Pair charged with Geneva burglaries

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The two young adults charged in connection with burglaries in St. Charles Township face 12 additional felonies out of Geneva, according to court records.

Christopher C. Mentenick, 24, of Sycamore, and Rebecca Olson, 19, of Schaumburg, now face nine counts of felony burglary as well as one count each of issuing or delivering a forged document, forgery and unlawful use of a

They are accused of burglarizing vehicles Aug. 8 in the 0-100 and 200 blocks of Westhaven Circle, the 200 block of Daniels Way, the

3300 block of Hillcrest Road and the 2900 and 3300 blocks of Husking Peg Lane, all in Geneva, according to documents.

Other allegations include forging a check.

Earlier this month, Mentenick and Olson were charged with four felonies after authorities reportedly linked them to eight vehicle burglaries that occurred in the Falcons Trail area of St. Charles Township between Aug. 7 and 10.

In St. Charles Township,

they reportedly entered unlocked vehicles and stole small electronic items and credit cards.

Some of the stolen credit cards were used to buy items that were later pawned for cash, police have said.

Mentenick was being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on $90,000 bond and is expected in court Sept. 12.

Olson was being held on $40,000 bond and is expected in court for a status hearing today.

BATV generating buzz over redesigned site

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Since BATV launched a redesigned website Monday, the number of people going to the community TV channel’s website has soared.

“We averaged 30 visits per day to our old website, but have averaged over 130 visits per day this week,” BATV station manager Holly Deitchman said.

The redesigned website at www.mybatv.com is designed to be easier to navigate.

The new website also features BATV’s colorful new logo.

“This is a full rebranding and relaunch for BATV,” Deitchman said. “We are trying to make it easy as possible to watch our programs. We want to make it as pleasant and enjoyable of an experience as possible.”

BATV continues to add more programs. “Out on the Town,” a monthly show spotlighting recreation and entertainment, premiered in February.

The monthly show “Viewpoint,” which features a roundtable discussion of a “hot” topic in the community, premiered in July. “Viewpoint” is moderated by Kathy Gresey, editor of the Kane

Kane to evaluate proposals from vendors

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County information technology officials soon will begin the process of selecting the software vendors who will vie for the contract to design the county court system’s new electronic document management system.

Roger Fahnestock, Kane County’s chief information officer, told the county task force overseeing the development of the new system that he and others in the county would begin reviewing proposals from vendors Friday.

Process begins the county courts’ software project From there, the review team would evaluate the proposals, and select those with what they believe to be the best proposals to advance to the stage of making their pitch and demonstrating their products in person.

“You have to do your due diligence, to see if they really do meet all of our requirements,” Fahnestock said.

Officials associated with the various offices that operate within the Kane County court system, including the state’s attorney, public

defender, judiciary, circuit clerk and others, have worked together for years on the effort to create a new electronic document management system for the courts.

They have said the current document system is out of date and dysfunctional, costing taxpayers money by making the court system inefficient.

The county’s Public Safety and Judicial Technology Commission, which includes the leaders of the county

government, various county officials, judges and others, solicited proposals from vendors for the new software system earlier this year.

When the evaluation of those systems is completed in October, the county will have a solid estimate on the cost of the new system.

To date, the Kane County Board has agreed to use existing public safety sales tax money and other existing funding sources to set aside about $6 million over the next few years to help pay for

The judicial technology commission will next meet Oct. 10 to discuss the proposals and next steps in the process.

Committee hears plea for cooler schools in D-303

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Although St. Charles School District 303 is working to equip most of its schools with air conditioning, some Thursday told board members the relief cannot come soon enough.

St. Charles Education Association President Pam Turriff told the Business Services Committee that fans have been ineffective against the hot, humid air.

“In most places, the heat was intolerable,” she said of her experience visiting the schools this week.

Corron Elementary School parent Brian Wilson said his daughter is asking to not go to school because it’s “sticky and miserable.”

He said he initially told her to buck up and researched the issue, intending to show her the situation wasn’t dangerous.

“I found that it really is,” Wilson said, adding he and his wife now take their children out of school when temperatures reach a certain threshold.

District 303 began a multiyear capital improvement plan last year to get all of its elementary schools equipped with air conditioning.

Turriff is concerned that the amenity isn’t being installed soon enough and that two middle schools aren’t included in the plan.

“Please help us,” she said.

The committee did not comment on the issue, which was brought up during public com-

In other news, the committee supported an option to refinance the district’s long-term debt through refunding most of its Series 2005A bonds.

Robert Lewis of PMA Securities said a program through Bank of America could result in more than $3 million in savings.

“It seems like a pretty good option for the board,” Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

A resolution about the topic is set to be on the board’s agenda for Sept. 9.

The committee also began discussions about allotting more student parking at St. Charles East High School, which has about 60 to 70 open student spaces.

A system, such as a lottery, would need to be developed to allow for some juniors to have everyday parking like the seniors.

Estimated potential revenue is $12,000 to $14,000.

Board member Kathy Hewell noted that amount isn’t a lot, but it would add up over the years.

“It’s just money that’s there, being missed,” she said.

The administration plans to report further on the topic at a future meeting.

Portion of Route 64 to reopen to traffic today in St. Charles KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Part of Route 64 that has been under construction in St. Charles should be reopened to all lanes of traffic by today, according to the city.

The completed section is between Seventh Avenue and Kirk Road. Occasional lane closures might be necessary to finish landscaping and perform other final restoration activities.

“We are so glad this project is finishing up so we can get back to business as usual along that strip of major roadway,” incoming City Administrator Mark Koenen said in a news release.

“We know it has been tough for businesses located in and around the construction. The city is running print, online and radio ads to let everyone know that construction is complete and to draw traffic back to those

businesses.”

The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the road’s reopening at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Foxboro Plaza, 2400 E. Main St., St. Charles. All are invited.

“Our businesses are excited for residents to enjoy the newly paved roadway and increased ease of access to their businesses,” Chamber President and CEO Stacey Ekstrom said in the release.

“Please join us in celebrating the roadway expansion on Sept 12. We also look forward to the October completion when all our businesses will benefit.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation launched the construction project in April 2012 to reconstruct, widen and resurface Route 64 from Seventh Avenue to Route 59.

The final portion of the project – 38th Avenue to Route 59 – is set to be completed by Oct. 1.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Patrick Walker.

BATAVIA – The Rhino Room recently closed in downtown Batavia, but the attorney for the building’s landlord said he already is getting interest from other restaurants wanting to occupy the space.

“I think if you find the right people who know their business, it should do well,” said Grant Markuson, the attorney for the building’s landlord.

