Thousands gathered Sunday on Third Street in Geneva to take in the sights of nearly 300 classic cars, including some dating from the earliest days of the automobile, at the annual Concours d’Elegance Geneva car show. Sunday’s installment of the classic car show was again expected to draw more than 15,000 spectators from throughout the Chicago area to downtown Geneva.

Vintage car enthusiasts flock to Geneva for annual Concours show

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For some, the vintage cars lining the streets of Geneva’s downtown were novelties, historical artifacts of interest from a time long past.

But for Clark Andrews, many of the cars that drew thousands of people to the blocks surrounding Third Street Sunday were something more real, devices that stirred his own memories from a life mostly lived.

“These are all sort of remembrances of the past – my past – mostly from the 1940s and ’50s,” said Andrews, of Chicago.

“And it’s interesting to resurrect those memories, because they’re mostly good,” he added, with a laugh.

Sunday, Andrews was one among a crowd believed to number more than 15,000 to pack Geneva’s streets for the annual Concours d’Elegance.

Now in its 9th year, the car show has regularly drawn thousands of spectators to take in the sights of almost 300 classic cars, including dozens of very rare models from many different eras.

The free event again drew car enthusiasts and the curious from throughout the Chicago area to Geneva.

Concours organizer Bob Joynt of Batavia said the event in the past has drawn crowds estimated to number about 18,000. And under warm, sunny late summer skies, Joynt said he believed the crowds might even surpass the show’s best days.

“This is not your typical car show or cruise-in,” said Joynt. “This is something far more special, essentially a display of engineering excellence from throughout the history of the automobile.”

Joynt, for instance, was displaying his 1920 Locomobile.

Within two blocks of where Joynt was showing his car on Third Street were dozens of other cars dating from the so-called Brass Era, including models from Ford, Mercer, Austin, Chevrolet, Packard, Dodge and Stanley, among others.

The Packards, in particular, were the favorites of twin siblings Olivia and Evan Prendergast, 11, of Wilmette, who had come to Geneva with their father, Mike, to celebrate his birthday.

“All the cars are really beautiful,” said Evan.

“Especially the really old ones,” Olivia added.

Their father said Sunday marked their first trip to the Concours d’Elegance show. But he said it likely won’t be their last.

“I think we might become regulars,” Mike Prendergast said.

While Andrews enjoyed the Brass Era cars, he said he was particularly delighted to find a 1951 Jaguar roadster.

“My wife has asked me in quieter moments, if we hit the lottery, and I had a choice of any car, what would I get?” Andrews said. “And without hesitation, I said it would be an early ’50s Jaguar roadster, just like that one.

“Just beautiful automobiles.”

Building community Kaneville celebrates summer with annual fest

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Otto Rizzi didn’t intend to participate in an ice cream eating contest Saturday.

But when Rizzi, 8, of Kaneville, learned of the approaching contest from a friend, the thought of eating as much ice cream as he could, as fast as he could, had a certain appeal to it.

“I just did it for fun,” Rizzi said. “My friend, Chuck, told me about it about 30 minutes before it started.

“And then I really wanted to play.”

Saturday afternoon, Rizzi walked away with a certificate securing him a free Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae from Colonial Cafe, as one of the winners of the ice cream eating contest, hosted by Colonial, during Kaneville Fest.

The festival kicked off Thursday with a library book sale and continued Friday with community garage sales and an outdoor movie at Hill’s Country Store. Kaneville Village President Pat Hill, owner of the store, estimated about 100 people turned out for the screening.

Hill, who served as lead organizer for the festival, said she expected a crowd of about 500 people Saturday night for the dinner and fireworks show.

And in a village with a population of a little less than 500, Hill said, that continues to be a remarkable achievement.

“It’s what we normally see for an event like this,” Hill said. “It’s just a great, old tradition that we just like to keep going.”

She noted the event draws visitors from several nearby communities, including Elburn, Sugar Grove, Hinckley and Big Rock, and the surrounding countrysides.

Jon Diaz, who lives between Elburn and Kaneville, said his family regularly has visited Kaneville Fest each year for more than a decade – at least to eat dinner and watch fireworks.

“We’re always here for Kaneville Fest,” Diaz said.

“It’s a nice time, mainly because it always seems like the town is so into it.”

ST. CHARLES – Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said detectives are continuing to investigate the death of a South Elgin woman who died Friday after she was found hanged in a cell at the Kane County jail.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Terry Hart, 52, of the 600 block of Woodland Drive, South Elgin.

The sheriff’s office said the woman had been in custody since July 31 at the Kane County Adult Justice Center near the corner of Route 38 and Peck Road in St. Charles.

