Festival of the Horse and Drum set ST. CHARLES – An event, The Festival of the Horse and Drum, takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, with some events at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. The event includes the Grand Tournament of St. Charles, an international jousting and games tournament and the Equus Film Festival. This event will include the Native American Indian Association of Illinois who will present traditional Inter-Tribal Pow-Wow and Drum.

Crews demolish the former St. Charles post office Friday at 1405 W. Main St., St. Charles.

Former post office demolished

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A former post office in St. Charles is being demolished to make way for an auto parts store.

The United States Postal Service recently sold the John E. Grotberg Post Office Building to St. Charles Partners LLC for $900,000, according to documents filed Aug. 6 with the Kane County Recorder’s Office.

Located at 1405 W. Main St. near the Valley Shopping Center, the post office was named after

U.S. Rep. John E. Grotberg of St. Charles. Grotberg served in the Illinois General Assembly for 12 years before he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984. He died in 1986 at age 61.

Soon, the post office will be gone.

Robinette Demolition Inc. began demolishing the structure Aug. 6 and should be finished sometime this week, said Traci Henderson, who is overseeing the work.

Grobmar Investments, a Vernon Hills-based retail shopping center developer, intends to

develop the site for an O’Reilly Auto Parts store, said Carol Thoen of the company.

“We’re still bidding out for a general contractor,” she said.

Based in Missouri, O’Reilly Auto Parts operates more than 4,000 stores in 42 states and is adding 190 locations this year, according to its website.

Although it has stores throughout the Chicago suburbs – including nearby West Chicago, Elgin and Aurora – its website indicates this will be the retailer’s first shop in the Tri-Cities.

Man, 44, dies in 1-car crash in South Elgin

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – A 44-year-old Elgin man was killed in a one-car crash after hitting a tree in South Elgin about 3:45 p.m. Friday on Route 31 and Woodridge Circle, officials said.

A spokeswoman for the Kane County Coroner’s Office said Or-

lando S. Beville was pronounced dead at the scene at 4 p.m. from multiple blunt force trauma. He was the only occupant in the car, she said.

There will be no autopsy but the office will await toxicology results, she said.

Beville’s family is from Michigan, she said.

According to a news release

from South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District, Beville struck the tree with such force and caused so much damage, it took 90 minutes to extricate him.

South Elgin Sgt. Randy Endean said it did not appear that Beville was wearing a seat belt.

“Wearing a seatbelt would not have affected his survivability after the crash,” Endean said.

State Sen. “Every single constitutional officer in the State of Illinois was a Democrat from Chicago,” Rutherford said.

“And here I am, this conservative, Republican, white, male from Central Illinois, going to run statewide. … I’m telling you this, because for the election of 2014, we, as the Republican Party, need to change Springfield and put a Republican in the governor’s mansion.”

Rutherford said he reached out to diverse populations in order to win the treasurer post and that is what the Republican Party must do, as well.

“We, as the Republican Party, have got to accept and embrace people of different color and of different religion,” Rutherford said. “We don’t need to need to change our positions, we need to represent our positions [to] … communities of diversity.”

Dillard, who is assistant Senate Republican Leader, said he is a conservative reformer in the General Assem-

bly who never voted for a tax increase.

“I am tested, I am proven,” Dillard said. “I also once ran [the office] of the last clean competent governor of Illinois, Jim Edgar. … I care about the future of this state greatly. … We inherited a $1 billion deficit and left a $1.5 billion surplus when I was there, running the Edgar administration. We paid our bills in 17 days and we had an unemployment rate below the national average. … Wall Street increased our credit rating during that administration for the first time in state history.”

Dillard said he has a track record of being able to make a Democratic-led legislature do things not in its DNA, “to live within its means.”

Dillard said during the Edgar administration, “We made Michael Madigan the minority leader and we can do it again.”

Madigan is the state’s majority leader.

Lauzen said this year’s gathering was “the best ever” and especially meaningful for the big welcome back for his sons. As to why he hosted the fundraiser, Lauzen said the proceeds will pay for political expenses for when he is invit-

ed to various functions. If he decides to seek another term as county board chairman, Lauzen said he also could use the money for another campaign. But Lauzen said he is not declaring himself for a second term at this point.