The Dietz Family Partnership owns the building.

The Rhino Room’s owner, Tina Miles, could not be reached for comment.

The Rhino Room closed about two to three weeks ago, Markuson said.

The restaurant opened in early 2012 in the building at the corner of Wilson Street and North River Street that previously housed Lime-

stone Coffee & Tea. Earlier this year, Limestone Coffee opened in a new location on Wilson Street.

Markuson recently put a “For Lease” sign in the space. “We’re getting calls from potential restaurants,” he said. “It seems like some type of restaurant would fit.”

He said he hopes the space will be filled quickly.

“Right now, we’re trying to work out the transition,” Markuson said.

Joi Cuartero, director of Batavia MainStreet, said she would like to see something go into the space that would complement the newly completed streetscape improvements on North River Street.

“There’s a lot of possibilities,” she said.

“Some kind of small restaurant could work if there is enough space for them, or it could be a wine bar or a bookstore.”

Teenager struck by car while crossing Fabyan Parkway

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Geneva teenager was taken to Delnor Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a car while crossing Fabyan Parkway in Batavia, police said.

Batavia police Detective Kevin Bretz said police responded to the area of Fabyan Parkway and Allen Drive at 3:21 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Bretz said the pedestrian, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to Delnor Hospital with unknown injuries. Chris King, spokesman for Delnor Hospital, said as of Thursday afternoon the teen still was being treated at Delnor.

Bretz said George Shutack, 56, of Wayne, was driving a 2008 Ford Escape east on Fabyan Parkway and was approaching Allen Drive in the outside lane closest to

the curb.

According to reports, the teen was heading south across Fabyan Parkway near Allen Drive and was struck

by Shutack’s vehicle in the outside lane.

Bretz said it’s possible Shutack didn’t see the pedestrian until it was too late because another vehicle was driving in the same direction on the inside lane close to Shutack’s vehicle, possibly blocking the view of the pedestrian.

Bretz said the driver of the car on the inside lane hit the brakes, causing Shutack to start braking. “[Shutack] started braking, and by that time, the pedestrian was in his line of traffic,” Bretz said.

The speed limit in that area is 40 mph, Bretz said.

No citations had been issued as of Thursday, Bretz said, but the case still is under review.

Police: Man tried to take photo under girl’s dress KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – An Elgin man was charged with disorderly conduct in connection with his alleged attempt to take a photo underneath the dress of a 10-year-old girl, according to reports.

Lance R. Olsen, 39, of the 500 block of Cardinal Cove Court, was charged Sunday.

According to court records, Olsen knowingly attempted to take a picture under the girl’s dress while in the children’s department at Barnes and Noble, 102 Commons Drive, Geneva, so as to alarm and disturb her father and provoke a breach of the peace.

Olsen is to appear in Kane County Branch Court on Sept. 17.

SUGAR GROVE – Melisa Taylor said the time is not right for her to make a run at becoming south central Kane County’s state representative.

Taylor, a Kane County Board member and a Republican from Sugar Grove, said Thursday that she will not be a candidate for the 50th State House District. Kay Hatcher, a Yorkville Republican who currently holds that seat, has announced that she will not seek re-election in 2014.

No candidates have emerged for the 2014 election for Hatcher’s seat.

Ethan Hastert, an Elburn Village Board member and the son of former Speaker of the U.S. House Dennis Hastert, has said he “will not be running” in the 50th District.

Taylor previously said she didn’t know whether she would run for the seat, and she said she considered it.

But she said Thursday that while her family would support a run for the 50th District, she didn’t feel it was the right time for her

to make such a commitment because her family must remain a priority.

Also, she said because the County Board districts recently were redrawn, there is a portion of her new district that she had been representing for only a short time.

“A decision like that, to run for the 50th, is life altering,” Taylor said.

And although she said the time wasn’t right Melisa for a run in Taylor 2014, she would be interested in the future.

“Will I consider it going forward after this election?

Yes, I will,” she said.

“It would be an opportunity to represent more people, to be a voice for more people.”

Taylor now represents all of Sugar Grove and Big Rock.

Previously, her district covered only a portion of that.

“There’s lots of work to be done,” she said, adding that her “responsibility lies with my current County Board district.”

Board to start Coffee and Conversations initiative

Peck Farm to host monarch event

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – During the Batavia School District 101 school board meeting Tuesday night, board President Cathy Dremel announced a new initiative designed to help open the lines of communication between board members and the community.

“We want to hear from our stakeholders,” Dremel said in a district news release. “It’s important that we gather viewpoints from members of the community, so we can better understand their priorities. To help facilitate this

process, we would like to offer the opportunity to have coffee and a conversation with a board member.”

The Coffee and Conversations initiative will give community members the opportunity to meet in an informal setting with up to two board members at a time.

Unlike the public comments segment at regular board meetings, the Coffee and Conversations sessions will allow people to speak beyond the time constraints typically faced when addressing the board in a public forum.

Dremel said board mem-

bers who host such sessions primarily will be in listening mode rather than conducting official board business.

“When board members act in this capacity, we will not be problem solving, or doing the work of the board,” Dremel said. “We will be collecting information as individuals so we have a wider spectrum of knowledge to make informed decisions.”

After ripping it out twice this summer, you find Creeping Charlie again, strangling the perennials; the garage cleaned in June has reverted to its former chaos; the kids who consumed your waking life the past three months have disapparated like wizard children.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A wonderful community To the Editor: As I leave the position of city administrator, I express my gratitude to the members of the St. Charles community for the opportunity to work with, and for, them. I have been fortunate to meet many great people during my time here – residents, businesspeople, community volunteers, elected officials, city employees and employees of intergovernmental partners.

Since 2005, a great deal has been accomplished to enhance the reputation of St. Charles as a community that is admired and an organization that is respected. I am proud that together we could enhance core services, advance the city’s economic standing, modernize infrastructure, enrich relationships and improve resident satisfaction.

The number of respondents to a community survey who rate St. Charles as “excellent” increased to 57 percent, the highest percentage ever achieved.

The city weathered the Great Recession without significant impact on quality of service delivery and with no employee layoffs.

City infrastructure was improved, including a new parking structure, new fire station, remodeled public works facility, new water treatment facility, new waste water treatment facility, electric system upgrades that enhanced reliability and the new Red Gate Bridge over the Fox River.

AURORA – West Aurora School District 129 once again will release students early today because of expected high temperatures and humidity.

Most of the district’s schools are not air conditioned and have accumulated heat from the past four days that is not expected to dissipate because of warm overnight temperatures, according to a district news release.

