A dive team from the Aurora Fire Department was dispatched, and firefighters recovered the man’s body.

Police do not yet know how or when the man entered the river.

Walgreens group eyes TIF money for location

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Enterprises officials say they qualify for up to $1.5 million in tax increment financing funds that are needed to bring a new Walgreens to downtown Batavia.

Batavia Enterprises Vice President Austin Dempsey presented aldermen Tuesday with an update on the project, which has been in the planning stages since 2010.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center.

Dempsey said the TIF funding is needed because of problems with the site, including a large storm drain line that runs through the city-owned portion of the property.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Delnor Hospital named to national program GENEVA – Cadence Health’s Delnor Hospital has been named to the Magnet Recognition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in recognition of the hospital’s patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practices. Delnor was the first non-academic hospital in the state to achieve Magnet recognition and is one of 33 Illinois hospitals with this recognition.

Nationwide, only 391 of the more than 6,000 U.S. health care organizations have received the magnet credential.

The program is a quadrennial review conducted by the ANCC, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. Magnet recognition is one of the criteria used by U.S. News & World Report in its assessment of the

nation’s hospitals for its ranking of best medical centers in 16 specialties.

Delnor was recently named by U.S. News as one of the “Best Hospitals” in Chicago and Illinois.

In addition, because the property has poor soil, the new building would have to be built on concrete caissons

or piers, which could cost $275,000, Dempsey said.

He estimated the overall project cost at between $5.5 million and $6 million, including $3 million to build

the store.

Dempsey said the city’s investment “would pay for itself” in increased property value.

City officials said they plan to examine the proposal.

“We don’t want to put taxpayers in a lurch,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said Wednesday. “We can’t turn it into a big tax burden.”

Schielke said the city’s TIF consultant will be examining the proposal.

“We want to make sure the payback is there,” he said. “I would welcome the idea of having a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia. It sends a positive message to the retail world.”

Dempsey said time is of the essence to get the project underway.

He said construction of the new store must begin by March to deliver the building to Walgreens corporate leaders by the end of September 2014.

“This will be a rock and anchor for the downtown for a long time,” Dempsey said.

‘Mayor of Marklund’ dies after illness

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When the “Mayor of Marklund” was on duty, he was a whirlwind of smiles, handshakes and highfives, a force of friendliness from his wheelchair, greeting one and all at the Marklund Mill Creek campus in Blackberry Township.

A client of the campus where people with severe developmental and physical disabilities live, Clint Kroth’s effervescent personality always shone through – to visitors, staff, volunteers and fellow clients.

Kroth, 29, died late Monday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva after a short illness, spokeswoman Dawn Lassiter-Brueske said.

“We’re all just walking around numb,” Lassiter-Brueske said. “He was playing a ballgame on Friday.

He was holding a baby that came to visit ... everyone is in shock.”

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said Kroth died of natural causes as a result of sepsis, a severe blood infection that began with an infection in his bowel. For privacy reasons, Marklund does not provide last names of its clients, but in an obituary notice, his family gave his full name of Clint Rodney Kroth.

He loved professional wrestling, particularly Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and old TV shows, especially “I Love Lucy.”

Kroth’s family is hosting a memorial service for him at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Independent Baptist Church, 380 W. Boughton Road, Bolingbrook.

A memorial for staff will be held today on the Marklund campus followed by a release of balloons, Lassiter-Brueske said.

Christine Wilkins, the lead certified nurse’s assistant for the group home where Kroth lived, said she has known him for 15 years. She said she is devastated by his death.

“He was one of a kind, a big personality and always happy,” Wilkins said. They had a running joke.

“Whenever I asked him to do something, like get his foot rest, he would say, ‘That’s $400,’ ” Wilkins said. “And I would say, ‘I’m broke.’ And he would say, ‘Oh well.’ It was always $400.”

Fonger said staff would form a committee to work on a memorial fund to honor Kroth’s memory.

“He really was the face of Marklund,” Fonger said. “He would take dignitaries on tours. Anybody who met him fell in love with him.”

Fonger recalled when Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns came to visit, and he called out to Kroth to meet him.

“He had this quizzical look on his face,” Fonger said. “I said, ‘Kevin Burns is the mayor of Geneva. You are the mayor of Marklund.’

He said, ‘Oh, OK.’ ” Later Burns sent him a personal letter “from the Mayor of Geneva to the Mayor of Marklund” which thrilled him to no end, Fonger said.

“He took that letter around with him,” Fonger said. “I told Mayor Burns, ‘You never sent a letter more loved than the letter you sent Clint.’ ”

who worked with Kroth, said he was an extraordinary person who rose above his limitations with his incredible personality.

“He was so welcoming to everybody who came through Marklund’s doors,” Puffer said. “Everybody was greeted with a handshake and a smile … He found happiness every day here. If he could be happy, so could we.

When you walk away from Marklund, you always remembered him.”

Marklund’s recreation therapist Wesley Kochan said Kroth’s death was like losing a family member.

