School picture success means prep but not poses

or many parents, there’s something special about school picture day. They remember getting out of class, combing their hair, lining up with friends for their turn before the camera.

Then there was the thrill of the portrait envelope arriving, of wallet photos handed out like tiny trading cards, or delivering prints to grandma to be placed on her mantle.

While that’s still the case at many schools, today’s kids, surrounded by photo technology, may not be fazed by another click of the camera, says Lisa Van Etta, who recently retired after 17 years as a yearbook adviser at Cypress Falls High School in Houston.

“I just think they are so wrapped up in Facebook and texting and all of that that they just don’t really have time to worry about their school picture,” she says. “In rural areas, school pictures are still big. When you get in the city, not so much.”

Still, school pictures provide a rare professional sitting and, if done well, provide a seamless look at a child’s growth and personality over the years.

School picture day can be a success with some easy tips from photographers. Most important, they say, is helping your child feel comfortable with having their portrait taken. That means being relaxed, and wearing appropriate clothes in solid colors or simple patterns. every year ... They don’t realize how much of their memory is in something digital,” says Steve Lata, a photographer and territory manager with Missouri-based Inter-State Studio Inc., which takes millions of children’s school photos each year.

“The school portrait is one of the only things getting printed and hung on the wall anymore.”

A few simple steps by parents can make picture day a success, the pros say.

Above all, help children be comfortable having their portrait taken. They should feel good about

their appearance, but not pose.

“The most important thing about a school portrait is having that genuine countenance of the child. We don’t want them to be artificial, we want them to be as relaxed as possible,” says Kelvin Miller, corporate vice president of Minnesota-based LifeTouch School Photography.

Choose clothing in solid colors or simple patterns, and avoid shirts with slogans. Keep the accessories simple and small. Long sleeves will provide less visual distraction than short or sleeveless tops.

Clothing for portraits doesn’t need to be formal. Even a favorite, oft-worn shirt can be perfect on picture day, Miller says. If possible, help your child choose an outfit that pleases both of you.

“Make it kind of a fun activity ... and be willing to compromise,” he suggests.

As for grooming, the experts recommend haircuts two weeks before picture day. You’ll have a nice-looking trim without that “just cut” look.

Wear sunscreen and limit sun exposure before pictures to avoid bright red cheeks or peeling nos-

es. Trim fingernails, since hands might appear in some portraits.

So what’s the biggest mistake parents can make on picture day?

Forgetting the date.

Mark it on your calendar, so your child will be wearing appropriate clothes to reminisce over some day.

And don’t overhype the occasion either, says Lata.

“I’ve even seen a lot of parents telling their child to practice their smile,” says Lata. “As a photographer, that’s one of the last smiles you want.”

Encourage your kid to listen to the photographer’s directions.

Many school-photo photographers will use banter or maybe a highfive to put the child at ease in front of the lens and bright lights.

With digital equipment, they’re able to check the photos right away for closed eyes and awkward expressions. That cuts down on the need for retakes.

“We train our photographers to take the photo of the child, to look at the photo and to say in their mind: ‘If I were the parent, would I approve?’” Miller says.

FAMILY TIME | Helping kids hone their homework habits

Tip of the week Helping children with their homework requires more than an understanding of the subject matter, whether it’s algebra or world literature. To help children succeed throughout the school year, it’s important for parents to nurture positive study habits and organizational skills, and provide kids with a home environment that fosters concentration.

“Whether your kids are just learning to read, write and spell, or they are studying for the SATs, we parents have an opportunity to help instill work and study habits that will stick with our children for life,” says education and parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba, who is the bestselling author of 22 parenting books.

Borba offers parents some easy tips

to help children of all ages develop skills that will help them reach their academic goals: • Give them space: Create a dedicated space for homework and study.

This underscores the importance of homework to kids. If you don’t have room for a homework desk, consider keeping all homework and study tools in a bin or box that children can take out and use every day. Keep all essentials in one place to help avoid time wasted looking for the dictionary, ruler, calculator or other tool.

• Create a routine: Choose a time that works best for your child to do homework, then stick to that time every day. A set and predictable schedule helps minimize homework battles.

“Work before play” can motivate kids to get their homework done, but if your child plays sports or has other afterschool commitments, doing homework after dinner may be the best option.

• Avoid distractions: Establish a technology-free zone for homework and studying. Turn off TVs, ban text messaging and ensure kids are using their PC for research, rather than Facebook. This measure may seem obvious to you, but remember – kids

are so tied to tech these days that they may be surprised to find out they can more efficiently use their time without the distractions of technology.

• Map out assignments: Help children plot homework on a schedule so they have simple reminders of daily, weekly or long-term assignments.

Include other engagements like sports or music lessons to help kids have a clearer picture of their own schedules.

