Museum brings Civil War to Batavia PARK DISTRICT DISH Brittany Bogue History returns to Batavia at a Civil War celebration to educate and involve the community on the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg. This free event will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 7 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 on the Batavia Riverwalk.

Trevor Steinbach, a Civil War re-enactor, will be playing Dr. Charles Bucher from Batavia. Dr. Bucher came to Batavia in the 1850s to become a tailor. Later on, he became a doctor and was highly involved in the Batavia community.

Steinbach has played an influential role in this event and will be talking about what the war was like as a Civil War soldier. The 8th Illinois Cavalry of Batavia was the first to fire shots at Gettysburg. This group was formed and organized at Latham Park in St. Charles, where a monument is placed.

“There are three things the community won’t want to miss,” said Steinbach, “the Civil War concert, surgical demonstrations with the medical group and learning how to be in the infantry by marching with the troops.”

This celebration is a great opportunity for residents to listen to ongoing presentations on Civil War medicine, artillery, how to fire a cannon and see reproductions of ob-

According to Steinbach, the Civil War changed the

attitude of people and created a solidified country. Citizens will be engaged from the start by experiencing a part of history right in their own community.

School spending stacks up Critics take aim at districts’ procurement card purchases, but officials defend program

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Batavia resident Carl Dinwiddie didn’t expect the pages upon pages he got when he asked Batavia Public School District 101 for a year’s worth of purchases made with its procurement cards.

He pulled out eight pages of restaurant expenditures alone. According to his research, the expenses included three purchases at Tribella Bar and Grill in Batavia totaling $1,027.37; 21 purchases at Panera Bread totaling $1,426.03; and 17 purchases at Dunkin’ Donuts totaling $838.

“I didn’t expect that they were so free and loose with the taxpayers’ dollar,” Dinwiddie said. “They were living high on the hog while taxpayers were cutting back and cutting back to pay their taxes.”

Dinwiddie and others have begun to question what school districts in central Kane County are buying with procurement cards, or P-Cards, and whether there is enough oversight to detect fraud, waste and abuse.

“I’m thinking there’s not enough accountability with the use,” said Patti Lopuszanski, a resident of St. Charles School District 303.

School administrators here said that employees are trained on how to use P-Cards, which are given to those responsible for some aspect of purchasing within a building.

workers, district officials said.

“Everything requires a receipt,” said Donna Oberg, assistant superintendent for business services at Geneva School District 304.

In cases where employees accidentally use a P-Card to make a personal purchase – they grab the wrong card at a store or forget to logout of their P-Card account while shopping online – the district is reimbursed, administrators said.

“They don’t get twice to say, ‘Oops, I forgot and used my P-Card,’ ” St. Charles Superintendent Don Schlomann said. “We will take those things away if you’re using it inappropriately.”

Administrators said P-Cards are a convenient way to buy curricular materials and consumable goods, such as supplies for family and consumer sciences classes; registering for workshops and conferences; and purchasing items online.

“It keeps our business office from ultimately hav-

ing to cut lots of little small checks,” said Jeff Schuler, superintendent of Kaneland School District 302.

Lopuszanski, who is researching P-Card use at several districts, said she is concerned about how much money is being spent on items unrelated to students, such as large steak dinners, when teachers put much of their own money into their classrooms.

For example, Batavia’s P-Card transactions for the last school year include a $297 dinner at Eddie Merlot in Louisville, Ky., for then-Superintendent Jack Barshinger, Chief Academic Officer Brad Newkirk and Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn. Six days later, district officials spent $1,930 on a dinner at Morton’s The Steakhouse at Wacker Place when they were in Chicago for a conference.

“They’re not holding back and going to Denny’s,” Lopuszanski said.

Although Batavia’s policies don’t include spending limits, Monn said, the school board’s Policy Committee recently talked about modifying the policy about board member development and what would qualify as legitimate expenses.

Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel said the new board – three new members were elected in April – will be sensitive to taxpayers’ concerns and that their money is being spent wisely.

“We have so many good policies in place, but I think what we want to do now is look with a more critical eye,” she said, adding there’s a desire to make professional development “very taxpayer appropriate while still getting the full benefit of the training.”

Supplying employees and visitors with snacks and bottled water are common courtesy for certain events, administrators said.

“If you’re sitting in a meeting and you’re there starting at 8 a.m. and going until noon, it’s not unusual to have something small for people to snack on,” Schlomann said.

“I think it’s a reasonable thing for people to have comfort.”

Schuler had similar views.

“If we’re hosting an event with visitors from our building, welcoming them in, I don’t think it’s uncommon in any industry to provide some level of hospitality,” Schuler said.

Both superintendents said the money spent on food accounts for a fraction of their districts’ total budgets.

“They certainly don’t add up to a large amount of purchases,” Schlomann said, noting booster clubs reimburse the district for food bought for some events, such as awards banquets. “Certainly, I don’t think it adds up to 5 percent of the total purchases you see there.”

Dinwiddie, however, doesn’t think taxpayers would be very happy if they saw the pages and pages of P-Card expenses, he said.

“It stacks up so much,” he said. “It’s like a sense of entitlement that’s grown over the last who knows how many years because nobody’s watching the store.”

Sugar Grove Legion, video gambling machine company in court battle

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove American Legion Post and a Schaumburg-based company that installs and operates video gambling machines will head to court this fall to ask a judge to decide their disagreement over whether the company has exclusive rights to install the electronic gambling machines in the Legion post’s bar.

Earlier this year, the company, Gaming and Entertainment Management, sued Sugar Grove American Legion Post 1271, claiming the post violated a contract the company held to serve as the exclusive operator of the post’s video gambling terminals.

GEM said it had purchased the contract from a different company, Illinois Gaming Investments, listed in court documents as being based in both

Collinsville and Chicago, in 2012.

