinly veiled discrimination that still threatens Americans’ right to vote. Congress needs to move swiftly to overcome this decision and restore the effectiveness of the VRA. The Shelby decision is a call to action for all who believe all Americans should have fair and equal access to the ballot. Now is the time to contact your member of Congress and tell him or her to repair the VRA before any more damage is done.

Central comebacks clip Kaneland

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – The Kaneland girls volleyball team carved out big leads in three straight games against Burlington Central but only was able to hang on to one of them, as the Rockets sent the Knights home shaking their heads about the ones that got away.

Central rallied from eightpoint deficits in both the first and third games Tuesday in the Rockets’ 25-22, 13-25, 26-24 thriller in the meeting of the nonconference rivals.

Veteran Rockets coach Marv Leavitt has seen his share of odd matches, enough to understand momentum in high school volleyball is no joke.

“I know this game is a game of momentum and it’s a game of runs so I know you can come back from that,” Leavitt said.

“You just try to focus your girls on the next point and just not try to catch up in one play the seven points that you’re down.

Just get back to the basics. Pass well, serve well, and then eventually you’re going to get back in the game.”

The end of Game 3 came down to the power of Kane-

land’s Ellie Dunn against the craftiness of Central’s Lauren Wiltsie, and on this night, finesse prevailed, perhaps aided by a bit of luck.

With the score tied 23-all, Wiltsie – with her back to the net – bumped over a defensive-minded shot that found an unattended spot to give the Rockets a 24-23 edge.

“I didn’t expect to get a kill – I just hoped, and got it over,” Wiltsie said. “Just maybe a short, little pass just to get it in play, keep it in play. I’m so happy I was able to get a kill. It changed the momentum of the game.”

Dunn – who pounded kills for Kaneland’s 22nd, 23rd and 24th points – tied the match 24all, but Wiltsie then feathered a crosscourt set-kill that landed in Kaneland’s front row to give the Rockets (2-0) the lead for good at 25-24. One Kaneland hitting error later, and the Rockets secured the improbable win.

Wiltsie, a junior, is a threeyear varsity player. She led Central with nine kills.

“She’s just a creative player,” Leavitt said. “She understands the game. She finds the open spots, no matter what it is, whether she has to hit hard or

just tip the ball, it doesn’t matter. We’ve been holding her out in the back row because she’s had some knee problems, trying to rest her a little bit, but we needed her today to play all the way around.”

First-year Kaneland coach Kerri McCastland said, despite the squandered leads, the Knights (3-2) are demonstrating early-season progress.

“It’s hard to teach your team how to be out of system, and those balls at the end were just all out of system,” McCastland said. “Whoever was there, was there and whoever wasn’t, wasn’t.

“They’re going to have to know each other better. My team is very young. They’ve been together nine days with a head coach that was there one day before the dead period [in the offseason]. Give them a minute.”

Kaneland led 14-6 in the third game when, just as she did in the first game, Rockets libero Allie O’Reilly (26 digs) helped lead her team back at the service line, drawing Central to within 14-12 on an ace.

A Wiltsie kill later made it 22-21 Central, and she wasn’t through with the crowd-pleasing drama.

“Where most teams would break down, we stay together and push through it and compete,” Wiltsie said. “I’m really glad. I’m proud of my team.”

Central trailed, 13-5, in Game 1 before O’Reilly’s serving slashed the Knights’ lead to one point. One of Dunn’s match-high 12 kills temporarily stemmed the tide.

Junior Maddy Barry had 14 assists for Central, which impressed Leavitt with strong team defense.

Anna Senese added 10 service points and six kills while Jenny Lubic notched 18 assists for Kaneland.

Leavitt said he expected longtime former Kaneland coach Todd Weimer to provide the opposition, not knowing that Weimer stepped down during the summer and was replaced by McCastland.

“I said is ‘Todd coming in late or what?’ and then I realized Todd’s not coming,” Leavitt said. “I talked to [McCastland] a little bit, but they have a really good team. ... They have several good players, and when you have a dominant hitter like [Dunn] and a good setter like [Lubic], you’re always going to be tough.”