Schools will be dismissed according to the following schedule: • 10:40 a.m. – West Aurora High School. Practices will be held immediately after this early dismissal time. Friday evening football games will occur as scheduled.

• 11 a.m. – Todd Early Childhood Center and no afternoon preschool.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Essay contest underway Cmdr. Matthew M. Mihelcic of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Illinois has announced the kickoff of this year’s VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary “Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition.”

Sixth- through eighth-graders have the opportunity to compete in the VFW’s annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars.

Students begin by competing at the local post level.

Post winners advance to district level. Eighteen district winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards at the national level, and the national champion wins $5,000.

Each year, around 125,000 students participate nationwide. Students are invited to write a 300- to 400-word essay on a patriotic theme.

The theme for 2013-14 is

“What Patriotism Means to Me.” The deadline for student entries is Nov. 1.

Heroin hits home • Part two

Program helps addicts get clean Don’t ignore the problem, experts say

The message, from mothers, fathers and grandparents, is usually the same: “‘He’s still clean. Thank you so much.”

Solano often refers heroin-addicted clients – most of them teens and young adults – into the county’s drug court program in an attempt to save their lives. He estimated that 75 percent of his 40 to 50 drug court clients have survived and stayed in recovery, hence the holiday thank-you notes.

“I put a lot of people in there,” Solano said. “It was the best of both worlds. You get clean, and at the end, the case gets dismissed. That is why drug court was a good option.”

It’s an option the defense attorney has utilized more frequently during the last 10 years in Kane County, as heroin use has reached what law enforcement and prevention advocates call an “epidemic.”

Brought in on Interstate 88 from the West Side of Chicago, heroin has found a new home in Kane County, and settled in for the long haul.

“In my first 10 years, including five as a state’s attorney, I’m not sure I ever saw it unless it was a random case in Aurora or Elgin,” said Solano, 45, of Big Rock. “It was rare.”

Carrie Thomas, coordinator of the Kane County Drug Rehabilitation Court, and others in law enforcement said the problem in St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva and other Kane County communities has caused a spike in heroin addiction and overdose deaths.

ner’s Office recorded 27 heroin overdose deaths in 2012, up from 11 in 2011, seven in 2010 and 10 in 2009.

There have been 12 so far this year.

Thomas has a message for those in more affluent area communities who have a hard time believing heroin addiction is a local problem.

“The time for burying your head in the sand is done,” Thomas said. “Heroin is not going to go away because you don’t want it here.

It’s so important for people and parents to be educated to see the warning signs in their kids and also to understand it is an addiction. It has to

••• Heroin is a depressant – diacetylmorphine – derived from morphine, which comes from opium. It is one of the most addictive drugs, outranked only by nicotine, according to research by the Roosevelt University’s Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy.

More recently, heroin lost its needle-in-the-arm, eww-factor to a purity that allowed it to be sniffed or snorted. Combined with the cost – heroin is cheaper and easier to get than prescription painkillers, Thomas said – and

mother or father. You only choose to use heroin the first time. After that, your addiction owns you and you could wind up dead. Make the right choice: Choose not to use.”

Lea Minalga of St. Charles stressed that message has to go out to youth as much as their parents, and the community needs to support prevention and education efforts.

Minalga founded Hearts of Hope, a local advocacy nonprofit that supports the drug court and provides resources and support for addicts and their families.

Her son is a recovering heroin addict.

“You can’t say it won’t happen to my kid or this only happens to bad kids or because of bad parenting.

All families are at risk,” Minalga said.

••• One effort seeing some success is the Kane County Drug Rehabilitation Court, which allows nonviolent drug offenders to have their

charges held in abeyance while they complete rehabilitation, pay their fines, get frequent drug tests and attend weekly court dates.

A third of the 106 participants are there for heroin.

From 2009 to 2011, 78 people graduated from the drug court, 21 of whom had heroin as their drug of choice.

To date, 12 have re-offended, Thomas said.

The program meets three times a week in courtroom 123 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

“Good evening, it’s nice to have everyone here,” Kane County Judge Marmarie Kostelny said on a recent Wednesday to the 20 or so drug court participants gathered.

Kostelny called out each person by name and felony case number, greeting all with friendly, personal questions: “How has your summer been?” and “How’s the baby?” and “How’s your week been?”

They tell her about missing sleep due to teething

babies, new jobs, finishing GEDs, or getting raises and promotions.

“I’m 14 months sober, and I’m getting a raise,” one said. “I’m just showing up and doing my job.”

Kostelny offered encouragement and praise.

“I’m impressed,” she said. “Keep staying on track. We want you to be successful.”

Nothing is overlooked as Kostelny tracked each on how many meetings they attend, how many clean urine drops they’ve had and whether their court fines are being paid.

Kostelny is kind – but firm – to the ones who relapse.

“Let’s put this behind you and get you back on track,” Kostelny said to one she sent to jail on the weekends. “We have to talk about what happened on this relapse. You have to think carefully about what happened. Honesty is critical. If you’re not honest, you can’t get help.”

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell’s office is the convergence point for those who die of a heroin overdose; he cited that as cause of death 27 times in 2012, and 12 times so far this year.

Russell attributes the increase in use to how cheap heroin is, and noted since it’s not regulated, a user doesn’t know how much actual substance he or she will get per use.

“What we’re noticing is a lot of people will be using for a long time, then they decide they want to stop. They go through rehab; then they relapse and use the same amount – and it winds up killing them,” Russell said, explaining the spike in overdose deaths.

Russell said he is open to suggestions as to how his office could be more proactive in preventing heroin deaths.

“It is happening to your friends. It is not happening to people far away. It’s happening to your neighbors.

We need to mastermind with some of the advocacy groups out there as to what can we do to help,” Russell said. “We do not know what else we can do if kids are going to look death in the face and still do this stuff.”

It’s a frustration shared

by Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, who lamented at a recent anti-drug event that no matter how many heroin and drug informational programs he hosts, only a handful of parents attend.

“Educational things are kind of being ignored,” Russell said. “I do not know why that is – other than we need to look at a different way of trying to educate people.”

Russell is considering emulating Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil’s website, which prominently lists the rise in heroin overdose deaths from six in 1999 to 30 each in 2011 and 2012, and 21 so far this year.

The website includes a video of O’Neil urging young people not to use heroin.

“It’s heartbreaking to tell unsuspecting parents that their child has died from a heroin overdose,” O’Neil says in the video. “I hope I never have to talk to your

‘Bittersweet’ debut for new North coach

T. CHARLES – Rob Pomazak said keeping his emotions in check will be one of his major challenges as he transitions from an assistant coach to the man in command.