IGI had earlier purchased the supplier contract from Twin Oaks Music, of Aurora, in 2010, for $620,000, according to a copy of a contract included in the court filing.

Twin Oaks had secured the contract with Post 1271 in April 2010.

However, earlier this year, Post 1271 indicated it would allow a different company, Tiger Amusements, of Sugar Grove, to install the machines in the Legion Post’s hall.

GEM filed suit in May asking a Kane County judge to declare its exclusive rights agreement to be valid and enforceable and to declare Post 1271 in breach of contract.

The Legion post filed a response earlier this month, asking the judge to dismiss the suit.

Lawyers for Post 1271 argue that the contract with GEM

is null and void because the contract was transferred to IGI at a time that IGI was not licensed by the state to operate the terminals, and at a time that the village of Sugar Grove had not made video gambling legal within its boundaries.

The Sugar Grove Village Board approved an ordinance permitting video gambling in January.

Since the contract with Twin Oaks and IGI was void, the contract could not be legally transferred to GEM, the Legion post’s lawyers argued.

GEM has argued the contract is enforceable, in part because the Illinois Gaming Board has allowed operators and establishments with “precursor contracts” in place or transferred to other operators to obtain video gambling licenses.

The two sides are scheduled to next appear in court in Geneva Oct. 3.

Mutchler gets salary hike, contract extended

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 board voted 5-2 Monday to increase Superintendent Kent Mutchler’s salary 2.5 percent, to more than $203,720 for the current school year, and to extend his five- Kent year contract Mutchler by one year to 2018.

Board members Leslie Juby and Michael McCormick voted “no.”

McCormick said his “no” vote was based on “dollars and cents” and not a reflection of Mutchler’s work.

“It was not in any way a statement of his efficacy,” McCormick said. “I think the district is doing great. I am completely proud of what he

and the administration and the teachers did with the district. But we are not out of the woods yet. This is about dollars and cents.”

In approving another year on his contract, the board also voted on his compensation for the current year, officials said.

Board President Mark Grosso said records show Mutchler’s 2012-13 base salary was $198,751. With the increase, his salary will go up nearly $5,000 for the 2013-14 school year.

“To me, it was just too lucrative,” McCormick said.

“I just was thinking it could be trimmed down a little.

We have a lot of debt to trim down.”

Juby said she voted against it because she does not support contracts that extend out five years.

Grosso said he voted in favor of the additional year in Mutchler’s contract and the pay increase because of the superintendent’s exceptional

performance.

“I voted yes because Dr. Mutchler has – especially in this last year – exceeded my expectations as far as performance,” Grosso said. “He was able to initiate the teacher evaluation process in District 304, and he did it with no increase in manpower … It was a long and arduous task to evaluate every teacher in the district, 400 certified staff.”

Grosso said other districts have had to hire additional staff to support the teacher evaluation process, which was mandated by the state.

Also a factor was the district’s emergency drill, Grosso said.

The drill was funded by a $375,000 federal Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools grant. The drill, which was staged in April, took about 2 ∏ years to coordinate and involved multiple local agencies.

“We had great success with

that emergency drill,” Grosso said.

Another reason, Grosso said, was the improvement in test scores, in particular the ACT scores showing Geneva High School’s graduating Class of 2013 achieved a composite score of 24.6.

The average composite ACT score for 2013 graduates statewide is 20.6. Nationwide, the composite score is 20.9, officials said.

Grosso said Mutchler’s compensation is tied to the district’s academic performance.

Mutchler said he appreciated the board’s support.

“I think it’s a wonderful board,” Mutchler said. “We work well as a team together.

You can’t base any of that on votes – they are going to vote for their own reasons. As a team, we work well together and [have] a common focus on students and keep moving the district forward.”

He was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Fargo, N.D., the son of Ruth (Jim

Walker) Roberts. Maynard was a veteran and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He received his bachelor’s, master’s and higher learning degrees from Northern Illinois University, and also attended classes at the University of Illinois.

Maynard had taught at Elgin Community College for 35-plus years and was head of the CAD/ CAM Department.

He had a passion for his Model A car collection, and loved camping and spending time outside with his family and many friends. Maynard will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann (Begalka) who he married on Sept. 1, 1956; four children, Donald (Kathy) Roberts of Cave Creek, Ariz., Rebecca (Dr. Barry) Davis of Boca Raton, Fla., Victoria (Larry Vivoda) Roberts of St. Charles and Robin (Dr. Bob Maganini) Roberts of South Elgin; 11 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jordon, Miles, Carrie, Mike, Sam, Larry, Eileen, Tony, Maynard and Elena; along with many nieces, nephews and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Patrick Walker.

A memorial celebration will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, with memories highlighted from 5 to 6 p.m., ending with a flag presentation.

Judge dismisses hidden camera lawsuit

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A judge on Tuesday dismissed two counts of a lawsuit concerning a hidden camera that a North Aurora couple says was placed in their bedroom by their neighbor’s 16-yearold son.

David and Katerina Speers originally filed the lawsuit in December against Scott and Teresa Thompson and their son, whom the Speers previously hired as a baby sitter, seeking more than $50,000 in damages for invasion of privacy.

Judge Edward Schreiber in April dismissed both counts of the lawsuit without prejudice, saying the plaintiff’s attorney failed to provide specific facts and damages.

David and Katerina Speers re-filed a lawsuit in July. Schreiber dismissed Tuesday two counts of the amended lawsuit without prejudice, and the Speers’ attorney, Michael Funkey, indicated that he planned to re-file another amended suit.

The Thompsons asked that two counts of the

amended suit be dismissed, and one of the counts centered around whether the Thompsons’ son could be sued because he is a minor and has been diagnosed with high-functioning Asperger syndrome.

Schreiber said he didn’t see any reason Scott and Teresa Thompson couldn’t be named in the suit, but said their minor son can’t be the only person named. On those grounds, Schreiber dismissed the first count of the suit.