This can help build basic time management skills, like working on a long-term project every day over time, or avoiding a late-night cramming session for a big test.

• Lessons in planning and prioritizing: Teach kids to make lists of what they need to do each night in order of priority. As your child accomplishes each item, have him cross it off the list.

For children who had difficulty staying on task, breaking large projects into smaller, more manageable tasks can help. Encourage kids to do the hardest homework first to help relieve the pressure of a long to-do list.

• Emphasize the effort: Stressing perseverance and effort in a task helps children work longer and harder, because they recognize their success is

based on how hard they work. Instead of asking “What score did you get?” ask “How hard are you working?”

• Effective study habits: Spreading out study sessions and practice testing were the two most-effective learning tactics, according to a recent report by the Association for Psychological Science. Both techniques involve strong time management skills. Help children think of study sessions or pieces of a larger project as daily to-dos, and just as important as the homework assignment that may be due tomorrow.

The daughter of Dave and Mary Lamphere of DeKalb, the bride is a 2005 graduate of DeKalb High School and a 2009 graduate of Northern Illinois University. She is employed as a social studies teacher at Jefferson High School in Rockford.

The son of Terry and Karen Frazer of Caledonia, the groom is a 2002 graduate of Belvidere High School and a 2006 graduate of Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He is employed as a social studies teacher at Auburn High School in Rockford.

Bridesmaids were Erica Adkins of DeKalb, Ami Goswami of Chicago, Christina Lamphere of DeKalb and Jill Mary Campbell of Montgomery.

Jake Frazer of Caledonia served as Best Man. Groomsmen were Brent Simross of Cherry Valley, Zachary Lamphere of DeKalb and Brent West of Astoria, Ore. The wedding reception was held at Two Brothers Roundhouse in Aurora. The couple took a wedding trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico.

The couple resides in Rockford.

Bill and Mary Ellen Finnan of Sycamore celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 31, 2013.

Mary Ellen Kessen and Bill Finnan were married July 31, 1948, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb.

Bill retired from General Electric after 39 years. Mary worked at the Fyfe ’n Drum restaurant and retired from Northern Illinois University.

They have one daughter, Pam of Phoenix, Ariz., and three sons, Jim and Krist of Rockford, Roger of DeKalb and J.J. and Sherry of Maple Park. They have eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The couple will celebrate their anniversary with their family at a later date.

Carroll and Marilyn Donoho of Paw Paw will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 31 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 19 Perry Road, Lee. The couple was married Aug. 31, 1963, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville.

Marilyn is a professional seamstress and Carroll is retired from Country Financial.

The couple has two children, Kevin and Brenda Donoho of Mahomet, and Rich and Anita Ott of Jacksonville, Ill. They also have five grandchildren, Kathleen, Dale, Hannah, Catherine and Geoffrey.

Joan Benner of Lee will celebrate her 80th birthday at a family gathering.

Joan was born Aug. 20, 1933. She is a retired registered nurse and a farm wife. She also volunteered at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

She has been married to Ed Benner for 58 years.

She has three children, Kathy (Rich) Sheahan of Sycamore, Ken (Kristin) Benner of Hollywood, Fla., and Kristen (Bryan) Edecker of Lee. She also has three grandchildren, Brian, Tim and Amy Sheahan.

River Heights staff helpful, professional To the Editor: This letter is long overdue. My family has been celebrating the memory of my father with a golf invitational for the past 16 years. We are scheduled to do so again this August at River Heights Golf Course in DeKalb.

I would like to recognize the staff, particularly Roger Huber and Jane Holdridge. Each and every year, they have been most helpful and professional to ensure that we have a great experience.

Most of my family members who attend are from other communities. They have been very impressed with the friendly manner of the staff and excellent condition of both the golf course and clubhouse. This creates a positive impression of our community.

I also had the opportunity to work with Roger and Jane after my retirement from the DeKalb schools for parts of two seasons. I learned firsthand what hard-working and professional individuals they were.

Napa winery mixes tradition, sustainablity Tradition casts long shadows at Chateau Montelena.

“There’s days I roll up to the winery and pinch myself,” said winemaker Cameron Parry, who expects to begin harvest at his Napa Valley winery next week because of a slightly drier than usual spring which prompted an early bud break.

“There’s so much tradition here. The winery has only had four winemakers in 42 years, so I know I’ve got big shoes to fill. But it’s a pleasure to be able to work with really amazing fruit. It’s a privilege and an honor to work here,” he said.

Winemaker spotlight With near reverent tones, Cameron Parry detailed the dependability of Chateau Montelena vineyards. Three different soils – alluvial, sedimentary and volcanic – build complexity into the wines.