Why he was selected: Started the season with seven catches for 168 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions vs. Oswego of times mentally you think ‘I can’t do this’ but you just have to keep going and have faith in your training over the summer and offseason that you can do it, and you’ve got to do it for your team. I did all the [conditioning] stuff with the team I have to do and a lot of us went to ProForce and did a lot of stuff there, and that got me in really good shape.

You guys just beat one really good team, but it only keep getting tougher coming up, right?

Of course I don’t know what everyone else has but I think we have one of the hardest first three games in the state with Oswego, Wheaton North and Batavia, but you can’t think of that and being unlucky and anything like.

You just have to take it on with confidence and hopefully [we get a win Friday], and if not, you just look at it and try to build on it and keep moving on to the next one.

If you had to have one teammate help you with some tough homework, who would it be, and why?

Man, that’s tough. I’d probably go with Quinn Einck. He’s a senior starter on our line and he’s a renaissance man as our coach calls him. He’s a musician, he’s a smart kid. I have complete faith in him that no matter what obstacle I was in, he could help me get out of it.

AURORA – The Aurora Christian football team had to wait four extra days to play its first game of the 2013 season. Once the Eagles hit the field Tuesday night, they wasted no time in taking control against Chicago DuSable.

Aurora Christian tallied 57 points in the first half, including scoring four touchdowns in less than a minute in the second quarter, on its way to a 64-0 victory over the Panthers.

The joy of the win was dampened by the play that ended the game.

Playing under a running clock, DuSable running back Emmanuel Williams injured his leg while being tackled by Eagle defenders late in the third quarter. The injury was severe enough that Williams was taken off the field on a stretcher and put into a waiting ambulance.

Game officials decided to call the game at that point.

“We were just trying to get through it and when the kid got hurt, I could tell that the (DuSable) coach was ready to go,” Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe.

“I said let’s just get this thing done with. We don’t need to play anymore.”

A 10-yard pass from Eagles quarterback Austin Bray to Noah Roberts 33 seconds into the second quarter started the 28 point scoring barrage.

Aurora Christian was already leading, 14-0.

The Eagles’ Legend Smith intercepted Lonzell Easton’s pass at the Panthers’ 26-yard line on DuSable’s first play from scrimmage on their next possession. The senior returned it for a TD at 11:11 of the second frame.

The Eagles recovered a fumble

on Du-Sable’s 2-yard line on the Panthers’ next series. Bray connected again with Roberts for a score 18 seconds later.

Brandon Walgren completed the scoring binge by intercepting another DuSable pass and returning it 20 yards for a fourth TD at the 10:36 mark of the quarter.

Aurora Christian added two more scores late in the second quarter. The fifth touchdown was scored on a 5 yard run by Smith (five carries for 83 yards). The Eagles made a two-point conversion on the play when Bray, who was the holder for kicker Nick Van Gilse, fumbled the snap and ran the ball in.

Van Gilse was a perfect 7 for 7 on his kicks.

The last touchdown of the half came on the Eagles’ third interception of the night, a 20-yard return by Daniel Brown.

“We caught fire defensively and scored three on defense,” Beebe said.

“That’s got to make my brother (defensive coordinator David Beebe) happy.”

The Eagles scored their last touchdown on their only play from scrimmage in the second half. Kimani Mobley scampered 26 yard for the TD. The Eagles relied heavily on the arm of Bray. The junior QB completed 11 of 18 passes for 129 yards and four touchdowns.

“He really threw a nice ball. He throws it hard,” Beebe said. ”I’d like to improve on the 11 of 18 but a lot of those weren’t his fault. We will address that.”

The game originally was scheduled to be played Friday but was postponed by lightning. Beebe was not concerned about having his team needing to return to the field so quickly on Friday for the Eagles’ next game

Tell me about the chemistry you have with [Geneva QB Daniel Santacaterina].

Yeah, me and Daniel have been friends since fifth grade when we started playing travel basketball together. I didn’t play football at that time but he and his family really encouraged me to play football and I did, and ever since we’ve been playing together. … Me and him were throwing just about every day [after Santacaterina recovered from his broken clavicle]. We really started to click and get our timing down, and we really got after it.