Schreiber also dismissed the second count, which states that the Thompsons were negligent in the supervision of their minor son.

They contend that their neighbors knew their son, is prone to make poor decisions and they “failed to carefully supervise his activities and determine the location and use of the aforesaid camera,” according to court documents.

The Thompsons’ attorney, Thomas Scherschel, argued that in order to state a cause of action, the plaintiffs would need to prove that the defendants were aware that a “bad act” would occur while their son was using a

camera and a receiver capable of transmitting audio and images. Schreiber said the lawsuit showed that the Thompsons did know about the receiver, but did not clearly indicate whether they knew that their son also had a camera.

“The simple possession of a receiver is not a wrongful act,” Scherschel said.

He went on to say that the Thompons’ son had no disciplinary problems at school and “not so much as a parking ticket,” which he said shows that his parents couldn’t have predicted that their son would misuse the computer equipment in his possession.

“I don’t think I can draw a reasonable inference that he was going to use the camera for something harmful because he had never done that in the past,” Schreiber said.

“It’s just too great of a leap. ... There’s no indication that his parents even knew of a camera that went with the receiver.”

Schreiber gave Funkey 30 days to amend the lawsuit, which Funkey said he planned to do.

A status hearing was scheduled for Nov. 5.

Physicists from Fermilab and other institutions answer that question in an online video contest in which people can choose the video they like the most.

The contest is sponsored

by Symmetry Magazine, which Fermilab produces with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California.

U.S. must keep striving toward being ‘free at last’

By SHAW MEDIA Fifty years ago today, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of more than 200,000 people in Washington, D.C. The speech became the historic keynote of one of the largest political rallies for civil rights in U.S. history. But the sound bite history best remembers – “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” – came 11 minutes into King’s 16-minute speech.

King said much more that day. He spoke of the black communities living in poverty amid America’s material prosperity, and of the need to end segregation and discrimination immediately because freedom denied to one group in America is freedom denied to all.

King spoke of his belief in nonviolence and of his dream that Americans of all races one day would be united in the brotherhood of freedom.

Were he alive today, he no doubt would say that America’s journey to “the sunlit path of racial justice” is not over.

There has been progress. Jim Crow is dead. So are laws aimed at disen-

franchising blacks. Racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan have been marginalized. Police no longer would turn attack dogs and fire hoses on black protesters, as they did in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963.

But many blacks and other minorities still complain of police harassment for “driving while black” or “driving while brown.”

They still suffer the suspicions of strangers, as the case surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin showed.

The ghettoes remain, as does the segregation, which is enforced in practice rather than by law, and as much in the Chicago region as any in America.

Many of the neighborhoods on Chicago’s South and West sides are more than 90 percent black, along with many suburbs. In some of those neighborhoods, workers are needed to ensure that local children have “safe passage” to cross gang territories to get to school.

It is dramatically different from the walks and bus rides taken by many of the children in our communities to their neighborhood schools.

It is not equality of opportunity.

The effects of 300 years of slavery and state-sponsored discrimination can not be undone in a mere 50 years. But we must keep striving and working toward that day when we all will be “free at last.”

Many – if not a great majority of young folks today – know little about the torturous path of American history regarding race relations, or anything else for that matter. “The Butler” should be shown, early on, to every grammar school student in America. GENEVA – ComEd is seeking to run new high voltage power lines through the center of Kane County and DeKalb County to improve the regional power grid.

And some Kane County officials may be seeking a say in the utility company’s plans.

Tuesday, a representative of ComEd provided the Kane County Board with an overview of the utility’s so-called Grand Prairie Gateway project.

Under the proposal, ComEd would run about 57 miles of new high voltage power lines from its substation near Wayne, just east of the Kane County line, to its substation near Byron in Ogle County.

The project will cost about $200 million.

ComEd has said it and its partner in the project, PJM Interconnection, hope to have the new lines strung and operational by mid-2017.

The company has said the new power lines are needed to alleviate “congestion” in the power grid in northern Illinois.

ComEd unveiled proposed route possibilities at a series of open house meetings earlier this month, including at meetings in South Elgin and Sycamore.

Those meetings were attended by about 800 people combined, ComEd said.

The possible routes unveiled at those meetings called for the lines to run generally northwest from Wayne, through St. Charles, Elgin, Campton, Plato and Burlington townships. It would pass either near or through the communities of Valley View, South Elgin, Campton Hills, Plato Center and Burlington.

ComEd spokeswoman Sylvia Rogowski told County Board members that the utility will host more open house sessions in October. Exact dates and locations have not yet been set for those sessions.

She said ComEd will un-

veil its preferred route and alternate route at those meetings. Based on public comments, those routes could be altered before the utility submits its final proposal to the Illinois Commerce Commission in January 2014.

County Board members expressed few thoughts on the plan during the meeting.

But County Board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, expressed displeasure with the lack of input the County Board may have on the project, noting that the ICC would serve as the sole governing authority on the matter.

“I know exactly what’s going on here,” Smith said.

Rogowski indicated the County Board would be free to submit comments on the project both to ComEd and to the ICC when that opportunity arises.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler said letters soon would be sent to parents of Stewart students, explaining the option.

GENEVA – Nobody was injured during a house fire that took place at 1:26 a.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of Pinto Court in Geneva, Geneva Fire Department officials said in a statement.

The fire department responded to the house in the Eagle Brook subdivision after a neighbor on Fargo Boulevard called 911 after smelling smoke and seeing flames coming out of the home, according to the statement.

The first and second floors of the home were burning and flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived, but the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.

Fire Chief Steve Olson said no cause of the blaze has been determined yet.

“The damage was significant. It’s hard to determine what possibly caused it,” Olson said.

No estimate of damage was determined yet, either, Olson said.