“A hallmark of this property is the vineyard’s amazing ability to ripen,” Parry said. “Because of where we are situated, we’ve got the right solar exposure, slope and soil. We ripen earlier even in what are traditionally late-ripening seasons. Even in a tricky year, we see full maturity.”

When Chateau Montelena modernized its cellar in 2011, a stout task considering the building is 126 years old, it didn’t have to change its best practice in the vineyard. Chateau Montelena was ahead of the vineyard

sustainability curve.

“It’s centrally important to maintain the health of the vineyards,” Parry said. “It’s not just us going out and hugging trees. It’s important for us to operate with social equity to maintain our economic viability.

“We want to give back to the land. That’s an important part of our philosophy.

We were green before being green was popular. We pay attention to the health of the soil, have custom compost for each block of the vineyard and special cover crop, too.

We recycle all that we can and are almost 100 percent solar powered.”

Wine 101 “Bottle Shock” is a 2009 film that stars Alan Rickman as Steve Spurrier, a British wine merchant in France, and Bill Pullman as Chateau Montelena winemaker Jim Barrett. The trials and tribulations of each are detailed – Spurrier as a struggling merchant and Barrett as the lead protagonist of Napa Valley winemakers struggling to find their niche in the industry and acceptance by the masses.

Dance school offers aerial classes

The donation came from proceeds from the restaurant’s annual golf outing, raffle and pig roast, held June 29 at Sycamore Community Park. The donation will be used to benefit the music therapy program at DeKalb County Hospice.

Sycamore library collection Just in time for school, Trinity Nordbrock, a sixth grader at Sycamore Middle School, brought her collection of pencils for the display case at the Sycamore Public Library. Her collection will be in the Youth Department for the month of August.

The Performing Arts Academy is now offering Introduction to Aerial Silk classes at its Sycamore location. Aerial dance, in which an apparatus is rigged to the ceiling, allowing performers to move both horizontally and vertically, was first recognized in the 1970s.

Aerial silk classes are becoming a popular form of exercise. Classes incorporate a warm up, strength conditioning and stretching.

Students will learn at their own pace, as there are a limited number allowed per class.

Climbing, posing and dropping will be part of the curriculum. Aerial classes are for ages 9 and older.

Jodi Riley is a certified Stott Pilates instructor and an accomplished dance teacher.

She has had several years of training in both dance and Pilates. Her new adventure this year has been aerial dance. She has trained at Aerial Dance Chicago as well as Destin Pilates Center in Destin, Fla. She is trained in level 1 aerial silks and will continue her training to complete level 2.

Thrift sale aids Tanzanian development Tanzania Development Support will sponsor a fundraising garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 at 201 Thornbrook Road in DeKalb.

This event promises to have a tremendous selection of household items suitable for furnishing an apartment or supplementing an established household. In addition to home furnishings, there will be an assortment of clothing, toys, sporting goods, books, small appliances, electronics and vintage items.

Donations of salable items are welcome, particularly furniture. Items can be dropped off before the sale dates by calling 815-9010393 to schedule a time. Arrangements can also be made for donations to be picked up.

Tanzania Development Support is a nonprofit 501c3 organization supported by many volunteers from the DeKalb area. Members

are actively working to help children and their families in rural Tanzania lift themselves out of poverty through education, training and community development. TDS’s current project is the construction of a library and resource center to serve over 2000 girls and boys and their families in the community of Nyegina in Tanzania. It will be built in three phases, each phase costing an estimated $150,000.

Financial donations are also accepted.

Language barrier leaves girlfriend in the cold Dear Abby: I recently started dating one of my graduate school classmates. We come from different cultures, but we get along great and I really like him.

My problem is he’s very close to his family, who seem to like me very much, but I always feel left out around them. An example: The nine of us went out to dinner and the whole time they were speaking to each other in their native tongue while I just sat there. Then, after dinner, his parents asked why I was so quiet.

The family speaks English fluently and are otherwise nice to me. When I confronted my boyfriend about it, he said it would be disrespectful for him to speak to his elders in English.

I want a future with this man, but I know it won’t work out if I can’t be included in his family. Am I wrong to think they should involve me in the conversation? – Outsider in New York Dear Outsider: In light of the fact that everyone knows you don’t speak the language, their behavior does seem inconsiderate – particularly if it’s happening often. Perhaps you should speak to them about it and ask to be included in the conversation. An alternative would be to take a

Dear Abby: I have been in a steady, committed relationship with my boyfriend, “Carey,” for four years. We have discussed our future and have agreed that we want to get married and start a family soon.

As a child, I always dreamed of a big, fancy wedding. Carey, on the other hand, says he doesn’t want one. He feels it would be a waste of money. After a lot of discussion, we decided to compromise and have a courthouse wedding followed by a small, simple reception.