It looks like you’ll be playing a lot of offense and defense. What kind of conditioning challenge is that for you?

It’s a lot. I had to do that my freshman year and now. You just kind of push through. A lot

Temple, the first St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week in the new school year, recently reflected on Week 1 and looked ahead to the rest of the season with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab. Hollow win for ACC football The Aurora Central Catholic football team exited opening week injury-free and with a 1-0 record.

Ordinarily that would be cause for smiles and fist bumps, but the Chargers haven’t been in an especially cheerful mood the past few days. Even word Tuesday that the IHSA was granting ACC a forfeit win against Oostburg (Wis.) provided only a small measure of solace for ACC coach Brian Casey’s team.

“Obviously, I don’t think any coach would tell you a forfeit win, hey, it was awesome,” Casey said. “No, it’s not. It’s a total non-ideal situation, but unfortunately, that’s the hand we’re dealt so we have to find a way to make the best of the situation.”

Like all the other games around here that were supposed to be played Friday night, ACC’s game against visiting Oostburg was postponed by lightning. But unlike the rest of those games, a makeup date could not be negotiated.

Oostburg hailing from north of the border obviously complicated a potential reschedule, but Casey said ACC offered to reimburse the school hotel expenses to stay overnight or travel expenses to make a return trip Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Oostburg nixed that offer, Casey said.

A phone message left with Oostburg’s athletic department Tuesday was not returned.

“I feel like they did a disservice to our kids, no doubt, but I personally feel it was a disservice to theirs as well,” Casey said.

In a text message Tuesday afternoon, Casey said the IHSA let ACC know the game could be counted as a forfeit win considering ACC did everything it could to play the game.

If the game were not counted as a win – ACC would have been favorites to beat Oostburg – it would have put the Chargers in a hole in their quest for back-to-back playoff berths.

The forfeit ruling was welcome, just not a satisfying resolution in light of the months of work and anticipation that spill into a

“We work so hard for nine guaranteed days and this takes away one of them from them, so obviously I’m disappointed for the kids that they didn’t have the chance to compete in front of their family and friends for the season opener, of all things,” Casey said.

This was the second year of a two-year series with Oostburg after the Chargers won handily as the road team last year. Casey said ACC partnered with the out-of-state school because ACC was in scramble mode a couple years back when Chicago Senn pulled out of a planned series.

A football cliche holds that teams make their biggest strides from Week 1 to Week 2, which could put the Chargers at a disadvantage Saturday when ACC finally sees game action at Chicago Bogan.

On the other hand, the Chargers will have a surplus of pentup aggression which they’re prepared to unload, Casey said.

“By the time it’s time to open up that cage door on Saturday afternoon, we’ll be ready to go bananas,” Casey said.

Upon further review: Batavia senior Michael Moffatt’s 45yard touchdown grab Saturday against Glenbard North looked slick in real time.

It apparently looked even better on film to Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron, who Tuesday called Moffatt’s grab “one of the most amazing catches I’ve ever seen.”

Moffatt pinned the football to Glenbard North defensive back Robert Collier’s shoulder pad before reeling the ball in for a TD reception from quarterback Micah Coffey in the third quarter of the Bulldogs’ eventual 29-26 win over the Panthers.

The Bulldogs will look to cash in on home course advantage. They’re scheduled to host each of the other Tri-Cities teams this season.

Short drive, long day Going to school in a city doesn’t guarantee insider knowledge of each of its golf courses.

For proof, look no further than the St. Charles East girls’ score of 220 in Thursday’s dual loss to Naperville North at St. Charles Country Club.

“For many of them, it was the first time playing the course, and we couldn’t adjust to the speed of the greens,” Saints coach Rod Osborne said. “Putting was a major issue for the night, but hopefully they can learn from that.”

With just two seniors on the roster, Osborne expects growing pains at this point of the season. The key to success remains how quickly the Saints internalize them.

“We’re very young and inexperienced this year,” Osborne said. “The great thing is the young kids have a great, great attitude toward learning about the game.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – The Wheaton Academy girls volleyball team knocked off Batavia, 25-20, 29-27 on Tuesday in the Warriors’ season debut.

