“After the event, all the Italians were coming up to me and saying ‘You will never win again,’” said O’Brien, who competed under the name “Mikey Two-Knives.”

One Italian-American who was drawn to this year’s competition is Vic Scumaci of Lemont. He and his three brothers will form the team “Quatro Scumaci.”

Although he is there to compete, Scumaci said he is most looking forward to tasting everyone’s food and learning about their family recipes.

Simone Porter said she is amazed at how the festival is drawing people from across the community, not just St. Al’s/St. Pat’s families.

“It’s centered around celebrating the passion and love of family and tradition and feasting at the same family table,” she said.

LEMONT – Nathan Hiatt, the man accused of attacking a Lemont boy with a shovel in July, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Aug. 15, according to records from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s of- Nathan Hiatt fice.

Hiatt is charged with aggravated battery and use of deadly weapon. His next court date is Sept. 26 at the Bridgeview Court House.

According to a news release from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Hiatt allegedly beat a 10-year-old boy with a shovel while he slept during the early morning hours of July 6 in unincorporated Cook County near Lemont.

The boy and his father, who attempted to shield the boy from the blows, were taken to the hospital and later released, according to the report.

Sheriff’s police were given a description of the offender, which matched that of Hiatt, and located him in the yard, the release said.

LEMONT – Festa EATaliana is returning to downtown Lemont for a second year and changing its name from Festa Italiana.

“We changed the name because it’s really a melting pot of multiple cultures that is celebrating Italian cuisine,” said Lisa Simone Porter, marketing chair for St. Al’s/St. Pat’s School in Lemont and organizer of the event.

The fest – which will the Saturday outside Bottles in Talcott Square – features food, drinks and live music. Proceeds will benefit St. Al’s/St. Pat’s School.

The highlight of the festival is the Godmother Throw Down, an Italian cooking contest.

Simone Porter said she expects more than 25 chefs to compete in six categories: “Auntie Antipasti Grapas Tapas” (Italian small plates); “Nonna’s Mangia Main Dish;” “Godmother Meatball Throw Down;” “Grazie Sunday Gravy and Oh Mio Mia Macaroni” (pasta and sauce); “Goombah’s Gluten Free” and “Holy Cannoli Cousins Deserts.”

Cooks also will be judged on the creativity of their aprons.

Judges will include Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy, Lemont Park District Executive Director Louise Egofske, St. Al’s/St. Pat’s Principal Renee Payne, Father Brian Ardagh of St. Alphonsus Church, Father Kurt Boras of St. Patrick Church and a lineup of professional chefs.

LEMONT – The recently named director of the Lemont KinderCare childcare center was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol while her children were in the car in 2011.

Rhabi Baker, who previous media reports say is from Olympia Fields, has been employed by KinderCare for six years and recently transferred from the Orland Park center, where she had been the director since 2011.

According to police reports, Baker was arrested on Feb. 27, 2011, in Portage, Ind. She initially was charged with a Class D felony for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with an additional charge of having a blood alcohol content greater than the .08 legal limit and a misdemeanor for having two children in the car. Police said the charge constituted a felony because Baker previously had been charged for driving while intoxicated.

According to the Porter County Clerk of the Circuit Court, Baker reached a plea agreement regarding her

charges.

Baker was taking her 5-year-old and 1-year-old children home when she was pulled over for travelling east on the westbound lanes of Interstate 94, according to previous media reports. She failed a series of field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit.

Colleen Moran, the senior communications coordinator for KinderCare, said via email that the company follows the guidelines from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that “an arrest record alone should not be used in employment decisions.”

“We are aware that Ms. Baker was arrested, but not convicted, for DUI in 2011,” she said. “Since she was not convicted of a crime and has no other restriction on her ability to work with and teach children, we are confident that her center leadership abilities will continue to shine through as she works to help educate the children at the Lemont center.”

When contacted, Baker said the incident “was not true” and refused to further elaborate.

LEMONT – The Lemont Village Board is expected to vote on the special use applications of two properties during its next meeting Monday.

The properties were discussed during the Committee of the Whole meeting Monday.

St. Patrick Church is requesting permission to use a residential zoned property at 217 Cass Ave. to make a parking lot.

The property is not directly adjacent to the church or its existing property, so the village had to make an amendment to its Unified Development Ordinance to allow the property to be used as a parking lot.

The church already has received approval to demolish a home and garage on site. The church’s request was initially denied by Lemont’s Historic Preservation Commission in February, but the decision was overturned by the Village Board in April.