“He was a very caring guy,” Kochan said. “I was having a bad day, and he found someone to help make a card to cheer me up. That really stands out … He would say, ‘[Someone] is in the hospital, can we pray?’ ” Kroth knew Kochan also was a professional musician.

He would bring his toy guitar and pretend to jam and sing.

“He would go, ‘Wes,’ and look at me with his right hand over his heart [when] he wanted me to do ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ ” Cass Koenig, a Marklund nurse, said Kroth had a positive impact on everyone he met.

“It’s like the light of the home is gone,” Koenig said.

“He was so full of life, beaming with optimism. ... He was everyone’s friend. ... He was our little mayor.”

CLINT RODNEY KROTH Born: Aug. 19, 1983; in Oak Park Died: Aug. 5, 2013; in Geneva GENEVA – Clint Rodney Kroth, 29, of Geneva, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at Delnor Hospital, Geneva, after a sudden, brief illness. Clint was born Aug. 19, 1983, in Oak Park, the son of Vernam and Shelley Kroth.

For 16 years, Clint was a resident of Marklund, a residential facility that serves individuals with profound developmental disabilities, first residing at the Marklund Children’s Home in Bloomingdale and then the Marklund at Mill Creek adult campus in Geneva.

An outgoing young man, Clint was considered the unofficial “Mayor of Marklund,” a role that he relished over recent years.

He greeted and toured visitors to the Marklund facility and befriended staff, peers and volunteers.

In addition to spending time with his friends, Clint received tremendous joy from watching WWE wrestling, particularly Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He also enjoyed watching old movies and TV shows, especially “I Love Lucy,” and playing games with friends.

The family is grateful to everyone at Marklund for the excellent care extended to Clint over the years as well as the wonderful upbringing he had living there since the age of 13.

Clint is survived by four sisters,

Trina Alexander (nee Kroth) of Oswego, Angie (Todd) Schinke (nee Kroth) of DePere, Wis., Janette (Kelly) Gillespie (nee Kroth) of Santa Ana, Calif., and Terri (Richard) Gardner (nee Kroth) of Romeoville. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; his best pal, Mickey Mouse; and many friends at Marklund.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his dear Grandma, Grace Kroth.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Independent Baptist Church (IBC), 380 W. Boughton Road in Bolingbrook.

Unlike the severe drought conditions in 2012, this summer’s weather conditions have provided ideal growing conditions for summer fruits and vegetables, especially corn.

“The corn is extra sweet and tender, so much better than last year,” said Wayne Srail, co-owner of Windy

Acres Farm on Fabyan Parkway in Geneva. “And the rain has come at the right times this year, and it’s keeping things a-growing.”

atty Marco won’t say this year’s crop of sweet corn will be the largest her family has ever pulled out of its soil on Kane County’s western line.

Nor, she said, will it be the best tasting.

But after last year, this summer’s harvest certainly seems like it is.

“Last year was just such a struggle with everything,” said Marco, one of the family members who run Wiltse’s Farm Fresh Produce in Maple Park. “But this year is just so different, like night and day.

“The condition of the corn, the amount of the corn, the flavor of the corn, everything is just so much better.”

This summer, farmers running farm stands in the Tri-Cities area and elsewhere in Kane County and northern Illinois are almost all smiles as they move through the summer fruits and vegetables harvest season.

And a quick glance at the abundance and quality of the fruits and vegetables filling their bins offers an easy explanation for their good mood.

The bountiful haul has primarily stemmed from the weather this summer, local growers said.

Whereas last summer brought hot, dry weather in spades, this summer’s temperatures and rainfall have produced much more ideal growing conditions for virtually all locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Sweet corn, local growers said, is abundant again this year.

“It’s actually kind of a normal year,” Marco said. “And after last year, that’s a really good thing.”

A year ago, a severe drought left just 4 percent of the state’s corn rated good, and none of it was considered excellent by the USDA. Almost three-fourths of Illinois’ corn was rated poor to very poor, according to the USDA’s Aug. 6, 2012, crop progress report.

That poor report set the stage for severely reduced corn production in 2012.

Statewide, production was down 33 percent vs. 2011.

And in Kane County, corn production dropped by about 19 percent from a year earlier.

But this year, the story is much different, as farmers are looking forward to a much better harvest – even if they are hoping for a hot August to really boost growth among their rows of corn.

Local produce growers also said they wouldn’t mind a little more heat to help ripen some of the heat-loving fruit, like tomatoes. But generally, they said they are not complaining.

“We’ve got lots of everything,” Srail said. “Tomatoes, our peppers are jumbo-sized, cantaloupe, watermelon and we have a giant crop of onions this year.”

Marco said the crew at Wiltse’s has a similar bounty to share with its customers.

And she and Srail said customers are responding to the good news this year, streaming into their farm stands to harvest their own locally grown goodies.

“I think people around here came to believe that it would always be readily available,” Marco said. “But last year caught some of them off guard, and this year they realized a little more what they have right around where they live.”

Koenen in line for city administrator post in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Pending St. Charles City Council approval, Public Works Director Mark Koenen will change his job title to city administrator Aug. 31.