The homeowners, Stuart and Stephanie Girgins, were not home at the time of the incident. Olson said the Girgins had no pets.

Geneva received assistance from Batavia, Elburn, St. Charles, West Chicago, Fermi Lab and North Aurora fire protection districts. South Elgin and Winfield fire departments provided apparatus and manpower to staff both of Geneva’s fire stations during the incident, the release states.

Traffic control, site security and the preliminary investigation were provided by Geneva police and Geneva Emergency Management Agency, officials said.

SUGAR GROVE – Five candidates have emerged for an open position on the Kaneland School District 302 Board.

And while the names of those who have applied won’t be revealed by the board, at least one is known – Sugar Grove resident Jerry Elliott announced he would be running during the public comment portion of Monday night’s school board meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

The board must appoint a replacement for Joe Oberweis, a former school board member who has resigned.

Oberweis is moving to Batavia, which is not in District 302.

Oberweis is the son of state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove.

Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, said the board would meet Sept. 7, a Saturday, to conduct in-

terviews in closed session.

She said she hopes the new member of the board will be seated for the Sept. 9 meeting.

Because Elliott made his application public, his candidacy is known, but Krauspe wrote in an email that the board is “not planning to release the names of applicants who were not selected.”

Krauspe said the board will be meeting with all five candidates, individually, and that all met the requirements of the position.

Because three current members on the board are from Blackberry Township, the new board member must not be from that township.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board talked in depth about the Adequate Yearly Progress standards, which were missed at three schools – Harter Middle School, and Blackberry Creek and McDole elementary schools.

Maple Park flushed with fun Organizers prepare more kid-friendly activities for Fun Fest

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – When planning this weekend’s Maple Park Fun Fest, organizers addressed the one complaint they often heard: the three-day festival lacked kid-friendly activities.

“We’ve added some children’s activities this year,” said Beth Miller, director of marketing and public relations.

Maple Park Fun Fest is set for 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday; and 7 a.m. to noon Monday. Most of the activities will happen on Main Street. Other activity locations are North Park, the Maple Park Firehouse and the Civic Center baseball fields.

On Saturday, the bike parade will return for its third year at 12:30 p.m., organizer Brittany Altepeter said. Children 14 years old and younger may participate. Two $25 cash prizes will be awarded – one for the most patriotic entry and another for the most creative, she said, adding all participants will get ice cream donated by the Cream King.

The new children’s activities will follow the festival’s ninth annual Toilet Bowl Challenge, which consists of teams of three racing a commode up and down the street.

The race is set for 1:30 p.m.

This event is sponsored by the Geneva Lions Club as part of its year-round community service in sight and sound projects to help protect the hearing of the public by early alert measures.

Those found to have potential problems will be advised to see an audiologist for further attention.

STILL ASCENDING Kaneland standouts seek worthy encores

APLE PARK – The IHSA girls tennis state tournament begins Oct. 24, and Kaneland juniors Sammie Schrepferman, Madi Jurcenko and Jelly Emmanouil intend to be factors there, as was the case last season.

Perhaps the toughest task between now and then for the Knights’ talented trio is to keep focused on the present.

Schrepferman, Kaneland’s No. 1 singles player, and Emmanouil and Jurcenko, the Knights’ top doubles tandem, seemingly left themselves little room for regular-season improvement after dominant sophomore seasons in the same roles.

“Our No. 1 doubles team, I think they went 31-0 last season in the regular season before they got into the sectional tournament – it is hard to improve on that,” Kaneland coach Tim Larsen said. “But I think one of the things we’re looking at is to make sure that every, single match that we play, we’re looking at shot selection, we’re looking at how crisp the

volleys are in the net. There’s constantly room to improve, even if their record can’t improve very much.”

Emmanouil and Jurcenko went 38-3 last season, setting a school record for most wins in a season in their first year as a doubles pairing.

They advanced to the sixth round of the consolation bracket at the state tournament.

This year, a top-8 state finish is a primary goal, but Jurcenko said they intend to remain focused during the regular season to guard against a slip-up.

“Every match is a mystery because a school could have two new freshmen coming in who’ve played tennis all their lives like we did, and they never have had a strong program before,” Jurcenko said. “That’s kind of exactly like our story. Our school didn’t really have a strong program, then we came in and no one knew what to expect. So with every match, we really just have to keep an open mind.”

Kaneland opened its season Monday against West Chicago, and Emmanouil and Jurcenko prevailed, 6-0, 6-0.

“They’re juniors now, they’re actual upperclassmen, so they’re hitting the ball a little harder than they were last year,” Larsen said.

“Where last year, they had to sort of make up for that with playing smart tennis, they can get a little more aggressive this year and push the issue a little bit earlier in the points. It’s going to be fun to

watch.”

On the singles side, Schrepferman was nearly as untouchable as Emmanouil and Jurcenko last year, rolling to a 30-win season.

Schrepferman, the lone Kaneland singles player to ever qualify for the state tournament, is looking for much of her progress this fall to come on the mental side.

“During the offseason, I definitely worked on my attitude and my emotions,” Schrepferman said. “I think that was one of the reasons people brought me up as captain this year, too. I just

showed that I’m here to play tennis, that’s what I focus on, and nothing else.”

Schrepferman was winless at the state tournament, and said her goal is to place among the top 32 if she’s able to qualify again.

She spent much of her summer playing and coaching tennis for a combined eight hours a day in the Bartlett area. Mentoring youth players was invigorating, she said.

“I liked to see those little kids just learning how to play tennis and enjoy it as much as I do,” Schrepferman said.

Vikings pull away in Game 2

By KEVIN SHEPKE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Geneva and Rosary girls volleyball teams looked to be close to midseason form in Tuesday’s season opener.

The Vikings had to stave off two rigorous rallies, not to mention a raucous crowd, to hold off the host Royals, 25-21, 25-22, Tuesday night in nonconference action.

