“I’d say, ‘It took me 12 years to bring this car around to where it is. You don’t have 12 years. You’ve got to get done faster than that,’” he said.

Orednick’s wife, Eileen, said she agreed with his analogy comparing himself to the car.

“It gave him something to share with the nurses and doctors, and they could see it too because what they do is strip him down and then start building him back up, and that’s what he did to his car,” she said.

Because of all the touching thank you letters she received from Orednick and his family, Stout was just as eager to reach out to him once she was allowed.

Stout and the Orednick family have had many phone and email conversations since then.

“They’re probably the nicest people I’ve been in contact with,” Stout said. “It’s been a great, positive experience.”

When starting his cancer treatments at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Orednick would bring pictures of his vintage car to show to doctors and nurses.

He is grateful to Be The Match and hopes the drive will find more donors in order to save lives.

“Without donors, they don’t have anything,” Orednick said.

Donors must be between ages 18 and 44 and meet Be The Match’s health guidelines. Registration involves filling out a medical history form and taking a sample from a cheek swab.

LEMONT – When Paul Orednick of Lemont was going through treatment for a rare form of blood cancer, he thought of the rusty 1932 Chevy Five Window Coup he had rebuilt.

“I immediately for some reason made the connection between rust and cancer,” he said.

“People who work with metal will refer to rust as cancer.”

Through a combination of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, Orednick, 73, now is cancer free. He will meet the stem cell donor who helped save his life in person for the first time during the weekly Lemont Legends Cruise Night on Wednesday.

Orednick also has organized a registry drive for Be The Match, the organization that found his stem cell donor.

He was diagnosed with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm in December 2011 and was told he had less than a year to live without a blood stem cell transplant.

His family knew nothing about his donor other than that she was a 24-year-old woman from St. Louis. They took to calling her “Hope.”

Be The Match does not allow donors and recipients to meet each other until a year after the transplant. When the year elapsed in March, Orednick made the request to contact her.

“We found out her name was Destiny,” he said.

Destiny Stout is a middle school math teacher at KIPP Inspire Academy in St. Louis.

She said she registered for Be The Match in college because she thought the guy at the organization’s table was cute.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – An unknown offender forced entry into a residence and took $8,035 in jewelry, according to a Lemont Police Department report.

Police received a complaint about suspicious circumstance at 2:49 p.m. July 23 in the 0-50 block of Meagan Lane, Lemont. The incident has been classified as a residential burglary, the report said.

According to the report, a witness described the suspect as a short, heavyset hispanic man with a mustache. The suspect reportedly stands 5 feet 2 inches in height, weighs 240 pounds and was wearing gray shorts and a gray shirt at the time of the incident.

LEMONT – It has been a “unique year” in terms of the Lemont Park District’s summer construction projects, said park district Executive Director Louise Egofske.

The district is nearing completion on improvements to the Centenni al Campus front entrance, an update to the 65-year-old Virginia Reed Park and the addition of bathrooms to Bambrick Park.

The front entrance construction, which is taking place along 127th Street and is adjacent to Old Quarry Middle School, is the largest project and is being funded primarily by a $400,000 “Safe Routes to School” federal grant.

Egofske said the front entrance has seen increased traffic since the opening of the CORE Fitness and Aquatic Complex and the construction will improve pedestrian and vehicle safety.

“Traffic will definitely have a specific flow to it,” she said.

District Board of Commissioners President Pat Sexton said the district wanted to complete the project as soon as possible.

“We are under a timeline to get it done before the school year starts,” he said.

District officials are enthusiastically anticipating

Thrift store volunteers aid in tornado recovery

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Two days after the tornadoes hit Oklahoma in May, Edna Bice came into the Second Chance Thrift Shoppe in Lemont with an idea to help the victims.

Since then, Bice and Vicki Tabor, who volunteer at the store, have made two trips to Oklahoma to donate supplies, money and services.

“If everyone could see what I’ve seen, they would help,” said Bice, who is a resident of Bridgeview and works at KA Steel Chemicals in Lemont.