Good luck sticking to that tonight, coach.

Pomazak will coach his first game at St. Charles North as the North Stars’ new era begins with Elk Grove, the school at which Pomazak was a teacher and assistant football coach for a decade-plus.

“Obviously 13 years of my life were spent there,” Pomazak said. “I coached a lot of these kids’ brothers and their brothers so the roots run pretty deep with a lot of those guys. We were a family. I care tremendously about each and every one of them, still, on that team, so it’s obviously bittersweet to go against the kids who you’ve worked so hard to get to the point where they’re at. But it’s also really a sense of pride to see so many of them doing well.”

Pomazak, who was Elk Grove’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, won’t be alone in the mixed emotions department. Two of his varsity assistants – defensive assistants Rick Magsamen and Dan Meyo – followed Pomazak from Elk Grove to St. Charles North, as did North volunteer sophomore assistant Eddie Stahl, a former player of Pomazak’s at Elk Grove.

All those interwoven connections conceivably could distract from the mission at hand, but the Elk Grove transplants’ acumen about their old program has proven helpful in North’s game-planning.

“We have schemes and PowerPoints on PowerPoints on what Elk Grove does and what tendencies they have on first down, second down, third down,” North two-way lineman Camden Cotter said. “It’s going to really help us as a defense and an offense to just know exactly where they’re going and what time they’re going to do it.”

Of course, that could swing both ways.

While Elk Grove’s coaches don’t know North’s personnel the way Pomazak and Co. know the Grenadiers, second-year Elk Grove coach Larry Calhoun’s staff is armed with a deep understanding of the preferred formations and play-calling preferences of North’s new staff, especially on defense.

It’s a different dynamic.”

The North-Elk Grove matchup was already scheduled when Pomazak was hired to replace the retired Mark Gould.

Pomazak said he and Calhoun talked regularly toward the end of last school year when they were in the same building but their dialogue has trailed off since.

Calhoun ran Elk Grove’s offense while Pomazak molded a high-performing defense.

Meyo, who coached the defensive line at Elk Grove, just as he now does at North, said the ex-Grenadier coaches intend to

keep tonight about the here-and-now as opposed to bragging rights over their old employer. Squeezing in some friendly banter with their former players and colleagues won’t be a high priority, Meyo said.

“That’s usually kind of hard,” Meyo said. “We keep a pretty tight schedule, that way we keep our kids moving and focused so they’re not sitting around. We’ll shake hands and talk after the game and that kind of thing. Beforehand, it’ll probably be a little bit tough.”

Adding to the intrigue, the teams appear poised to play a competitive game, with each program optimistic it can bounce back from a lukewarm 2012 season.

Speaking at his team’s walk-through practice Thursday at North, Pomazak said it felt “like Christmas Eve right now.” He anticipates a respectful reunion at his old stomping grounds.

“I made a point of letting [the Elk Grove players] know that I would never be in the position I’m in if it weren’t for them,” Pomazak said. “While it was bittersweet for them, they understood this was a goal of mine, and we always talk about achieving goals and helping each other to achieve those goals. So while there might have been some tears because of the separation, they were inevitably happy for me, which I thought was really important.”

COACHING SPOTLIGHT Wheaton Academy’s Brad Thornton, 28, will make his Warriors debut tonight when the Warriors visit Westminster (Mo.). Thornton, a former Wheaton College standout, was handed the reins on an interim basis.

“As a player, I never got nervous for any game, big or small, and right now I’m feeling fine,” Thornton said. “I’m not going to get nervous. Fortunately, I’m excited for it more than anything.”

PLAYOFF WATCH St. Charles North has not won a non-conference game since a 62-49 shootout win against McHenry in Week 2 of 2010. North’s hopes of ending a three-year playoff drought would receive a major boost with a better start this season, beginning tonight at Elk Grove.

The buzz in the stands Whether this year’s meeting can provide a worthy sequel to the 2012 opener in Carol Stream, where the Bulldogs earned a memorable 42-41 win against the eventual Class 8A state runners-up. Although both teams again boast high-level talent on offense, Batavia coach Dennis Piron said he would not be surprised if this game is less high-scoring since the teams have more insight into how the other will try to attack.

The marquee matchup Glenbard North running back Justin Jackson vs. Batavia’s linebackers. Jackson, a Northwestern recruit, is capable of making a defense look plodding and inept, even one as capable as Batavia’s.

“I guess you would be as concerned as anyone would when they say you’re playing the No. 1 running back in Illinois,” Piron said.

A Bulldogs linebacking corps led by senior middle LB Anthony Thielk – who says he’s in much better shape after cramping up in last year’s opener – will strive to limit Jackson’s big gains.

“He’s a back that is a slashing type running back who’s got good speed and also runs with power,” Glenbard North coach Ryan Wilkens said. “He understands what’s going on in front of him.”

Jackson is also a dynamic defensive back for the Panthers but Wilkens said the hot weather might keep the Panthers from playing him both ways as extensively as

they prefer.

The X-factors Batavia has the experience advantage at quarterback, where Micah Coffey returns after an impressive junior season. The Bulldogs plan to showcase a deeper array of receiving targets than what Coffey was accustomed to last year, including Rourke Mullins, who is even faster than explosive Bulldogs running back Anthony Scaccia.

Glenbard North, meanwhile, turns to a new signal-caller, junior Brett Gasiorowski, who stands 6-foot-4, 210 pounds. Wilkens said Gasiorowski “makes the throws,” though refining his timing was a summer-long focus.

If this game is another tight one, kicking could loom large. Piron said Danny Aharoni likely will get first crack as place-kicker after a preseason competition with Howie Morgano.

Best-case scenario for the Panthers Defensive ends Connor Dombrowski and Cyris Parker – among the linchpins of a new-look Panthers defense – keep Scaccia from successfully bouncing plays to the outside, and collapse the pocket with regularity when the Bulldogs pass. Winning the line of scrimmage fight against a Batavia O-line led by Mitch Krusz, Connor McKeehan and Patrick Gamble is the best way to curtail Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari’s notoriously thick playbook.

“He runs the right plays at the right times, whether it’s under center or shotgun or two-back or spread or empty,” Wilkens said of Gaspari. “It’s very difficult.

We’re a little bit different where 80 percent of the time we’re two-back or under center. It makes it more difficult. It’s more prep time. They do a good job.”

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs

Batavia starts quick and feeds off what is sure to be a boisterous, likely sold-out crowd at Bulldog Stadium. Piron said this shapes up to be a record year in everything from student section participation to booster club support.

“There’s a tremendous amount of energy around our fall sports program in general and a tremendous amount of energy around our football program,” Piron said.

