How right Mary Kay Ash was when she uttered those words. It reminded me of the Special Olympics athletes I coached for two years through the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association. So often they live their lives without fear or without knowing their own limitations.

They approach every day as a new day and take such joy in the things they do. They are a true inspiration.

The FVSRA provides year-round recreational opportunities to residents with disabilities. The Batavia Park District is one of seven member agencies and makes up approximately 10 percent of the participants. Partnerships with those agencies are key to the FVSRA’s success, and Batavia is honored to play such a large part of that.

“I can’t say enough about the fantastic experiences our staff has had working with the Batavia Park District,” said Sandy Blondin, superintendent of recreation for the FVSRA. “It’s truly a family approach to making sure participants have a great experience. Batavia has set the bar high, and our partnership has been very positive.”

Every year, the FVSRA serves approximately 6,500 individuals with disabilities.

From special events and Special Olympics sports to summer day camps and trips, it truly provides something for everyone.

“The programs we offer give everyone the opportunity to be appreciated and accepted, regardless of their abilities,” Blondin said. “We provide a lifetime of leisure opportunities for participants – from the toddler learning to swim, to the teen in Special Olympics sports, to the senior who participates in bingo night. We want to make sure they’re having the best positive recreation and leisure experience we can.”

vide inclusion services to park district participants.

Inclusion is the process of taking a person who has a disability and including him or her into a typical recreation program with varying levels of assistance. This can include making changes to the program or providing accessible equipment to put everyone on an equal playing field. Nearly 2,500 inclusion hours are devoted to Batavia participants annually.

Blondin shared with me the story of a young girl from Batavia who participated in a ski trip offered through the FVSRA. The group traveled to Breckenridge, Colo., for the trip.

“She was nervous because she had never been skiing, but after some one-on-one instruction, she became

more confident,” Blondin said. “By the end of the trip she was able to go down the hill without assistance. That was an experience she never would’ve been able to have had if not been for our partnership with the Batavia Park District.”

My experience volunteering for the FVSRA was incredibly rewarding. I would venture to say the athletes taught me more in those two years than I was able to teach them, which is typical, according to Blondin.

“Volunteering promotes a greater understanding and overall acceptance of individuals with disabilities,” she said. “It has such a positive impact on the volunteer, while promoting greater compassion and respect for others.”

Blondin’s passion for her job and the participants she has instructed is obvious to anyone who meets her.

After being in charge of the FVSRA’s popular summer day camp program, she was promoted to superintendent of recreation. She holds a degree in therapeutic recreation from Illinois State University.

CHARLESTOWNE OPTIMISM Official says St. Charles mall is under contract to be sold

Promises of an indoor ice skating rink and a seafood and sushi buffet never materialized under the ownership of a California-based group of investors, but the future of Charlestowne Mall soon might be looking up.

Officials said the mall is set to get new owners.

Neil Johnson, managing director for the St. Charles office of commercial real estate firm Sperry Van Ness who oversees tenant recruitment at Charlestowne, said in an email that the mall is under contract to be sold.

“There is no specific closing date or redevelopment timetable yet,” he wrote. “However, I do know that the new owners intend to keep it as a mall and to make extensive upgrades.”

Johnson couldn’t share any more details Tuesday but said more information should be available in the next 45 days.

Mayor Ray Rogina, who addressed Charlestowne Mall throughout this year’s mayoral race, said news of the impending sale leads to optimism.

“It’s a huge economic driver for us on the east side,” Rogina said. “The residents have waited a long time to see something developed.”

He said the city is ready and willing to talk with the new owner.

“When they’re ready to go, we’re ready to go,” he said.

Opened in 1991 along Route 64 just east of Kirk Road, Charlestowne Mall at one time boasted more than 120 tenants.

It has been owned by Charlestowne Mall Investments – which was led by California investors who also had purchased a failing mall property in Cupertino, Calif. – since 2010.

Body Works and Claire’s left the mall. Now, Charlestowne has few tenants other than anchors Kohl’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Von Maur and Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18.

The community’s vision for the mall is laid out in the city’s 2013 comprehensive plan, which could be adopted as early as Monday. It includes details about what the mall could be like as a “Main Street” shopping center; an entertainment and events center; and a concept called Town Center East, which fragments the mall to create a more traditional town center pattern of streets, storefronts and open space.

“The Charlestowne Mall site represents the single greatest opportunity to redefine the character and function of the East Gateway,” the draft comprehensive plan states. “This framework plan highlights recommendations that could be implemented regardless of the timing or end vision for the repositioning of the mall structure itself.”

Whatever plans the new owner may have for Charlestowne, Rogina said the city’s goal is to make sure changes are done in the confines of the comprehensive plan.

right, but he wouldn’t want Charlestowne to be a run-ofthe-mill shopping center. He referenced resident and former mayoral candidate John Rabchuk’s comments at the Planning and Development Committee meeting Monday night about wanting a special development for First Street in downtown St. Charles.

“The same is true about the mall,” Rogina said. “We want something truly unique to St. Charles.”

Both he and incoming City Administrator Mark Koenen said the mall should benefit from recent roadway improvements.

“Don’t discount the value

of that Red Gate Bridge,” Rogina said, explaining residents in the northwest corridor now have ready-made access to the mall instead of having to go through downtown.

Koenen spoke about the construction on Route 64, which is set to end this fall.

“The city needs to facilitate an environment where retail and commercial development can be successful,” Koenen said.

“With the conclusion of the Route 64 project, that improved infrastructure provides an environment for a business to be successful.”

Mall manager Kathy Kekatos declined to comment.

Kane board OKs funds for program Riverboat money would help pay for social media connection program

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has secured permission to pay for half of his social media community outreach program using riverboat casino funds.

But in coming years, funding for the program might need to come from other sources, and perhaps from tax money, should some members of the Kane County Board have their way.

The County Board voted, 168, Tuesday to approve spending $81,000 of the county’s allocation of riverboat money to support Lauzen’s Kane County Connected program.