Sydney Vischer had nine kills and six service points, Sam Krill had five kills and eight service points and Sarah McClain dished 20 assists for the Warriors in what was described as a great defensive match by both teams.

The Bulldogs (5-3) dropped their home opener despite 18 assists and 11 digs from Batavia’s Audrey Faulhaber and 10 kills from Heather Meyer.

“We had opportunities to put the game away in both games but we just did not have the consistent offense like [Wheaton Academy] had,” Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne wrote. “They served us tough, and that did not help as well.”

St. Charles North 2, Addison Trail 0 (25-15, 25-9): At St. Charles, Taylor Krage had seven kills and Claire Anderson added five kills as North improved to 8-0 on the season. Sydney Wohlert (eight assists) and Alex Seavey (five digs) were also among North’s leaders.

Geneva 2, West Aurora 1 (2225, 25-20, 25-16): At Geneva, Kyley Thompson had nine kills and three blocks, Kelsey Wicinski notched 21 digs and Courtney Caruso added 10 assists as Geneva (3-0) rallied for the nonconference win.

CROSS COUNTRY Kaneland triangular: At Elburn Woods, Wheaton Academy won the boys varsity race while coming in second place in the girls varsity race in a meet that also included the host Knights and West Chicago.

Kaneland’s Brianna Bower won the 2.4 mile girls race in 15:14, but the Knights came in third as a team.

The Knights’ Nathaniel Kucera (17:15) finished second individually in the boys race on the 3-mile course as Kaneland (30) came close to the first-place Warriors (27).

We played at Rutgers. But it was nothing like HighPoint Solutions Stadium when I stepped on the field as a freshman.

Musick: So when you look at this upcoming first game…

Greene: Crazy.

Musick: … Are you ready to embrace it all over again?

Greene: It’s going to be a phenomenal moment for me in my life. It’s been a dream for me. Eight years ago, I was just dreaming about this day. And it’s finally going to be here. I’m fortunate to have my family, my mom, who I owe a lot of credit to, is going to be in attendance, as well as some of my other family members. For them to see that and for her to see that is going to be big. Because I know how her emotions are going to be. It’s going to be big.

Musick: Have you asked your teammates about what to expect?

Greene: I actually was just talking to my coach about it.

I’ve listened to what they say, but I’m going to get a little bit of one-on-one right now in the locker room. Ask around, ask a couple of the older guys that are in the linebacker room with me about what to expect and how they handled it their rookie year.

Musick: You’re not a little safety anymore, but if you see a Cincinnati Bengals lineman sprinting up field trying to pancake you…

Greene: (laughs) Nah. I’ve got to hit him. I’ve got to hit him.

I’m definitely not going to get pancaked. That’s the goal.

LAKE FOREST – Forgive Khaseem Greene if he experiences déjà vu this weekend.

Four years ago, Greene was a redshirt freshman at Rutgers waiting to play in his first college game against the Cincinnati Bearcats. This week, Greene is a Bears rookie waiting to play in his first NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

As the Bears’ fourth-round draft pick (No. 117 overall), Greene figures to play on special teams while providing depth at weak-side linebacker behind Lance Briggs. The Bears drafted Greene and fellow linebacker Jon Bostic with the long-term goal of replenishing a position that long has been a strength on the lakefront.

Greene, 24, is hungry to make his NFL debut. But he’s not hungry for pancakes (you’ll soon understand why).

Musick: I want to know about your first game as a college freshman. Did you have any idea what was going on?

Greene: (smiles) Yeah, I knew what was going on. I had redshirted, and basically what had happened is a couple of guys got hurt against Cincinnati. I believe it was 2009. New stadium, everything. A couple of guys went down, I went in.

I can remember being very nervous. I can remember saying to myself how big they were and how fast they were. And then I got pancaked on a screen play.

This is when I was [playing] safety. So here I am, a little safety, trying to play the screen, trying to take on a big linemen, and he just flat out pancaked me.

Musick: Is it fun to look back at that moment now?

Greene: Yeah, definitely.

It’s fun now looking back at it.

It wasn’t fun then, but it’s fun now.

