Fun Fest fireworks show gets a green light Event will take place at a new location

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The fireworks show at the Maple Park Fun Fest will be at a new location, A&P Grains in Maple Park.

Earlier this week, organizers feared that the display would be canceled because the site used in previous years had become unavailable.

But a solution emerged at a recent meeting of the festival’s committee. Two members of the committee – Melissa Brady and Brittany Altepeter – work for A&P, and that site emerged as a possibility.

A&P is at 410 S. County Line Road, Maple Park. The festival will be from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, mostly on Main Street in the village. The fireworks show is slated for Sept. 1.

Brady is the daughter of David Altepeter, the president of A&P, and Brittany Altepeter is his niece.

After working out the logistics – Roger Kahl, who runs the fireworks show, talked with the village’s fire department – the show was a go again.

That was a relief to Beth Miller, who does marketing

and public relations for the festival.

“I was completely worried,” Miller said. “It seemed like we were trying location after location, and everything got shot down.”

The previous location, was at a partially developed subdivision, Squire’s Crossing, but Miller said because some of the properties are being sold, that area could not be used for fireworks.

Brady said she asked her father if their land would be available. Brady said her father said room could be found.

Brady said it was especially important because additional money was raised, and the fireworks show is to be larger than usual.

“We’re more than happy to help out,” Brady said.

Do blondes have more fun? Maybe squirrels GOOD NATURED Pam Otto OK everybody, think fast: Who or what, comes to mind when you hear the word blonde? Certain movie stars?

Various jokes? The debate about who it is that has more fun?

How about ... squirrels?

Way back in April, I received an email from Susan Cira of St. Charles. She described a new visitor to her yard, one with a tail she described as “the most beautiful blonde.” Thing was though, it didn’t match the rest of the gray squirrel’s body.

“It looked like he bought it at a garage sale,” she noted.

A little bit of Googling and a couple of phone calls later, we learned that this squirrel’s odd, blonde coloration, while not unheard of, was definitely unusual – more so than the black squirrels that pop up occasionally around the Tri-Cities.

It all comes down to pigmentation and the hereditary units that control them – the genes.

If you only pay squirrels a passing glance, it would seem that they all look pretty much alike. The gray ones, Sciurus carolinensis, are medium-gray tinged with just a bit of white and reddish brown; their bellies are white and their eyes are dark. (The other guys, frequently called red squirrels, are Sciurus niger, the fox squirrels. They, too, have gray on their bodies but their “overcoat,” tail and belly are reddish orange. At two-plus pounds, they’re also twice as heavy as their cousins, the grays.)

Neither bleach nor peroxide nor too much sun; genetic variation produced the blonde tail on this gray squirrel, which frequents a yard in far west St. Charles.

If you start to look a little more closely, you’ll notice that each squirrel has its own individual characteristics. A belly that’s light tan instead of white. More brown on the face. Less red on the feet.

Before long you’ll realize that, just like snowflakes (and people, and most other natural objects), no two squirrels are exactly alike.

These color variations, which are even more pronounced when you start comparing squirrels from different regions, are the result of a pigment called melanin.

A squirrel’s unique genetic makeup controls the amount of pigment as well as the type – eumelanin (which produces black and brown tones in the fur) and phaeomelanin (which produces reds and yellows).

Other gene sequences control where these pigments occur. That’s how we can end up with squirrels that are primarily gray, but have a blonde tail.

Or ... a squirrel that is primarily gray, with a characteristically gray and brown tail that happens to have a small patch of blonde fur on it.

Yep, you guessed it, Susan Cira emailed again, just the other day, with an update to her tale of the squirrel with the blonde tail. The squirrel appears to have a progeny, a youngster whose genetic makeup, like that of dear old dad, or mom, called for an abundance of eumelanin. But instead of an entirely blonde tail, this new young guy or gal has it in just one spot.

Even though these

markings are quite obvious, and make it easy for Susan to see just who’s eating her birdseed, the odd coloration doesn’t appear to help or hamper either squirrel in any way.

“The other squirrels don’t seem to notice the difference,” she said in her email.

Given that Blondie No. 1 survived to adulthood, it would seem that the nonconformity matters little to predators. Like most of our common wildlife, squirrels typically have a high mortality rate – anywhere from 70 percent to 85 percent do not make it through their first year. Yet No. 1 still is hanging in there, defying the odds. With its bright eyes and bushy, gold-hued tail, this handsome squirrel may be

proof that blondes do indeed have more fun.

Hultgren tours Radco’s new facility

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, toured Radco’s new corporate headquarters Friday in Batavia, he marveled at the fact the company has become a global leader in the manufacturing of specialty fluids and lubricants for the military, industrial/energy and solar markets.

“It is really impressive,” Hultgren told Radco CEO Michael Damiani. “You are going against companies like Dow Chemical.”

Earlier this year, Radco Industries moved its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility into a vacant 28,000-square-foot facility at 700 Kingsland Drive in Batavia.

The company’s manufacturing plant had been in LaFox since 1977.

The Batavia facility will manufacture heat transfer and solar products. The company’s LaFox facilities are approved for military manufacturing and will continue to produce military products.

Damiani said the facility

will accommodate the company’s growing business, which extends across six continents.

Hultgren, who sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, was particularly interested in what Radco is doing in the solar market.

“This is encouraging to me, to be less dependent on foreign oil,” Hultgren said.

Damiani also voiced his concerns to Hultgren about automatic spending cuts that have happened in the military because of the sequester. He said 50 percent of Radco’s business right now is in the military.

“It would affect our business 25 to 30 percent,” Damiani said. “We plan to overcome the sequester issues by adding new products and increasing our market share.”

Hultgren said he opposed the sequester from the beginning.

“It is a horrible way to budget,” he said. “It is indiscriminate. My hope is that we have a much more thoughtful approach. We can’t spend more than we take in.”

ST. CHARLES – A company specializing in mosquito control products has closed the deal on its new headquarters at an office building on the city’s east side.

Earlier this week, a corporation associated with The Clarke Group filed documents with Kane County indicating it was the new owner of the office building at 675 Sidwell Court, located near the intersection of South Tyler Road and Wallace Avenue, south of Route 64, in St. Charles.

According to the county property documents, the corporation, New Campus LLC, paid

$2.35 million for the property, which was sold by mapping software creator, The Sidwell Company.

The deal cements the publicly discussed move of The Clarke Group’s headquarters from Roselle to St. Charles.

The company secured financial incentives worth $275,000 from the city of St. Charles to bring their headquarters to the city.

Clarke indicated it was deciding between relocating to either St. Charles or Ames, Iowa.

Clark company representatives told St. Charles city officials the headquarters would bring 71 jobs to the city with average salaries around $80,000, and 15 additional jobs paying

Harry was a great father to his five children, had a love for travel and took his family on many wonderful family vacations.

Harry suffered from three strokes in October 2013 and spent the remainder of his time at The Tillers where family members still had very special times with him, each and every day.