A correctional officer was making a routine check At about 1:45 p.m. Friday when the officer discovered the woman to be “unresponsive,” the sheriff’s office said.

Officers at that time performed CPR on the woman, Perez said, until she was transported by ambulance from the jail to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 5

p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

“Our condolences go out to the family,” Perez said.

“It’s a terrible thing whenever something like this happens.”

Perez said the sheriff’s office has notified the Illinois Department of Corrections of the death.

Kane County court records indicate Hart had been convicted of aggravated battery Aug. 13, and was still in custody at the county jail as she awaited sentencing.

The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office, Perez said.

Perez declined to discuss details in the case, saying investigators have yet to interview correctional officers, review video surveillance footage from within the jail, or review medical records.

He said the matter is not being investigated as a crime.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said his office is also handling the death investigation.

An autopsy was performed Friday, and determined the woman died as a result of “asphyxiation by hanging.”

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Similar to the Kane County Cougars being a stepping stone to the major leagues, Sunday’s Peapod Half Marathon prepared competitors for a bigger challenge in running – a full marathon.

Many runners in the 13.1 mile race, won by Lars Juhl of Chicago, used the race to get ready for marathons held in October, said race director Danny Delgado.

“This race has built a reputation as a great warm-up for Chicago and Milwaukee marathons,” Delgado said. “We have runners from 10 different states and all over the Chicagoland area.”

Runners took a slightly different course than in the past few years to avoid blocking Main Street.

“The course got faster,” said Delgado. “We eliminated the hill up Houston [Street] and the last two-and-a-half

miles are all downhill.”

Surprisingly, results were higher.

Juhl, who took third in 2010, crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 14 minutes and .06 of a second, 4:30 off of last year’s top time of 1:09:36.

Joshua Stein of Forest Park came in second at 1:15:37, and Bolingbrook’s Nathan Kennedy time of 1:17:08 earned him third place.

Amanda Hooper took top honors among the female runners. The Carpentersville resident finished in 1:25:44, a minute and half slower than the best female time in 2012.

Geneva’s Elena Shemyakina took second in 1:26:17. Third place went to Ashley Molidor of Downer Grove, who finished in 1:26:41.

“It’s my personal best, so I’m happy with it,” said Shemyakina, who estimated that she has run in 25 half marathons and 34 full ones. “It’s pretty good when you get [a personal record] at 54.”

race’s youngest runner, finished in 2:19:54 to earn fourth place in the males 19 and younger division. It was his third half marathon.

“My time was a very big improvement over the first two,” said the fifth-grader.

Chuck Amenta of Geneva said the race was a great tuneup for a marathon.

“A bunch of my triathlon friends use this race as a long training run for the marathons,” said Amenta as he cheered his friends on from Church Street.

This year’s half marathon is the fifth time Peapod, an online grocery delivery service headquartered in Skokie, has sponsored the event.

“Peapod is a local company so we wanted to be part of the community,” said Peapod spokesman Brad Porter. “This a good venue to become part of the community so that is why we have sponsored it.”

With the loss, the Cougars (22-39, 53-74) are officially

eliminated from playoff contention with eight games to go in the 2013 regular season.

The Cougars stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Oliver Zapata was left at third in the fifth inning.

Willson Contreras was stranded at third with two outs in the sixth after driving

home the Cougars’ only run of the game with a double.

Carlos Escobar lined a leadoff double in the seventh but was stranded on third. In the eighth, Gioskar Amaya and Contreras were left at second and third when Marco Hernandez lined out to the third baseman.

If they’re not as good today as the veterans who’ve been sent away, there is still the chance they’ll be better than those players ever were with more time to develop.

To be clear, any of Wilson, Anderson, Harden, Washington, Onobun, Maneri and Adams could be sent packing as soon as this Friday or Saturday. But even if it’s just a few more days, the organization’s investment of time and resources is better spent on them than the veterans they’ve outlasted.

Advantage number two for many in the younger group is this coaching staff and front office has an investment in them it did not have in the others.

Phil Emery spent draft choices on Hardin, Washington and Wilson and as such they will get extra consideration. As an undrafted gem Emery discovered last year, Anderson will get the benefit of the doubt as well.

Fair or not, that’s life in the NFL. I asked Aromashodu the other day if having been through the process multiple times makes it any easier.

“You get to understand the process a little better, I guess you can cope with whatever

happens a little better from having been through it but it’s pretty much the same feeling, you just understand it better.”

I couldn’t shake the feeling he saw the handwriting on the wall when I asked him how the competition looks and he told me “Marquess Wilson is definitely doing a good job as a young player and I think he’s stepping up and doing what the coaches expect of him.”