Musick: What was your heart rate when you took the field for the first time? That crowd had to look huge compared with a few hundred people at a high school game.

Greene: Well, I was fortunate to go to what was considered a powerhouse where I’m from, so we had big crowds. [Editor’s

Season to be all about the kids Listen up, please, everybody because this is the last time I’m going to waste space on this. I’m the guy who somewhat famously said on the first night of the 2013 NFL College Draft about 20 seconds after the Bears chose Kyle Long that Phil Emery just blew that pick.

As I’ve already said a half dozen other times since that night, I WAS WRONG! You cannot preach over and over as I have over the past 30-plus years that it takes at least two years to evaluate a draft and then condemn a pick 20 seconds after it’s made.

This is important for two reasons. One is that, with all six draft choices and three undrafted rookie free agents making this year’s Bears roster, 2013 is going to very much be about the kids.

Secondly, I really like Kyle Long.

I am not on the Kyle for

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Canton bandwagon yet and I won’t be for some time. He hasn’t been near as dominant or outstanding to date as some media and way too many fans have tried to paint him.

But what he has shown is he’s an excellent NFL offensive line prospect, probably best-suited for left tackle rather than guard, and he definitely earned the start at guard against the Bengals. Nothing has been handed to him just because he’s the first-round pick.

What I am most pleased about for the Bears and their fans, though, is that Long appears to be an outstanding young man, the kind of guy you want in your locker room.

A rite of passage at Halas Hall is the rooks dress in the basement until the final roster is set. Labor Day was Long and the other rookies’ first day at the adult table, and Kyle was the proverbial kid in the candy store.

We visited for a few minutes with what started as some good natured smack about my failed prediction. Most kids would have gloated. Hell, I would have gloated. Long did not.

He spoke sincerely about how grateful he is for the chance he’s been given, the support he’s received and even in a bit of awe over how far he’s come so soon.

I hope he continues to improve and proves he can play, because I really like Kyle Long and I’m pretty sure I’m right this time when I say the Bears are lucky to have him.

As for the rest of the

kiddie corps, my best guess is Marquess Wilson and Jordan Mills most quickly will be the most productive. We just haven’t seen enough to know if Wilson will ever be more than a three or a four. But Brandon Marshall will most certainly still command double teams and Alshon Jeffery could be the most improved player on the team.

Defenses can only stalk so many targets and Wilson will be the beneficiary. Mills does things naturally that players like J’Marcus Webb can’t learn in three years. Whether he can handle the huge step up in competition will be an open question all year.

Jon Bostic is a nice looking prospect. But, unlike Long, he is only the starter because D.J. Williams can’t be. The Bears just need him to be adequate until Williams is ready. He’ll have all season to establish

himself before the Bears have to decide next spring whether or not they need to acquire competition for him or an upgrade in the middle.

There is reasonable debate over whether Khaseem Greene and Cornelius Washington actually earned their roster spots or got priority because of their draft status. J.T. Thomas and Cheta Ozougwu could mount a real debate.

It’s unlikely we’ll learn anything tangible about Michael Ford, Zach Minter or C.J. Wilson soon.

It’s a really good thing the Bears have deemed this many of their own rookies worth developing. Now, all we can do is check back in two years to see if they were right.

“Getaway,” starring Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez, was written by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker and directed by Courtney Solomon. The film is rated PG-13.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Ethan Hawke is a pretty good actor.

Look at the work he’s done in, say, the “Sunrise-Sunset-Midnight” trilogy or “Training Day” or “Gattaca.” Given the right material, this guy can shine. Too bad there’s nothing for him to put his talent around in “Getaway,” a mindless celebration of mayhem, without a purpose.

His co-star in the film is Selena Gomez, who is not a pretty good actor – ‘nuff said on that subject. Except maybe for the things she says in the movie, which we’ve got to blame on the guys who wrote this thing.

Gomez plays annoying poor little rich girl ... oh, wait, that’s right, we never find out her name. But here’s some of her dialogue, delivered in shrieky, whiny manner: “Look out! Look out!”