“I have to say I was honored to be invited to accept the position,” Koenen said.

“It seems right.”

M a y o r Ray Rogina announced Koenen’s upcoming appointment Mark Koenen Wednesday.

The St. Charles City Council is set to vote on the nomination Aug. 19.

“I expect a unanimous vote on Aug. 19,” Rogina said, noting aldermen have shown enthusiasm about Koenen considering the job.

Koenen will replace outgoing City Administrator Brian Townsend, who announced last month that he accepted the position of Schaumburg village manager.

About finding a new city administrator, Rogina said he asked himself whether there was an internal candidate who knows the town and the community.

“The answer came pretty quickly in the form of Mark Koenen,” he said.

According to the city news release, Koenen has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.

In 2012, he was awarded Life Membership status to the American Public Works Association.

He has been with the city since 1982, when he began as a civil engineer, he said. He became Public Works director in 1990.

According to the release, the Public Works Department has 96 employees and a $92 million budget, making it St. Charles’ largest department.

Under Koenen’s leadership, the Red Gate Bridge was completed on time and under budget, and street and utility maintenance has been a priority, as has seeking state and federal grant funding and low-interest loans for infrastructure upgrades and replacement.

Koenen said he will miss his Public Works responsibilities – such as providing services that make people’s quality of life easier – but he also is looking forward to having a larger role in making St. Charles a special place.

Koenen said he will need to put together a plan about finding a new Public Works director.

In the meantime, he said, the assistant director, Peter Suhr, will step in.

WEST CHICAGO – A West Chicago priest convicted of criminal sexual abuse was deported to his native country of Bolivia on Aug. 6, according to a news release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Alejandro Flores, 40, pleaded guilty in 2010 to charges that he abused a St. Charles boy after his relationship with the 13-year-old from St.

Mary’s Catholic Parish in West Chicago was investigated. He was released on parole in early June after serving about 80 percent of a four-year prison sentence.

After Flores was released, he was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending deportation proceedings, according to the release. As a criminal alien convicted of an aggravated felony, Flores is barred for life from entering the United States.

Judge finds driver in fatal crash guilty Oswego man sentenced to six months of court supervision

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Kane County Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Flood on Wednesday found an Oswego man guilty of not properly yielding in a two-car collision in February that killed a 61-year-old Sugar Grove man.

Flood sentenced Craig Schindlbeck of Oswego, a Naperville North school teacher, to six months court supervision. He also was fined $300.

She based her sentence on

the fact that Schindlbeck does not have a history of traffic violations.

David Schele Sr., who owned and operated the Close Encounters Collision Center in North Aurora for 30 years, was killed in the crash.

A lawsuit was filed against Schindlbeck by Schele’s family.

“It seems like you were trying to be cautious,” Flood told Schindlbeck.

The Batavia Police Department on March 22 ticketed

Schindlbeck for failure to yield while turning left.

He pleaded not guilty.

Schindlbeck testified that the light was green when he entered the intersection.

“I was in the center of the intersection, waiting for the traffic to clear,” he said. “The light was red when I made the turn. I never saw the [other] vehicle prior to the collision.”

Schindlbeck’s attorney, Frank Giampoli, did not want to comment after Flood’s ruling.

After that, he worked as the director of highways for Warren County for five years, then came to Kane County as transportation director from 1984 until his retirement in 1997.

Fakroddin said he was doing private consulting until he was asked to serve on the RTA board as Kane’s representative.

He said he chose to remain on the Human Rights Commission, which involves listening to cases and reviewing briefs.

“Discrimination is not just the color of skin, and religion, but also in housing, gender and sexual orientation,” Fakroddin said. “They all come to us.”

In his resignation letter, released by Lauzen’s office, Fakroddin noted a personal connection to protecting human rights.

“While growing up in the 1950s, I have personally

witnessed human and civil rights violations,” Fakroddin wrote in part. “And as a commissioner for the Human Rights Commission, I have been part of the process of redressing proven civil rights violations committed against Illinois citizens.”

Fakroddin said while he is in good health, he wanted to continue serving the public as long as he can.

“The Lord has been good to me,” Fakroddin said.

Another RTA board member, the Rev. Tyrone Crider, left July 31 after his failure to repay a $91,000 state grant became public. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan sued Crider in 2011, records show.

In Gates’ letter to Quinn, he states his concern regarding the appointment of Frank Zuccarelli to the CTA Board because Zuccarelli also is the Thornton Township supervisor, a dual role that “violates the intent of section 19 of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Act.” But Quinn spokesman

Klinzman said the two situations are completely different.

“The statute prohibits anyone who is paid by a municipality, county, or state government from serving.

The Illinois municipal code explicitly states that a township official does not fall under these categories,” Klinzman said.

“Zuccarelli is a military veteran and represents a region that has historically been underserved by public transportation,” Klinzman said in an email. “He [Zuccarelli] is filling a position that is specifically designated to represent the suburbs of Cook County, and he is a strong advocate for that region.”