“The crowd was pretty loud and I give credit to Rosary for having such a good crowd,” said Vikings senior middle hitter Taylor Marmitt, who finished with four kills and two digs, “but I think it just took a little time for us to get used to the surroundings and used to each other and once we did that, we played very well as a team.”

The first game saw nine ties and four lead changes with neither team gaining much of an advantage.

Setter Megan Cameron’s service ace helped Geneva finish off the first game with a 5-2 run. Cameron had five aces.

“Megan’s had a great serve since she was a little kid so there was no surprise there,” Geneva coach KC Johnsen said. “She was pretty agressive with it and was very accurate. We’re not going to ask her to go out and get five aces every

night, but we’ll count on her to score some points for us which she did a great job of tonight.”

In the second game, freshman Grace Loberg spotted the Vikings a quick 3-0 lead on back-to-back kills and Geneva later pushed its advantage to 11-4 on a blockkill from Marmitt.

Rosary pieced together a 9-6 run to pull within 17-13 on a Geneva hitting error.

Another Viking mistake and a kill from Michaela Ping closed the gap to 18-17, but Cameron was there with a service ace to put the momentum back in Geneva’s favor at 20-17 after Loberg’s sixth and final kill of the contest.

“It was great the way the game kept going back and forth and you’d think with freshmen and inexperienced players things would fall by the wayside,” Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann said. “But our girls stayed mentally strong and there was never really a huge gap of points, wich was great to see.”

Outside hitter Nina Valaitis led Rosary with 12 kills, eight digs and two blocks while Josephine Gallagher dished out 14 assists.

Courtney Caruso led Geneva with 14 assists as well, while Kelsey Wicinski contributed 11 digs.

Hartmann considered it a solid opening night despite the result.

“I hate to lose but it’s the first match and it’s early in the season,” Hartmann said.

“Our girls will definitely learn from this.”

8SPORTS SHORTS Cougars set loss record in walk-off defeat GRAND CHUTE, Wis. – Kane County fell, 8-7, to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday to set the franchise record for losses in a season.

Mike Garza hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the night inning to give Wisconsin the win in the series finale. The Cougars (22-41, 52-77) eclipsed the previous losing-season mark set by the 1992 club that went 61-76.

In his first pro start, the Cougars’ Nathan Dorris pitched three innings and allowed just two hits. Overall, he was charged with six runs but only two were earned as he walked a season-high four.

Santos commits to Oakland

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Sidney Santos stuck with basketball through a dreary first couple years of high school in which the Geneva forward suffered a pair of ACL tears.

Her perseverance was rewarded this week after Santos accepted a scholarship offer to play Division I basketball at Oakland (Mich.).

“Looking back, I know I had more struggles than most athletes do but [fighting through] it is was worth it,” Santos said.

“I’m thankful to be able to follow my dream and play Division I basketball, and just for

all the people who supported me through it and everything like that. I’m so grateful and thankful for everything that has happened because it made me who I am today.”

S a n t o s made her high school basketball debut last Sidney Santos season as a junior, moving from the forward spot to point guard to help the Vikings cope with Michaela Loebel’s season-ending injury. Santos averaged 8.8 points a game while leading Geneva with 4.2 assists a game.

The 6-footer expects to move back to her niche as a versatile forward who can score both facing the basket and in the paint. She said she chose Oakland over TCU, East Carolina, Illinois-Chicago and Northern Kentucky.

Oakland is the newest member of the Horizon League. The Golden Grizzlies have a firstyear coach, Jeff Tungate, who previously was associate head coach of Oakland’s men’s team.

“Oakland runs through his blood so he’s not really new to Oakland,” Santos said. “They were always there during recruiting. They were wonderful.

I’ve really grown to love them.

That was the place that was

best for me education-wise, where I would fit in best playing-wise and I loved the staff and the campus and everything Oakland has to offer. It just ended up being the place I really wanted to go.”

Santos said she committed Monday night and upon arriving at school Tuesday, Vikings girls basketball coach Sarah Meadows already had a congratulatory Oakland poster in her office.

Santos’ older sister, Geneva graduate Ashley Santos, plays collegiately at Marquette, and Sidney Santos said Tungate already has mused about trying to get Marquette on Oakland’s schedule.

St. Charles North stymied by Neuqua Valley in opener

By JAKE POWERS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Despite varying offensive setups, swift attacking, and aggressive defending, the St. Charles North boys soccer team was unable to hold off Neuqua Valley, dropping its opening-night match, 3-1, Tuesday.

Neuqua Valley applied pressure early, forcing senior goalkeeper and captain Billy Larsen to make two lunging saves within the first 15 minutes. The North Stars gained momentum after Larsen’s

stout goalkeeping, turning several intercepted passes into scoring opportunities.

North’s Phillip LeGare, forward and senior captain, led the offensive charge with his high energy and feel for the defense.

“Me and [senior forward Adam Hoffman] try to work together in that I play off of him, he plays off of me,” LeGare said. “We look for our center-mids to look over the top, you know, since me and Adam are pretty fast [and] we can beat defenders.”

Neuqua struck first on an Austin Flatt goal with 1:54 left

in the first half, set up by an intercepted pass near North’s box.

Jake Loncar, a senior forward for the Wildcats, credited the team’s sharp distribution for its success.

“The communication was good, and we connected on a lot of good passes,” Loncar said.

Numerous possession changes marked the first 20 minutes of the second half until Loncar scored a goal after winning a battle for the ball near the net.

Despite opportunities being available, the North

Stars were unable to punch in goals, with the lone exception of a LeGare goal midway through the second half.

“We’re definitely gonna work on finishing – we had trouble with that tonight,” LeGare said.

But the problem for Geneva is the Vikings’ next two opponents, Wheaton North and Batavia, are arguably even better.

