Sculpture pays tribute to city’s history

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An iconic windmill, a Native American Potawatomi along with quarry limestone and colored glass to represent the Fox River were encompassed in a new bronze sculpture unveiled Sunday on the William J. Donovan Bridge in downtown Batavia.

The new sculpture, titled “A Look Back” by artists Oscar Leon and Jessica LoPresti, combines the elements of the city’s past with its natural history. It is the second of four sculptures planned for the bridge, Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

As the mayor, City Administrator Bill McGrath and Leon climbed on the tarpwrapped sculpture to pull off the cords, the crowd gathered on the sidewalk cheered, clapped and took photos.

LoPresti and Leon won a competition to be commissioned to create the sculpture for the city.

“This means so much to me,” said LoPresti, 37, of Chicago. “I have worked with many artists on sculptures.

I’ve been an assistant. I’ve done lots of paintings. But this is my first sculpture where I can say, ‘I am a part of this,’ in a major way.”

Leon, 33, of Highwood, said they took a lot of time to capture the true essence of the local history.

“For us to be able to capture something like this means a great deal,” Leon said. “Not only is it as opportunity for us as artists, but it’s really an opportunity for generations … to continue the conversation … for all those future generations.”

McGrath said the artists worked with local historians and windmill experts Bob and Francine Popeck for technical advice. They also traveled to the Potawatomi Cultural Center, Library and Museum in Forest County, Wis., to have the tribe’s elements represented accurately and with respect.

“They educated us on how they dressed and their way of life and the key areas of their culture,” Leon said.

One of the skills the Potawatomi prided themselves on was their hunting skills, so behind the man is a bow and quiver of arrows.

Schielke said the unveiling of the sculpture also commemorates Batavia’s 180th year of existence. Native Americans camped on the Fox River, and later the windmill industry used the river’s water power to build windmills, he said.

“This piece of art speaks very, very well of what the true history of Batavia was about from the very beginning to

modern day,” Schielke said. “I want to thank the artists for their innovative ideas ... giving people something to admire for, hopefully, generations to come.”

Schielke thanked Batavia residents and his fellow officials for their support for the project – as well as former House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, whose office used to be on River Street. Schielke said he asked Hastert for an additional $500,000 in federal funds when the bridge project ran short.

Because of the Batavia police and fire providing safety for Hastert during his years of being targeted by protesters, “He said, ‘I really owe the city of Batavia a big one,’” Schielke said. “He got us $1 million.

That is where the money came from to build the outlooks and to pay for the trails underneath the bridge on both sides.”

The sculpture cost $30,000 and was paid through tax incremental finance funds, officials said.

Two years ago, the theme of “Nature” was represented by the installation of “Nature’s Sounds of Harmony” by area resident Kai Schulte, Schielke said.

“When we redesigned the bridge, we had Lane Allen here to propose the idea that we should use art to tell people … how our community was,” Schielke said.

Schielke said the final two pieces, representing the themes “Science” and “Art” are under review.

Music fans fine-tune festival’s 37th year

ENEVA – Folk singer Amy Dixon-Kolar sang to a hushed crowd gathered under a tent by the Fox River in Geneva.

“The dancers are waltzing in the moonlight,” Dixon-Kolar sang. “Red sky morning.

Sunrise comes. They’re still swaying to the music. ... 25 years, the dancing goes on.”

The 37th Annual Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival was in full swing on its second day Monday, with masses of people all over Geneva’s Island Park playing music or enjoying the sounds or the storytellers, barn dancers or crafts.

Among them was a big, enthusiastic crowd gathered by Dixon-Kolar’s tent.

Dixon-Kolar said she wrote “Dancing Through the Storm” to honor her marriage, inspired by a storm that struck her family’s home in Maryland that destroyed trees and houses, but left standing a statue of dancers.

“I equated that to marriage,” Dixon-Kolar said.

“There’s a lot of storms out there, but we made it 26 years.

So I wrote [my husband] a waltz.”

Diane Wempie of West Chicago said she liked Dixon-Kolar so much she was thinking of asking the singer to perform at her wedding next year, when she will marry Andy Ryan of Naperville.

“She really touches the strings of my heart,” Wempie said. “She talked about being a couple and going through hard times and good times and marriage weathering the storms. ... Her song means so much, it would be lovely to have her sing at our wedding.”

The annual event is sponsored by the Fox Valley Folklore Society in cooperation with the Geneva Park District and the city of Geneva.

Festival volunteer Amie Fikar of Batavia said she estimated at least a few thousand people had come during the two days of the festival, Sunday and Monday.

“The clouds keep shading us, keeping the temperature down. No mosquitoes – which is always good – and a great turnout,” Fikar said. “Some come and stay, some leave and come back for the barn dance and ghost stories at night. Got a little bit for everyone.”

Anne Kuntz of Elburn said she comes every year.

“I love being by the river,” Kuntz said. “I love hearing good live music, and I love all the diversity of things to do and see with my family.”

Russell Altersohn of Geneva brought his folk guitar along.

“I like to listen to music and all the different folk musicians that come here every year,” Altersohn said. “I came with my friend. We brought our guitars. It’s easy. People come up and play and jam.”

Tommy Re, a fiddler who performs with the George Mattson Trio, said his group has performed for the folk fest for the past three years.

“We play old favorites.

Honky tonk music, show music,” Re said.

But when they’re finished performing, he and his wife like to walk around the festival.

“I like to see the people, hear the music and learn new things,” Re said.

Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice’s booth were hawking peace signs, anti-war bumper stickers and inviting discussion of the U.S. possibly getting involved in Syria’s civil war.

‘Block party’ bids farewell to summer

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Rianna Null, 10, of Batavia sat perfectly still as Lily the Clown applied the paint and powder that would transform her face into the visage of a tiger.

While Rianna and Lily were quiet and concentrated, around them bouncy houses were be bopping with scores of children inside, music of a bygone era was blasting, and crowds of people filled the Batavia Riverwalk.

It was all part of the city’s “Block Party” on Sunday, seen as the last party of the summer.

Food was at the ready from every front – from tacos to pizza – at the 1950s themed event.

Sim White of Warrenville was on a blanket with his wife and children having a dinner break during the festivities.

“I like the food,” White said, between bites of a tamale. “They have really good food.”