The spending item was approved along with about $4.4 million in funding for various county projects out of Kane’s riverboat fund for 2014, which is funded by Elgin’s Grand Victoria Casino.

In 2014, the county expects to receive about $3.9 million from the riverboat casino. But the County Board expects to

dip into a $10 million fund balance that has built up for more than a decade to pay the additional $500,000 for county government projects and $1 million to the external charities.

Some on the board questioned the wisdom of deliberately choosing to spend almost 40 percent more out of the riverboat fund than is expected to be received in annual revenue.

County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said he believed the County Board first should discuss establishing policies to govern withdrawals from the riverboat fund balance before simply choosing to spend more of the riverboat money than will be received next year.

Others on the board agreed, but also urged the board to set an example for the rest of the county government by removing funding for Lauzen’s social media program.

“We need to fund this, and this is a way of doing it. Why go to taxpayers now, and say we’re asking for more? But before we do this again next year, we need to have a policy discussion about how we’re going to use this money going forward.”

said the program is focused on social media platforms designed to foster connections between various “constituencies” in the county and make the county more inviting for residents and businesses.

The program is expected to cost $161,000 in 2014, and Lauzen asked for half of that to come from riverboat funds.

Some members of the

County Board said funding for the program should not come from riverboat funds, but from the regular county budget. Lauzen reacted angrily to the attempt to remove the riverboat funding, challenging board members to declare where the money should come from.

“Would you rather have property taxpayers pay for this? Or riverboat funds?” he said.

Ultimately, the board sided with Lauzen.

But board members appeared to agree that a discussion was needed in coming months over how the county should fund such projects, and how it should spend riverboat funds.

“We need to fund this, and this is a way of doing it,” said board member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora. “Why go to taxpayers now, and say we’re asking for more?

“But before we do this again next year, we need to have a policy discussion about how we’re going to use this money going forward.”

Anderson said part of his platform harkens back to a 1960s slogan: If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

“There is no disagreement that there is a problem in Washington. I don’t believe that our current representa-

tive of the 14th District has done much to alleviate the problem,” said Anderson, referring to Hultgren, R-Winfield.

According to official results in the election Nov. 6, the vote was 177,603 to 124,351.

Anderson lost to Hultgren by 53,252 votes. Still, Ander-

son said he has some level of name recognition from his first run for office that he hopes will work in his favor in the 2014 midterm elections.

“I know that there’s a value in incumbency, but I think every election is new,” Anderson said. “I am not looking at this race as a recapitulation of the last one.”

Sean McCarthy, Hult gren’s chief of staff, said the congressman has said at constituent groups that he will seek a third term, but Hultgren has not yet sent out a formal statement.

The district is comprised of seven suburban counties including McHenry, Lake, Kendall, Kane, DuPage, DeKalb and Will.

Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said she is not running for lieutenant governor, despite a news release issued by one of her primary opponents claiming she is running for that position.

“Darlene is running for the 11th congressional seat and that is it,” said Anthony Barry, Senger’s deputy campaign manager, on Tuesday.

“The simple fact is that Mr. Bayne’s comments are 100

percent false, reckless and irresponsible.”

Senger faces possible challengers in the March 18 primary election from conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora and Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema.

Bayne sent out a news release Tuesday contending that Senger plans to run for lieutenant governor.

Despite Barry’s comments, Bayne said he stood by his statement.

“If you want to be a member of Congress, run for Congress,” Bayne said. “If you want to be lieutenant governor, run for lieutenant gov-

ernor.”

The 11th District includes North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet.

Maple Park OKs video gambling for local bars

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Taverns and other establishments in the village have been cleared to ask the state for permission to install video gambling machines within their businesses.

The Maple Park Village Board unanimously voted last week to approve an ordinance permitting certain businesses within the village to operate

the machines.

“Our Maple Park businesses would have been at a competitive disadvantage if we had not approved this,” Maple Park Village Trustee Terry Borg said.

The vote in favor of the ordinance reversed the village’s position on the matter. When the state of Illinois first granted establishments the chance to install such licensed video gambling machines several years ago, Maple Park was

among several local communities that took advantage of a provision in the state law allowing local governments to ban the machines within counties, cities and villages.

But in recent days, many communities – including Elburn and Sugar Grove – reversed those bans, often at the urging of local bar owners.

In Maple Park, the village was asked by representatives of Maple Park American Legion Post 312 to lift its ban.

Cutsinger noted that bar owners still would need to apply to the state for a permit to install and operate the machines. He said those permits may not be approved for at least six months, and it could be a year before the first machines are in operation in Maple Park.

The trustees estimated three businesses ultimately could obtain permits and begin operating the machines in the village.

She is survived by her son, John D. Hayes and his wife, Patricia Shine Hayes; as well as the loves of her life, her two grandchildren, Dr. John Ryan (m. Patricia Marsh) Hayes of Chicago and Jennifer Mary Hayes of Geneva. She also is survived by her sister, Dolores Dwyer Nagle of Hurley, Wis. She has 15 nieces and nephews, 27 grandnieces and grandnephews and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Anna S. Delafield; and his brother, David L. Howe.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen B. Howe; children, John K. of Irving, Texas, Rebecca M. of Chicago, Richard W. Jr. of San Diego and Lawrence II of Katy, Texas; stepchildren, Peter DeShazo of Cambridge, Mass., and Jane Johnson of Tampa; their 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and brothers, Fisher of Washington, D.C., and Lawrence of Winnetka.

A resident of Geneva from 1956 to 1980, Warren was born Jan. 21, 1924, to the late Hester and Lawrence Howe of Winnetka, and graduated from The North Shore Country Day School and Harvard College.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and marrying the late Evelyn Coolidge Howe, he had a 33-year career at the Belden Corporation of Chicago, and continued in 1980 as president of Windings Inc. in Patterson, N.Y. A celebration of Warren’s life

BEATRICE H. (WITT) MEEKS Born: July 17, 1920; in Fingle, N.D. Died: Aug. 12, 2013; in Geneva GENEVA – Beatrice H. (Witt) Meeks of Geneva passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at her home surrounded by family.