“Hopefully we do something this season that honors the support we’re getting.”

Look for Batavia two-way performer Michael Moffatt to start his senior year right with a couple impact plays and Scaccia to demonstrate there’s more than one elite running back on the field. The Bulldogs will need to play clean football, though, because the Panthers – who have advanced to the state semifinal round or deeper four of the past six seasons – are certainly capable of saddling Piron with what would be his first regular season loss as he opens Year 3 as Bulldogs coach.

All the extra insights at his disposal could be helpful, provided the night’s natural emotions don’t muddy his thoughts. “Sometimes emotion blinds you from your analytical thinking,” Pomazak said. “But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to have an emotional edge to what we’re out there doing [on Friday].”

The North Stars’ blocking should be the team’s calling card, led by tackles Chase Gianacakos and Camden Cotter and tight end Garrett Johnson. Senior Evan Kurtz, a touted running back, is poised to take advantage.

Extra point: Pomazak said keeping the game’s big picture in mind will be a challenge as he transitions to head coach.

His goal is to be “like a duck on water, poised up on top but working your tail off underneath.”

a punishing running game but Wicinski said this year’s strength likely will be on the perimeter. Junior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina had a solid summer and returning receivers Kyle Brown and Pace Temple will be complemented by 6-6 junior Michael Landi and fellow junior Brock Perry, who has turned heads in recent weeks.

A young, inexperienced offensive line is a glaring question mark. “That’s one unit we definitely have to get data on,” Wicinski said. “I just hope they fight, that’s the bottom line. SOUTH ELGIN – With only three seniors on a squad that also includes three sophomores and two freshmen to go along with six juniors, Geneva girls volleyball coach KC Johnsen was curious to see how his team would respond to some adversity.

He got an answer Thursday in Upstate Eight Conference crossover action with South Elgin.

The Vikings easily won Game 1, KC Johnsen 25-15, and then fell behind 7-4 in the second game. But Geneva responded with a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead and never gave up the advantage to complete the Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory with a 2520 win in Game 2.

“In Game 1, we were making a few too many errors, but they didn’t show up because South Elgin was on about the same level,” Johnsen said. “In the second game South Elgin started out a little stronger while we stayed at the same level.

“Then we started to straighten things out and take better care of the ball. It was nice to see how the kids responded [to some adversity] in a game as opposed to in practice.”

Geneva (2-0) took a 4-1 lead in Game 1, let South Elgin (0-1) back in for a bit at 7-6, but then used a 4-0 run to get some breathing room.

Hannah Lanasa had a kill and Kelsey Wicinski an ace during the run.

Kyley Thompson’s kill increased the lead to 16-10, and a service point and ace from Megan Cameron gave the Vikings a 19-11 advantage.

Junior Maddie Courter’s kill closed out the game.

“In Game 1 we had some pretty good hits, some pretty good defense,” Lanasa said.

“The second game was a little iffy. I think we kind of easyupped, but we came back.”

In Game 2, the Vikings erased the Storm’s early lead thanks in part to a block-kill

by Taylor Marmitt, a kill from Grace Loberg and a Lanasa block-kill.

Geneva took a 20-12 lead before the Storm had one last rally in it, using three aces to trim the lead to 20-16.

However, the Vikings rebounded and closed out the match on a Loberg kill.

“We did a lot better tonight compared to [a win Tuesday against Rosary],” Lanasa said. “We were talking a lot more, we had a lot more defensive control and our blocking was very good. Overall, we played really well.

“We all get along pretty well, so the mix of young players and older players is not a big deal. We are comfortable with each other.”

Loberg, a freshman, and Lanasa led Geneva with five kills each and Thompson had four. Courtney Caruso had six assists and Cameron four.

“This is very good group, very hard-working,” Johnsen said. “They are going to get used to each other, used to their setter. I think we will get better as the year goes on.

“We’ve got a little more size than the past few years, and certainly enough athleticism and skill that if we keep improving as the season goes along, I think we’ll be OK.”

Mistake costs Torrez, Cougars in loss

JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Before the start of Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division soccer match between St. Charles East and Batavia, the PA announcer told the crowd he’d been cautioned to correctly pronounce DiLeonardi, the last name of a pair of Saints.

He got plenty of practice at saying the name before the night was over.

Evan DiLeonardi scored the first goal and his older brother, Daniel, added two more as East (2-0) rolled to a 5-0 victory.

Evan, a sophomore, put the Saints on the board midway through the first half on a header off a corner kick.

“It was a really good ball

“He put it right on the six [yard-line]. I just headed it in.”

Exactly three minutes later, the elder DiLeonardi buried a shot into the upper left corner of the net after a defensive lap by the Bulldogs (0-2).

“My teammates had crashed on the previous long throw, so I decided to sit on top of the box and hope for [the ball] to come out,” Daniel said.

“It came out and I got a nice, kind of lucky finish that went in the top corner.”

Miscues by his defenders in the box was a source of frustration all night for Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco.

“We’ve got to clear the ball,” he said. “The first one was a corner; we weren’t holding our mark. They were just free. The second one, cleared it right to the top of the box.

Third one, ricochet, misclear, just three guys waiting in front and they bang it in.”

That third goal was scored two minutes into the second half by Tyler Robbins.

Daniel DiLeonardi made it 4-0 with 25 minutes left, scoring after the ball caromed off a post.

“I had just been moved to right mid[field], so I was out wide,” Daniel said. “I saw Tyler shoot and I saw it trickle in toward the post. It hit the post and bounced back out and I just curved my run enough to tap it in.”

Daniel, a senior, almost had a hat trick. Less than two minutes before his second goal, Batavia keeper Kevin Fiddelke made a save of a DiLeonardi shot at near point-blank range.

“My brother won the ball in the midfield and played a quick outlet pass to me,” Daniel said. “I brought it upfield, cut in and got a nice shot off.

It might seem natural the DiLeonardi brothers would make such connections on the soccer field as a matter of routine, but the duo have rarely played together on the same field.

“It’s new,” Evan said. “I’ve played on the same clubs and in the yard with him my whole life, but not like with him on the same team. It’s getting better, I guess. It was kind of stressful at first.”

The younger DiLeonardi said that’s because of the high expectations of his sibling.

After a highly successful 2012 campaign, all of the Saints have high expectations for the current season, and coach Paul Jennison still found plenty of room for improvement after the easy win.

“I thought, in all fairness, the first 10 minutes, Batavia was the better team,” Jennison said. “They were playing one-touch stuff on top and they were moving the ball a lot better than we were. … The first 10 minutes we did the exact opposite of everything we talked about going into the game.”