If the Vikings fall short in Oswego, it would require a heavy-duty upset to avoid an 0-3 start, which would put Geneva’s playoff hopes on life support before the leaves start turning. The Vikings would love to distance themselves

from a disappointing 2012 season, but their clean slate could have a short shelf life if one of the youngest teams Rob Wicinski has coached can’t post an opening night ‘W.’ If that sounds like a lot of pressure, the Vikings can take solace in knowing that their buddies in St. Charles ought to feel a similar sense of urgency.

St. Charles East coach Mike Fields hopes to start a long-term series with South Elgin, beginning with Saturday’s opener, saying the pro-

grams are similar and should play competitive games.

That’s a fair assessment, making East’s opener the kind of toss-up game that has the potential to tip the scales of a season in either direction.

The Saints drew a beastly UEC crossover this season – a Week 4 visit to Neuqua Valley – meaning East has less room for error in nonconference play than most of their conference brethren. With opponents like Neuqua and Batavia to contend with later on, banking some early wins

While kickoff finally arriving ends one countdown, it begins another toward the postseason, an especially meaningful transition this year for three teams in the Tri-Cities.

The Batavia-Glenbard North game Friday shapes up as a tremendous matchup. As Batavia coach Dennis Piron put it, interested spectators “better get here about noon” to secure their seats.

But the Bulldogs, unless they fall miles short of their lofty expectations, would be able to brush aside a loss to the defending Class 8A state runner-up without much damage done.

That’s not necessarily the case for Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North, each of which face key season openers in the context of their playoff aspirations.

Let’s start with the Vikings, who visit Oswego on Friday night.

Oswego, which walloped Geneva at Burgess Field to

is crucial.

As for East’s crosstown rival, St. Charles North, the tail end of former coach Mark Gould’s tenure illustrates how back-breaking it can be to falter out of the gate.

The North Stars went 4-2 in UEC River play last season yet still failed to reach the playoffs, having dropped their two nonconference games to open up, plus a frustrating Week 9 UEC crossover against South Elgin.

Nonconference woes have plagued North during its current, three-year postseason drought, and that’s a trend new coach Rob Pomazak needs to change – starting Friday at Elk Grove – if the North Stars are going to return to a postseason-caliber program.

It’s understandable that Friday’s Batavia-Glenbard North showdown generates much of the local chatter leading up to Friday night. A win for the Bulldogs would be something to crow about, but an opening loss would be no reason to sweat.

That’s a luxury the other Tri-Cities teams don’t have.

Offense will be better, but how about defense?

LAKE FOREST – With all of the hubbub (I had to try and use that word) surrounding the “new” Bears offense, it is time we all remind ourselves the 2013 Bears eventually will go as far as their defense takes them.

I have already bought into the offense. With the addition of Marc Trestman, Jermon Bushrod, Marcellus Bennett and the maturation of Alshon Jeffery, they already are much better. Obviously, I can’t predict whether or not Jay Cutler will take care of the football, and they are dangerously thin at quarterback, receiver and offensive line. But if the offense stays healthy, it will be the best we’ve seen in Chicago since 1995.

Ask yourself this about the defense. At what position(s) is the defense more talented than last year or in recent seasons?

Are the Bears improved over last year or even as good at left defensive end with a choice of either Corey Wootton or Shea McClellin over the departed Israel Idonije? Izzy was the Bears’ second-leading pass rusher last season with 7½ sacks – only Julius Peppers had more with 11½ – and was arguably their best defensive lineman against the run.

Wootton could be the Bears’ breakout player of the year this year but he hasn’t done it yet.

He did have seven sacks last season while McClellin had only 2½ and is yet to offer any real evidence he will be more of a factor this year.

Where is Idonije’s lost production coming from?

Nate Collins had a nice preseason filling in for the concussed Henry Melton. But the cupboard is so bare at defensive tackle after Collins that it appears undrafted rookie free-agent Zach Minter will be the choice as the fourth tackle.

Be as excited as you like about rookie middle linebacker Jon Bostic. But are the Bears actually better with Bostic in place of Brian Urlacher, and Lance Briggs forced to do Urlacher’s job as well as his own?

James Anderson has been fine at Nick Roach’s “sambacker” spot, but he’s not an upgrade and still has plenty to prove.

Now, let’s peek into the

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush secondary, which NFL quarterbacks are going to be doing all season long. Major Wright and Chris Conte both are fine at safety against the run. We’ve known that for a while. But will they be better against the pass?

What is really disconcerting in the defensive backfield is the lack of depth. The loss of Kelvin Hayden for the season leaves the untested Isaiah Frey at the “nickel,” and behind the five starters there is really no one to feel good about should one of the frontliners get nicked.

Asked what is left to do heading into the final preseason game, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said: “Everything. We’re a work in progress and we talk about getting better each and every day.

It’s a constant push to try and get better individually and as a unit. We’re constantly trying to get better, because if you don’t do that you’re going to be in trouble.”

To be clear, Tucker wasn’t predicting trouble or expressing concern. His answer was basically coach-speak, but the words could not have rung any more true.

San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay, Atlanta, New Orleans, Washington and the New York Giants all are going to boast offenses capable of scoring points by the bushel.

As improved as the Bears might be on offense, will they be favored in a point-scoring matchup over any of them?

Of that group, only San Francisco and Seattle should be clearly better than the Bears on defense.

The good news these days is that, finally, the defense won’t be asked to get the job done alone. There is no bad news yet, but the question is will the defense still be able to make sure the job gets done?

Tough break won’t stop Blanchard VIEWS Tom Musick LAKE FOREST – Matt Blanchard will be back.

Maybe it will be with the Bears. Maybe it will be with another NFL team. But Blanchard’s broken knuckle on the ring finger of his left hand will heal, and the quarterback who grew up in Lake Zurich and honed his skills at Wisconsin-Whitewater will be back.