The daughter of Theodore and Augusta Witt, Beatrice was born July 17, 1920, in Fingle, N.D. She moved to Aurora at three months old, where she lived until graduation from East Aurora High School in 1938. Following graduation, she moved to Geneva and married Arthur Meeks of Batavia in 1943.

In 1960, she became affiliated with G. H. “Doc” Morgan of Morgan’s Inc. in St. Charles, and in 1974 they became co-owners of Doc Morgan Inc., selling in 2001.

Beatrice was a longtime member of the Geneva Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Frank) Lievrouw of St. Charles and Mari Jo Kirby; five grandsons, Daniel (Jamie), Jason (Wendi) and Michael (Kristin) Lievrouw, and David (Jen) and Bryan Kirby; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arthur, who passed away in 1976; her parents; her brother, Wallace Witt; nine sisters, Olga Ellsbury, Sophia James, Anna Hess, Martha Lance, Alma Layden, Ida Schwabe, Esther Jensen, Frances Renner and Eunice Anderson.

Funeral services for Beatrice will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 East State St. (Route 38), Geneva, with Pastor Trudy Stoffel officiating.

Burial will follow in River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia.

The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday, Aug. 17, at the funeral home.

Police seek suspect in indecent exposure

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove police are looking for a man they say exposed himself Monday afternoon in the area of Hampstead Drive and Westbourne Avenue in Sugar Grove.

Police responded to a call about indecent exposure in that area at 4:39 p.m., according to a news release. The offender exposed himself and asked the victim, “do you like this,” according to police.

The victim reported that the offender was driving a black sun-faded older model Dodge Durango or similar vehicle.

The victim described the male offender as early 20s with a short, “buzz-cut” style haircut.

Sgt. Gary Fenili said the victim was a female juvenile who was walking the family dog when she was approached by the suspect. He said the suspect never left his vehicle.

“We haven’t had any leads on it,” he said. “We’re thinking it’s an isolated incident at this time.”

He said police planned to interview the victim again to find out more information.

Police are asking that anyone who has seen a vehicle similar to the one reported or have a home surveillance system in the neighborhood to call 911.

ELBURN – Right around the time Alec Koczka was learning to drive a car, he was getting acclimated to another driver’s seat – that of an airplane.

He said learning to fly a plane isn’t all that different.

“It’s kind of like driving a car for the first time,” he said. “It’s nerve racking, but once you do it, it’s the best.”

After earning his pilot’s license last year, the 18-yearold Kaneland High School graduate is planning to study aviation maintenance management at Lewis University in Romeoville.

“I’m going to have a double major – one end is flying, and the other end is mechanical,” he said, adding that he hopes to someday become a pilot for a commercial airline.

Koczka said he began pursuing a pilot’s license at age 15, but started taking lessons more seriously when he was 16, he said.

It was on his 17th birthday that he got his private pilot’s license.

He rented a plane and trained at Fly America in

Monroe, Wis. Although flying solo is liberating, he said that’s not the most thrilling aspect of being a pilot.

“I’d have to say landing’s the most exhilarating out of everything. Taking off is OK, but it’s not as hard. With landing, there’s so much more that could go wrong,” Koczka said. “Don’t get me wrong – everything else is fun, too.”

His interest in flying goes back to when he was 5 years old, he said.

He remembers his dad and his late grandfather taking him to air shows as a child.

He said he always had an idea that he would pursue flying as a career, “but that’s what really sealed it,” he said.

In order to be a good pilot, Koczka said he needs good judgment above all else. It also helps to be responsible, hard working and respectful, he added.

“It’s basically everything you should be. That’s what you need to do to be a pilot,” he said. “My parents supported me 110 percent of the way.

I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Selling guns to teens not the smartest idea BLOOMBERG NEWS You will be surprised to know that American youth suffer from a debilitating lack of access to firearms.

At least, that’s the contention advanced in a petition filed late last month by the National Rifle Association, which asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower-court ruling that upholds a law banning federally licensed gun dealers from selling handguns to anyone younger than 21.

It’s worth keeping a few things in mind when contemplating the NRA’s latest effort to promote gun sales. First, every state in the union forbids the sale of alcohol to people under age 21. Second, as a 2013 report from the National Academy of Sciences states, behaviors and characteristics associated with adolescence are “positively correlated with increased risk for firearm violence.”

In fact, according to research by Daniel Webster of Johns Hopkins University, the correlation is particularly acute between the ages of 18 and 20, when the homicide-offense rate peaks.

Anyone 18 and older can buy a long gun from a federally licensed dealer.

Anyone 18 and older can buy a handgun from an unlicensed supplier (although a few states require residents to be 21). As we see it, restrictions on youthful gun ownership already seem pretty porous.

The NRA disagrees.

“Given the number of laws enacted by the federal government, states and

localities in the years when a mistaken understanding of the Second Amendment held sway, one would have expected a major reconsideration of extant firearms laws to have occurred,” the group’s petition states. “It has not. Instead, jurisdictions have engaged in massive resistance to the clear import of those landmark decisions, and the lower federal courts, long out of the habit of taking the Second Amendment seriously, have largely facilitated the resistance.”

So, there you have it.

Given the court’s landmark 2008 decision creating an individual right to gun ownership, the NRA doesn’t understand why gun laws haven’t evaporated nationwide. The NRA’s problem isn’t “massive resistance;” it’s common sense and law.

Even Justice Antonin Scalia, writing on the Second Amendment right to bear arms for a narrow 5-4 majority, noted, “Of course the right was not unlimited.”

In fact, gun rights in the U.S. have always been limited – and in ways far more strict (and sensible) than what we see today. The reason for this is not hard to discern – guns are lethal, and they are especially dangerous in the hands of young people, who sometimes lack the maturity and self-control to manage confrontations.