Sam Shelton added a late goal for the Saints and keeper Mike Novotny made a solid save on a free kick with four seconds left to preserve the clean sheet.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In his Midwest League debut, Daury Torrez was effective for the Kane County Cougars but made one mistake that cost him and the club in a 5-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field.

Torrez (0-1) allowed a run in the bottom of the second after blazing through a perfect first inning. Travis Harrison singled with one out before moving to third on a hit-and-run off the bat of Bo Altobelli.

Joel Licon’s sacrifice fly to right-center scored Harrison to put Cedar Rapids (85-49, 45-21) on top.

Two innings later, the Kernels added to their advantage against Torrez. Tyler Grimes singled and stole second before Mike Gonzales hit a two-run home run over the fence in left-center field to give Cedar Rapids a 3-0 cushion.

Brett Lee (8-4) didn’t need much support from his offense.

Lee limited the Cougars (5378, 23-42) to just three singles over his six innings of work while walking just one and striking out five.

Hudson Boyd kept the Cougars off the board in the seventh and the eighth before Madison Boer allowed two in the ninth.

He told only his girlfiend, Cynthia, of his flight to south Florida last week, and still is beaming about the surprised face of his mother, Ana, when he arrived at his house.

Almora knows those moments can’t speed up his recovery, but they’re still part of what keeps him grounded as he prepares to play with Mesa of the Arizona Fall League beginning Oct. 8.

“I’ve been trying to stay away from life in general just

since I’ve been home,” Almora said. “I just want to enjoy my family, enjoy the loved ones.

Have fun, be relaxed, clear my mind and get ready for a brand new year, a brand new beginning.”

Almora said he hasn’t been told when he’ll report to Mesa – also the Cubs’ spring training home – but he’ll be re-evaluated then. Almora and the team have described his injury as a bruised bone in his groin, a dicey condition that prompted the Cubs to put

Albert Almora referenced his volume of interviews this baseball season upon yielding to another one Thursday.

The Cubs’ prized center field prospect recalls fielding frequent questions about the goals he brought into his first full professional season, a topic that’s come full-circle as he recovers from a groin injury at his spacious West Kendall, Fla., home.

As instinctually as he played for 61 games with the Cougars, Almora listed staying healthy atop his list of objectives. While he won’t abandon those aspirations for next season and beyond, the Cubs’ 2012 first-round pick is up front about falling short this time.

“I played well in the field and I felt great when I was playing, but I couldn’t maintain my body,” Almora said by cellphone. “It was a satisfactory year on the field, but I didn’t meet my goal of wanting to play more.”

Cubs officials pegged Almora, 19, to begin the season with Class-A Kane County from the start, but his arrival took a detour when he broke the

Almora still keeps in touch with teammates, but said he does not want to be intrusive.

Some Cougars are preparing for instructional league, and others still have a few games to put themselves in better standing for next season.

Apart from his health woes, Almora likes where he stands.

He recently took to “hot yoga” to liven up the healing process and show the Cubs further initiative.

“Once they give me the OK to go full blast, I will,” Almora said. “But until then, I’ve got to wait.”

Labor Day means the beginning of a new school year Labor Day is one of those sweet holidays – no gifts, no decorations, no costumes, no colored eggs, etc. Dependably the date is always the first Monday of September yet the weather is more like August.

Mister Z who is hyper-curious has an imposed limit of one question a day.

“What’s the story on Labor Day?” In order to avoid repeating myself, I encouraged him to ask me again on Friday.

Well, the first Labor Day was way back in the 1880s, a time of turmoil and riots as workers began to organize into unions.

Canada already had a labor celebration day. As the movement to recognize workers progressed, the momentum went from local jurisdiction to statewide and eventually to the status of a federal holiday in 1894.

Posters in stores up and down Main Street heralded the usual carnival. Spin the wheel and win a ham or some bacon; ride the miniature train; saddle up on a real pony; experience the thrill of the Ferris Wheel; and play bingo with real kernels of corn.

Those were the days when school started the next day.

Shopping for girls meant winter items such as a coat, boots for snow, saddle shoes, skirts and blouses.

Jeans? Not proper.

Sure it was hot, but no air conditioning needed, they said.

No bus rides from the west side to Haines; walk from the east side to the high school.

We had no backpacks. Loretta Hahn and I would sit on my steps and watch the long blue line of “Mounties” who each had an armful of cleverly stacked books.

Made us wonder if we would look more studious if we could drag home some books, too.

Labor Day was the bridge away from swimming and sun bathing to the colors of autumn, crunchy leaves and the annual appearance of the “Injun Summer” illustration in the Chicago Tribune.

All hope had been abandoned by Chicago baseball, yet there were still holiday double-. headers.

“Let’s play two” proclaimed Ernie Banks with optimism.

As a long time educator, it seemed to me that Labor Day was the beginning of a new year.

If so, let’s profess our optimism and play two.

Ken and Lynn Robinson will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Robinsons were married in Detroit.

Lynn Robinson studied education at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., and Ken Robinson studied chemical engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

They lived in Saint Louis, Mo., for eight years and eventually settled in St. Charles in 1974.

Lynn Robinson taught for more than 34 years as an elementary teacher while Ken worked for Amoco Oil – now BP – and then started his own company – Mega-Carbon in St. Charles.

They have two sons, Reid and Jeff Robinson.

Reid Robinson lives in Maui, Hawaii, while Jeff Robinson lives in Billings, Mont., with his wife, Krista, and three children, Cooper, Grace and Luke.

Prius, Yaris worthy entries in niche market In the small economical niche of the automotive market, Toyota has worthy entries. Two of them are the Prius and the Yaris. Both were tested recently. Another product from Toyota with similar small and economical characteristics is the Matrix. It has not been test driven recently but has been in the not-so-distant past. The Matrix is scheduled to go out of production at the end of 2013, but the Yaris and Prius are continuing in the market and with good reason. They are popular vehicles.

The Yaris can be considered as the smaller brother of the Matrix. The Corolla also can be tossed into this small and economical mix from Toyota. Yaris, Matrix and Corolla average more than 30 miles per gallon in combined city and country fuel usage. The Prius will average more, depending on if it is the Prius sedan (about 50 mpg), Prius C liftback (also about 50 mpg), Prius Plug-in (up to 90 mpg) or Prius V wagon, which is in the 40 to 50 mpg range.

This review zeroes in on the Yaris and the Prius V, the cheapest and the costliest, respectively, of Toyota’s mainstream small economical vehicles.