In the interest of full disclosure, White said he provided the bounce houses for the party – and stayed to enjoy.

Frank Bryant of Batavia stood in the shade of a tree to eat some pizza and do some people-watching.

“I like the pizza, the root beer and spending time with people from town,” Bryant said. “This is the last hurrah of summer.”

In his 22-page opinion and order, Akemann disagreed with the district’s position that its 2011 plan to separate the schools was a School Improvement Plan or Corrective Action Plan.

Because Richmond failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress standards four years in a row, the district was obligated to come up with a plan to address it.

That was the 2011 Plan to combine the schools and change the grade centers, according to Akemann’s decision.

“District personnel repeatedly denied that resolving the Richmond issue was a factor of the 2011 Plan,” Akemann wrote. “The court does not find this testimony to be credible.”

The judge found that the district was legally obligated to assist struggling students when it combined two schools into one school with two campuses.

The district argued that it “substantially” complied

with No Child Left Behind … except that the district “didn’t fill out the paperwork.”

Akemann noted that he found no court that accepted that explanation to relieve a district from its responsibility.

“The corrective action plan is … not for a facility but for groups and sub-groups of students,” according to Akemann’s decision. “Taking a group of students and moving them to another building does not remove the [No Child Left Behind] mandates.”

Board member Ed McNally was critical of Schlomann’s leadership in this issue. He estimated that fighting the parents on the lawsuit cost the district at least $225,000.

“It is a reflection on Schlomann – he was the one who walked us into disaster,” McNally said. “This is a reflection of his leadership. ...

And frankly, when you look at the scores that came out of Richmond-Davis for 2013, the gap has widened between

Richmond-Davis and the rest of the district. ... We are performing less well. That shows this plan was an abject failure.”

Spurling said McNally was entitled to his opinion of Schlomann, but he did not agree with it.

“His opinion is [as] just one board member,” Spurling said. “I have not heard from other board members nor anyone from the public. I do not find leadership at fault here.”

ST. CHARLES – A judge who ruled in favor of parents in the Richmond-Davis legal battle, ordered St. Charles School District 303 to take corrective action in developing a revised School Improvement Plan and Corrective Action Plan for children in the Davis-Richmond school buildings within six months.

Kane County Judge David Akemann also ordered the district to include choice and supplemental education services in accordance with No Child Left Behind. He set a status hearing on the case for Sept. 11.

Akemann issued his ruling late last week after a trial that ended last month.

Board president Steve Spurling said the main thing was the judge did not order the district to put the schools back the way they were.

“I guess for right now, that is a good thing,” Spurling said. “Certainly, we will direct the administration to do what [the] judge said.”

As to whether the district would appeal, Spurling said it would be up to the board.

Superintendent Don Schlomann said he was traveling and could not comment because he had not been able to read the decision, and also because of the upcoming court date.

“It would be premature for me to comment on any of this stuff until it is completed with the judge,” Schlomann said.

In 2011, 17 parents sued, alleging that District 303 acted illegally and in contradiction of Illinois School Code regulations to have Davis become a K-2 school and Richmond, a school for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. The number of plaintiffs was reduced to two during the course of the case.

Timothy Dwyer, the attorney for the parents, said district officials never looked at the root of the problem – getting extra help for a significant population of Hispanic students at Richmond, who were either first generation or immigrants.

Instead, Dwyer said the district created the twoschool plan to get around having to address Richmond’s lack of academic progress.

“The judge saw right through that,” Dwyer said.

“The corrective action plan is … not for a facility but for groups and sub-groups of students. Taking a group of students and moving them to another building does not remove the [No Child Left Behind] mandates.”

Race draws crowds

By ANDREW AZZO editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The racers looked focused. They all stared at the course in front of them, determined to sprint past traffic cones and circle back to cross the finish line and win the title: Toilet Bowl Challenge champions.

The ninth annual Toilet Bowl Challenge had racers sitting on decorated toilet bowls on wheels and teammates pushing them across the course Saturday at Maple Park Fun Fest.

But the exact premise of the race is what makes it so fun, spectators said.

People crowded Main Street and stood on rooftops to watch.

Maple Park resident Chad Ruff enjoyed the race so much that he said he’s thinking about entering next year.

“Where else but Maple Park can you have a toilet bowl race?” he said.

The winner of the race, Rigged Up, was a toilet bowl glued and taped to a skateboard.

Four teams participated in the race.

Winning the Pooh finished second, Dump Dynasty finished third and the Barbed Wire Betties, a roller derby team, received an honorable mention.

Dump Dynasty, a play on words of a reality TV show on A&E called “Duck Dynasty,” also took home the $100 prize for Best in Show.

Their toilet was covered in moss and had two ducks

and a stereo which played, “Sharp Dressed Man” by ZZ Top, the “Duck Dynasty” theme song.

The Dump Dynasty team also had the youngest participants.

Each of the boys, all under 12 years old, wore a long beard as part of their costumes.

Beth Miller, the mother of one of the racers and designer of the Dump Dynasty toilet, said she designed the toilet two weeks before the race.

“I used a whole lot of glue sticks,” she said.

Larry Stachura, designer of the Winning the Pooh toilet, spent two days on his design.

Stachura said half the fun of the Toilet Bowl Challenge is to come up with a theme.

“One year, we were Royal Flush, and we all dressed up as kings,” he said.

Stachura’s teammate, Jon Ausbury, said it was his fourth year racing. Ausbury wants his daughter to race next year.

“She’s a little shy, so I’ll have to force her into it,” he said.

Toilet Bowl Challenge is a race where people from adjoining towns congregate in Maple Park to watch the fun, Ruff said.

“You come out and have a good time and watch people push toilet bowls,” he said with a laugh.

Rigged Up received $100 for their win, Winning the Pooh received $75 and Duck Dynasty won $50.

Janet was the “neighborhood mom” giving her time to all her family and friends. Janet had the ability to shop for everyone, finding the “best deal,” and this gave her great joy. She always thought of others before herself and wanted everyone to be happy and get along.

RICHARD J. BURKART Died: Aug. 29, 2013 ST. CHARLES – Richard J. Burkart, 74, of St. Charles, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013.