The Roberts court has already liberalized gun laws far beyond the scope of any previous Supreme Court. Now would be a good time to stop. The court should reject the NRA’s petition.

Rotolo fails to meet AYP for fourth year

In his letter, Maciejewski said the school will provide those students who need help with specific interventions and targeted curricular materials by providing professional development to their teachers and monitoring student growth.

Rotolo parent Emily Farrell, who will have a sixthgrade student and an eighthgrade student at Rotolo this fall, said she is concerned that some students are falling behind at the school.

“What needs to be changed?” Farrell asked.

“What do we need to do to make it better?”

She said the solution needs to be a team effort.

“Everybody has to step up,” she said.

BATAVIA – For the fourth year, Rotolo Middle School did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress standards.

“Based on preliminary data from the state for the 2012-2013 school year, we did not meet adequate yearly progress targets of 92.5 percent for reading and math for particular subgroups of students,” Rotolo Middle School Principal Steve Maciejewski said in a letter to parents, which was issued in July.

Under the national No Child Left Behind Act, every child is expected to be proficient in reading and math by 2014. For 2012-13, the benchmark was set at 92.5 percent.

Subgroups – groups of at least 45 students characterized by ethnicity, income level, disabilities and other traits – can prevent a school from making AYP even when the school meets the benchmarks overall. Such is the case with

“We feel like it’s the perfect location right there,” Lighthouse Academy owner Shannen Flores said. “We’re really excited to be there.”

Lighthouse Academy and Accelerated Rehabilitation are both new to Elburn, a village whose small-town character appealed to them.

“Our main guy has been wanting to get in Elburn for many, many years,” said Rich DeCarlo, facility manager for Accelerated Rehabilitation.

“He likes small towns, the community feel.”

Both he and Flores expressed interest in becoming part of the community and intend to be at Elburn Days this weekend.

“Something we take pride in is our community relations,” Flores said. “We love to be a part of community events.”

ELBURN – The owners of Da Capo Music Studio have enjoyed their years at the Elburn Community Center, but with demand for more recitals, it’s time to move, they said.

“We’re literally having them every other week,” co-owner Ben Westfall said, noting each recital requires set-up and tear-down. “The new space will have its own recital hall.”

The music studio is preparing to relocate to commercial space near Routes 47 and 38 in Elburn, an area that also is attracting Lighthouse Academy, a child care center for children ages six weeks to six years, and Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers, a physical therapy clinic.

ELBURN – From Ronald McDonald in the opening-night parade to mud volleyball and an “American Idol”-inspired talent competition, the Elburn Lions Club’s annual party – Elburn Days – is expected to attract crowds to the village.

The festival will be Friday through Sunday, but there are some associated events that start as early as Thursday. For information and a detailed list of events, visit www.elburnlions.com.

As the group’s outgoing president, Pam Hall will be running this year’s event. Hall has been attending the festival for years, and she said it has appeal for many. There will be a beer tent, a truck and tractor pull, performances from live bands and a community stage, at which the Elburn Idol competition will play out.

“I think what makes it special is that we have a smalltown atmosphere,” Hall said.

“It’s the fact that you can have a family reunion or a class reunion, or you can meet new people and new friends.

It’s enjoyable for people of all ages.”

The event’s kickoff is the parade that starts at 6 p.m.

Friday in downtown Elburn and runs south on Route 47 to Lions Park, at 500 Filmore St. in Elburn. But downtown Elburn will host a sidewalk sale starting at noon Thursday.

That returns at 10 a.m. Friday, and there is a book sale at 9 a.m. Friday at Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St., Elburn, as well as a rummage sale at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Gall Catholic Church, 120 W. Shannon St., Elburn.

Ronald McDonald will appear in the parade and perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the community stage. The beer tent opens at 5 p.m. the same day, and rides and food begin at 6 p.m.

SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School Board is aiming to fill its vacant board position soon with hopes of seating a new member by Sept. 9, according to officials.

On Monday, the board approved, with regret, the resignation of Joe Oberweis, who has been a school board member there since being elected to a four-year term in 2011. Oberweis previously stated that he resigned because he and his family are moving to Batavia, which is outside of Kaneland district boundaries.

“I will miss his valuable voice on the board,” board president Cheryl Krauspe wrote in an email. “He asked all the right questions. I am grateful he was willing to serve.”

Krauspe said in the email that the school board has 45 days to fill the position, “but the board is attempting to move forward more rapidly by seating a new member at our Sept. 9 meeting.”

The board is now seeking applications from anyone interested in running for the remainder of the term, which ends April 7, 2015. The board seeks a new member who is not from Blackberry Township, because the board already has three members from that area.

Those interested in applying should submit a letter of application and resume at the Board of Education at 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park, IL 60151, by 8 a.m. on Aug. 26.

Applicants should be at least 18 years old, a resident of the Kaneland district for at least one year preceding the appointment, a registered voter and not be a child sex offender, according to a news release.

Board members plan to conduct interviews between Aug. 26 and early September.

On Sunday, there is mud volleyball, a HobbyTown charity race, sponsored by HobbyTown USA, and 7th Heaven is the featured band at 7 p.m.

Among the standout features of the festival is the two-stage concept. There is a community stage, which hosts Elburn Idol and other events, such as a Hula Hoop contest and performances from local dance groups. Then on the

main stage, prominent local bands provide entertainment.

“It’s kind of a menagerie of a lot of different things,” Hall said of what is offered at Elburn Days. “We try to keep it as family-friendly and festive as possible.”

This year, the Lions will ask for a $2 donation for parking. There is no mandatory parking fee, but the donations will help the Lions restore the park after the festival.

Hall said the festival is the most significant event the Lions Club puts on each

year. She stressed that it is “sponsored 100 percent by the Lions Club.” And while the mission of any Lions Club is to help those who are visually impaired, she said the Elburn Club goes beyond that, including a literacy program, monthly free spaghetti meal events and help for those who are in need. The club also recently staged a free, two-day kids safety camp.