My biggest issue is he insists we don’t need rings,

and he refuses to get me one.

Although I have explained that a ring would symbolize our love and life together, and it would mean a great deal to me personally, he won’t budge. Now I’m beginning to doubt whether I want to marry him.

What should I do? Am I being superficial? – Confused About Marriage Dear Confused: I don’t think that wanting a wedding ring is superficial. It’s normal.

Furthermore, if you have any doubts about marrying this young man, you should put the wedding on hold until the two of you have had premarital counseling. Arguments about how money should be spent have ruined marriages, and it appears the two of you are planets apart on this important issue.

Dear Abby: What is proper when opening gift cards with money enclosed? My family has made it a habit for the nieces to open their cards in front of everyone. I feel it should be done in private.

– Uncomfortable in Pennsylvania Dear Uncomfortable: Opening the card is fine. Reading the sentiments inside is also perfectly acceptable. But to reveal the amount of the check or money enclosed is a no-no.

Dear Abby: My children’s nanny, “Daisy,” has been with us for more than two years. She’s not the best, but I know I could do a lot worse.

The most important thing is my children adore her and she is used to our routine. By and large, I’m happy to have her. However, I have two pet peeves I don’t know how to address.

Daisy is always late. Not by much, mind you – but it is consistent. She’s at least five minutes late every single day.

Maybe it shouldn’t bother me so much, but it does. I never dock her pay for tardiness, and I always pay her on time.

To me, it’s a reflection of how important she views her job. I feel it is disrespectful.

The kicker is, Daisy is studying to be a nurse. I have told her unless she breaks this bad habit, she’ll be fired from a future nursing job.

The second thing is, on hot, humid days, Daisy has the worst body odor imaginable. When the weather is cool, she doesn’t smell, but once sticky weather arrives, the wall of stench is enough to make my nose hairs curl.

One day it made me physically ill and I had to excuse her for the day without explaining why.

How should I address these problems? Or am I making too

big a deal out of this? – Having Issues in Virginia Dear Having Issues: Daisy may not be the best employee, but a good employer makes clear what the ground rules are when someone is hired.

Because you’re a stickler for punctuality, remind Daisy about what her hours are and stress that you expect her to be on time or risk having her pay docked. (If she uses public transportation, there should be some flexibility, but because she’s late every day she should be told she needs to leave home a few minutes earlier.)

As to her personal hygiene issue, address it directly. Tell her you expect her to have showered, used deodorant and put on fresh clothes before coming to work – especially in the summer.

Helpful hint: When you hire someone, have a list of written rules prepared for the individual to read and sign so there will be no misunderstandings. Doing that is being an effective boss.

New sunscreen labels offer better information Dear Dr. K: Sunscreen labels have changed since I stocked up last year. What should I look for on the new labels?

Dear Reader: Sunscreen products do look different than they have in the past, as new rules for labels are now in effect. These new rules, mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have made sunscreen labels more informative and less misleading.

Sunlight exposes your skin to ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays age and wrinkle skin; UVB rays cause sunburn. Both contribute to skin cancer. So you want to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB.

ASK DR. K Anthony L. Komaroff Sunscreens vary in their protection against UVA and UVB. The best protection is “broad spectrum protection,” which filters out much of the UVA and UVB. Under the new FDA rules, if a label says “broad spectrum,” the product must pass tests proving that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Also under the new rules, the term “sunblock” is no longer allowed, because none of these products block all of the sun’s rays. “Waterproof” is also banned, because water

does rinse off some of the creams. It’s just a matter of degree. You want creams that are least likely to wash off when you go into the water.

Some creams fit the bill; under the new rules they are called “water-resistant.” This term must be accompanied by a set time for reapplication.

Another big change concerns SPF, or sun protection factor. SPF is a measurement of how much longer it takes for your skin to turn red from the sun after applying the sunscreen. Sunscreen with an SPF of less than 15 for both UVA and UVB must now carry a warning that it only reduces your risk of sunburn, and does not reduce your risk

of either skin cancer or early skin aging.

When you go out in the sun, you want to reduce your risk of sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer – not just one or two of them, but all of them. Therefore, to reduce your risk of skin cancer and early aging, I recommend you use a sunscreen with the following features: • Broad spectrum protection • SPF of 30 or higher • Water-resistant for up to 40 or 80 minutes Once you buy the right sunscreen, make sure to apply it properly: • Apply sunscreen before you go out.

• Apply enough and reapply frequently. Use 1 ounce of sunscreen (a shot glass full) to cover your body and face.

• Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

• Apply every two hours even if you don’t get in the water or sweat.

I was raised in Southern California in the years before we understood all the damage the sun could do to your skin.

Everyone “worked on their tan,” including me. Several skin cancers later, I wish we had then the kind of potent sunscreens we have today.