He was the beloved husband of P. Candice; dear father of Constance and Kathleen, brother of James (JoAnne). He also was survived by his sister in-law, Ana

in Gränum, Blekinge, Sweden, and after completing his general education, he attended Sigtuna Folkhögskolan for one year. He then worked with the family-owned businesses which included a general store, a bakery and a taxi-service.

He served for one and a half years in the Swedish Armed Forces and was on active duty when victory was declared in Europe in June 1945.

Lennart immigrated to the United States in July 1954 and settled in St. Charles. After working various jobs in the Tri-Cities, he began working at the Gift Box in 1958. He married, helped raise two children and then in 1984, took over ownership of the business from its original owner.

In 1989, he acquired Cole Travel Service, which he ran as well, until the family decided to close the agency in June 2012.

He is survived by his loving children, Maria (Robert Cunningham) Jönsson of Los Alamos, N.M., and Hans (Jill Reipsa) Jönsson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and two sisters, Svea Jönsson of Karlshamn, Sweden, and Marianne (Birger) Martinsson of Bunkeflostrand, Sweden. Lennart also had many close friends who were considered part of his larger “extended” family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Ingrid.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be planned at a later date.

ST. CHARLES – Evelyn L. Begalka, 89, of St. Charles, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva.

She was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Minnesota, to Louis and Hilda Smith.

Mrs. Begalka graduated from Mt. Saint Mary Academy, where she played volleyball and ran track for her high school. She received her RN degree from Sherman Hospital School of Nursing in Elgin. She worked at Community Hospital in Geneva and for Valley Haven Nursing Home in St. Charles.

Mrs. Begalka is survived by two children, Michael Begalka and Barb Begalka, both of St. Charles; a nephew, Jim Emma of Geneva; and special friends, Kenny LaDue, Pat Moore and Pat Cromblehome.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents; and a sister, Irene Emma.

FREDRICK (RICK) THOMAS MANKOWSKI Born: May 7, 1948; in St. Charles Died: Aug. 29, 2013; in Batavia BATAVIA – Rick passed away peacefully at his home in Batavia on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. He was born May 7, 1948, in St. Charles, the son of Frank and Margene Mankowski.

Rick was a graduate of St. Charles High School, Class of 1967. He was a veteran and served in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army.

He was a hard worker and had a long career working for Eagle Concrete in Batavia. Since his retirement, Rick operated a handyman business. He loved traveling and had a passion for fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He used his many talents to help all those who needed him.

He would tackle any job with gusto and can-do attitude. He was a valuable man to have by your side in any instance.

Car show attracts those with a mission

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – To help keep his mind off a cancer diagnosis, South Elgin resident Keith Kmieciak spent months turning a stripped 2004 Ford Police Interceptor into a fully equipped squad car that serves as a memorial vehicle dedicated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Kmieciak – whose sons and son-in-law work in law enforcement – said the vehicle made its public debut at the Fourth of July parade in South Elgin.

In addition to collecting donations for the memorial fund, he raises money by selling copies of “Heroes Behind the Badge,” a documentary he plays on a 42-inch TV in the trunk.

Saturday, Kmieciak – whose last scan showed he is cancer-free – displayed the

vehicle at the seventh annual Charity Car and Motorcycle Show on Saturday at the Martin Family Farm in Elburn.

Although the show didn’t start until noon, morning rains affected the number of registered cars, said Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, who presented the event with Kendall County Sheriff Richard Randall.

Without the rain, Perez said, the show likely would have had double the turnout, which he placed at about 90.

Past shows have ranged from 85 to 246 cars, he said.

Perez, whose term ends in 2014, said he hopes the next sheriff continues the event.

The car show not only lets residents see members of law enforcement in a different light, he said, but it also draws the community together for a good cause.

Car show participant Ray Luttrell had his own goal Saturday.

The Sandwich resident said he lost his 22-year-old son, Matthew, to suicide in April and is talking to everyone he can, especially children, about suicide prevention.

“I don’t want a parent to

go through what me and my wife are going through,” he said. “It devastates the people around you.”

On Saturday, he propped a large, framed photograph of him and Matt against the 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 they restored together. On it, he attached a handwritten note that explained his loss and invited people to talk with him.

Early into the show, he said a dozen people had already talked with him and only one conversation was about his car. He gestured toward a group of children and said he saw them read his note.

“If I can just save one,” he said. “That’s why we go to the car shows.”

Lightning sparks two house fires

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Two houses caught fire about 20 minutes apart in Geneva on Friday evening when severe weather passed through the area, Geneva Fire Department officials said in a news release.

No injuries were reported.

The first fire was reported about 7:18 p.m. in the 900 block of Sunset Road.

The homeowner reportedly heard lightning strike, saw flames from the kitchen window and left through the front door to a neighbor’s home.

Officials reported that upon arrival, firefighters saw flames on the south side of the home along the wall of an attached garage.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and vented the house after learning its gas line was damaged, officials said.

Officials determined lightning either struck the supply line or a nearby tree, thus damaging the piping and igniting the escaping gas, according to the release.

Nicor Gas reportedly made temporary repairs to the damaged piping.

Damage to the house was limited to burnt siding and

some smoke damage to the interior, officials reported, noting no damage estimate was available Saturday.

Meanwhile, a second house fire was reported about 7:42 p.m. in the 1500 block of Keim Circle, where smoke and flames were visible from the roof and neighbors tried to control the blaze with a garden hose from the front yard, officials said.

Fire damage was limited to the roof, which was apparently struck by lightning, officials said, adding the second floor beneath the affected area sustained water damage.

Officials said no damage estimate was available and that firefighters spread protective salvage covers over furnishings on the first floor and basement.

The residents exited the house before firefighters arrived, officials said.

Units from Batavia, St. Charles, Elburn, Fermilab, North Aurora, South Elgin and West Chicago assisted the Geneva Fire Department.

Members of other fire departments Saturday – including Batavia, St. Charles, Elburn and Fox River & Countryside – said they received few, if any, storm-related calls Friday.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We need to work together To the Editor: All around us, there are people in recovery from substance-use disorders. They are contributing to our businesses, connecting with their families and giving back to the community. But if we want more people to join them on a path of recovery, we need to take action. Too many people are still unaware that prevention works and that these conditions can be treated, just like we treat other health disorders, such as diabetes and hypertension. We need to work together to make recovery the expectation.