“We do a lot,” Hall said.

“We try really hard. ... We do our best to help if somebody has a need.”

Jewish school to help Elburn wildlife center in projects, fundraising

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Students at the Fox Valley Jewish School in Geneva will work on volunteer projects at the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn for this school year, officials said.

Board member Mim Evans of Geneva said the school always partners its students with a charity for the school term.

“One of the things we try to impress upon the kids is the importance of public service,” Evans said. “Last year, they worked with Field of Dreams Horse Rescue – and being kids, they really love the animals. I was looking for an animal-based nonprofit for this year.”

The students will go out to the wildlife center – which takes in injured and orphaned wildlife – for a first visit when school begins in the fall, Evans said. Then they will begin projects appropriate to each age group.

“The smaller children will

be working on treat bags for squirrels,” Evans said. “They will put treats inside newspapers so the squirrels can tear them open. The older kids are going to be working on nesting boxes and also on big screen door enclosures for the birdhouse so people can go in and out and the birds won’t escape.”

Students also will work on informational posters that the center can put up, as well as a spring fundraiser, but Evans said they have not worked out details for the fundraiser as of yet.

The Jewish school had 45 students from ages 3 to 14 last term who helped out at the horse rescue, Evans said. Because registration is ongoing, she does not know how many will participate this year.

“The wildlife center staff likes the idea of working with the kids,” Evans said. “It’s a good fit and we’re excited about it.”

Laura Kirk, an animal care specialist at the center, said they were looking forward to the support from the Fox Valley Jewish School.

“It means a lot to us,” Kirk said. “We run entirely off of donations, and we are an all-volunteer organization. That they will do extra projects that we might not have time to do while we are taking care of animals – it’s really special to us.”

BATAVIA – Three birds – including two near Batavia – have tested positive for the West Nile virus in Kane County.

The birds were the first this year to test positive for the virus in Kane County, although mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile over the past few weeks.

“We’re seeing the typical progression as it proliferates in the area,” said Tom Schlueter, Kane County Health Department spokesman.

Two of the birds were collected in different locations near Batavia, and another was collected in Aurora. West Nile is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Most people with the virus

have no clinical symptoms of illness, but some might become ill up to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito, Schlueter said.

So far, there have been no human cases of West Nile reported in Kane County or the state. Last year, Kane County had 13 human cases of West Nile virus and one death.

“Last summer was unusually hot and dry,” Schlueter said.

He said a hot and dry summer provides ideal conditions for the species of mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus.

To prevent West Nile virus or any other mosquito-borne illnesses, he said residents should take such precautions as avoiding being outdoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

He zipped from first to third before scoring his final run in a Kane County uniform and played in 114 of the team’s 115 games until his promotion Monday to Advanced-A Daytona.

Fans awaiting the next phase of the Cubs’ rebuilding project hear Vogelbach’s name and rightly conjure images

of the burly 6-foot, 250-pound first baseman slamming home runs. They shouldn’t shy away from visions of durability, though. Those might be less celebrated, but they certainly apply.

“I don’t think people realize that I played point guard my whole life. I’ve always been playing a lot of sports. I’ve always been athletic,” Vogelbach said. “So that’s something I take pride in and always will take pride in.”

Vogelbach answered the latest mobility challenge upon his promotion. Cougars man-

ager Mark Johnson and hitting coach Tom Beyers informed the 2011 second-round pick of the move around 9:30 p.m.

Monday.

Vogelbach’s ride to the airport was set to pick him up around 4 a.m. Tuesday, with his flight departing about three hours later. Vogelbach was in the lineup for the opener of Tuesday’s home doubleheader against Clearwater, batting fourth as Daytona’s designated hitter. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Vogelbach batted .284 with 17 home runs and 71 RBIs with

the Cougars, closing his stay on a seven-game hitting streak.

He was named the Cubs’ organizational minor league player of the month for July.

Well-liked by the Cougars’ faithful throughout the season, Vogelbach knows he’ll miss many things about Geneva, but perhaps the big crowds most of all. The Cougars eclipsed 10,000 in attendance twice during what proved to be Vogelbach’s final homestand, and drew a season-high 11,979 fans Saturday.

In addition to emerging from relative obscurity with his lights-out senior season, Starai said the pace of his recruitment was slowed by moving from one residence to another in St. Charles, providing a distraction from his college planning.

His Team Illinois travel program trekked to the spring training headquarters for the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians in Arizona this summer. As part of the trip, players heard from professional baseball personnel about the rigors of trying to make a career out of baseball.

“It definitely motivates you to keep working hard, to try and get better every day and just knowing that as you go up, it doesn’t get any easier,” said Starai, a hard-throwing right-hander.

Specifically, Starai thinks refining his repertoire will be crucial as he seeks to build off his breakthrough season for East.

“I’ve got a pretty good mix of pitches – I’ve got to have each pitch ready to go every day or otherwise college hitters are going to be able to pick that up,” Starai said. “If you only have two pitches [working] … it’s

going to be a rough outing for you,” Starai said.

Attention please: Wheaton Academy junior Josh Ruggles’ epic 3-point shooting performance last week certainly didn’t go unnoticed.

Ruggles, whose 135 3-point makes in 147 attempts on Thursday quickly spread around the Internet, has recently drawn national media attention from sources ranging from ESPN to CBSSports.com to the Huffington Post and beyond.

Now Ruggles hopes the publicity bonanza expands his college recruitment options. He has received a little Division I interest and recently played in a camp at Illinois State, but so far the 6-foot combo guard mostly has attracted interest from smaller programs.

Matt Starai made short work of hitters during his stellar spring for the St. Charles East baseball team.

His college recruitment, on the other hand, played out at a markedly more deliberate pace.

Starai only recently selected NAIA-Judson University as his college destination, beginning this fall.

“It was a late in the process thing,” Starai said Monday about his interest in the Elgin school. “I actually just signed about a week ago. I feel like it just ended up being the best fit for me as far as being close to home, great coaching, and knowing some of the guys and how hard they work there. It’s going to be a fun experience.”