Therein lies the rub. The younger less experienced players just need to do what’s expected of them to hang around. Journeymen veterans have to make themselves indispensable and Aromashodu, Zbikowski, Moore and Pope couldn’t.

Moore appeared to have the best chance of this group of sticking, consistently running with the twos and at times the ones in practice. But Washington is a freak of an athlete and classic underachiever in college who if the light goes on could eventually be a difference maker. Moore was never going to beat him out if all he offered was a dependable if not spectacular number four at defensive end.

Could any of the four veterans still catch on elsewhere?

Sure, there’s always a chance.

But the outcome is likely to be the same while the young Bears they leave behind can still dream big, at least for a few more days.

The road to a final NFL roster each August is a mean street. For NFL veterans in their third or fourth stop and hoping for one last grasp at glory, the ride all too often ends with the gruesome sound of the ax dropping on their pro football careers.

Such was the fate of Bears veterans Devin Aromashodu, Tom Zbikowski, Kyle Moore, Leonard Pope when the Bears announced their first round of training camp cuts on their way to the 75-player roster limit.

What is particularly painful for these four is the knowledge they weren’t axed because the Bears have better players at their positions, they took the fall because the Bears have younger and lesser-known players on the roster.

Anyone who’s been with the team since training camp began knows it would be wrong to say Marquess Wilson and Joe Anderson are clearly better than Aromashodu today. Brandon Hardin may not even be as good as Zbikowski.

Cornelius Washington clearly is not as prepared to contribute today as Moore; and Fendi Onobun, Steve Maneri and Kyle Adams could all still learn a lesson or two from Pope.

The reason these four veterans got their walking papers is because their “ceilings” have been reached and we know we’ve seen the best that each has to offer.

The younger players they leave behind had two big advantages over the veterans in their roster battles and the

six innings for the Timber Rattlers (28-34, 57-70) and allowed just one run while striking out six and walking none.

Lefty Michael Strong (S, 1) danced around trouble in his three shutout inning out of the bullpen while striking out five.

Dear Abby: I have been married for 29 years and I’m having concerns about my husband. I’m not sure what to make of the fact that he is becoming effeminate.

For many years he has shaved his underarms, legs, etc., to the point that he is completely hairless. He recently lost some weight and is joining a gym. He wears women’s stretch tights and a girdle to work out, because he says it helps him sweat around his middle.

He is also very concerned about exfoliating the bottom of his feet and putting lotion on his legs.

He says these things shouldn’t bother me, but they do. I don’t know what to make of it, and when I try to talk to him about my concerns, he blows me off.

Do other men do this kind of stuff? I’ve only been with him, so I don’t know. Can you give me another perspective? – A Little Worried In Wisconsin Dear Worried: These days some men wax, shave, moisturize and exfoliate their bodies. Your husband may wear tights at the gym because he looks around and sees younger men with sleeker physiques and he’s self-conscious about his own.

If he’s not getting strange looks from others working out there, his attire may not be that unusual.

It’s important that couples, particularly those who have been married as long as you two have, be able to talk to each other. Because some of this is a recent change in your husband’s behavior, you deserve an explanation.

Dear Abby: I am a divorced woman in my mid40s. I started dating again about two years ago, and shortly after, I met “Jed.” He is someone I’d love to spend the rest of my life with. We have been seeing each other for more than a year, and I’d like some sort of commitment. I have tried talking to him about it. I’m financially stable but would have a better lifestyle if I could share the bills with someone. Marriage is not important, and I have explained that to him, but I want a full-time commitment. At the bridge table, it’s often not so much knowing when to play, as when to pause for thought. That applies in particular at trick one. The more thinking at trick one, the better you will play, whether you are the declarer or a defender.

In today’s deal, how should South play in five hearts after West leads the diamond king?

The bidding was short but exciting. East’s four-spade opening bid would have usually been based on an eight-card suit, but was understandable since he was nonvulnerable. However, South had an easy five-heart overcall. West wondered about six diamonds, but knew it would be a wild action. (Six diamonds doubled can be defeated by seven tricks, minus 1,700.)

Now to this difficult declarer-play problem. Given the opening lead, South has only 10 top tricks: seven hearts, one diamond and two clubs. Yes, the club jack might drop singleton or doubleton, but that is unlikely. And assuming it does not appear, how can declarer possibly get home?

There is one chance: South must find West with the club jack. And, even harder to realize, declarer must not win the first trick.

Let’s assume West continues with the diamond queen. South ruffs in his hand, draws trumps, cashes the club ace, and overtakes the club queen with dummy’s king.