OK, let me cut her some slack. She’s saying these things while buckled into the passenger seat of a souped-up, custom-built, armored Shelby that’s being driven in maniacal style and at high speeds along highways and down side streets and through crowded shopping malls and across an ice skating rink by Brent Magna (Hawke).

The nameless kid is being held prisoner by Magna, but only after he stole her car (yeah, she’s a very rich girl) and she, big pistol in hand, tried to take it back from him. But ... oh, my, this gets complicated.

But, you see, Magna has no choice.

A voice on a phone has told him to steal the car, then the same voice, now on the car’s audio system, has mentioned that his wife has been taken captive, he’d better do certain tasks and follow all orders (one order is to hold the girl captive), or he’ll soon be a widower.

At which point the car’s video system (this is one intense car!) shows him a live feed of his screaming wife in a makeshift jail cell in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria? BULGARIA! Yeah, it’s explained, but the explanation makes about as much sense as a movie taking place at Christmas and featuring “Jingle Bell Rock” being released in August. I’ve got a feeling the movie wasn’t released early, but it’s been sitting around on a shelf for a year ... or two.

Here’s what we learn. Magna was once on the professional racing circuit, but things went wrong. So he and his wife moved to Bulgaria. The nameless kid is there because her wealthy banker

daddy is working there, and apparently telling her every single detail about banks and vaults and how they’re protected. The identity of the guy whose voice is in the car remains a mystery, as do his motives for putting Magna through his ridiculous series of “tasks.”

Yes, he was really ordered to drive across a crowded ice skating rink!

This all turns into a big car chase, sometimes also involving trucks and motorcycles and guns, along with some absurd and totally inexplicable explosions. It also gets hard to tell if he’s being chased by cops or by henchmen.

But all will be OK because nameless girl also happens to be a computer whiz (even though every bit of the plot involving computers turns out to be moot).

Hold on. I just remembered another piece of nameless girl’s dialogue, delivered quietly, without a hint of emotion, directly at Magna: “I really hate you.”

But that’s far from the film’s worst problem. It has a plot that, even at the end, makes no sense; it has chase scenes that never cause a feeling of peril, but just look and feel like a bunch of stunt drivers have gotten together; and it’s an “action film” that’s overly repetitive and quite boring ... and dumb.

Grandma wants to cut ties with daughter Teen encouraged Dear Abby: Two years ago one of my granddaughters was molested by her mother’s (my daughter’s) then-boyfriend, whom they were living with. When the girl’s father found out, he called the police and the man was arrested, tried and convicted.

Abby, while he was out on bail, my daughter married him! She doesn’t believe the molestation took place. If I were in her shoes, I would certainly believe my 8-yearold daughter over a boyfriend about something so damaging.

I cut off contact with this daughter, as did her sisters. She occasionally calls my husband (who is not her father) when she wants something, and I have received a few texts, which I ignore.

I sometimes feel guilty, but it angers me that she didn’t stand behind her daughter and has made no effort to see either of her girls over the past two years. Two hearing aids are usually better than one Dear Doctor K: I am losing my hearing, and my doctor wants me to get two hearing aids. Is this really necessary?

Dear Reader: If you’re like most people with hearing loss, it’s probably taken some time to accept that you need a hearing aid at all, let alone two. If you have hearing loss in only one ear and normal, or nearly normal, hearing in the other, then one hearing aid is all you need. But most people have hearing loss in both ears, especially when it’s age-related hearing loss. In that case, research and experience suggest that you’ll be more satisfied with two hearing aids.

When you have two hearing aids, you can take better advantage of the way the brain processes sound through what’s known as “binaural” hearing. With normal hearing, most sounds that we hear enter both of our ears. (There are exceptions. If you rub two fingers together just outside your right ear, virtually all of the sound from your fingers is being processed just by that ear.)

When a sound enters both of our ears, each ear sends its

The brain interprets the sound by processing the signals from both ears, and it does a better job of processing the sound when it’s getting signals from both. For example, the brain can pick out important signals, like voices, and interpret what those voices are saying even when there’s a lot of background noise.