Bice was compelled to aid the victims after seeing footage of the tornado damage.

“They have nothing, with families living in tents,” Bice said. “They keep getting hit over and over.”

When Bice offered to drive a truck of supplies to Oklahoma, Tabor, a resident of Hickory Hills, volunteered to go with her.

“Personally, I’m not able to give financially,” she said.

“But I had the time. I was available.”

On the first trip, which was during Memorial Day weekend, Bice and Tabor dropped off supplies at churches in Oklahoma City.

Staff at the thrift store pulled older merchandise to send and raised money to buy supplies and pay for transportation and lodging.

In two days, the volunteers raised almost $1,000 from individuals and businesses in the community.

Tabor said the trip was so rewarding that they wanted

to make another one. But this time, she and Bice conducted more research to determine a specific area that needed help.

In the process, they discovered SteelMan Estates, a mobile home park in Shawnee, Okla. Tabor said that of the 81 mobile homes that were in the park before the tornado, six remained inhabitable.

When Bice and Tabor left the weekend of July 12, they had a completely full truck of supplies and more than $1,300 in donations.

Once in Shawnee, they worked with God’s Hand Up ministries and a motorcycle group called the Defenders Coalition of Independent Riders.

“They couldn’t believe that we would just get in a truck and drive down there,” Tabor said.

Bice and Tabor will not be making another trip to Oklahoma, but the thrift store will continue to collect money to support rebuilding efforts at SteelMan Estates.

“This is not something that’s going away,” Bice said.

“I want to do more.”

There is a collection jar at the thrift store at 44 Stephen St. and other businesses in Lemont have them, as well. Bice also hopes to hold a fundraiser at CC’s Grove Inn in Willlow Springs.

Although it is her first emergency aid experience, Bice said assisting victims after a natural disaster fits her go-getter personality.

“I just hope nothing happens anymore,” she said.

“But I could see myself helping out again.”

grill so it would heat the cow on the outside with charcoal and through the spit using avocado oil.

Wireless radio temperatures are placed inside the cow and the results appear on a computer screen, so Bromberek knows when the meat is done.

Bromberek said serving the beef at events is not an option because of the difficulty involved.

He does, however, want to get USDA licensing in order to process and distribute the meat himself. He is putting together a truck with a walkin freezer and butcher equipment.

“I want to be able to cook this cow and serve my meat

to the President of the United States and be all compliant,” he said.

In order to tour full-time with the grill, Bromberek is looking for corporate sponsorship. He said he built the device with lots of room for advertising.

Once on tour, Bromberek hopes the spectacle of cooking the cow will raise awareness about the importance of

tailgating to the economy.

“People take for granted that people go out and buy things and spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to eat food before a game,” he said.

Planned future stops for the grill include the Bears home opener and the Circuit of the Americas, a Formula One racing event in Austin, Texas.

LEMONT – Nathan Hiatt, who was charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery for allegedly beating a Lemont boy while he slept, is expected to be arraigned Aug. 15, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Hiatt, who is being held on $250,000 bail, will appear at the Bridgeview courthouse, where he will be given his formal charges and asked to enter a plea.

According to a news release

from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, a 10-year-old boy was beaten with a shovel while he slept during the early morning hours of July 6 in unincorporated Cook County near Lemont.

Both the boy and his father, who attempted to shield the boy from the blows, were taken to the hospital and later released, according to the report.

Sheriff’s police were given a description of the offender, which matched that of Hiatt, and located him in the yard, the release said.

LEMONT – Some people go whole hog, but Lemont resident Robert Bromberek prefers to go whole cow.

Bromberek recently created a giant grill capable of cooking an 800 pound cow on a spit.

“Everybody thinks it’s really cool that you’re going to cook a whole cow,” he said.

“My idea was more to put on a show. I want to show people that I can take 800 pounds, I can put it on here, and cook it without burning it.”