Fakroddin said because of the current scrutiny of Metra, everyone who serves on dual boards also is being scrutinized.

“Before, nobody paid any attention,” Fakroddin said.

“Now they’re looking into every board member – who is working where.”

ST. CHARLES – The retired former director of the Kane County Division of Transportation, Nabi Fakroddin, resigned his position on the Regional Transportation Authority board Tuesday, following concerns that he could not legally serve there and on the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen appointed Fakroddin, 74, of St. Charles, in April as Kane County’s representative. Members of the 16-member board represent their respective regions in four-year terms.

The issue was raised by RTA Board Chairman John Gates Jr., who advised in a letter Aug. 6 to Gov. Quinn that “It is my belief that according to the law, it may not be permissible for him to continue to serve on the RTA board, and Mr. Fakroddin agreed … He will be submitting his resignation to Kane County Chairman Lauzen.”

Quinn spokesman Grant Klinzman said in an email response that Gates “is mistaken on the law, and our office will follow up with him on this matter.”

RTA board members are paid $25,000 a year, spokeswoman Susan Massel said.

Human Rights Commissioners are paid $46,960, according to the appointments page of the State of Illinois Nabi website.

Fakroddin Lauzen did not return a message seeking comment.

The RTA is the financial and oversight body for the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace.

Fakroddin said he was considering an unpaid position Gates had offered him on the RTA Citizens Advisory Board, which advises the board of problems and suggestions for solutions.

OPINIONS Preparing for college and being an English major As I’ve written about before, this fall I will be a freshman at Saint Mary’s College. Of course, this is exciting, terrifying, way too late and way too soon. Room and board, my meal plan, making new friends and the like are keeping me (and my parents) up at night.

But when it comes down to it, the thing I’m equally terrified and ecstatic for is the reason I’m going away to college – my education.

I didn’t like high school very much. Regardless, my favorite part about high school, other than co-ed dodgeball, was the actual learning. I am a nerd and proud of that. I love reading and truly did enjoy a lot of the books we read in English.

But my favorite class of all of high school was when I was a teacher’s assistant at Williamsburg Elementary. I’ve therefore decided to take my favorite and strongest subject, English, and teach it to others.

This makes me an English major with a minor in secondary education this year. And, of course, I’ve heard rhetoric and criticism for my decision to go into English. If you’re shaking your head, too, I’d like to remind you that you’re reading this column in a newspaper.

I’m going into English because there’s just so much you can do with teaching an English class. I want to make kids read books that interest and captivate them; I want to get into debates like the ones that have riled up my high school experience; I want to teach people to write what they feel and know and care about.

Teaching English to others is my dream. To achieve it, I

Will psychology be more lab-science based or social-science based? Do I really want to learn about contested masculinities and their impact in society? What if I discover a new passion of mine, like Egyptology or dance? What if I’m no good at English?

College is a big step, one that not everyone gets to take. But I’m ready to take classes that really do interest me and begin on the path to being an educator. It’s scary, yes, but I want to learn more about the world and more about who I am. I’m excited for where Saint Mary’s will take me, and I know that wherever I go, it’s the place I’m meant to be.

Will Medicare payment fixes push hospital mergers?

By PETER ORSZAG Bloomberg News Improving the U.S. healthcare system requires encouraging low-value doctors and hospitals to practice as well as high-value ones do. The gap between the two is wide.

Because this variation doesn’t appear to be reliably correlated with differences in quality, value seems to be much higher in some settings than in others.

A new report from the Institute of Medicine provides some answers. A blue-ribbon panel, asked by Congress to examine whether Medicare should pay more in high-value areas of the country than in low-value ones, concluded that would be unwise – instead, the agency should reward value provided by individual doctors and hospitals.

Medicare and private insurance poses a fundamental dilemma for policymakers.

The Institute of Medicine panel, like most other health economists and experts, strongly supports the healthcare system’s shift away from fee-for-service payment and toward paying for value because this should discourage unnecessary care. At the same time, it also loads more risk onto doctors and hospitals, as if they were the insurers. Yet many of them lack the scale to spread the risks efficiently. This is one reason so many providers are looking to merge with one another.

As a result, there’s even more pressure for concentration in local hospital markets. That means even higher price markups for private insurers.

Ultimately, then, value-based payments, by discouraging unnecessary care, may narrow the

spending variation in Medicare but – by encouraging consolidation and increased markups – widen price and spending variation in commercial insurance.

The institute thus raises one issue not mentioned in the report itself: a growing tension between the trend toward consolidation in health care and the effort to move away from fee-for-service payment.

That shouldn’t discourage Medicare from adopting value-based payments. It does suggest, however, that policymakers will need to watch for excessive local hospital concentration and markups and to stay alert to any violations of antitrust laws.

Get ready for ‘Patrick Kane County’ Day

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Scott Hajek said he never thought he would be able to convince Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane to celebrate the team’s Stanley Cup championship in Kane County.