“Minor speed bump in the grand scheme of things,” Blanchard said after what proved to be his final practice.

“Things will work out. I know everything happens for a reason.”

That was Monday.

On Tuesday, Blanchard was released.

The technical term is that Blanchard was waived-injured, which means the quarterback agreed to an injury settlement upon his departure.

The Bears needed to trim their roster to 75 players by 3 p.m.

Tuesday – they will need to slice it to 53 players by 5 p.m.

Saturday – and decided that they could not afford to wait on a green quarterback with a bum hand.

Bears coach Marc Trestman did not rule out the possibility of Blanchard returning to the Bears, although he reportedly will not be eligible to do so until after Week 10.

I think we resonated that through the times we’ve talked here. Really, we’ll see how it goes as we move forward. There are so many variables between now and then.”

Maybe Blanchard knew that this week would bring disappointment.

After the end of Monday’s practice at the Walter Payton Center, Blanchard lingered on the field long after most of his teammates had left. Eventual-

ly, only two players remained: Blanchard and rookie receiver Marquess Wilson, who played a simple yet strange game of catch.

Wearing a soft cast on his left hand and holding a football in his right hand, Blanchard cocked his arm and fired hard passes to Wilson.

In return, Wilson lobbed slow, arching passes that Blanchard caught carefully with his lone good hand.

At least this marked action for Blanchard, who spent the first part of practice watching teammates Jay Cutler, Josh McCown, Jordan Palmer and Trent Edwards take turns in

position drills.

“It’s tough,” Blanchard said. “Any injury of any kind puts you in the situation where you have to be a support base to everyone else there. It’s unfortunate you have to watch practice and you have to watch other guys getting reps, but you’ve got to deal with the cards you’re dealt sometimes.”

Blanchard, 24, held some promising cards before his luck changed.

In the Bears’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, Blanchard shook off an interception to complete 15 of 18 passes for 194 yards. He

was slated for another significant amount of playing time in the team’s second preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, but he was injured after his first pass attempt – a completion to running back Michael Ford.

As the preseason unfolded, Blanchard said, he was feeling better than ever.

“The confidence level is night and day from where it was last year,” said Blanchard, who spent most of last season on the Bears’ practice squad.

“And as far as grasping this offense, I felt really good about going into this preseason. I think it showed in Carolina.”

Then came the broken knuckle. The “minor speed bump,” as Blanchard called it.

But Blanchard is used to overcoming setbacks. He never was a prized college recruit at Lake Zurich. He never heard his name called in the NFL draft. Yet even as a teenager, Blanchard believed that he was destined to play in the NFL. “I was very under-recruited – I only got D-II offers,” Blanchard said. “But I always felt as though I was going to get a shot at some point. It was just a weird feeling in me that I felt something good was going to happen.”

He was right.

He’ll be back.

Marshall looks to gain reps, focus after surgery

That might not be a huge concern, since it’s only the preseason, but Marshall’s comments to reporters at Halas Hall on Tuesday got everyone’s attention.

“No, I haven’t,” Marshall said when asked if he’s gotten enough reps. “It’s one of those things where I’m just trying to get healthy for Week 1. So, you’ve got to have a game plan coming off surgery, a third hip surgery.

“I’m not where I want to be right now. It’s a little frustrating, but we’ll see.”

Marshall did play in 33 snaps in Oakland, the sec-

ond-most of any skill player (Martellus Bennett was in on 35 snaps). His readiness – or lack thereof – for the start of the season, though, is now in focus.

“I think it’s more of a conditioning [thing]. So it’s one of those things where you may be rushed a little bit and some people might think I need to be farther on than where I am,” he said. “So, it’s a little

frustrating not being where I want to be right now and maybe being pushed a little bit, so we’ll see.”

Jay Cutler, who knows Marshall better than maybe anyone on the team, said he noticed that Marshall is not where he can be from a conditioning perspective.

“Yeah, you can see it. Conditioning-wise he’s a little behind. He knows where to be.

It’s just a matter of him getting out there and pushing his hip through things when it gets tight a little bit,” Cutler said.

“I think once we start getting into a routine, we’ll really figure out exactly what routes we want him on and where we want him on the field.

“Hopefully, things will sharpen up for his hip for him and he’ll be able to make it go.”

Film highlights unlikely opera stars THE WASHINGTON POST Julie Cohen and Kamal Khan met in elementary school in Northern Virginia’s Fairfax County about 40 years ago. Today, Cohen, 49, is the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based founder of BetterThanFiction Productions, a documentary film company; Khan is the director of the University of Cape Town Opera School.

“I Live to Sing,” a feature-length documentary directed and produced by Cohen, focuses on three of Khan’s black students who made their way from humble beginnings in often poverty-ridden townships to excel in opera – an art form most closely associated with white, elite audiences and performers.

“I Live to Sing” was shown Aug. 21 during the World Music and Independent Film Festival in Washington.

What follows is an edited transcript of a conversation between Cohen and The Washington Post’s Eva Rodriguez, who met in the 1990s when both worked for Legal Times and Court TV.

Eva Rodriguez: How did you come to do this project?

Julie Cohen: It was just the fortuitous situation of knowing Kamal Khan. I met Kamal in third grade at Pine Ridge Elementary School in Fairfax County. He was unusual in that even at age 9 his prime interests seemed to be opera, classical music, Shakespeare. These are interests that when you’re 40 and living in New York are not so strange! He became James Levine’s assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera and he still now does a lot of conducting internationally, although his home base is at the University of Cape Town. In the

Knowing what Kamal was up to, I realized that his fascinating work – from an artistic, political and social context – was just the sort of thing I was interested in making films about.

ER: Why is it interesting to you to document performing artists?