Harry is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Kathy (Robin) Lawson, Larry (Sue) Neely, Mark (Dede) Neely, Cindy (Jeff) Swanson and Kelly (Jack) Moorehead; eight grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

ST. CHARLES – Roland Eric Ginn, 65, of St. Charles, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born Jan. 2, 1948, in Montreal, the son of Clarence and Thelma (Taylor) Ginn.

Eric grew up in Montreal and graduated from Sir George Williams University in Montreal.

He received his master’s degree in business administration from University of Chicago. It was there that he met Sharon (Hilgenberg), with whom he shared 21 wonderful years of marriage. Eric worked in computer software sales and later owned and operated six Verlo Mattress stores in the Chicagoland area.

He enjoyed playing cribbage and golfing with friends whenever he could and being outside working in the yard. He also was a big NASCAR fan. Eric was just a kid at heart and his greatest enjoyment in life was joking around and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; daughter, Marissa Ginn of Montreal; and sisters, Trudy (Michael) Tritt of Montreal and Heather Bevilacqua of Boston.

A memorial service for Eric will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road, Batavia, with Pastor Ron Weidler officiating.

Burial will be private.

Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013. She was born April 3, 1931, the daughter of Sidney Burt and Eleanor Jane (Crishop) Fosmer, in Oak Park.

She lived most of her life in Oak Park, and later moved to Geneva and then to Pekin.

Daphne enjoyed travel and was an accomplished artist.

She traveled to Alaska, China (twice), Europe (several times) and Hawaii (many times). She studied fine arts at Rosary College (now known as Dominican University) in River Forest, and was awarded a BFA degree in 1978.

She enrolled in graduate school at Northern Illinois University and earned an MFA degree in 1986. She later taught fine arts at Oak Park-River Forest High School and Rosary College.

Although she created pieces in many different media, her greatest accomplishments came in jewelry and basket making. She was an active member of the Fox Valley Basket Weavers Guild.

She left a legacy of many beautiful objects that her family and friends will enjoy as they remember her.

Before starting her education, Daphne was active in the League of Women Voters and was a literacy volunteer in Project Head Start.

She is survived by her three children, Ralph T. (Sandra Thomas) Mooney of St. Charles, Thomas B. (Marlee) Mooney of West Hartford, Conn., and Cory Ann (Richard) McCoy of Pekin. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Courtney (Joshua) Gettig, Christopher (Elizabeth) Mooney, Emilee (James) Scott, Caroline Mooney, Patrick (Katie) McCoy, Maren (Nathan Dozard) McCoy; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Lillian and Emily Gettig, Evelyn and Eleanor Mooney, Vivian Scott and Walter and Lola Dozard; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Mooney, in 2006; her parents, her sisters, Mary Hall and Martha Wells Fulton; and her brothers, Alfred Fosmer and John (Jack) Fosmer.

St. Peter Barn Sale prep shifts into high gear

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Even though the St. Peter Barn Sale is a month away, preparations for the mega shopping experience are reaching a feverish pitch, organizers say.

The sale is Sept. 14 and 15 at the Kane County Fairgrounds, but the last day to drop things off is Aug. 17 at the parish, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva, in the old bus barn, said Lisa O’Leary-Volk, a volunteer.

“It’s at the north end of the parking lot,” O’LearyVolk said. “It’s open all the time, 24/7. The donation center will be closed after that because we need time to get things sorted, and we don’t work Labor Day weekend.”

O’Leary-Volk said trucks still will pick up large, heavy items such as furniture, through Aug. 24.

“Anything large, if you can’t get it to us, we will pick it up,” O’Leary-Volk said.

The Barn Sale, which will be held at the fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, involves the sale of thousands of donated items – from collectibles to linens, seasonal decorations to antiques, books, music, glassware and electronics, among others.

During the year, 400 to 500 volunteers work prepare for the two-day event that attracts about 9,000 to 10,000 people each year over the two days, O’Leary-Volk said.

“The quality and volume is phenomenal,” O’LearyVolk said of the donated items available for sale. “At least eight to nine semitrailers full. And the quality – I think people held back for a while with moves and downsizing, but now people are letting go.”

Typically, the sale raises $100,000 for the church, which uses the money to pay down its debt. The fundraiser is passed among the local Catholic parishes for 10-year periods.

O’Leary-Volk said this sale is the seventh in the church’s second decade of running it to finish paying off a building expansion.

The event also serves as a way to aid the community, providing a chance to buy new or gently used items at reduced prices, she said.

The Mayorga siblings, twins Matthew and Michael, 19, and Mandy Mayorga 24, all of Geneva, are the cochairs for the project this year.

Matthew Mayorga said the trio work on the sale Thursdays and Saturdays for eight to 10 hours.

And all three grew up with the sale seven years ago, through their parents, also long-time volunteers.

“After seeing what happens – seeing a family that can get their first bikes for their kids and to see their faces – that’s why I’m doing it,” Matthew Mayorga said.

Verified and validated St. Charles Fire Department to receive accreditation status Thursday

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Fire Department is expected to soon reach an achievement that fewer than 200 of the country’s approximately 49,000 fire departments have earned: accreditation.

“It puts us in a pretty elite group,” Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

Administered by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, accreditation is a comprehensive self-assessment and evaluation of all the department’s internal processes and procedures, including such behind-the-scenes areas as human resources and finance. Agencies undergoing accreditation examine internal performance and past, current and future service levels, and they compare them to industry’s best practices.

The St. Charles Fire Department divvied up the responsibilities. Assistant Chief Kevin Christensen oversaw training and specialty teams; Battalion Chief Marty Friel handled emergency medical services and fire investigations; Battalion Chief Scott Swanson spearheaded fire suppression operations and communications; and senior administrative assistant Nonda Anderson ran a lot of statistical reports and prepared electronic documents for presentations.

“It was a lot of work for everybody grabbing the information,” said Christensen, who also served as a proofreader.

Because everything was verified and validated by an out-of-state site team, the accreditation process also was a third-party evaluation that shows “we here are committed to excellence,” Schelstreet said.

The St. Charles Fire Department is set to receive accreditation status Thursday in Chicago, but by no means does the milestone signify an end.

Accreditation, Schelstreet said, is a continual improvement process, not a project.

Obtaining accreditation status is the culmination of a yearslong process that, those involved said, included a lot of weekends and late nights and training about the accreditation process, even before the fire department became an ap-

plicant agency.

“You want to go into this with your eyes wide open,” said Schelstreet, noting his department sought help from the Geneva Fire Department.

The Geneva Fire Department earned accreditation in 2001 and has gone through the renewal process twice, Chief Steve Olson said. He said the process affects all facets of the

department’s operation.

“It keeps you on your toes,” he said. “It’s easy to slack off.

It’s better that we’re on top of it, so when residents say, ‘Why do you do this?’ we can give very thorough and accurate answers because we’ve been looking at that.”