As executive director of Renz Addiction Counseling Center, I have seen firsthand the benefits of recovery. Individuals who embrace recovery achieve improved mental and physical health, as well as stronger relationships and a sense of self-worth. Substance-use disorders do not discriminate – they affect people of all ethnicities, ages, genders, geographic regions and socioeconomic levels. In fact, in 2010, 2.6 million people in the United States ages 12 or older needed treatment

for an illicit drug or alcohol problem. Many of these individuals have since gone on to achieve healthy lifestyles, both physically and emotionally, and contribute in positive ways to their communities. They need the support of everyone to help them on their path of long-term recovery.

As Renz Center celebrates 52 years of community service this year, I encourage everyone who thinks they may have a substance-abuse problem to take steps toward sobriety. More fiscal fighting in Congress around the corner THE WASHINGTON POST Unless Congress acts, the U.S. government will hit its $16.7 trillion borrowing limit by mid-October. That’s the latest estimate from Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, delivered in a letter late last month to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. Coupled with the Sept. 30 expiration of the government’s authority to spend money on discretionary programs, Mr. Lew’s letter sets the stage for yet another round of Washington’s seemingly endless partisan wrangling over fiscal policy.

To date, no combination of policy necessity and deadline pressure has sufficed to force a “grand bargain” that would address the country’s longterm budgetary imbalances.

Will the latest threats – a

partial government shutdown if there’s no new spending bill; an even more damaging default if the debt ceiling isn’t raised – induce any better outcome in the handful of legislative days available after Congress reconvenes Monday?

In some ways, the impasse has worsened since Congress and President Barack Obama cobbled together a temporary fix to the “fiscal cliff” drama nine months ago. A promising series of meetings between Obama and a group of compromise-minded Republican senators fizzled.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and others on the GOP right launched a deeply mischievous campaign to “defund” Obamacare, the premise of which is that this is the last chance to stop the hated program and Republicans should

reject any spending bill that contains money for it – even if that means shutting down the government.

Never mind a Congressional Research Service paper that shows this would be futile, since Obamacare’s implementation does not require new discretionary spending authority.

The defunders make it more difficult for Boehner and other party leaders to maintain unity in their ranks, the necessary precondition for even a short-term budget bill. Still, the GOP has an overwhelming political interest in avoiding blame for a partial shutdown, so Boehner may be able to find the votes for a continuing resolution that keeps Washington operating for a couple of months, at or near current

spending levels. Boehner has provocatively forecast “a whale of a fight” over the debt limit, but assuming an extension can be arranged, that, plus a continuing resolution, would give Democrats and Republicans time to work on something a bit more permanent.

But what? Realists speak of a modest bargain to replace some across-the-board cuts to defense and domestic programs set in current law (the so-called sequester) for a couple of years. The price would be higher user fees (but not tax increases, which are anathema to Republicans) coupled with cuts to entitlements, such as farm programs (but not Social Security and Medicare, sacrosanct to Democrats). And then on to 2016!

We don’t doubt the realism of cramped ambition, but we do lament it. The broad outlines of a grand bargain are known to all – trims to Social Security and Medicare, combined with revenue-enhancing tax reform sufficient to set the federal deficit on a declining path in the medium to long term.

The sacrifice would be real but, for most Americans, modest, and certainly more modest than what later generations may face if we do nothing. So far, neither congressional Republicans nor Obama – despite his erstwhile vows to stop “kicking the can down the road” – has been willing to embrace this truth and act on it.

They still have a chance to change this fall, if they choose to take it.

They don’t know each season is special and to get the opportunity to be in a minor league baseball season or a major league baseball season is a gift,” Johnson said. “When the season’s over, you’re thankful for being able to do it, but you know it can be taken away from you, you know.

“When I was their age, I

didn’t think anything about it. Just, ‘OK. Be back next year.’ There’s just so many things I feel like we could [do]. It’s not finished, you know. And you feel like that every year. You should feel like that every year, because you’ve always got things to work on and get better at. I think that’s what makes it so hard to end the season. When I played, I was like, ‘Man, I wish I could have done this.’

It’s that competitiveness, and that’s what makes these players what they are.”

Five of them – Papaccio, infielder Gioskar Amaya,

outfielder Jose Dore and pitchers Tyler Skulina and Rob Zastryzny – will play in the instructional league that begins later this month.

The Cougars also will be well-represented in the higher-tier Arizona Fall League.

The Cubs named former Cougars outfielder Albert Almora and right-hander Armando Rivero to the Mesa Solar Sox roster last week.

Some Latin American teammates will play in parallel leagues in the Dominican Republic or Venezuela, as well, making for a busy offseason across the board.

GENEVA – Packing pandemonium overtook the Cougars’ clubhouse after Monday’s season finale against Peoria.

Second baseman Giuseppe Papaccio was the reason players cleared their lockers in a good mood, yet no one really patted his back. They only brushed past his duffel bag.

Papaccio coaxed a bases-loaded, game-ending walk from Chiefs reliever Dixon Llorens just the same, capping a trying season on a good note with a 5-4 victory.

“Yeah, it was pretty cool,” said Papaccio, who’ll spend time at his offseason home in New Jersey before beginning instructional league ball in Arizona later this month. “I figured it’d be a little cooler to get a hit, but just winning it was pretty nice. A fun way to go out.”

The Cougars (55-80 overall, 22-44 second half) treated a crowd of 6,899 to one last dose of drama in the club’s first season as a Class-A Cubs affiliate, which also saw the team set a single-season franchise record for losses.

Peoria (68-69, 29-40) rallied for a pair of game-tying runs in the ninth inning, sticking around after grabbing an early lead against rehabbing Cubs righty Scott Baker.

Forget those sequences or the two errors earlier in the afternoon, though. Cougars manager Mark Johnson had a bad feeling about Monday before the game even started.

He figures his players will shape the same bittersweet perspective on season finales, too, once they gain more

Maybe that’s why the Cougars never succumbed to a familiar last-day gimmick this time around. The Chiefs? Not so much.

“Guys were talking about doing the one-bat thing, with the whole team using the same bat and the person who breaks it – blah, blah, blah,” Papaccio said. “But nope.