Starai was the Kane County Chronicle Baseball Player of the Year in the spring after going 11-1 with a 0.59 ERA for the Saints, helping propel East to an IHSA Class 4A third-place state finish. He struck out 89 batters and walked 18.

After the season ended, he said he was considering junior college options in addition to a Division II program in Tennessee. But Judson caught his eye as the summer unfolded, thanks in part to the presence of a pair of former Saints on the Eagles’ roster.

Former East standouts Tony Rallo and Luke Rojas are both part of Judson’s program.

Gretzky Geneva-bound: Cubs outfield prospect Trevor Gretzky – son of former NHL superstar Wayne – tweeted Tuesday that he has been promoted from Short-A Boise to the Cougars.

Gretzky, 20, batted .256 in 27 games with Boise this season, collecting three doubles and six RBIs while competing for playing time with a strong Hawks outfield.

In 2012, he hit .304 in 35 games for Rookie League Mesa after the Cubs selected him in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Oaks Christian High School in California.

Cougars’ fans’ first chance to see one of The Great One’s offspring will come when the team begins a seven-game homestand Saturday night against Clinton and Beloit.

Wayne Gretzky won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, the favorite team of Cougars left-handers Sheldon McDonald and Rob Zastryzny, both born in Canada. Trevor Gretzky wore No. 9 for Boise, a number Beyers currently occupies.

Allen making name: Geneva product Brad Allen, a right-hander in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, pitched at least six innings in seven of his nine starts before throwing a no-hitter for South Bend on Saturday.

Allen retired the last 25 West Michigan batters in order after a two-out walk in the first inning. He struck out nine.

Out of baseball for much of last summer, Allen went undrafted out of Arkansas State in 2011. A late 2012 resurgence with the independent Florence (Ky.) Freedom earned him an invitation to D’backs spring training in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“Showed up to spring training and kind of showed the organization what I could do. A couple people liked me here or there, so they sent me to A-ball,” Allen said. “I’ve worked through some tough times, but also, the past two months I feel like I’ve made good strides and made a pretty good story. It’s nice to get your name out there this way.”

Shucking the system: Monday’s last at-bat victory helped the Cougars improve their season record against Western Division-leading Cedar Rapids to 4-10. The teams play three more games in Iowa from Aug. 28 to 30.

Cedar Rapids hasn’t just handled the Cougars, though. Kernels manager Jake Mauer credits the parent Minnesota Twins’ deep stable of prospects for easing the team’s transition when the organization recently promoted highly-touted talent such as first baseman Dalton Hicks and outfielders Byron Buxton and J.D. Williams to Advanced-A Fort Meyers.

“Obviously, we’ve had the Buxtons and the Hickses and the Williams of the world and some of those guys,” Mauer said, “and now they’re moving on in the Florida State League. And the guys that are here are still pretty good players.

“We still have the same kind of core guys … and then guys that have come up have been ready and contributed and really kind of kept the team chemistry pretty good.”

Right fielder Adam Brett Walker definitely fits in the “core” category with his league-leading 26 home runs and 103 RBIs.

Huskies confident in versatile group of running backs

Harris started with a bang last season, scoring a 7-yard touchdown in his first game against Iowa. He’s been limited in practice while recovering from an ankle injury – he missed the final four games of last season and didn’t practice during the spring. He’ll be ready to go for Iowa, and is a more well-rounded

player as a true sophomore.

“The game is more slow. Everything’s easier for me this year,” Harris said. “So now I can just pay attention to the key things instead of learning the whole offense.”

Harris has a year in the offense and his blocking has improved. When he was being recruited out of Leo High

School in Chicago, Harris realized that in NIU’s offense, tailbacks need to be able to do a number of things.

NIU coach Rod Carey feels like every back he has is versatile.

“That’s our offense,” he said. “They have to block, catch passes and run the football. So that’s our expectations there.”

Carey says injured WR Lewis will ‘be fine’

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois junior wide receiver Tommylee Lewis suffered a leg injury during Monday morning’s practice and didn’t practice Tuesday.

The injury doesn’t seem serious, but it sounds as if Lewis should be out for at

least a few days while it heals.

Lewis should be a big weapon for Jordan Lynch this season.

“He’ll be fine,” NIU coach Rod Carey said after Tuesday’s practice at Huskie Stadium. “He just needs some time with it. He’ll be back.”

Other notes from Tuesday’s practice: • Both sophomore Matt McIntosh and redshirt fresh-

man Drew Hare have been taking snaps at quarterback with the second team.

It’s still too early for Carey to decide who will be the backup quarterback, but he said it’s a tight competition.

“Right now, it’s pretty close. I think they’re competing, which is healthy,” Carey said. “I’m not ready to say which one’s got it yet because

I think it’s that close.”

• Junior defensive tackle Anthony Wells hasn’t practiced yet while recovering from a broken foot. Carey hopes to have Wells back soon, and said he’ll be practicing before the season opener.

• I’ve seen freshman wideout Aregeros Turner get firstteam reps the past few days.

He’s got a great shot to see the field as a true freshman.

• Tight end Tim Semisch caught a couple of touchdowns in red-zone drills Tuesday. I’m interested to see how the Huskies use the 6-foot-8, 266-pounder this year.

• NIU continues fall camp today, with practices at 10:05 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. All practices are open to the public.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois fans are familiar with Akeem Daniels, the senior who led all Huskie tailbacks with 447 rushing yards last season.

However, the NIU coaching staff is confident in a number of backs.

Keith Harris Jr. played in nine games as a true freshman and Cameron Stingily has been in the program three years, and is starting to come into his own as a running back after playing his first two seasons at linebacker.

Junior Giorgio Bowers carried the ball just 12 times a year ago, but averaged 5.3 yards a carry.

All four backs could see time in the Huskies’ rotation this year.

“We’ll probably rotate three guys in.