As a peer assessor, Olson has experience participating on teams that evaluate fire departments seeking accreditation. The teams’ rule departments are inadequate far less often today than in earlier years, he said.

“We don’t even go if the team doesn’t think the department is ready,” Olson said.

A site team visited St. Charles from April 28 to May 2.

Those few days were intense, department representatives said, explaining the team interviewed them, human resources and, among others, the mayor.

Swanson said the department was confident it would pass.

“But we weren’t sure,” he said. “They really did look at

everything.”

The site team left the fire department a 40-page report detailing items to improve, Schelstreet said. Some suggestions are voluntary, he said, while others are mandatory.

During a hearing before the commission Thursday, Schelstreet said three fire department representatives will field questions about their plans to achieve the mandatory recommendations.

At this point, the commission will grant, deny or defer accreditation. Accreditation is valid for five years.

About 13 people total, including Mayor Ray Rogina, will be in Chicago to celebrate St. Charles’ anticipated success.

Rogina gave credit to both Schelstreet and former Fire Chief Patrick Mullen for the “wonderful accomplishment.”

“This is a special award signifying that the department wants to work at the highest standards possible,” Rogina said. “They worked hard to achieve this.”

A half-mile paved trail was constructed last fall, and additional improvements include

the construction of a shelter-styled “tree house” structure built amid an amphitheater setting with interpretive displays and observation areas.

Long said the park district wants to find a home for Auroraland Archers.

“We want to accommodate them,” he said. “Our archery program has been a great success. We have plenty of outdoor areas. Indoors is a little more challenging because safety is of the utmost importance.”

Auroraland Archers also faces declining membership.

Larsen blamed the decline on the park district’s decision to remove the group’s outdoor archery range and replace it with a natural grass prairie seven years ago.

“Nine years ago, we probably had 250 members,” Larsen said. “Now, we have 63. That was the beginning of the end for us.”

NORTH AURORA – The members of Auroraland Archers are worried about the club’s future as the Fox Valley Park District makes plans to tear down its building in Lippold Park because it has fallen in disrepair.

“This is our home,” said club president Karen Larsen.

“We have no other place to go.”

Fox Valley Park District operates Lippold Park, located along Route 25 just north of the park district’s Red Oak Nature Center in North Aurora. The building houses the club’s indoor archery range – which is used by about 100 people a month, including those involved in the Junior Olympic Archery Development program – and the club also holds its meetings there.

The Auroraland Archers group was formed in 1960,

and the club has the mission of promoting education in archery and providing instruction to prospective and experienced archers. According to Larsen, a structural analysis of the building revealed it needed between $150,000 and $200,000 worth of work to bring it up to code.

The park district has decided not to repair the building, and has told the club that it must vacate the building by the end of September, Larsen said.

Larsen said she has complained to the park district for the last four years about the building’s condition, but that her complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

The building’s roof started leaking this spring.

“The roof has a great big hole in it,” she said.

Music school moves to new space

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After two successful years at 206½ W. State St. in Geneva, Absolute Music Academy recently moved to become the new anchor of 611 E. State St., Geneva, filling nine suites.

Owner Jacob Fairbank of Geneva, 37, a 1994 graduate of Geneva High School plays guitar and piano and got into producing music professionally.

“It kind of just spun into a business,” Fairbank said.

“I built the studio for myself and thought it would be cool to have a school.”

The space he rented on the second floor of the Denim Loft became three classrooms and a recording studio. It worked out well, he said, but the school grew to 40 students, and he needed more space.

OPINIONS OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up: To Batavia High School senior Audrey Faulhaber and her fellow players on the school’s varsity volleyball team for caring for their community.

The players last week distributed 1,300 bags in neighborhoods throughout Batavia to collect food donations as part of the Batavia Athletes Against Hunger program. They are set to return today to pick up the bags and bring the donations to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

Faulhaber, who has volunteered at the pantry since her freshman year, said athletes have a responsibility to help others and work as a team to make a difference.

Their effort will be appreciated by many – the pantry serves more than 400 families every month to residents living within Batavia or Batavia Township.

Teenagers are often seen as troublemakers who don’t care about others. It’s refreshing to see – and share – examples that contradict that stereotype.

Kudos as well to Berkeley Finer Foods and Trader Joe’s in Batavia for providing the bags that were distributed. We hope Batavia residents return them filled to the brim.

Thumbs down: To past administrations of Kaneland School District 302 for not keeping track of the warranty for the roof at Kaneland John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove.

It is costing taxpayers significant money to repair a roof installed in the late 1990s that shouldn’t have needed repairs for 25 years: The district spent $15,760 in July 2012 for temporary fixes, and this summer a more extensive project costs an estimated $479,420.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler said it’s his understanding a 20-year warranty was issued when the roof was installed, and that would have covered a portion of the repairs – although how much is unknown without examining the document.

Board President Cheryl Krauspe has said the warranty “clearly does not exist,” and district leaders are investigating and seeking a remedy from those who should have delivered the warranty.

If it never arrived, previous administrators, as responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, should have ensured the district had the warranty. We appreciate the current administration’s honesty – and understand the frustration it has exhibited – about the situation.

District officials have and pledged to continue to keep an eye on projects – and their paperwork – for existing and future projects. We hope they follow through on that promise.

These are human beings. Securing the border will be a disincentive not

only to those who smuggle undocumented immigrants across the border, but also to those who traffic weapons and drugs.

Congressman Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, has said that the the first step with regards to immigration is to secure the border, which is exactly the right response. When Congress addresses this issue as a separate piece of legislation, lives are sure to be saved.

by Congressman Roskam on immigration reform is the one Congress adopts because, among other reasons, it appears closest to consensus. Addressing each of the issues in a deliberate, step-by-step approach, starting with securing the border, is the responsible way to push immigration reform.

Hats off to all the people in Sugar Grove who are a part of this annual event. However, I do have one complaint. The noise that nowadays is purported to be music was awful. It is loud to the point of hurting one’s ears, and it is difficult to understand what is supposedly being said. Were they speaking English? What part of louder is not better don’t they understand? Same thing with wedding receptions. Ridiculous.

It’s not an arch The River Street arch in Batavia is not an arch. It is a circle on its side, a halo, a headband, but not an arch. The St. Louis arch is an arch. The St. Charles City Council has granted seven construction extensions for the project, which would develop the west bank of the Fox River bordered by Illinois, First and Main streets in downtown St. Charles.

First Street LLC is scheduled to present a revised concept for Phase 3 at the 7 p.m.

Planning and Development Committee meeting Monday.

According to agenda documents, First Street LLC has two sets of conceptual plans: one with four four-story buildings and one with three four-story buildings.

Both sets include a parking structure; condominiums; studio units; one- and two-bedroom units; and firstfloor restaurant, retail and office space.

include the former Manor site, 1 W. Main St. That property is controlled by SMN Development.

The Historic Preservation Commission, Plan Commission and City Council will be involved in the review process, according to agenda documents.