The grill made its public debut Saturday at the Taste of Lena in northwestern Lena. Bromberek ultimately

wants to go on tour, taking the grill to festivals, sporting events and even disaster areas.

He is in the process of forming Tailgating for Hunger, an organization that he hopes will donate the beef to charitable organizations.

Bromberek has experience with tailgating. He and partner Tim Shanley often tailgate at Chicago Bears games with “Da Bus” and have appeared on the television competition “Tailgate Warriors.”

He has seen other tailgaters try to cook and serve a whole cow and did his homework before making the grill.

The width and the depth of the stroller takes up much more space. And children are not the people who buy things at those fairs. It’s just making things more congested.

A better way to grieve I hope somebody can help those young people who are perpetuating the memory of their friend with those plastic cups over 294 stuffed inside the fencing. If everybody did that, it would be a terrible mess over the tollway there. In the Suburban Life, there was an article about the Salt Creek butterfly farm, and they have a bereavement program. If I had the money, I would gather up the people who are doing that and have a little bereavement ceremony with the butterflies.

They also need to take down those tattered and discolored and dirty ribbons that are still up and down Wolf Road. I understand the loss of somebody. I’ve lost many people and family pets. I’m sorry for their loss.

The blessing and curse of a career in journalism is that many of us end up moving around a lot. I’ve spent most of my career in the Chicago area, but I also enjoyed stints in the Northeast, Northwest and Southeast.

I was fortunate to meet many interesting people, heard some fascinating stories (fascinating to me, anyway) and learned a lot about the world. But I also had to deal with a sense of rootlessness, of covering a community but not being a part of it.

That changed when I moved to Chicago’s western suburbs. It didn’t take me long to realize that there’s something special about this area.

In other places, I was just passing through. This is home.

Sounding off on immigration To the Editor: Is the American electorate as ignorant as all of our elected leaders believe? The answer is yes!

What does securing our borders and sovereignty; reforming our immigration laws and determining what to do with the persons that have broken our laws to be in this country (illegal aliens) have to do with one another? Nothing!

However, if we believe the BS, which most Americans do, spewing from our leaders they are all one in the same.

First; securing our borders is a matter of national security and is the most basic responsibility of our federal government. It has nothing to do with legal immigration laws and everything to do with stopping foreign nationals from entering our country illegally.

Second; what is wrong with our current immigration laws?

Our government will not enforce them. Period! If our government was as zealous about making sure we tracked

illegal aliens as it was about redistributing wealth, we would not have a single illegal in this country.

Third; why do we want to reward foreign nationals that broke our laws to be here with a “Path to Citizenship”?

We are told it is because so many have been here so long it would be inhumane to anything less.

It is time to wake up, America.

We have seen this movie before and it does not end well for those of us pulling the wagon. Reagan was fooled

by Mazzoli-Simpson in 1986 resulting in complete amnesty for millions of new democrat voters.

The goal to day is no different than in 1986; instantly create 15 million new Democrat voters. In both cases, it was the productive American worker that got screwed.

You see, the cost for these new Democrats is directly passed on in the form of food stamps, welfare, Medicare and too many more taxpayer (53 percent) funded goodies.

REGINA MADEJA Regina Madeja, age 89, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013, at her home.

Regina was born January 8, 1924 in Lemont, the youngest child of Lawrence and Agnes Bromberek, owners of the Blue Hill Bakery. She lived in Lemont for over 80 years.

It was there that she married Thomas Madeja on February 19, 1949, at St. Cyril and Methodius, and remained a member until her move to Shorewood. Regina was a stay at home mom and lovingly raised 4 children. She continued the family tradition as a baker for all who came to visit. You never left the Madeja house without a loaf of bread or a plate of cookies in your hand. When the children started school, she took a job at Totura's as a check-out clerk. Later in life, she enjoyed her nine grandchildren, one born each year from 1982 until 1990. She loved playing games with her young grandchildren, especially Old Maid (and letting them win).

As they grew older, she loved hearing about their musical, scholarly, athletic and culinary (especially baking accomplishments. She was so proud of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren.