If you’re wearing just one hearing aid, even though you have hearing loss in both ears, your brain may have a harder time distinguishing voices from other sounds in a noisy place. It may also be harder for the brain to identify the location of particular sounds. The brain normally does this by comparing the relative loudness and frequencies of the sound signals that are coming into both your ears, as well as how long it takes them to travel through the ears. But the brain can’t locate a sound as well if sound signals are

always louder through one ear.

Another advantage of wearing two hearing aids is that you can set each of them at a lower volume than if you wear just one. And lower volume means less feedback and distortion of the sounds.

If you’re still not sure that you want or need two hearing aids, ask your doctor if you can use two on a trial basis. Under this arrangement, you would be fitted with two hearing aids, and then, over a period of several weeks, you would decide whether you hear better with one or two. If not two, you should be able to return one of them.

Since I graduated from medical school, hearing aids have not only become better; they also have become much smaller. Many of my patients who needed hearing aids 30 years ago wouldn’t wear them because they were unsightly. Today, almost all of my patients who need hearing aids have them.

I’ve been tempted to move in with my older married sister, who has begged me to leave home and live with her and her husband.

Because I spend much of my free time studying, I get great grades.

Grades are important to me because I plan on going to college. I have hesitated to move because I’m afraid my grades would fall if I went to another school.

Nameless: I contacted a professional cello player and was told that you could wear tight thin rubber gloves when you are home and even when you are practicing on the instrument. That’s what he does because he had a habit of chewing his fingernails, making his hands an unsightly mess. He cured his habit in about a month.

While the cracking of knuckles can be an unpleasant sound, it does not cause knuckles to swell, and it does not lead to arthritis.

Commemorating Sept. 11 in Elburn KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – When Pat Schaefer got her first look at Paul Wdowicki’s 9/11 tribute garden in front of his Elburn home, she was impressed – so much so that she has become part of his team.

Wdowicki, 81, maintains the garden at his home at 405 N. Second St., Elburn, as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001. And each year, at 10 a.m. Sept. 11, officials from the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District conduct a ceremony. Among those expected to be in attendance this year will be the firefighters, as well as state Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville.

Schaefer will be there as well. The Elburn resident last year told Wdowicki that she would be honored if he would allow her to help maintain the display, and she helps pull weeds and will do work as needed.

“I can help make it more beautiful and make him more content with it and proud of it,” she said. “I know he is very proud of it.”

Wdowicki said he was touched by a large turnout at last year’s ceremony. It is becoming rare to find events commemorating 9/11 in the area, which Schaefer attributed to the attacks happening “too far away and too long ago.”

“People are going on with their lives,” she said. “There are some things we should just never forget.”

The display this year will include patches from a firefighter who was at the scene of the attacks in New York –

Wdowicki is grateful for what Schaefer does, calling her an “angel in disguise.” He also credits Scouts and the fire district’s Explorer Post, which assist in the maintenance of the garden. He invites all who are interested to come out and view the garden at any time.

Wdowicki said the help is increasingly important. Each year, he said, the task of maintaining the garden is more difficult as he grows older. He said he fell during the summer, and he has to be careful as he navigates around the display.

But he believes strongly

that the tribute is important.

He started the effort years ago.

He was a volunteer firefighter for 15 years in Glenview. When he moved to Elburn, he created the garden as a way to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. And he said that as years go by, there are fewer and fewer people who even pause to remember the terrorist attacks in the United States.

Wdowicki, however, has not forgotten. And the tradition lives on in Elburn.

Freshman Orientation was an event designed, planned, and conducted by the Peer Leadership group at KHS. Taking the lead on this event were the Peer Leader Advisors—students who had been members of the club for several years and who had sought leadership positions within its ranks.

When asked why they wanted to be involved, one peer leader, Steven Becker, said he felt it was “important to start at the bottom and make sure we’ve got a strong group going.” Another, Josh Rodriguez, said it helped him feel like he was “looking out for these guys and helping to set them on the right track.”

By all accounts the day was a huge success, and it served as a great way to welcome our Freshmen as part of the KHS family and introduce them to their new home.

The day consisted of a welcoming assembly, team building activities on the campus of KHS, lunch, a run through of their schedule, and a closing assembly complete with the KHS Marching band and the school song.