Built in 2008 just north of Prairie Street, the structure is permitted to house a financial institution with a drive-through facility, additional commercial tenant spaces on the first floor and 16 apartments on the upper levels, according to agenda documents.

First Street LLC wants to expand the permitted uses to include offices and medical and dental clinics.

The Plan Commission has unanimously endorsed the request.

ENEVA – Cougars right-hander Tyler Skulina undoubtedly brings bulk to the parent Cubs’ organization.

A favorite son of Strongsville, Ohio, Skulina appropriately goes 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds.

“Just always been bigger than just about everybody else,” he said.

Muscle certainly helps in Skulina’s line of work, but hefty brain power often can be more valuable. In his first few weeks of professional ball since the Cubs drafted him in the fourth round in June, Skulina knows getting a jump on the head games will go a long way.

“People are going to get on. You’ve got to put it behind you,” Skulina said.

“You can’t get frustrated with things you can’t control. What I’ve learned a lot is just control. You can’t control the umpire, what happens behind you –

errors, hits, whatever it is.”

Friday’s home start against Burlington afforded Skulina the opportunity to heed his own advice while also looking inward.

The Bees scored two runs – one earned – in the second inning after a Skulina throwing error on a Zach Wright sacrifice bunt. Limited to a strict pitch count as he opens his career, Skulina allowed four hits and three runs in 2⅓ innings, scattering one walk and three strikeouts.

Skulina shined for two seasons at Kent State, including a 2012 season in which he went 11-3 with a 3.77 ERA and helped the Golden Flashes to the first College World Series berth in school history.

He officially began his college career at Virginia, but soon transferred upon finding the school wasn’t the right fit. He pitched during fall exhibition play.

Sight seen And smelled. With the Cougars’ Jeimer Candelario batting with one out in the bottom of the ninth, a skunk scurried onto the field, waddling from the first-base side to the center-field wall. Three Cougars employees jogged out to corner the rodent, which was escorted off the field when the center field gate opened. Unofficially, it was a four-minute skunk delay.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a skunk [disrupt a game],” said Cougars manager Mark Johnson, a former major league catcher. “I’ve seen a lot of other things.”

Cubs brass will be excited because Catcher Carlos Escobar delivered each of his four RBIs with two outs and extended his hitting streak to five games.

“It’s a work in progress and I got away from my approach there late, but it’s feeling better,” Escobar said.

Although he had gone 26-0 in his career at Walsh Jesuit outside Cleveland, honing a fastball that touched the mid-90s, Skulina was up front with scouts that he sought college experience before a pro contract.

“And they’re like, ‘You know what, that’s fine. Just happy you told me that,’ ” Skulina said. “Because a lot of guys don’t tell the scouts that, and then when they did pick them, they’re like, ‘Hey, what the [heck]?’ But yeah, they were perfectly fine with that.”

Teammates have picked up on Skulina’s mellow nature quickly, namely Rob Zastryzny. A Missouri left-hander and second-round pick, Zastryzny “really clicked”

with Skulina during their few weeks together at Short-A Boise last month.

“We’d sit together on the bus, so we became pretty good friends that way,” Zastryzny said. “He’s a really good dude.”

Outfielder Jose Dore, who was promoted in tandem with Skulina last month, also gave favorable reviews after Skulina compiled a 1.20 ERA over 15 innings and eight appearances in Boise.

“He’s a great pitcher, great guy,” Dore said. “I think he’ll do real well.”

For Skulina, the thinking’s the thing. He admittedly fought overanxiety during his Midwest League debut Sunday, when he spaced three hits, three runs, two walks and one strikeout in two innings at Clinton.

“I was just kind of rushing through it instead of just taking my time,” Skulina said. “I mean, it was good to get that first one out of the way.”

GENEVA – Friday brought Country Music Night to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark before, during and after the Cougars’ 6-5, 10-inning loss to Burlington.

If not dueling fiddles, the promotion’s muse spurred slight clubhouse discord.

“I’m not a huge country guy,” second baseman Giuseppe Pappacio said. “Really, I’m not.”

Here’s a look, y’all: • “I Fall To Pieces” by Patsy Cline Defiance was undoubtedly the initial reaction when home plate umpire Nick Garvey ruled Bees first baseman Wade Hinkle safe on a 10th-inning sacrifice fly that provided the final margin.

With one out and the bases loaded, Riley Good lofted a fly ball to Cougars left fielder Reggie Golden, who made the catch and threw home well ahead of Hinkle.

Cougars catcher Carlos Escobar was unable to handle the throw, but still tagged Hinkle, who appeared to slide past home plate.

Chevy Clarke, waiting on deck for the Bees, implored Hinkle to touch home, adding to the argument for Kane County (47-65, 17-29).

“I mean, my whole thing is, if he goes back of the plate and I tag him before he touches the plate, that’s just baseball,”

Escobar said. “I mean, you’re out.”

• “Hello Walls” by Faron Young The Cougars’ Jose Dore leapt above the right-field wall to pull Sherman Johnson’s would-be two-run homer back into the park to end the top of the second.

Burlington already had capitalized on a throwing error by starter Tyler Skulina – a fourth-round draft pick of the parent Cubs in June – to grab a 2-1 lead earlier in the inning.

“Unbelievable, huh?” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “That was freaking awesome. I didn’t think he had a chance on it. He made an incredible catch. That was definitely a web gem.”

• “Easy” by Sheryl Crow Left-hander Rob Zastryzny, a second-round draft pick from Missouri, kept the Cougars close in his first outing since his promotion from Short-A Boise this week.

His three innings of scoreless relief included two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

“Felt good to be back on the field,” Zastryzny said, “especially for a new team so close to Wrigley, you know.”

• “Workin’ Man Blues” by Merle Haggard Center fielder Albert Almora professed to stay upbeat despite a bone bruise in his right groin that will keep him on the disabled list past the initial 7-day diagnosis.

Almora felt a tweak in his groin during Sunday’s game at Clinton and left in the fourth inning. His DL stint began retroactive to Monday.

“Things have changed, so I’ll just have to go with the flow and take it day-by-day,” Almora said.

“There’s nothing much I can do. Just rest.”

• “Tennessee Waltz” by Patti Page The Tennessee Smokies, the Cubs’ Double-A affiliate in Knoxville, Tenn., hosted Jazz Night on Friday. Given Geneva’s proximity to Chicago, might the melodious promotions have been flipped around?

Mobile Murzinski takes aim at swan song

Golf provided a constant throughout Murzinski’s career as a corporate industrial sales executive. In the past several years, however, his scores haven’t necessarily followed.

“My game has steadily gone down,” Murzinski said, “but it’s got a resurgence now.”

Murzinski faces Shawn Furrie in a B-flight semifinal in the St. Charles Men’s Tournament this morning at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

What he calls his final tourney appearance – Murzinski and wife Joyce plan to relocate full-time to North Carolina soon – comes after about a quarter century of dabbling at each flighted level.