Nothing special today.”

Papaccio and third baseman Jeimer Candelario both went 3 for 5 to spark a 13-hit attack. Every other starter had one hit, including center fielder Oliver Zapata, whose solo homer with one out in the second tied the game at 2-all.

Baker, in his sixth rehab start with the Cougars as he mends from April 2012 Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow, pitched 5⅔ innings of seven-hit, two-run ball. He was in line for the victory until Peoria’s late rally.

Fellow Cubs righty Rafael Dolis pitched to two batters in the seventh before leaving the game. Johnson said Dolis’ prognosis was unclear, but trainers appeared to be looking at the strained right forearm that has kept him out since late May. The Cubs still have a little less than a month left in their season, but the organization’s Midwest League farmhands have left for home, some with a grip on their manager’s wisdom.

“Sometimes these seasons are the best ones, because you take so much away from them,” infielder Brad Zapenas said, channeling a Johnson speech from last week. “I think that was really, really good what he said.”

Total attendance returned to more than 400,000 after last season’s hiatus, and the “See the Future” marketing slogan came to life for most of the season, as top prospects such as Albert Almora, Dan Vogelbach and Pierce Johnson spent at least half of 2013 in Cougars uniforms.

Gretzky watches son play for Cougars

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Wayne Gretzky finished his Labor Day weekend of baseball watching at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark seated behind a fan wearing a Mike Ditka Bears jersey.

Although some Chicagoans might stump for Da Coach, there’s no question No. 99 trumps No. 89 in the realm of North American sports icons.

On Monday, Gretzky and his wife, actress Janet Jones, weren’t ones to volunteer anything about Gretzky’s greatness as the National Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer. In town to watch their son, Cougars left fielder Trevor Gretzky, for a three-game series against Peoria, the couple happily blended in among the crowd in section 108.

Trevor Gretzky closed the season with a 1 for 4 day. On Sunday night, he hit his first professional home run with his parents cheering the middle of their five children.

“It’s a wonderful game and it’s a great sport and he works hard at it and he loves it,” Wayne Gretzky told the Kane County Chronicle.

“As parents, we’re enjoying watching him grow up and get to this level. Most importantly, he’s a really good young man and very polite and very respectful.”

The Gretzkys planned to travel to suburban St. Louis after Monday’s game to visit Jones’ 92-year-old mother.

Trevor Gretzky – who batted .306 in 14 games with the Cougars after his promotion from Short-A Boise late last month – was raised in Los Angeles, but speaks fondly of the family’s midwestern roots, much like his mother.

“Yeah, it feels comfortable,” Jones said.

Gretzky, 52, listed Tigers greats Mark Fidrych, Al Kaline and Mickey Lolich as favorite players during his youth and marveled that watching Rod Carew play during his first visit to Tiger Stadium “was the most amazing I had ever seen.”

“When I grew up as a kid, I was a big believer that during the hockey season, you play hockey,” Gretzky said. “When hockey’s over, you throw your hockey equipment in the basement, you play baseball or soccer or track.”

A four-time Stanley Cup winner who retired after the 1998-99 season, Gretzky still skates a few times a year, most often at his foundation’s annual fantasy camp in Las Vegas. There’s a rink near the family’s summer home

in Couer d’Alene, Idaho – former teammate Brett Hull lives next door to the Gretzkys – but it hardly sees The Great One’s shadow.

“You know, it’s one of those things were people say, ‘Do you miss the game?’ and I miss it immensely. I love the game, it’s the greatest game, everything I have in my life is because of hockey,” Gretzky said. “But I wasn’t good anymore.

“You know, I get a little bit leery of going out there and skating in front of people because, quite frankly, I don’t want to remember a 52-yearold Wayne Gretzky playing hockey. I don’t want to see a 52-year-old Wayne Gretzky playing hockey, but it’s still a great game.”

This weekend, a 52-yearold Wayne Gretzky watching baseball was the norm. The elder Gretzky relished seeing his 20-year-old son as the attraction.

Of course, that’s a more urgent task since classes started two weeks ago in many parts of the country.

Across the room, the Cougars’ studious set enjoys the input of the dean of balancing offseason academia with workout regimens. Infielder Brad Zapenas, drafted by the parent Cubs in the 42nd round in 2011 – weeks after the end of his junior year at Boston College – spent the past two falls finishing his degree.

In the heart of Red Sox Nation, Zapenas proudly differentiated himself, which paid off one day during a sports marketing course.

“I kept wearing Cubs gear and the teacher said, ‘Hey, are you a fan?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, no. I play,’ ” Zapenas said.

“It’s fun. Everything kind of changes. You kind of look at it totally different. Especially going back and not playing baseball there anymore.

School is totally different.”

Ultimately, though, it’s also secondary to these players’ career paths at this point.

With spring training getting underway in March, enrolling in live spring semester courses is not feasible. Escobar and Hamann mentioned looking into taking classes online.

“I’ll definitely be focused on school,” Escobar said, “but baseball is my job. I need to hit that hard.”

GENEVA – Cougars first baseman Rock Shoulders strutted into the clubhouse late Monday morning with an eye-catching accessory.

Some way or another, he had secured the head of venerable mascot Ozzie T. Cougar and proceeded to dance and pose for pictures with teammates.

On a season finale many players compared to the last day of school, here was Shoulders, the de facto class clown. His shenanigans amused many, and fittingly took place in front of the lockers of three Cougars about to resume the pursuit of their degrees.

Take this down, Carlos Escobar, Michael Hamann and Michael Heesch: You’re not liable to see this in higher education.

Escobar (health sciences, Nevada), Hamann (recreational business, Toledo) and Heesch (history, South Carolina-Beaufort) faced both separate and equal finalities as their teammates while packing their belongings. No more baseball, just more books.

“It’s definitely going to be different because, I mean, it’s like this is our family all summer. It’s going to definitely be different not seeing these guys, not going to the field every single day,” Escobar said. “Going to be going to a classroom, which is going to [stink]. But, yeah, it definitely has that kind of last-day environment.”

Escobar, a catcher, and Hamann, a right-handed reliever, locker next to one another in the back left corner of the clubhouse. Heesch, a left-hander who was shut down last month after reaching his innings limit, is just a few stalls down.