As expected, the subcompact Yaris front-wheel-drive hatchback is the least expensive with prices starting at $14,370 and rising to $16,480. With trim (L, LE, SE) and door numbers increasing, so does the pricing. The vehicle comes with two or four doors although Toyota describes it as three or five doors. Toyota counts the liftgate as a door. Most of the automotive press recognizes a door as an entry by a human, not cargo, into a vehicle.

With a 1.5-liter, dual overhead cam, 106-horsepower four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, the 2,315-pound Yaris averaged 35.2 mpg during a week of aggressive test driving on combined city and country roads. One person was aboard and the air conditioning was in use. The tested

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper mpg came close to the 36 mpg forecast by the Environmental Protection Agency on strictly highway use. The EPA rates the Yaris at 30 mpg in the city and 32 mpg combined city and highway driving. The tested Yaris was a two (three)-door LE model costing $15,999. The LE replaces a five-speed manual of the base L model with a four-speed automatic transmission and also adds remote keyless entry and cruise control.

It was a relief to work a sound system with at least one knob (on-off and volume). The rest of the sound system also was simplified. There were separate buttons to push for AM-FM-satellite radio, compact discs and auxiliary devices. No waving of a hand and hopefully landing on the correct location of a pushbutton screen to find a sound source.

Toyota’s Prius V Toyota’s Prius V is the wagon version of the sedan. As such,

it offers more room for people and cargo. This, along with the economical characteristic of a hybrid, has made the Prius V hatchback a popular vehicle. It does not have to rely on manufacturer incentives to sell. The Prius V sells itself.

It may be the most economical and practical hybrid hatchback on the market. Certainly it is the simplest and easiest to understand. When the power button is pushed, it turns green and the sedan is ready to roll forward in drive or backward in reverse.

Beneath the power button is another of the same size that has a big P in the middle of it. When the Prius V has braked to a stop, and the driver wants the car in park, pushing the button with the big P will do it. An annoyance with other hybrids is shifting through the choices (drive, reverse, neutral, park) to find the right one, especially park.

In practical terms, the Prius V may be rated as a compact vehicle, but it lives larger than that. The front seats, for example, slide back for comfortable seating for humans that even exceed a height of 6 feet and 2 inches (this reviewer). Of course

leg room in the rear is compromised when the front seats are at their furthest extension. For families of normal leg length, the rear seat in the Prius V is roomy and comfortable. Since the Prius V is a hatchback, lots of luggage can be stored behind the upright rear seat. Even more, if the split rear seat is folded flat. Officially, it is 34.3 cubic feet with rear seat upright and 67.3 cubic feet with it flattened. That rear seat not only folds flat but also slides and reclines. If longer items are to be carried, the passenger front seat folds flat.

This hatchback is six inches longer, an inch wider and three inches taller than an ordinary Prius sedan, and the extra measurement means more storage capacity as well as leg room front and rear.

The Prius V comes in three models and they are Two, Three and Five. They share the same power source, which is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric motors to develop 134 horsepower while mated to a continuously variable transmission. During the test week, the Two averaged 43.3 miles per gallon in combined city

and country driving with two persons aboard.

The $26,650 Two model was tested and it exuded comfort, especially when it came to leg room, as well as fuel economy.

The Prius V has been tested coming to a stop from 60 miles per hour in 129 feet. This is not remarkable. It also has been tested doing 0 to 60 mph in 10.3 seconds, which may be too slow for some.

At $27,415 the Three adds a rear view camera, satellite and high definition radio and a navigation system with voice commands.

For $30,295, the Five brings 17-inch alloy wheels, upgrade upholstery, heated front seats, fog lights and automatic headlights. Rear view mirrors are self dimming.

Somewhat interesting is that all four windows, even on the Two model, are express up and down.

The Prius V is listed as a small hatchback but, after a week in it, the thought is that it is the equivalent of a midsize vehicle.

‘Therese:’ A depressing, but lovely time

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Long before suburban malaise, there was provincial melancholy, and Therese Desqueyroux had a severe case. Played by Audrey Tautou, the title character of the 1920s-set French film “Therese” clearly is miserable. But director Claude Miller has a harder time showing that she deserves pity, much less a moviegoer’s precious minutes, in this beautifully filmed but lumbering adaptation of Francois Mauriac’s 1927 novel.

The film opens in 1922 as Therese and her friend Anne wile away a summer day in a remote forested area of France. The pine trees that surround the girls belong to two families – Anne’s and Therese’s – and a marriage

between the latter and her friend’s brother, Bernard (Gilles Lellouche), would be advantageous for all parties.

Six years later Therese and Bernard marry, but before the union Therese seems troubled.

The daughter of a radical, Therese has her own ideas, and she seems to hope that marriage will silence the voices in her head that protest the status quo. But rather than assimilate, Therese’s discontent only grows more acute after she marries, especially when she hears about the relationship between Anne (played as an adult by Anais Demoustier) and a mysterious man.

The pairing is particularly passionate given that Anne’s parents veto the match. The woman’s ardor becomes something of an obsession for Therese,

even though it only serves to remind her of her loveless marriage.

Therese ends up at odds with the entire Desqueyroux clan, and in a moment of desolation, she makes a fateful decision she hopes might save her.

For the most part, “Therese” is a joyless tale, and the normally incandescent Tautou deserves praise for her ability to dull her radiance. The number of times she smiles in the film likely falls short of double digits.

She is depressed, and she seemed so from the start.

It’s hard to lament her circumstances when her tedious marriage may not, in fact, be to blame.

This is a film that weighs heavily, and yet it’s not an emotional undertaking. With the exception of one heartbreaking and well-acted

scene towards the end of the movie, the atmosphere is oppressive and the characters act as if their personalities have been shot with Novocain.

All that being said, the movie is lovely to look at.

Memorable images look like real-life replicas of paintings, including a shot of a red-sailed boat floating along blue water and angles that capture the rustic allure of tall trees.

The magnificent nature that surrounds Therese becomes her prison. It’s an interesting paradox, but not necessarily an especially satisfying experience.

• “Therese” gets a twostar rating. The film is not rated, and contains sexual situations and brief violence. The film is in French with English subtitles, and runs 110 minutes.

Dear Abby: I have a 20-plusyear high school friend who is fighting ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). I have developed a close relationship with him and his parents. His mom has shared some of his comments with me, but he hasn’t shared those thoughts with me himself.

The comments are, “I want to die,” or, “I want to go home to God.” I think listening and being a supportive friend is what I can do for him, but I’m at a loss as to what to say to his mother.