He’s won some and been blown out in some, but relished in playing his home course throughout.

Murzinski won the F-flight title in 2010, the year of his retirement. The tournament had a few more participants then.

Walking the course each time keeps Murzinski, 67, spry, while adding to his energy. He has needed it while interviewing realtors this week.

He and his wife have two grown daughters and already spend about half the year in North Carolina, where one daughter lives. The family

landed in St. Charles in 1987 and took root there when Murzinski went to work for a private company.

The Daly show: Defending champion Matt Daly would seem due for a middle-ground match. Last weekend’s victories were about as polar as it gets – 9 and 7 against Eliot Kaufman and 1-up against Jon Woods in a 20-hole epic.

Never short on swagger, Daly keeps grinning and re-

lying on consistency to pull him through, no matter the circumstances.

“Just trying to play solid golf. Just trying to hit it in the center of the club face every time and roll the rock,” he said of his success driving and putting. “You’ve got to roll the rock in match play, and confidence is everything. And when you get up, you’ve got to stay up, and you can’t compound mistakes. You hit it out, you’ve got to take your medicine.”

Caddy counsel: First-time tournament participant Sean Lenchner used the past few weeks as a tune-up for his upcoming season at Elmhurst College, which opens its fall schedule Sept. 3.

The St. Charles East alumnus happily reached out to some old pals in the process.

Lenchner recruited reigning Chronicle Boys Golfer of the Year Dan Shepherd – a recent St. Charles North graduate – to caddy his qualifying round two weekends ago. Last weekend, Lenchner’s former high school teammate, East junior Keone Derain, manned the bag for two rounds in the championship flight when the Indiana-bound Shepherd had to arrive early to campus.

“Dan helped me with a bunch of putts, … so I was kind of mad I lost him, but Keone helped me out, so it was fun,” Lenchner said.

“He’s going to be a good golfer … so I called him on out.”

How did this come about?

How comfortable are you coaching the wide receiver position?

Pretty [comfortable]. I learned a lot while I was at North Central. My wide receiver coach, Brad Spencer, taught me everything I know.

I learned everything from him and it’s much easier relaying it to the high school level than college level. You don’t have to go so in-depth because you can only teach them so much and learn so much before it becomes ineffective because you’re throwing so much at them.

Did you enjoy the transition [from running back to wide receiver] at North Central?

It was tough because I didn’t really play wide receiver in high school, and I had phenomenal guys at wide receiver when I was in high school. … I played running

Weekend Chit-chat with BATAVIA GRADUATE BAI KABBA back my entire life, so I can’t say my hands were anything special. It was tough … learning the concept of looking the ball into the hands and moreso learning [all the fundamentals] of the position.

Did you have to do a big sell job with coach Piron to get on board or was he right away enthused about it?

I helped out at camp before. It was more I had the time and availability and I was sort of looking for something to really do this summer. I always help out at camp and it just so happened

this summer there was the vacancy there and I was just helping out over the summer, and I plan to continue to help out with the varsity and sophomores in the fall, just helping out anywhere I can basically.

Is it tough to find that coach’s voice with still being so young?

Actually, it works out in my favor in a sense. I know a lot of guys because I went to school with their older brothers or I’ve always known them when I was in high school, they were kids I was doing the Junior Bulldog camp with, playing around with them, so they got to see me play in high school, watch my track career a little, know about stuff I would do at North Central when I played football, so it makes it a little bit easier in the sense that I’m not a new person coming in. I’ve been in Batavia and been around them.

So what’s the sneak peek

of the wide receiver corps this fall, with having to replace (Zach) Strittmatter? … It’s going to different.

The ball is going to be spread around. Everyone has been stepping up. It’s been really nice. We have so many offensive weapons. We have Michael Moffatt returning and Rourke Mullins returning and Jordan Zwart. … There’s really no one guy that’s going to be what Strittmatter was.

We don’t have a Strittmatter or a Cole Gardner anymore, haven’t had him for two years, so it’s going to be spreading the ball around and have guys making plays.

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens.

So your arrival makes it, what, about 50 North Central guys on the Batavia coaching staff now?

I don’t know – me, coach Gaspari, coach Piron, coach Holm. It might be more. I could be missing some guys, but it’s a good amount of us, that’s for sure.

lsrodulski@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Mixed emotions flooded Northern Illinois senior cornerback Sean Evans’ mind when he saw the Orange Bowl banner raised at Huskie Stadium before April’s spring game.

“It’s bittersweet,” Evans said. “It showed us that we set a new standard to build on, but it kind of reiterates to me that we didn’t get it done.”

Although it might be disappointing, the banner serves as motivation to improve upon last season’s tough ending.

But it does even more than that.

It’s a reminder of how much Evans, his teammates and those who came before him have built a winning tradition in DeKalb.

Their contributions are a big reason why the new $3.3 million video board was built at Huskie Stadium, and why the $9.5 million Chessick Practice Center soon will be part of the tradition, as well.

The ways in which these new additions will do that are yet to be seen, but the players believe the video board is a big step toward improving gameday atmospheres at Huskie Stadium.

Last season, average home attendance was 15,660 a game.

The stadium’s capacity is 24,000, and junior receiver Tommylee Lewis said there still can be improvement, which he thinks will come from the board.

“It’s going to be a big benefit,” Lewis said. “I’m sure it’s going to crank the crowd up and keep everything exciting.

It’ll boost the momentum for us.”

The players can’t wait for construction of the Chessick

Center to be complete. It’s projected to be finished in the fall, just in time for the chill of cold-weather practices to be lessened.

NIU has many players from gulf-coast states who have a tough time getting acclimated to the weather.

For them, the multi-million dollar facility becomes almost priceless.

“The last four years of spring ball, we’ve been outside in the cold weather. It’s been 25 degrees,” said Evans, a Florida native. “It feels like it’s going to help NIU and help the program. It’s great watching it get built up every day. I can’t wait to use it.”

Not only does it satisfy the current players, but it’s a selling point for future recruits.

Along with the title of the first Mid-American Conference team to play in a BCS bowl, the school now has improved facilities to show for it.

The change is even more tangible for seniors like Volk.

When he came to visit, the Yordon Center had just recently been finished. When he sees how far the program has come in such a short time, he sees it as an indication of things to come.

“Seeing that facility and how they take care of it, and how we’ve got one of the best weight rooms in the country, it’s huge,” Volk said of the Yordon Center. “Knowing that NIU’s continuing to get better and better every year, it’s just great for NIU and I’m really proud of it.”

I actually have one more semester at North Central to run track (in the spring), so I won’t have school in the fall, so I have time in my schedule and one of the other coaches who coached the wide receivers when I was there (Bill Kettering) is retiring. ... I told [Batavia coach Dennis Piron] I have time and I’m available and I’d love to coach those guys. A lot of the guys on the

team are brothers of guys I went to school with so I already know them, so it’s just a lot of fun.