JC: We’re all so steeped in the relatively small circle of people who become really famous or really big deals. But it’s also, I think, wonderful to see the work of and hear the life stories of the majority of performing artists who are toiling away, many of whom are supremely talented, but the world doesn’t necessarily get to know.

ER: Tell me about the lives of the three young singers featured in your film.

JC: Thesele Kemane [a bass baritone] came to Cape Town from a relatively small township in the northern part of the country.

Thesele’s dad worked as a janitor at Standard Bank for several decades and was

a ground-level, grass-roots anti-apartheid activist for many, many years. He was not Nelson Mandela. He was not Desmond Tutu. But he was part of the very large number of South Africans who became actively involved in civil disobedience and the anti-apartheid movement.

Thesele developed an interest in music through a community choir. The community choirs in South Africa are a really, really big deal. They have national competitions where choirs are competing against each other for prizes. His parents were happy, like “Oh, he’s a great singer. That’s terrific.”

But much to their chagrin, he decided that this is what he wanted to do professionally.

ER: And Linda, the young soprano featured in the film?

JC: Linda Nteleza comes from a huge township adjacent to Cape Town that has a lot of problems – poverty, health-care issues, education issues, huge unemployment.

I believe it has the fastest-growing rate of tuberculosis in the world, and

Linda has suffered from the consequences of that. Linda learned to sing in school and then followed by her work in community choir, and through the teachers and coaches learned about University of Cape Town and its music program. She lived only [a] half-hour from the university but hadn’t been aware that music was something that was out there.

She was encouraged to go and apply. I think she didn’t expect to get it, but to her joy and amazement she did.

ER: Were you an opera fan before this?

JC: [Laughs] I ... must ... confess that I was not only not an opera fan, but really almost actively probably disliked opera before this project. That’s actually not something that I mentioned to Kamal when I was pitching the idea of “Can I follow your program around? Can I bring cameras to your school?” [Laughs] ... But as often when you delve into different art forms, particularly classical art forms that you are ignorant of, the more you get to know it, the better it starts to sound.

Fear of 911 publicity causes some not to make call Dear Abby: A friend of mine was a victim of domestic violence.

When I asked her why she didn’t phone 911 for help, her response was, “They play those 911 calls on the radio all the time.” She didn’t want her prominent husband’s career damaged by adverse publicity.

Today, a group of us discussed the issue over breakfast. Many of the women said that because of the popularity of 911 calls being broadcast on the Internet, radio and TV, they’d be hesitant to phone for help when needed, too.

Abby, someone is going to suffer serious harm out of fear that their call for help will be publicized. Do you know what can be done about this new “drama entertainment?” I wouldn’t want my terrified call heard by the public either, so I’d take my chances without calling for help. I just hope I don’t wake up dead one day as a result. – Publicity-Shy In Florida Dear Publicity-Shy: Nothing can be done about “drama entertainment” as long as the public has an appetite for it. The reason for the

In the case of domestic violence, calling 911 is the lesser of two evils. Out-of-control abusers have been known to maim and kill the ones they “love.” Ask yourself if your friend’s husband’s career was worth risking her life for. It makes more sense to risk a 911 call being broadcast than to have cameras and TV reporters camped on your lawn while the EMTs or the coroner carry your battered, bloody body out on a gurney.

MRI for prostate cancer can reveal extent of its spread Dear Doctor K: I recently had a prostate biopsy and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now my doctor wants to do an MRI. Why? What new information will the MRI provide?

Dear Reader: I can understand why you’re puzzled. A biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing prostate cancer, so why do you need any other test?

In a biopsy, bits of tissue are removed from different areas of your prostate gland. They are examined with a microscope to see if there are cancerous cells. If the biopsy shows cancer, the diagnosis has been made. The biopsy also can help determine how aggressive the cancer will be and how likely it is to spread.

The biopsy tells you for sure if you have prostate cancer. But it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about how bad the cancer is and what kind of treatment you should receive. Once you’ve been diagnosed, decisions about your treatment will depend on the stage of your cancer.

“Staging” is a way of describing how far your cancer has spread.

Ultrasound imaging tests have traditionally been used to determine how much of the prostate gland is filled with

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff cancer, and whether the cancer has spread to the tissues next to the prostate. A newer kind of MRI called endorectal MRI may give a clearer picture than ultrasound of the local spread of prostate cancer. That’s important because, in the majority of men diagnosed with prostate cancer, it exists in multiple locations in the prostate gland.

This new kind of MRI is not yet widely available, but it may be available to your doctor.

Bone scans can determine if prostate cancer has spread through the blood to bones. MRI scans of the bones are another technique for detecting the spread of cancer.

The pictures produced by the MRI will tell your doctor whether and to what extent your cancer has spread to surrounding tissue, lymph nodes and other parts of your body. Your doctor will use these details along with other information to predict how aggressive your tumor is and what treatment will be best.

Many new techniques are under development to improve the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer. New types of blood tests can spot prostate cancer cells that have escaped from the prostate gland and are circulating in the blood and threatening to lodge in bones.

Biopsy specimens are not only being examined under a microscope; they also are being studied to see what genes are turned on and off in the cancerous tissue.

These “gene expression” patterns are likely to point to the best treatment.

Finally, new MRI imaging techniques are in development.

For example, doctors may inject a contrast agent, such as a dye, into the bloodstream. This dye is absorbed by the prostate. Cancerous tissue absorbs the agent differently than other tissue.

During a contrast-enhanced MRI, the cancerous tissue appears brighter than non-cancerous tissue, making it easier to identify and treat.

South should hope that West has a singleton eight or nine.

Declarer plays a club to dummy’s 10, then leads specifically the spade 10. If East plays low, South runs the 10. If East covers with his jack, declarer wins with his ace (or queen) and happily notes the fall of the eight on his left.

He returns to the dummy with a club, plays a spade to his seven, and can claim.