Regina is survived by her 4 children, Audrey (Max) Helix of Newbury Park, California, James (Tammy) Madeja of Potsdam, New York, Diane (Greg, deceased) Willis of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Nancy (Bob) Shively of Shorewood, Illinois.

She loved her grandchildren: Max Helix, Mike Helix, Tom (Liz) Madeja, Steve Madeja, Mary (Mike) Landry, Jennifer (Jake) Niehus, Beth Willis, Amanda Shively, and Pat Shively.

She is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her very much.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Thomas Madeja, sonin-law, Greg Willis, six brothers and their wives, and all her brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law.

Visitation for Regina will be Friday, August 2, 2013, from 3:00pm8:00pm, and Saturday, August 3, 2013, from 8:30am-9:30am at Markiewicz Funeral Home, 108 Illinois Street, Lemont. State bill allowing DuPage County stormwater fee awaits signature

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com Gov. Pat Quinn plans to sign a bill that allows DuPage County to create its own stormwater utility fee.

The bill passed both state legislative houses May 16 and was sent to the governor June 14, according to spokesman Dave Blanchette.

He said Quinn supports the bill and plans to sign it before the Aug. 16 deadline.

DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the county stormwater fee would be more equitable than the current method of using property taxes to fund stormwater infrastructure, because a fee would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by a property.

“If you’re a big developer and you put down a large, 50,000-square-feet parking lot of concrete, and you displace

a lot of water to your neighbor downstream, you’ll pay more,” Cronin said when the House passed the bill. “If you take steps to install semipermeable pavers and rain barrels at home, your fee will be a lot less; you’ll get credit for it. It’s the ultimate in responsible behavior policy.”

The bill requires a twoyear planning period including feasibility studies, public hearings and public outreach and education before the implementation of any fee. During the process, the county board also would have to vote whether to create the fee.

If approved, the fee would present a new cost for property-owning nonprofits in DuPage County. Nonprofits are exempt from property taxes but not fees, DuPage County Board Stormwater Committee Chairman James Zay said.

It’s a situation that has frustrated churches and nonprofit organizations in Downers Grove, where village officials approved a municipal stormwater fee earlier this year.

Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fee has cut into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community, and have organized petitions and made public comments at village council meetings this spring and summer. That focus soon might shift to the county.

Zay said churches and other nonprofits would not be exempt from any possible stormwater utility from the county, but that officials would discuss opportunities for credits for using permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off.

Wine and dine with small plates at Salt Creek Wine Bar In a fast-food land of heaping piles of french fries, 32-ounce soda buckets and extra-large pizza slices, it’s nice to find a place where you can eat small and eat slow. At the Salt Creek Wine Bar, you can do just that.

On a recent Friday night, I traveled to Brookfield in anticipation of a nice meal at the wine bar, and got just what I was hoping for: several small plates to be enjoyed over a good glass of wine – in my case, sangria.

Located just off the Brookfield train station near the corner of Grand Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, the Salt Creek Wine Bar has been a staple of the town’s restaurant community for many years.

The atmosphere inside is relaxed and comfortable, filled with plenty of tables, a long bar and a performance area. Work by local visual artists is displayed on the walls, and music plays quietly in the background.

My dining companion and I arrived about 6 p.m. and momentarily were surprised to be the only ones in the restaurant. However, other diners slowly trickled in, and the place was filling quickly by the time we left about 8:30 p.m.

I suspect the reason for the later rush was a young woman with a guitar who was setting up in a corner as we departed. I wish I had stayed on for the music, because it’s a standard feature of the wine bar, with local acts playing everything from folk to jazz.

The live music is a big draw, I’ve been told, and it pairs perfectly with the ambiance, food and drink.

Because it’s a wine bar, wine definitely is the focus here. If you’re not a wine fan, there’s still a good beer and cocktail list, but with so many options and a knowledgeable staff, anyone should be able to find a wine they like – or several to try in a flight.