Not long removed from his days as a Batavia football standout, Bai Kabba is back on the Bulldogs’ sideline this fall as a first-year assistant coach. Kabba was a standout running back at Batavia but will coach receivers, the position he played at North Central College, where he also runs track and field.

It didn’t really sink in until I looked down at the Bears’ pregame warmups from the press box in Carolina’s Bank of America Stadium that with a new coaching staff in place for the first time in 10 seasons in Chicago, every single step this team is taking is new and a work in progress. The pregame stretching routine was all new, in Carolina, and just about everything else in the pregame was new as well. With Marc Trestman’s attention to detail, it all matters and these early preseason games will be more valuable to the team than usual.

It appeared the decision for Julius Peppers not to dress in Carolina might have been a late reaction to his pregame warm up in shorts and gym shoes. The list of players who would not dress did not include Peppers or Brandon Marshall, who also sat out.

Other than the greeting for Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith, the loudest cheer from Panthers fans in pregame introductions went to former Bears tight end Greg Olsen.

Glass half empty in Carolina CHARLOTTE, N.C. – First the good news. Marc Trestman, Jay Cutler and Josh McCown all agreed leading up to the first preseason game in Carolina that the most important thing they needed to do was get the calls in from the sideline and called in the huddle correctly, get everybody lined up in the right spot and get the ball snapped in rhythm.

Mission accomplished. The Bears had no problems running Trestman’s offense and that is significant for a first preseason game with a new coaching staff in the Bears’ 2417 loss Friday to Carolina.

Unfortunately, that’s where the good news stopped as the Bears didn’t execute the offense very well, they failed to take care of the football, turning it over four times in the first three quarters, and the defense was mediocre at best.

What was disconcerting was seeing J’Marcus Webb beaten badly on an outside speed rush from Charles Johnson and then get beaten even worse on the same play when he tried to push Johnson past Cutler. He allowed Johnson to make an inside move under his outstretched arms to sack Cutler for a six-yard loss.

We might have been given a hint as to where the offensive line is headed when the second unit came on for the next

If Slauson, who has had minimal reps at the position in practice, can indeed be the No. 2 center, that could allow the Bears to cut Edwin Williams loose and keep both Britton and Jonathan Scott on the final roster to back up Jermon Bushrod and continue to push Webb, assuming he keeps the right tackle job and a roster spot.

One bright spot was rookie seventh-round draft choice Marquess Wilson, who helped his case for a spot on the team with a 58-yard catch and run on a toss from Matt Blanchard and great acceleration after the catch.

At the end of the night, what we learned more than anything about the Bears is there is a lot more work to do before they’re ready to try the real thing.

SPORTS NEIGHBORS BULLETIN BOARD Waubonsee fall ball league set SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College will be hosting a fall baseball league for high school players who are not participating in any fall high school sports. This IHSA approved-league is the area’s longest running and most economical fall league.

More than 2,000 players have participated throughout the past 28 years with hundreds

going on to compete at the collegiate level.

The league is scheduled to run from Aug. 29 through the end of September. Games will be played on every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of September beginning at 4 p.m. each day.

All games will be played on Waubonsee Community College’s baseball diamond in Sugar Grove and all players signed up are guaranteed

playing time.

Each of the eight game days will provide players the opportunity to use Waubonsee’s outdoor hitting facility that features two artificial turf batting cages and multiple hitting stations. Individuals interested in playing should attend an organizational meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 on the Sugar Grove campus.

The meeting will take place in Room 219 of Erickson Hall,

Waubonsee’s gymnasium, with a $60 fee due at that time.

St. Charles swim team tryouts The St. Charles swim team will be having tryouts Monday through Wednesday for the competitive and noncompetitive teams for the 2013-2014 short course season.

The season begins Sept. 9 and depending on your swimmers ability they will finish in February or March.

Tryouts are free and will take place at the Norris Rec Center (1050 Dunham Road, St Charles, IL 60174). Swimmers will participate in a practice on their scheduled day of tryouts, swimmers need to bring their suit, goggles, cap (if needed) and towel.

Tryout dates: • Monday – swimmers 10 and under: 5 to 6:30 p.m.

• Tuesday – swimmers 11 and 12: 5 to 6:30 p.m.

• Wednesday – swimmers 13 and over: 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Families are asked to show up 10 minutes before the start of tryouts to fill out any necessary paper work. All swimmers will be participating in the entire tryout.

To try out for the St. Charles swim team, swimmers must be able swim all four of the competitive strokes legal and successfully complete the tryout practice.

The minimum requirement to try out for the SCST noncompetitive teams, swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke without stopping and be able to dive into deep water.

Swimmers will find out where they best fit for their development within the St. Charles swim team program the day of tryouts. Before the registration deadline of Aug. 23, the St. Charles swim team will hold an infor-

mational meeting Thursday to help families with any questions you might have.

Tryouts will take place today at Kaneland for the 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U age groups.

Also today, tryouts will take place at Frontier Park in Naperville for 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U age groups. Check-in for 12U and 14U will have a 4:30 p.m. check-in and 5 p.m. start time, and a 6:30 p.m. check-in with a 7 p.m. start time for 16U and 18U. Tryouts will take place Sunday at Batavia for 16U and 18U (8:30 a.m. check-in, 9 a.m. start time) and 12U and 14U (12:30 p.m. check-in, 1 p.m. start time).

Registration is open for the 2013-14 Fox Valley Hawks high school hockey season.

Players who attend St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia, Geneva or Kaneland are eligible to play.

The program will introduce a new hockey director and head coach in Nick Falzone, who brings experience from the high school and Central States levels.

Conditioning sessions will be from 6 to 7:20 p.m. on Aug. 19, 21 and 22 at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva. Evaluations will be conducted from 6 to 7:20 p.m. on Aug. 26, 28 and 29.

Players are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. A $25 fee applies to each conditioning session, while evaluations cost $75, due at the first session.

Evaluations will be applied to fall fees and are non-refundable.

Embracing age, letting go in the land of Aloha Though I enjoyed scuba diving the last time I tried it 19 years ago, when my son and I went on a dive (his first) during our family’s trip to Hawaii last week (we tagged along on Todd’s work trip to Honolulu), I couldn’t get my ear pressure right.

My face mask didn’t seal properly, either, so salt water got into my nose and stung my eyes. So annoying. And this time I didn’t feel like complying with the instructor’s “mind over matter” lecture and trust that the little bit o’ air I was getting through my regulator would be enough. Whatever. I guess I just like my deep yoga

Or, perhaps I’m just showing my age.

Yes, I’ve finally arrived at that point in my life where I really don’t worry too much about what other people might think. I’ve got nothing to prove. So what if I’m a scuba-flunkie?

If I’ve learned nothing else during my time on this planet, at least I’ve learned that if I wanna take a deep breath, by golly, I’m gonna take one.

A nice, big, fat, sweet one, thank you very much.