A spokesperson with the

church said they had no comment.

Westway Coach Inc. is seeking to lease a vacant lot at 11295 Lemont Road to use as a school bus terminal and minor repair facility. The buses would service school districts in Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn and Hinsdale.

The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval but is requesting the village engineer study the traffic impact of the buses using Lemont Road.

The 90 to 100 buses would be leaving north on Lemont Road between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., meaning they would not go through downtown Lemont.

Village Planning and Economic Development Director Charity Jones said the concern is whether the buses would cause a backup in the left turn lane when returning to the terminal.

Any changes to the road to improve traffic flow would need to go through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A legislative victory and upcoming events A legislative victory for students with disabilities was accomplished, thanks in part to one of our participants, Tyler Woodworth of Lockport.

The governor signed the law, sponsored by state Sen. Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago) and state Rep. Emily McAsey (D-Romeoville), allowing school districts to excuse students from their required physical education classes if those students are involved in organized adaptive athletics programs. State law already allowed the exemption for students participating in interscholastic athletic programs or certain other activities.

“People with disabilities who participate in adaptive sports should be given the same consideration as all other athletes,” said Gov. Pat Quinn. “Now, young athletes like Tyler will be able to have more academic flexibility and focus more of their learning time on classes they need to prepare them for college and a career.”

Tyler, who participates in the Chicago Hornets sled hockey team, recognized the inequality when he wished to take a computer science class and couldn’t.

Inspired by the many global cultures that make up the school’s student body, Oakwood parent Arsa Ibianskas painted a welcoming mural at the school’s front entrance depicting the world encircled by children.

Oakwood Principal Cathy Slee estimates Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A offers English Language Learner services for students speaking 24 different languages.

The mural highlights that diversity by displaying the word “hello” in several languages: English, Spanish, Polish, Lithuanian, Ukrainian and Italian.

Slee said an ELL teacher came up with the idea for the mural a couple of years ago and the school has wanted to see it come to fruition ever since.

Arsa Ibianskas painted a mural welcoming children in six languages at Oakwood School in Lemont.

“It was a dream and finding the right person,” she said.

Slee met Ibianskas during an event at a Lithuanian Saturday school in Lemont. They started planning the mural in late spring and the painting took place from Aug. 12 to 15.

As people walk in the front entrance, the mural is on the right. On the left, there is a poem describing how boring the world would be without

different languages and cultures.

Ibianskas said she thinks students will look for similarities between themselves and the children in the mural. She also knows from personal experience how seeing her culture represented makes her feel special.

“It’s such a small thing,” she said. “But I think it will have a big impact.”

VIRGINIA M. NOWAK Virginia M. Nowak, age 72, Goshen, Indiana, formerly of Lemont, died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at 4:10 p.m. at Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born September 8, 1940, in Joliet, to Frederick & Bernice (Bannon) Wertzler. She married Raymond E. Nowak on June 20, 1959.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond, and daughters, Debra (John) Fisher, Goshen, Susan (John) Poling, Aurora, Illinois, Rachelle (Greg) Shuff, Elkhart, Indiana, Judith (Mark) Berg, Grafton, Wisconsin, and 8 grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents.

Virginia was a graduate of Mt. Assisi Academy, Lemont, homemaker, mother and loving grandmother. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen, a parent volunteer at Wakarusa Elementary School, loved making quilts, sewing, cooking but most of all spending time with her family. A strong faith in God saw her through her journey in life.

Visitation will be 2:00-4:00pm & 6:00-8:00pm, Thursday, August 22, 2013, with a rosary service at 7:30pm, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. Jack Adamo, age 86, of Lemont, passed away on August 10, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born December 14, 1926, in Chicago.

Devoted husband of Wilma nee Youngs for 62 years, he is survived by his four children, Laura (Zachary) Bravos, James (Marie), Mary (Joseph) Friedman, and John (Lauren); grandchildren Nathan and Christian Hins, Maia Hampton, Patrick, Eileen, Ryan, Therese, Kieran and Nicholas Adamo, Roxanne and Madeline Robertson, and four great-grandchildren. Dear brother of the late Peter, Katherine Netto, Edward, and Nicholas Adamo; fond uncle and friend of many.

Jack, a Navy veteran of WWII, worked at Argonne National Laboratory for 32 years. His passion for classical guitar inspired his children's love for the instrument.

Jack also had a lifelong love of flying, and late in his life enjoyed helping a friend build an airplane.

A private memorial service will be held in October.