They’re returning to school voluntarily, but perhaps because they’re still college-aged and playing what forever will be called a kid’s game, have been sure to table any shop talk.

No one wants to be that guy, even in young adulthood.

Having Friday’s season-opening slate wiped out wasn’t easy for anybody, but St. Francis players had to deal with yet another disappointment when Saturday morning’s rescheduled game was then pushed back another day, to Sunday afternoon, because of more inclement weather.

The Spartans apparently took out their frustration on Riverside-Brookfield, romping to a 35-9 win in the long-awaited debut of Kuhn Memorial Stadium.

“You don’t know how mad I was feeling those two days,” St. Francis senior running back James Butler said. “It was hard, but we came out here to play.”

Butler is more accustomed to difficult waits than most.

He made his St. Francis debut after sitting out last year while abiding by IHSA transfer regulations following his transfer from Bartlett.

Butler scored a 34-yard touchdown on the Spartans’ opening drive and finished with 181 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

“It was a huge game for us because we beat them last year but I don’t know if anyone really gave us the credit we deserved last year,” Frazier said.

“They weren’t going to overlook us at all this year. They knew we were coming. They were going to want revenge for last year. It was just a huge game to start the season off against a great program, and we got a great win. The team played great.”

The game’s kickoff time was pushed back twice – from Friday night to Saturday afternoon because of a lightning storm and from 1 p.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Saturday to give the field more time to dry.

“Every time we came to the high school, when we came here [Friday night] we were ready to play, [Saturday morning] we were ready to play,” Moffatt said. “Everyone never really lost their game face, which I was proud of.

That was big for us to have to face adversity.”

Piron called the victory “a great measuring stick for our program,” and saluted the program’s loyal and resilient fans.

“What a great crowd, after a rainout, on Labor Day weekend to have a crowd come out like this. I mean, everybody could have left town on us, but they didn’t,” Piron said. “They stayed, and thank you. Thank you, Batavia.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia football team was on the verge of blowing out defending Class 8A state runner-up Glenbard North on Saturday, only to see the Panthers spring back to life and threaten to steal the game late.

Bulldogs junior Noah Frazier made sure that didn’t happen.

Frazier sacked Panthers quarterback Brett Gasiorowski on both third and fourth down of Glenbard North’s final possession with the Panthers in Batavia territory seeking to tie or take the lead, preserving Batavia’s 29-26 win at Bulldog Stadium.

Frazier’s second sack allowed the Bulldogs’ offense to take over at their own 41-yard line and eventually wind the final two minutes off the clock.

“This was a heck of a battle here,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said of a penalty-laden game that took more than three hours to complete. “You had two teams that sort of wore each other out at that point and time, someone’s got to make a play, and Noah Frazier, what a great job.

“Noah’s one of the hardest working, strongest young men in our high school. The things that he’s capable of doing will just become more and more evident as the year goes on.”

A versatile player – Piron said Frazier is capable of chipping in at linebacker, defensive end and offensively at tight end – Frazier thought late blitzing by the Bulldogs paid dividends.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE OSWEGO – A handful of frantic Oswego football fans shouted “PICK UP THE PACE!” at Panthers coaches as Saturday’s game against Geneva wound down.

It’s highly doubtful Vikings senior Pace Temple heard any of them, but he seemed to follow a warbled, broken-telephone command moments later.

“Pick it up, Pace” proved Temple’s mantra throughout a 29-27 win, namely when he snagged a game-sealing interception – his second pick of the night – with 1:52 to play.

Before that, Temple collected seven receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Vikings turn their season opener into what they later called a statement.

“Just all our team. We come out here, we fight together. It gets me. I feed off that, man,” Temple said. “All our leaders out there. Everybody out here.

This is fantastic. This vibe.

Our fans. You know, Geneva is back, and it just feels great.”

During the preseason and game week, veteran coach Rob Wicinski reiterated the need to gather “data” on a Vikings team that has only 14 seniors back from a 4-5 team.

He learned about the group’s resiliency many times over.

Other than Temple’s second interception, the display that most inspired a well-traveled Geneva crowd came with 4:19 to go.

One play after surrendering the lead for the first time all night, the Vikings responded with a bang – junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina’s 80-yard touchdown pass to senior Kyle Brown that provided the final margin.

Wild rally rings hollow after OT loss for St. Charles North: At Elk Grove Village, one miraculous minute of football by St. Charles North on Saturday at Haskell Stadium was not enough to offset 48-plus min-

utes with too many mistakes.

Elk Grove ruined the season opener for the North Stars and new coach Rob Pomazak by pulling out a 23-22 victory after North scored two touchdowns in the final 46 seconds of regulation to tie the game at 16.

On a day when North had so many penalties and turnovers that players and coaches alike had trouble keeping track of them all, a botched extra-point attempt in overtime decided the outcome.

“We just didn’t play well enough to win the game,” Pomazak said. “That’s a team we should beat, but I think we had over 17 penalties … maybe more. It’s hard to win a football game that way.”

Quick start boosts St. Charles East: At South Elgin, St. Charles East held off a fourth quarter surge by South Elgin to preserve a 35-27, season opening victory Saturday.

South Elgin pulled within one touchdown with 2:49 left

in the game, its third score of the quarter, on a 6-yard pass from quarterback Rob Cuda to wide receiver Tyler Christensen. The two-point conversion failed.

After East recovered the onside kick, the Saints faced a fourth-and-1 situation with 1:31 left on the clock. The Saints opted to go for the first down, and running back Ramon Lopez scampered 13 yards down the right sideline for the conversion.

Quarterback Jimmy Mitchell took a knee twice to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

Defense, youth shine for Kaneland in opening win: At Maple Park, a youth movement helped the Kaneland football team start its season with a win.

Sophomore linebacker Jake Gomes came up with key defensive stop in the fourth quarter to help preserve a 27-7 victory Saturday against Brooks.

Knights coach Tom Fedderly also was high on the play of defensive end and fellow sophomore Andrew Kray.

“The two sophomores were really good and we were wondering how they would react and we were really happy of what we saw with those two guys,” Fedderly said.

Marmion pounds way past Plainfield Central: At Aurora, muddy matinees make Marmion’s Mike Montalbano merry.