So, when a voice in my head told me to not waste any more of Noah’s time with our instructor I happily bailed, waved a hearty good-bye to my firstborn, released the anchor rope we were both tethered to (no metaphors here, of course), ascended to the boat, shed that cumbersome equipment, freed myself from that god-awful wetsuit (ahhhh!) and simply snorkeled, instead.

And, oh, how I love to snorkel!

I encountered several schools of tropical, brightly colored fish of every imaginable stripe; swam alongside a half-dozen regal, mellow sea turtles (my new favorite creatures); and even spotted my son scuba-diving several feet below me.

(He had a ball. Says he even saw a shark. No idea what kind, but I guess it wasn’t the hungry kind!) But I was perfectly happy where I was, mere inches from the surface, and I’m not afraid to own it.

Hydrangeas mean summer If roses are Shakespearean drama, love and wars won and lost, then hydrangeas are salty sea air, sunburned shoulders, and sand in your shoes.

They’re bicycles with wicker baskets leaning carelessly up against a picket fence, beach towels hung out to dry in the late afternoon, and double scoops of ice cream, hand-dipped and dripping down the cone.

Hydrangeas are summer.

And whether your yard is full sun or full shade, and you have acres to plant or just a wall to climb, one of these hydrangeas is perfect for you.

For our purposes, we’ll focus on a few of those most commonly grown in our region. Because none of us should miss out on summer.

• Hydrangea macrophylla.

The most popular among home gardeners, for many of us, these “mopheads” are the charming old-fashioned hydrangeas that come readily to mind. With large, showy, ball-shaped flowers in shades of pink and blue (and sometimes white) these shrubs are

LEARNING TO GROW Sarah Marcheschi a lovely addition to mixed borders, and outstanding when used as a hedge. And if you’re the type whose daydreams involve gray shingled cottages on Cape Cod, you need look no further.

Be warned though – many varieties of hydrangea macrophylla will require protection to survive our Zone 5 winters.

Generally they prefer sun in the morning and some afternoon shade, and like all hydrangeas, plenty of water.

Only prune when absolutely necessary, and do so immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year’s buds. Hydrangea macrophylla is sensitive to soil pH, which means the acidity of the soil and availability of aluminum will influence flower color.

So, if you simply can’t abide the sight of pink blooms on the otherwise perfect row lining your foundation, adding a bit of soil sulfur should give them a nudge in the right direction.

Conversely, if it’s pink flowers you’re after, amending the soil with a little lime might do the trick.

• Hydrangea aborescens. Similar in appearance to the mopheads, with their often huge, white, snowball-shaped flowers, Hydrangea aborescens can be grown successfully in a cold climate, (hardy to Zone 3!) and is one of the only hydrangeas native to the United States.

These reliable bloomers are a fantastic choice for partly shaded areas of the mixed border, or for massing together in a woodland or native garden.

Aborescens blooms on the current season’s growth, so pruning them in late winter or early spring by cutting stems back to one or two feet will encourage a healthy shape and new growth and flowers.

• Hydrangea paniculata. Christened

on account of its flowers, which form a cone shaped panicle, Hydrangea paniculata is hardy to Zone 3 and, unlike many other hydrangeas, tolerates full sun.

The showy, pyramidal blooms start off white in midsummer turning a faint pink as the season draws to a close, and in the fall, leaves become golden with hints of purple.

Panicle hydrangeas respond well to pruning, and are in fact the only hydrangea that can be pruned into a tree form. Since blooming occurs on the current season’s growth, they can be pruned in the late winter, or early spring.

• Hydrangea quercifolia. These are commonly known as the “oakleaf” hydrangeas, owing to the resemblance the leaves bear to those of an oak tree.

Similar to Hydrangea paniculata, flowers are panicle shaped, start off white and age to a deep pink. In fall, it’s the leaves that command attention as they turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow. Oakleaf hydrangea can be grown in sun or shade, and since they bloom on “old wood” (meaning, last year’s stems) if pruning is necessary, it should be done immediately after blooming, early enough to avoid removing next summer’s

flowers.

• Hydrangea petiolaris. Yes, there is a climbing hydrangea! This woody ornamental vine may be slow to establish, but it can climb up to 50 feet at maturity, and its lateral branches will grow out several feet as well, making it a grand sight when covered in a multitude of creamy white flowers come midsummer.

Since Hydrangea petiolaris will tolerate sun or shade, it presents a nice choice for darker corners of the garden or the north side of the house.

Regardless of their flower color, hydrangea blooms are big and bold and carefree, just like this season.

Later that day, not one, but two different salespeople from two different skincare boutiques at our resort felt compelled to stop me in my tracks and save me from myself.

“You have beautiful skin,” one commented, “but you don’t get enough sleep. Look at those lines around your eyes!”

I would, if I could find my new readers. But I digress.

“Do you ever use eye cream?” The other one asked, a few hours later, after she lured me to her chair and applied her magic potion to my sunburned crows feet. (I was too tired to resist. Because, you know, I don’t get enough sleep.)

“Um, not really,” I replied,

recalling the free sample I got many years ago that I dab on my face maybe once a year, that otherwise collects dust on my bathroom windowsill.

Hope in a bottle. It’s probably expired.

“You’re killing me!” she said.

I’m killing her? I liked her, actually, and we had a good laugh, but gee, there’s nothing as strong as shame to make a girl part with her cash.

No, I did not go all weak-inthe-knees for her potions or buy her crazy-expensive stuff.

Not one drop.

Because I’m showing my age.

Besides, I’m saving up for my next snorkeling adventure.

‘Elysium’ is best sci-fi film of the year

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Matt Damon proved a long time ago that he’s good at being an action star.

Director Neill Blomkamp caught everyone off-guard a few years back with his startlingly visionary science-fiction film “District 9,” as did the lead actor in that film, Sharlto Copley, who pulled off one of the best character arc voyages to be seen in a long time.

Not much has changed in “Elysium.”

Damon’s Max is very strong as one of those man-on-a-mission characters, a good-natured wise guy with a troubled past who’s now trying to do things right, even when things for him go wrong.

Blomkamp, directing his second feature, has given us a high concept, tough-asnails, big budget tale of a future that’s gone even worse than Max’s personal situation. Copley, who wasn’t very convincing as the supposedly crazed Murdock in “The A-Team,” is excellent here as the vile, pathological and extremely dangerous sleep agent Kruger, a man who takes great joy in causing pain in others.

We’re in the year 2154. The Earth is an ecological, physical wreck. The poor somehow manage to eke by (and most everyone is poor). The supposedly lucky, slightly more comfortable members of

the populace are either worker drones, or are trying to help people cope by taking care of them, or are criminals. Max works on a dangerous production line.

His childhood girlfriend Frey (now a grown-up Alice Braga) is a nurse. There are too many criminals to get into here, but one of the more interesting ones is the tech-savvy Spider (Wagner Moura), for whom Max used to do the seedy jobs that earned him prison time and parole.