County Board member Deborah Allen, D-Elgin, said she appreciated Rutherford’s comments about expanding the Republican base to include “all kinds and colors.

We are one country, one people. We must become more inclusive, not less.”

AURORA – About 700 people packed Chris Lauzen’s 19th Annual Porky Picnic fundraiser Saturday at the Vaughn Athletic Center, chowing down on barbecue chicken and – of course – pork chops.

Former state senator Lauzen, now in his first term as Kane County Board chairman, shook hands, held babies and passed out his contact information to constituents as supporters and friends talked, politicians glad-handed and children played games.

The event was highlighted as a public way for the Warriors’ Watch Riders to welcome home his two sons, Marine helicopter pilot Capt.

Ted Lauzen, 29, and Navy Lt. j.g. Hans Lauzen.

But it also allowed a local platform for Republican gubernatorial candidates businessman Bruce Rauner, Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford and State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, to state their qualifications and ask for support in the March 18 primary.

State Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, did not attend.

“I’ve never run for office before,” Rauner said. “My youngest daughter said, ‘Daddy, don’t run for governor. I don’t want you to go to jail.’

That’s a sad commentary on the corruption in our state, but that’s one of the reasons I want to run.”

Rauner said his platform is more jobs, less taxes, more support for schools and school choice, term limits of eight years, running the state like a business and breaking the hold government unions have on the state.

Rutherford said he won as a Republican for statewide office in a four-way race in 2010. His Democratic opponent was Robin Kelly – an African American woman from Chicago with an Irish last name – as well as candidates from the Green Party and Libertarian Party.

Lauzen “is the only Republican candidate of either party in Kane County that can pull 900 people together year after year.” Though organizers put the tally at 700, Frasz said the average is 700 to 900 each year.

“As for the governor candidates, we have a growing mix of Republican candidates,” Frasz said. “I hope it doesn’t get so big that they neutralize each other.”

Frasz said among the three candidates who spoke that night, he said he would likely support Rauner.

“I personally really connect with Bruce Rauner,” Frasz said. “As a businessman and an employer, and someone who’s struggling like all businesses to stay afloat right now, I like his message. And I like the fact that he’s financially independent, so he isn’t bought by the special interests.”

Michael Foote of Geneva said it was too soon to get behind any of the governor candidates. “Time will tell,” Foote said. “We’ll see what shakes out.”

Lois Benson of Batavia said she liked all three candidates for governor.

“To hear the comments and see the camaraderie, I think we can get some things going here that are good,” Benson said. Bob Moga of Big Rock, a former county board member from the 1960s liked all the governor hopefuls.

“They’re all good – as long as they’re Republican,” Moga said.

Daly wins championship flight Self-confidence spurs defending champ to repeat

CHARLES – It wasn’t exactly Joe Namath guaranteeing victory in Super Bowl III, but Matt Daly’s comments heading into the final weekend of the St. Charles Men’s Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course made it clear he fully expected to successfully defend his title.

“I didn’t guarantee it,” Daly insisted after defeating Chris Thomas, 5 and 3, in the championship match Sunday, “but it was sure in my mind.

It was the focal point of the week.”

After prevailing in a grueling 20-hole match against 2011 champion Jon Woods in the quarterfinals, Daly said he was “going to win the show.”

He backed up that expression of confidence with a dominating 7 and 5 victory over David Lanciotti on Saturday and by going 4-up on Thomas at the turn.

“I had a lot of good starts and really didn’t give anything back,” Daly said. “Everything was working.”

“My front nine I didn’t play too well,” Thomas said. “The back side, I started to turn it around. I hit a few good shots and that got me going again, but it was just too big a deficit to come back from at that point.”

Daly, 28, was 5-up with five holes to play, but Thomas put a beautiful hooking approach shot on the 378-yard, Par-4 No. 5 to within six feet of the pin to win the hole and stay alive.

Thomas ran into trouble off the tee on No. 6, however, going wide right of the trees lining the right side of the fairway. His next two shots both solidly connected with tree trunks.

Meanwhile, Daly’s second shot on the hole from the left rough was one of the highlights of his round.