But Hajek, the county’s water resources manager, said he

thought it would make sense to recognize the fact that the NHL star and the county share the Kane name. Last month, the Kane County Board unanimously approved a resolution naming today as “Patrick Kane County” Day. It will be celebrated today to honor Kane’s uniform No. 88.

“Obviously, the great dream would be to have him

show up with the Cup,” Hajek said. “I never saw that as a realistic expectation. He’s a busy guy.”

Instead, a championship flag will be flown at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. In a news release, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said, “we are truly excited and proud to honor Patrick Kane

involving rotation through the activities of shovel excavation, screening of excavated soil for artifact recovery and washing of recovered artifacts.

Participants who successfully complete 40 or more hours will receive certificates documenting hours of training and supervised experience in historical archaeology.

And although Hajek said it was a longshot, he said he did try to reach out to Kane for a visit. But Hajek acknowledged Kane “has got bigger priorities.”

“This is just a way to honor the Blackhawks and Patrick Kane, who has the same name as our county,” Hajek said. “It seemed like a fun thing to do.”

Jalapeño Grille marks 10 years in St. Charles

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – With its colorful exterior, The Jalapeño Grille in St. Charles is hard to miss. But long before the building got its splashy paint job, it caught the eye of the Calderon family.

Anastacio and Mary Calderon were running a car wash business across the street from the building perched at 602 Geneva Road.

Ten years ago, the building housed a hot dog joint. But the Calderons had a dream of opening an authentic Mexican restaurant there.

Their dream materialized when the building vacated, and they got a chance to open The Jalapeño Grille. Next month, they’ll be celebrating a decade of serving up Mexican and American fare.

One of the more popular dishes, the Volcan, will be featured in a “Chicago’s Best” segment on WGN on Sunday, Aug. 11. The Volcan consists of a homemade corn bread patty, piled high with beans, chihuahua cheese (similar to mozzarella cheese) and choice of chorizo or ham, with three over-easy eggs and homemade ranchero sauce.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” said Mary Calderon about that dish being selected for the “Best Breakfast” segment.

“It’s one of my sister’s favorites who comes from Elmhurst to eat it.”

Other popular breakfast dishes, which are served all day, include the chilaquiles – corn tortilla chips sauteed in green or red sauce with steak or chorizo and three over-easy eggs topped with beans. The specialty burritos and fishand-shrimp tacos also have

sauces. Fresh ingredients are prepped in the morning and then again in the afternoon, she said.

Aside from serving Mexican dishes, the restaurant offers hamburgers, hot dogs and fresh-cut french fries.

Mary Calderon said the reason they chose to serve American fare is because the restaurant before theirs was established as a hot dog joint.

Plus, it offers a bigger variety for families with all different tastes, she said.

The restaurant truly is a family enterprise – the Calderons’ nieces and nephews pitch in, as do their children, Al, 17, and Rebecca, 15. Their third child, Stevie, is 11. The exterior of the building was painted by local artist Francis Joseph Gagnepain IV of Batavia.

And 10 years in business is something to celebrate, especially weathering through a tough economy in recent years.

“It is a hard business to be in. But even in a slow economy, you can afford a taco,” said Mary Calderon. “I think we’re successful because we’re here. We work it. ... The secret is you gotta be here.”

She said when workers are trained to cook there, she and her husband always stress one thing.

“If it’s something you wouldn’t eat, we wouldn’t serve it to anyone else,” she said.

Uncorked: California wine has Spanish influence The learning curve seems to have been mastered quickly.

Dan Cederquist never made wine using Tempranillo fruit, yet after just eight vintages of Matchbook, he’s crafted the finest domestic interpretation of the varietal most commonly associated with Spain.

Grown in poor, rocky soil under the hot sun that sends daytime temperatures soaring in the Dunnigan Hills American Viticultural Area in the Sacramento Valley, Matchbook Tempranillo is a stunning New World interpretation that still has plenty of Old World characteristics.

Winemaker spotlight A Mediterranean climate is just part of what imparts a Spanish influence on Matchbook Tempranillo.

“We are in a great region that has an influence very similar to Spain,” said winemaker and partner Dan Cederquist, who got his start in the industry at Stag’s Leap in Napa Valley. “We have hot days with daytime temperatures in the high 90s or low 100s, yet – because of the Pacific Ocean – it cools down at night. The vines are cuttings from the Pesquera region in Spain and are planted in Corning red gravelly soil, which helps control the limited water the vines receive.

“Because we are closer to the coast, it gets cooler at

night and it allows for full development. Tempranillo can be tannic and harsh.

Sometimes it takes five years in the barrel to be tamed. But we are able to blend it a little, do some pump overs and bleed off some juice. We want intense, not hard wines. It’s a fine line to find the balance.”

The balance was found, however, and a varietal known for early ripening has adapted well to the region.

The cooperage has a Spanish influence. A mixture of Spanish and American barrels impart two distinct flavors.

There’s a mocha influence from the Spanish barrels and a wonderful vanilla note from the American oak.

Attention to detail added characteristics found in the Spanish interpretation of Tempranillo, yet the bright sunshine and heat of California are unmistakable.