Three, four, somewhere in there and probably not miss a beat,” NIU offensive coordinator Bob Cole said. “Everybody does a little something different.

It’s a good group back there.”

Daniels hasn’t practiced during fall camp while recovering from a foot injury, but he should be a factor in the running game soon.

Should NIU decide to play a true freshman, Joel Bouagnon and Jordan Huff could also be options, as both have gotten reps with the second team, though Huff has been out with a leg injury the past few days.

Even without Daniels at the moment, Cole is confident in his offense’s depth at the tailback position.

“Gives us three solid guys right there to put in the game,” Cole said of Stingily, Harris and Bowers. “We’re feeling pretty good about where we are at tail-

‘March’ a powerful civil rights memoir

By MICHAEL CAVNA The Washington Post Rep. John Lewis brought his young collaborator to the Alabama bridge, to where he long ago spilled his blood, because it wasn’t enough to simply see it in photos. The artist, hired to render the congressman’s memoir, needed to listen to the history right where freedom was forged through the fear and tear gas – and to stand where John Lewis stood on that day he thought he was going to die.

That infamous incident on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, on that Bloody Sunday in March 1965, opens Lewis’s graphic-novel debut, “March: Book One,” a riveting and beautiful civil-rights story that hits stores Tuesday.

Created with award-winning cartoonist Nate Powell and Lewis staffer Andrew Aydin, “March” fittingly lands two weeks before the 50th anniversary of the Aug. 28 March on Washington. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech as the final featured speaker to step to the Lincoln Memorial lectern; Lewis, then a 23-yearold leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, was the day’s youngest speaker.

Now, poignantly, Lewis is our last.

The congressman is scheduled to attend the anniversary ceremonies as the march’s sole surviving featured speaker.

Which is why this graphic novel should be embraced as a gift to history; “March” digs in with the compelling perspective of someone who lived it – who could see eventual victory even through the beatings and the jailhouse bars.

The sickening crack of the police batons. The rolling klink of the tear-gas canisters. And the bone-crushing thud of bodies hitting the ground beneath men on horseback. From Page 1, Lewis and Aydin’s words, and Powell’s deft pen, put you squarely in the bruising maw of a movement.

At 73, the Georgia Democrat is living history, and he knows that a graphic novel holds unique storytelling powers. “It’s another way for somebody to understand what it was like and what we tried to do,” Lewis told me. “And I want young children to feel it. Almost taste it. To make it real. ... It’s not just the words but the action and the drama and the movement that bring it alive.”

The graphic novel “March: Book One” is the first of a planned trilogy, created by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, with art by Nate Powell. through a comic because five years ago, when Aydin told fellow staffers in Lewis’s office that he was headed to San Diego Comic-Con, he was met with some “geek” teasing. Not from the congressman, though. Lewis, many decades their senior, proved to be the hippest voice in the room in the ways of comics. The staffers stopped joking when he told them it was a comic book that had helped persuade him to join the fight for civil rights.

As a young man, Lewis got his hands on the 1958 comic book “Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story,” which, he said, with its poster-colored lesson of nonviolent protest, inspired many student activists. “It was about the way of love,” Lewis says. “We were beaten and arrested ... and that comic book inspired me to make trouble. But it was the good kind of trouble.”

Lewis, in turn, has written a graphic novel laced with life lessons. And to his credit, in penning “March,” he has hewed to King’s advice on preaching from the pulpit. “Make it plain, son,” Lewis remembers King saying. “Make it plain. And make it real.”

And, man, does Lewis make it real.

This is no sanitized picture book. One of the single most striking panels depicts the recovered body of Emmett Till; the

pen-and-ink image possesses a power somewhat different from the horrific archival photos. Lewis included this panel with an express purpose.

“I often think about [how] Emmett Till was lynched in August of 1955,” he said. “I remember it so well. I was 15 years old – I was in the 10th grade. I was working out in the field. And I thought: It could be me.”

“March” also doesn’t shy away from using the N-word, to powerful effect.

The congressman said the collaborators discussed the import of this choice. “I wanted to make it real,” he said, “and not try to sugarcoat it.”

From school integration to the lunch counter sit-ins to the church bombings, Lewis succeeds in capturing the smoldering tension of the times. He describes how even at the height of the movement, in states like Alabama and Mississippi, everyone “lived in fear.”

Lewis, however, decides to have an “executive session” with himself and learns how to tackle that fear head-on.

“March” also movingly depicts his emotions upon the first of his 40 or so arrests. “The first time I was arrested was in 1960 – I felt free,” he says. “It made me stronger.”

Because Lewis is a man of warmth and wit, “March” doesn’t stick only to the grim. Avoid heat stroke with common-sense precautions Dear Doctor K: My brother and I are planning a long bike trip this summer. I’m worried about the heat. What can I do to prevent heat stroke?

Dear Reader: Normally, the human body does a good job of regulating its temperature. As you’d expect, your body tends to heat up more easily when it is surrounded by hot air. It also heats up during exercise, since hard-working muscles generate heat. When you exercise in hot weather, your body is particularly challenged to get rid of excess heat so that it can maintain a normal body temperature.

A part of our brain is constantly monitoring how hot we are. When our body temperature starts to rise above normal, the brain sends signals that cause the blood vessels near our skin to open wide, which in turn causes us to sweat. Heat leaves the blood vessels and enters the air around us. Evaporation of the sweat pulls even more heat from the body.

Spending too much time in the heat without drinking enough fluids can hamper the body’s cooling system. As a result, body temperature can rise high enough to make a person sick.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The first symptoms of heat illness are called heat exhaustion.

They include headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps and fatigue. If you experience these symptoms, get out of the heat immediately. Seek out air-conditioning. Drink water. If possible, take a cool shower or use a hose to soak yourself. If you don’t take steps to cool yourself, heat exhaustion can worsen into heat stroke.