He appreciates the pageantry of Friday night football, but still can’t help grinning about days like Saturday.

Playing bruiser on both sides of the ball, Montalbano sported a blade of grass on his cheek to go with his smile after Marmion’s season-opening 25-7 victory against Plainfield Central.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM About 20 years ago, two antiques experts wrote a book titled “Fantasy Furniture.” It spawned a new style based on past ones. Pedestals shaped like blackamoors, chairs with seats that look like huge shells, Victorian furniture that seems to be made from plumbing pipes, and carved wooden chairs and tables that have full-size carved bears holding up tabletops or climbing on chair backs were pictured in the book.

Dogs are carved as figures beneath a Victorian-style table. Lifelike figures of women with flowing hair are part of Art Nouveau pieces. Furniture pieces of any age selected for the book were not traditional. The idea persists today. Modern artists have made tables that look like piles of books, and crouching men form the base of a modern cocktail table. Best-known of all is the work of Italian artist Piero Fornasetti, who made a cube-shaped table painted to look like a building, and an umbrella stand painted to look like a live cat sitting on a pile of books. Decorating magazines often show rooms with tables piled with real books to hold a lamp. A table made from a bronze life-size monkey sitting on a leather-bound book and holding another large book over his head sold recently. The 27-inch-high table adds humor to a room at a cost of $1,342. To add to the joke, the book held by the monkey is titled “History of Furniture.” *** Q: Awhile ago, Charlie Sheen appeared on “The Tonight Show” wearing Babe Ruth’s 1927 World Series ring. What is that ring worth, anyway?

A: Experts think that if the Babe’s 1927 World Series ring were put up for auction, it could sell for close to $500,000. But the “if” is a big one.

Sheen bought the ring in a private sale, and the ring’s history is murky.

At one time it was owned by Barry Halper (1939-2005), a well-known baseball collector. But no one knows exactly how Halper got the ring - and

some of the sports memorabilia he owned has been found to be fake. *** Q: I bought a porcelain child’s cup at an estate sale. It’s white with a band of blue and white rabbits and gold trim. It’s marked “Favorite Bavaria” and signed “Marie Frances, 1916.” I would like to know its value.

A: Your porcelain cup was made from an undecorated piece (a blank) by the Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factory of Bavaria, Germany, an area famous for porcelain production.

“Favorite Bavaria” was a mark used

by Hutschenreuther on pieces made for sale in the U.S. market. Some pieces also were marked “UNO.” Blanks were sold to professional art studios, china-painting schools and retail stores for amateur artists to buy and paint. Burley & Tyrrell Co. of Chicago was the U.S. importer of these items. Burley & Tyrrell also owned a decorating studio, but we don’t know if “Marie Frances” painted your cup there or someplace else.

Value of your cup: $50. *** Q: I recently discovered a 1939 World’s Fair silver souvenir spoon in my attic. The top of the handle has an embossed image of the fair’s EME Building (the engineering building), and the bowl has an etching of the Administration Building. It’s marked “Rogers Mfg. Co.” on the back. Is it worth much?

A: The 1939 New York World’s Fair is a favorite among World’s Fair collectors. Spoons like yours originally were sold in sets of 12 and picture various fair buildings. An individual spoon is not worth a lot.

We have seen single spoons selling for $15 to $40. *** Q: I would like to know the value of two brass grain probes I have. One is 62 1/2 inches long and the other is 50 1/2 inches long. They are marked “Burrows Equipment Company, Evanston, Illinois.” They came from an old feed mill that opened in 1886.

Members of my family worked there for years. The mill closed and was later destroyed in a fire.

A: Burrows Equipment Co. was founded by Parke W. Burrows in Evanston in 1947. It sold equipment for seed and grain farming. Grain probes are used to test samples of grain being brought to a grain elevator by truck, barge or other means. After Burrows died in 1979, the company was sold to Seedburo of Chicago.

That company is still in business in Des Plaines, Ill. Your grain probes were made between 1947 and 1979.

New brass grain probes sell today for more than $300 each. A 51-inch probe sells for $319, and a 63-inch probe for $336. Old ones are worth a little less. ***

In 1953 Hartland introduced a series of miniature military and Western figures depicting real and fictional American heroes, wranglers and gunfighters, many mounted on their horses. In good condition, each of these figures sells for about $50 to $350, and even more if they are in their original boxes. Rowling keeps us guessing, not just about who wrote “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” but also about who-done-it in her clever and thoroughly enjoyable detective novel. An engaging guessing game about the murderer’s identity, fueled by red herrings and lively characters, concludes with a satisfying surprise ending.

With an office in contemporary London, down-andout ex-veteran Strike, who nurses a painful war injury and a heart wounded in love, hangs on to his private detective agency less by a thread and more by dodging and weaving. Any minute what’s left of his material life is going to come crashing down.

A temp worker that Strike never asks for, Robin, shows up at his door at the same time as does John Bristow, a client who offers double pay. Bristow’s super-famous supermodel adopted sister, Lula Landry, has just died from a fall off her condo deck. The police say it’s suicide but Bristow insists it’s murder. He asks for Strike’s help.

Rowling, who published “The Cuckoo’s Calling” under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, allows herself the time to develop characters with a full slate of flaws, vulnerabilities and secrets.

privacy, quickly sets the stage for a story rooted in carefully guarded caring and concern. They make an affecting, effective and, we hope, enduring team.

Strike, shown to be thorough and honest about his work, believes at first that Lula Landry did jump off her balcony of her own accord.

It’s his relentless quest for details that leads him into the complex web of char-

acters that make up Lula’s day-to-day life. There’s her vile biological mother – a nasty character Rowling seems to delight in teasing us with. And there’s her dying adopted mother who needs Lula as a replacement for her beloved young son who died after plunging off a cliff and drowning. Lula is far more needed than she is loved.

Lula has a rock musician boyfriend, known for

his rages. She’s also being pursued by a famous rapper who moves into her building after writing songs about her. She’s bipolar and has a loyal homeless friend she befriended in a treatment facility. She also has close friends in the fashion industry.

Brother John is a puzzle as is her humorless and grim uncle Tony. More puzzling is the unpleasant woman that brother John seems to be courting.