The blueberry and Bristol raspberry fruit notes the heat helps to impart are unmistakable.

“We wanted to increase the Spanish association and get a nice chocolate flavor,” Cederquist said. “We get a vanilla note from the domestic barrels. I really like the track we are on; there’s also

a nice fruit characteristic. I’d never worked with Tempranillo before. It took some time to learn the terroir, but after eight years I think we’ve really dialed it in. We’ve got a goal to make Tempranillo the best wine on the planet.”

What to buy Matchbook, Tempranillo 2010 ($14.99): Tempranillo is often a varietal that’s crafted on a winemaker’s whim in California. With Matchbook Tempranillo, a serious examination of the varietal offers blueberry, Bristol raspberry, cigar wrapper, clove and rosemary. It was a great crowd and a great opportunity. I’m lucky to have been able to do that even once.

ES: And, of course, you will be at Fermilab on Aug. 17.

DH: Indeed. My home turf.

ES: But I understand that music came first. You started playing guitar when you were 15.

DH: That’s right. I didn’t have any ambitions to be a physicist when I first started playing guitar. Being a rock star sounded a lot more fun at the time.

ES: I suppose that most people don’t know what physicists do outside of a lab. Is it that unusual to be both a physicist and a guitarist for a band?

DH: There are a lot of physicists who are accomplished musicians, way more than you might think. I think there is some connection between math and science and music.

I’m not sure I have my finger on what that is. Usually the demands of the job are

So, maybe I’m a little different in that respect.

ES: I know that 10 years ago, you were in a punk band.

DH: Yeah, yeah. I used to play a lot of punk rock. That was my thing back in the day.

In fact, that’s the thing that I think that makes The Congregation so different from the other big soul bands in Chicago. Half the band are former punk rock guys who have a love for soul music, but we don’t go about it the same way that a lot of the more traditionally minded soul musicians do.

ES: Do you think that brings new energy to the band?

DH: Yeah, I promise it does.

ES: Because you wouldn’t describe yourselves as strictly a soul band, right?

DH: I wouldn’t. We love soul music, and that’s the primary thing we go out there to play, but all sorts of other stuff bleeds into it.

We aren’t purists. We aren’t trying to recreate something that hasn’t existed in the world since 1968.

We’re trying to take that stuff, and then create new music through that lens, and through the lens of all the influences that have come and gone since.

ES: I understand that you met

band with some guys. Three of us in the band had been talking about maybe putting together a soul project.

And then we played this show where Gina’s band was on the same bill. At sound check, we heard her sing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” the classic ’60s soul tune, and we looked at each other and we decided we were going to try to steal her from that band, and we did.

ES: She does have a powerful voice.

DH: No doubt. I wouldn’t want to have anyone else singing in my band.

ES: The band seems to be rising pretty fast. Are things following the track that you envisioned for The Congregation?

DH: Oh, that depends on the day of the week. I think different people in the band have a slightly different vision of what they think the band is or should be.

It ends up being pretty collaborative. When I play our recordings, or when I take a step back and look at what I think we do musically, it’s not exactly what I think any one of us had in mind when we started out to do it, but it kind of organically grew into this thing that I think we can all connect with and relate to.

Draftees watch old guard beat Bees

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Another early-round pick from the Cubs’ 2013 draft class joined the Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Wednesday.

A fan base salivating to see third baseman Kris Bryant remains on the lookout for No. 1.

Yes, Bryant, the Cubs’ second overall selection in the June draft, still is suiting up for Short-A Boise.

But Rob Zastryzny, the Missouri left-hander taken one round later, brought good news from Idaho to Geneva

before the Cougars’ 7-4 win against Burlington.

“Bryant’s a really good guy,” Zastryzny said. “He came in, he’s got a lot of hype around him and a lot of pressure and everything, and he handled it really well. He’s just a really, really down-to-Earth guy, and I look forward to playing with him in the future. The guy’s the real deal.”

Bryant entered Wednesday batting .278 in 15 games with Boise, with three home runs and 13 RBIs. Cubs brass keeps each player on an individual timetable, and, ultimate-

ly, Bryant’s next landing spot is up to president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod.

Jeimer Candelario, a 19-year-old the Cubs signed as a nondrafted free agent in September 2010, has started at third base for the Cougars throughout his first full professional season. At this point, bringing in Bryant, a former college star at San Diego, might stunt Candelario’s progress.

Newcomer Zastryzny eager to make name GENEVA – Left-hander Rob Zastryzny embraced his role as the new guy Wednesday afternoon, greeting Cougars teammates as they approached his locker or he saw them elsewhere in the clubhouse.

The second-round draft pick of the parent Cubs in June only met a handful of current Cougars while beginning his summer with Short-A Boise.

Zastryzny is optimistic about making similarly seamless introductions along a hopeful path to Wrigley Field.

“Personality-wise, every team I’ve been on has been really nice,” Zastryzny said. “It’s just a bunch of baseball players out there chasing after their dreams. We all have the same goal, we all have the same interest, and that’s really fun.”