Bar should be a destination where you go to sit a while, enjoy a good meal and conversation, and not worry about bringing home a doggie bag. You’re there to take it in, eat leisurely and enjoy the overall experience.

I absolutely enjoyed my experience and plan to return soon. With a menu of tapas pizza, creative sandwiches and small plates made for sharing, there’s plenty still to try. When I return, I’ll check the musical offering first and bring as many friends as I can get to accompany me.

Good food is good, but good food accompanied by good friends, good music and good conversation is something more – it’s a feast.

Forzley in line to see more time for Illinois football this fall

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – After walking onto the University of Illinois football team back in 2010, Nick Forzley is set to enter his fourth season as a member of the Illini program.

The Lemont graduate saw his first collegiate action early last fall before missing most of the season with a fractured ankle. Now in his last go-round, Forzley has an opportunity to see time in the secondary and on special teams.

What have you been up to this summer?

The whole summer I have been down in Champaign, lifting, working out and running with the team. And when I’m not doing that, I’ve been working with the Boys and Girls Club in Champaign.

basically all of my goals were achieved that day when I ran out on the field. It went by very fast. Seeing the crowd and running on the field and taking in that atmosphere, it was awesome.

With a major in sports management, what would you like to do post graduation?

I’m leaning toward law school. And eventually, I’d like to become an agent. That’s the goal right now, that’s the plan right now.

What’s it been like being a part of the Big Ten conference?

It was unbelievable. When I first got there, just to see the talent we had on that team, I came in with my eyes wide open. To make the team was a great feeling and as the years have gone by, I’ve gotten more comfortable. I know the guys on the team really well and some are now my best friends.

It’s awesome, just the opportunity and experience I’ve gotten. Going to two bowl games, going to a place like Arizona State, seeing all of the different stadiums. College football is the best sport, I personally think. Every Saturday, you don’t know what is going to happen. Being a part of the Big Ten is a great accomplishment. I love my team and everyone on it and that’s what makes it special.

I’ve loved it. My best buds are on the team and we are around each other every day.

This year I’ve taken more of a leader-type role on the team and I’m excited to be in that role as a senior.

Jack Allen College: Michigan State High school: Hinsdale Central Class: Sophomore Position: Offensive lineman Splitting time between left guard and center last season, Allen started 12 contests and played in all 13 of the Spartans’ games as a redshirt freshman, anchoring an offensive line that helped produce 149.4 rushing yards a game in 2012. Named to the Big Ten Conference all-freshman team, Allen also was a first-team freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of American as well as the Sporting News.

He is the No. 1 right guard on the Spartans’ depth chart heading into preseason camp.

Doug Diedrick College: Northwestern High school: Montini (Woodridge) Class: Sophomore Position: Superback An all-state linebacker in high school, Diedrick has transitioned to the other side of the ball in college to become a utility offensive player for Northwestern.

After sitting out during a redshirt year in 2011, the Woodridge native saw his first collegiate action last fall and played in two games. He caught one pass for 13 yards against South Dakota

Reilly O’Toole College: Illinois High school: Wheaton Warrenville South Class: Junior Position: Quarterback Sharing the quarterback spot with Nathan Scheelhaase last season, O’Toole played in seven games to Scheelhasse’s 10 but posted better numbers in completion percentage (74.7), touchdowns (six) and efficiency rating (142.7). O’Toole also rushed for a pair of touchdowns and finished second on the team in total offense. Last season, he set the program’s single-game record for completion percentage when he completed 83.9 percent of his passes (26-of-31) against Charleston Southern. As one of the most experienced QBs on the roster, O’Toole once again could see plenty of playing time.

Appearing in 10 games, including a start against Central Florida in Week 2, this defensive

lineman finished the 2012 season with four tackles. The 6-foot-2, 303-pounder is expected to have an increased role this fall.