Then there are the rich. They, like Earth’s population in “Wall-E,” have gone off planet, living on the huge, treefilled, circular spaceship known as Elysium, which floats way up over Los Angeles, within clear eyesight of everyone down below, but only a 19-minute ride away. It’s a comfy habitat that’s run by a fair, if weak-willed president, but more likely ruled by efficient, cold-hearted, ambitious Defense Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster).

Aside from being the only nice place to live anymore – if you can afford it, or if you can sneak up there on one of Spider’s illegal shuttles – is the fact that it’s a place of major medical advances.

If there’s something wrong with you on Earth, you’re a goner. If you’re ill, or in some way broken on Elysium, there’s a way to heal/mend you.

The front and center plotline is that an accident doses Max with so much ra-

diation, he’ll be dead in five days, unless he gets to Elysium. Borrowing a small story piece from “Robocop” (here it’s just an exo-suit), he’s temporarily fixed, by his former boss Spider, at a great cost, involving what’s best referred to as a data heist – the stealing of information from one brain into another.

But this film is as entrenched in politics and power as it is in science fiction.

That data is some pretty special stuff, and it could cause such a rift in the way of the world – and the space station – all kinds of people from all different sides are after it.

If “District 9” had a lot going for it, Blomkamp ups the ante in a big way with “Elysium.” Usually when this many interlocking stories involving so many characters are crammed into a script, some of them invariably suffer.

Not here. Blomkamp keeps a sharp focus and spends enough time on all of them. The visuals are stunning, the philosophical ideas are intriguing, and – warning – the violence is plentiful. It’s also, so far, the best science fiction film of the year.

Cluster headaches usually come in extended episodes Dear Doctor K: I get excruciatingly painful cluster headaches.

What can I do to treat, or better yet, prevent them?

Dear Reader: Cluster headaches are rare. Only about one adult in a thousand suffers from them. But they are among the most painful of all headaches. We doctors have theories about what causes cluster headaches, but the fact is that we don’t really know. They do run in families. There is an inherited, genetic component.

A typical cluster headache begins suddenly, often waking a person from sleep. The pain is intense, sharp and penetrating.

It usually occurs behind one eye.

That eye may start weeping and become bloodshot. The eyelid may droop, and the nostril may first be stuffy and then runny. The few patients I have seen with this condition tell me that the pain may be so intense that they feel like banging their heads against a wall to distract them from the headache.

After an hour or two, the pain and other symptoms usually recede, sometimes as suddenly as they came on. But they tend to recur at the same time day after day.

Most people have episodic cluster headaches. They have one

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff or two headaches a day over two to eight weeks, alternating with headache-free stretches that may last from a few weeks to several years. That’s why they’re called “cluster” headaches: They cluster during a window of time, then go away, then come back and cluster again.

Cluster headaches are like migraine headaches in some respects. The principal difference is that migraines tend to be a frequent and recurring problem; they don’t come in clusters and then go away entirely for a very long time. Another difference is that migraines occur mainly in girls and women, whereas cluster headaches occur mainly in men.

Cluster headaches are often treated with a drug called sumatriptan (Imitrex). It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and stopping pain signals from being sent to the brain.

When given promptly by injection at the start of a headache, sumatriptan can relieve cluster headache attacks within 15 minutes.

Another effective treatment is inhaling pure oxygen. Oxygen can be administered in an emergency room or at home from a portable tank. An injection of dihydroergotamine (DHE-45) can quickly alleviate severe pain as well.

You should also talk to your doctor about medication to prevent cluster headaches. You’ll start taking the preventive drug when your headache first comes on, and you take the medication for as long your episodes generally last. Most doctors start with a sustained-release form of the calcium-channel blocker verapamil (Calan, others).

Another option is high doses of steroids such as prednisone, which can prevent further attacks within 24 to 48 hours. Once you’ve interrupted the pattern, your doctor can slowly reduce the dose to the minimum necessary to suppress your headaches. You’ll gradually taper the dose down to nothing.

Finally, avoid alcohol and cigarettes, both of which can trigger cluster headaches.

Dating should be fun for both people. If one of them starts hurting the other, either mentally or physically, it’s time to break things off – abuse only gets worse over time.

Dear Abby: My father-in-law is considering having my two precious little girls’ names tattooed on his arm. I’m not a fan of tattoos and would prefer my daughters’ names not be displayed in this manner.

Do my husband and I have a right to ask him not to do this?

Our history with him hasn’t been the most pleasant because he can

be manipulative and hard to deal with. I’m afraid if we tell him we are opposed, it will encourage him all the more to get the tattoo. How should we approach this without causing a ruckus? – Against It In Oklahoma Dear Against It: You can offer your opinion, but there is no way you and your husband can control what he does with his body.

Because the subject has already come up for discussion, it would not be rude to raise it again and explain NICELY that if he hasn’t done it yet, you would prefer the girls’ names not be displayed that way.

Of course, the decision is his to make, and while it may not be to your liking, I’m sure your fatherin-law considers it to be a loving gesture and a sign (literally) that he’s proud of his granddaughters.

If the tattoo has already been applied, then please, for the sake of family harmony, try to view it from that perspective.

Dear Abby: I’m 16 and have a 13-year-old sister. Our parents are divorced, and we live with our mother. We used to see our dad on visitations every other weekend, but he moved away, so now we see him for two weeks in the summer and one week during Christmas.

We talk to him a lot and have a good relationship. We’re scheduled to visit him soon.

Dad lives in a one-bedroom apartment and when we’re there, he lets us stay in the bedroom and he sleeps on the couch. He has just told us he is “coming out of the closet” and has a partner who is living with him. They plan on getting married now that it’s legal. When I asked him what the sleeping arrangements will be, he said he hasn’t figured it out yet, but will work it out.

We’re really not surprised to find out that Dad is gay, and we can accept that. But we’re really uncomfortable about spending two weeks in a one-bedroom apartment along with his partner when we don’t even know what the sleeping arrangements will be.

South is in five diamonds.

West starts with the spade ace and another spade. Declarer takes the trick and cashes the diamond ace, West discarding a spade. How should South continue?

South was too strong to open one no-trump, showing 15-17 points. When West leaped majestically to three spades, indicating a seven-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points, North bravely competed with four diamonds.

Now South wondered about suggesting a slam, but had a lot of losers.

Declarer had two aces to concede, so needed the club finesse to work. He also could not afford a second heart loser, but did not wish to rely on a 3-3 break or the 10 dropping doubleton.

South played a diamond to dummy’s king and called for the 10. To keep declarer out of the dummy, East covered with his jack. South won with his queen, played a diamond to dummy’s eight, and took the club finesse.

When it won, declarer cashed the club ace and now carefully led the heart jack. East won and returned a heart, but South then led dummy’s club jack and ruffed away East’s king. Back to dummy with a heart, declarer cashed the club 10 and discarded his last heart. Nicely done!