What to watch: Competing at the loaded Class AA Naperville North regional last year, the Indians performed quite nicely, placing fifth with a stroke total of 368.

Lemont did come away with a pair of sectional qualifiers, and one of them, Bridget Lynn, went

on to finish in a tie for 50th place at the state meet.

After a busy summer spent on the golf course, Lynn returns this fall to lead the Indians as she looks to improve on her nine-hole average score of 41.

Junior Laura Ringo should also be a major factor for the squad.

“We lost four seniors who contributed last year,” said coach Bill Mondrella, “so we are looking for some other girls to step up and fill those spots. We have a solid senior leader in Bridget Lynn who went downstate last year.”

Coach basks in glow of second championship

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Joel Quenneville had an extensive hockey playing career that spanned 14 NHL seasons, plus time in other professional leagues.

But in Chicago, he is known more for what he does behind the bench than on the ice.

When the Hinsdale resident coached the Blackhawks to the 2010 Stanley Cup, he helped end a 49-year championship drought, which was the longest in hockey at the time. In June, Quenneville guided the Blackhawks to another title, and they will look to repeat again next season when training camp opens Sept. 12.

SUBURBAN LIFE: Has there been any down time for you this summer?

JOEL QUENNEVILLE: It’s been a very short summer. We went back to Connecticut for a couple weeks, and it felt nice to get away.

SL: What was it like to bring the Cup to the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade?

JQ: That wasn’t my day with the Cup, but I was fortunate that the Cup was in town that day and I was able to bring it to the parade. It was a great parade. There was a nice turnout and there was a lot of enthusiasm from everyone.

JQ: It was a condensed year and we had no idea how things were going to start. I think the guys had a great mindset all year. We had a couple of goals that we set forth. We wanted to be tough to play against, we wanted to keep the puck out of our zone and we wanted to see our special teams improve. The guys’ approach was great. We got off to an amazing start, and you have to commend the guys’ approach the whole season.

SL: What moment most defines last season for you?

JQ: I think that this year was one of those years that was just so unbelievable. We played at a high rate but we didn’t have to face much adversity. Being down 3-1 to Detroit [in the playoffs], and I thought we were

We worked our way through it and got back to our winning ways.

SL: Are you going to miss playing Detroit six times a year now that they are in the other conference?

JQ: That rivalry has been tremendous. We’ve had some great games with them, two of them being Game 7 [of the play-

offs] and the regular-season game in Detroit [2-1 shootout win]. There’s passion in the rivalry between the cities and the fan bases. It’s electrifying.

Hopefully we get to play them in not too long in the playoffs [in the Stanley Cup Finals].

SL: How is the short offseason going to impact your chance to repeat as champions?

JQ: Our league is so competitive. Anybody can beat anybody else at any time. Look at Boston. They were down three goals in Game 7 [against To-

ronto] and came back to win.

Things are so close. Now the division rivalry is part of the playoffs. We’re going to continue to be the target, but I like the group we have here. Guys want to be here, and they want to win. That’s their competitive juices. They always have something to prove.

SL: How did the 2010 title and 2013 title compare?

JQ: They were different, but they were both nice. They were two different teams. The core was in place, but at the same time we had so many guys on the team who were new to winning the Cup, so it was to have them experience that. The depth of the team might have been higher in 2010, but this group had more contributions across the board and more balance.

SL: How will the Olympic break factor into this season?

JQ: We’ll probably look at it a lot like last season when rest was so important and practice time was down a little bit. We had to rest guys and manage minutes to make sure they were ready to play down the stretch. For guys that compete in the Olympics, I think that’s going to be the reality again.

We’ll see how it plays out, but after the Olympics we might have to manage minutes even more for the guys that play.

Super summer supper derful for breakfast or brunch but dressed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream it makes a great dessert. This recipe doesn’t require a stand mixer, so you can do everything by hand.

Satisfying salad kicked up with meat ‘n’ potatoes

While there are many components, this Super Summer Supper Salad could not be easier.

This is a great base recipe to add to or subtract from (if you subtract don’t tell me, I’ll be crushed). What’s also nice about this is every part of the recipe can be done up to two days ahead of time and then it becomes merely a job of assembling. What could be better than that on a hot summer day?

This salad serves six comfortably and up to 12 if you’d prefer to serve it as a side dish. Paired with a loaf of homemade French bread and finished with a rich seasonal blueberry crumb cake, it’s a meal that will leave your family and friends not only satisfied, but impressed!