I don’t know what advice to give her so she can be supportive in her conversations with her dying son. – Deep Sorrow

Dear Deep Sorrow: I agree that listening and being supportive is what you can do best for your friend. When the son raises the subject again with his mother, she should tell him that she loves him and will see that his wishes are carried out, even though losing him will be losing a part of herself.

When you see the mother again, ask if he has an advance directive for medical decisions in place.

In it, a person can specify that only palliative care is preferred.

Spinal fractures lead to loss of height in seniors Dear Doctor K: Why do so many people lose height and develop a stooped posture as they get older?

Dear Reader: You may be surprised by the answer. In many older people, loss of height and stooped posture results from fractures of the spine.

When you think of a bone fracture, you probably picture a long bone being snapped like a twig, as with a broken arm or leg. The vertebrae (bones of the spine) are not long bones. They are more like little cubes. When they break, they are compressed, not snapped. They get crunched down. Picture the way an upturned paper cup would be flattened when stepped on. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, AskDoctorK.com, that compares compressed and normal vertebrae.)

When the bones of your spine lose height, you lose height.

The bones of your spine hold you upright. Those bones (and other bones throughout the body) become weak and susceptible to fractures because of a bone-weakening condition known as osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is more common in women than men. It affects all of the spine bones and many other bones. Women who have had a

Though it may seem solid and unchanging, bone is continually demolished and reconstructed.

Inside all of your bones, even as you read this, some cells are adding new bone and other cells are eating away at the old bone.

Normally, the bone-building process is equal to the bone-destroying process, so that your bones are neither too thick nor too thin. With osteoporosis, bone reconstruction lags behind bone demolition.

Spinal fractures often occur without a traumatic cause like a fall. Even simple acts of daily life, such as bending over, coughing or lifting, can collapse a vertebra weakened by osteoporosis. A minor stress can be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

In many cases, vertebral fractures cause little or no pain.

The main clue that they have occurred is a gradual shrinkage or stooped posture. One or two compression fractures in the

spine may produce only a slight loss of height. But many fractures can profoundly affect appearance, mobility and health.

As the number of fractures increases, the spine becomes progressively more distorted. The upper body is thrust down and forward. The abdominal muscles sag, and the space between the ribs and the pelvis closes. The chest wall becomes cramped; abdominal organs are compressed and pushed forward. Breathing may become difficult and digestion may be impaired. Since walking erect is difficult, a cane or walker becomes essential.

Given the serious consequences of osteoporosis, you should take steps to prevent it: • Get enough calcium and vitamin D through foods and, if necessary, vitamin supplements.

• Regularly perform weight-bearing exercises.

• Don’t smoke.

• Avoid excess alcohol.

• If you have recently entered menopause, ask your doctor about preventive medications.

stolen ring for birthday Dr. Wallace: I’ve been dating Josh for more than a year. I like him, but he does things that I don’t approve of. I’m 18, and he is 20 and full of bad habits.

He smokes marijuana and tobacco cigarettes, and I hate to kiss him because he reeks of stale smoke. He drinks and doesn’t know when to quit. I can’t count the number of times he has become so drunk that I had to drive him home in his car.

My birthday was last week, and he gave me a beautiful ring. Since Josh rarely has money to spare, I asked him where he bought the ring and how much he paid for it. He said that his cousin works for a jewelry shop and told him to take it because Josh had fixed his cousin’s car. When I said it sounded like the ring was stolen, Josh said that the jewelry shop makes tons of money, and they wouldn’t miss the ring that probably only cost the jeweler $100. What should I do? – Brianna, El Paso, Texas Dear Brianna: I think you know what to do.

There’s no way you would feel comfortable wearing a stolen ring, and Josh’s reassurances – that the ring isn’t worth all that much and wouldn’t be missed – only make matters worse. A “gift” like this is an insult.

Return the ring and, after you’ve done that, you might want to give Josh his walking papers, as well. You’ve put up with enough from him. He smokes, does drugs and drinks himself comatose. Now he’s demonstrated that he is also a common thief. Staying with this loser is sure to lead to a life of misery.

The 27 years I spent with Bob were the best years of my life.

The only time I find significant age difference detrimental is when a teen still in high school is dating someone quite older.

The teen is often a girl, and the guy has difficulty finding someone his own age. But it’s very rare for a significantly older female to “hawk” a male teen.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have two beautiful, hardworking daughters we brought up as loving, respectful parents. Recently, “Kellie,” 25, got tattoos covering her right arm, leg and ankle as well as her shoulders.

They are visible unless she wears long sleeves and long pants.

This has ruined our relationship because it shows how little she thinks of us as parents, and how disrespectful of our feelings she is to put the tattoos where everyone can see them. She knows we don’t like tattoos because we have mentioned it to her and voiced our disappointment when she got the first one on her ankle.

I can’t sleep at night or look at my daughter knowing how little she cares about our feelings. I feel it’s a slap in the face that she doesn’t honor, respect or love us. What do you think?

South seems to have a textbook two-no-trump opening bid, but it is close to an upgrade to two clubs, with that good fivecard suit worth an extra point.

Declarer has only five top tricks: two spades and three hearts. It looks obvious to attack diamonds, where he has so many cards. And that is true, but it helps if he pauses to think about the right play at trick two.

Suppose South makes the natural-looking choice of a low diamond to dummy’s jack. Here, East wins the trick with his ace and returns a heart, after which declarer has no chance. If South then tries clubs, East takes the trick with the ace and leads his last heart.

True, if declarer starts at trick two with a club to dummy’s 10, that makes it harder for the defense. Whichever defender takes the trick must shift to spades.

However, South can leave the defenders with no chance if he leads the diamond king from his hand at the second trick. If East wins the trick, declarer takes East’s return and ducks a diamond to collect two spades, three hearts and four diamonds.

Alternatively, if East ducks the diamond king, South turns to clubs, taking two spades, three hearts, one diamond and three clubs.

On or about September 17, 2013, Kane County will submit a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the release of Community Development Block Grant funds under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, to undertake the following project: N. 15th St. Reconstruction Phase 2, St. Charles- The specific elements of this proposed project are the reconstruction of roadway, sidewalks, street crossing, storm structure and storm sewer, fire hydrants, and parkway restoration.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT Kane County has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment.

Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 is not required. Additional project information is contained in the Environmental Review Record (ERR) on file at the Kane County Office of Community Reinvestment, 719 Batavia Avenue, Geneva IL 60134, and may by examined or copied weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

PUBLIC COMMENTS Any individual, group, or agency disagreeing with these determinations or wishing to comment on the project may submit written comments to the Kane County Office of Community Reinvestment.

All comments received by September 16, 2013 will be considered by the county prior to submission of a request for release of funds.