Each character is distinct, with a voice that can only be theirs. And most of them have reasons, Strike comes to discover, to want Lula dead. Readers already know that character creation is one of Rowling’s great talents.

Strike slowly, systematically penetrates Lula’s world of hairdressers, clothing designers, supermodels and warped family. Not only are these people full of secrets, so, too, is Lula. Strike takes nothing for granted and, with Robin, feels his way along every thread till it yields some interesting tidbit or runs out. Striker works with police strategically but he is off on his own quest that in no way parallels what the police are up to.

One mystery never solved is why Rowling would not use her own name as author of “The Cuckoo’s Calling.” I’ve read that the book, though well reviewed, sold only 500 copies when bookstores began sending returns back to the publisher. And why would the publisher agree to this plan?

Now, of course, the secret is out. Readers, author and publisher all stand to gain as a result.

Opportunities for kindness all around us A college degree does Dear Abby: Congratulations to “Trying to Be Nice” (June 6) for her random acts of kindness.

The world needs more of it. Let me point out, however, that being nice isn’t just about doing specific charitable tasks. It is something that applies every moment of every day, and as the axiom says, “Charity begins at home.”

It can mean paying a compliment to a family member or friend, refraining from a hurtful comment at work or in school, smiling to a stranger on the street, willingly doing a chore at home (even if it’s “not my job”), or something as simple as cleaning up one’s own mess after lunch. To quote another axiom: Little things mean a lot.

Veterans organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project welcome volunteers to help with events, or mentor or assist vets in writing a resume.

If you sign up with Volunteers of America, they can match you with organizations that suit your skills – reading to the elderly in nursing homes, etc. Youth shelters can sometimes use volunteers to help teens learn basic life skills such as balancing a checkbook, smart grocery shopping or meal planning.

Around the holidays, my husband and I visit the cemetery and clean/maintain headstones that look neglected,

Recognizing risk factors can reduce chances for stroke Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my 60s. A good friend recently had a serious stroke. Is there anything she could have done to prevent it?

Dear Reader: Some strokes come out of the blue; they can’t be predicted or prevented. Perhaps your friend suffered from such a stroke.

However, most strokes occur in people who have “risk factors” for stroke, such as an unhealthy lifestyle or a medical condition that is not being adequately treated. Most strokes happen in people who could have done more to protect themselves against one, but didn’t.

To me, that’s hard to understand. A stroke can be devastating. It can take away your ability to move, talk and understand the world around you.

It can leave you utterly dependent on other people to help you with all the daily activities of living.

What happens in a stroke?

The blood supply to a part of the brain suddenly is lost. Unless that blood supply is restored, a part of the brain dies. Without a regular supply of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood, brain cells cannot remain alive.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The most common cause of a stroke is a sudden blockage in an artery. It’s called an ischemic (iss-KEE-mic) stroke. A buildup of fat in the wall of a brain artery (a plaque of atherosclerosis) can cause a blockage. A clot traveling through blood can get wedged in the artery.

Less often, a stroke occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, causing a hemorrhage.

This, too, severely damages a part of the brain.

There are many things people can – and should – do to reduce their stroke risk: • Lower blood pressure.

Maintain a blood pressure of less than 120/80 mm Hg. Reduce salt in your diet and eat more fruits and vegetables. Those dietary changes will help lower blood pressure. If needed, take blood pressure medicines.

• Lose weight. If you’re overweight, losing as little as 10 pounds can have a real impact on your stroke risk.

• Exercise more. Exercise at

a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.

This will reduce your risk of getting a stroke (and many other illnesses), even if you don’t lose weight from regular exercise.

• Drink in moderation. Moderate alcohol intake lowers the risk of stroke. Women can have one drink per day; men can have up to two.

• Take medicines your doctor has recommended for heart and blood vessel conditions. For example, a daily baby aspirin or a blood thinner for atrial fibrillation, or sugar-lowering medicines if you have diabetes.

• Quit smoking. Smoking accelerates clot formation. Use aids such as nicotine pills or patches, counseling or medicine to help you kick the habit.

I don’t know if your friend could have prevented her stroke, but I do know that most people whose lives are forever altered by a stroke could have done more to prevent it.

Dr. Wallace: I plan to attend college next year, after high-school graduation. I really don’t care what my major will be.

All I want is that diploma so I can go out and make money.

Please don’t let this shock you when I inform you that I will major in the easiest major available.

Most employers are impressed with the degree, not the major anyway.

Can you please tell me how much more a guy with a college degree can expect to earn over a guy with only a high school diploma? – Ken, St. John, Ind. Dear Ken: Those with college degrees earn, on average, close to half a million dollars more over a lifetime than people without that degree. However, my young friend, a college degree does not guarantee financial riches. The degree is merely the key. It’s up to the graduate to use that key to open the door of opportunity, especially in times of economic crises.

While I wish you success in your goals, I also hope your quest for “the easiest major” (as if there were such a major) gets waylaid and what you find instead is a field of study you actually enjoy.

Zack is my boyfriend. We’ve been together for three months, and I like him quite a bit. He has a twin sister and I detest her. She is arrogant, self-centered and has a big mouth. I refuse to talk to her. And I need to mention that his sister also despises me.

At the bridge table, players tend to be optimists or pessimists. In this deal, for example, look at the East and North hands.

East is defending against four spades. West leads the club jack.

What should East do?

In Standard American, South’s three-spade rebid shows extra values (usually 15-17 highcard points) and a good six-card suit. It is game-forcing after North’s two-over-one response.

If you are using two-over-one game-force, then three spades promises a solid suit and sets it as trumps. The responder is asked to control-bid (cue-bid) if interested in a slam. Here, North has a borderline hand. He could justify a four-diamond or fourheart control-bid. But since South has no side first-round control, he would sign off in four spades.

The dummy is depressing.

East knows that if declarer needs a diamond finesse, it is working.

East can see two club winners.

Maybe West has a trump trick (but not if South has shown a solid suit). What other chance is there?

None, apparently.

Well, there is one – West might be void of diamonds. After winning with his club king, East should shift to a diamond.

Here, West ruffs, returns a club to East’s ace, and receives another ruff for down one. Houseflies, be gone!

Some players would find this ruff, but only at trick three. They cannot resist immediately cashing available tricks. Take your time and think through the deal.