Drafted after his junior season at Missouri, Zastryzny – pronounced ZAS-tris-nee – fields one question in particular early in most conversations.

Hint: it’s all in a name.

“Ooooh. That’s a tough one,” manager Mark Johnson said. “That’s even a tough one to spell.”

Zastryzny actually found run support harder to come by during his final collegiate season. He went 2-9 overall but was often the victim of a lack of offense. The Tigers backed him with just 25 runs in 10 Southeastern Conference

Zastryzny learned of his promotion from Boise while golfing Monday. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, but a longtime resident of Texas after his parents took jobs there during his infancy, he remarked about the abundance of Blackhawks apparel at the airport.

Zastryzny is an avid Edmonton Oilers fan.

The Cougars plan to make Zastryzny the second leg of a piggyback with Cubs fourth-rounder Tyler Skulina beginning Friday. The Cubs are easing Zastryzny into his development; he pitched just 141/3 innings over eight games and seven starts at Boise, compiling a 3.04 ERA. “I’m not sure how long I’ll go or whatever,” Zastryzny said. “I just kind of can’t wait to get out there and throw.

It doesn’t really matter how long.”

Hobbled Almora reeling good: Sidelined on the 7-day disabled list with a hamstring injury retroactive to Monday, Cougars center fielder Albert Almora won’t be seen between the lines at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for

another short while.

Apparently, his other favorite pastime remains intact.

On Wednesday, Almora tweeted a picture of himself holding up a proud catch from the Fox River. Fishing is a favorite hobby of Almora and several housemates who live with host parents Warren and Sam Drewes of St. Charles along Route 31.

As for the injury, Almora tweaked his hamstring during Sunday’s game at Clinton. Johnson said Almora first felt a twinge while darting out of the batter’s box in his first at-bat, then later while pursuing a ball in the outfield.

He left the game in the fourth inning after flying out to center field.

“He’s ready to do whatever he’s got to do to get ready to come back,” Johnson said. “He’s going to work harder than anybody else to come back from things. That’s why he is the player that he is.”

Almora was leading the Cougars with a .329 average and .376 on-base percentage in 61 games, with three home runs and 23 RBIs.

I’m still struck whenever I read her books every few years that they’re so brisk and intelligent and there’s cultural and intellectual criticism in every line.

Every time I read them I find new lines that are just so completely witty that I have no recollection of having read before. And it’s always great finding them again.

By RACHEL LUBITZ The Washington Post Adelle Waldman first got serious about writing after she dropped out of Brown University for a year and became a waitress at an Arizona sports bar. To pass the time, the Baltimore native read everything she could find and started writing short stories, all of which she admits are now embarrassing to reread.

She went back to Providence, R.I., graduated and moved to New York City, eventually earning a journalism degree from Columbia and landing newspaper jobs, including one as a columnist for the Wall Street Journal in New York.

More important, she began writing a novel.

It took Waldman, 36, five years to finish and publish her debut, “The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.” The book has been widely praised as an incisive and witty piece of social criticism focused on contemporary dating, with clever nods to writers such as Jane Austen and Dorothy Parker.

Before a scheduled visit to Politics and Prose Bookstore Aug. 5, Waldman spoke with The Washington Post about inspiration, relationships and the challenges of creating a “real” and possibly unlikable protagonist.

Rachel Lubitz: What made you decide to write this book and have it in Nate’s perspective?

Adelle Waldman: It sort of seemed like a dare. I started thinking about how many books I had read by male authors about this young guy who comes to the city and conquers it with his intellect and charm and covers a wide swath of the female population and it’s all very charming.

of these books. I think what happens with a lot of these books is that there’s a truth about the man in the center that’s being edited out and glorified. It just seemed really interesting if I could focus on the aspects of the character being mean and I don’t just whitewash over the ugly, daily, minute details of rating women and things that I think a person wouldn’t write if they were trying to write a more self-glorifying account.

I want Nate to seem like a person that I had met or could have met that’s hard to categorize. I didn’t want to analyze.

And I thought that sometimes he’s not the nicest of guys and maybe people don’t want to read about this guy, but I shut that off because I really wanted to write about him and this book.

There’s something really gratifying about that, that all those conversations talking about these guys and girls and everyone’s relationships that they turned out incredibly useful. It wasn’t like I could ask my male friends what Nate’s problem was, but I could talk to them about dating. And I understood that Nate doesn’t mean to be mean; he’s not trying to hurt people.

But there’s the combination of lack of empathy and selfishness at the same time.

RL: Did you want us to like – actually like – Nate? What did you want us to understand about him?

AW: I tried really hard to

RL: You’ve written a number of columns for Slate on Jane Austen.

RL: Since you write from Nate’s point of view, can you think of any great novels that are also written from the perspective of an unlikely narrator?

AW: One book that comes to

Infant hip dysplasia treatment is usually effective Dear Doctor K: My baby has developmental dysplasia of the hip. What is this? How will it be treated?