Austin Teitsma College: Illinois High school: Glenbard South Class: Junior Position: Defensive lineman In his second season playing for the Illini last year after taking a redshirt in 2009, Teitsma played in all 12 games and recorded 15 tackles, including two solo and two tackles for loss. He twice recorded four tackles in a game (against Charleston Southern and Northwestern) and forced a fumble against Northwestern.

He also was an academic All-Big Ten honoree. Heading into the 2013 season, Teitsma is the No.

1 defensive tackle on the depth chart.

Mike Trumpy College: Northwestern High school: Wheaton North Class: Senior Position: Running back After playing 13 games in his first two seasons after a 2009 redshirt year, a fully healthy Trumpy played in all 13 of Northwestern’s games last season and finished third on the team in rushing with 349 yards and three touchdowns. The incoming junior set a school record by batting .584 and tied a school single-season record with 10 home runs.

Indians lacrosse registeration set SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – The Lemont Indians youth lacrosse program now is accepting registrations for the 2014 spring season.

Space for the 2014 teams is limited. The U9 team will have a maximum of 16 players while the U11, U13 and U15 teams will have a max of 24 players.

The cost to play is $300 for players who register before Sept. 1. After that, the fee jumps to $350. A $150 deposit is required, and a uniform fee of $120 is due in January. The season begins in April and runs through June.

All players signing up are required to fill out a player info sheet and medical waiver and obtain US Lacrosse insurance. Those forms are available on the Indians’ website at lemontindiansyouthlacrosse.com.

At about the midsummer mark, vegetable gardens can start to look a little tired. I consider it halftime of my warm-season garden. With so much yet to do, plants have already been through a lot.

You have to admire plants for their perseverance as they battle the elements while pushing on to complete their job. In my garden, the hornworms have found the tomatoes.

The ever-present squash bugs and the requisite leaf blight on cucumber plants crashed the party weeks ago. And yet my plants and I forge ahead, barely breaking stride.

For the uninitiated gardener, common occurrences like this can be discouraging. The fresh, picture-perfect garden of only weeks ago now seems like a distant memory. As the garden shows signs of wear, so does the gardener.

Revisiting some of the basics of garden maintenance through proactive attention now will do wonders to restore the vitality and health of most plants in your garden.

Let’s take a look:

Look for pests While Mother Nature has fantastic ways of dealing with pest challenges, we, too, can help. Look closely, and under leaves as well. Manual controls, such as removal by hand, is very effective. I prefer this option since my actions are targeted specifically to only the offending pests. No

beneficials are therefore harmed in the process.

Visit your garden!

The best deterrent to preventing or minimizing garden problems is to catch them early. By getting out to your garden as often as possible, you can stop problems from becoming bigger. Early intervention is the key. Halftime is not too late.

Remove disease One of the most effective ways of keeping plant diseases from spreading is to remove existing problems before they have a chance to. Cut, pull or remove any and all signs of disease.

Dispose of them and don’t put them in your compost.

Refresh your mulch Even over a short time, mulch can break down and become less effective. Add more, if necessary, to keep a 2- to 3-inch layer over your soil. It does wonders in so many ways, from

suppressing weed growth, to keeping soil-borne diseases off foliage, to holding moisture in the soil.

Give an energy boost Over time, nutrients added to the soil at the start of the season disappear. Now is an important time to feed the soil. A 1-inch layer of compost or an organic slow-release fertilizer, or a liquid form that can provide a quick source of nutrition, should be added now.

Keep pruning Many plants produce unrestrained growth, far more than necessary to sustain an appropriate balance between roots and fruits. Use your judgment to cut back as needed.

Cut your losses While some added attention now will be just what is needed to reinvigorate plants for the second half, some may be beyond hope.

For those, cut your losses

and pull them from the garden. Personally, squash is my summer challenge.

After a couple weeks of heavy yields, my plants turn to mush at the base and it’s time for them to go. Yet, new replacement plants are already in place and growing to fill the void.

The longer you garden, the less deterred you’ll be by these bumps along the way. Taking proactive steps at halftime will provide just the encouragement you and your plants need to finish strong with the celebration of the victory of an abundant harvest.