That shot basically meant Thomas had to hole a chip shot from about 25 yards to have any chance of winning the hole, which he was unable to do. After missing a long bogey putt attempt, Thomas conceded the hole and the match.

Although he was confident he could defend his title, Daly

still found something to be surprised about in his weekend play.

“I’m really in shock right now,” he said. “I haven’t hit the irons this well in a couple years. The distance control today was exemplary. That was really what did it. I didn’t hit it on line all that often, but the distance was good.”

Daly’s next challenge will come Aug. 26, when he tries to qualify for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be played Oct. 5 to 10 in Birmingham, Ala. “Then, rest and relaxation,” Daly said. “It’s been a lot of fun playing in this. Cubs’ official: Bryant decision looms

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Speaking on AM-1280 WBIG on Saturday, Tim Wilken, Cubs special assistant to the president and general manager, said a decision on promoting first-round pick Kris Bryant from Short-A Boise is imminent.

With just less than a month remaining in the minor league regular season, Kane County or Advanced-A Daytona are the likely destinations for Bryant, a third baseman drafted second overall out of San Diego in June.

“I think we’re going to dis-

cuss that sometime next week and see what we think is probably the best plan for him,” Wilken told listeners.

Three members of the Cubs’ 2013 draft class have joined the Cougars since June, highlighted by Kris Bryant second-round left-hander Rob Zastryzny, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief Friday.

Fourth-round righty Tyler Skulina and infielder Giuseppe Papaccio, an 18thround selection, came to Ge-

neva earlier this summer after opening their pro careers at Boise.

Entering Saturday, Bryant was batting .412 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in his past 10 starts for Boise while raising his average to .300 in 15 games overall.

Should Bryant land with Daytona, he could have the opportunity for at least a few more at-bats.

Daytona leads the second-half race in the Florida State League North by 3.5 games.

The Cougars’ elimination number in their division race is 11.

GENEVA – Cougars right fielder Jose Dore lingered to lean against the dugout rail after Saturday’s series opener against Cedar Rapids.

He wasn’t pondering the game – the Cougars absorbed enough in a 6-0 loss to the Kernels – as much as catching his first glimpse of the high-flying Jesse White Tumblers.

“It was awesome, man,” Dore said. “I mean, big shoutout to them. That’s pretty amazing what they’re doing.”

Switch out a pronoun or two, and Dore easily could have been talking about Kernels right-hander Jose Berrios, who limited the Cougars to two hits in 7⅓ innings.

Dore notched the first of those, a single to right field with one out in the sixth, and Dan Vogelbach had the other.

Had designated hitter Rock Shoulders not drilled Berrios on his throwing elbow with a liner in the eighth, the Cougars (47-68 overall, 17-30 second half) might have saluted Berrios further.

“He just had really great command with his fastball, you know. He kept us off-balance. He was going in and out,

kind of putting it where he wanted it,” Dore said. “When a pitcher is able to command his fastball, you know, that makes his other stuff even better.”

Western Division-leading Cedar Rapids (71-46, 31-17) created more than enough breathing room for Berrios with a fourrun fourth inning that opened with a throwing error by third baseDan Vogelbach m a n J e i m e r Candelario.

The Kernels struck for each of their runs against loser Felix Pena with two outs. Two additional errors followed in the inning, which also included a two-base wild pitch that allowed Kernels second baseman Jorge Polanco to score what ultimately held up as the winning run.

West doubled on the second round to show five hearts, four diamonds and extra values. (To bid three diamonds would have guaranteed a five-card suit.)

North raised spades to indicate a promising hand, but South had nothing to spare, and those three low hearts were a warning bell.

Under the heart ace, East signals with his 10, starting a high-low (echo) with a doubleton.

Now West can see four defensive tricks via the spade ace and three top hearts, but where is the fifth winner?

Next, West should consider the high-card points. After checking the dummy and his hand, he sees there are only 11 points missing. South must have most or all of them for his advance at the two-level, which I think should be forcing by an unpassed hand. If East and West cannot get another side-suit trick, they must collect a second trump trick.

West should cash the heart king to confirm East’s doubleton, then shift to his singleton club.

South will win in his hand and play a trump, but West takes the trick and continues with his heart two, the lowest card being a suit-preference signal. East ruffs and returns a club, which West ruffs for down one.