Dear Reader: Because I’m not a pediatrician, I haven’t seen a baby with developmental dysplasia of the hip since I was in medical school. But I talked with pediatrician colleagues here at Harvard Medical School and refreshed my memory.

Our hips are designed to support our full weight while allowing movement in all directions. To accomplish this, the rounded top of the thigh bone (femur) fits into a cup-shaped socket in the pelvis called the acetabulum. The “ball” of the femur sits inside the socket. (I’ve put an illustration of the hip joint on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

In developmental dysplasia of the hip, the ball at the top of the femur moves in and out of the socket either partway or all the way. That’s not supposed to happen: It makes the hip unreliable in supporting the baby’s weight.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff enough. This condition usually is present at birth, but it can develop after birth, during infancy or childhood. Usually just one hip is affected, but in about 20 percent of children with this condition it affects both hips.

The condition is more common in babies who were breech deliveries. It also seems to run in families. It happens more often in little girls than in little boys, and more often in firstborn infants.

We don’t know why.

Doctors routinely check for developmental dysplasia of the hip in newborns and at follow-up well-baby visits. If the doctor feels unusual movement of the hip, he or she will use ultrasound or X-rays to confirm the diagnosis.

Left untreated, developmental dysplasia of the hip can lead to a shortened leg, arthritis, difficulty walking and long-term pain.

But with early treatment, most children can walk normally and have normal hip function.

Treatment depends on the child’s age:

• Newborns usually wear a special device, such as the Pavlik harness or the Frejka splint.

These devices keep the top of the femur in the socket the right way. The hip ligaments gradually tighten and the hip joint usually stabilizes.

• For infants age 1 month to 6 months, the doctor will try a harness or splint. If these devices don’t help, the doctor will consider gently (and nonsurgically) putting the head of the femur in place while the child is under anesthesia. This is called a closed reduction. The child then wears a body cast (spica cast) until the hip joint is normal.

• Most children age 6 months to 2 years can be treated with closed reduction and a spica cast. Some require open surgery.

• For children older than 2 years, surgery is often needed, followed by a spica cast.

Fortunately, treatment is usually effective, and the child does not have hip problems later in life.

Her parents were getting a divorce and she and her mom were moved to California. We stayed in touch.

Last week she called me saying she was returning to Rockford.

Yesterday she came over to my house, and I couldn’t believe she was the same girl. Her hair was orange, and she had a stud in her nose. She was wearing tight shorts that barely covered her hips and a tank top. She also reeked of tobacco smoke. I was glad my mom wasn’t home to see her!

What shall I do about our friendship? Ask a lot of questions and be a good listener. At the end of this meeting, you will know whether she has changed so much that you no longer feel a connection with her.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and will be in high school in September.

I’m a fairly attractive girl, but I do have a red birthmark on my cheek that has caused me, at times, to be embarrassed. Some time ago, I tried to cover it up with makeup, but I decided to stop because the kids who know me said I looked better without the makeup.

I told my dad I’d like to have the birthmark removed, and he took me to

The doctor told us the birthmark could be removed by laser surgery for somewhere between $2,000 and $3,000. My dad thought that was reasonable and told my mother that if his insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, he’d pay for it himself.

I really was thrilled, but my grandmother (who lives with us and hates my father) is trying to convince my mom not to allow me to have the surgery because I was made by God, and God wouldn’t want his work to be changed. My mom is undecided about me having the surgery. I’m really worried that she will be influenced by my grandmother, and I might not be allowed to have it. – Nameless, Philadelphia, Pa. Dear Nameless: I can’t change anyone’s mind, but I can certainly offer my point of view, and I’m on your side 100 percent. I endorse the laser treatment to remove an unwanted birthmark. It’s a relatively simple procedure that could make an enormous difference in a teenager’s self-esteem.

This isn’t about God any more than prescription glasses are, or any other medical correction to the human body we were born with.

Your grandmother’s resistance may be as much about her dislike of your father as it is about the procedure itself. I definitely don’t think she should have the final say.

The trick is always to play bridge – whether in pairs, teams or Chicago – keeping the odds in mind. In today’s deal, what is the right way to play the heart suit for no losers?

In the auction, tournament players sitting West would have responded three diamonds, pre-emptive, showing a lot of diamonds and a weak hand. (With game-invitational values and diamond support, West would have responded two hearts, a cue-bid raise.) Then, North would not have been strong enough to advance with three hearts, and it would have been dangerous for South to balance with a takeout double when he had only two spades. As it went, South made a game-try with three clubs, which North rejected. She had good clubs, but did not like the rest of her hand.

South has four top losers: two spades and two diamonds. In isolation, the best play for no heart loser is to lead dummy’s jack, planning to run the eight on the second round, which would have worked. However, West led the diamond 10. East won with his ace and returned the suit. West won, shifted to the spade king, and played another spade. East won and led a third spade.

If West had the heart seven-doubleton, declarer had to ruff with his nine. But with this layout, he had to ruff with his five. Since West could hold two seven-doubletons and only one four-two-doubleton, South ruffed with his nine and went down one.