Super Summer Salad

n 4 cups mesclun spring mix n 1 cup fresh spinach leaves n 3 boneless/skinless chicken

breasts, marinated (see marinade recipe below) n 1/2 cup snow peas, julienned n 1 red pepper, diced n 1 green pepper, diced n 10 baby Yukon gold potatoes n 4 hardboiled eggs n 2 pounds cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp n 1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese n 2 cups of prepared cheesestuffed tortellini, cooked and chilled thoroughly

Homemade French Bread. n 1/2 cup slivered peeled carrots n 1/2 pound fresh green beans Broil or grill marinated chicken.

Let cool at room temperature, then wrap and chill.

Boil the baby potatoes for approximately 20 minutes until the skins just begin to crack. Allow these to cool at room temperature, wrap and chill.

Place 4 cold eggs into a large pan of cold water. Bring this to a boil, cover and take off the heat. After 10 minutes, drain the eggs and place them in cold water for approximately 5 minutes. Crack and peel the eggs under cold running water. Chill these as well.

Boil the tortellini according to the directions on the package. Drain, cool and chill.

Blanch green beans in boiling water for 15 seconds, drain and place in a bowl of ice water. Drain, dry and chill.

Prior to assembling the salad, slice the cooled cooked chicken into thin strips. Cut the baby potatoes into halves and quarter the hardboiled eggs. Toss your greens and spinach together in a large bowl along with your peppers, carrots, and sugar snap peas. Add chilled baby potatoes, chicken and shrimp. Place quartered hard boiled eggs around the edges of the salad. Next, mound chilled tortellini in the center of the salad and

top with crumbled bleu cheese.

Christopher’s Foolproof Chicken Marinade: Combine the zest and juice of two large lemons, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons freshly cracked black pepper and 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil. Whisk until the mixture has emulsified. Pour this over the chicken and let marinade at least an hour, overnight is best.

Berry Crumb Cake With summer in full bloom it’s time to enjoy the fruits of the season. A favorite around my house is blueberries. This blueberry crumb cake is absolutely delectable with its moist, rich cake, sweet brown sugar topping and fresh seasonal fruit. It also does “double duty,” which is one of my favorite types of recipes. It’s won-

For the crumb cake: n 1 1/2 cups flour n 1/2 cup sugar n 1 1/2 t baking powder n 1/2 t kosher salt n 1 large egg n 1/2 cup plus 2 T milk n 2 T vegetable oil n 2 t vanilla extract For the topping: n 2 1/2 cups flour n 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar n 1 1/2 t cinnamon n 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly Make the crumb cake: In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking power and kosher salt. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla. Combine with the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon until well incorporated. Fold in a half pint of fresh blueberries and spread batter into a greased quarter-sized baking sheet. Preheat your oven to 325 F. Make the topping: Combine flour, butter, light brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix this with a wooden spoon until incorporated and with clean hands, form into crumbles.

Top the prepared batter with the topping, making sure to cover the entire cake. Bake for 20 minutes and cool on wire rack for at least 15 minutes. Cut into large pieces and enjoy!

Yes, says Liz Weiss, registered dietitian and founder of MealMakeoverMoms.com. Weiss, also coauthor of the family cookbook “No Whine with Dinner,” offers tips for putting a nutritious spin on kids’ lunchtime favorites while keeping them “trade-proof”: Beyond white or wheat: With pitas, naan, flatbreads, tortillas and more, any sandwich can have a global flair. Choose whole-grain options made with ingredients like 100-percent whole wheat and rolled oats.

Whole grains provide more fiber as well as nutrients like B vitamins and magnesium, important for strong bones.

The deli difference: Not all lunchmeat is created equal. Look for natural and organic brands made with a short, “clean” list of ingredients and no antibiotics or artificial colors, flavors or additives.

Nutty for butters: Replace peanut butter with other butters such as almond, sunflower or cashew. For a fun twist, spread your child’s favorite nut butter and jelly on lavash bread, roll up and then slice into “sushi” rolls.

Fruit inside, not on the side: Who says peanut butter sandwiches have to have jelly? Why not add thinly sliced bananas, strawberries or even kiwi fruit? Making a PB&J into a PB&F cuts the added sugar and boosts the flavor and nutrients. Ham & cheese sammies also pair nicely with fruit, especially sliced, crisp apples.

Take the chip off the shoulder: Let kids feel like mom caved on the chips by making a savory dip with yogurt or hummus and adding whole wheat pita chips and some veggies on the side. It’s like party food for lunch.