Heat stroke is serious and potentially life-threatening. Body temperature rises to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. This can cause confusion, staggering, faintness, hallucinations, agitation or unconsciousness. It can affect internal organs and lead to coma or death. If you or your brother experience symptoms of heat stroke, seek emergency help immediately.

While you wait for help, cool the person’s body from the outside. Remove tight or unnecessary clothing, spray the person with water, blow cool air on the

person or wrap the person loosely in wet sheets. If you have ice packs, place them at the person’s neck, groin and armpits to accelerate cooling.

During your bike trip, do the following to help you stay cool and avoid heat illness: • Drink lots of water throughout the day.

• Stay indoors in an air-conditioned area whenever you feel too warm.

• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

• Avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). If you must participate, take frequent breaks.

• Limit the time you wear a helmet by taking it off between activities.

• Drink less caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.

If you take these precautions and stay alert for early symptoms of heat illness, you should have a fun – and safe – bike trip.

Dr. Wallace: Some time ago, you wrote a column about the difficulty schools have concerning student tardies. You agreed that tardies gave teachers and administrators a huge headache and that it was difficult to come up with a truly effective way to “encourage” students to get to class on time. You suggested several incentives, which you felt were more effective than punishment, and we are now using some of them.

I am a principal of a Continuation School in Orange County, Calif. Our school is designed to meet the needs of students who have a difficult time functioning in a traditional high school.

Some students were even sent here because of excessive classroom tardies. Our policy is that students who have no tardies, or very few tardies, are rewarded.

These rewards include preferential parking space for a month, free school newspaper and yearbook, free tickets to district basketball and football games, free coupons for pizza (donated by a parent who owns a pizza parlor) and free ice cream that is sold on school grounds.

For those who have more than the allotted number of tardies per class, after-school detention is the punishment.

For those who seriously abuse the tardy policy, the student’s grade is lowered one or two grades, depending on the number of tardies.

I still feel that the best friends available to school administrators in attempting to lower student tardies are the parents of “always late” students.

Dear Abby: My 22-year-old daughter and her two young children live with me. She doesn’t work, which is fine. I don’t mind supporting her because I’d rather have the kids see their mom.

I spent most of my life as a single mom, working long hours and not seeing my kids. My work has finally paid off, and I’m at a point where, while not rich, I can support my daughter and grandbabies.

The problem is the baby daddy.

He has a history of drug abuse, theft and jail time. He works only part-time jobs, which he loses monthly. He gives my daughter nothing and treats her as if she owes him.

I don’t want to support him, but he has moved in and won’t leave my house. I have told him to go, that he’s welcome to visit the kids, but he ignores me. He acts like he’s king of the castle when it’s my home!

I told my daughter, and she ignores me as well. My oldest son has offered to talk to them for me.

I don’t want to lose my grandbabies. They are my purpose in life.

Let’s give the bidding conventions back to the experts. Let’s concentrate on the card play, winning the necessary number of tricks. Whatever conventions are used, often the same final contract will be reached.

In today’s deal, South is in six no-trump. West leads the spade 10. Declarer wins with dummy’s king, then calls for a low club, getting ready to claim. But when East discards a heart, how should South react?

South opened with a strong and artificial two clubs. North responded three clubs to show five-plus clubs and eight-plus points. Then North’s four-diamond rebid was a modern convention, Redwood – Roman Key Card Blackwood in clubs.

South’s reply showed four key cards (three aces and the club king, or four aces). North put his partner into six no-trump, a wise choice given the bad club break.

Declarer has only 11 top winners: three spades, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. If he gives West the club king now, South will be forced to find the diamond queen. Instead, he should win with his club ace, then lead the club five. West must duck; otherwise, South claims. Then, after winning the trick with dummy’s queen, declarer plays a spade to his ace and runs the diamond jack through West. Even if the finesse loses, South has three spades, four hearts, three diamonds and two clubs for his contract.

Kindness Campaign has big plans KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla By the end of the week, banners promoting the Kindness Campaign will be hanging in libraries and Jewel stores in Elburn and Sugar Grove. And organizers are expecting to continue to spread the word at this weekend’s Elburn Days festival, with a big crowd expected to march in Friday night’s parade.

The group will have a presence at the annual festival, which runs Friday through Sunday at Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., Elburn, with at least 75 people marching with the group at the parade.

“It’s just begun,” said Renee Dee, who founded a nonprofit organization, P.E.A.K. for Kids, which stands for promoting enrichment and kindness. She said the best way to describe the Kindness Campaign is that it is a community collaboration, inspired by the Knights Against Bullying group and sponsored by P.E.A.K. for Kids.

Leigh Ann Reusche has marveled at the progress made since Knights Against Bullying formed in an effort to address the issue in District 302. That movement began about a year ago, when some were making plans to appear at a school board meeting and push for change and solutions to bullying. The group took its name from the Kaneland High

Reusche was put on a bullying task force in the district, but there was a desire to go beyond that. Earlier this year, the Kindness Campaign was launched as a way to attack bullying by preventing it from taking place. Others joined the cause, including scouting organizations, the Elburn Lions Club, the Geneva-based Changing Children’s World Foundation and the Kaneland School District.

The word has spread, and Dee and Reusche consider the Elburn Days event to be significant. Members will be at the event, and youths can come and help create more banners, which include kids tracing

Reusche said organizations were eager to join the Kindness Campaign. When Knights Against Bullying first was formed, the mission was to identify bullying as a problem in the district and that “it’s not an issue that is going away,” she said. That’s still a focus, and Knights Against Bullying remains committed to that cause.

A key way to address that is to promote kindness. But both Dee and Reusche said the mission against bullying remains, and if it is identified in a specific instance, it needs

to be addressed.

“It’s not acceptable to just walk past kids being mean to one another and say, ‘kids will be kids.’ … We all know that’s not acceptable behavior,” Dee said.

Those interested are urged to contact the organization, as organizers say they would welcome more participants in the parade. While anyone who wants to be part of it can just show up at Friday’s parade, Reusche said it’s best to send an email to kaboutreach@ gmail.com.
